The fall campaign promises the interesting and unusual situation of a Democratic platform opposing new taxes and advocating curtailed spending versus Republican commitment to a sales-tax program and recognition of increasing demands {or taxsupported public services.
Montana's next legislative make-up may well reflect the activities and efiectiveness of the MBMDA legislative action committee, arising from growing awareness of the need for involvement in matters of state and national importance.

log Export Controls
The U.S. Congress has taken final action on the t'motionally charged issue of l,og ""po.tr.
Both the house and the senate have given final approval to the 1968 Foreign Aid Act which contains a provision limiting the export of unprocessed logs from public lands west of the l00th meridian. The amendment, sponsored by Sen. S-ayne Nlorse (D.-Ore.), restricts the exports of {ederal timber to lJ50 million bf. a year for three years, beginning with 1969.
The amendment would also permit thc secrt.taries of thc public land managing agencies to make additional logs available for export after public hearings and a department finding that they are surplus to the needs of domestir: users and processors. They would also be authorized to prevent the substitution of nonfederal timber for export-exc,luded timber.
Enactment of the log export provision focuses attention on Initiative 32 on tht. State of Washineton ballot. which would restrict exporl o[ logs from state ownei lands. Washinglon State timlier is now' tht' largest block of public timber not covered by drlmr.stic marrrr[ar'turing reqrrirements.
Sen. John Sparkman (D-Ala..1 stated that, "It must lrc emprhasized that the log export amendment is not intended to lre a restriction on trade, but only to divert rising foreign purchascs from logs to linished lurnlier products. If we can keep our lo6ls at home, our mills can produce enough lumber both {or our booming domestic market and for the export trade."
