MICHAEL MURRAY November 2024: A Month to Remember In my last Bellslea Bulletin piece, I wrote, "We are in a strong position to build on October." Little did I know just how true that statement would prove to be. The team has outdone itself, and what a position we find ourselves in now!

We have to face Keith in the quarterfinal of the Aberdeenshire Shield after the match was postponed earlier in the week.

Meanwhile, this Saturday, we take on Buckie in the Highland League Cup quarterfinals.

Our game against Annan Athletic was a shining example of what this team is capable of. Every player gave their all, and the result was

Michael M urray nothing short of extraordinary—one that will surely stand as a landmark moment in the club's history.

When the draw was made, any home tie would have been viewed as a good outcome, but this result exceeded even our greatest expectations.

Facing Rangers on Sunday 19th January will mark seven years since we last played their first team. This time, it’s on their home turf at Ibrox, making it a truly special occasion for everyone connected to the club.

For Fraserburgh as a whole, this will be a momentous game, one I’m certain the entire town will rally behind.

I must admit, like many of you, I didn’t get much sleep on Monday night after the draw. I’m incredibly fortunate to have the support of a fantastic board and committee, all of whom have experienced great times with the club before.

Here’s to more unforgettable moments in what is shaping up to be an incredible season.

BELLSLEA BULLETIN 19 How football, and life for that matter, can change in a blink of an eye.

This month’s section could have been so much different had events on Saturday 30th November not turned out as they did which in turn led to dramatic start of December on Monday evening.

The month started with an away trip to Strathspey Thistle in the league. On paper everyone saw this as a straightforward Fraserburgh win and were asking how many we would score. I have been in the game too long now and have always stressed on how difficult every single game in this league can be.

We won the last meeting against Strathspey 11-0 at home which saw us finish the season 3 points off the top.

However this new Strathspey team was a long way from the one we had played a few months earlier. They have seen significant investment in both playing staff as well as facilities which if continued and managed correctly, will only see them climb the league table.

We had previously lost any chance of winning the league, so I see opportunities this season to try things and introduce youngsters more regularly to give them the exposure which will hopefully stand them in good stead for years to come. Some of the things I try will look great and work but there will be things that I try which maybe don’t work as well but it is all learning curves. We went into this game with a different formation and had a couple of players maybe playing out of their natural position.

Anyway, it did not work in the first forty-five minutes so we changed it at half time. Some may say that was too late and despite dominating large spells, we drew the game 2-2 which resulted in more dropped points.

This result led on to one of the lowest points in my management career to date. I

thebroch.online always try to protect my family from football and the emotions involved in it but sometimes I can not help it.

Despite what some may think, I don’t go home and be all happy after poor performances and results. I do have a face on me as I am human, but I try not to let it affect my family life. As I get older, I learn to deal with it better and I can move on quicker from disappointment.

That doesn’t mean to say that I do not get down about our scores. I do get angry but not because of the score, more because I know what this group of players can achieve and when we drop below a level which we have set, then I do take this to heart.

During the weekend there were some negative comments about me and my ability to manage this club with question marks over whether I should still be in charge or not. I appreciate that this is part of the job and that everyone is entitled to their opinion. However my kids are now at an age that they are seeing these comments, so they hit home that little bit harder.

Believe me, if I feel I can not take this club any further, then I will step aside and let someone else do it.

Additionally, if the club feel a change is needed then I would respect that. This club has given me more in the last 10 years than I could have ever imagined. I think we have had a very successful 10 years to date with some unbelievable memories and hopefully we can build some more. But these will ultimately take time as we can’t expect the youngsters coming in to pick up the baton right away.

They need the older experienced guys around them to protect and guide them until they are at the stage where they can take the club on themselves.

Of course we still want to compete in everything but it will get harder and we have to accept that, however I believe we can still be successful whilst sticking to our model.

7 Anyway, a couple of free weekends for one reason or another and we finish the month off with a home tie in the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup against League One side Annan Athletic. I will give you an insight in to what you do not see. On Saturday 23rd November, we were supposed to be at home to Wick but the game went off with the weather warning in place. So the whole country had a weather warning in place yet the Montrose game at home to Annan was still on. Kick off was delayed twice and it eventually started at 5pm.

James Duthie (Assistant Manager) and Matthew West (Youth Manager) both travelled down to the game to watch Annan and come back with more ideas on how they play, their threats and weaknesses etc. These two guys took time out of their lives to go and do some background work on our opponents in the cup whilst I had a day off. I can not stress to you enough the work all of my backroom team do to help me and ultimately help the club. Not many would have taken in this game.

We compiled a report on the Sunday and planning started the Monday after. The planning worked and we played in my opinion the best, most complete 90 minutes in my term as manager and won the game 2-0. We were a constant attacking threat and should have scored at least two more. We weren’t under much threat however the pressure that was there was expertly kept at bay by our defence first and foremost. It was a game that has given me so much pride in the group and I was delighted for the club to get in to the hat for the fourth round – if only we knew what lay in store!!

A much better weekend with a lot of positive comments which were so richly deserved as the players were unbelievable.

Then Monday nights draw comes around and we are pulled out of the hat to play Rangers FC at Ibrox. The emotion I am sure we have all felt has been unreal.

Financially for the club this will be huge, but I am more overjoyed with the experience and the memories this will give the current group of players.

We had this tie a few years back however you only need to speak 2 minutes on it to Finlay and Jason and you will appreciate yourself the effort they both personally put in to it along with many others.

However, this time that stress won’t be there as much as we play at Ibrox Stadium with hopefully a lot of fans watching. I know the Broch fans will be as loyal as ever so hopefully the Rangers faithful are the same and not only get a ticket to support their loved club, but also help support little old Fraserburgh from the humble Highland League.

It gives us something special to look forward to however we have a lot of important games before then which, at this time, take priority. The message from me will always be one game at a time and that’s what we focus on.

I will finish by saying that this trip to Ibrox will be great for the club and of course the management and players but I am delighted that we have been able to set this up for you the supporters and also Fraserburgh and the people who call this place home. It takes true fans to travel to Wick Academy and Brora every season, to go to places such as Strathspey Thistle and Rothes in the depths of winter so please take the time to enjoy this experience with us. It is one that we all need to look forward to and embrace.

I said to the players that it isn’t luck that this is happening. It is happening because of the effort they constantly put in and what they did in rounds one to three. It isn’t luck, it is earned, and they deserve it – YOU THE SUPPORTERS ALSO DESERVE IT. Thanks as always Mark

BELLSLEA BULLETIN 19 What a month…

Not a lot of games played but plenty of drama!

When Steven Naismith pulled out ball number 16, Fraserburgh to play Rangers at Ibrox, I was in a bit of shock. Having just got my loon Zack to finally fall asleep I managed to stay quite calm but the messages started to ping in.

Absolutely magic! Again!

Neither I nor the team got much sleep that night through excitement and so for the cup game to be cancelled against Keith was perhaps not a bad thing!

I’m chuffed for the fans as hopefully everyone who wants to go will be able to get a ticket this time. I am sure they will have a great day and hopefully they can support in their numbers!

WILLIE WEST The desire and discipline against Annan was a joy to watch. I couldn’t single anyone out, what a shift everyone put in and I was so proud of them all.

It feels like some time ago but the players also had our annual team night oot in November. We decided to venture out to Aberdeen to enhance the team spirit and camaraderie.

Excellently organised by Hayser, we started out the evening at the Legends Bar where we got to play some pool and darts. Not only can Keezo leap 8 foot into the air to win

nearly every aerial battle, he is also quite the hand at pool and won the competition. Hopefully he can get his hands on other trophies before the end of the season!

We then moved on to a couple of bars before heading to a Karaoke Bar where some of us got to show off our other talents!

Thankfully (for me), our taxis had come early to pick the Brochers up.

Again, the big man didn’t disappoint when Hayser walked in fashionably late into the taxi with some nutritious meals for us all! Top man Bryan!

Weather (and Storm Bert) caused havoc with the schedule and we only managed to play three games. We trained in some horrendous conditions but I’m pleased to say there were very few gripes from the squad.

We did get to play some football in November but it didn’t start as well as we would have liked when making the journey to play Strathspey. It had been noted that it had been some time since we have ‘enjoyed’ a long journey home and that was unfortunately to continue having drawn 2-2.

Strathspey were definitely much improved from last season, but it was a hard one for us to

take especially when we had been making some strides up the table.

That was to be the only league game in November with the Wick game being cancelled.

Next up, Forres in the League Cup which is a competition the group is particularly keen to do well in. We also wanted some revenge after drawing with Forres earlier in the season in the League where I thought we deserved more! It was a solid performance and win with the reward being with an away tie against Buckie - this won’t be easy as we have learned from playing there twice already this season!

The Scottish Cup - it doesn’t feel too long ago when I said to the media that I had only ever beaten League opposition once in my career. Since then we have overturned Stranraer, Forfar and now Annan… although I’m not sure if I can include Annan, having only contributed five minutes!

My injury resulted in a great tactical change from Mark and Bax though, getting Aidan on to the park to cause havoc. I didn’t see the first half as, thanks to the great medical staff we have on site at the Bellslea in

Willie W est Gayle Noble and Sarah Robertson, I managed to get stitched up in the changing room ready to watch the second half and avoid a wait at the hospital. A big personal thanks to them both.

Hearing the cheers from the fans when the goals went in certainly eased any pain I had.

Watching on with my Dad and Grandad in the second half, the players’ desire and discipline was a joy to watch. I couldn’t single any one of them out, what a shift they all put in and I was so proud of them all.

It was great to see the highlights too with Fig setting up both goals and Connor right place, right time with a straight forward tap in to continue his habit of scoring big

goals! As I said earlier, Big Keezo leaped 8 feet in to the air to score a trademark header which was really important to give us that cushion and lead into the 2nd half.

Lastly, a big congratulations to our All-Time Top Goalscorer Scott Barbour making his 400th game this month.

Also, in case anyone thought I had come into some other riches last month, I can confirm that it was mistaken identify and I was not the lucky Bounty winner of £10k!

Rangers away is better anyway haha.

2024 Top Moments As 2024 draws to a close, we take a look back at some of our best moments of the year. Although we couldn’t add a trophy, there was plenty to look back on fondly and the signs are good for the year ahead!

CUP CRUISE AT CHRISTIE PARK Huntly are in confident mood having won 4-1 in the earlier League encounter at Christie Park, but the Broch have since roared back with a seven match unbeaten run. Ryan Sargent and Paul Young both score a goal in each half - Paul’s first an audacious 45-yarder - and it’s the Broch who prevail by four goals to nil.

LATE, LATE SHOW SNARES PITMEDDEN POINT Goals from Rodger and Wade have given Formartine a two goal lead and with 83 minutes on the clock we look down and out. Up steps Sean Butcher to reduce the deficit before captain Willie West’s last-gasp strike salvages an unlikely looking point for the Broch.

FRASERBURGH FIRSTS It’s a night of Fraserburgh firsts as a largely youthful Broch side hit a magnificent seven at Rothes. Our starting eleven features two Broch debutants goalkeeper Andy Reid and young forward Stuart Laird.

Further debuts came through substitutes Dylan Robertson and Adam Henderson. The match also featured firsts in terms of first team goals through a Flynn McKay brace and Cammy Robertson in only his second top-team appearance.

SCOTTISH CUP FLYER The Scottish Cup campaign gets off to a flying start with a home tie v. Rothes. The Broch waste no time in turning the screw as Aidan Sopel nets after just four minutes and go on to rattle up another seven to sail through to Round Two with an 8-0 victory.

TURRIFF TRUMPED Another Scottish Cup tie and Turriff are the visitors to the Bellslea. In a keenly contested encounter, Sean Butcher gives the Broch a lead minutes before half-time. Turriff's Timi Fatona hits back for the visitors to force the match into extra time before goals from Jamie Beagrie and Connor Wood see the lads home and onward to Round 3 and Annan Athletic.

WEST HITS 700 The Highland League Cup campaign kicks off with the visit of Forres Mechanics. The home side prevail by two goals to nil, but what makes the match remarkable is a 700th appearance for skipper Willie West.

I’ll start my update by congratulating Mark, James, our coaches and all the 1st team squad for a great, well deserved victory over Annan Athletic on Saturday. A good Scottish Cup campaign is our goal every season and to reach Round 4 this season is absolutely superb.

Like all Broch fans I’m still coming to terms with the prospect of heading to Ibrox to face Rangers in January, and I’m sure the boys will do themselves, our Club and the Highland League, proud – a well-deserved reward to our Management team & players AND to our fans, who support us passionately season after season - it’s important the occasion is enjoyed by us all, as history tells us these moments don’t happen very often.

After a great run in the Challenge Cup, Mark has again led our Club to the latter stages of a National Cup competition and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark on behalf of all Directors for putting “The Broch” on the wider Scottish Football map this season.

We set our financial budgets in late spring annually and it’s fair to say we certainly didn’t forecast for this potential financial boost next Month, so we’ll need to take stock after

George T hom the game to ensure we are sensible and prudent in our financial management.

For me, the icing on the cake has been the fact that the game has been selected for live coverage on the BBC and moved to a Sunday - here’s hoping we’ll be playing in front of over 50,000 fans at Ibrox Stadium, including a large army of Broch fans, and now with a large TV audience too.

Anyway, whatever happens on the pitch, the situation we find ourselves in will give us an important financial boost – operationally, nothing changes as we strive season on season to generate the income needed to allow us to exceed the ongoing operational costs of our Club, with our priority continuing to be youth development, the team on the pitch, and at the same time, ensuring we are making provision for the nonplaying side to include Bellslea Park maintenance and capital improvements.

Some specific updates since last month…………..

CLUB 1910: Engaging with, and working with the business community that support us, is really important, and through our varied Club 1910 activities there are opportunities for us

all to come together to share common challenges and hear from specialists in areas such as finance, legal, AI and Marketing.

On 14th November our Club 1910 members had a really insightful tour of the facilities at the Ian M Cheyne Building, Wellbank, Peterhead of Score Group, one of our main sponsors. A special thanks to Ian Davidson for organising our visit , hosting us, and sharing how Score has evolved globally over the past 42 years. Thanks also to Greg Smedley and Ross Fenty for showing us all around and giving us a flavour of the various engineering operations that take place in the building.

A real Centre of Excellence right on our doorstep in the North-east.

BRAE CUP CONTROVERSY Broch Herald Monday 23rd January 1922 Speculation was rife all forenoon as to whether the match would be played or not and astonishment prevailed when it became known that Peterhead were travelling.

Considering the weather conditions a considerable number of spectators turned out and took what shelter they could get.

The teams turned out as follows.Fraserburgh - Cecil Shield; John Finnie; James McRobbie, William Walker, John Buchan; Lachie McDonald, Donald Paterson, Charles McKay, John McNab and Geddes Peterhead - Buchan, Sutherland and Hannah, Campbell, Aitken and Slessor, Reid, Hutchison, Allan, Thomson and Milne Referee - Mr P.O. Davidson, Peterhead Walker named the wrong side of the coin and the result was the locals had to face the gale.

Peterhead at once bore down on Shield and forced a corner but the wind put the ball over the wall. McDonald got away and sent in a stinger which Buchan fumbled and the ball came to McKay who had a chance but was pulled up for a foul.

The majority of spectators thought the half time was the cause of the stoppage and great indignation was expressed when it became known that the game had been abandoned. The facts are these - The referee inspected the playing pitch on arrival and declared it playable for a friendly but not for a cup tie.

However it was decided ultimately to play the cup-tie with the result already mentioned. The Peterhead team decided not to go out again.

The referee told Fraserburgh that if they went out and lined up they could claim the match if Peterhead did not turn out. This was agreed to and on the referee informing one of the Peterhead representatives of this arrangement he was promptly informed that he could not change his decision so the poor referee had to go back and inform the locals that the game really was abandoned.

Only a very few of the spectators had any kick coming on Saturday. Most of them realised that the game ought never to have been started, and our advice to the thoughtless ones would be to put themselves in the players position.

Many were inclined to blame the directors but we fail to see how they could help things. The whole incident was just one of many which may crop up at any time.

McNab and Geddes got away on the left and the latter after beating two opponents was unceremoniously bundled over the line.

It is understood that spectators will be admitted free to the next Brae Cup tie of showing the half of last Saturday's ticket.

Back came Peterhead but they could make nothing of the local defence.

The half hour we saw Fraserburgh play gave us great hope for the Scottish Cup tie.

Fraserburgh on occasions came near scoring and facing such a hurricane they deserve every credit for the display of pluck and good football they put up.

The defence was "stonewall", goalie, back and half line with in their glory.

Peterhead were pressing when the whistle went 7 minutes from half time, neither team having scored.

Walker, Buchan and Birnie put in a great amount of work with little if anything between them. Walker thoroughly deserved the frequent applause his play drew forth and we

venture to think that his few adverse critics will at last give credit where it is due.

Buchan and Birnie were great and a repetition of the same form at Alexandra this week should go a long way to "bring home the bacon".

The front line showed up well and some tricky work cam from the quintette. All eyes were on the left wing and our opinion is that if the ball had come over to the quarter oftener we might not have wanted a goal even with the gale against us.

McNab and Geddes we hope will form the left wing.

McKay was good but he was inclined to do too much on his own when a pass would have been played better.

Looking over our chances this week we are sure that if the team of our hopes takes the field with the same confidence as they did last Saturday and play the same determined game there will be tears "Down the Vale." Alloa beat the Vale on Saturday by 4-0.

Meeting of the ADFA The Aberdeenshire and District Football Association met in the Trades Hall, Aberdeen - Mr James Stewart presiding.

A letter was read from the Scottish Football Association, pointing out the necessity of giving every assistance to clubs in their endeavours to destroy all forms of hooliganism. A special plea is made to spectators for clean speech.

Aberdeenshire Charity Cup Final The Charity cup final will take place at Fraserburgh during February. Fraserburgh FC will meet Portsoy, who beat Keith in the semi-final 6-1. Mr J.H. Russell will referee.

Footnote: The Broch beat Peterhead 4-0 in the replayed Brae Cup match and defeated Portsoy by 5-2 in the Charity Cup Final.

MATTHEW WEST Our U18s group are in a good moment having shown great attitude and performance levels across the games and sessions this month.

A win on the road against Buchanhaven Hearts was followed by a 4-1 victory against Dyce at Bellslea. I must commend the players for the efforts in particular during recent sessions where we have had to endure some brutal weather conditions.

In addition to our own matches our players have been busy with so much going on with the ADJFA, Juvenile Scottish Cup, Schools, Select teams and National team schedules.

Introduced into our youth programme a number of years ago, we feel this is a vital tool in order to reflect, align and motivate our individuals with feedback on many aspects of the game.

The positivity and feedback from the group across these sessions was refreshing and shows how fortunate our youth players are to have such great support from their families.

It was great to see Dean Cowie back with Alex Mair in the dugout for the U21s match against Deveronvale. A real strong showing on the night from the team. The highlight was watching Deano pacing the dugout with his walking sticks as he recovers from his knee operation.

thebroch.online By sheer coincidence this came on the Monday after skipper Willie West played game 700 for the club.

William committed time out of his busy schedule to chat to our youth players for half an hour before training.

William had put in effort to prepare some slides to present to the group.

Invaluable advice and an inspiring insight into William’s career, tips on how to perform at a high level, advice on how to avoid injuries, insights into managing time, overcoming set backs, and further advice on what our players should consider when he looked back on when he was that age.

William is quite unique.

For sure it is a challenge for anyone to replicate such success but if we can take motivation and realisation of how dedication and drive can provide such a platform for success, this 30 minutes with our group can be of significant benefit to them.

On 9th December our U21s travel to Pitmedden as they take on Formartine. Huntly come to the Bellslea on 16th December for the U18s final home match of the year. We did not perform well in matches against Huntly last season we need to be ready for a really tough match.

FFC Youth listen on intently to first team skipper Willie West

We then finish the year with a visit to Spain Park on Monday 30th December. It’s clear the task we have on our hands here when you see how well Banks o’ Dee have done in the national competition.

This is a challenge we must look forward to and we must go there aware of what to expect.

For our players and staff I'm sure, amid the busy schedule, enjoy the festive period with our families and look forward to 2025.

I am immensely proud of the collective effort from all who have supported our Youth Programme throughout the year. A great ambition is shared - to develop local, talented

players and build within these young apprentices a love of the game, and enthusiasm for the club.

Credit to Annan Athletic skipper Tommy Muir who went over to some of the kids in the terraces at full time last Saturday and said "if you grow up and play football - play like your team in black and white did today". What a message and compliment to our team.

The Scottish Cup 4th round draw for me, is not luck - it’s the outcome of thorough and diligent professionalism throughout the club.

The Interview

Bryan Hay An undoubted highlight of the season to date has been our Scottish Cup run. Bryan Hay is someone who has been through it all many times before - this being his sixteenth Scottish Cup campaign - and like everyone at the Club he’s delighted with how it’s gone this year.

Bryan said, “The Annan result really was massive for us a team.

Not only the result but I think the performance too. In the end we probably could have won by a more comfortable margin. We have played SPFL League teams in the Scottish Cup in the past and, although we have caused some upsets, we have probably let ourselves down a bit. I think we have probably lacked a bit of belief when coming up against this kind of opposition.

“But I think our belief and mentality were spot on against Annan as the performance and result showed. The Coaching staff had done their due diligence on them. The two midfielders loved to get on the ball as much as they could, which you would expect from players of the calibre of Wullie Gibson and Paul McGowan, and they had a live wire who would play anywhere along the front line in Aidan Smith, as well as other threats obviously.

But we nullified these threats quite well and even when it got to the

later stages when Annan were starting to pile players forward I never felt like we were ever in real danger of conceding which is great testament to the whole team.

“Having the game at the Bellslea was a big help and when the home crowd get up it’s hard for any team coming here.”

All eyes then turned to the Fourth Round draw with the prospect of meeting one of the big guns.

“I’m not too sure where to start with this one! I honestly had a gut feeling that something big was going to happen and to be honest this is what I thought It would be. When I saw Rangers get pulled out for a home tie I called it right away - we’re the next team coming out. It turned out to be so and I just burst out laughing. I couldn’t believe it happened again, but it just shows the magic of the Scottish Cup. “I’m so happy for everyone involved with the Club that we have landed the tie that we have.

Firstly for the team and the management who put in countless hours of work through the week and give up so much at weekends - they really do deserve this, but at the end of the day these guys are rewarded when

they get to walk out onto the pitch on a Saturday afternoon and represent such a special club as Fraserburgh. We get all the plaudits when things go well on the pitch and also are well looked after financially so we already are very lucky really.

“The guys behind the scenes will be breathing a sigh of relief that it wasn’t a home tie this time around, hopefully a bit less stressful for them, but they deserve this more than anyone.The board and committee put in just as much work as the playing staff, if not more, doing all the jobs that go unnoticed to most and allow us to play football every weekend so I’m just as happy for them.

“The tie obviously comes with financial implications for the club which will hopefully contribute to the successful running of the club for years to come. Fingers crossed the board and committee and further FFC family can get a good day out at one of Europe’s biggest clubs and enjoy the whole experience.”

Bryan is one of several survivors who played in the previous encounter back in 2018.

“The last time this happened, back in 2018 was a pretty surreal experience. None of us had been

thebroch.online in this position before and really didn’t know what to expect, but it was all brilliant. Phones ringing off the hook, messages daily from anyone and everyone wishing us luck, looking for tickets, asking us to take it easy or get into them depending who you supported!

“When we were told it would be a televised match that just added to the excitement – the whole build up to the match was brilliant, players getting to do things with the press. I remember Eddie and Boomer doing something with Arthur Numan, Willie taking a Sky Sports reporter to the Broch beach for a surf lesson, and there were loads of interviews and reports in various papers, all just brilliant.

“What probably wasn’t ideal was Jamie Beagrie’s offshore rota. He was due to be offshore for the game but managed to get it changed so he would be home for the game on the Sunday. But then of course Mother Nature struck, the game got postponed, and Jamie would again be due offshore for the re-arranged game.

Thankfully he must have a pretty good boss as he was able to get off and play in the match.

“I must also mention the team of staff and supporters who attended the Bellslea to try and clear and defrost the pitch. They were there nearly the whole weekend, working through the night and in freezing conditions to try and get the game on.

Again these kind of gestures show just how much the club means to the community – its pretty humbling really.”

So to the forthcoming match, Bryan believes it comes against a Rangers who are in a better shape than the team we faced back in 2018.

Bryan said, “When we faced

them back then there was a bit of turmoil at the club if I remember correctly. Pedro Caixinha had just been sacked and Graeme Murty was caretaker manager. The team wasn’t performing – they were out of Europe and there was reports that top goal scorer Alfredo Morelos was on his way to China (turns out he was just off to the local Chinese!). But you could say things were far from rosy.

“Compare that to now and I think they are in a better place than they were then.

Things may not be going so well domestically but they are doing quite well in Europe. They have got a team littered with talent and internationals and they also have some good young players playing quite regularly so it will be a massive test for us come gameday.”

Then of course there’s the change of scenery.

“Unfortunately this time we won’t have the Bellslea Park to rely on, a sprawling Ibrox bowling green awaits which could spell disaster for us but it will be a great experience to play on such a quality pitch and I’m sure the guys will rise to the occasion.

“Playing at Ibrox is the thing of dreams and not many people get to say that they have done that. It will be an experience that I will treasure and I’m sure the whole squad will feel the same.

Walking out to potentially forty or fifty thousand will be pretty surreal. The atmosphere has been described as one of the best in Europe at times and the stadium voted as one of, if not the best in the UK with its

famous marble staircase and wood furnishings so these are all things that we get to take in on a match day and to be perfectly honest, I can’t wait.”

There’s little doubt it will be an enormous challenge for the lads but Bryan remains upbeat.

“The hope for the match will be to go out there and give a good account of ourselves. I think we did that quite well the first time around at the Bellslea, although at Ibrox it will be a very different challenge. You would hope that Rangers have an off day and that we could cause the greatest Scottish Cup upset of all time - almost impossible I know but we can all dream.”

“Like I said previously the Rangers squad is littered with talent and internationals so we are going to be majorly up against it. I’ve been really surprised how well Connor Baron has fitted into the team and it looks like he’s Philippe Clement’s main man in midfield.

His partnership with Niko Raskin looks to be going from strength to strength and I’ve been really impressed. I’ve also been really impressed with John Souttar so far this season. Again he looks to be the first choice centre back and he’s been excellent for both club and country. Then you’ve got a legend like James Tavernier who has been out the team recently which shows how well Dujon Sterling has been performing - he’s an absolute machine, I’d liken him to Ross Aitken. In attack, Vaclav Cerny has probably been Rangers bright spark, he looks very accomplished, plenty of pace and knows where the goal is.

“We haven’t even touched on the likes of Butland, Balogun, Jefte, Diomande, Hagi, Bejrami and Dessers - fingers crossed they are all starting on the bench but we have seen first

hand how good the Rangers reserve team can be!”

With almost 570 appearances under his belt, Bryan is well qualified to offer guidance to the younger lads.

“The best advice that I could offer the young team would be to just embrace the whole experience, take it all in, enjoy every second of it because it doesn’t come around very often - usually every 7 years or so!

“They will get a small taste of what its like to be a professional footballer and hopefully they can take that experience and use it as motivation to push on and try to play at the highest level possible.

Of course we want players to stay at FFC but ultimately we also want them to push on and play SPFL football, if not with the Broch then hopefully with someone else.”

The temptation, with such a big occasion on the horizon, may be to become distracted from more immediate matters but Bryan doesn’t feel that will become an issue.

He said, “Hopefully it will be quite easy for the boys to remain focussed from now until January 19th. At the end of the day they are playing for a place in the team and the best way to do that is to be performing week in week out.

“We’ve got a busy run of fixtures coming up and professionalism is going to be key. Recovery, preparation and application are all things that we will need to do well and the best way to look after yourself on the pitch is to give it your all and not start shirking challenges because that’s when players will start to hurt themselves.

“We have a good core of senior players in the squad and hopefully the standards that they regularly set can keep the boys in check and keep training and matchday standards at the highest level.”

A hat-trick from Josh Windass gave Rangers victory over Fraserburgh at Bellslea Park to ensure their passage into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

opening, flicking a neat ball through to Jason Holt who appeared to tread on the ball under challenge from Ryan Cowie.

Windass opened the scoring with a first-half penalty after Ryan Cowie was harshly adjudged to have fouled Jason Holt in the box.

The penalty award was perhaps harsh, but Windass took full advantage as he tucked away the resultant spot kick.

A further two from the Ibrox midfielder in the space of 12 second-half minutes sealed his treble.

The Broch kept their focus and may have had a penalty of their own when Willie West went down under the challenge of Lee Hodson, but referee Greg Aitken waved away the home side’s protestations.

There was further woe for the Broch when substitute Graham Johnston received his marching orders for a foul on Joe Dodoo minutes after entering the play.

It was a great occasion for all involved with Fraserburgh and relief to have got the game played after the postponement of 10 days ago.

A packed Bellslea, filled with around 1,800 supporters, helped generate a wonderful atmosphere in front of the Sky TV cameras.

A Broch win would have been one of the biggest shocks of Scottish Cup history but sadly for the home side it didn’t materialise. They do however deserve enormous credit for making a game of it.

Croatian international Kranjcar carved out an opportunity for himself but his drive from the edge of the box could only skim the top of the crossbar.

Next up was another penalty decision for referee Aitken, but he waved play on as Holt went over following a challenge from the Broch’s Bryan Hay. The home side stuck resolutely to their task and restricted their lofty opponents to few chances.

Krancjar was making his class show and created the visitors’ second goal

when he fed Windass, who slammed it home to extend the lead to two.

The tie was then signed, sealed, and delivered when Windass cut in from the left and completed his hat-trick, striking low past Tait.

Matters became fraught when a lunge on Dodoo by substitute Johnston lead to the Broch man receiving a red card just three minutes after coming off the bench.

So it was Rangers who would progress, but the Broch could take great credit from their efforts.

Fraserburgh manager Mark Cowie said, "The effort over the piece was incredible.

"I've played in that type of game where you're up against top, top opposition. We're playing one of the top sides in the country and it's going to be difficult. Okay, it was 3-0 but there weren't too many clear-cut chances.

"The Fraserburgh fans are great and they turn out in their numbers to support us week in, week out. It's a day for them and a day for the players."

Fraserburgh started offensively, using the trademark Bellslea breeze to great effect as they attempted to put pressure on the visitors.

A Marc Dickson effort went comfortably wide, but the Broch took encouragement from the early signs.

Rangers then began to assert control over the match and started to carve out openings of their own.

Referees are a vital part of football and as the Scottish FA seeks to continually grow and develop the Scottish game, there is a constant need to recruit and develop referees.

Referee Associations locally continue to be looking to welcome new members and to this end, we would invite anyone interested to contact the Association which covers matches in their area.

All football matches require at least a referee and in certain other fixtures also assistant referees. Therefore, new blood is sought on an ongoing basis.

Refereeing can be a highly rewarding challenge, encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle as well as significantly contributing to the development of the game. Referees operate at all levels – from grassroots football right through to the Scottish Professional Football League and international matches.

The Associations run introductory classes; … when numbers are sufficient, on a class based ‘face to face’ basis, which can be tailored to suit candidates … by Zoom which can also be tailored for those interested.

And in addition, there is also an online course which can be

completed at the candidates own pace, in their own surroundings, over 5 modules, with details on the SFA website.

All courses also have a face-toface session for candidates to provide advice on the practicalities of officiating.

MATCHDAY MASCOTS Mascots for the Forres game were brothers Arran, Zachary, and Harris from St Combs. Arran and Zachary play for Link-Up whilst Harris is with Invercairn Juniors.

All three list Willie West as their favourite play 'cos he's oor neighbour!'. A perfect match to be mascot at with it being Willie's 700th game!

Mascots for the Annan cup tie were Kellan McKenzie, who is a goalkeeper for Forfar Athletic 2015s, and Aaron Topping who plays for Link up 2017.

Kellan’s favourite player is Logan Watt and Aaron’s favourites are Logan and Scott Barbour.

The recent batch of fixtures saw two Broch legends reach yet more landmarks for the Club.

First up, as mentioned in our Moments of the Year feature, was captain and Hall-of-Famer Willie West

who achieved the remarkable feat of 700 top team appearances during the visit of Forres Mechanics.

Barbour who made his 400th Broch appearance in our memorable Scottish Cup win over Annan Athletic.

The under 21’s were involved in the last match of the month, they were at home to Turriff United in the Aberdeenshire League, the Broch took the lead in the 11th minute, Liam Strachan beat the fullback, he then fired a left footed shot which went past the keeper into the bottom right corner of the net, Stuart Laird fired a cracking second into the top left corner of the net in the 17th minute, Flynn McKay made it 3 in the 33rd minute, it was 4 nil in the 72nd minute when Hamish Gordon slotted home a penalty, Flynn McKay wrapped up the scoring in the 90th minute, A great result which keeps our 100% record in the Aberdeenshire League intact.

At the start of November the 1st team were away to Grantown on Spey to play Strathspey Thistle, the home team took the lead in the 12th minute, a ball over the Broch defence was controlled by Caelen Mutch, he chipped the ball over Joe Barbour and shepherded it into the net, the Broch were back level in the 15th minute, Logan Watt slotted a ball through the home defence, Greg Buchan ran onto it and squared it across the 6-yard box, Liam Strachan side footed the ball it into the net with his left foot from close range, in the 46th minute the Broch took the lead, Scott Barbour sent in a corner into the box from the right, the home defence failed to clear the danger, Logan Watt stabbed the ball home from 6-yards out with his right foot, the home side were back level in the 59th minute, a corner was sent in from the right and Steven MacDonald powered a header into the net, the Broch had chances to win the game but failed to convert them, well done to Strathspey Thistle who have made

massive improvements since last year and deserved their share of the spoils.

The under 18’s got back to winning ways at Balmoor Stadium in Peterhead when they played Buchanhaven Hearts, the Broch took the lead in the 7th minute when Fergus Ross fired the ball home from the edge of the box, the home side drew level in the 35th minute, just before half-time Alex Gibb restored the Broch lead as he ran onto a Theo Watt through ball and slotted it past the keeper, Evan Anderson made sure of the points when he ran onto a defensive mistake, the keeper came out but he slotted past him with his right foot from 18 yards out, it was great to get back to winning ways and put us level with Turriff United at the top of the table.

The 1st round of the Highland League Cup was next up for the first team, Forres Mechanics were our opponents at the Bellslea, Josh Bolton opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Greg Buchan slots a ball through the Forres defence, Scott Barbour races onto the ball and flicks it away from Patterson, Josh latches onto the loose ball and fires it into the net from 14 yards out with his right foot, the Broch had strong claims for a penalty at the end of the first-half, unfortunately the referee was unsighted and it was not given, Connor Wood made the game safe in the 82nd minute, Paul Young played a long ball up field, Connor ran onto the through ball and moves into the box, he steadies himself and slots the ball past Patterson with his right foot from 10 yards out.

A huge congratulations to Willie West who made his 700th appearance for the

Broch in the Forres game, he is 2nd in the all time appearances for the club and is closing in on Billy Gordon who is in 1st place on 721, Willie made his debut for the Broch on Saturday 22nd November 2003, the Broch were at home to Fort William and we won the game by 5 goals to 1, Willie scored his first goal for the Broch on Saturday 6th May 2006, it was at Kynoch Park Keith when we were playing Cove Rangers in the Highland League Cup final, he has scored 173 goals for the club to date, he is in 4th place in the club all time scorer’s table, all at the supporter’s club would like to thank Willie for the 20 plus years of service to the club, his attitude and fitness levels makes him the perfect role model for our up and coming young players to look up to.

On the Monday night the under 21’s were at home against Deveronvale, once again they were able to keep their 100% record intact, Sean Butcher opened the scoring in the 11th minute after his 3rd attempt, the keeper saved the 1st, the right hand post the 2nd, Sean then slotted home the 3rd, Flynn McKay made it 2 in the 14th minute as the Broch took control, Logan Watt slotted home a 3rd from close range in the 38th minute, Sean Butcher grabbed his second and the Broch’s 4th 2 minutes into the second half, Vale got a goal back before Callum Kelly added more pain in the 54th minute, Hamish Gordon wrapped up the scoring in the 75th minute, another 3 points for the Aberdeenshire League and a fabulous performance.

The 18’s were the only game that was on in their league on the Monday night, the Bellslea’s under soil heating was working like a dream

with a perfect playing surface, we took the lead in the 6th minute when Alex Gibb flicked in to open the scoring, we went 2 up in the 14th minute through Angus Robbie, early in the second half Dyce pulled a goal back after the Broch gifted them the ball in the last third, William Jones added a third goal in the 52nd minute, Kai Benson wrapped up the points in the 73rd minute to send the lads to the top of the league.

The Aberdeenshire Shield game at Keith had to be postponed due to snow on the pitch, we will now travel to Keith on the 18th December with an 8pm kick off.

Annan Athletic came to visit in the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup, it was the best display of the season from the whole squad as we went on to win the game by 2 goals to nil, Connor Wood opened the scoring in the 39th min, Logan Watt moved up field and after beating 2 players he passed the ball to Scott Barbour, Scott jinks his way to the bye line and crosses the ball into the 6-yard box, Connor taps the ball home from 2 yards out with his right foot, it was two nil soon after when Kieran Simpson scored in the 44th min, Scott Barbour sends in a corner from the left wing, Kieran jumps highest and powers a header which flies past Jamie Smith into the centre of the net.

Congratulations to Scott Barbour who made his 400th appearance for the club in the Scottish Cup last Saturday, Scott made his debut for the club on Saturday 16th May 2009 away at Clach, we won the game by 2 goals to 1, the goal scorers were Russell McBride and Mark Dickson, he scored his first goal for the Broch away at Huntly on

Saturday 6th August 2011 in a 3 all draw, Scott is now in 17th place for our all-time appearances, he overtook John “Tosie” Duthie who is on 395 and now looks to pass Dave McKenzie who is on 417, he has scored 269 goals for the club to date, he is in 1st place in the club all time scorer’s table, all at the supporter’s club would like to thank Scott for the 10 plus years of service to the club and hope he continues to find the back of the net in the years to come.

The under 18’s game against Formartine United on the Monday night fell foul of the wet weather and will now be played at a later date.

It was better news later on the Monday, the Broch have drawn Rangers away at Ibrox Stadium on Sunday 19th January in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup 4th round, it’s a fabulous chance for the players and management to play at the top level of Scottish football, well done to you all and we all hope you enjoy this wonderful occasion, you certainly deserve it, I’m sure the committee and board are happy that it’s an away tie.

For those who are still interested, Zander Smith has scoffed his 98th match day pie to date this year, 2 pies at the Broch United game helped the total along, not sure if Ibrox sell pies, maybe caviar and chips for him down there.

The Supporters club membership is now sitting at 245 members, this is a new record for the club, we would like to thank you all for the continued support that you have given us over this season.

We will be running a bus to the Buckie game on Saturday 7th December which will leave the Elizabethan at 12:45pm, the cost of travel is £10 for adults and £5 for others.

We will also be running a bus to the Huntly game on Wednesday 11th December which will leave the Elizabethan at 6:15pm, the cost of travel is £10 for adults and £5 for others.

We will also be running a bus to the Brechin game on Saturday 21st December which will leave the Elizabethan at 10:00am, the cost of travel is £20 for adults and £10 for others.

Please note that all seats on all buses must be booked by contacting Barry Walker at the supporter’s club.

We hope to attract new members to the supporter’s club as we have kept our membership and bus prices at the same cost as last year.

Non members are also very welcome to travel to games but they will have to pay an extra £2.

MEET the ref

Harry Bruce

one night and they were short of referees for one of the games so I jumped in. I enjoyed it more than I thought i would and after that gave the course a bash.

Favourite ground to officiate at?

A tough one to decide. I enjoy games at Bellslea and Victoria Park when there’s a big game and crowd, the post match pizza at Bellslea maybe just wins it!

The Haughs is a decent ground too and the changing room for us is massive so that’s always a bonus.

What is your job outside of football?

I’m in the Police. Currently working in Keith/Buckie.

How long have you been refereeing for?

I’ve been refereeing for 12 years now, this is my seventh season in the Highland League. Time absolutely flies…

First match you can remember refereeing?

My first competitive match was a Moray Welfare fixture, a brutal eye opener to refereeing at 16 years old!

Why did you start refereeing?

My dad also referees (he still tries to), I had been along watching him at Elgin Boys Club

Best refereeing moment?

I was appointed to the Scottish Youth Cup Final in 2022 at Hampden Park between Hearts and Rangers. To get chosen for a national final, live on BBC was a great achievement and memory for me. It’s just a shame I kept my Covid haircut and ran about the park with a ridiculous looking mullet.

If you were given the chance to create or amend a rule, what would you choose?

Booking players for removing their shirts... never got that one!

Is there anything at all you think we as clubs could change to encourage more people to become referees?

It’s a route that could be encouraged for players coming to

an end at their clubs. I played with Elgin City throughout my youth but I knew I was never going to make it to first team level. Thankfully, through refereeing I’ve had chances to get involved in leagues and cups I would never have reached with my playing ability. Its certainly something players young and old should consider.

Any pre match rituals or superstitions?

Not for me, although many would say I've made it a ritual to turn up late.

One piece of advice to a new referee?

Get involved and turn up to as much as you can. You get out refereeing what you put in. It’s a fair commitment with games, training and meetings but the more you get involved, the better the rewards.

Best piece of advice you were given?

I would struggle to pick one bit of advice, there’s been so many experienced guys pass on advice and coaching over the years and listening to the advice they give will always help you to improve.

Bailey Bannerman How long have you been watching the Broch for ?

I have been watching home games since I was 5 then a couple of years later I started going to away games too.

Which part of the ground do you like watching from?

I like watching the games from behind the opposition’s goal so I can closely see all of the Broch’s chances and goals.

What makes it more attractive than watching bigger teams on TV? The action is live and you get to experience the atmosphere.

Do you support any other teams?

I support Aberdeen and Liverpool.

If you could change one thing around football at any level what would it be?

Get rid of VAR.

Best Broch game you have been to and why?

When we beat Forres Mechanics 5-0 to win the League.

have had FFC manager Mark Cowie and Matty West come along and deliver training sessions at Kessock Park Thistle FC.

Worst?

When we lost 3-1 to Bonnyrigg Rose in the play-off at New Dundas Park.

How would you improve the match day experience at the Bellslea?

Personally I don't think this could be improved at the moment as I feel the club has come a long way in the last few years with all the improvements made, like the sheltering and the new pavement areas.

Who are your favourite Broch players and why?

My favourite players are Fig because he's good on the ball and also knows how to strike a ball well. Also Keiran Simpson because he is solid at the back.
