MERCHANDISING KITCHEN CABINETS
(Continued from page 39) alism. Use different backgrounds for each and decorate them so that each appears to be in a separate setting. Where possible let accent pieces match the period; pewter pots with colonial is one example.
Seek the feminine viewpoint. Some dealers ask their wives to give the displays a real woman's touch. Plants are useful for decorating kitchen cabinet displays. They can be hung or placed on counters to add a breath of life that most women appreciate.
Pay particular attention to the placement of cabinet setups in regard to corners and lighting. Nothing is less attractive than cabinets with dark finishes that are placed in blind corners without ample lighting. If you must display cabinets in such areas, be sure to upgrade the lighting and use bright accents to draw attention to the cabinets.
Establish cleaning and maintenance schedules for kitchen center displays and adhere to them. Charge someone with this responsibility. Avoid cluttering up display areas with catalogs, samples, hand-outs, order forms, etc. These can be conveniently stored in the cabinets instead. Cleanliness and neatness can create an image of pride, concern and attention to detail.
Check the kitchen center periodically to see that no hardware is missing from the cabinets and that functional pieces are operating in good order. Cabinets with missing handles or pulls won't help you close sales. And neither will door catches that don't hold, drawers that don't glide, orlazy susans that don't turn.
Make use of the National Kitchen Cabinet Assn. point-of-purchase stickers in the showroom. They are selfadhesive for easy placement on the front of certified cabinet doors. These "silent salesmen" will help promote the benefits of certified cabinets to your customers.
You might also want to keep copies of the NKCA consumer booklet on hand for interested customers. Most homemakers appreciate printed information to aid them in the selection ofkitchen cabinets and vanities.
