English as an Additional Language (EAL
All boarders need a minimum English Language qualification of a 6/B in GCSE English as First Language GCSE or a Level 7 in IELTS. Students, who have either of these qualifications, will need to show evidence of their grade upon arrival at Berkhamsted School. In addition, all new boarders will be interviewed by an EAL teacher at school to confirm their level of spoken and written English.
Most UK universities require a Level 7 in IELTS as part of their entry requirements. However, it should be noted that some universities require a higher level and students should check the English Language requirements carefully when they make their UCAS application.
The school provides EAL lessons for those who identified as needing IELTS tuition and English language support at no cost to the student. The lessons take place on two weekday evenings after supper and on a Saturday morning. Students who are identified as needing to attend these lessons must attend a minimum of one weekday evening lesson and the session on Saturday morning.
The SEN department also offers further support for those students who require more help in improving the standard of their English.
When a student has passed the IELTS examination at a Level 7 and has been interviewed by an EAL teacher to confirm that their level of English is sufficient, the student may then stop attending the weekly IELTS lessons.
