FINLAY NOBLE 4

Welcome to issue three of our Monthly Magazine for season 2023-24 and I hope all our readers are well. Starting at the end of the month rather than the start, it was disappointing to lose out in extra time to Bonnyrigg Rose in the Scottish Cup. Personally, I don’t have any complaints and we gave it our all in very difficult conditions. It doesn’t seem to matter when we play nowadays there is a howling gale. Surely that can’t all be the fault of farting coos. Maybe Greta will have a view. The referee we had in the Bonnyrigg game I thought was very good, I know some folk will disagree with that, but I don’t think he got too much wrong. As I say, others will disagree, and I will concede that not every “south” referee that comes up here is exceptional.

People constantly complain about our match officials but then when some come from the south we complain even more. It is the same when the national team plays, and our domestic clubs play in Europe; the officials are always awful, they get conned by all the cheating and we don’t get anything blah blah. Maybe if that is truly the case then we should be giving our own match officials the benefit of the doubt and be happy with what we have. I don’t think the officials we have are bad, I never have. That doesn’t mean I don’t complain about some decisions but on the whole I think our officials do a decent job, and it certainly isn’t a job many folk are rushing to do. I am fortunate to know most of the officials and they are thoroughly decent folk that want to be involved in the game we all love. The ones in the

Aberdeenshire area all start becoming familiar to us at the club in the U18’s League matches and we see them on their journey into the Highland League. And I do mean it when I say that they are all genuinely decent individuals. They are perfectly aware of the passion involved in football and will be ready for all the shouts and criticism, they would have known that before they took it up, but there is no room whatsoever for personal abuse of any description. I learned the other week of an incident, in Scotland, where a young teenage referee had to travel home in his match kit because the players in the losing U14 team had spat all over his dress clothes in the dressing room when he was warming down. There is no way that not one coach or parent wasn’t aware of that happening. The upshot was that the kid didn’t continue with his refereeing career. I find that disgusting on so many levels but more so that it happened in our country and some adults pretty much condoned it. The past few months have been crazy regarding our fixtures, where we have only played four Saturday home games in 12 weeks. We now face a further seven Saturdays until our next home game. That is proving hugely difficult financially where there is no income but still an outlay for wages and travelling and associated costs. It isn’t anyone’s fault; it is just the way things have panned out with cup ties where we have been away in five out of six draws and

some of these have replaced home league fixtures. But that’s fitba and we just need to get on with it, irrespective of how worrying it is when the bank balance is dropping rapidly! If the remaining home games for 2023 are played, we will have played eight games where income is taken. Last season we played 19 such games. We also lost our grip on the Aberdeenshire Shield with a penalty defeat at Pittodrie against a team that had eight players in their side with first team experience. It was a great experience for everyone to be at Pittodrie and it is the first time we have played there since 1992. Scott Barbour scored one of the best goals of his career and Willie West played his 650th game for the club that night. That’s memories that can’t be bought, not only for Scott and Willie but for their family members. And they got to do it in a Broch shirt. We don’t have much in the way of home games in November, as touched on earlier, but we do have the SFA Youth Cup match here at Bellslea on Sunday 12th November against Stirling Albion. The winners have a home tie with Rangers, also this month, so plenty incentive for the lads. Please come along and give them your support. Come awa the Broch Finlay

THE MANAGER

MARK COWIE 8

October didn’t really start great for us. On the back of a great semi final win against Brechin we had a couple of very difficult fixtures with Formartine United at home and then Huntly away, both of whom had started their campaigns well. We approached the Formartine game full of confidence after our 2-1 win at Brechin, however in the first half despite having the majority of play, we made a couple of big mistakes in our own box which cost us a couple of goals. Formartine are a very good side who can cause problems without us helping them with their cause. In the second half we bombarded their goal but couldn’t really create much openings. A mix of resolute defending by them and us not making the right decisions meant that we would go on to lose the game. I was disappointed with the result but not so much the performance. We then went to Huntly where we had a few tired bodies, as well as missing Paul Young and Bryan Hay. This game was tough at the best of times but on the back of a midweek game along with missing two of your main players, it was going to be even more difficult. The first half saw us control everything. We scored a great team goal and should had had at least a couple others. We should have been awarded a penalty also, as we should have against Formartine, however we weren’t getting the decisions which can happen now and again when you are looking for a break. The second half started in the same fashion with us

controlling things. Then a mad 10 minutes turned the game on its head. We lost a soft goal at a corner and you could sense the momentum shift. We lost another two goals which saw us 3-1 down despite having had the better of the game. We pushed to try and get the second which would get us back in the game, but were caught on the counter which ended up in us conceding a fourth. Not the greatest day of my time at this club but one we had to learn from and quickly as next up was a trip to Pittodrie to face Aberdeen in the shield. I was down after the Huntly game but had to remind myself that these things happen to us all. It wasn’t long ago we beat Brechin on their own patch which not many teams have managed, so we do not turn a bad side overnight. We were just going through a tricky spell where we weren’t getting much breaks in all departments. Going in to the Aberdeen game was a great experience for us all. The way things worked out with it being an absolute international break meant Aberdeen were keen to play the game on Pittodrie and use a mix of their squad and young players in the game. Their team was filled with first team players in MacDonald, Williams, Gueye to name a few. I couldn’t have been any prouder of the squad, everyone of them. We went toe to toe with them on their own park and were ultimately unlucky not to win, as yet again a big decision went against us where a perfectly good Willie West goal was incorrectly adjudged to have been offside. If

only VAR was working this time - then again maybe not with the way things are around VAR at the moment. We took a 1-0 lead with arguably the best goal Pittodrie has seen at all this season. A goal that if even needed, reminded everyone the capabilities of Scott Barbour. One he will truly remember for the rest of his days. They managed to get 1-1 and we saw out the rest of the half. Second half and again we managed to be disciplined and restrict them to very little, yet we were causing countless problems going forward, particularly Fig and Ryan Sargent. We scored another good goal when Sean Butcher put Sargent through who put the ball in for the rebound after his first effort had hit the post. We were exuberant however Aberdeen pegged us back immediately. At the ending of the 90 minutes it finished 2-2 so it would be decided with penalties which turned out to be one of the few aspects of the night where Aberdeen were better than us. They converted all apart from one penalty, of which all of the ones which went in were top quality. We missed a couple which meant we lost and were out of the competition. A great effort but ultimately we were out and would be giving up the shield this year to a new winning team. We couldn’t relax or try and recover fully as we had a league game against Turriff at the weekend, one of which if I am honest I was anxious with. We were at a stage where our fitness levels were dropping due to the games we had ahead over the last couple of weeks. Turriff were well rested and on the back of a 4-2 win at Formartine so I had to try and work some magic with the group. We changed personnel a bit and won the game convincingly 3-0. We were in total control and moved the ball well. Really pleasing as I had to take Ryan Sargent off at half time and then Greg Buchan shortly after as they had used up all of their reserves. Turriff had a couple of chances but nothing significant. They had just lost their manager previously which may not have helped however we were professional and got the job down and a welcome 3 points which had been missing of late. A couple of weeks rest followed due to the Brora game going off. This was well received to allow us to recharge with a big Scottish Cup tie coming up to finish October.

We did our homework on Bonnyrigg Rose and found that although new playing personnel were in, their set up and manner was very similar to that of our last meeting. The weather wasn’t great and had an impact on the game. We had the wind in our backs first half but didn’t really force the issue as much as I wanted. We had a lot of the ball but mostly in front of them rather than near their goals. We lost a cheap goal in the second half after a culmination of errors. The end finish was a good one and right in the top corner but we should really have dealt with the build up much better than we did. Ryan Cowie scored a free kick in stoppage time which was deserved. Extra time next and again we lost a goal which was preventable. We pushed for the remaining minutes and created a couple of good chances but none went on which meant we were knocked out of the Scottish Cup. Disappointing to be out and like the Aberdeen game we will get plaudits for our effort but ultimately we are out and will have to wait until next year to try again. So, a real mixed bag of a month. Started poorly but had some good moments. The best bit of news to come out of October was that we quickly managed to agree new long term contracts with some players which saw them commit again and hopefully be part of some more exiting times at this club in the future.

THE CAPTAIN

WILLIE WEST 12

October has been rollercoaster month for the group win some special moments but also ones to forget… However, before we get to October the team delivered our performance of the season thus far against league favourites Brechin. From the tactics to the individual performances from the team, we were spot on. It was clear that Brechin have some talented players but the squad worked their socks off and limited Brechin of much opportunities. Sarge and Fig up front also caused no end of problems to the Brechin backline and we were able to come away with a 2-1 victory and cement our place in the Highland League Cup Final. Our first game at Home in October to Formartine we came into full of confidence on the back of the Brechin result but unfortunately lost 2-1 under the lights which I don’t think was a fair reflection of the game but Formartine took their chances and defended well.

Next up and another bad defeat to Huntly 4-1 who have started the season off very well. The goal we scored was very well worked with Ryan Sargent finishing off a move that involved nearly the whole team playing out from Joe Barbour. But we were soft in the 2nd half and lost 4 goals. It was a strange game as again it didn’t feel that they played any better than us but were better in both boxes, something James Duthie constantly reminds us the importance of. The good thing about October was that there was no lack of games and we had an opportunity to redeem ourselves following the last 2 defeats. Next up was a rare visit to Pittodrie to play against a full-time Aberdeen XI which included many players very close to their first 11. It was an incredible experience to participate in for the whole group and one where everyone made a good account of themselves. The park is probably the best I have ever played on and walking out the

tunnel to the Richard Donald stand on your left is quite special. The goal from Scott Barbour was a beauty and I couldn’t believe how wide he was when he struck it but was delighted for him as I was for Ryan Sargent for his goal who impressed over the 90 minutes. Unfortunately, it was to be decided on penalties which was a stretch too far for us. A league game against Turriff was next on the cards and one where we had to tread carefully with their manager departing to join a new club. You are always unsure of the reaction of teams with new/interim managers but previously they had given us some very difficult games at the Bellslea over the years beating us last season and drawing the season before. Fortunately, we were able to win convincingly 3-0 and get the ball down and play some good football. I was particularly pleased for Aidan Sopel on getting his first goal, think I celebrated more than he did but it

was a great touch and finish from him! Scottish Cup next and our familiar opponents Bonnyrigg again. Unfortunately, another defeat in a game where I felt we were the better team (maybe I’m biased). They have done very well in league 2 since joining and I am sure the performance we put in will give us confidence in any future games against League 2 opposition. November doesn’t get any easier with three tricky away games against Banks of Dee, Brechin and Rothes but will be very important if we are to get ourselves in a position to challenge the league leaders. We also have The Ryan Cowie’s Testimonial Dinner and a chance for the group to celebrate Ryan’s dedication and fantastic career thus far! Willie

THE HEAD OF YOUTH

MATTHEW WEST 14

I must start by commenting on a game many of our youth players watched from the terraces as the 1st team put on a remarkable display at Pittodrie. I dont think I have seen the team play so well before. We saw in abundance discipline, experience but most importantly the quality of the team. For our youths - the heirs of these guys - I hope this will encourage them to continue to progress and develop with us and be part of such games in the future. It was good to get out and watch some of our loan players. Dylan Robertson, Joshua Hawkins and Callum Kelly are playing under

former captain and Broch Legend Ryan Christie at Maud Juniors. These guys have showed up well with development and increased maturity is evident. Our U18s ran out 2-0 winners on Monday 9th against Turriff. A good performance on the night and most importantly a clean sheet which we are all really happy with. A break in fixtures for our U18s, in line with the tattie holidays, has meant its been a quieter month in terms of games. But to the lads credit training’s been great with the guys constantly showing good standards, despite a number of tough nights recently with adverse weather. Its also been great to have a number of the guys from

JULY 1990

LIGHTS UP FOR BROCH'S LOCAL LIONS!

It's 52 years since Fraserburgh's last Highland League title triumph, and 14 years since, after leading, they were dramatically beaten by Nairn County in a championship playoff. But Broch are anything but a spent force - and face the new season with greater optimism than at any time in the past decade. A £15,000 new floodlight system to UEFA standards - is being completed at a cost of only £3,500, a youth team is being set up, and

their talented young team is being acclaimed as one of the most attractive in North football. Little wonder that Broch fans, long some of the most noisy and faithful in the league, have a spring in their step... It's a far cry from 1982 when Fraserburgh stunned the league by announcing that, due to a financial crisis, they were releasing all their Aberdeen-based players, who at that time made up two-thirds of their side.

Jimmy Adams, local businessman and popular club chairman for the past 12 years, recalls: "We had to cut our outgoings or face going to the wall. But cutting our Aberdeen link has been a blessing in disguise. "We don't have any 'prima donnas' anymore. We've got an excellent pool of good, local players who want to pull on a Black and White jersey. There's talent on the doorstep - and we're using it to good effect." The man recruiting and shaping these Bellslea Babes is Charlie Duncan, now 41, who began a glittering Highland League career and won all the top honours with Inverness Thistle. Charlie, who actually began his playing career with Broch's great Buchan rivals Peterhead, has again signed himself as a stand-by for the new season. Duncan took over four years ago and chairman Adams says: "He's the best manager we've ever had. He's done a fantastic job. It's easy to be a manager of some Highland League clubs where you can buy all and sundry, but Charlie has put together a team of genuine potential, without buying.

come to £15,000. But thanks to being donated lights and pylons by BP from St Fergus, and various sponsors and local volunteers, they have been able to do the job for £3,500. Negotiations are going on for rebuilding of two new gables on the grandstand, and it is hoped next year, with Football Trust help, to turn space at the south end of the ground into a training area for the new youth squad being run by George Malley and Brian Newlands. "Our finances are very good indeed, we've regular sponsorship, and I have to mention our excellent, hard working committee", says Jim. Broch's two title successes were 1933 and 1938, but they had a good side in the mid-70s, winning the Bells' Scotch Cup and the Aberdeenshire Cup and coming so close in the title playoff. Players like Charlie and Gavin Gray, Brian Newlands and Dave MacKenzie figure in the fine spell. The team showed up very encouragingly last season. But manager Duncan has his feet firmly on the ground. "Potential is nothing, unless you eventually deliver", he emphasises.

"Our job as a committee has been to be patient - and let Charlie get on with it. But it would be wonderful to see a trophy at Bellslea - for the manager and the players richly deserve to win something."

"Young players can be excellent some days, and terrible on other days. Getting consistency is the problem with inexperience, but i do feel we're making progress.

Broch took tenders for new floodlights and the bill would have

"My priority has been to get a bit of self-respect back at Bellslea. It was

a bit of a shambles, but the fans have been very good and we've got things turned around. "I have a lot of good youngsters who are just not quite ready yet for the first team. But I'm more convinced than ever that we should persevere with local talent. I've seen a bit of the Aberdeen juniors lately - so they have a really bad standard at present. "All the good players are 27 and 28 and ex-Highland League, and they're picking up a lot of money. I'm simply not prepared to sign lads like these. Broch have depended heavily on Dave Robertson to score their goals since Rex Hunter's heyday. Dave is now 31, and Charlie is looking for more goals from his younger lads this season. "Paul Keith is only 19 and missed part of last season with injury - but he can score goals against lesser sides, including four against Clach. But I'm looking for him to do better against the better teams", he explains. "Ronald Smith is 21 and as fast as Caley's Wilson Robertson - but he can't finish. His pace gets him plenty of chances but he misses two-thirds of them. Improving that ratio would make a difference." Mike McCafferty and John Thomson are two fine, skilful players who are not natural goalscorers. The manager has high hopes of 17-year-old recruit Andrew Lavelle from Formartine

United - "he won't be sitting in the stand" - and looks for development from Simon Sim, 19-year-old leftsided player and Keith McCreadie, also 19, whom Charlie labels "the best young player in the league in the latter part of last season." Injury and unavailability of players like Doug Ellis, Brian Sim and Alan Thomson dogged Broch last term and Duncan admits: "If we had 13 fully fit players for most of the games, then we'd given them a run for their money." What he lacks most, he confesses, if a leader on the pitch. "These boys are just learning - we need a couple of players who've done it all", he explains. "Someone like myself ten years ago would have been ideal. I honestly think young McCreadie could become that leader - he's a strapping six-footer, good in the air, powerful in the tackle, and it will be interesting to see home far he's come on this time." Detemination and skill were Charlie's hallmark as a player, and he's injecting them into his Fraserburgh team. The Broch have always been one of football's hotbeds but for too long those super-enthusiasts have not had a great deal to shout about. On or off the field, however, progress in being made. Fraserburgh are on the way back.

COMMERCIAL CORNER

GEORGE THOM 20

Welcome to our first update on what’s going on behind the scenes on the non-playing side of our Club. Running a football Club has many different operational and financial needs, and the Board are focussed, commercially, on generating income in four keys areas of our Club: 1. To keep enhancing the “Match Day” experience, comfort and safety of our fans at Bellslea Park, and to continue to meet SFA requirements on ground regulations.

Last Month we launched our new Commercial Brochure to highlight the many ways our fans and businesses can support us financially, including Advertising, Sponsorship and The Broch Lottery. Our brochure can be viewed here: https://www.thebroch.online/sipg/1042

A Commercial update will now be a feature of our “Bellslea Bulletin”, and in this Month’s Magazine we will focus on two areas.

NEW LED Lighting

2. To continue to invest in our Youth set up, that has been, and will continue to be, the foundation of our Club.

We are delighted to share that New LED floodlights will be installed week commencing 13 November.

3. To provide funds to invest and re-invest in our player pool, and to support Mark and James to continue to bring trophies to “Bellslea”.

Our existing floodlights were acquired from Ross County in 2005, and this project represents a major investment for our Club, which will not only make a big annual saving in energy costs, but also improve safety and enhance the experience for both our fans and players in our evening games and matches over the winter period.

MATCH ACTION

October sees the Broch in action across three competions as the Highland League continues along with the Aberdeenshire Shield and the Scottish Cup.

BRECHIN CITY 1-2 FRASERBURGH

GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup Semi Final| Saturday 30th September 2023

The victors celebrate a memorable win

24

Fraserburgh advanced to the Highland League Cup final after a fine victory against last season’s Highland League champions. In a tense encounter goals from Logan Watt and Ryan Sargent either side of a Fraser Macleod leveller were enough to see the Bellslea side get past Brechin City who had captain Euan Spark red carded for two bookable offences. The Broch now await the winners of the other semi-final between Brora Rangers and Keith who saw their match postponed due to a road accident in the North. The opening exchanges were cagey with John Moreland seeing his effort on 5 minutes blocked by Ryan Cowie, whilst Lewis Davidson fizzed a shot wide from 20 yards after 15 minutes. Joe Barbour also made a comfortable save from Macleod on 3 minutes. The Broch took the lead on 37 minutes when Watt disposed Macleod in midfield and found Greg Buchan who then passed it outside to Scott Barbour on the left flank. Ryan Cowie made a run beyond Barbour and when he got the ball, he picked out Watt with a low cross which he fired into the left corner from 12 yards. As the first half ended Spark was booked for a foul on Sargent and Buchan fired a half volley wide of target just before the break. Five minutes into the second half Brechin were reduced to 10 men when Sargent latched onto

Spark’s wayward header before being felled by the home captain at the edge of the box. Referee Filippo Mazzoni ruled that Spark had denied Sargent a clear goalscoring chance and showed him the red card. Despite their numerical disadvantage the Hedgemen levelled in the 55th minute when a short corner routine saw Hamish Thomson’s shot blocked, but the loose ball broke for Macleod and his strike was deflected beyond Barbour into the left corner of the net. The game was opening up now and Grady McGrath ran onto a ball behind the Broch defence but shot across the face of goal. At the other end Watt headed the ball onto Sargent but he drove his shot wide. The striker would not be denied just after the hour though, restoring Fraserburgh’s lead after Watt won the ball in midfield and he picked out Sargent who took a great first touch before firing into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box. With the minutes ticking down Cowie’s inswing corner was clawed away by Leonard Wilson and Connor Wood shot side of goal after being played through on goal, however the Broch held on comfortably to record a famous win.

Manager, Mark Cowie was thrilled at securing a final berth. The Broch haven’t won this competition since 2006, and whilst the club have secured silverware on 8 occasions during his tenure the League Cup has eluded him, having been defeated by Formartine United in 2018. He said “it’s the big cup because everyone in the League takes part and we’ve done well to get here. Whether it’s Brora or Keith it will be a tough game. We maybe haven’t been consistent enough in the last few games, but if we turn up, we can cause any team problems. It will be a difficult final, but you’re there to win it and we’ll give it our best shot.” Reflecting on the win against Brechin, Cowie added “I’m delighted and over the piece I think we deserved it. The sending off makes it a bit easier, but even up to then I thought we were the better side. Our shape was tremendous and without the ball we plugged the gaps we know Brechin can exploit, and our front two cause problems when we have it.” Full Time: Brechin City 1 Fraserburgh 2 Brechin City: Leonard Wilson, Ryan Ferguson, Kevin McHattie (Michael Cruickshank 67), Hamish Thomson, Euan Spark, Seth Patrick, Grady McGrath (Stuart Heenan 85), Fraser Macleod, John Moreland, Liam Duell (Marc Scott 56), Ewan Murray.

FRASERBURGH 1-2 FORMARTINE UNITED Breedon Highland League| Wednesday 4th October 2023

26 The Broch went searching for an early goal but Lewis Davidson fired well over after Ryan Sargent has set him up on 5 minutes. A minute later Formartine took the lead when a poor kick out by Joe Barbour was pounced on by Julian Wade and he slotted the ball home from just inside the box. Ryan Cowie played the ball forward to Sargent on 7 minutes but the striker fired his shot across Ewen Macdonald and just wide. Three minutes later Sargent raced clear of a static Formartine defence but he saw his goal bound shot cleared off the line by Rhys Thomas. The visitors almost went 2 up on 14 minutes when Scott Lisle tried his luck from the edge of the penalty area but Kieran Simpson was on hand to deflect the ball away. Just before the half hour Lewis Wilson crossed for ex-Broch striker Paul Campbell, but the normally deadly forward blasted high over. The reprieve barely lasted a minute however, when Simpson mistimed a clearance and the ball

fell to Lisle who powered a shot past Barbour from a tight angle to make it 2-0 to the Pitmedden side. On 36 minutes Sargent fired in a shot from distance when fizzed just wide. Three minutes later the Broch went even closer to reducing the leeway but Jamie Beagrie’s effort was cleared off the line. Just on half time Paul Young had a shot saved after Sean Butcher’s knock down. The home side looked to make a quick response just after the break but Greg Buchan’s dangerous cross from the left to the back post was cleared away. Graeme Rodger went close on 50 minutes but Beagrie got in the path of his shot to block the Formartine captain’s effort. Midway through the half Cowie’s cross from the left was met by the head of Sargent but Macdonald was well placed to save. Wade had a chance to seal the points on 74 minutes when the ball broke to him, but his shot from the edge of the box went just wide.

The Broch were handed a lifeline on 77 minutes when a cross broke to substitute Connor Wood and he fired home from 12 yards. Matthew McLean thought he had made the points safe on 81 minutes, but his header from a corner was cleared by Davidson. Into the last 10 minutes and Lisle had another effort blocked by Beagrie. The Broch were reduced to 10 men with 5 minutes remaining when Paul Young was shown the red card after a foul on Dylan Lobban as the Formartine substitute broke clear. In injury time Lisle chipped the ball just over the crossbar before Logan Watt saw a header from a Cowie corner saved on the line. HUNTLY 4-1 FRASERBURGH Breedon Highland League| Saturday 7th October 2023

Joe Barbour - another clean sheet

28

Huntly came from behind to move up to second place in the Breedon Highland League with a 4-1 win against Fraserburgh. It was the first time the Black and Golds had beaten the Broch at Christie Park in the League since August 2012. The Broch took the lead on 21 minutes when Ryan Sargent ran onto a Logan Watt pass before finishing from a tight angle for his ninth goal of the campaign. th

In the 59 minute, Joe Barbour pulled off a great save to turn a Lyall Booth effort behind for a corner. From the resultant kick, Booth picked out Ross Still, who headed in his third of the season. Booth then got on the scoresheet four minutes later when he headed home a Lewis Crosbie cross. Huntly added a

third on 66 minutes when Crosbie burst down the right flank and found Robbie Foster, who laid the ball off to Michael Dangana to curl the ball into the net from 25 yards. With nine minutes remaining, the hosts broke on the counterattack with two substitutes combining as Angus Grant played in Callum Murray to make it 4-1 with a brilliant, chipped shot. It was a third league game without a win for Fraserburgh, and manager Mark Cowie admitted the goals they lost were costly. He said, “it seems like every mistake we make at the moment we’re getting punished for.” Full Time: Huntly 4 Fraserburgh 1

ABERDEEN 2-2 FRASERBURGH (5-4 on penalties) Aberdeenshire Shield Round 1| Wednesday 11th October 2023

30

Aberdeen saw off a stern challenge from Fraserburgh at Pittodrie in the first round of the Morrison Motors Aberdeenshire Shield where they had to come from behind twice, before eventually securing progression via a penalty shootout where Ross Doohan delivered two excellent saves. It was the development Dons who stepped up on the night to play the biggest role with Adam Emslie and Alfie Stewart both scoring during the 90 minutes, before Findlay Marshall remained composed to smash the match winning spot kick home from 12 yards after the shootout went to sudden death. Aberdeen named a strong starting XI for the first-round clash with regular first team faces such as Angus MacDonald, Ester Sokler and Pape Habib Gueye all drafted into a side that also featured a host of development Dons, including Formartine loanees Dylan Lobban and Adam Emslie. There were also starting spaces for Marshall and Jack Milne, who recently joined Findlay in committing his long-term future to the club. Summer signings Ross Doohan, Rhys Williams and Or Dadia were also all involved, and there was a starting space for Vincente Besuijen. The visitors made two changes to their team that were defeated 4-1 at Huntly in the Highland league on Saturday – Lewis Davidson and Josh Bolton came into the side, Logan Watt and Connor Wood those who made way. Willie West captained the Broch on what was his 650th appearance for the club. The opening 20 minutes passed without any real goal mouth action. Besuijen’s chipped through ball to Marshall looked promising, but Joe Barbour was alert and came out to claim the ball inside his six-yard box. It was then the ‘Broch who created a couple chances of their own: Cowie got the better of Dadia and flashed a cross into the Dons box, but it was eventually cleared. Ryan Sargent had a good chance to shoot at goal after he drove at MacDonald, but he could only drag his shot wide. Besuijen was the first man in red to properly test Barbour. After some tidy link up play with Sokler his effort from the edge of the box was comfortably saved. Fraserburgh opened the scoring after 23 minutes through a real piece

of individual quality. Scott Barbour came inside from the right and curled an effort with real finesse past the helpless Doohan to make it 0-1 to the visitors. The lead didn’t last long however and just eight minutes later Aberdeen were level. Emslie drove down his lefthand side and with Donaldson backpedalling he had the space to unleash a low drive that got the better of Barbour. 1-1. It looked like Aberdeen would take the lead before the half was out when Lobban tried his luck from distance – his shot bravely blocked by a Broch defender, but it fortuitously wound up at the feet of Sokler, who to his dismay was only able to drill a close-range effort into the side netting. Just five minutes into the restart Aberdeen were inches away from pulling in front after Sokler rose highest inside the box to divert a header off the crossbar. The hosts dominated possession as they searched for the goal they craved but their Highland league counterparts were giving few chances away. Up the other end Fraserburgh began to ask questions of the Dons defence and with Dadia momentarily receiving treatment off the field of play won a handful of corners, but they were unable to take advantage. On the hour mark Fraserburgh thought they were ahead after they bundled the ball into the back of the net from close range after a defensive mix up but to the relief of the Dons defence the assistant referee’s flag was raised for offside. The pressure continued to ramp up on Aberdeen with the hosts struggling to keep a hold of the ball. Bolton was gifted possession and drilled an inviting ball across the face of the Merkland end goal, but there were no takers. Fraserburgh blinked first and elected to bring on Ross Aitken and Aidan Sopel on for the final quarter of the tie, with Bolton and Davidson making way. Aberdeen had settled down and won a few corners of their own minutes’ prior, but like their counterparts they were also unable to produce anything of quality from them and the game rumbled into the final 20 minutes finely poised. Like his strike partner Sokler, Gueye came ever so close to getting a goal and his first in red, but his close-range header was

stopped on the line. There were claims that the ball had potentially snuck over the line, but referee Duncan Nicholson waved play on. With ten minutes to play Fraserburgh pulled ahead. A ball through the middle caught out the Dons defence and with Doohan in no man’s land Sargent’s effort came off the post before falling back to the feet of the attacker to prod over the line. Following the goal Under 18’s captain Alfie Stewart and left back Brendan Hamilton were introduced, with Dadia and Besuijen making way. Stewart’s impact was immediate, his first contribution was enough to pull the Dons level with the midfielder dancing through a sea of black and white jerseys before applying a smart finish from inside the box. Fraserburgh’s lead was short lived, and Aberdeen were level just two minutes after going behind for a second time. Stewart continued to look a clever introduction and he teed up Marshall on the angle who pushed a shot goal bound from inside the box, but it looked to come off the bar and bounce out of danger as Aberdeen pushed for a winner in the 90. In the final minute of regulation time Emslie saw his shot saved before Fraserburgh raced up the other end to try and get a winner of their own. There were to be no more chances and the tie headed straight to penalty kicks at the RDS end for a place in the second round. Full Time: Aberdeen 2 Fraserburgh 2 Ross Doohan was the star man for the Dons in the shootout and did incredibly well to make two strong saves, both diving low to his left to deny the ‘Broch. Gueye suffered the disappointment of putting his spot kick over the bar, but Aberdeen recovered well and won the shootout through a well-placed penalty from Marshall that saw them through to the next round. After Penalty Kicks: Aberdeen XI win 5-4 Aberdeen: Ross Doohan, Angus MacDonald, Rhys Williams, Jack Milne, Or Dadia (Brendan Hamilton 80), Vicente Besuijen (Alfie Stewart 80), Papa Habib Gueye, Adam Emslie, Findlay Marshall, Ester Sokler, Dylan Lobban. FRASERBURGH 3-0 TURRIFF UNITED Breedon Highland League| Saturday 14th October 2023

A first Broch goal for Aidan Sopel as he celebrates with Willie West

32

The Broch were looking to build on their impressive performance against a strong Aberdeen XI in midweek and almost got off to the perfect start when Ryan Sargent played a one-two with Scott Barbour only to see his shot well saved by David Dey. On 11 minutes Paul Young saw his effort from the edge of the box blocked and five minutes later Connor Wood cut inside from the left flank and curled a shot just wide of the far post. The opening goal was delayed too long however, when on 20 minutes Young crossed from the right and Sean Butcher met the ball perfectly to finish from 8 yards out. Just before the half hour Willie West saw his header from a Barbour corner saved as the Broch kept up the pressure. It was all Broch and Wood found West with a pass but the Fraserburgh captain fired his shot over. Turriff had their moments too though and John Allan was unlucky to see his shot at goal deflected wide by Jamie Beagrie. Just before the interval a Turriff corner from the left was met by Finlay Murray, but Joe Barbour pulled off a great save to tip it over the bar. The visitors came out firing ad four minutes after the break a cross found Allan inside the home penalty area, but Barbour was equal to the task and pushed the shot away. On 56 minutes a Greg Buchan cross caused panic inside the Turriff box and both Barbour and Butcher saw their efforts blocked. Turriff almost levelled on 59 minutes when Connor Grant crossed from the right and Neil Gauld swept in a shot which Barbour did well to save. A minute later Jack

McKenzie fired in a shot from the edge of the box, but once again Barbour was there to repel the danger. The Broch went searching for a second just after the hour mark when Ross Aitken picked out Barbour at the back post but the Broch’s leading scorer was denied by Dey in the visitor’s goal. He could do nothing to prevent Aidan Sopel scoring his first goal for the Broch on 66 minutes, however. West played the ball into the winger’s feet and he fired past the Turriff custodian to double the home sides lead. Barbour went close from a Wood cross on 72 minutes and at the other end Murray Cormack fired a shot wide of the Fraserburgh goal. The match was finished as a contest on 80 minutes when West saw his shot tipped over and from the resultant corner by Barbour, Beagrie glanced the ball home to make it 3-0. Manager Mark Cowie was delighted with the win. He said “Winning is a feeling we haven’t had for a while and after Wednesday’s Aberdeenshire Shield game against Aberdeen where we were excellent it was pleasing to get the victory. We knew Turriff would be coming here on a high after their fine recent win away to Formartine and I thought our guys could be tired after their efforts at Pittodrie.” “But we scored three excellent goals which were well created and I don’t think Joe Barbour had two much to do. Some of our play could have been better but it was difficult to play in those conditions. The win gets us back on track and pulls us back into the pack, so I’m delighted with the week.”

FRASERBURGH 1-2 BONNYRIGG ROSE Scottish Gas Men’s Scottish Cup Round 2| Saturday 28th October 2023

34

Ryan Cowie’s free kick evades Martin for the leveller The Broch suffered Scottish Cup heartbreak after an extra time defeat by SPFL 2 side Bonnyrigg Rose. Goals from Angus Mailer and Callum Connolly either side of Ryan Cowie’s injury time leveller were enough to see the visitors progress to round 3. The home side also had Bryan Hay red carded in extra time as they battled to take the tie to penalties. Jamie Beagrie had the first effort on goal after 4 minutes, but his long-range shot was comfortably saved by Bonnyrigg keeper Patrick Martin. 8 minutes later Robbie McGale crossed to Connolly at the edge of the box who saw his volley saved by Joe Barbour. Midway through the half Bradley Barrett cut the ball back from the right to Ross Gray and his shot went across the face of goal and just out of the reach of Alieu Faye. On 33 minutes Gray and McGale combined to set up a chance for the latter, but once again Barbour was able to repel the danger.

On 37 minutes the home side had a shout for a penalty when Ryan Sargent went tumbling under a challenge from Martin, but to the displeasure of the Broch support he awarded a free kick to the visitors and booked the striker for simulation. Ten minutes after the break Mailer tried his luck from 20 yards, but Barbour swallowed up the shot. On 65 minutes Lewis Davidson found Scott Barbour with a pass and the Broch striker fizzed in a shot from 25 yards which Martin did well to hold. The deadlock was broken on 82 minutes when Mailer picked up a headed clearance by Kieran Simpson and fired a 20 yarder past Barbour into the top right corner of the net. With full time approaching the Broch pushed Simpson up front and he was fouled five yards outside the penalty area. Cowie took the resultant free kick and curled the ball past the

despairing dive of Martin into the net to take the tie to extra time. Full Time: Fraserburgh 1 Bonnyrigg Rose 1 Barbour made a good stop from Connolly in the first minute of the extra period, but he could do nothing to prevent Barrett from giving ‘Rose the lead on 96 minutes with a dipping volley just under the crossbar. The home side pushed for another equaliser and should have had it on 115 minutes when Beagrie found substitute Sean Butcher with a knock down, but he blasted the ball well over. The same player had a similar chance a minute later but this time he was flagged for offside. Matters got worse for the Broch on 117 minutes when Hay was shown a straight red card for a robust challenge on Dean Watson. The visitors managed to hold on despite some late Broch pressure. After Extra Time: Fraserburgh 1 Bonnyrigg Rose 2 Fraserburgh: Joe Barbour, Lewis Davidson (Aidan Sopel 114), Bryan Hay, Ryan Cowie, Kieran Simpson, Paul Young, Jamie Beagrie, Ryan Sargent, Scott Barbour (Sean Butcher 81), Logan Watt, Greg Buchan (William West 105). FRASERBURGH FC SUPPORTERS CLUB NEWS

On the last Wednesday of September, we were on our travels to Kynoch Park to play Keith, unfortunately, storm Agnes arrived just before we did, Sean Butcher scored with a header in the first half, the goal was given by the referee but the stand side assistant put his flag up for a reason not obvious at the time, neither team could break the deadlock and went in to enjoy a hot cup of tea.

The U21’s were at the Bellslea on Monday 2nd October to play Formartine United, it was a tight match which saw the Broch unable to convert any of the chances they produced during the first half, the deadlock was broken in the 70th minute, Zaine Laird swung in a corner from the left wing, Callum Kelly headed towards goal and Willie West headed it into the top right-hand corner, another 3 points for the U21’s which keeps them in contention for the league title.

Keith broke the deadlock in the second half through a Mikey Taylor goal, Ryan Sargent’s cross come shot in the 70th minute was deflected in by Liam Cheyne, Keith went back in front from a goalmouth scramble, the Broch were awarded a penalty which was taken by Ryan Sargent in the 86th minute, the keeper saved his first effort but he slotted home the rebound, it felt like 2 points dropped as we dominated most of the match.

Our hectic spell continues with a midweek game at home against Formartine United, 2 early mistakes at the back resulted in Formartine going 2 nil up, we created enough chances but on the day we were unable to convert any of them, in the second half we laid siege on their goalmouth, the Formartine defenders were just hoofing the ball as far and as high over the dyke as they could, at one point it looked like we were going to run out of match balls. Connor Wood came on as a sub and managed to score in the 79th min to give us all some hope, Paul Young was sent off late on and we were unable to score again, a disappointing start back at the Bellslea.

We were away to Brechin City on Saturday 30th September for the Semi-final of the GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup, we stopped at Brechin Golf Club for lunch and refreshments before the game, a good time was had by all, Mark changed the shape of the team and it worked like a dream, Brechin had the best of the opening half hour but it was the Broch that opened the scoring, Logan Watt won the ball in midfield and passed on to Scott Barbour, he passed forward to Ryan Cowie who had flown on past him, he cut the ball back from the byline and Logan slotted home with his right foot. Early in the second half Brechin were reduced to 10 men when Ryan Sargent was taken down just outside the box, Brechin levelled not long after when a deflected shot nestled into the bottom left corner, the game was won when Logan Watt sent Ryan Sargent clear on the hour mark, he slotted a left foot shot past the keeper into the bottom left corner. The Broch had other chances to add to the scoring but the game finished with us going into the final. Keith were unable to get to Brora due to an accident on the A9, so that game will be played on the following Saturday. Congratulations to Bryan Hay who while playing against Brechin made his 519th appearance for the Broch, that puts him 5th equal with Derek Milne in the all-time records, next to chase down is Russell McBride who is 4th on 583.

We were back on our travels to Huntly on the Saturday, the rain fell constantly and it was amazing to see the Christie Park surface still playable, we had strong claims for a penalty in the opening minutes but the referee waved play on, the Broch opened the soring in the 20th minute, Ryan Sargent played a one-two with Logan Watt who chipped the ball over the Huntly back line, Ryan headed the ball past Hobday and slotted home from a tight angle with his left foot. Huntly opened the second half strongly and equalized from a corner, they went ahead with a diving header, then a screamer from man of the match Michael Dangana from 25 yards put the home side further ahead, the Broch had chance to score but Hobday was in great form, another goal of the season from a break away gave Huntly all 3 points and a deserved win on the day. The U18’s were at home to Turriff United on Monday 9th. Hamish Gordon went on a powerful run in the 20th minute, he went past the Turriff defenders before stroking the ball past the keeper from 8 yards out, 2 minutes into the second-half Evan Anderson slotted the ball through the keeper’s legs to make it 2 nil, both teams created plenty of chances but failed to add to the scoring.

We were away to Aberdeen in the preliminary round of the Morrison Motors Aberdeenshire Shield, the Broch fans turned out in force at Pittodrie Stadium to see if we could retain the trophy, Scott Barbour gave us a dream start in the 22nd minute, Lewis Davidson took a throw in on the right, Scott holds the ball up and then turns inside, he curls a cracker of a left foot shot from 20 yards which goes high into the left side of the net, Aberdeen were back on level terms in the 30th minute, Adam Emslie waltzed through the Broch defence and sent a rightfoot shot into the bottom left-hand corner from 17 yards out, the Broch went back ahead in the 81st minute, Sean Butcher flicks the ball on with his foot, Ryan runs through the heart of the defence, he chips the ball over Ross Doohan and thankfully follows the ball in, it comes off the left-hand post and Ryan smacks the rebound into the empty net, 2 minutes later it was level again, Alfie Stewart slotted home after a slick Aberdeen move, the game finished all square and then went on to penalties, Aberdeen held their nerve and went on to win the shoot out by 5 goals to 4, we wish them the best of luck in the rest of the tournament. Aberdeen won 5-4 on penalties. Sean Butcher scored, Kieran Simpson scored, Ryan Sargent scored, Greg Buchan saved, Ryan Cowie scored, Paul Young saved. Congratulations to Willie West who while playing against Aberdeen made his 650th appearance for the Broch, Willie is in 3rd place in the all-time records for Broch appearances, next to chase down is Jimmy Young who is 2nd place on 680, Willie has also scored 166 goals during his career and is in 5th place and only 2 goals behind Graham Johnston who is in 4th place. We were next at home to Turriff United, the wind blew a gale again making conditions difficult to play a passing game, Sean Butcher slid in to turn a Paul Young cross into the net in the 20th minute, Aiden Sopel doubled our advantage in the 65th minute, Bryan Hay came off the bench to pass Derek Milne in the all-time appearances table, well done to Bryan that is a fantastic achievement, Jamie Beagrie wrapped up the points with a low strike in the 79th minute to secure all 3 points. The U21’s were at Banff to play Deveronvale on the Monday 16th, the Vale took the lead in the 7th minute, Aiden Sopel slung in a corner from the left, Bryan Hay headed the ball back out to him, he made space then curled in a shot which went in off the right hand post, just before half-time Joshua Hawkins had a shot at goal parried by the Vale keeper, Zane Laird reacted quickly and stroked the ball into the net, the home side levelled at the start of the second half with a shot which cannoned off the underside of the bar, they then went ahead in the 66th minute with a break up field, the Broch equalized in the 73rd minute, Aiden Sopel ‘s shot was saved by the keeper, the rebound fell to Stuart Laird at the edge of the box, he curled in a screamer

into the top corner, the Vale scored the final goal of the game in the 79th minute to grab all three points. We were supposed to be at home to Brora on the Saturday but due to storm Babet all games in the League had to be postponed. The U18’s were drawn at home to on Sunday 15th October in the SFA Youth Scottish Cup 3rd round, this game also had to be postponed due to the weather, the game will now be played on Sunday 12th November with a 2pm kick off, Stirling Albion being the opponents. On the last Saturday of the month we were drawn at home to Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic in the Scottish Cup 2nd round, the windy damp conditions made it very difficult to play a passing game, both sets of players were making mistakes all over the park, there were no goals scored in a cagey first half with very little between the 2 teams, Bonnyrigg took the lead in the 79th minute, Angus Mailer volleyed a screamer into the top right corner of the net with his right foot, Ryan Cowie fired in a free-kick with his left foot on 88 minutes to send the tie into extra time, Bradley Barrett scored the goal that took them into the next round of the Cup in the 95th minute, good luck to them in the future. We will be running a bus to the Banks O Dee game on Friday 3rd November which will leave the Elizabethan at 6:00pm, the cost of travel is £10 for adults and £5 for others. We will be running a bus to the Rothes game on Saturday 18th November, the bus will leave the Elizabethan at 12:30pm, the cost of travel is £15 for adults and £8 for others. MEMORY MATCH

THE BROCH BLITZ VALE WITH A LATE BURST DEVERONVALE 2-5 FRASERBURGH Aberdeenshire Cup Final | Saturday 7th April 1973 | Princess Royal Park, Banff

WHAT a second half! With the police called into action to quieten the crowd, Vale drawing level with a late goal, then the Brouch sewing up the Aberdeenshire Cup with a late scoring burst, this final had everything. DEVERONVALE: Mercer, Brown, Mackie, Anderson, Gordon, Scott, Wilson, Watt, Chalmers, Stewart, Innes FRASERBURGH: Forsyth, Whyte, Sharp, Crawford, McCann, Roger, Mackenzie, J.Noble, Fordyce, Newlands, Bowie Referee: WD Reid, Aberdeen Stewart forced a corner which the Broch cleared and Mackenzie raced awat to find Bowie on his own with a header which went inches past. Scott almost make the breakthrough in eight minutes when he unleashed a terrific 20-yarder which Forsyth did well to turn round the post. Chalmers headed Stewart's flag kick narrowly over. A cracking drive by Watt had Forsyth scrambling to save. Fraserburgh, however, found the net in

14 minutes when Bowie slammed hom a Mackenzie cross from close range only to have it chalked off for a hairline offside decision. Stewart was putting in a power of work for Vale and had two good tries blocked. But Fraserburgh almost caught them napping again when a Roger free kick found Jim Noble in the clear. Mercer had to make a desperate save with his feet to stop the inside right. Chalmers sent Innes through in 20 minutes, but he lofted it past the post as Forsyth came out. Brown and Crawford collected lectures as the referee tried to cool down the tackling. In 25 minutes a Chalmers cross found Wilson three yards out and his shot seemed a certain goal, until Forsyth made a fantastic acrobatic save. Forsyth punched out a difficult Innes free kick then Bowie hammered a Mackenzie corner kick inches past. Fraserburgh were now giving as good

53

as they got with Bowie getting far too much scope from the Vale defence. Vale were using the long ball while Fraserburgh relied on a close passing build up, but both sides remained committed to attack. Forsyth just punched a clever Stewart lob off the head of Wilson. A Mackenzie shot on the turn just cleared the bar in 40 minutes. Then another fine try from Mackezie was well saved by Mercer.

54

Anderson cracked a 25-yarder narrowly past, then Forsyth went full length to hold a Chalmers grounder as Vale hit back. The only thing missing from a hard fought and entertaining first half was a goal. Half-time: 0-0 The second half had a sensational start with Fraserburgh taking the lead right from the kick-off. BOWIE raced down the left and from 25 yards he beat Mercer with a spectacular drive. This goal sparked off amazing scenes of jubilation from the hundreds of Fraserburgh fans. Broch went all out for another one but Vale weathered a rather hectic spell and it took a fine tackle by Crawford to stop

Chalmers as he raced through. From the flag kick in 53 minutes Scott headed over the keeper and Sharp had to make a goal line clearance. Another great let off for Broch when a Stewart free kick saw Watt and Wilson have point blank tries saved by Forsyth. But in 58 minutes the visitors went two up. Bowie's low drive was cleared by Scott but only into the path of SHARP who first-timed a grounder into an empty net. Police and officials rushed into the grandstand after an outbreak of fighting and for a while there was as much action off the field as on it. CHALMERS raised home hopes when he netted with a fine volley in 63 minutes. WILSON cracked home a beautiful equaliser from the edge of the penalty box in 69 minutes. But in 78 minutes, Fraserburgh regained the lead with a diving header from NEWLANDS. Three minutes later, Jimmy NOBLE made it 4-2 after a blunder by Mercer. BOWIE converted a penalty in 89 minutes. Result: Deveronvale 2-5 Fraserburgh

FAN FOCUS NICOLA McHATTIE When did you start watching Fraserburgh and why? Who was your favourite player then? I was 13 or 14 years old - I had a crush on Russell McBride!

Which part of the ground do you go in and why? Any friends you want to mention? I always stand at the away side as we speak to Mikey McLean. We’ve always stood there as my son Logan gets to see the subs warming up.

Best game and why? It would have to be the Fort William game at the Broch in December ‘21. My sons Logan and Will were the mascots and the Broch won 12-0!

Worst game and why? I would go for the Cowdenbeath game in the Challenge Cup back in 2021 - we got beat with the last kick of the ball.

Favourite Fraserburgh player of all time and why? As mentioned, Russell McBride! I always thought he was the best while I was growing up.

who came up for the Scottish Cup game last season - here’s Logan with them and their flag.

Favourite current player? I would have to say Ryan Cowie, although Logan would disagree and say Scott Barbour. I’d also mention Logan Watt who is playing some great stuff just now. If you could sign one HFL player for the Broch who would it be? Paul Campbell from Formartine. He was an amazing player for the Broch and very quick. Your all-time Fraserburgh XI? 1. Joe Barbour 2. Chris Martin 3. Ryan Cowie 4. Russell McBride 5. Trevor Fleming 6. Logan Watt 7. Ian Murray 8. Neil McLaren 9. Sean Butcher 10. Ryan Sargent 11. Scott Barbour Thing you like best about the Club? It’s a very friendly club and always welcoming to fans. Everyone speaks to each other, like a big football family. You get a good laugh with visiting fans like the Stranraer lads

Favourite Highland League ground apart from Bellslea? I’d go for Princess Royal Park, Deveronvale. A nice clean ground. One thing you'd like to change about football? I would change the offside rule. Half of the time it just seems they’re guessing if it’s onside or not! Any other club you support? I’m a big Man City fan. Who's going to win the league this season? Broch hopefully!
