What we really are is an indecipherable and unsolvable equation because we are constantly changing ... without finishing. How to act in the deeper processes of transformation and change? While we are young, our potential exploits groping in different directions. My uncle, who was then 70, told me the old saying "Hey, I'm already playing!" The years pass by teaching you first what you will no longer be, because you have been discarding it, or because it has been discarding you. So we begin to understand that we are no longer truly youths. Life is a decision process; every time you say yes to something, you are saying no to everything else; each time you open a door, you walk into a room that leads to another. Freedom, I've written many times, is a narrow one-way corridor, where the most that we can do, motu proprio, is to come close to either side of the aisle. We live immersed in the illusion of freedom, on the assumption of being in command of our lives, when in fact we are inserted in thousands of realities larger than ourselves, continuously influenced in an open or underhand manner by thousands of forces, energy and tension, with much more authority than we would like to accept, either by ignorance, either by haughtiness. If you have the chance of beginning to find out how things work, the first intention, after the initial shock, is that of running away. It reminds me of Matrix, with the two pills, red and blue; the problem is that when you choose to take them there is no way back. Leaving behind ignorance fills you with frustration, because what once shone, now you see it dark, and until something begins to shine again on your new gaze, you feel lost, because you don't know who you are; the one who was is no longer there; the one to come, is still coming, but he hasn't landed yet.

Jiu Jitsu JUKOSHIN RYU JIU JITSU An efficient self-defense system A bit of historyâ&#x20AC;Ś It's been a few years since Soke Bryan Cheek, 10th Dan, publicly announced his new style of Jiu Jitsu. It was in October 2003, in Ottawa, Canada. We had gathered to celebrate our annual WEBBS Martial Arts Congress (World Elite Black Belt Society), and as part of our activities, Soke gathered all of his Senior grades to communicate his decision to formalize something that, on the other hand, was evident to all of us: that his way of seeing and understanding the techniques of hand to hand combat r eflected a ve r y particular way of interpreting all the martial knowledge he had accumulated in his already long and successful career as a martial artist. And that very particular vision of the handto-hand combat art, he called JUKOSHIN RYU JIU JITSU.

Self Defense ut although, as I say, the new style became official on that date, it had already been numerous decades since Soke Bryan Cheek's Jiu Jitsu had ceased to be the former Juko Ryu which it came from. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had the honor and privilege of training with Soke for 30 years now. Back then, when I first met him, it became obvious to me that this martial artist had a special capacity to move and solve any combat situation with great skill. And he certainly did it in a very different way than other contemporary masters who shared with him martial style and roots. In the United Kingdom there have been many and very good Jiu Jitsu Masters over the last 80 years, so it is not easy to

Jiu Jitsu stand out and make a clear difference with others. In these 30 years of closely sharing my martial path with Soke, I had the opportunity to see firsthand the way in which he was polishing and perfecting himself and how the set of techniques that made up his curriculum evolved into a complete and tremendously effective system. After hundreds of hours training and learning from someone with the talent of Soke, sharing both inside and outside the tatami his passion, devotion and complete dedication to Jiu jitsu, my own martial knowledge got impregnated little by little,

detail by detail, with the essence of his knowledge. In the last 20 years I have traveled all over the world, dedicated to the diffusion and transmission of our Jukoshin Ryu, training international instructors and making known to professionals and neophytes the essence of this sophisticated and efficient self-defense and close combat system. What you are going to see in this new work is a small sample of our style, which I hope you enjoy, and in which, together with my students Shihan Micha Vogt and Shihan Javier Cámara, I will try to make a small tour through our wide and varied program of techniques.

Jiu Jitsu Jiu Jitsu as a self-defense and not as a sport Something I've often been able to observe is that the difference among sport, self-defense and show is not always too clear. Without a doubt, all the options are valid, even those that mix in different proportions any of these three facets, but we must be very honest and scrupulous when determining what kind of martial training we are doing or, in case we are instructors, we are teaching. It's evident that these three facets of martial training present very different strategies. The main goal of a sporting style will be first and foremost to defeat our opponent in a controlled environment, within a series of rules and limitations that must be scrupulously followed. If our training is focused on developing the external aspect of the technique, our system will be very visual and it will undoubtedly cause a high impact on any observer. If our style is focused on self-defense, it will be success and survival in real combat that will make the difference. I have no doubt that whatever the chosen option, success in mastering techniques will only come after

years of strong will and constant effort, because, to be successful in sports events, as well as to perform complicated acrobatics, it first must be reached an optimal physical and mental development. Not to mention surviving and / or successfully solving a real close combat situation. But technique and training, as well as the strategy that works on the street, are very likely not to be so effective in a sporting match, and may the possible cause of immediate disqualification, in addition to not even being particularly flashy. Similarly, the strategy and the type of technique that works at a sporting level will hardly be that effective on the street, especially considering that our real adversary will not be an athlete of noble spirit who will try to avoid reaching the most aggressive and even dangerous aspects of combat. And in the same way, the most spectacular styles that emphasize the visual aspect of the technique don't either usually work in the field of sports or in the street. Importance of strategy in modern combat The different forms of hand-to-hand combat have evolved naturally throughout the ages, and it's obvious that the way of fighting in ancient Japan was not the same as that of Europe in the late XIX century or early XX century (when the first Japanese Masters arrived in here and began to spread their martial knowledge) or the way we fight today. Although there is no doubt that we have much to learn from traditional styles, it's very important understanding that if we really seek effectiveness, the way of fighting must be adapted to real situations and not to purely theoretical options. That's why our style places great emphasis on certain aspects such as a correct position, proper guard, shifting, timing, as well as an efficient control on the environment of our combat place.

Real combat is very fluid and full of surprises, so our attitude and predisposition is as important as mastering the technique itself, which finally must be adapted to the ever changing requirements of a real situation. But just as we're not all the same, what works for me might not be the same thing that works for you. It's for that reason that, having a development program of hundreds of techniques, we help our students, through the study and knowledge of the whole system, to find those movements that best suit their particular way of facing a real combat situation, and that way, assure them a solid base on which to sustain their defense strategy.

Years later, Hanshi Eduardo arrives as the representative and heir of a lineage, continuing with the pedagogical and informative work of his Master. I only have good words to celebrate this fact. he knife is one of the most intriguing bladed weapons for the expert in Martial Arts. The shiny blade evokes all the power that the knife contains. Solid and sharpened iron that transforms the one who wields it into a being as strong as ten men and as lethal as a feline. No sensible being calmly confronts a blade, whether a kitchen knife or a combat dagger or the latest generation “folder”. It isn’t the same to fight, to defend oneself, in an empty-hands combat and to confront the “bites” of a blade. A bladed weapon in the hands of an expert is a spontaneous ray, a serpent’s tongue, and when it touches, marks, and cuts deep, it leaves evident and indelible tracks in its wake. There is nothing romantic in a knife wound. And for that, even today in the era of supertechnological weapons, the study of the knife awakens great interest. The theme—beyond the martial—involves as much civilians as those who work in law enforcement. The first because they see in a short blade one of the tools of delinquents, the others because they often have to confront that cold reality. How did the old Martial Arts schools deal with this theme? In Italy, the Fencing schools highly valued the study of short-bladed weapons. The weapons masters knew that combat with the dagger was one of the possibilities for which everyone had to be prepared. And that not only for men of weapons, but also for the civilians: a dagger was a weapon that everyone could carry, and everyone walked in the streets armed. The occasion in which to draw it were not only the duels of honor. For a 40 cm sharpened and cutting blade to appear in a hand, a quarrel in a tavern was enough, skirmishes and little battles between soldiers, aggressions and various other encounters. To survive in a high-risk environment like that, to know the art of “fare alle cortellante” (to stab) and of “abracar” (empty-hand fighting) was almost an obligation. A fight, a “dagger against dagger” confrontation, held different unknowns. One could get to a hand-to-hand fight and have to utilize the fighting arsenal to reinforce the work of the blade. If one didn’t get the knife out right away, one had to confront the armed attack with only empty hands. Another possibility—in the past less probable, but today more so—was that of being unarmed in the street. For that, the old school developed a series of techniques of offense and defense, vital strategies and conservative tactics related to the art of fighting with the dagger. Here are some of the fundamental recommendations taught to the novices “of the first school” who initiated their learning with the short bladed weapons:

• To remain in “call” guard and to provoke the adversary to attack; • To look at the enemy, focusing on the movements of his armed hand; • To move oneself cautiously keeping the right disposition and position; • When possible, to do a quick stabbing attack against his armed hand; • Exit a quick attack with backward steps and cutting half-strikes; • In case of an enemy attack, do double shields with dagger and free hand; • “Andare alle strette” (to go to hand-to-hand) only if forced by the action, the place, or grips. By the way, these pieces of advice were not enough to call oneself “scarmitori” (fencer). It was only the beginning steps on a road of knowledge and consciousness, with martial work done with sweat, dedication, courage, intelligence, brotherhood, and heart. Outside there were no safe places and the preparation had to respect the tough law of reality. The dagger tried to do all of that.

A VALUABLE LESSON By Grandmaster John Pellegrini

There are many different ways to learn important lessons in life, and the same applies to the Martial Arts where the physical ones we learn on the mat, with blood, sweat and tears (hopefully, mostly sweat). But there are other lessons just as important, (and often even more important than the physical ones), that Martial Artists learn through other means such as listening to our elders, to those of higher rank and, of course, to our teachers. We can also learn by attending seminars, by reading books, by asking questions or, as in the case of this story, by making an inappropriate comment.

n the late 1980s, I begun studying Aikido. Given that I was already teaching two Martial Arts (Taekwondo and Hapkido) fulltime at my two schools in South Florida, you may wonder why I would undertake the demanding study of another art, and the answer lies in the history of the Founder of Hapkido, Grandmaster Choi Yong Sool. His Martial Arts roots were not in Korea but in Japan, and his teacher had been Sokaku Takeda, the Headmaster of an old and respected AikiJuJitsu style called Daito Ryu. Interestingly, Takeda had another student who, like Choi, went on to become the originator of another art; that student was Morihei Ueshiba, the venerable Founder of Aikido. And that was the reason I decided to study Aikido: I wanted to discover the connection between the two arts by understanding their differences and their similarities. Coincidentally, this was also the time when the Steven Seagal’s movie “Above the Law” (1988) became a Martial Arts classic and, with its exciting fighting scenes, introduced Aikido to the general population. That popularity, however, created some confusion, with many students thinking that Aikido and Hapkido were the same art with two different spellings. (However, that confusion was not totally unwelcome, as it actually had a positive impact on students’ enrollments at my schools!). After some research, I found a respected Aikido teacher who, after reviewing my Martial Arts credentials, accepted me as a student. He also understood the fact that, due to my professional teaching career and the distance involved, I could travel to train with him in person only periodically, at pre-arranged times. He was very kind and supportive, and I owe him a great

debt of gratitude for agreeing to work around my situation. A few years later, one evening in Chicago, at the end of my Aikido journey, I had the pleasure of sharing a pizza and a few beers with my Aikido sensei, the late Fumio Toyoda. Having completed my requirements for Assistant Instructor certification, my sensei asked me if I had found the answers that I had been looking for concer ning the differences and similarities between Aikido and Hapkido. The question, and my answer, stimulated an interesting conversation about the history, philosophy and technical attributes of both arts. And then came the lesson. Feeling very relaxed (most likely as a result of the few beers), I made what I came to regard later as a very inappropriate comment; I casually said that I thought that Aikido was a beautiful art, but that it was not the most effective

for modern self-defense. Pausing after a bite of pizza, my sensei very calmly said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;You want selfdefense? Buy a gun!â&#x20AC;? I first thought that his remark was amusing and told in jest, but then I realized that my sensei had just presented me with a valuable lesson, and not just in proper etiquette, but also in Martial Arts philosophy. I quickly apologized for my careless comment, but he told me that he knew that I had meant no disrespect to him or to the art of Aikido. He understood that what I had tried to articulate with my clumsy and tactless comment was, that according to my judgement, I had identified one of the most fundamental technical differences between Aikido and Hapkido: the first being a traditional art with a substantial spiritual component, and the latter being a system

Grand Masters developed to address different needs, in a very specific cultural and social environment, at a very particular, historical time. But there was another, more profound, layer of wisdom in his simple answer. What he wanted to convey to me was that the vast majority of people who study Aikido were not searching for the ultimate self-defense system; instead, they were studying the art for its beauty, its challenging difficulty, its rigid discipline and protocol, its respect for honored traditions, and its moral philosophy. If the only thing Aikido students wanted to do was to learn self-defense, they would be better off buying a gun. Once properly understood and reflected upon, one can easily see that my senseiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s powerful (albeit sarcastic) insight applies, to some degree, to all traditional Martial Arts. Self-Defense is intrinsically connected to the study of all Martial Arts, but for many students and teachers, it is not their ultimate goal or the focus of their training. With my biased and narrow-minded remark, I had demonstrated my lack of a broader perspective. And, so it was that I learned a valuable lesson, while eating pizza and drinking beer with a wise, funny and generous teacher. My Aikido experience was useful, enriching and eyeopening. And although that, with Combat Hapkido and my life-long focus on practical self-defense, I followed a very different path for my Martial Arts journey, I will always carry the deepest respect for Aikido, thanks to my sensei and the valuable lessons he taught me.

Traditional Forms practice Siamese barehanded self defense Art, Muay Thai, is known nowadays mainly as a form of boxing, where the athletes use their hands, legs, elbows and knees to hit, aiming to knock the opponent out. Over the past 10 years, thanks to the work of the IMBA staff worldwide, the general public has begun to know more about the traditional style of Muay, now spread in many countries throughout the world under the name of Muay Boran. In modern Thai Boxing, the various training methods still follow in most cases the systems used in Western Boxing gyms. However, in order to practice the traditional system of Muay in the best possible way, the Nak Muay should add to sports workout systems a more martial and classical way of training based on the practice of Traditional Technical Forms, known in Thailand as Chok Lom. The formal exercises we are talking about consist of series of movements of attack and defense created

by ancient Khru Muay and refined over the centuries to develop basic skills such as rhythm, coordination, balance, speed and the grounding needed to raise the technical level of trainees. In recent years there has been a rediscovery of these forms of training, mainly through the work of thai Grand Master Sane Tubtibtong who, having arranged the well known sequences performed by the main characters in movies such as Ong Bak and Beautiful Boxer, has brought back to fame the practice of traditional Forms. The applications of these forms have been in use for long in shows both in Thailand and in the West, especially the Mae Mai (basic forms) and Look Mai (advanced forms), performed by two athletes simulating a real fight. However, thanks to Master Sane, in the past 4 years there has been a growing interest in â&#x20AC;&#x153;soloâ&#x20AC;? forms performance, a much more introspective way to train Muay: this system raised a great interest all over the world. The summit of this rediscovery took place in March 2007, at the first Muay Boran Forms World Championships held in Bangkok, where many nations took

part, along with Thailand, rising enthusiastic comments by all media in that country and abroad. Nowadays, there are more than 30 codified sequences or Forms included in IMBAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s curriculum: some of them are very old, others are modern interpretations of forms which came to us in fragments; some are really short, others are long, in some of them the athlete focuses on the use of a single natural weapon (for example the elbow), in others it combines the use of all weapons (including locks and throws). Each form has its own features and the continuous practice of all series, depending on the technical level of practitioners, provides a fundamental training useful to support the practice of more difficult actions. By practicing "solo" forms athletes of any level can train and condition their whole bodies: they can combine horizontal, vertical, diagonal blows performed with every body part with quick steps in all directions (including turns, jumps and rolls); the repetition of technical series at high speed allows also expert athletes to train explosiveness and stamina; besides, for un-experienced students or athletes recovering after a period of inactivity, this practice can be a good low impact exercise, too. In addition, combining "solo" forms with impact training (using striking pads or developing the power of each action with a heavy bag) all the techniques and strategies learned will become alive, definitely becoming a part of the technical expertise of the Muay Boran practitioner. In Forms training it is essential to follow some basic principles, which are in fact common to all sequences practiced in oriental Martial Arts: â&#x20AC;˘ Perform the series in the order prescribed: Thai masters always advise new Wester n instructors to teach Mae Mai in the correct order without starting to teach Look Mai before the student has completely mastered Mae Mai techniques. In fact, each movement of a sequence makes more sense if it is properly combined with the previous and the next technique.

• Concentrate yourself on making each step the right way: footwork is the single most important technical element according to the majority of Muay Thai masters. Working out on forms properly improves footwork drastically, with obvious benefits for the fighter. • Understand the meaning of each gesture: the beauty of Muay Boran Forms also consists in the fact that each action can be excerpted and directly integrated in real combat situations. Of course this can be done only if the boxer fully understands every detail of the action he intends to employ. • Train the sequence following the right rhythm, performing the movements in "harmoniously”: that is the most particular point but it is perhaps the most important in the motherland of the Art. Historically, the skills allowing the fighter to perform a beautiful and aesthetic movement and a deadly effective one at the same time are considered of great importance by Thai people: those attributes are fluidity of motion, correct alter nation of muscle contraction and relaxation, body flexibility. A fighter who wins his combats rudely, only by his brute force or endurance, is admired by the public but will never become an idol in Thailand; by contrast, the public only considers an idol the elegant, technical athlete, who wins but doesn’t humiliate the opponents and who uses the right movement just at the right time, avoiding a clash of force against force, performing a sort of "deadly dance" in front of the adversary. These features, the most loved by all Muay Thai experts in the motherland, are developed in an excellent way through the correct practice of technical forms, especially the most advanced ones.

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attackerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

Shaolin Chan Buddhism (Zen) Show a flower and smile, the origin of Chan (Zen) The word "chan" is the transcription from the Sanskrit term "dhyana", that means "thinking in stillness" or "repairing thoughts". There are several stories about the origin of Chan Buddhism (Zen). One of them takes us to ancient India and says that one day, the Great King Brahma sent an udumbara flower made of gold to the founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni Buddha and invited him to lecture. Sakyamuni only limited himself to showing the flower to his disciples with no explanation whatsoever. Without understanding what the Buddha meant, his disciples remained silent. Only the Venerable Kasyapa smiled. Then Sakyamuni Buddha announced: "My method of enlightenment is to bring light to every corner, to see everything with a clean and pure heart.

y way is taught through the mind, not through the written word, it is a special transmission separate from the scriptures; I will transmit the chan mind to Kasyapa (Mahakashyapa)." This method of teaching, based on the transmission from mind to mind and from heart to heart, independently of the scriptures, is unique. On account of this, Kasyapa would become the first patriarch of Chan Buddhism (Zen) so the origin of Chan goes back to Buddha Sakyamuni himself.

The unity of Dhyana (Chan) and Kung Fu When we speak of Shaolin Chan Gong Fu we are talking about a unique style of Martial Arts that unifies Chan Buddhism (Zen) with Kung Fu, where the mind, the body and the spirit make up a unique and inseparable unit. As many of you know, Chan Buddhism was

born in China and the Shaolin Temple is considered its place of origin, although in history it really took hundreds of years for he Chan to reach the heart of the Chinese. Buddhism in the Shaolin Temple began to be transmitted from its construction in 495 A.D., when Emperor Xiao Wen decided to build the Monastery for the Venerable Indian monk Batuo, to whom he invited to lead the Shaolin Temple as Abbot. Batuo taught Theravada Buddhism in the Monastery and thus passed it on to his disciples Huiguang and Sengchou. Bodhidharma arrived in China from India between 520 and 527 A.D. and met with Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty. Although the emperor was a fervent supporter of Buddhism, they didn't reach any agreement, so Bodhidharma crossed the Yangtze River and settled on a mountain very close to the Shaolin Temple. There he is said to have meditated (and developed a teaching method or a way to transmit his wisdom) for nine years and taught his new doctrine to several disciples, including Huike. The teachings of Bodhidharma were based on the personal search, away from the worship of statues. He

held that sutras were important in fostering a Buddhist base, but he was against the constant recitation thereof, so he emphasized meditation sitting in front of the wall as a method of self-realization and spiritual search. Back then, Taoism and Confucianism were the predominant philosophies in China. Dhyana (Chan - Zen) emphasizes having a clear mind and attaining enlightenment. In Buddhist philosophy, Dhyana is the right path and the practice of Kung Fu serves simply to cultivate the mind and to achieve personal introspection. Dhyana is based on meditation, rejects people's desire for victory and eliminates worries. The reason why many monks have achieved great achievements in Kung Fu is because the Chan allows them to train in a peace mental state. We Shaolin Kung Fu practitioners consider Chan (Zen) as a method of personal self-cultivation, where stillness and movement are one, and where through the practice of Kung Fu, together with meditation, we

achieve a deep concentration that frees us from the Distractions that we can find in daily life. Now, how do we practice Chan (Zen) and what is its goal? We can explain Chan meditation as a form of stillness or calmness in which, through practice, we manage to expel inner obstacles and outer distractions. So, by calming body and mind, we can focus our thoughts on some objectives or specific purposes, and reflect using Buddhist theories in order to get rid of the concerns, and turn ignorance into wisdom, so that we can be spiritually liberated and so reach the highest level of this practice. The Chan Buddhism sect lays its bases in the teachings of Buddha and uses Chan Gong Fu as a training method for spiritual self-cultivation. This unique method of practice was only carried out in the Shaolin Temple. The monks of old used the Kung Fu training techniques to exercise their body and mind so as to endure the long hours of meditation. We can also consider the development of Chan as a mixture of the Confucius virtue, the Taoist quietness, the Buddhist philosophy emptiness and the Chinese doctrine of the unity of Universe and Self. This union of philosophies or currents of thought are reflected in a stele of stone carved in the Shaolin Temple and that today is one of the symbols of the Temple itself.

This state of peace is what we call the unity of Dhyana and Kung Fu The practice of Shaolin Kung Fu begins with Dhyana, and the ultimate purpose of Kung Fu practice is to fully understand Dhyana. For this reason, we also call "Kung Fu Chan" the Shaolin Kung Fu, which means that it's possible to study and learn Buddhism through the practice of Kung Fu. Shaolin Kung Fu is an inner training that allows the mind to be as strong and as stable as a mountain. The stability of the interior can only be externalized if the practitioner has a total lack of worries. During the development of Chan, the Shaolin Kung Fu also developed gradually reaching its maximum splendor in the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Kyusho is the highest level of expression of any Martial Art. In this second work, we will analyze our basic strategy ... closing the distance, breaking the structure and neutralizing the aggressor as quickly as possible. To do this, we will avail ourselves of everything that can give us an advantage, and among the best tools at our disposal, we want to use the Kyusho! We will always do this following the principles of our school, Kaizen Martial Arts Italy, using our knowledge of the human body reactions, predictable reactions as autonomous responses, caused by the Kyusho attacks in the neurological system or the vascular system, and we will do it by turning around the circle of Kaizen, composed of questions, problems, answers, solutions and verifications to improve continuously.

Summer Training (Training on the Road) By Grandmaster Taejoon Lee

The summer is upon us and many people will be on the road vacationing as well as many of the European martial art clubs will be closing for the summer, leaving the avid martial artist without a means of training. It is important to understand that building up the body in strength and stamina, then sustaining it requires much time and hard work, but losing it is quite easy and fast. In this article, I will try to give some advice on how to best maintain your martial fitness.

hen you think about getting ready for the summer, most often people think of creating a desirable body, fitting nicely into their bathing suits. They join a gym, start dieting, run a few more km to get rid of that excess fat. There are many personal trainers and other coaches who can give advice on how to get the body in shape to look good in a swimsuit. My primary goal here is to offer advice to practicing martial artists to maintain all their health benefits as well as to novices to present a case that through martial arts one can get the body that they desire as a by-product of proper training. Unfortunately, many martial artists feel that they need to do other activities in order to shape their bodies and look good. They also join a gym and take up weightlifting or start jogging, biking, swimming to lose some extra fat. This is true for martial arts, which are focused on fighting only such as MMA, boxing, muay thai, kickboxing, jujitsu, judo. However, for traditional martial arts that have forms (in Korean â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hyung or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Poomsaeâ&#x20AC;?,

in Chinese “Taolu”, and in Japanese “Kata”), it is one of the best ways to stay in top physical shape as well as maintaining your martial skills. The wisdom of traditional martial arts is that the “Way” is not only to fight, but for improving the self by maintaining a healthy mind and body. Therefore, the forms provide a means of improving overall health both physically and mentally. I have heard many practitioners of martial arts say things like, “I just want to learn how to fight and don’t want none of that forms stuff”; “The forms are useless”; “I like fighting, but I hate the forms.” I do agree however, that forms alone are not effective in training someone to fight, which in essence is the nature of martial arts. One style, which is primarily for health benefits, is the Chinese art of Tai-Chi. Although, the Tai-Chi forms are designed with movements applicable to fighting, it is mainly practiced with the forms and not actual sparring or fighting. Therefore, the perfect answer to the question of how can I train to stay fit and improve my martial skills when I am all alone with no one else to practice my techniques and there are no “Dojang” (“Dojo” in Japanese or in Chinese “Kwoon” or “Wu Guan”) open, is FORMS. That is precisely what it was designed for. You can practice your forms a n y w h e re , a n y time, indoors or outdoors, all you need is a decent sized space and you. In physical development, these are the areas which needs to be addressed:

• Strength, Power • Endurance, Stamina • Flexibility • Speed • Agility • Coordination, Fluidity (Can actually be a separate criteria) • Balance • Stylistic Movement (For martial artists) All of the above criteria are self-explanatory, except for “Stylistic Movement”. What is meant by that is that each martial art has a certain look and feel to it. By practicing the forms in many repetitions, one will gain that styled look and feel of their perspective art. All of these criteria of physicality listed above can be achieved through the practice of forms. It all depends on how you perform them. By changing the way you do your forms, you can enhance all areas of your physical self as well as effectively control your weight. In my opinion, there are four ways to train your forms with each method focusing on a few of the criteria and by practicing all four methods; you will gain multiplicative physical results. 1. Slow – In the Slow Method, you must perform your form as slowly as you can with proper breathing and by extending your stances as deeply as possible. The movements must be constant and fluid without any quick, jerky motions. With proper breathing, it will help to increase your energy flow. Also, this is the time to make sure that all movements are correct and as precise as possible. This also has a mental benefit, as it is meditative to focus only on the present, on the movements without any other distractive thoughts. 2. Fast – In the Fast Method, you must move as quickly as possible without worrying about

correcting your movements. What is primary is that you move with the greatest of speed. This will increase your fast twitching muscles, which in turn will increase your speed. 3. Ideal – The Ideal Method is performing the form as it should be performed. A form has a rhythm and each form is different. At times it is slow with deep breathing and in different spots it is fast and explosive with a powerful “Kiap”. This will help to improve all areas. 4. Explosive – The Explosive Method is to do all movements in jumping, whether a kick, hand strike, or moving to a stance. This will highly increase your aerial assault and agility by increasing your fast twitching muscles as well giving you greater balance. These Four Methods should be practiced in the order described and once finished should be repeated until you fill the training duration of 20 to 30 minutes minimum with no rest in between, starting with 20 minutes and increasing to 30 minutes as you improve in your stamina. By doing so, this will become an aerobic exercise, which will help to burn fat. Furthermore, studies show that this method of fast/slow exercising is the best way to preserve longevity of life. You will find that this is not as easy as it sounds and it will be one of the most challenging exercises you have ever undertaken. In Hwa Rang Do® we have one form in each rank starting from Tae Soo Do®. There are nine ranks each, which means there are 18 Hyungs (Forms) when you become a Black Sash. I often tell my Instructors to train by performing all the forms at least once. When you have so many forms, there is no need to break it down in each method. Just to finish them all will be a great feat in itself. We are constantly trying to invent and find new ways, forgetting that there is wisdom in the “old”, in ancient knowledge. That is what wisdom is, old and truth. The Truth is not new, it is old and primal, buried deep, waiting to be discovered by the few who seek it with humility. Hope you have a fantastic summer!

In addition, we practice fighting with all sizes, variations and combinations of swords (made in bamboo) as well as incorporating a wide range of movements and techniques. Kyusho is the highest level of expression of any martial art. To understand Kyusho is to understand the knowledge of the reactions of the human body. In this DVD we will analyze the First Encounter, intended as the first analysis of a possible situation of confrontation, and the first evaluation of the possible progressions. We will analyze how Kyusho can help us and, as we know the reactions of the human body, we can reach the closest and most accessible point by anticipating the reactions of the aggressor. We will analyze Kyusho, according to my vision, developed in more than 20 years of practice of this art, but also derived from my experiences in other martial arts, including Ryukyu Kempo, Yoseikan Budo, Kick Boxing & Karate. Kyusho is the "turbocharger" of any technique, which can increase the effectiveness and efficiency of our action exponentially. And as the turbo for an engine is a part of a more complex and complete system, Kyusho is a part of any martial art, and can not replace the technical skill of the practitioner but can enhance any and all arts and techinques. Each martial art has its strategy, its principles and its techniques. If we analyze pure Kyusho I need the knowledge of 3 elements: an area to hit, an anatomical weapon to use, and what we call "Force Multipliers" to attack the opponent internally.

Kung Fu A look into the future When I talk to my students and people outside my school who follow our car eer, l am asked again and again where we are heading. Attentive readers know that one of my biggest endeavours is to introduce and maintain structure, which should secure the survival and growth of the art. In this article though, I would like to go a bit mor e into detail and inspir e others from the martial arts scene to think ahead and to secure their art.

Kung Fu Exams: Ever since the famous Shaolin monasteries exams have been used to test the level of students and to ensure the quality of the art. Up to this day, how else could it be, exams are relevant for, in my position, they present an opportunity to recognise a studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s potential during his education and to act accordingly. A long time ago, when the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER consisted of only one school, it was I who defined the educational programme up to the black belt and who put it down on paper. After many years of experience, this educational concept has been improved and has been developed into what we require from the student today. And in future we are going to improve it even more. This year, we are adding further aspects to the education up to the black belt, such as for example simple and predefined application exercises, which should help the student to achieve efficient self-defence more quickly and to make sure that the black belt is a reliable degree.

Teaching: Teaching has also been developed at my school over the years and is more efficient than ever. Everything, from the warm-up to the theoretical part at the end of each lesson, has its meaning and purpose and makes the training the valuable teaching that it is today. In future, in all probability there is going to be very little change in the teaching per se, as it is, as I have already mentioned, already very refined. However, my instructors and I are working intensely on supporting each instructor even more by means of tools such as lists or technical devices in order to professionalize the management of each branch. Whereas in the past a studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s level used to be recorded in dozens of heavy books, today we have access to modern technology and computers, which allow us to run our schools more efficiently and, perhaps, to even provide each student with a platform, on which he or she can log in to exchange thoughts with other students and on which he or she can assess his or her progress.

Shaolin Masters: My team has been organising the Shaolin Masters tournament for over 20 years now. At the beginning it was a mere tournament for children, which has developed into a full-fledged event with adult, Lei Tai and now also push-hands categories. Especially the latter should bring us, even more than Lei Tai, closer to reality, and thus reduce any possibilities of injuries to a minimum. With this category, we have not only fulfilled one of my sifuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishes, but we are also going to establish an unprecedented category. As a matter of fact, we have long since had electronic support due to our proven tournament software. Again, concerning the tournament, we are intending to implement more efficient processes and referee courses. And who knows, whether we can also make these successes, together with everything else, digitally accessible for the student? In any case, in comparison to other schools and styles, the Shaolin Masters has great potential and is an important priority in our plans.

Kung Fu Mega Event: Initially, my students organised this event in an effort to celebrate my birthday. Now the MEGA event, which is highlighted in each studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s calendar, has developed into a big gala evening. In a recent development, we are not just talking about one evening. We have extended this particular Saturday into the afternoon by organising instructive seminars. Before the big evening starts, the participants have the opportunity to get to know our art better at several small seminars. In future, it is not only our own instructors who are going to enrich the seminars in the afternoon, but also external masters who are invited as VIPs to the Gala dinner. As of yet, I do not want to predict precisely how the MEGA event is going to develop exactly. There are, however, many ideas and plans and if we implement only half of them, the MEGA event is going to develop into a real Kung Fu Expo.

Kung Fu World Kuoshu Federation: Today, international relationships in the traditional martial arts are more important than ever. Especially in a field that is based on physical training, it is important that one meets up in person to exchange ideas on a regular basis. My instructors and I try to take part in international events of high quality in order to demonstrate our Kung Fu to the world and to make new friends. My sifu once said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no use being the greatest and strongest, if nobody wants to have anything to do with you.â&#x20AC;? With this in mind, again and again we try to share our success with the community and to support our Kung Fu brothers by participating in events. And who knows, those numerous institutions and schools, with which our structure is popular, are going to adopt this very structure one day.

Assistant instructor education and training: A strong basis is important for the survival of an art like ours, so is to give the student the possibility of becoming a solid member of the senior instructor team. Ever since we have always trained particularly eager students to become an instructor. With the latest adjustments to the educational programme we have taken one step, which makes it possible for the student to get an excellent education. At the beginning, I was the only one who could make a living from the business of the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER. Today, there are already the first students who also teach full-time. And this should be possible for every student. With the new educational programme the student first is a candidate for assistant instructor, then assistant instructor, then instructor, and finally senior instructor. Thus, we enable people to fulfil their dream job or vocation and at the same time we bring our art forward and strengthen it. To summarise, there is one thing to be emphasised in particular: THE KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER is already one of the most successful schools in the martial arts scene or the biggest school in Switzerland as regards the traditional martial arts, respectively. And yet, as we can see from our projects and plans, we consider ourselves to be still at the beginning. It might very well be that my generation wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see it any more. But by means of our students, who are constantly growing in their numbers, and a team of senior instructors who is excellently educated, I am convinced that the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER has the potential to become one of the biggest martial arts schools in the world.

閉めの技巧 - Shime no Gik Strangling techniques Many are the combat techniques that seek choking up the opponent. At the beginning of the century, according to some ancient teachers, talking about strangulations was rather marginal and it was considered a pathologic thought, that is, it couldn't be normal for a master to teach it to his students. Nowadays, with the modernization of combat sports and especially of the game of submitting the adversary during confrontation, strangling has become just one more way within the innumerable forms developed to overcome the opponent. In order to further understand it, Shime Gikkō or Shime Waza techniques can be divided into two: 血止める - Chi Tomeru - Blood interruption 気止める - Ki Tomeru - Air Interruption We will begin the analysis with Chi Tomeru in those techniques that are applied to Kubi (neck). The heart pumps blood through a major artery, called the aorta. This main artery is then divided into several branches, forming successively thousands of minor arteries, so that each region of the body has its own system of arteries, that feeds it with fresh blood, rich in oxygen. Arteries are rigid on the outside and soft on the inside. An artery actually has three layers that make up its wall: an external layer of tissue, a medium muscular layer and an innermost layer,

formed by endothelial cells. The muscular layer is elastic and very resistant. The innermost layer is quite soft, so that the blood can flow easily, without obstacles in its path. The muscular wall of the artery helps the heart in its function of pumping blood. When the heart beats, the artery expands as it fills with blood. When the heart relaxes, the artery contracts, exerting a force that is enough to push the blood forward. From this rhythm between the heart and the arteries, an efficient circulatory system results. We ourselves can feel our arteries expanding and contracting. When arteries are in sync with the heart, the heart rate can be measured by counting the contractions of the arteries. This is how we control our pulse. The arteries drain the blood rich in oxygen into the capillaries, where the exchange of oxygen by carbon dioxide is actually performed. Then the capillaries drain the blood loaded with

substances excreted into the veins, which transport it back to the heart and lungs. When we talk about Chi Tomeru applied to the neck, we must have some knowledge about the main arteries that connect the heart to the brain. Carotid arteries: one on each side of the neck, send blood to the respective "half" of the brain, but in the front. Cerebral middle arteries: one on each side, inside the brain (arise from the internal carotid arteries). Vertebral arteries: one on each side of the neck (by the "inside" of the spine bones, send blood to the back of the brain).

These arteries, in turn, have their respective branches. Therefore, any change can affect brain circulation and determine a stroke. These arteries, in turn, present their respective ramifications. Therefore, any change to more or less can affect the cerebral circulation and determine a stroke. The most important function of the arterial circulation is the maintenance and control of blood pressure (BP), which is the force, or pressure, that blood exerts on the wall of the artery. BP depends on cardiac output (CO) and total peripheral resistance (TPR). When the Chi Tomeru takes place, the arterial, oxygenated blood delivery to the brain is interrupted. Naturally, to control the correction of this, there are chemoreceptors. They are sensitive to the lack of oxygen as well as to the excess carbon dioxide and hydrogen. They are located in the great arteries, near the baroreceptors. They are stimulated when the pressure drops below 80mmHg. In cases where there is a decrease in BP, there will be a decrease in blood flow to the tissues, with consequent accumulation of CO2 and H in the blood and decrease in O2 concentrations. These alterations stimulate chemoreceptors, which send a signal to the sensory zone of the Vasomotor Center, indicating that BP is decreased. The reflex response will be an immediate elevation of the BP, due to the stimulation of the vasoconstrictor zone and inhibition of the vasodilator zone. In the second type of Shime GikkĹ?, Ki Tomeru, the interruption is that of the passage of air and not of the blood circulation, as we have seen previously. It is one of the forms of

suffocation. Contrary to what is commonly thought, there are various forms of them that Legal Medicine classifies as: Choking - Direct: airway obstruction. Indirect: external mechanical means. Suffocation - Squeezing the neck with the agent's own hands, preventing the entry of air into the respiratory system (it is eminently intentional).

Strangulation - Mechanical suffocation caused by the constriction of the neck by an external force (intentional or accidental). Hanging - Constriction of the neck by the body's own weight; complete - hung; incomplete - not hung up. Drowning - Mechanical asphyxia caused by the penetration of liquid (any liquid). Burying - Mechanical asphyxia caused by the penetration of solids (any solid material). Confinement - Is the asphyxia caused by the isolation of a place (lack of atmospheric air). In the case of Ki Tomeru, obviously we are dealing with a strangulation. Once the air passage is interrupted, hypoxia is present.

For a long time in the most modern arts in which to seek harmony became more evident than the martial aspect of techniques, we questioned about the efficiency that made them inevitable. In an old time, trying to cause a moment of syncope in the enemy right before the execution of a technique was commonplace. We can see this in the older styles of Bujutsu where, most of the time, that was achieved through an atemi or something similar. Loss of consciousness, called fainting or syncope, occurs when the amount of oxygenrich blood that reaches our brain is not enough. W i t h o ut adequate oxygenatio n, the metabolism of the brain is reduced causing loss of consciousness, until the blood flow is restored. Sometimes there may not be prior notice. However, there is usually nausea or vomiting and

dizziness, sweating and paleness, the vision becomes blurred and finally, the affected person ends up losing consciousness. Approximately one minute after the fall, not existing the effect of gravity, the flow of blood to the brain is again restored and the conscience is recovered. Only about 20% of adults, faint due to a heart problem (arrhythmia or structural heart disease). In about 10% of people, the reason is unknown. In most cases, fainting can be due to a sudden drop in blood pressure and sometimes, also to a reduction in heart rate related to several factors. The ancient masters, with the help of Ijutsu - Oriental Medicine -, studied specific techniques using high impact ratio, thus seeking the alteration of body pressure. These techniques were developed in certain Ryu, who became famous for achieving skill and effectiveness in the use of these in combat.

There are many types of syncope: Neurocardiogenic Syncope - Emotional tension, staying for long periods in the standing position without moving, suspicion or sudden and severe pain can activate the interconnection between the neurological and cardiovascular system, after long periods in the standing position, without activity of the legs, which results in inhibition of the sympathetic nervous system and excitation of the vagal nervous system. This causes the rhythm of the heart to decrease rapidly and arterial pressures are reduced by dilation of the arteries. As a result, blood flow to the brain is reduced to levels which are incompatible with maintaining consciousness, so syncope arises, until the lying position allows the blood sequestered in the lower limbs to return to the heart and brain. Syncope due to postural hypotension - After quickly changing to the standing position. Upon getting up, the sympathetic nervous system is activated and hormones (catecholamines) are released into blood circulation. This leads to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure causing adequate blood flow to the brain, even in the standing position. Over the years, the capacity of this cardiovascular response, mediated by the autonomic nervous system,

is reduced. Standing up very quickly can lead to an abrupt drop of blood to the legs, causing the blood pressure to drop suddenly, which can lead to fainting. Diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, chronic alcoholism and some neurological diseases affect the sympathetic nervous system. Medication - Anti-hypertensives, antiarrhythmics and antidepressants are drugs normally associated with the loss of consciousness. These drugs can make the patient more susceptible to changes in blood pressure. They can also prevent the heart from moving faster, to respond to the needs caused by changes in position or physical exercise. These drugs can also be responsible for causing severe arrhythmias, which lead to loss of consciousness.

Specialists explain that an adult consumes at least 420 liters of oxygen (640 grams) in 24 hours and expires 420 liters of carbon dioxide (880 grams). When the proportions are not respected, hypoxia occurs. The first symptoms are compensatory reactions such as suffocation, heart palpitations and increased number of red blood cells. These reactions allow us to temporarily guarantee that the tissues meet the normal consumption of oxygen. If the lack of oxygen persists, the so-called "energy hunger" occurs, the pulse weakens and

the heart beats more slowly. Some people turn pale and begin to sweat cold. Hypoxia sufferers lose sensitivity and memory and have difficulty moving. In the most severe cases, there is fainting and loss of control of the sphincter (anal muscle responsible for the control of stools). Blood pressure falls, breathing stops and death comes. Thus, we understand that to carry out a Shime GikkĹ? technique, both in Chi Tomeru and Ki Tomeru, it's necessary to know these two functions of the human body - the blood circulation and the respiratory system.

Avi Nardia presents in this new and innovative DVD his approach to Israeli Martial Arts and especially to Israeli Jiu-Jitsu, developed on the basis of a vast experience as a Black Belt of different arts and instructor, among others, of the Yamam elite unit of the Israeli Special Forces. Stroeven Combat Systems My view on Eskrima differs from other instructors. Many people forget that Eskrima was developed in the Philippines ages ago to covertly fight the enemy and that people had to use weapons such as sticks and knives, spears and swords since they did not have firearms like the Spanish conquistadors. But centuries later it has become a sport even in the Philippines, not for self-defense purposes . Of course you can practice Eskrima as a sport but for me personally Eskrima is a martial art at first. I modernized it and made it accessible to anyone willing to train hard and to follow my way. I respect tradition but we are not a museum. Eskrima needs to have an answer to modern day aggression, be realistic and be ready for the 21st century. Developing Eskrima will be one of my main goals, now and in the future but we leave fighting concepts that are obsolete or ineffective.

I developed my style (Stroeven Combat Systems (SCS)) over a period of thirty years and it still develops. I started in Latosa Eskrima and trained by Bill Newman before I went to the Philippines. People still think that I learned Eskrima in the Philippines, but I started learning in Holland. Knife fighting I learned from my father. I went to the Philippines to train with various masters, I also learned a lot from them. And as leader of the Stroeven Combat System, an international organization that promotes Eskrima my teacher's staff and me continue the development of the various styles within Eskrima. In SCS we train stick fighting, also pocket stick, knife fighting, karabit, tonfa, machete, pangamot and tomahawk. Within SCS Eskrima is processed into a dynamic, realistic martial art that is fast taking a leading role in Europe. The knife fight plays a central role in my system. Only if you know how to use the knife, you'll know how to defend yourself against a knife. Every martial artist who is taking self-defense serious must seriously consider training with the knife. A great number of people practice Eskrima nowadays. In recent years, the different styles within Eskrima are becoming better known. Styles like Kali, Arnis are shown in movies like Rambo, The Bourne Identity or Hunted. In these movies Eskrima is shown in all its facets. Stick, knives and empty hand are part of the repertoire of famous actors who are trained by professionals. They depict the martial art spectacularly and this is one of the reasons that it is becoming increasingly well known. Perhaps

unwittingly, the actors became ambassadors for Eskrima. But people want the real deal; they want to learn Eskrima themselves. The good thing about Eskrima is that it has a wide variety of techniques, so anyone can get to work. Some people like knife techniques, some like empty hand, or stickfighting. Eskrima has it all. I have noticed that my seminars are really well attended. People all over the world enjoy them. Also my instructor courses were a great success and still are. I have also noticed that more and more teachers from other martial arts see Eskrima as a welcome addition to their own martial art. At the same time I see that they, once introduced, only want to practice Eskrima and nothing else. It happened that Krav Maga teachers learn Eskrima and its principles and incorporate the art into their own training. Some Krav Maga organizations learned Eskrima, knife fighting and give pangamot but call it Krav Maga. I consider this as a compliment. My seminars for Special Forces, like COT Commando Brazil and my seminars for the Philippine Military indicate that I'm on the right track. Eskrima should be a dynamic style that must adapt itself to all circumstances and needs to follow the spirit of the Eskrimador, who uses every weapon at hand. For me Eskrima is not about flashy drills, although they look nice. Drills are for training purposes only. I want my students to understand that Eskrima needs to be practiced realistic, hard, direct and simple. Aimed on taking out your opponent a.s.a.p. I will write about how I feel about Eskrima as selfdefense and Eskrima as sport. The meaning of tradition and what needs to be preserved and what in my opinion must be thrown out, I will be talking about Eskrima as a realistic fighting skill and write about certain practices in the Filipino martial arts. This all will be addressed and I elaborate about my experiences in the Philippines. I will be talking about techniques, principles and tips that you easily can apply into your Eskrima. About knife fighting Holland, home to about 16.8 million people, is a relatively small country. The Philippines are about seven times as large. There are approximately 103 million people living in The Philippines. This year 2013 there were 400 stabbings in Holland, 4,094 robberies, 421 shootings and in 905 cases, other weapons were used. In 2013 there were, 4,892 violent assaults in the Netherlands and the year is not over yet. In comparison, The Philippines recorded 34,825 violent incidents this year. Additionally, there were 26,988 registered robberies. What do these figures mean? I think it is this: Holland does not appear to be safer than the Philippines. Maybe The Philippines are even safer than Holland. According to the statistics, robberies and violent crimes in the Philippines are relatively rare. Important is this; in the western world, violence is everyday practice and often a variety of weapons are used. In many case knives are involved. And as you may know, the knife is an extremely violent and dangerous weapon, easy to carry, easy to conceal, quick to use and cheap to buy. Its use often leads to serious injuries. You have the right to selfdefence but you have to know how. Knife fighting is

dirty and real street fighters know the dirty tricks. Moreover, these criminals apparently are not afraid to use a knife.

Awareness I grew up in one of the poorest neighbourhoods of Utrecht. Utrecht is one of the larger cities of Holland. Violence was and still is a common occurrence. In the neighbourhood where I grew up, street culture ruled. Many young people carried weapons. Brass knuckles, bicycle chains, knives of all shapes and sizes. This afternoon (when writing this column) there was a severe stabbing incident in the neighbourhood where I grew up, an ambulance had to come.

Aggression My youth greatly affected the way I look at violence. Street violence is a very direct form of violence and can happen to anyone. Even without a clearly identifiable reason, you can be a victim of robberies, getting into fights, or worse: be injured. The street culture is in my genes. I remember my father took me to the gypsies and listened to their stories. You can't fool these guys. They are not afraid to use extreme violence. They could end up in jail but they couldn't care less. They showed me the dirty street tricks of street fighting, how they used a knife. I remember an old man with a hat who entrusted my father in a somewhat mysterious way: "Do you know Frans (my father has the same name as I have), how we fought before? He struggled to his feet out of his rocking chair, and suddenly grabbed his hat from his head and pushed the hat in the face of my father. At the same time he pushed his stiletto against my father's belly. The old man turned out to be pretty fast. His age did not seem to matter. This incident made a deep impression on me, since I was only a little boy. Later my father told me that the old gypsy lived half of his life behind bars. This kind of street tricks, I incorporated into my style.

Complete fighter Every Martial Artist who wants to become a complete fighter should learn to master the knife, only when you know how to handle a knife will you be able to defend against a knife. Knife fighting is an indispensable factor in realistic self-defence. In knife fighting you create a mindset that you cannot develop in unarmed combat. Only one error with a knife can

have fatal consequences. Mentally and psychologically the knife fight is important. Blood will flow during the fight. This can also be your own blood and you will have to accept that.

Philippines On one of my trips to the Philippines, a bodyguard accompanied me. They advised me to not travel alone to the more dangerous parts of Cebu. The bodyguard didn't fit the image of a bodyguard. We barely spoke. Until, of course, we came to talk about Eskrima and knife fighting. The man was armed with a pistol and housed a knife in his leg holster. He told me that he used a gun for long distance combat and for short distances a knife. But with the knife he only defended himself, he told me. For me this was an interesting comment because in reality everything you do with the knife is actually an attack. So I asked him why he did not use his knife to attack. His answer was simple: “if the opponent attacks with punches or kicks, I'll use my knife”, he said. He continued explaining: “I do not attack because the chance of being disarmed is much greater”. It is true that chances to be disarmed when your arm is stretched are increasing and you are also less likely to be able to place multiple counterattacks. In my style we are trying to tempt the opponent to stretch his arm. Then we counter with a stab to the abdomen at the time of the attack, in 9 out of 10 cases your opponent's head automatically goes down. The next attack is to the head. Of course disarmament is not always possible and necessary. A sting to the eyes or a kick to the groin can do the job as well. I immediately think of the words of a grandmaster in the Philippines, he spoke:

Run! ! Hide! ! Or FLY! ! These words, told to me by a grandmaster in the Philippines are in my way of thinking incorrect. In my opinion it should be: 'run! ! hide or fight'. To avoid a knife fight is of course is the best way to act because you could end up wounded or will not survive at all. Moreover, I am assuming that you do not go looking for a knife fight. Most people fortunately wear no weapons. But if you have no choice only one road remains open. Fight for your life and use every weapon that is available. This way of thinking suits a good Eskrimador. An Eskrima fighter does not need to learn different weapons as they are already well trained in the use of a stick and knife, and the techniques they mastered are suitable for use of different weapons. Through the understanding and mastering of Eskrima principles, you are able to use any weapon: chair, ashtray, belt, paper, pen, bottle, table, book or even a hat. Basically it means you can use anything to you disposal. Really everything is available. In my style, it means that if you do not have a knife or you lose it during the fight then you go on to Pangamot (Total Fight).

Everything is permitted and only one thing is key: Survival! ! Knife fighting in WKFS My style is built on more than 30 years' of experience. I am still working to perfect it because you never stop learning. Defence is not an option in my style. Defence is attack and attack is defence. Short actions associated with aggressive energy, functional footwork, realistic drills and using the blind spot of the opponent and obviously a right mind-set, can make a good knife fighter.

Important I promote knife fighting in a positive way and hope that my students do so as well. I refuse to teach people with bad intentions and disapprove if people carry knives on the streets. I want you to know that taking a life is easy but giving a life back is impossible.

The founders of WTU Wing Tsun Universe, GM Sifu Alfred Neudorfer and Si-Mo Rosa Ferrante Bannera, present a new work, focused this time on Chum Kiu, the second of the "solo" movements or classic forms of Wing Tsun, from the WTU perspective. The WTU Chum Kiu, or "4 waves", is especially characterized by the use of the falling step, the 3 basic kicks (a Wing Tsun slogan for kicks says that "each step is a kick, and each kick is a step"), and the arm bridges, long and short bridges, which determine the way we come into contact with the attacker. The DVD includes the execution of the complete Chum Kiu movement, the 4 Chum Kiu sections with 3 applications for each one of them, with the use of the 3 basic kicks and the arm bridges. Finally, the video shows the sequences 2-7 of the Chum Kiu movements with a training partner or ChiSao. An excellent work which presents to us a new way of experiencing both the "solo" movements and those with a training partner in the Art of Wing Tsun.

In this new work, Olivier Pierfederici shows the difference between real Close-Combat and Self-Defense, something that is not always too clear. TIGER AND DRAGON 5 ELEMENTS/ 5 TRAINING METHODS ELEMENT 4: Conditioning / Pad-bag training Conditioning exercises are the fourth element of the multi-dimensional Fu-Shih methodology In combat, in self-defense, the body is our weapon and the weapon must be forged, sharp, ready! The development of the body's weapons is carried out through appropriate kinetic, muscular and bone conditioning exercises. A careful planning in the management of stimulations is of primary importance. Observe the rules of continuity, graduality and recovery: practice constantly, regularly, starting with simple methods with controlled intensity, and then growing, increasing, in relation to the acquisition of the qualities necessary for enduring more intense and demanding exercises. Fu-Shih uses a synthesis of traditional and modern methodologies, through the use of different equipment. Each of these methods should not suggest a simple exercise of strength, the training of the Fu-Shih practitioner brings stresses on different levels. Effectiveness is achieved through correct balancing of these work plans.

Kinetic conditioning Structuring and strengthening of the most important kinetic chains, a strong conditioning work acts as a great fixer of coordinative skills indispensable to an adequate energetic expression. Not to be underestimated, in addition to the aspect of automation of the motor patter ns, the strengthening of the perceptive functions related to the management of timing and distance. Focus gloves and pao training is great for stimulating the learning of these qualities.

Muscle conditioning Regular work in focus, pao and punching bag, involves a continuous specific and extremely functional muscular conditioning. The Fu-Shih practitioner finds, in this working method, an extraordinary resource for the development of conditional abilities such as strength, speed and endurance. With the help of good equipment and skills in the subject, a good Master, Instructor or Coach is able to prepare his students bringing them to the simulation of a real fight, in terms of intensity, stress management and continuous variation of

the stimulations given.

Bone conditioning Arms like sticks, elbows like knives, shins like baseball bats ... hitting using our bony weapons gives an unimaginable efficiency to the technique, but, as my sensei teaches, Soke RaĂšl GutiĂŠrrez: "Nuestras armas deben ser buenas" !! !

Conditioning the bones takes time, attention, effort and physical and psychological management of pain. Pain can be our ally, learning to accept it and use it sparingly. Little pain brings no results, too much pain brings trauma. The secret: method, continuity and graduality !!!

First phase: Desensitization of impact points, so that the perception of pain is reduced. With the help of heavy bag and pao, through a constant and prolonged body stress, one can act effectively in specific points.

Second phase: with the help of more soliciting equipment, we will proceed to train in order to obtain a more functional bone structure. The bone tissue, the site of intense cellular activity, will be brought to a remodeling, through the action of specific cells: "osteoclasts", specialized in bone reabsorption, and "osteoblasts", specialized in the production of bone tissue ".

Third phase: test. The application of this training methodology produces extraordinary effects: coordination, power (strenght + speed), conditioned impact zones. The results are verifiable in action, testing the capacities obtained through sparring or, for the expert, through the breaking practices of resistant targets such as wooden planks, tiles or concrete blocks.
