DO YOU REMEMBER?

Mr. Hay's self pity (see The Merchant, July, p.50) over "the real tough job of selling redwood" brought crocodile tears to my eyes, and also started my mind to wander over 40 years-plus of this great business.

I'll put it this way, I remember when Jack Dionne ran "The Merchant", do you? When Lloyd Cole had a young salesman named Fritz Hawn at Hammond Redwood. When George Clough ran the show for Bert McKee at San Pedro and Jim Chase was his right hand man. Al Privett was in charge at E.K. Wood, and "Rex" Clarke was the leader at Consolidated Lumber, and 8,000 to 10.000 feet was a truck and trailer load for Patten Blinn. W. B. Wickersham had a salesman named Bill Shorse at Pope & Talbot and "Charlie" Henry ran the Twin Harbors' office. Wendell Brown sold for McDonald & Harrington, too.

Remember that yard center of Beverly Hills? number OXford 6l9l Sun Lumber Co.

in the very Its phoneand name

Owen Dalton had a yard on Western Ave. around the corner from Wayne Mullinsr yard. Not long ago Lowell Kolb & Chuck Nelson stopped by the house and we talked over these and many other old times.

"Pappy" McCartys phone number when you needed a truck was San Pedro 36. -'Fitz" sold timbers, etc., for San Pedro Lumber.

Gus Hoover had a young salesman named Bob Leischman and Bob Hoover was a "grader" in Hollywood as well as going to Stanford with brother Dick.

When Ty Cobb was a salesman for Red River Lumber Co. before starting out on his own and Ray Hill was Don Philips' right hand after Ted Lawrence passed on. And Ed Fountain had a partner in the wholesale business named Stu Smith.

How about the time Abe Jackson and Ray Shannon swapped jobs for Union Lumber? "Sandy" MacDonald and Joe Hall ran the show at Owens Parks for the Melins.

Bill HanJn sold for John Rudbach and Jim Hudson. Did you know Harry H. White was a shortstop and played for (I believe) Cleveland for a short time? Harold Frodsham was a building contractor and lived in Manhattan Beach.

How many remember Art Kaiser and Bill Knight, two great guys of the past. "Friday" Freeland long before there was a Far West and who was the man at Huff Lumber? Why George himself, of course. Also Howard Page was sales manager for Coos Bay Lumber Co., and George Reave had a plywood distribution yard in down town L.A. Al Bell and Lou Godard kept things going at HobbsWall and Fred Holmes at HolmesEureka, and Ed Bauer and Carl Porter left Bohnhoff to start Atlas Lumber Co. Max Barnette was getting a start at E. K. Wood on the order desk, and George Geary sold pine for them.

Who will ever forget the man with the trip hammer mind and bushy eye brows. Ralph Baker of Hayward and Barr fame. Or Pop Henderson at Woodhead on Pico Blvd., The Alley

Bros. from Santa Monica or the Stoner family of West L.A.

Remember when Park Arnold had a roofing company behind Bentley Lumber on Los Feliz Blvd. and "Slim" Hightower was "Super" at Fox Woodsum. And Kerckoff Cuzner built their new yard on Highland near Sunset Blvd.

I also remember when Roy Pitcher and Curt McFadden started Associated Lumber with $10,000 borrowed money, for I was there.

Sincerely,

Bob Sutton Fallbrook Lumber Co. 801 S. Main Fallbrook, Ca.92028
