Yearbook 2022/2023

Letter from the Principal

It is with great pride and joy that I write this section of our Annual Yearbook in our remarkable 3-18 school. This year has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I am truly humbled by the immense growth and achievements of our students. As an IB World School committed to providing an enriching educational experience and as a school which celebrates the best of the National Curriculum of the UK, we have witnessed tremendous progress in all aspects of our students' development.

One particular area that warrants special celebration is the remarkable accomplishments of our students in English. The vast majority of our students have English as an Additional Language, and their dedication and commitment to learning this language have been truly inspiring. The strides they have made in their English language proficiency are a testament to their resilience and determination. Their ability to communicate effectively and express themselves in English is a remarkable achievement that will undoubtedly open countless doors for their future endeavours.

Academically, our students have excelled in various disciplines, demonstrating their intellectual curiosity and thirst for knowledge. Their commitment to academic excellence has been unwavering, and their results reflect the dedication and hard work they have put into their studies. It is evident that our students have embraced the rigorous academic challenges presented to them, and their achievements are a testament to their commitment to personal growth and development.

Beyond the classroom, our students have thrived socially, fostering a vibrant and inclusive community. Their passion for building meaningful friendships and embracing diversity has been truly commendable. Our students have consistently shown a deep sense of loyalty to our school, and their genuine care and respect for one another have fostered an environment of support and inclusivity. Their unwavering commitment to welcoming and including every individual is a testament to their character and the values we hold dear.

In the realm of sports and the arts, our students have shone brightly, demonstrating their incredible talent and passion. Whether it be on the field, court, or stage, our students have showcased their determination, teamwork, and creativity. Their remarkable performances in various sporting events and artistic endeavours have brought us great pride and have further reinforced the importance of a well-rounded education that nurtures both the mind and body.

Furthermore, I am thrilled to share that our school has recently achieved great success in the COBIS accreditation process, recognising our commitment to high educational standards and outstanding behaviour. This is a testament to the exceptional conduct and behaviour displayed by our students on a daily basis. Their respectful and responsible attitude is a credit to all. It reflects the support of their families and the guidance of our dedicated staff. This achievement reinforces the values we hold dear and reflects the strong character and integrity of our students.

Looking ahead, I am delighted to share that BBIS will embark on a new academic year with the largest number of students in its history. This milestone marks an exciting chapter in our school's journey as we transition to becoming a fully 3-18 aged school. This growth speaks volumes about the trust and confidence our community places in our educational program, and it is a testament to the exceptional learning environment we have cultivated together.

As we conclude this academic year, let us take a moment to reflect on the incredible accomplishments of our students. Their dedication, perseverance, and outstanding achievements have set new benchmarks for excellence. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our students for their hard work, our staff for their unwavering commitment, and our parents for their continued support. It is through our collective efforts that we have fostered an extraordinary learning community, one that empowers our students to achieve more than they thought they could and make a positive impact on the world.

I am filled with immense pride as we celebrate our students' achievements in English and every other aspect of their growth. May their successes inspire and guide us as we embark - together - on new adventures in the upcoming academic year.

Welcome to Primary

As we approach the end of another incredible academic year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey we have shared together. It has been a year filled with growth, achievements, and cherished memories, and I am immensely proud of each and every one of our students.

Looking back, we have witnessed incredible academic progress, outstanding performances in the Arts and Sports alongside a whole array of special events and celebrations. .The Arts exhibition, Health week, Family STEAM day and Diwali, to name a few. Our academic scores for reading are at the highest level they have ever been and we have seen the impact of our focus on Oracy across the school with students sharing how much more confident they feel speaking in front of their peers. Our KS2 football team were victorious in a number of matches and the KS2 Drama club gave a stunning performance of Wonderland back in the Spring Term.

To our wonderful students, I want to commend you for your hard work, resilience, and enthusiasm throughout the year. You have embraced challenges, overcome obstacles, and discovered new passions and talents. Your creativity, curiosity, and willingness to explore have made our school community vibrant and dynamic. Each one of you has demonstrated remarkable growth, not only academically, but also as individuals. It has been a joy to watch you flourish and blossom.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the dedication and unwavering support of our exceptional teaching and support staff. They have gone above and beyond, adapting their teaching methods, providing guidance, and creating a safe, stimulating, and inclusive learning environment for our students to thrive in.

Parents and guardians, your ongoing support, trust, and collaboration have played an integral role in our collective achievements.

Your involvement in your child's education has been instrumental in their success. Your support at home, attendance at school events such as Parents in Partnership and collaboration with our teachers have strengthened our school community. Thank you for your continued support.

As we bid farewell to those students who are moving on from BBIS and our Year 6 students who graduate from Primary we celebrate their achievements and eagerly anticipate the bright futures that await them. Cherish the memories and friendships forged here, and embrace the challenges and opportunities that await you in the next chapter of your lives. Remember, as you embark on new adventures, you carry with you the knowledge, skills, and values instilled during your time at BBIS.

Looking ahead to next school year as we embark on a new chapter together and officially begin the Primary Years Program (PYP), I am confident that with such a strong foundation, our students will continue to thrive, become increasingly internationally minded, and contribute in making a positive impact on the world.

Foundation Stage 1 and 2 – Acorn

Dear Acorns and Cherries,

We remember your first, unsure steps when you entered our classroom, holding your parents’ hands. We had lots of fun together and made many precious memories.

Do you remember when Chester the Racoon stole our jam tarts? The donkeys we fed at the apple farm? Or the nest we build for the dinosaur eggs in the forest?

We watched you learn and grow, and we could not be more proud of you!

Enjoy your well-deserved summer holiday!

Lots of love, Mrs. Wilks, Miss Tapodi and Miss Nour

Autumn Term

Spring term

Summer term

What an amazing year we have had -I cannot believe it has come to an end. The adventures have been endless, from having Rapunzel come visit us, to making a deadly potion to stop the witches! Do you remember the WOLF looking in our classroom for the Three Little Pigs? Luckily you used your material knowledge to build even stronger houses to withstand the Year three wolves (Willow class)!

I have enjoyed learning about your traditions, cultures and how to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘Good morning’ in all of our different languages. We had some competitive sides come out as we watched the World cup games and to predict what the outcome of each one would be. It has hard to pick just one favourite memory as they have all been filled with fun and laughter. However, luckily escaping that lemur going to the bathroom above us is one of the tops.

I will miss you all as you move up to Year 2 (or to another school). I hope you continue to sing all of our songs and rhymes to help you in your learning and that you never forget how to spell ‘because’ (big elephants can always understand small elephants)!

What a lucky teacher I am to have watched you grow into independent, resilient and responsible little Pine cones! I will miss you lots!

Year 2 Olive

Dear Year 2 Olive,

We’re coming to the end of an amazing year, and what a year it has been! I’ve had so much fun being your teacher and we have made so many memories together. Some of my favourite memories are from our trips together, seeing you all have fun at the Science museum, and on our recent residential to Balatonboglar.

I am so proud of how hard you have worked this year, and all the progress you have made. You have been kind to each other and shown great resilience, particularly during the final Inquiry unit, where you showcased your learning to our buddy classes.

I wish you good luck in Year 3, continue the hard work and remember to have fun!

Dear Year 2 Olive Class,

I would like to say a big thank you to all of you for making this academic year so special! Every day has been different and every day I have learnt something new about you, as well as myself.

We have come a long way since last September and you have worked incredibly hard this year!

One of my favourite memories is when we went to the Science Museum. We all enjoyed that day so much and we have learnt a lot about Science.

We also had a lot of birthday celebrations, lots of cake and singing, and even more proud birthday smiles.

Of course, it makes me a little bit sad seeing you moving on and starting Year 3 soon, but it also makes me incredibly proud of the journey we have been on together.

I wish you all a lovely summer!

Year 2 Chestnut

Dear Year 2 Chestnut,

I am incredibly proud of our class and I thank you for all the memories I can treasure. This year has flown by and I have enjoyed every minute of our journey.

We have shared fun stories, inquiries, learning, lots of laughter and even some tears at times. A few of my favourite memories include watching you preparing and presenting your own puppet show to our buddy class, making handmade recycled paper and hearing you sing and play instruments at the KS1 Concert. It sounded so beautiful, it gave me goosebumps! Going to Balaton on your first overnight school trip was a wonderful way to finish the school year, where you proved that you are both responsible and risk takers!

The closing of one door is always the opening of another, so I wish you all the best in your next adventure in the coming school year!

The Year2 Chestnut class will always have a special place in my heart!

Love, Ms Holmes

Dear Year 2 Chestnut,

I'm so lucky to be a part of your learning journeys. I believe that the strong bond we have established with you will always exist even if we are not in the same class together. When I look back, I think of countless memories, activities, challenges and laughter that we experienced together. It is great to see how much each of you has changed and grown since day one. It was an incredible experience for me to get to know your unique personality traits and to watch these be reflected in your work. I cannot finish this letter without mentioning our trip to the Balatonboglar. We had so much fun and explored non-stop for two days. You all show how resilient you are, I am so proud of you! I will always remember each of you!

Love,

Year 3 Willow

Teaching you this year, watching you perform in numerous school events, and going on memorable trips this year has been such a wonderful experience.

You have looked after each other all throughout your learning and through this incredibly busy year! You have shown me grit during ‘An Out of this World Christmas’, how to be responsible while going on our numerous trips, you have demonstrated how to be risk takers during the All Stars Talent Show and resilience during our Sports Day! Last but not least, you have consistently shown how to create flourishing relationships with everyone around you.

Most recently, we have shared our final adventure during our Residential Trip to Eger which has been a fantastic way to end our school journey together!

It has been a year filled with laughter, and you have always kept your good sense of humour and your resilience. I hope that as you move upstairs, you will keep the same energy and can-do attitude!

Remember to be kind to another, work hard for yourselves and keep having fun!

Thank you for making my last year at BBIS all the more memorable.

Good luck to you all,

Dear Year 3,

It has been an incredible journey and I am so proud of you. You have worked so hard and made so much progress this year, not only in your learning but also socially and emotionally. I have so many wonderful memories but one that sticks with me is the Christmas performance, it was ‘Out of This World’ where each one of you had a part to play and did it brilliantly!

I have enjoyed our learning journey together but education isn’t just one way, I have also learned a lot from you too and for that I would like to say thank you.

I wish all the best to those students who will be leaving BBIS and for those staying, I look forward to hearing about life in year 4!

Keep up the good work, keep smiling and remember you are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to.

Have an amazing summer holiday!

Year 3 Acacia

Year 3 Acacia

Dear Year 4 Lapacho

It all started with a tree.

Working together to build up the symbol of our class was a team activity that really set the tone for our year. Everyone helped and had a role to play in assembling parts to make the whole. Just like in life, “everyone’s a piece of the puzzle”. This spirit of fun, creativity, and collaboration is what I will always remember when I think about my first year as a class teacher.

Any nervousness I had about stepping into the role quickly disappeared when I saw what an outstanding class you turned out to be.

Each personality and every member helped to make Lapacho shine so brightly - I felt even more fortunate to have taught many of you before!

It was immensely rewarding seeing how you had developed in your academic ability as students and flourished as confident young people since those early days in Year 2.

Throughout the year we have read brilliant stories together (for Literacy); had reflective conversations about all kinds of topics (for Jigsaw); brought electricity to cardboard towns (for Science); made delicious grape juice (for Hungarian Culture); performed perfectly onstage (in Wonderland!); searched for Tiny in an array of places (for Maths); and put on an incredible interactive migration exhibition (for People & Places) - it has been an amazing experience and I am proud of every single one of you.

It was my pleasure to teach you: never stop growing!

Year 4 Lapacho 2022/23

Year 4 Kapok

The year is almost over and what an amazing time we have had together. Within such a short space of time, we have grown, laughed (a lot) and learnt more than we ever thought we could!

Thank you for being the most incredible class and helping to create memories we will treasure forever. Your individual personalities mixed together brilliantly and without you all, the flamboyance and flair this class had would not have existed.

Some of my favourite memories from this year include your performance of the Haka in assembly, the Migration Exhibition showcase you presented to your families and our recent residential to Kecskemet. Your positive attitudes throughout these moments really shone through.

I am so proud of each and every one of you and know that you will continue to grow and be amazing people. Good luck in the next part of your journey!

Year 5 Palm

Dear 5 Palm,

What an incredible journey we have had in 5 Palm, filled with exciting experiences and unforgettable memories. From buddy class, the world fair, making a podcast, the zoo trip and residentials to science adventures, The Solympics, Wonderland, making water-powered cars and the leadership conference, we took part in a wide range of activities that helped improve our learning and brought us closer as a community.

It has been a pleasure to teach each and every one of you. You are a great group of students whose kindness, smiles, positive attitude and desire to help have shone through for the whole year.

As the year progressed, we experienced the bittersweet departure of some classmates. Shyla, Eden, Parker, and Marko left our class, and we wished them well in their new endeavours. However, we warmly welcomed Edvin and Anton, who joined our class and quickly became cherished members of our community.

I will never forget Deniz singing "Good morning Mr. Wolverson," every morning. Zeti impressing us all with his encyclopaedic knowledge of countless subjects. Laci and Aurel becoming our resident experts on European football. Grace's eagerness to start all tasks with enthusiasm and dedication.

Year 5 was a year of growth and exploration. We faced challenges, celebrated achievements, and built lasting friendships. As we bid farewell to this incredible year, we carry with us the lessons learned, the memories shared, and the new adventures and opportunities for us to shine that await us in Year 6. From Mr. Wolverson.

Year 5 Baobab

Year 5 Baobab

Year 6 Banyan

Dear Banyan,

What a superstar class you have been this year. The things I will miss the most are:

● Listening to Alexandra and Luca's preppy harmony singing in the lift and on Vienna public transport

● Lorinc’s piano playing and regular reminders that Emerald are superior

● Watching Yu Geon save goals against the Year 5 footballers

● Hearing about the scary and romantic stories Sadem has been reading in her Library books

● Gaining a deeper understanding of science, tax and programming from Aron

● Practising English (and Turkish) with Arya

● Seeing Orsi's amazing fashion choices on non uniform days (I hope you achieve your dog fashion designer dream!)

● Daniel beating me in Wednesday Wordle. Every time I hear the word capybara I will now also think of you.

● Grisha's European football updates and video recording skills. Watch out YouTube.

● Niko’s punctuality and tidiness helping to keep Banyan a hospitable place

● Watching Hyeonu play chess on rainy days and train journeys

You have made me laugh and smile so much these past months and I hope that your final year in Primary school has been the best.

It’s time to take all that knowledge and all those skills forward to the next stage.

Remember….’change is good, it’s healthy’.

Year 6 Oak Dear Students,

As this school year comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we have shared together. It has been an absolute privilege and joy to be your teacher, and I am filled with a mix of emotions as we bid farewell to this chapter of our lives.

First and foremost, I want to express my immense pride in each and every one of you. Throughout the year, I have witnessed your growth, determination, and unwavering commitment to being absolutely awesome. You have faced challenges head-on, embraced new concepts with open minds, and pushed yourselves beyond what you thought possible. Looking back on the memories we have created together, there are so many moments that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

From our laughter-filled classroom discussions to the fascinating projects you undertook, every single day was filled with rewarding moments. I will always cherish the times we shared, whether it was celebrating your successes, supporting each other through difficulties, or simply enjoying each other's company during our class activities. From litter picking at the start of the year, to our wonderfully awesome class trip to Vienna, you have given me many fond memories.

Yours faithfully,

Primary Performing Arts

Performing Arts is a massive part of life at BBIS and a great opportunity for our many talented students to show and grow their talents.

For the past two terms the four year groups from EYFS up to Year 3 have enjoyed a programme of singing-based approaches to musical understanding, practice and performance. Every child has had the chance to sing, and often also play instruments, in front of others, on top of the broader work of learning how to interact as a group. Additionally, the weekly music assemblies have been opportunities to watch and listen to informative and entertaining audio-visual presentations of the varied world of music given by professionals and made by film documentarists.

For Key Stage One children their work led to a most enjoyable summer-term concert, attended by their parents, teachers and the Early Years children. The quality of the children’s singing, playing, commitment and enthusiasm was impressive and heart-warming. The Early Years cohort had their own songs-presentation before the Easter Break, and both they and the Year 3 group, for whom we didn’t manage to schedule a formal concert event in the second half of the year following the success of the earlier Christmas concert, have been taking part in the end-of-year Talent Show.

The collaboration between the regular teaching staff and the music programme has contributed most valuably to the year’s work. As well as the musical input of the classroom teachers during regular lessons, for the summer term the Year 3’s were involved in a water-themed project which included a musical bowls experiment and a sea-shanty in parallel with their classbased learning.

We have also run a weekly “Sing and Move” club in which the elements of dance and game-playing have come to the fore. This was also the chance for children of a wider age-range to come together and learn and play together.

In Year 5 and 6 this year, students performed a puppet show, ‘The Next Big Santa’, ‘The Perfect Story’ and ‘When I grow up’productions that were put together with only a half term of preparation and a lot of input and ideas from the students themselves.

We ended the year with an All Stars talent show - a great opportunity for students to share some of their more unique talents from card tricks, painting to piano and poetry reading.

The Primary Performing Arts program in KS2 offers a variety of extracurricular activities that enrich students' artistic and creative development. Some highlights of the program include the KS2 choir’s performance at the Winter Concert and the drama club's performance of "Wonderland the Musical": The drama students spent a term rehearsing, building sets, and perfecting their performances. "Wonderland the Musical" showcased their talent and creativity, providing an opportunity for students to shine on stage and entertain the school community.

Primary Physical Education (PE)

Dear Sports Stars,

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” – Michael Jordan

This year, as well as focusing on physical development, we have also explored the importance of using our heart (compassion, teamwork, etc.) and head (strategy, problem solving, etc.) in sport. You have risen to the challenge, and we are so proud of the athletes you are becoming!

We love your enthusiasm for PE, as well as your knowledge and commitment to lead a healthy lifestyle! Keep it up over the Summer, ready to smash it again next year!

From Team PE!

Primary Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

The Modern Foreign Languages Department at BBIS offers German and Spanish to all BBIS students. Learning a modern foreign language is vital to becoming a global citizen, as it helps the learner to appreciate the language, culture and people of another country; appreciating their similarities and differences. Our curriculum aims to construct learning around relevant and authentic situations and develop the four skills: speaking, reading, writing, and listening.

Our highlight this year was celebrating the European Day of Languages. After lunchtime, students had the opportunity to have a lemonade provided by the school served by MYP students. It was amazing to see our wonderful students giving their best to practise the foreign language they are learning at school.

Primary Computing

Computing in BBIS addresses digital citizenship, computer science and information technology. Through the six primary years, students are learning about the protection of personal information, netiquette, cyberbullying and selective searching to prepare them for an independent and responsible online life. We discover computational thinking in different ways, giving simple instructions to floor robots and using a variety of coding platforms from Scratch Jr to imagi, reinforcing the understanding of algorithms and the importance of debugging. As part of Information Technology, students are introduced to a variety of applications through iPads and Chromebooks for creating presentations, learning how to take photos and evaluate their quality, creating and editing audio and video, and learning ways of 3D design. Students are working on iPads or Chromebooks and with BeeBots, Micro:bits and imagi Charms during their Primary studies. Computing-based clubs also took place this year such as the 3D design club. During the open Computing room break times, students have the opportunity to practise typing, 3D design, coding or to catch up with their digital tasks.

As a tradition now, BBIS joined the Week of Code in December, joining this global event organised by hourofcode.org. In year 6, students engaged in a “Take a screen break” session where they discussed how much time should be spent online, they also started their Google Workspace training to be prepared for their MYP journey. During World Book Day year 5 and 6 students were coding parts of their literacy books in Scratch. As part of our ROOTS programme, students in KS2 all had a chance to work through the Design Cycle using 3D design skills, completing the City X project. Year 4 had a visitor from https://imagilabs.com/ which is an award-winning start-up based in Sweden, offering a fresh take on EdTech, gaming, and social impact.

Primary Visual Arts & Design

Primary Visual Arts & Design at BBIS provides students an open space to explore ideas and record their experiences by producing creative work in a range of mediums. Individual expression is explored through projects that inspire and challenge students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. From EYFS to Year 6, students continue to build proficiency in drawing, painting, sculpting, textiles, collage and additional interdisciplinary techniques. Students learn the language of art and design to evaluate and analyse the creative works of others, as well as to be able to think critically about the development and refinement of their own abilities. It is a highly cross-curricular subject, engaging students in open discussion on the global impact of art and design, and its contributions to shaping society and culture.

This year we opened the first Makerspace that became a hub of creative learning. A place not only for Visual Arts lessons but also for our new ROOTS programme promoting STEAM education, allowing for students to obtain practical skills in Cooking and Design & Technology. The Makerspace was also the centre for the Art Masters Club where students played a pivotal role in this year’s theatre performance of ‘Wonderland’. From designing backdrops to constructing all props and all set pieces, club students were involved in every step of the stage production process. During break times throughout the week, the Makerspace was also open to students to extend their learning either through self-directed projects or special projects commissioned by teachers for various events. Having such a well-equipped and dedicated space really made a difference in growing the Visual Arts & Design curriculums this year and opening up new possibilities for the future.

Primary Hungarian

The language and culture of the host country are really important for us as an international school. Therefore, at BBIS, there are two different methods being used for host language acquisition.

For non-native speakers of Hungarian - including students who don’t even speak a word in this language - BBIS offers an introduction to Hungarian Language and Culture lessons twice a week. In these lessons, students learn basic words and phrases, funny or interesting traditions and customs that can sometimes come useful when they meet new friends or go shopping! Through various games and activities, all focusing on communication, children can become a little more familiar with this beautiful language and exciting culture. For a broader understanding, the Culture lessons are held in English.

For native Hungarian speakers, there are 3 lessons of Hungarian a week. These are based on the Hungarian national curriculum about Literacy, Grammar, Composition writing, and also History in Year 6 and MYP.

The aims of these lessons are very similar to the students’ English / Literacy lessons. Our main goals are to develop communication skills and reading: reading both fluently and accurately, while developing different comprehension strategies and playing with the language. We believe that learning one’s mother tongue, the exact use of the language including syntax and a rich vocabulary, allows our students to orient themselves and thrive in their current and future lives as they explore their own culture, history, and traditions to create a proper overview and meaningful understanding of their country.

For all classes - native and non-native Hungarian learners - we put emphasis on celebrating the national holidays, and traditions throughout the year, studying unique folk tales and songs. Taking advantage of the local opportunities, we organise field trips and visits related to the curriculum.

Roots!

This year, we introduced Roots to our curriculum and it was a huge success! Our budding young chefs became more confident in the kitchen cooking up tzatziki, eggs and blueberry muffins, to name just a few. In Helping Hands, students planted, tidied and created all with the goal of helping our community. Bikeability gave students the key skills needed for bike maintenance and some cycling proficiency too. CityX saw some incredible designs which were carefully thought out, designedandprintedtoachieveagoal.Using woodworktoolsconfidentlyandsafelyinDragon's Den, students were able to make their own pen pot, each with a unique design. In Spotlight, our movie makers improved their video scripting and editing skills. Students in Mini Roots club, also developed skills in all of these different areas too! We've loved seeing your enthusiasm for these importantlife-skills!

Library

Our students grow and develop into the best people they can be so that when they graduate or leave to move onwards in their education, they can make the world a better place.

Welcome to MYP

This year has seen the MYP in full flow. With the introduction of the IDU week, Service Learning Projects, expedition trips to Thailand and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The drive in student leadership and student-led projects has been excellent to behold across this year. With MYP2 students launching the BBIS Morning Radio, and MYP4 student taking it upon himself to organise an inter-house sporting event.

GROWTH

This year also saw our MYP5 cohort undertaking the full MYP assessment with many of the student's as MYP Certificate candidates, we look forward to their results in August.

As many of you are aware the school is growing and this has seen many new students enter the MYP here at BBIS and they have integrated extremely well and with the open, caring arms of our student body, they are now fully immersed as part of the BBIS family.

I look forward to seeing how much further the MYP at BBIS can continue to grow and flourish as the students begin to take more ownership and drive in their learning and projects.

As we say goodbye to this academic year, carry with you lessons you have learnt, the friendships you have built, cherish the memories we have created together and use them to inspire you in the years to come.

Congratulations on all that you have achieved and I wish you a Summer Break full of adventures. All the best on the next phase of your academic journey. From Mrs Olga González

Dear MYP1OG,

The residentials were very nice. We got to do a bunch of fun activities like hiking, cycling, rafting, and ziplining. The hotel itself was also good. It was fun getting to meet some of the other students as well as being able to see beautiful mountains and lakes. Additionally, the tour in Vienna was informative and interesting and we also got to shop in Vienna at the Schoppen strasse. We also had Valentin be a DJ for our last night and put on some songs. That was also really nice. Overall the residentials were super fun.

MYP2 ETC

Well done, MYP2ETC! It has been an amazing journey being your tutor teacher this year. From the very beginning, I knew this tutor class was something special, and you have proven that time and time again. Your enthusiasm, dedication, and support for one another have truly made this an amazing tutor group. Keep nurturing your love for learning, pursue your passions, and never stop challenging yourselves. It has been an absolute pleasure being your tutor teacher, and I wish you all the success and happiness in the world.

We were excited to hear about how the Children in Need Day was coming up and how we could contribute. We decided to perform Another Day in Paradise by Phil Collins and record it. We later sold the edited version for money and donated what we could to the charity.

Our 1st tutor teacher was Miss O'sullivan. She was kind and nice, and our tutor room was the library classroom. When we were in Miss Édua’s tutor group for the first couple of days it was weird having to walk to the 4th floor instead of going to the ground floor but we got used to it. Just like Miss O’sullivan Miss Édua is also kind and nice. Overall the transition wasn’t hard and we would like to thank both of our tutors for their hard work.

On the Language Day, we needed to represent countries which speak Spanish or German. Our tutor group made a display about Argentina and wore the clothes that have the colours of the Argentinian flag. Zalan brought Argentinian foods and I drew some sketches that represent Argentina. It was Messi, a couple dancing tango and guess what! The sketch of Messi is still in the tutor room. Others decorated the room, made a Tik Tok dance, gave presentations and made a Kahoot! about Argentina. Later on, we could go around and look at the other tutor groups’ displays. It was interesting and joyful.

From the students: This year was an awesome time together. We had lots of fun in this homeroom. Overall our favorite activity was when we made Guacamole, on International Day. We played Mario Kart on Children in Need Day. We also played some card games. We had a thing called Talking Tuesday where we had to do a presentation about any fresh news or something that you are passionate about. We lost a member who needed to leave to go back to Ukraine. We really hope Mr. G will have a good time in his new school. Wish you the best MYP JG!

MYP 2 JG

From Mr. G: MYP 2s have always been my favorite class, even last year when you were MYP 1s. So when I heard I would be your homeroom (tutor) teacher, I was really excited! I am so proud of how far you've gone in the year that I have known you. Maybe we had the highest strikes, and maybe we didn't score very many points on the weekly quizzes, but I honestly enjoyed working with you in Language and Literature, and in Drama class. The growth you all showed despite your personal struggles is commendable. You are all amazing people, and I hope we can stay in contact. I wish you the best for your futures, and know you will all be successful in whatever you choose. You are strong-willed, opinionated, and passionate-- never let anyone tell you to be less. Know that there is always at least one teacher who is rooting for you, who has your back, and who will always support you, even from a distance. I will honesty miss seeing your faces every morning. Good luck to you, and I hope to see you all soon.

Dear MYP2SF,

AS the school year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting and thinking about the past year and what a journey it has been! I just wanted to express my gratitude and appreciation, and say how truly fortunate I feel having you as my tutor group for my first year at BBIS.

From the first day, I have been made to feel welcome, embraced my passion for teaching and learning and shown your enthusiasm for learning! I have loved having you all as my tutor group, and I hope next year I will have you all again. Although you come to the end of MYP2 and this is a sad moment, we must look forward to all the new journeys and new memories that you will make come next academic year! I just hope that I am as big a part of that next year, as I was this year.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your MYP2 experience, as a teacher and a tutor. I will cherish the memories we have made together but I look forward to making new ones in the future! To those moving on, I wish you well wherever you end up!

Wishing you all the best!

MYP2 SF

From Mark, MYP2SF:

“It has been an amazing year for me. I really enjoyed the time I was here. My favourite memory was when we had the secret Santa activity. And going ice skating. It was just amazing and very fun. To anybody who is leaving, please keep working hard on your goals and never give up. Always have motivation and if you have a goal and somebody is trying to be in your way, just keep pushing forward. My favourite subject was I and S and design this year. I truly enjoyed all the activities that we’ve done. I also enjoyed all the different quizzes on Friday’s, it was very exciting to look forward to them!“

From Sev, MYP2SF:

“I enjoyed tutor times, really loved these activities with decoration doors, playing games and doing quizzes and I loved Secret Santa so much, for me, it was the best of all others. I hope next year we will have even cooler tutor time.“

From David,

MYP2SF:

“It was really fun being in this tutor with all my close friends. I really enjoyed all the quizzes we have done and then discovered how wrong we were. Our class was the loudest then. It was fun getting to know everyone and if you are leaving, then have a good life, but if you are staying, then see you next year.”

From Masa, MYP2SF:

“I liked that my friends were in the same homeroom and we talked every morning. We had a lot of fun every morning and they were really happy when I wasn't late and I wore the correct uniform. I actually liked the Friday quizzes, shout out to Mr. Bell.”

From Miriam, MYP2SF:

“I thank this homeroom for always talking and waking me up in the morning even though it was only 8:30 a.m. I know this has been a hard year for us but next year is our last year of middle school and then we’ll be high schoolers. Yay! Hang in there, one more year to go. Thanks Mr Bell and Mr Fleming for keeping up with us. I also enjoyed the democracy in the Homeroom quizzes weekly! ♥ Köszönöm. Hogy birtad amikor nem bírtam megtanulni a verset.”

What a year it has been 3DW/TH. We have seen so many amazing achievements and progress throughout the year. It has been amazing to add Achinoam, Ella, Hlib and William into our family. Seeing all students integrate into the group and make some solid friends has been a pleasure to see. Well done all on your participation in the tutor events. The Friday quiz has been a personal highlight of Mr Wheatley’s - We have really invested time and this effort paid off by winning the lower school Term 3 quiz. Well done.

Christmas Door Decoration – Ella

The Christmas door decoration in our homeroom started off a bit wonky at first, as we didn’t do much to prepare, but then a few days before we finally leaped into action and started brainstorming. We thought of the Grinch as he is a funny and good character that represents Christmas. We also decided that some of us don’t have Christmas in the cold winter with snow and ice so people were quite open about making it a summer theme. We liked that it was inclusive of everyone’s Christmas celebrations, so we decided to put the Grinch on a surfboard surfing with a sunset in the background.

Talking Tuesday - Ema

For our Talking Tuesday each week on a Tuesday we would create a presentation about something that interested us and something that we wanted to spread awareness about. Most of the time the news we choose was negative because currently in the world there are many problems and it is difficult to be able to find something positive. It was an opportunity for us to share things we like so our classmates get to know and understand us better. We would take a vote on who goes each week to make sure that everyone gets a fair chance and make sure that not only the same people go every time.

Friday Quiz - Achinoam

For the whole year every Friday morning we were all excited to do the quiz. During the quizzes everyone from the class got to show their knowledge and strengths, with the cooperation of all the class members we reached some amazing results. Sometimes there were disagreements within the group and we had different opinions about some of the questions, but we voted with understanding and respect from all the members of the group, we chose the answer that suited most of us. At the end of the last term of the year we even won the title of the class that achieved the most points in MYP1, 2 and 3.

MYP3 DW/TH

The First Day of School - Hlib

The first day of school literally was the day when we were meeting each other for the first time or from the summer holidays. The main goal of the day was to find out more about everyone’s interests and to know more about each other. We managed to achieve this goal through various activities. The first activity that we were doing was to come up with the adjective that starts from our first name’s letter and it had to represent ourselves. Another activity was to create the poster with something that represents us, additionally with the birthday date. As a result of the first day of school, we discovered major characteristics, qualities and singularities about everyone individually.

Languages Day

In Languages Day we were all working collaboratively to make a nice homeroom that represents Germany. We made a Canva presentation and also danced a traditional German dance. We also had some food that is from Germany. For example, we had Haribo, Kinder and other candies from Germany. We were going to other people's rooms and doing their quizzes and eating their food. Overall it was a very fun day that I won’t forget.

MYP3 LT/ID Tutor Group

It has been a pleasure to take over from Miss Thomas’s tutor group this year. As she left to go on maternity leave in April to have her healthy baby boy. I have enjoyed my time with these wonderful students, with dependable Matvii and Lilla always being late. But we love listening to Mira’s radio. Keep up the dancing Lovre!

Dear Students,

Let’s be honest: I was nervous about taking on the role of tutor, but I was also excited about the opportunities ahead. At the closing of the year, I can happily say that I have been your tutor throughout this journey. From your enthusiasm for the Friday morning quizzes to some seriously harrowing experiences (Terror Haza).

Remember: You’re all smart. Distinguish yourself by being kind.

I am immensely proud of all that some of you have achieved, and I hope that you always try to be the best version of yourself. Please remember that I am always here to support and cheer you on, no matter where your paths may lead.

Peace, Himani Sood

“The MYP4 BBIS program focuses on supporting students in MYP 4 with their academic challenges. Our experienced tutors are experts in their respective fields and help students unleash their full potential. They provide personalised learning support to meet the needs of each student. The interactive teaching methods help active learning and provide a pleasant learning environment. Through regular progress evaluations and feedback, they keep parents and us students informed. The individual guidance and support from my tutor have helped me improve my language skills significantly. Moreover, my confidence has been strengthened, making me feel increasingly secure in speaking English and expressing myself in everyday situations. The interactive learning methods and the focus on active learning have made my lessons dynamic and exciting. I take pride in my personal achievements and am grateful for the support of my tutor, who has helped me unlock my full potential. Ich have viele fehler gemacht aber manchen hier mit meinem computer ladekabel anzuvertrauen oder meine stiffte ‘’auszuleihen’’

war vielleicht einer der grösten. Das Jahr war sehr schön aber das lustigste war fast jede pause mich mit meinem freunden in den musik zimmer geschlichen habe weil es drausen zu kalt war.“

“The morning tutor times were a great starter for the days ahead. From the Sustainable Development Goals presentations to the Friday interactive quizzes. Ms.Himani was always very chill, and we appreciated her in the tough moments. For my classmates: Some of you have been great this year and others have been horrible, both academically and personality wise. It is with deep sorrow or pleasure that the year ends, depending on who reads this :) I will share a famous farewell quote, just because I am fancy: “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go” – Oscar Wilde”

“During music this year we focused on many things, a little too many at once. We focused on working together to make music for our Christmas festival, learned to play chords on the piano to start off on how to play on a piano, and had many different experiences with different types of instruments and ways to play or make music. There were also musicals and other tasks connecting to how interactions between music and real life. Like how music affects people's beliefs and likings, and what it has become throughout history and how it changed. All together it was very eventful and we had to put in work every time as music isn’t gonna make itself.”

As we turn the final page of this chapter, let us pause and reflect on the remarkable journey we have shared this year. We have navigated uncharted waters, faced unexpected challenges, and emerged stronger than ever. The resilience and unity we displayed have been truly inspiring. Together, we have grown not only in knowledge but also in character. We have fostered meaningful connections, celebrated accomplishments, and embraced diversity. Our collective spirit has shone brightly, lighting the path for a brighter tomorrow. As we look ahead to the next school year, let us carry the lessons learned and the bonds forged. With excitement and anticipation, let us embrace new beginnings, fresh opportunities, and endless possibilities. Together, we will continue to create a nurturing and empowering environment, making every day a stepping stone towards success. Here's to a year filled with growth, laughter, and unforgettable memories. May the coming chapters of our journey be filled with endless joy and prosperity.”

“As the end of the year is just around the corner we try to think back to the nice moments of this year, if there were any nice moments which didn’t involve any strikes or detentions. This year did have its fair share of fun and funny moments, and had some really wholesome ones as well. It won’t be a year that I’ll forget anytime soon. I can also thank our teachers for helping us in learning and in caring for us to succeed. Summarising the whole year was interesting and pretty eventful.”

“As I find myself approaching end of the year in BBIS, I am overwhelmed with profound sense of happiness. Joining BBIS has been remarkable and I am extremely grateful to all the teachers, staff and fellow students. Academically, BBIS has exceeded my expectations in every aspect. The passionate and dedicated teachers have gone above and beyond to ignite my curiosity and foster a love for learning. Their innovative teaching methods and personalised guidance have empowered me to push beyond my limits and discover new potentials. All the teachers have been extremely kind and supportive throughout the whole year which I am truly thankful for and I believe that next year is going to be even more thriving, flourishing for all of us!”

“When I think about the tutor time each morning, what comes to mind is Mr. Walters’ mood. He was always energetic and tried to make us feel good on each and every one of our mornings in the school. Despite the fact that he would always ‘say goodbye’ with the sentence: “Get out my life, leave me alone!”. This became a habit and everyone got used to it in 4RW. This personally made every day I started with our tutor, Mr. Walters.“ - Sara

“Throughout this tutor time, we have experienced countless memorable moments. The classes were filled with funny anecdotes shared by Mr. Walters. He would always say, "Ask me at lunchtime!" when he couldn't provide an immediate answer. And once, in jest, he exclaimed, "Get out of my life, leave me alone!" which always brought a smile to our faces. The tutor time also fostered a sense of unity and friendship.” - Akos

“The tutor class at BBIS has been an invaluable part of my educational journey, providing me with a positive and enriching experience that goes beyond traditional classroom learning. First and foremost, the tutor class has allowed me to form meaningful connections with both my peers and tutors. Through regular interactions, I have built strong relationships based on trust, mutual respect, and support. These connections have not only fostered a sense of belonging and community within the school but have also provided a support system where I can seek guidance, share ideas, and collaborate on various academic and personal endeavours. Thank you for the year everyone, it was very funny and I am looking forward to seeing you next year!” -

“Mr. Walters, our dedicated tutor, brightened our mornings with a multitude of enlightening lessons, sprinkled with a generous dose of humour. As a teacher, he skilfully guided me in adapting to the school environment, fostering an enjoyable and enriching learning experience. His presence was invaluable to me, and I hold him in high regard as an exceptional educator. Tutor time provided an engaging platform where I thrived, benefiting from Mr. Walters' wisdom and wit. I cherish the memories of his tutelage, as he instilled in me a love for learning and became an indispensable part of my educational journey.” -

“Our tutor group was a symphony of personalities, a medley of diverse instruments playing in perfect harmony. Each one of us was a star in our own constellation, shining brightly with unique talents and quirks. Together, we formed a tapestry of growth, woven with threads of laughter, tears, and late-night cramming sessions. Like a garden of blooming flowers, we blossomed under the guidance of our tutor, who was a magician wielding the wand of knowledge. Through storms of exams and tempests of assignments, we stood tall as resilient oak trees, weathering the challenges and emerging stronger than ever. Together, we were a constellation of brilliance.”

감사합니다, 좋은 1년이였어요. 제가 아무리 잘못한 게 있더라도, 제 말을 잘 들어주고 저를 존중해주셔서 감사합니다. -
Yichan A.

MYP 5 started this year by welcoming new students from Korea, Russia, China, Australia, Ukraine, Germany, Turkey and Romania, bringing new cultural perspectives and friendships to the class. The year group continued to grow throughout the year, bringing students from China, Russia, Hungary and Panama.

They began the year excited to partake in the new MYP options, expanding their knowledge in the Sciences, Arts and Physical Education. Many of the students thrived in the Performing Arts, in particular Ashton and Josh, who helped Mr. Ginnity in directing the lower school performance. Josh and Anna also won partial scholarships through the Immerse Essay Writing contest.

The MYP5s also represented the school in multiple sporting events, including HS Volleyball and Basketball. A highlight was the girls team achieving second place in the DVAC High School Junior Varsity tournament. Unfortunately, they were not able to beat the teachers during the Children in Need volleyball tournament.

Throughout the year they enjoyed new opportunities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh walks, and new challenges such as the Personal Project and e-Portfolio. Projects ranged from dressmaking to brain dissecting, board games and works of art. The whole class should be very proud of the products they created and presented to their peers, it is lovely to see months of hard work pay off!

MYP5

Towards the end of the year, the MYP5s faced the stress of eAssessments looming ahead of them. However, with hard work and a high five, hug or handshake they all survived, and look forward to starting the Diploma Programme next year.

Some students had the opportunity to travel far and wide, to Switzerland on the ski trip, Thailand to volunteer with turtles, and Slovakia on the end of year residential.

They may be sad to see some friends, classmates and teachers leave this year, but these students have grown into strong, intelligent, well-rounded young people, and I have no doubt that they are ready for whatever the next chapter may bring!

Some of the students reflected on their experience in MYP5- from people who have only been with us for 1 year, to a student who has been at BBIS for 7 years!

“During my seventh year spent here in BBIS, my favourite memory I can recall is when MYP4 & 5 went ice skating to Városliget in Budapest. It was iconic when we tried to teach Mr. Bell, how lots of us have spent hours laughing while eating ‘kürtöskalács’.” Mark B

“I only joined MYP this year and was surprised by the differences between other school programs. The whole MYP program was memorable for me, I had never seen anything like it before.”

“This year, the project I enjoy the most is the E-portfolio for design, I feel proud of this as this is the most completed project which inspired me the most.” - Linglang

Message from Mrs Porritt:

I am so proud of you all, and all you have achieved this year. You have shown determination, resilience and kindness to each other as you have faced the demands of meeting deadlines, completing e-portfolios and sitting challenging exams. You have cheered each other on in sports competitions and tutor time quizzes, helped each other study and revise, and looked after each other when things felt difficult. I have had the privilege of seeing all of your Personal Projects, and discovered what really matters to you- learning about wood turning from your Grandfather, finding ways to help young children with Special Needs, learning about what it takes to run a successful business or sharing your enthusiasm for the country that you are living in. I can’t wait to see what you will achieve next!

This year in Languages and Literature with Mr. G, we did a lot of different things. Firstly, we got really into Comics, and we read and made different Comics ourselves. Secondly, we started getting more into fiction and fantasy. We read "Artemis Fowl," and we made a Fantasy story ourselves that was about 2-3 pages long. Thirdly, we started going into a unit of Horror. We read horror stories, and then we started making our own horror stories that were about 4 or 5 pages long. Lastly, we went into a unit of Disney cultural Representations. We watched some Disney movies and talked about how bad Disney made them. We then made a Presentation about how we could improve the movie, what were the problems, what they did well, and the differences and similarities they had in the culture from real life VS the Movies.

This year in Drama with Mr. G, we did a lot of different things and we were working mostly in groups. Firstly, we did open scenes with a partner. Then we choose a scene from a movie, TV series or Youtube video. Lastly, we did a Horror unit where we made a movie with horror elements. We went to different places to film.

DDRAMA DRAMA RAMA

We did a lot of interesting and fun things this year with Mr.G in Lang and Lit. In the first unit, we read "Sisters" to inspire our comics that we created. Then in our second unit, we read " Artemis Fowl" and wrote very entertaining fantasy stories. After we read a collection of short horror stories, we then wrote scary, creepy, horror stories of our own. And finally our last unit, which was about cultural representations in Disney movies, we watched clips of Disney movies with terrible cultural representations and made presentations explaining the flaws with a lots of interesting facts.

We did a lot of fun things in Drama with Mr. G. First we did Open Scenes with 2 people in each group, creating a scene that needed us to create a place. Secondly, we did Duets, which was we had to create a scene that was from a video clip in a movie or TV Show. Lastly, we made horror movies with 2 or more people in each group and we tried to make it as scary as possible.

This year, we did four different units in Lang and with Mr.G: memoirs, raising awareness, mythology, a TED talks. We first did memoirs, where everyone wr about essential parts of their life and made it int story. The second unit we did was raising awaren about an environmental topic happening worldw and how we can solve that problem.

The third unit we did was about mythology, where we wrote about a chosen country's important gods, their story of the afterlife, and how they thought the world was made. Lastly, our fourth unit was making a TED Talk about a hobby or subject we are interested in, and then sharing it with the class. This was a very fun year in Lang and Lit, and we enjoyed it very much.

This year, we had 3 different terms in Drama: Duets, PSAs, and Monologues. In our first unit Duets, we grouped up into groups of 3-4, and had to choose a scene from a movie or TV show to recreate. In our second unit, we focused on PSAs, we were mostly in groups of two, and were in charge of choosing a global issues and then performing and directing a video that was at least 1 minute long to raise awareness about it.

In our final term, we did monologues. To help us, we were allowed to have someone on stage to help us so it didn't feel awkward talking to no one.

In general, this year's Drama was fun, and we appreciate all the effort Mr. G has put into our units and our success. We loved this year of Drama, and thank Mr. G for introducing us to all these opportunities.

MYP2A Drama

2B

Our units in L/L with Mr. G were memoirs, raising awareness, global mythology, and TED talks.

In our Raising Awareness unit, we raised awareness about environmental issues. We also read a book called "Hoot," which was about a boy who raised awareness about owls being threatened to be killed. We were doing this unit in Lang. & Lit. and drama.

For our TED Talks, we talked about something that we enjoyed outside of school, and also something that we could talk a lot about. We had to speak for three to seven minutes.

For the mythology unit. we had to create a presentation about a culture we were given. We had to talk about fun facts and gods and goddesses from that culture.

For our last unit in Drama with Mr. G, we learned monologues. We picked out our very own monologue from a huge selection that we felt emotionally attached to us. We started practising and having fun with friends and class mates all while learning. For our second unit, we worked in groups and made PSAs about environmental issues tying into our Lang. and Lit. unit. Our first unit was duets with a partner.

MYP 3A Language and Literature

This year in Language and Literature with Mr. G, we did a lot of fun stuff. We wrote autobiographies and we read the book "I am Malala" to help us write our own autobiographies.

We also read "The Giver" and then we wrote dystopian stories. Then we read and wrote different types of poems. Finally, we did debating. We were debating about should homework be optional or not.

This year in Drama with Mr G, we enhanced our acting skills and for some if not most people, we confronted our fears this year This year in drama we performed 3 times throughout the year in the P.A room to a live audience. We started the year by acting out dramatic scenes in pairs Ranging from scenes from IT to Teen Beach Movie our class rehearsed and performed for the first time in MYP3 In our second unit we wrote, rehearsed, and performed our own play that was based around the life of a Grandfather. We pulled inspiration for our play by taking pictures based around certain words and music We also were introduced to theater based process journals Our final and latest unit was performing monologues, but had a scene partner with us on stage We were challenged with faster deadlines performing essentially on our own and approaching a new type of on-stage performance.

DRAMA DRAMA

This year in Lang and Lit with Mr. G, we were doing many units. The first unit was Malala and her autobiographies. Then, we created our own autobiographies. Then we did dystopian stories based off of "The Giver." Then we did poetry based off of many different poems. We did our own poetry portfolio full of our own poems. Lastly, we did a mini unit on debating. We went against each other in small groups and debated the topic about if we should have the death penalty.

FOR DRAMA WITH MR G THIS YEAR, OUR FIRST UNIT WE HAD TO CHOOSE A SPECIFIC DRAMATIC SCENE FROM A MOVIE OR TV SHOW AND ACT IT OUT IN PAIRS. FOR OUR SECOND UNIT WE HAD TO MAKE A FROZEN IMAGE OUT OF DIFFERENT WORDS AND MUSIC, USING DIFFERENT EMOTIONS TO DESCRIBE IT, AND MAKE SURE WE WERE FROZEN FROM THERE, WE CREATED A MIDDLE AND END. WE THEN SHARED OUR IDEAS, AND COLLECTIVELY MADE A SCRIPT AND ASSIGNED PARTS. FOR OUR FINAL UNIT WE HAD TO CHOOSE MONOLOGUES AND MEMORIZE THEM WE HAD A VERY LIMITED AMOUNT OF TIME, WHICH IS WHY THIS UNIT WAS QUICK

MYP4 Language and Literature

Student comments:

In Langauge and Literature this year, we covered 2 fantastic literature texts. Maus was a graphic novel, based on the story of a holocaust survivor. The entire novel is presented symbolically, representing Jews as mice and Nazis as cats, showing the representation of power through symbolisation. The second book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time is a story written from the point of view of an autistic boy, named Christopher, who is trying to solve a murder mystery, but ends up diving into a lot of secrets. Throughout these texts, we have become more aware of our world, both past and current, which opened our eyes and allowed us to become better versions of ourselves.

Through this journey, we aim to cultivate expressive and engaging communication, enabling our students to view the world through a broader perspective.

Learning a language opens an additional window through which our students can connect with and explore the world. It provides them with endless possibilities for personal and intellectual growth. May this year grant them the opportunity to flourish and embrace the richness that lies ahead.

Language Day served as a testament to the dedication and passion our students have for both language acquisition and the exploration of diverse cultures. It was a truly memorable celebration, showcasing our collective linguistic achievements and reminding us of the transformative power of language to bridge cultural divides and foster profound connections. We wholeheartedly applaud the efforts of our students, their commitment to learning languages, and their eagerness to embrace the richness of different cultures. As we look ahead, we anticipate the exciting adventures and discoveries that await them, confident that their passion for languages and cultures will continue to shape their journeys in remarkable ways.

MYP Hungarian

At BBIS, we believe the value of learning one's mother tongue in enhancing communication skills and fostering a sense of cultural connection among native speakers. We believe that acquiring a strong command of the Hungarian language is essential for our students, as it empowers them to navigate and excel in both their present and future lives. Additionally, we believe that native speakers should have the opportunity to explore and celebrate their own culture, history, and traditions, enabling them to develop a deeper understanding of their identity.

To achieve these objectives, BBIS provides Hungarian native speakers with the opportunity to study Hungarian grammar, literature, and creative writing. Furthermore, for Year 6 and MYP students, we offer Hungarian history courses. While our lessons are based on the Hungarian national curriculum, we place a particular emphasis on developing the skills necessary for successful participation in future Hungarian literature studies within the IB Diploma Programme offered by our school.

During the current academic year, our Hungarian classes have focused on literature. Students have had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the classics of Hungarian literature, explore different literary representations, and delve into various literary genres. To facilitate their learning, we have incorporated practical and creative group assignments, which have proven to be highly engaging for our students. Group projects, theatre visits, and collaborative preparations for the March 15 Assembly have been particularly popular among our students. By showcasing Hungarian culture through classroom and school decorations, our students have been able to provide their non-Hungarian peers with a glimpse into the richness of Hungarian cultural heritage.

MYP – Hungarian

MYP 2 Individuals and Societies

In I&S, our units were:

1) globalisation. where we studied about globalisation and it's pros and cons.

2) Then we did natural environments, where we studied about natural environments and the impact we have on them.

3) Then it was power in early societies, learning about hierarchies of early civilizations and who had power in early civilizations.

4) Our last unit was culture and diversity where we studied about how different cultures impact our lives and thinking. We also looked at the salad pot theory and the melting pot theory and compared them, and we had to decide which was the better one in our opinion.

Ms. Himani was a really kind person and we are saddened to see her leave. We wish her the best of luck and we will all miss her.

What is I&S? Individuals and Societies is a subject that teaches us about our world.

This is done by the combination of historical, geographical, political, social, economic, and cultural factors. This year we’ve learnt about Origin Stories from different religions, a lot about the Big Bang, our solar system and space, analysing theories from scientists such as Alfred Wegener, and the theory of evolution and natural selection.

For our work this year we’ve mainly focused on comprehensive reading, and for our formative tasks we’ve gotten more creative, working on art and visual ways to express our ideas, while our summative assessments have been writing essays to improve our argumentative skills and to prepare us for tasks like this in our upcoming school years.

Our I&S teacher, Ms. Himani helped us throughout the year a lot in order to Understand ideas that were new to us and at first were challenging to us. We learned different ways of learning and learned different ways we can Take in information, such as for our essays that we write at the end of every unit.

MYP3 Individuals and Societies

MYP4 Individuals and Societies

MYP4 classes spent this year collecting knowledge about how our world became the one we live in today. Starting the year off with how colonisation dominated America and how it made or ruined entire communities. Looking at the impacts of exploration, both positive and negative, it was interesting to dive into the reality and history that shaped our understanding of the world.

We continued by looking at how disadvantaged communities stand up for themselves in the forms of revolutions. Looking at specific examples, we started understanding how these conflicts developed and what led to the events.

Remaining with the time period, we looked at The Industrial Revolution and the consequences this led to in the future. From global warming to child labour, we looked at everything that was introduced and tried out their effects during interactive activities. Overall, it was a knowledgeable year, focusing on humanity and how our actions may lead to devastating consequences in the future.

MY 5 Individuals and Societies

Do you want to learn about the world around you and understand the skills of geography, history, politics, societies, cultures and economics?

Then look no further than Individuals and Societies at BBIS!

The Individuals and societies department has been busy this year looking into global issues and learning about world issues around them.

The MYP individuals and societies students study under the humanities and social sciences. This subject group encourages learners to respect and understand the world around them, and equips them with the necessary skills to inquire into historical, geographical, political, social, economic, and

cultural factors that affect individuals, societies and environments. The study of individuals and societies helps you to critically appreciate the diversity of human culture, attitudes and beliefs.

What have we studied in MYP5?

MYP 5 this year learned about how our population has exploded rapidly due to globalisation, improvements in technology and immigration. We delved into topical issues like conflict over borders and development issues due to government control and colonisation.

Message from Miss O’Keeffe: Well done MYP5!

You have been a wonderful year group and I cannot wait to teach some of you discreet topics like Business or Economics next year. This year has been a wonderful year teaching you all and I have loved our lessons. We have had some really interesting classroom discussions and I have really enjoyed the interesting perspectives and reflective ideas you have all brought to the lessons. This was a busy year as we prepared for our E-Assessment but you took it in your stride. Well done for being organised and studious towards your exams. Your creativity as a year group didn’t go amiss as you created “shark tank presentations” to interesting (and realistic) podcasts to animations (Adelya) and super presentations. I am so impressed by you all and your talents.

Special shoutout to Mate and his world of geographic and historic facts throughout the year, Lilli’s amazing creative skills and the wonderful acting skills of Ash, Josh, Laura, Noa and Martina!

You have all been fantastic. Have the best summer and see you all in August

There is always something exciting happening in the Science labs at BBIS. In MYP 1 this year, students were fascinated to learn all about being a scientist, by using microscopes to look at cells, dropping eggs from the balcony and researching the life cycle of stars. Recently, the M1s have developed their teamwork and presentation skills. They have come along leaps and bounds as a year group of budding scientists.

MYP 2 students have been on a wild ride, from building roller coasters to taking a journey through the human digestive system. They also investigated the dirtiest surfaces in the school by observing mould growth on bread- yikes!

MYP Science

By far the highlight for MYP 3 students was the Body Systems unit, in which the class was able to get hands-on with heart and lung dissections. Even if they don’t remember all the anatomy, they will certainly remember those lessons for years to come!

The MYP3s also joined up with Ms. Warlop in Design for the IDU week- their creations show their joint understanding of a scientific topic and their design skills. We wish them best of luck in their Science options next year!

The MYP 4 and 5 students had the difficult but exciting decision to choose between studying Biology, Chemistry or Physics this year. In Biology, students learned about the different types of cells, and did a taste test experiment on each other to determine the relationship between sight, smell and taste. They also created family trees where they tracked genetic traits. The Chemists were challenged to perform advanced investigations such as acid-base titrations and redox reactions. In Physics, they dove into farreaching topics such as astrophysics and renewable energy sources. The MYP 5s had the added challenge of studying for their MYP eAssessments. Ms. Brunt, Mr. Fleming and Mr. Crawford are very proud of the whole cohort for completing their Science exams with such enthusiasm!

I am amazed at how much I have learned and grown over the past half year. Chemistry was a subject that initially intimidated me at the beginning, with its difficult concepts and units. However, under the guidance of our knowledgeable teacher Mr. Fleming, I gained more confidence and a deeper understanding of the subject. The class was structured in the way that it encouraged active participation and active learning.

We had numerous experiments, which not only solidified our theoretical knowledge but also increased our curiosity and critical thinking skills. The teacher helped us achieve a collaborative learning environment, encouraging us to work in groups and engage in discussions. These interactions allowed us to learn from our peers and develop our communication and teamwork skills. Mr. Fleming’s passion for the subject was contagious, making each lesson engaging and enjoyable even when I was falling asleep basically every second lesson. I appreciate how the class connected chemistry principles to real-life applications, demonstrating the importance of what we were learning.

It was very helpful being able to focus better on class when Mr. Fleming told this particular student to be quiet or else he would get a strike but in conclusion the whole class basically received more strikes than house points in the entire semester. Overall, this MYP4 chemistry class has not only expanded my scientific knowledge but also taught me valuable skills that extend beyond the classroom it helped me to achieve different levels of knowledge and understanding.

MYP1 Maths

Message from Mrs. Porritt

I have loved working with you this year! You have been so enthusiastic to learn Maths, solving problems, practising vocabulary, collaborating and applying your skills to real life problems. One of my favourite Units was 2D Shapes and Symmetry, where you designed snowflakes using a pair of compasses, and then had to record a video for your Summative Assessment analysing the symmetry you could see in Winter Decorations. Here is a shot of Jinwoo and the shapes he made at home:

Message from Jinwoo L.

I have loved learning mathematics with Ms. Porritt this year as well! She taught us about algebra, patterns, shapes, probability, factors, multiples etc. One of my favourite Units was algebra. For example, fractions, plus and minus and multiply and divide negative and positive numbers etc. Ms Porritt explained about those types of things really well, so we could understand it well. If our maths teacher wasn’t her, then it would be hard to learn. She tried to not make us get bored of maths, so sometimes, she created a challenge/quiz for us so we don’t get bored. I can still remember a challenge we had to solve the problems all over the 3rd floor of the school and it was about patterns. I hope Ms. Porritt teaches us forever!”

Message from Ethen N.

“I have loved working with Ms. Porrit was a brilliant teacher to work with because she was a teacher who taught us fun maths units like Algebra and etc. Ms. Porrit was a teacher who would always smile and greet us in lessons, and taught us Venn diagram, and The most unit that I enjoyed was the Pi because it was fun learning a new unit that I never learned and that the pi is pretty long.”

Message from Yiram P.

I have loved working with Mr Crawford and Mrs Porritt in Maths. We learned lots of topics such as algebra, probability, etc. They taught us really well so that the students could answer correctly. My favourite moment was when I was learning multiplying decimals, I was the only one who got the answer correct in the questions so I was happy. Also I loved working on Venn diagrams about probability when I had to put the correct quantitative answer on each circle. I also liked when she created hard and easy challenges and quizzes like Jinwoo said. My most favourite Unit on Maths was algebra(same as Jinwoo).

MYP 2 MATHS

We learned many new methods and mathematics this year with Mr. Crawford, Mrs. Porritt, and Mr. Human. We had lots of fun doing activities and classwork while learning new things. We learned algebra, calculations, and methods to help us improve our understanding of maths and develop new useful IB skills.

Message from Mrs. Porritt:

Well done MYP2, you have worked hard learning Maths and also demonstrating flexibility, resilience, and critical thinking as you worked with Mr. Crawford for the first two terms, and then online with Mr. Human for the Summer term.

You have learned about algebra, fractions, statistics, and geometry this year. You made some great posters (like the one to the left) to summarise your learning on fractions. You have been reflective and evaluated your own learningbelow is a screen shot of what you said to Mr. Human about online lessons in Geometry:

Message from Mrs Porritt:

Well done MYP3 for working so hard in Maths this year! You have learned to reflect on your own learning, be realistic about your own abilities and try new strategies for focussing, concentrating, persevering when things get difficult and collaborating with each other. You are ready now to move to different levels of Maths learning in MYP4- Standard Maths to consolidate your skills and improve your confidence, or Extended Maths for those of you who want a challenge!”

My favourite Unit this year was Mathematical Art, where I saw you learn about how Maths and Art can connect. You then expressed yourself by creating your own mathematical art. Here is Bodi’s work, based on his own Hungarian culture:

And here is Leo’s impressive digital art:

Message from Mrs Porritt:

“This was the year that Maths learning got harder! We started the year studying weird and wonderful mathematical symbols, which introduced you to challenging algebraic notation. We have also studied sequences and formulae, statistics, geometry and measurements. My favourite Unit was when we learned how important it is to apply your Maths skills to a real life problem, by measuring our school spaces and evaluating how suitable they are for someone using a wheelchair.”

Here is some thoughtful work from Sara:

MYP1 Visual Arts & Design

This year in Art lessons the students have created many interesting things. The students have used famous artwork to create different modern versions of the artwork. They also created a letter with Zentangle patterns inside and outside gaining the understanding of the zen effect. They learned a lot of exciting information about art movements and artists. All students did creative work and had a fabulous learning experience with drawing, painting, printing and sculpture.

This year in Design lessons we have had a lot of fun exploring and understanding design. With creating trailers for books and our own board games and worked on the city of the future with Tinkercad creating a 3-D model. The students all really enjoyed this year’s program in Design class and learned a lot of new skills and knowledge about design.

MYP2 Visual Arts

"This year, MYP2 has made so much progress with their artistic skills. We have discovered many styles and techniques to enhance our drawing abilities. During our time learning with Mr. Davidson, we have learned styles such as Zentangles and Vanitas. Both of these were relaxing and fun tasks because it gave us the freedom to draw our own themes with the new skills we learned such as drawing, shading to create realism and understanding famous artist’s work. We had a lot of fun doing these tasks and we can't wait to do this again next year."

MYP3 Visual Arts

This year in Art with Ms. Thomas and Mr. Davidson, We learned about the Colour theory and created Optical Illusions. We also visited Victor Vasarely Museum for Research and inspiration for our final piece. We created Zen tangles and they were very relaxing and fun and everyone enjoyed creating the work. We learned about different types of fonts and patterns of zen tangles. In the Zen tangles unit we had a choice between creating a letter or animal with Zen tangle patterns and my spider web looked great- By Jyoti S.

Miss. Warlop's Visual Art Class taught us a lot about how we should paint, about what subject we should paint, and how to paint those pictures in many different creative ways, and how to paint them. Also, during her class, she did a lot of creative and realistic activities such as taking us to museums, and it certainly impressed us. So we were able to concentrate on the class, and we were able to make the class cool and clear, what we needed to do. Thanks to this, we were able to unfold our imagination and help us express what we want to draw well.

MYP 4 Visual Arts

MYP2 Design

In design MYP2 students improved a lot on designing and thinking creatively. The projects we had throughout the year were designing a tiny house, creating a stop motion video and creating a digital escape room. In all of these projects all MYP2 students had fun with creative mind sets. The main focus of design was to make students use out of the box thinking skills. Although the projects were individual tasks, students worked collaboratively in helping each during the creating process. In design we had a lot of fun exploring a wide variety of materials with the design tasks.

MYP3 Design

Over the course of the year, we’ve done everything from making gifs to making games; This year has been full of very eventful units, and we’ve learned plenty of useful technological skills that we’ll definitely make great use of in the future. We also learned a lot about the creative process; developing ideas, and solving problems when they arise during each project. The BBIS Mascot unit was a lot of fun.

The microbit unit was my personal favourite, as I love coding, and making games, and it’s fun to learn how the programming language works.

MYP 4 Design

In the colourful realm of design class, our creativity sprouted wings and soared like mischievous hummingbirds. From sketching bizarre creatures to crafting mind-bending installations, we embarked on an adventurous journey through the wild landscapes of imagination. Like a pack of curious squirrels, we scurried around the class, seeking inspiration in every nook and cranny. Who could forget the epic glue gun battles or the joyous chaos of paint splatters that turned us into walking canvases? With scissors as our swords and pixels as our playground, we fearlessly conquered design challenges, leaving behind a trail of unforgettable memories and masterpieces that danced like fireflies in our hearts.

MYP1 Physical and Health Education

“We have had a great year in PHE. All students have worked extremely hard to transition into the MYP. Their conceptual understanding and ability to apply various skills and movement patterns have come a long way. They have experienced planning for performance through leadership and reflecting on their performance. We have looked at the Olympics, both ancient and modern-day, Nutrition and yoga, to name a few units. The fruity fitness bars stick out in my mind. Students learn about nutrition and then apply this by creating their own energy or protein bar. We have so many successful bars coming into school for a taste test. It was amazing. Thank you must go to the parents for buying the product. I look forward to seeing further progress next year.” Mr Wheatley

In PHE we always learn about really interesting and sometimes funny things. We learned how to do the fruity fitness bars and learned about calories. We also learned about bones and about their movements. We also learned about muscles and how they work. We also learned about sponsors and how much they earn or give. We created a presentation about sponsoring a footballer and giving her money and clothes to wear.

Here are some works, presentations and documents that worked on Physical health and education:

MYP2 PHE

In PHE, we have done a lot of different exciting activities. We had a sports day, where all of the Houses participated and were competing to get the most points. We have travelled to many places and played loads of matches with different schools. For example, we went to Austria for a volleyball match. It was very interesting and fun. Overall, PHE this year has been really great. All of us enjoyed it and wish all people in the PHE department an amazing Summer holiday.

Teacher's comment:

This year in MYP2, students have covered various topics to develop their wider understanding of Physical & Health Education. The students engaged in a Basic First Aid unit, Fitness and Training. In practical sports, students looked at Handball, Spikeball and Gymnastics. Developing these foundations will help the students explore these concepts further as they move into MYP3. But for now, I wish MYP2 all the best for summer and as they move into MYP3.

MYP4 PHE

Mr Wheatley

What a class this has been. I took them over in October due to a Timetable reshuffle. I couldn't have picked up a better group of students. We have a range of sporting passions. However, the passion for PHE is excellent. The discussions with Berci about various topics, mainly football, on the way to each venue have entertained Mr Bell and me. This year, we have studied a range of units, from Drugs in Sports, Leadership, Badminton, Skill Acquisition and Athletics through a Higher, faster, further unit. The students have adapted well to each concept and developed this conceptual understanding. With a small group of 10, it's always difficult to play large team games. The students excelled in the Badminton unit. It was a good leveller regarding ability, and the student's efforts were great. In terms of academic excellence, Berci and Sara led the pack. These two students were always diligent and worked incredibly hard, asking questions about accessing the higher levels. All the other students were excellent in different units. Gergo, Akos F and Julius in Leadership. Where the students were given a group of Y1,2 or 3 students to take for their PHE lesson. Seeing all the students entertain, enthuse, and teach our youngest students at BBIS was terrific. A special shout out to Akos K, Akos F and Alexa A for joining the group mid-way through and getting into the swing of the action. Good luck with the next stage as we transition to MYP5 and the E-Portflio assessment.“

Sara

I enjoyed the 2023 year’s PHE very much! We tried various sports, including tag rugby, badminton and athletics. Besides this, I would highlight the leadership unit we had close to the end of the year. This unit was quite different from the usual units we have in PHE. While learning about skill acquisition, we had the opportunity to learn how to lead actual PHE lessons like our outstanding teachers. We had lots of fun with these sessions.

MYP5 PHE

MYP5 Students this year had a focused and quick-moving year within PHE.

The students began the year with a theory topic of Performance Enhancing Drugs, including research tasks. They also worked practically on Netball, Tag Rugby and Gymnastics.

The main focus for the PHE students in MYP5 was the ePortfolio. The first cohort to undertake this process required students to take on the role of a coach, assess a client's ability and performance, to design and plan a training plan to develop their ability. The students worked incredibly hard on this task and produced some very high-quality portfolios.

I wish the MYP5 PHE class all the best as they move into the DP program and have high expectations of those students undertaking the Sport & Exercise Health Sciences course next year.

The MYP4 Drama Class, led by Mr. Walters, has been an incredibly positive and enriching experience for me. Under Mr. Walters' guidance and expertise, I have discovered a deep appreciation for the world of theatre and have grown both personally and creatively. One of the most remarkable aspects of Mr. Walters' teaching style is his ability to create a safe and inclusive space for everyone in the class. From the very beginning, he fostered an environment where we felt comfortable expressing ourselves and taking risks. This allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the world of acting, exploring a wide range of emotions and characters with confidence. Mr. Walters' support and encouragement have been instrumental in building our self-confidence and helping us overcome any reservations we may have had. Mr. Walters' passion for drama is truly contagious. His enthusiasm for the subject matter is evident in every lesson, and it has inspired us to approach each class with the same level of excitement and commitment. His knowledge and experience in the field of theatre are vast, and he consistently brings in relevant and engaging material to enhance our understanding and appreciation for different theatrical techniques, styles, and playwrights. His ability to make complex concepts accessible and relatable has truly deepened our understanding of the art form. Mr. Walters often used the phrase “Ask me at lunch time”, when the curious students asked silly questions during a lesson. Goodbye Mr Walters and thank you for making the drama lessons good!”

Welcome to the IB at BBIS!

What do we expect of you as you transition into DP from MYP?

★ Dedication

★ Willingness

★ Organisation

Bring these to your IB Diploma studies and everything else will follow!

The Diploma course is a challenging course for 16-19 year olds. You will study 6 academic subjects while leading a full, balanced life. With a strong commitment to learning in and beyond the classroom, the IB Diploma puts the student at the centre of their learning and builds skills, attitudes and knowledge in both traditional and twenty first century ways. Attitude “is more of an indicator of ability to earn the diploma than prior academic success”.

At BBIS we aim to develop the whole person through the attributes of the Learner Profile, the IB Diploma is engaging, inspiring and rewarding. It is an excellent preparation for universities and top jobs across the globe, and is widely supported to provide the best preparation for university and the world of work. Leading universities unanimously praise the IB and they are known to have a good work ethic, and have created excellent organisation skills for life after learning. Andreas Schleicher, Director for Education and skills at the OECD says, “The world no longer rewards people for what they know – Google knows everything – but for what they can do with what they know. Global education today needs to be much more about ways of thinking, involving creativity, critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making; about ways of working, including communication and collaboration.”

The IB World Community

For over 40 years the IB Diploma Programme has been the gold standard in international sixth form education remaining independent of governmental policies. It continues to grow, having developed programmes for students from three to 18, which are now delivered to nearly one million students across the world in some 4000 schools. As an MYP school BBIS is proud to be a part of the IB community and to “develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect”.

The curriculum

IB Diploma students study a programme with both breadth and depth. All IB pupils study six subjects: language and literature, mathematics, science, a humanities subject, a modern language and a creative arts subject. This supports the continuation of developing transferable skills and abilities, without asking students to drop subjects too soon, or specialise too early. Equally, for those students who already hold specific future ambitions, it offers some degree of flexibility to enable greater access to knowledge in key areas: opting to study an additional language, science or humanities subject instead of a creative arts subject, and the choice of which subjects to study at Higher Level.

The Core unites the 6 subject groups by challenging students to apply their knowledge and skills in new ways; both academic and practical.

● Students become independent learners through studying the Extended Essay (EE). This is a 4000-word Research Essay on a topic of their own choosing. Working alongside a supervisor, they manage their work, inquiry and presentation to an undergraduate level.

● Through Theory of Knowledge (TOK) students explore information in scientific, linguistic, mathematical and cultural contexts. They begin to stretch perspectives and challenge their preconceptions.

TOK exhibition 2023

IB students spend time outside the classroom environment through participating in the creativity, action and service programme(CAS). It is an opportunity to focus on their personal growth, meet challenges, develop skills and explore what it means to commit, persevere and take full responsibility as they transition out of school into the world. CAS supports them in finding their place to actively participate within the local and global community. This year at BBIS students have taken part in CAS volunteering for a Ukrainian refugee school, dance projects, a trip to TATA as well as much more. This has allowed students to gain a perspective into other lives and give back to the community.

Dear DP class of 2024, what a year it has been! I can’t believe that we are already more than halfway through one of the biggest years of your lives (I know, Anna L, I won’t forget… you are STILL tired!) First of all, congratulations on being the first full group to ever take the IB Diploma programme at BBIS! That in itself is a monumental achievement. I know you complain about having to be the first DP group but believe me there are great “famous firsts” who would disagree. Take Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953 who along with his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay, became the first men to climb Mt. Everest or Marie Curie who was the 1st and female ever to win two Nobel Prizes. Someone has to be first, and I think you are all doing a brilliant job at carving out the path for the students who will embark on this journey next year.

DP1 AO
Message from Miss O’Keeffe…

When I think of DP1 I think of a brilliant mix of individuals all with different talents, from Mike who is a dictionary of information on all things Economics and Maths, to Anna L who constantly shows me her creativity and knowledge, knows everything from dance to the Kardashians, to Alex who seems to know every capital city and flag in the world. Chan, who is one of the most driven individuals I have met and will most likely be a billionaire by the time I retire. Bogdan who has an eclectic passion for painting table top miniatures and Simon who quietly ponders and reads Freakonomics. Haeun, you have settled so well into the class and it is so lovely to be greeted by your smiling face every morning. Anna K, you are one of the most mature students I know and you will most certainly be a successful Business Boss in the future. Mintaras, I am sure we will see your name in soccer (sorry football) lights in the near future... don’t forget me! Leo, I know that you have a hidden basketball talent and that Oscar would love to compete against you next year. Iryna and Mike it has been lovely to see you step up out of your comfort zones and become some of our first students’ leaders. Arthur, thanks for making me laugh in the mornings even when I am grumpy and without caffeine to Jessi who seems to have the coolest sense of fashion in DP.

This year has been a busy one, we started the year off with the trip to Tata for the first CAS trip where you certainly learned the skill of keeping warm to the Sports day, Children in Need, volunteering for a Ukrainian school, Extended Essays, Internal Assessments, residential trip to Slovakia and Poland to sitting our first set of exams to everyday lessons of DP. You are all honing the skills of independent learning and reflection as you enter into DP2. My advice to you all is to grab every opportunity you can and learn to live in the moment. It will be the end of the Diploma before you know it! Enjoy the summer and take the time to relax (as well as write personal statements and IA’S)!

Class reflection:

Our message to the students next year is:

Be resilient, cultured, humble and unyielding. If you will not adopt those qualities, this will affect your learning and your life in a negative way later on the way. Seek recognition for your admirable deeds, but do not seek constant appreciation, for honesty and developed work ethics are their own rewards. Think critically, allocate your time to subjects strategically. Homework is mandatory, but if you feel like you can use that time for a better purpose, consider doing that.

Reflections and targets:

Throughout this academic year all of us experienced many changes in different areas. Coming into DP1 meant that we would experience new levels of academic pressure and responsibilities, which would require us to adapt quickly. Because of this over time many students adopted a professional attitude towards learning and balancing their responsibilities in and outside of school. As the first generation of students to go into DP in BBIS we must serve as an exemplar of what responsible and reliable students should be, this is evident by outstanding academic performance of the overwhelming majority of our students who maintained honesty, stability and respect towards learning by obtaining and developing qualities which are valued in BBIS.

Challenges:

We have spent countless hours studying, writing essays and IA’s staying up late revising for exams, having little to no time to actually enjoy this year and driving in the GoKart arena. These were only a portion of all the challenging activities we have encountered, however these challenges all helped shape us to who we truly are today. We would like to nominate Bogdan for facing the biggest challenge of all and having something to focus on next year; his driving skills.

House Points Battle:

Not everyone fought for house points as hard as Alex did. Alex’s exceptional and huge effort towards earning HPs really made him standout this year, but somehow, still didn’t appear on the leader board. There is always next year. Our class is hoping to achieve more house points than we got this year, because being the leader on the amount of points in your class, really makes you feel happy and proud of the work and effort you put in.

Shoutout to Ms. O’Keeffe who made sure that Alex gets enough house points, but somehow never reached Top 5 (lol).

DP Business Management

“Business opportunities are like buses, there’s always another one coming.” –

Message from Miss O’Keeffe:

Well, Business management students, I am so proud of you all! DP business management this year has been for me, a wonderful experience. It has been great to teach each one of you and see you all begin to master the skill of how to write effective business style answers and investigate real life business situations. I have relished seeing you build a curiosity around the subject as you learned about topics such as what a business is, what makes up a business, what an entrepreneur is and how marketing plays such a vital role in our daily lives. I certainly have some budding CEOs and Entrepreneurs in the class and I look forward to seeing what you all bring to the table in the future! Special shout out to our small business class who came to the graveyard shift every Wednesday to learn Business and eat snacks

Have a great summer and remember to keep an eye out for those Business concepts and links to the course whilst scrolling on Insta, exploring Budapest, traveling the world or making TikToks and BeReals.

Messages from the students:

“The BM itself provided me with valuable insights into the intricacies of managing businesses and the dynamic nature of the corporate world. However, what truly made it special were the moments of laughter and enjoyment that we shared as a small group of 4. Ms. O’Keeffe thinks she has an incredible sense of humor, sorry to break it to you… Looking back I realize that the great moments in BM not only added a touch of joy to our learning experience but also enhanced our overall engagement of the subject matter.“

Anna K.

I have settled into business management quite quickly, as I understand the basics and the way it works. While studying the subject, I have seen more and more business related objectives all around me, on the streets and stores. It has been useful and I am sure in the future as well, since I will most likely pursue a business career and study it at university as well. “

Leo T.

“I absolutely love business management! It excites and inspires me in countless ways. Thanks to our awesome teacher, Miss O’Keeffe, we had a lot of fun in class this year! She made learning enjoyable. One of the highlights was when we tried to build the tallest structure using spaghetti. We were lucky to have such a cool teacher who taught us important things and made sure we had a great time in class. ”

Business Management is one of my favorite subjects. It piqued my interest, which was not particularly interested in economics and business, and consequently made me want to study them in university!!! I am really grateful to Miss O’Keeffe ⸜ (*ˊᗜˋ*)⸝ I am especially thankful for the practical knowledge and real-world examples she incorporated into her lessons, which have given me valuable insights into the business world.”

Bogdan P.

“When I chose business management as one of my higher level subjects I had no expectations, mainly because I had no experience with this subject or anything similar before. This lack of expectations was one of the contributors to my further developed curiosity and willingness to engage with this subject. Ms. O’Keeffe’s presentation and ways of encouraging participation made the subject interesting and full of opportunities for open discussions on a regular basis, for that I am grateful.”

DP Economics

Lack of money is the root of all evil.

Message from Miss O’Keeffe:

Well done Econ students, you have shown great resilience in learning Economics this year. Well done for never giving up and for practising those graphs. I know they haven’t all been easy. Special shout out to Chan, Simon and Misha who have worked extremely hard this year and have discovered a great interest in Economics and to, Anna, Alex and Fabio who have mastered the knowledge and who have never given up even when they found content tough. You are all brilliant students and have made me super proud as a teacher and a homeroom tutor. I am excited to see what you can all achieve in DP2 and the knowledge you bring us back from University of Colombia Mikhaylo! Enjoy your summer and see you in term 1 of DP2!

Message from students:

“We learned what a demand is. I think that's a success”

Economics in DP is no joke. Our class went through blood, sweat and tears till we managed to understand economics. But we can finally say that, we have learned a lot and it was worth it! Economics is a tough subject, as it is heavily based on sometimes hard definitions, graphs and even more complicated calculations. Understanding graphs was a very unique experience in itself.

Sometimes it felt like we had to remember a set of random and same lines that made no sense at all, but when you think about it, they all make sense in real life. Internal assessment was a challenging test of our knowledge and our ability to practically apply the skills and understanding that we acquired in the lessons.

Chan:

I believe IB Economics gave me an opportunity to experience the unique IB system and the IA. Unlike other subjects, Economics requires a short Internal Assessment for the first year of IB. This feature helps to make a roadmap for overall IA plan for the next school year. Moreover, I believe learning Economics is useful skills in real-life situations. Thus, we as students can adapt knowledge often. However, memorising the precise definition of terminologies and the structure of IB requires a lot of effort. I didn’t familiarise with the DEEDE structure, and lost marks. From next school year, I’ll try to apply the correct structure.

DP1 Language Acquisition - German and Spanish

As we reflect upon the remarkable journey of DP1 Language Acquisition - German and Spanish, we celebrate the passion and dedication of our students in their pursuit of language mastery. In the realm of DP1 Spanish Ab initio, our courageous learners embarked on a thrilling linguistic adventure, immersing themselves in the beauty of the Spanish language and culture.

Despite being newcomers to the language, they approached their studies with enthusiasm and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Throughout the year, they explored the fundamentals of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills, laying a solid foundation for their linguistic journey. Through engaging classroom activities, interactive discussions, and cultural explorations, they developed a deep appreciation for the diverse and vibrant Spanish-speaking societies. Their determination to overcome challenges and embrace new horizons makes them true trailblazers of language acquisition. We celebrate their progress and eagerly anticipate their continued growth and success in their IB journey.

In the captivating world of DP1 German and Spanish Language B (SL), our students embark on a transformative linguistic journey. This program is designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of everyday texts in spoken, written, and recorded forms, reflecting the topics encountered in their daily lives. With a focus on German and Spanish, our students cultivate core linguistic skills such as listening, writing, reading, and speaking, while also enhancing their interactive language proficiency. They acquire the ability to engage in meaningful dialogues, respond to inquiries, and draw logical conclusions based on their language comprehension. Throughout the year, our students have showcased remarkable growth in their language skills, empowering them to communicate confidently and fluently in German and Spanish. As they continue to excel in DP1 German and Spanish Language B (SL), we eagerly anticipate their continued linguistic development and their ability to embrace the power of language in their lives and future endeavours.

In the HL Language B Diploma program, our students explore the depths of language and literature, igniting their passion for German and Spanish. With a focus on analytical skills, they delve into texts of greater complexity, transcending everyday topics. Through detailed responses, adapting language to various contexts, and articulating and defending viewpoints, our HL students refine their ability to engage critically with texts. Literary explorations transport them into captivating literary worlds, fostering not only advanced language proficiency but also critical thinking and cultural appreciation. Congratulations to our DP1 German and Spanish Language B (HL) students for their impressive growth, and may they continue to thrive as they delve deeper into the realms of language and literature, forever embracing the power of words.

DP Theatre

“Theatre has been a very refreshing lesson in my DP learning. Theatre has opened my creativity and deepened my interest in creative subjects. This lesson was something much different than usual DP lessons because the atmosphere of being a class of 3 or 2 (with Jessi) made it a very familial study and enjoyable to attend. In addition, we sometimes in the year were able to watch some enriching plays in the national theatre that contributed to our success in theatre. All these elements made us appreciate theatre and our teacher that was making his all he could to entertain us and make us fall in love with theatre. The passion Mr. Walters had for theatre and making us feel better was insane and we could feel it as students. Mr. Walters is the type of teacher that you see in movies or series and you are jealous that these teachers don't exist in real life, well, they do and Mr. Walters is one of them.

Why did I choose theatre? Well, very simply I had a teacher that I appreciated and wanted to spend more time with, so I chose theatre as a subject, also I liked acting and saw the opportunity to join the theatre program, it was a win-win situation that offered me what I was searching for. Indeed, it was not a mistake I made a great choice however the amount of work is incredible and I am a bit stressed for next year because there is still a lot to do still.

Mr. Walters was a very good teacher but as well a very good person and friend. He helped us in our struggles in DP and also made us feel safe when we were in his lessons. We could express clearly our ideas and feelings while we were complaining about the injustice that has happened during the year. So yeah I will be definitely sad that Mr. Walters is leaving but grateful that I could have a teacher like him for 2 years. The reasons why you are leaving are more than comprehensible and I wish you the best in BISB.

Thank you Mr. Walters for being my friend for these 2 years, you were my inspiration and a father figure for me.”

Secondary Student Leadership

A message from Mr Bell:

The secondary student council has made great strides in making a difference to the day to day running of the secondary school. The secondary student council have helped to organise major school events such as; International Languages Day, Children in Need and Students Day. Students feel they have a voice and representatives they can turn to for suggestions and ideas. Michelle and Chan are now leading most student council meetings with organised agendas and minutes. Michelle and Chan’s leadership and guidance is one of the main reasons why the student council is thriving. I hope they continue to come up with initiatives and ideas that will improve BBIS for the better moving forward to next year.

Mike, the school ambassador

It was a pleasure to represent this school as a student Ambassador. I am grateful to the student council who often supported me in implementing decisions and providing ideas for further improvement of this school. I also felt contributing every time I had to say a speech and deliver crucial information to the students. I feel like we are slowly making this school a better place and we will inevitably bring improvements as we keep coming up with ideas and implementing them.

Chan, the leader of upper school student council In this school year,

I had the wonderful opportunity to be part of the upper school student council thanks to Mrs. Porritt. Starting from the member to the leader, the council has developed my leadership, communication and creative skills. Whether it was collaborating with fellow council members, engaging with teachers and administrators, or addressing the concerns of my fellow students, I realized that clear and open communication was the key to success. Learning to listen actively, express myself articulately, and convey ideas effectively has been crucial in maintaining a harmonious and productive environment within the council. This year, the council devoted for various range of year level. For example, we’ve got permitted going out to get foods during break and lunch time for DP student, chosen a MYP4 representatives, given out more school prize for the end of year term, adjusted the air condition policies after students’ complaints, and organized. Farsang events. For the next school year, the student council will collaborate with the school ambassadors more actively to attain their promises.

Michelle the leader of the lower school student council

As the lower student council leader, I want to announce that it has been a pleasure to work with the lower school student council members. They have worked excellently throughout the year and they have all put their absolute best efforts into their works. I’m very glad to be given this opportunity to work with them and witness their work in progress. We have taken countless suggestions into account and set up different events to help the students relax or have fun. My proudest moment being in student council was when we organised the Children's day event practically all by ourselves. We came up with the idea and took action to complete this quickly and efficiently. All members have worked very hard on this event and the event itself was very successful. Almost all students and teachers have enjoyed this event we arranged. The teachers got to rest and the students could take charge and have fun, the event passed by fast as all sorts of games and lessons took place during that day. I find the lower student council members to be great caring and opened minded individuals. Their teamwork skills and communication throughout the year with different pupils have been exceptional and I’m very delighted to have them on my team. With their help, our school has become a better place where students can enjoy what they learn. Next year, I want to strive to be in the student council again so I can make our school a better place for staff and students. I want to take a leading position again and show what I can do to the shcool. I want to thank every member of the student council for all the hard work they have done this year and the efforts they put into their actions. Without their help, the student council wouldn’t have worked and I sincerely hope they have had a great time working in the student council.

In student council, we have collaborated together to put different events together including, children in need event, children’s day, teachers vs students quiz, bake sale for ukraine refugees and languages day.

A big thankyou to; Michelle Liao, Leonard Amedu, Matvei Prysiazhniuk, Miriam Bouzoraa, Zalan Koltay, Nicholas Yordanov. Srisai Sureshkannan, Victoria Helali, Chan Yeong Seo, Oscar Li, Anna VS, Mark Berenyi, Bercel Banki and Kata Kolnhofer for everything they have done this year and all the events they have organised. .

Secondary Residentials

MYP 4-DP1 Slovakia and Poland

Students began the week travelling to Slovakia where they stayed in a picturesque Penzion next to the High Tatra Mountains. The week was jam packed with activities from visiting an important time in history at Auschwitz to rafting down a river that divided Slovakia and Poland. Students challenged themselves this week as they hiked up to a viewpoint in Zdiar and took a thrill seeking slide down afterwards. They also relaxed at a local waterpark and took some time to decompress after a busy year full of the usual academic demands of upper school students. The group were given an opportunity to discover Zakopane and buy local produce as a memento of their trip from cheeses to chopping boards and in the evening they enjoyed a delightful campfire, marshmallows and card games where the students had great fun trying to beat each other and the teachers at Kemps and Mafia. Finally, the week ended with the students favourite event where again they had a thrill seeking experience of GoKarting where Sasha, Akos and Berci competed for the fastest lap! Well done students, it was a great trip and your teachers were extremely impressed with you all!

Thailand Trip

In May this year, the MYP 4, 5 and DP students travelled to the Phang Nga region of Thailand to participate in green sea turtle conservation. They had the opportunity to care for baby turtles, sleep in a floating hotel, go bamboo rafting and eat endless amounts of Thai food. The focus of the week was on ethical tourism, Thai culture and adventure.

FOOTBALL BASKETBALL VOLLEYBALL

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

-SRISAI

ON SEPTEMBER 29TH, 2022, OUR SCHOOL PARTICIPATED IN A CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING RACE IN AISB. WE SPENT ALMOST THE ENTIRE DAY THERE, AND WE HAD LOTS OF FUN. BY THE END, WE HAD NO ENERGY, BECAUSE IT WAS A 6 KM LONG RUN, WHICH WAS NEXT TO THE COUNTRYSIDE, WITH A BUMPY AND HARD LANDSCAPE. MR WHEATLEY WAS OUR COACH THERE, AND HE WAS SO PROUD AND POSITIVE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE COMPETITION, EVEN THOUGH WE DID NOT ACHIEVE A HIGHER POSITION. OVERALL THE COMPETITION WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE, AND AFTER THE RACE WE TALKED ABOUT HOW WE SHOULD IMPROVE OUR TACTICS AND SKILLS FOR NEXT TIME.

THIS YEAR WAS FULL OF COMPETITIVE SPORTS. THERE WERE A LOT OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN BOTH BASKETBALL AND VOLLEYBALL THIS YEAR. WE DEFINITELY HAD OUR UPS AND DOWNS AS WELL. HOWEVER, THANKS TO THE AMAZING PLAYERS, TEAM CAPTAINS AND OUR COACHES, THE TEAMS ALWAYS STUCK TOGETHER AND NEVER GAVE UP. CERTAIN PLAYERS ENCOURAGED OTHERS TO KEEP GOING AND EVEN TO TRY OUT FOR THE TEAM TO STEP OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE. DESPITE THIS, THERE WAS NOTHING LIKE THE FEELING OF VICTORY AFTER A TOUGH FIGHT. WE HAD SOME AMAZING RESULTS AS A TEAM, ESPECIALLY IN HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL. WE CAME IN SECOND IN THE DVAC TOURNAMENT, AND FIRST IN THE FINAL COMPETITIVE VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT. TRULY AMAZING ACHIEVEMENTS FROM OUR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM THIS YEAR!

Duke of Edinburgh International Award at BBIS

What an amazing introduction to the Duke of Edinburgh International Award that BBIS has had, The hard work has paid off and the school is now an IAC - with hopes that next academic year we may even have a Gold Group! So far we have over 50 students taking part in the DofE Award, with next year taking on a further 38 students! Next year, we look forward to sharing with parents and staff the achievements of the first Bronze and Silver groups.

From a DofE Student perspective:

‘’The Duke of Edinburgh was very progressive and fun at the same time. Our team, Silver Seven made incredible progress by everyone starting their own award including: volunteering, skill and physical development. As part of our training, we have had three trips since the start of the year. These were to Hármashatárhegy, Margit-Sziget and Normafa. Each trip was challenging but got easier every time we went on a trip. We usually laughed our way through our struggles, like building a tent even though we never have before, and walking 15km with heavy backpacks on our backs. We always found a way to make it fun despite these difficulties. Overall, this was an enjoyable and definitely memorable year!’’

We started doing rehearsals two times a week for this show in September. We practiced and rehearsed for five months and then we finally presented to the school-- with 200 audience members for 4 shows! We had two main casts and a chorus. The main characters were Nicholas, Genevieve, Matthew and Bessie. We had chorus like the gods of memories and the Dragons. The story of this play was about a boy who goes to spend the summer with his grandparents but his grandpa is feeling unwell. Nicholas and his grandpa Matthew, spend a wonderful time in the summer and Nicholas kills a dragon so he can save his grandpa from dying. It was a lot of hard work, but it paid off because we had a lot of great reviews!

Message from Mr G: It has been an absolute dream work ng with you al to create 2 shows this year Super stressful Super time consuming But worth every second to see each and every one of you eave your comfort zones trust in the process, and perform in some of the strongest work I've ever seen from my students I hope I gave you the passion for acting that I myself a so found in middle school, and I hope you found your place where you can a ways be yourself and shine bright. I don't know what the future of the drama department is. But I do know that you are al such talented performers that no matter what happens you have a bright future ahead of you So, positive vibes only s ay the dragons in your lives, and ALWAYS reach for the stars BREAK A LEG in all your future shows And know that Ill always be n the audience cheering you on and believing in your ab lities

To our audience crew, and other supporters-- Thank you You made this year special with packing our Performing Arts Space full each time we performed Theatre cannot exist without an audience or a tech crew and your support made this year incredible and meant so much to myse f as well as the students.

For our second drama production with Mr. G, we were preparing a show to perform at the American Corner at the 13th annual Veszprém Drama Fest. We wrote a short, 20-minute show about a middle school drama play falling into chaos. It also included showing how mental illness and neurodivergency are normal, and shows us what some people have to deal with every day. We drove to Veszprém on a Friday, and had a really fun day and performed our show in front of a large audience on a huge stage. We got some really valuable feedback after the show, and I think I speak for everyone when I say we all really enjoyed this trip. Thank you Mr. G for the experience.

Events of the PFA

BBIS Parents and Friends Association (PFA) had a very productive year. We started the year with a coffee morning where we introduced ourselves and recruited some new active members. We organized two uniform swaps where parents had the opportunity to buy used uniforms for their children. As for entertainment, we organized the Mom’s dinner in September, the family picnic in October and the fun quiz night in November.

No doubt, the highlight of the year was the International Food Festival in March for which we prepared more than 50 dishes out of 16 countries.

We are really excited about next year, we have new plans, new ideas and will try to create an even wider range of activities for parents and families.

If you are interested in joining in the new school year, we meet on the first Friday of the month from September at the school cafeteria after drop-off.

See you around at our events.
