LASC's 18th management conference

"Pattt'rns for Plogrt'ss or How to Succeed irr Busines.s by really trying," is the theme for this year's lSth Annual Management Conference of the Lumber Association of Southern California. The conference, November l-1-16. will be at Palm Spring's El Mirador Hotel.

He will talk on the continuing efiect of the Japanese log t.rport problem on the manufacturer and how it affects wholesale and retail lumbermen. The afternoon se-ssion n'ill feature a panel of lumbermen, discussing curn'nt problems {acing managelnent in todal''s changing and highly competitive market.

That night the traditional directors'cocktail party will be held in the Starlight Patio of the El Mirador. followed by a candlelight dinner and dancing in the Palm Terrace Room.

Next, an outstanding speaker from one of the nation's largest mass merchandisers in the building materials field. Petro Kulynl'ch, exec. vp. of Lowe's Companies. Inc., headquartered in North Wilksboro. North Carolina, will tell ahout Lowe's successful merchandising and sales technique u'hich have led them from a small nperation to ont: har-ing 50 plu-. units throughout the southeast.

Present plans call for the speaker to be a rt'ell knor.r'n top economist in southern California.

Saturday afternoon the trophies will be awarded to the tennis players and golfers, at an informal cocktail party in the executive vice president's bungalow.

This will conclude the lSth Annual Management Con{erence, which promiscs to be one of thc most informative and exciting conferences held in recenr vears.

Simonson lumber Acquisition

Simonson Lumber Co. has purchased the milling and drying facilities of the former Diebold Lumber Co. at Smith River. Calif.. and will move their sales offices there as o{ Nov. 4, according to Denny Hess, Simonson sales manager. The assistant sales manager is Phil Kelty.

No price was gir.en for the sale.

The move means that Simonson will no\ process their redwood at Smith River. rather than Arcata as before. The acquisition expands their redwood line to include bevel sidings, thin paneling, mouldings. pickets and fencing materials.

The new Diebold acquisition is adjacent to other Simonson property in Smith River.

In its last two meetings, Los Angeles' energetic Hoo-Hoo club has entertained the Snark of the Universe. elected new officers" played hundreds of holes of golf and then watched films taken of themselves while they played. A standing ovation was given visiting Snark Robert L. "Bob" Johnson, Thomas Lumber Co., Klamath Falls, Ore., aftir he spoke to the club.

Summit Lumber's Art Johnson held the winning raffie ticket and picked up a new TV set from immediate past president Hugo Miller. Rounds Lumber Co.

At the September meeting, Jack Millikan, Lane Lumber Co.. manned the oameras as the members did their Arne Palmer bits. Golf winners (ofi-camera) were Ken Kenoffel and Jim Barnes tied for low gross; low net, Stan Mago; lst flight, Don Gow and Bud Nelson tied; 2nd flight winners, Hugo Miller and Ed Difani; in 3rd flight, Don Bailey and Jerry Maguire.

7 NAWTA Meetings in the West

The National-American Wholesale Lumher Association h:rs announced that their annual series of regional meetings begins this year in Vancouver, B.C., October 18. Regional meetings provide NationalAmerican membership the opportunity to discuss their industry at the local level and to exchange national and local informaticr.

The six Western regionals following the Vancouver meeting are: Seattle, October 23; Portland, October 24; Eugene, Oregon, October 25; Medfordo Oregon, Oetober 28; San Francisco, October 29; and Los Angeles on October 30th.

Simpson Timber Co. has announced a-ii $4.1 million modernization of its Korbe!'i sawmill and the purchase of ttre Van De'. Nor Lumber Co. sawmill at Arcatao Calif.,:',, as an interim production facility, according to president C. H. Bacon, Jr. .'1,'

The Van De Nor mill was closed more 'I than a month ago by the owners, William i-l and Richard Norris. Simpson is acquiring 'i only the sawmill and associated equipment' ! according to Baeon. :
