High Load Purlin Hangers

Strong-Tie W series purlin hangers by Simpson Co. are especially versatile and offer numerous design modifications with extra hish load values.

A larger segment of the series requires only top nailing into the header to accommodate panelized construction. Some W models feature embossed stirrup and top flanges for greater strength. Special bending technique in the forming is used to maximize material strength.

Roofing Material

AHI Roofing has a lightweight metal-base roofing material, which is being introduced in the West.

Trademarked as Typhoon Tile Decramastic Roofing, it resembles clay tile when installed but reportedly weighs only one-sixth as much.

Each Typhoon Tile module be- gins as a iightweight, preformed 16-/z" x 54-%" interlocking galvanized steel panel with seven individual ti-le impressions. Over the 26 gauge, cold- rolled zinc-coated steel module is a thick coating of bituminous waterbound emulsion. On this is applied a layer of natural color stone chips. After sealing with acrylic PVA binder, it's bonded by oven curing.

Each module interlocks top, bottom and sides with adjacent modules and requires only four nails to fasten to battens or spaced sheathing. Solid roof sheathing and asbestos felt are not required to form a weathertight roof, and installation is fast because there are only 20 Typhoon Tiles to a square the company claims.

New Exterior Wood Finish

The Flood Co., manufacturer of Penetrol paint conditioner, has a high solids protective finish which it says keeps exterior wood "alive". The new finish seals and waterproofs exterior wood, and actually enhances or restores its natural beauty, the company claims.

The product is being marketed as CWF Clear Wood Finish. Unlike most exterior finishes, it penetrates wood to provide a rugged, durable seal against the elements. This prevents swelling, shrinking, warping, splitting or blackening. Because it penetrates, it will not crack, chip or peel like varnish.

It can be used on anv exterior wood, from cedar shakes to redwood decks. It works equally well on old, new, rough sawn, planed or pressure treated wood. Within two weeks after its application, CWF reacts with the wood to produce a uniform honey to brown color which enhances new wood and restores the natural beautv of old wood.

Preparation prior to application depends upon the type of wood being treated. However, once the wood has been prepared by weathering, light sanding, or bleaching if necessary, CWF can easily be applied by brush, rollbr, or any airless, conventional or garden sprayer. If the wood is unusually porous, two soaking coats may be necessary, the second coat being applied as soon as the first coat has been absorbed. When thoroughly dried, CWF leaves a rich matte appearance. For lasting protection, reapplication is necessary only every three years on horizontal surfaces and every five years on vertical surfaces.

Corrugated Pail

U.S. Gypsum has a new 25 kg. (55.1 lbs.) package for its joint compound, a high-strength "bag-in-box" container developed by Container Corporation of America.

The package is essentially a corrugated "patl" designed to replace metal and plastic containers. A plastic bag filled with ready-to-use sealer fits into a corrugated shipper. The shipper is approximately the same size as a metal pail and has a plastic handle to facilitate carrying.

U.S.G. estimates that the new container saves approximately Yzd per pound of packaging material over metal pails. And, since the corrugated box is recyclable, the outer containers can be sold in the wastepaper market.

The containers' square shape allows them to be stacked wall-to-wa11, three pallets high, with three tiers per pallet.

Point-Of-Use Water Systems

In-Sink-Erator has introduced point-of-use waterheating systems, including two UltraSystems (UltraHot and UltraWarm) and the steaming H2O tap hot water dispenser. All proviile heated water from a cold water line.

Water heating at point-of-use involves heating the water where it is used, at the sink, bath, or kitchen.

Each heats water in a small holding tank installed beneath the sink rather than in a large water tank placed several feet from the faucet.

Because the systems do not require long pipe runs, the heated water is available as soon as the faucet is turned on; the user does not waste the water that has sat in the pipes and cooled down. The systems feature a watersaving faucet with a special low flow rate that limits water flow to one gal- lon per minute. (Average flow rates range from 3-6 gals. per minute.)

In-Sink-Erator researchers estimate that, given 100' of pipe between a conventional hot water tank and a lavatory, and given an average water usage, an UltraSystem will save nearly 9,000 gals. of water and 2,000 kw hours of electricity per year.

Both systems use a /z-gal. holding tank that heats water to a temDerature of 190- 200oF. When the incomins water is 60oF and 50 psi, the system will produce 6.25 gals. of warm water per hour. Under the same conditions, the UltraHot will produce 60 cups of 190oF water per hour.

Leigh Products' #133 and #134 registers, in its air control line, are designed to provide maximum free area and uniform air distribution as well as quiet, energy efficient operation, the company claims.
