New plywood floor system
Sturd-I-Floor, the refined plywood grade designed specifically for singlelayer residential floor applications, is beginning to appear in the marketplace, coinciding with a nationwide American Plywood Assn. promotional campaign.
"We feel Sturd-I-Floor could be the key that unlocks the full potential of single-layer plywood floors," comments APA executive v.p. Bronson J. Lewis. "Sturd-l-Floor will make it easier for the industry's customers to specify plywood and easier for APA members to produce, through greater manufacturing flexibility and better resource utilization."
The proprietary single-floor grade was developed by APA to capitalize on the growing popularity of singlefloor applications. Over a third of the plywood consumed by the residential construction industry is used for floor applications and singleJayer floors is the system most widely used by home builders.
Sturd-I-Floor is the newest member of the APA family of span-rated engineered plywood. The panels carry a Span Index showing the maximum recommended spacing of floor joists, based on the panel's structural performance.
It is manufactured with Span Indexes of 16,20,24,and 48 inches and in thicknesses ranging from 19132inch to l-l/8-inches. Panels are produced with either square edges or tongue-and-groove joints and as full exterior panels or as interior type with exterior glue.
In addition to conventional veneer layups, Sturd-I-Floor also encompasses composite panels. And, since the Span
Index is based on panel performance, identification of the wood species group is not necessary.
Sturd-I-Floor meets requirements of all model building codes as performance is based on plywood's proven capabilities demonstrated by comprehensive tests and years of experience in residential applications.
Lumber Production
(Continued from poge 3I ) the largest independent lumber producer in the United States todaY. Had it appeared in this survey, it would have been in thirteenth Place with production of 414 rnillion feet.
In recent months, however, the firnr has installed five new carriages and several new setworks at its sawmills in Northern California. It appears as if their production,in our estimation, could increase to 440 million feet for 1978. As a result, it might catapult Sierra Pacific Industries into contention for tenth place in next year's survey. It is difficult to forecast this with any degree of accuracy because ofdecisions being made by other producers, but it is something to watch closely.
