BOARDERS INFORMATION - COVID-19

Arrangements for Berkhamsted Boarding from September 2020

The School is implementing the government guidelines for reopening schools and taking steps to reduce risk and to safeguard the students. The arrangements below which are specific to boarding should be read in conjunction with the School’s Guide to Reopening (www.berkhamsted.com/return-to-school-guidelinesseptmber-2020) and this boarding handbook.

The School has followed government guidelines for the reopening of Schools and have taken the following steps to minimise risk in the boarding houses:

Please note that if students break the school’s or the government’s rules whether it is whilst at school or outside of school, or whether it is during term time or the holidays, they may be excluded from school to self-isolate for 14 days to protect the community. This would require students to spend two weeks with their guardians. This will be non-negotiable. Guardians or Parents would be expected to make arrangements for the student to be picked up as soon as possible and without fail on the same day that they are excluded to minimise the risk.

Face Masks • Students must wear face masks in public, indoor areas. A student’s classroom and the boarding house are exceptions although students may still wear face masks in these areas.

Visitors to the boarding houses • Flexi-boarding has been discontinued until further notice. • No visitors (including parents and guardians) are allowed in the boarding houses. • Weekly boarding will still be offered. Weekly boarders should note the expectations regarding adherence to the government’s rules on social distancing (which apply to all students whilst at school or outside of school) and the possible consequences of breaking them.

Social distancing and dining Students will be in a year group bubble and a separate boarding house household and may not have contact with any other students in the school. This means that: • Students from St John’s House (for girls) may not enter Incents House (for boys) and vice versa. • Students will eat breakfast and dinner with other students from their own boarding household and will not be able to sit at the same dining tables as students from the other boarding household. • Students must wash their hands before eating. • Students must adhere to the government’s rule on social distancing (www.gov.uk/government/publications/staying-alert-and-safe-social-distancing/staying-alert-and-safe-sociial-distancing-after-4-july ) when they are not in school. This applies to the holidays as well. • Students will remain socially distant (2m) from members of staff wherever possible.

Hygiene and cleaning Students will be required to clean their hands on arrival at the boarding house and at the school campuses. The boarding houses will be cleaned every day. Students will be taught how to wipe down communal areas after use and provided with anti-viral wipes to do this. We place a strong emphasis on collective responsibility for the health of boarders.

Leave from the boarding houses • Parents / Guardians may request permission for leave at weekends in order to go on an outing (for example to London) or to stay at a friend/relative/guardian’s house. If permission is granted, students must adhere to the government’s rules on social distancing. People from only two households can spend time together inside a home. • Students may occasionally request permission to eat in a local restaurant but can only do so in groups of no more than 4 students. The students must be from the same boarding household.

Travel, Quarantine, Track and Trace • Students must comply with the government’s track and trace system – details can be found at www.gov. uk/guidance/nhs-test-and-trace-how-it-works • All students must adhere to the government’s rules on self-isolation and quarantine after travelling from abroad. Details can be found at www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-travel-corridors • All students must adhere to any local lockdowns imposed by the government – this may affect a student who has visited a guardian/relative/friend at a weekend or during the holidays. • The School reserves the right to make changes to these rules in order to keep the students and staff safe. Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep the boarding community safe.
