management team any targets. Mark and the guys will have their own targets and we know they will be doing their utmost to achieve those. We have complete faith in the coaching staff and players to do their very best for the club; and at our level that is all we can ask given the huge amounts of outside influences like work, family life, illness etc that can have an affect on an individual which may have a direct effect on their performance on any given match.

For me, that is a very satisfying year. I am sure Mark Cowie will say we should have done better than that, but we don’t set Mark and the rest of the

We were thrilled to be witness to Scott Barbour becoming the clubs all-time record goal scorer when he overcame the record of 237 goals held by

Happy New Year everyone and wishing you all a healthy and prosperous 2024. Over the course of 2023 we played 40 games, winning 27 and losing only 9. We scored 107 goals and conceded 45. Winning the Aberdeenshire Shield along the way.

Michael Stephen. Michael himself broke Davie Robertson’s 210 goals in November 2006. I am not one for comparing generations as things are always different during different times, but I can say that having seen them all I couldn’t split them up and have thoroughly enjoyed watching them banging in goals for the team I support. Everyone will have an opinion on who their favourite is but it is an argument that has no wrong answer. Off the park, we have had a new set of LED Floodlights installed, with huge thanks to Score Group for helping to fund these alongside the grant we received from Vattenfall. We have also launched our official club Tartan which has already proved popular. Sadly, as is it in life unfortunately, we have lost some weel-kent faces and lifelong supporters of the club who have passed on. Our thoughts go to those left behind and it is important for us, as custodians of the club, that we keep the club going as strongly as possible to keep those memories alive for future generations. It is often easy to forget how much a football club

means to their community and we are no different. Time moves on though and we look ahead to 2024 with hope and belief as we always do. We already have a Cup Final to look forward to on 30th March and we are still in the mix for the league and Aberdeenshire Cup. Some of you will be recipients of my periodic fixture updates by email, but for some reason I cannot send to anyone with a Gmail account. I am guessing it is down to volume of recipients and the system thinking it is SPAM. If you have a Gmail account and would still like to receive these then please can you forward me an alternative address. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of everyone at the club to thank all our Supporters, Official Partners, Sponsors and Advertisers for their continued support over the past year. You have been brilliant. Come awa the Broch Finlay

THE MANAGER

MARK COWIE 8

Overall, it has been a bit of a frustrating month. We were scheduled to play the League Cup Final on the opening weekend, but the complete fixture card was wiped out due to bad weather. We were a bit disappointed with this as I felt we were in good shape for the game however it was put back until 2024 which gives us something to look forward to. We then had an away trip to play Lossiemouth. These games are always difficult and Lossie were on a good run especially at home where they hadn’t tasted defeat since September. I felt we played okay on the whole but I am always looking to do better. We had a lot of the ball in the first half without really doing much with it. I think despite all of our possession of the ball, we only really carved out one chance which their keeper saved. I am not interested one bit in possession of the ball. Possession is only relevant to me if you do something purposeful with it. Possession should always be a lead up to a scoring opportunity. I spoke to the guys at half time and asked them to move the ball quicker and forward as opposed to sideways or back. To be fair to them they did to start with the second period and our talisman Scott Barbour scored the game’s only goal to give us a 1-0 victory and a precious 3 points. This goal for Scott took him equal with Michael Stephen but a

week later things were to get even better. We then took on Inverurie Locos at home, who were now under the stewardship of Dean Donaldson who had moved on from Turriff United to take the Locos manager job. New managers always seem to get a reaction so the players were well warned that we would need to play better to get anything and we did. We again controlled the game and managed to get ahead through a good Ryan Sargent strike. Locos came out to have a go in the second half and managed to get an equaliser but we quickly regained the lead again through Ryan Sargent. Locos once again pegged us back when we lost our way a bit but Jamie Beagrie managed the get our noses in front once more. At this stage I thought we should have been in a more comfortable position as our play was good and we created numerous chances but just couldn’t get that killer goal. Then it came and it was a goal which wrote itself in to the history books. Logan Watt played a ball through the defence which looked to be covered, however a slip meant that Scott Barbour was bearing down on their goal, at the iconic garage end too. He took his shot early which seemed to deceive the keeper and the ball found its way in to the bottom corner of the net to take Scott out on his own as the record goalscorer for Fraserburgh FC.

Wild celebrations ensued, including myself who received a caution from the match referee for stepping a bit outside the technical area. It was all worth it as we all celebrated the achievement Scott had just rubber stamped. I celebrate every goal my team score as I am passionate for the game. I do not do it to disrespect any opposition or and other person, I simply do it out of the love for the game and I think all those involved with sport should respectfully celebrate successes. Anyway I ended up down the touchline to celebrate with Scott which didn’t go down too well with certain people but again no disrespect was intended, I just did it out of pure joy for Scott and his family. I have seen closer than most the work Scott puts in to his game. He has natural, raw talent but a work ethic which stands him above many of his peers. Scott celebrates goals in training as much as he does in cup finals or league games. His desire to score never fades no matter what the surroundings. He is an exceptional talent, one of which I am honoured to have both played alongside and now managed. So to him, Savannah, Rio and his extended family I congratulate you all on an accomplishment which has taken real dedication, but is now his to own for a long time. He will be the first to admit that it doesn’t stop here and I have already given him a new target to aim for. We then had a big one on the cards with an away trip to Buckie scheduled for 23rd December but once more the rain got the better of us and the match was postponed. That meant that we would take the curtain down for 2023 with a home game against Keith. Firstly, I must take this time to commend the groundsmen who played a vital part in getting this game on. As we all know Bobby has taken a back seat as of late to concentrate on himself for a change, but that hasn’t meant that the ball has been dropped. Brian, Stewart, John and the rest have continued Bobby’s unbelievable work to make sure we have the platform to play our games on. We started the game really well, in fact I thought the first 45 minutes was up there with

the best we have played this season. We moved the ball well – quickly and forward which I ask of them. Paul Young and Greg Buchan in midfield showed great stamina to run the game, Scott looked like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders and linked up really well with Ryan Sargent and Connor Wood. We scored two great goals in the first half, especially Scott’s first one which was a real reminder of the goals the man he just took over from, Michael Stephen, used to score. Keith changed their shape in the second half and played more defensively which changed the game slightly. We controlled it, however only managed to add one more to the tally. A convincing 3-0 win to see out the year and act as a starting block to 2024. Finally I would once again like to thank all the fans for their continued support of the team in 2023. We managed to get another trophy in the cabinet and have another final to look forward to in 2024. Thanks to my backroom team who work tirelessly as ever, the players who put up with my constant requests to maintain standards and ask for more from them and to all the committee, directors, volunteers who all come together everyday to make sure that Fraserburgh FC continues going forward and allowing us to play the game we love and hopefully entertain those watching. Happy New Year and all the very best for 2024.

THE CAPTAIN

WILLIE WEST 12

December 2023, the month where Scott Barbour equalled and broke the goalscoring record previously held by Michael Stephen. I’ve had the privilege to play alongside both of these legends and was personally delighted for Scott as he has worked so hard over the years to get to where he is today. I am sure he is incredibly proud of the achievement but will still have desire to extend the record as far as possible. Fig’s goal at Lossiemouth was very important to the team to allow us to seal a one nil win where we struggled to break down a very organised back line, but one which we more than deserved. I think we played some good football but we were limited to good chances either due to our final pass or Lossiemouth’s desire to defend their goal. My recollection of the game was most of it was played in the opposition half but also an impressive

performance from Josh Boulton. We had hoped to play the Highland League Cup Final a week later but unfortunately due to weather it was cancelled. At least it was cancelled the day before so the squad could enjoy the time with families and friends. Something we will now look forward to later in the season. Next up was league duty at home to Inverurie Locos and I always thought this would be a tough one and it proved to be the case. Ryan Sargent had a good tussle with Locos defender Mark Souter but ended up with 2 goals adding to his improving goal tally, but the icing on the cake was made when that man Scott Barbour sealed the game with the 4th and broke the alltime goal record. A phenomenal achievement and one where you could see the whole squad was chuffed for him, sharing in his celebration. There was a brief moment in the game where

we could have been behind at 2-2 but we stuck to the task and in the end deserved the win. Jamie Beagrie bagging a goal as well. Our annual Team night out followed the Locos game where the players enjoyed a quiet night out for our Christmas doo. Don’t have any misdemeanours to report I’m afraid as it was a rather uneventful but enjoyable evening with a trip to BrewDog followed by a few pubs around town, at least that is what I remembered! The players fine money and notable contributions from the management team being well spent! Big shout out to Ross Aiken who takes care of the fines and holds us all to account. Top man. Following 4 wins on the bounce we were looking forward to the Buckie game but weather won that day and it was cancelled. Last up was Keith and after some terrible weather during the week the

groundstaff were able to get the game on. A big credit to all the guys there as most fixtures in the league had to be cancelled. Our 1st half performance was very professional and some of our passing was excellent allowing us to be 2 nil up at halftime. Fig and Sarge combining for the 1st and a great assist from Paul Young for Fig to smash one in. The pitch understandably dug up and in the 2nd half we didn’t manage to match our 1st half performance. But the game was sealed when a good move down the right with Lewis Davidson picking out Scott Barbour to get his 2nd of the game. Not enough for MOM though with Joe Barbour picking it up following his clean sheet. We are now on a good run and need to maintain the momentum into January if we are to get back in the mix with 12 points up for grabs against, Vale, Clach, Turriff and Wick. Willie

Our Top Moment of 2023 comes at Kynoch Park, Keith. After edging ahead through a Scott Barbour counter, Buckie Thistle pull things back via Sam Pugh.

THE HEAD OF YOUTH

MATTHEW WEST 22

December sees only one game as our U18s let a 2goal lead slip against a battling Huntly with the game finishing 2-2. Despite disappointment in the score line it was great for Angus Robbie & Theo Watt to get first goals for us and we hope this will bring further confidence for the new year. We were delighted to get feedback that talented U18s youngster Flynn Mckay has been selected for Scottish Schools FA

Squad to play in the upcoming Centenary Shield Competition. Flynn’s commitment and attitude has been exemplary throughout ‘23 and this is a terrific achievement. We hope he can do well and this will enhance his development here at the Broch. Off the park the players have been hugely generous in supporting the local foodbank with donations to help families amid the pressures that winter

and

in

particular,

Christmas can bring.

more.

We were chatting with our U18s squad during our sessions over the festivities about being ready as a group for 2024.

We look forward to supporting the group through the journey.

This will be a demanding year for these guys further transitioning into adult life, pushing for results in exams, some the start of career, some may leave home, further expectation for guys already in work, driving lessons, maybe 1st holiday without their mothers and for sure many highs and lows to endure. As coaches we are selfish and from a football perspective we must push on equipped from the six months past - to do well, do better, do

The club is in a strong place on all fronts and its vital that we drive the standards shown and example set by Management and Directors. We are under no pressure from out with the dressing room, but we must put on each other. Pressure to realise how important the youth set up is to the long-term success of the club and the opportunity guys have here at the Broch. All the best. Thanks - Matthew

CHARLIE'S FINISHED - BUT DAVE'S BACK! "I enjoyed it - but the party's over". That's the reaction from Fraserburgh manager Charlie Duncan to his 35-minute comeback, off the subs bench, at the age of 43.

"The standard cannot be as good as it was when I was able to reasonably get away with it for over half an hour", says the Broch boss. "That's me definitely finished playing competitively." Charlie's youngsters have done him proud by reaching the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Shield final, their second final of the season, despite an appalling injury catalogue. Dave Robertson's return, a year after breaking his leg and missing their Scottish Cup campaign, is a lift to Fraserburgh - and a tribute to the courage and perseverance of 'Robbo'. John Thomson, however, injured in a pre-season friendly is making slow progress from his knee operation and will not play until 1992.

Duncan's appearance at Nairn is a modern-day record for longevity though it is alleged that ex-Ranger Bobby Bolt played for Caley in the early 50s at the ripe old age of 48.

On a brighter note, Duncan is excited by the potential of his new striker, 21year-old Graham Alexander from Ellon United. "He's raw but he's extremely strong", says Charlie. "Opposing managers are quick to ask me who he is..."

CHRISTMAS ‘GIFT’ FOR JOHN?

The pace and flair of wee John Thomson, the Fraserburgh raider, have been badly missed this season. John has seen a specialist about his cartilage trouble and now has set his sights on a comeback by Christmas. Dave Robertson has had a knee ligaments operation, the sequel to whiplash damage caused when he broke his leg in an accident at work a year ago.

Broch's other 'crock', Keith McCreadie, is walking normally again after his start of season ankle break, but manager Charlie Duncan expects a winter of mixed results from his young team. "I'm giving the young lads their chance - and we'll get some daft results because of this", he explains. "We could even finish in the bottom five if we keep getting exposed. But it's a risk I'm happy to take, so that experience can be gained."

MATCH ACTION

December sees a month of League action as we round out 2023 with three victories.

Scott Barbour celebrates his record-equalling goal Fraserburgh manager Mark Cowie paid tribute to striker Scott Barbour as he grabbed the only goal of the game to defeat Lossiemouth 1-0 and go level with Michael Stephen as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

knew it was going to be difficult as Frank McGettrick is a very good coach.”

Both players have netted 237 goals for the Broch and Cowie said “It’s been a while coming and hopefully, he can break the record soon so he can relax a bit more. But he’s an unbelievable player and I could spend a whole night going on about his accolades and how important he is to the club.”

The only goal in a game of few clear-cut chances came three minutes after the break. Josh Bolton and Aidan Sopel created the opening for Barbour to turn his marker in the box and fire home from 10 yards and write another moment of history in his career.

“While he hasn’t been hitting the heights of his career recently, he is still in my mind the best striker in the league and we are delighted he is in our side. This was a hard earned three points, you just have to look at Lossie’s results not having dropped points at home since September, so we

FRASERBURGH 4-2 INVERURIE LOCO WORKS Breedon Highland League| Saturday 16th December 2023

34

Fraserburgh continued their good recent form with a 4-2 win over Inverurie Loco Works in a thrilling encounter at Bellslea Park. Broch boss Mark Cowie was pleased to pick up all three points. He said, “we were a shade lucky to go into the break ahead, but I thought we were much better after the break, took our chances and deserved the win. Scott Barbour for me has been the best striker in the League over the past 10 years. He’s a dream to work with, his desire to improve and play for this club is unbelievable, hopefully he will go on and stretch the record as far as he can.” The Broch took the lead on 33 minutes when Ryan Sargent beat the Locos offside trap and drove into the box before drilling the ball past on-loan keeper Blessing Oluyemi at the near post. Locos levelled four minutes after the break when Broch keeper Joe Barbour raced out of his area to clear the ball, but it fell straight to Locos captain Greg Mitchell who curled the ball home into an empty net from 40 yards.

The home side regained the lead on 56 minutes when good work on the right flank by Aidan Sopel saw him pull the ball back to Sargent who had his first effort brilliantly saved by Oluyemi, but the Broch striker managed to head the rebound high into the net. The visitors kept battling and levelled again four minutes later when Myles Gaffney was released on the right channel and outpaced the Broch defence to fire the ball past Barbour from 14 yards. The Broch took the lead for a third time with 13 minutes remaining. A long free kick whipped into the box by Ryan Cowie caused panic in the Locos defence and Jamie Beagrie capitalised to force the ball home from close range. A minute later they extended their lead with a historic goal. Logan Watt sent Scott Barbour clear on goal and he coolly swept the ball past Oluyemi for his 238th goal for the club to break Fraserburgh legend Michael Stephen’s all-time goalscoring record of 237 goals. FRASERBURGH 3-0 KEITH

Breedon Highland League| Saturday 30thrd December 2023

Ryan Sargent turns home to put the Broch into the lead

36

Fraserburgh ended 2023 with a comfortable 3-0 victory over a dogged Keith side. The hosts were well worth the three points which delighted boss Mark Cowie. He said, “the first 45 minutes was the best we’ve played in a long time.” “We caused them problems with our pace in wide areas and with the movement of our front three.” Paul Young was the best player on the park, dictating play, getting the ball forward and we deserved to go in 2-0 at the break.” “Second half we didn’t kick on as much and Keith changed their shape to nullify our wide players, but our passing wasn’t as crisp, maybe that had something to do with the conditions as the wind got worse.” This time of year, is so stop start, so I’ve got to be delighted as we scored three excellent goals, we got a clean sheet and we never came under any real pressure.” “We now move on to another difficult game at Deveronvale next week.” The Broch were on the front foot from the start and the visitor’s young keeper, Connor

Macleod did well to tip away a curling Connor Wood shot in the first minute. The home side made the breakthrough on 28 minutes when Scott Barbour fired in a cross the left flank and Ryan Sargent flicked the ball past the Keith keeper into the net. Nine minutes later they increased their lead when Paul Young threaded a through ball into the path of Barbour who unleashed a left foot cracker high past the Maroons goalkeeper at his near post. The Broch striker almost made it three just before the break but Macleod saved his effort. The wind increased in the second half making conditions difficult for the players, but a great passage of play just after the hour saw Lewis Davidson release Wood on the right wing and his pull back picked out Barbour who slammed the ball home from 14 yards. Two minutes later Davidson set up Josh Bolton who was unlucky to see his shot cannon off the crossbar. Full Time Fraserburgh 3 Keith 0

December saw a busier month for our matchday activities as we hosted Inverurie Locos and Keith at the Bellslea. Firstly, we welcomed Kessock Park Thistle 2012’s to the Bellslea on a lovely December day. Boys and girl were a pleasure to have. Some cracking teamwork on display and some future players. Also at the Locos game were mascots Harper and Kai, who took the opportunity for a photo-shoot alongside their heroes. The month was rounded off with a visit from Keith. We welcomed Rohan and Jay as mascots for the day. We hope you all enjoyed your day as much as we enjoyed hosting you!

North Scottish Area 140 Boys Brigade Baton handover Prior to our match with Inverurie Locos on December 16th, the North Scottish Area 140 Baton was on the Bellslea pitch where 4th & 5th Fraserburgh BB handed over the Baton to 1st Sandhaven BB. The BB recorded thanks to FFC Chairman Finlay Noble for hosting them at the Bellslea. Finlay, along with our Treasurer Stephen Sim, is a former boy and leader.

FRASERBURGH FIRST RESPONDERS We also recently hosted the Fraserburgh First Responders at the Bellslea who carried out a training session for the Walking Football Group. The use of a Defibrillator and CPR were practised. This was after one of their players collapsed on the field. Three of the team who already had these vital skills were able to put them into action. This gave the gentleman a fighting chance until the Emergency services sprang into action. We are very pleased to say the he left hospital just after Christmas to continue his recovery. Very humbling to see how the walking football group rallied round over the past few months to support the gentleman and his family.

The Changing Room: Fraserburgh The Changing Room has one goal – to promote men’s mental health and wellbeing through the power of the beautiful game. Fraserburgh FC and Fraserburgh In The Community are delighted to bring The Changing Room to the Bellslea for its first intake of the innovative 12 week course that invites men to step down from the stands, into the heart of their club, to take action for their mental health. The project targets men in their middle years (aged 3064) and works to help guys better self-manage their own mental health and support one another, as part of a team. These sessions are a chance to get away from the everyday stresses we deal with and chat about football and mental health at the home of the club. We all love a blether about the football, whether it’s prematch tactics, the team selection, or post-match analysis with your pals. But men also need to get the stuff that’s bothering them off their chests. The Changing Room is here for them. The Changing Room is a SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) project that works in partnership with SPFL Trust and football club charities and trusts across Scotland. It is funded by the global men’s health charity, Movember.

Fraserburgh FC will be the first Highland League club to introduce this life changing program, however it has been taking place at Aberdeen FC since October 2021 and since then there has been 7 different cohorts of men that have attended the 12-week program with a positive outcome in their personal, work and friendship relationships. There are 16 spaces available for this group of men to participate; this exciting course uses football and a variety of activities each week to help men tackle their mental health. If you are keen to sign up or would like to find out more, please complete the application below and a member of our team will be in touch in due course. Start Date – Tuesday 30th January (every Tuesday thereafter for 12 weeks) Where – Fraserburgh In The Community Matchday Portacabin, Bellslea Session Time – 6.30pm-8pm

FRASERBURGH FC SUPPORTERS CLUB NEWS All at the Broch Supporters club would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

52

We were at home to Stonehaven in the under 21’s Aberdeenshire League on the last Monday of November, the Broch went 1 nil up in the 32nd minute, a Callum Kelly shot was blocked and a Zane Laird shot went straight to Sean Butcher who diverted the ball into the net with his left foot, Zane Laird made it 2 from the penalty spot in the 41st minute which finished the first half scoring, it was 3 in the 48th minute, Alan Henderson sent a long ball forward to Sean Butcher, he volleyed the ball off the underside of the bar into the net, Stonehaven managed to get goals back in the 63rd and 84th minute to leave a nervy finish to the game, another 3 points to the lads which keeps them in contention at the top with Turriff United. Late on in the Stonehaven game Zane Laird dislocated his shoulder, all at the club wish him a speedy recovery from this injury and hope to see him banging in the goals early in the New Year. We were going to be running buses to the Brora Rangers Cup Final game at Inverurie on Sunday 3rd December, due to a frosty pitch that game was postponed on the Saturday afternoon, the cup final will now take place on the 30th March in the new year at Harlaw Park Inverurie. We were on our travels once again to Lossiemouth, we controlled the game and never let Lossie see much of the ball, after the first half ended blank Scott Barbour lifted the mood in the 48th minute, Greg Buchan flicked the ball over the defence on the right-hand side to Josh Bolton, he passed the ball into the feet of Scott Barbour, he took touches with his left then right foot, his shot from 8 yards out was

blocked slightly by Ryan Farquhar, the ball went into the right-hand side of the net, it was a big goal which won the game and Scott has now equalled Michael Stephen on the 237 goals for the club mark, it must be just a matter of time before he breaks the record. Well done to Joe Barbour who had his third clean sheet in a row in the Lossie game. Congratulations must also go to our very own Zander Smith who scoffed his 100th pie for the season at the Lossiemouth game, it was a Steak pie with no tomato sauce slavered over it as is usually the case, oor Zander is adaptable and will eat Macaroni, Mince, Chicken (feathers on or off), Sausage roll or even a Burger or a Hot Dog when required, all Highland League Clubs love seeing him walk through their doors as they know the tea stall is going to do well, Longside, Maud and the Broch United in the Junior ranks also look forward to his visit’s, Deveronvale once forgot to order pies for a game, he had to settle for a custard slice, the puzzling part was weather to put tomato or broon sauce on it, well done Zander as you single handedly try to keep the pie shops in the Highland League profitable. Our next game was at home to Inverurie Locos in the League, it was great to be back at the Bellslea since we hadn’t had a home game since 28th October when we played Bonnyrigg Rose in the Scottish Cup, it was a tight first half but we were happy to take the lead in the 33rd minute, Ryan Cowie fired a long ball over the Locos defence, Ryan Sargent runs onto the ball and then fires a left foot shot past Blessing Oluyemi from 10 yards out which goes in to the left side of the net, Locos equalized early in the second half, the Broch retook the lead when Joe Barbour

sent a freekick forward for Aidan Sopel to run onto, he cuts the ball back into the box for Ryan Sargent whose shot is blocked by Blessing Oluyemi, the ball spins up into the air and Ryan heads the rebound into the net, Locos equalized again in the 59th minute, but the Broch took a grip of the game in 78th minute, Ryan Cowie swung in a freekick from the right, the ball is headed on by Kieran Simpson and is blocked on the line, the ball comes out to Jamie Beagrie who fires the ball into the net, the moment the Bellslea faithful had been waiting for happened 1 minute later, Connor Wood won the ball in midfield, he flicks the ball on to Logan Watt, the ball is then slotted through to Scot Barbour who flicks it past Mark Souter, he then steadies and slots the ball past the keeper from 20 yards out with his left foot, a huge goal for Scott as he passes Michael Stephen and becomes the Broch’s all time top scorer with 238 goals, Scott, the players, coaching staff and supporters go crazy. A fabulous 3 points but a game which will be remembered for a very special moment in the history of Fraserburgh FC, well done Scott, a fantastic achievement. The under 18’s were playing their last game of the calendar year on the 18th December against Huntly, the Broch opened the scoring in the 9th minute, Huntly failed to clear properly from a corner and Flynn McKay was on hand to fire the ball into the net, just before half-time the Broch doubled their advantage, the ball was swung into the box and Stuart Laird was on hand to fire the ball into the net, a mix up at the back let Huntly back into the game on 60 minutes, they drew level in the 70th minute with a fast break up the park, there was no more scoring in the game which felt like 2 points dropped at full time. We were all prepared for our visit to Buckie on the penultimate Saturday of the month, unfortunately once again the weather put the game off on the Saturday morning. The last game of the year had Keith coming to call at the Bellslea, Ryan

Sargent broke the deadlock in the 27th min, Scott Barbour got to the bye line and cut the ball into the 6-yard box, Ryan flicks the ball past Connor Macleod into the bottom right corner of the net with his left foot. It was 2 nil in the 36th minute, Paul Young slotted the ball through for Scott to run onto, he blasts the ball past the keeper high into the left side of the net from 14 yards out. On the 63rd minute the game was secured, Lewis Davidson drives forward and slots the ball through to Connor Wood, he crosses the ball into the box from the right side, Scott Barbour turned and fired a left foot shot into the net from 14 yards out. It was another solid performance to end the year in 5th place in the league. The draw for the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Shield took place after the Keith game, we have been drawn away to Huntly on Wednesday 24th January in the first round, bus details will follow in the New Year. We will be running a bus to the Deveronvale game on Saturday 6th January, the bus will leave the Elizabethan at 11:30pm, the cost of travel is £8 for adults and £5 for others. We will also be running a bus to the Turriff game on Saturday 20th January which will leave the Elizabethan at 1:15pm, the cost of travel is £8 for adults and £5 for others. Please note that all seats on all buses must be booked by contacting Barry Walker at the supporter’s club. We hope to attract new members to the supporter’s club as we have kept our membership and bus prices at the same cost as last year. Non members are also very welcome to travel to games but they will have to pay an extra £2. Our bus info page will tell you the cost and times of bus travel, we leave for home right after the final whistle. Visit FFCSC online at http://www.fraserburghfcsc.co.uk Ten Nil

MEMORY MATCH CUP OF WOE FOR HUNTLY AS BROCH HIT FORM Fraserburgh 3-1 Huntly Aberdeenshire Cup Final | Saturday 27th March 1976| Bellslea Park

FRASERBURGH - Charlie Gray, Ian Sharp, Raymond Cardno, Dave McKenzie, Kenny Roger, John Duthie, Murdo Watson, Rex Hunter, Brian Newlands, Gibby Stephen, Bertie Bowie. subs - Bobby Fraser, Billy Massie

FRASERBURGH romped into a three-goal lead against Huntly in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final at Bellslea Park. They outplayed Huntly and a controversial penalty award which led to a goal by McKenzie appeared to be the final clincher.

HUNTLY - Cooper, Gerrard, Borzoni, Raffan, Finnie, Watson, Chalmers, Laws, Simpson, Donald, McBain. subs McKenzie, Johnston

Only a minute before the kick-off came news that Huntly inside man Jim Dalziel's mother has died suddenly in Aberdeen. Jimmy, who had been changing, withdrew from the side and returned home immediately. Ian Chalmers came into the

Referee - WD Reid, Aberdeen

team with the referee giving permission for the team line to be altered. A minute's silence was observed for ex-Huntly official Dave Warnock, a past president of the Aberdeenshire FA, who died last week. Ken Roger's first tackle after his 14 day's suspension earned him a lecture for a foul on McBain. Finnie's neat free kick just evaded Donald's toe. Watson was not far away with a 25 yarder as Fraserburgh, played into a stiff breeze, started strongly. A Hunter drive flashed across the face of the goal after a good pass from McKenzie In nine minutes Roger was booked for a simple tackle on Raffan and the 1500 fans voiced their dissent. Newlands was prominent and continued to stretch the visiting defence. A beautiful five-man movement ended with McKenzie hitting the side netting. Fraserburgh were showing why they are league leaders with some aggressive raiding and Huntly were living dangerously.

and was surrounded by defenders. But Newlands cleverly held the ball until McKENZIE raced up in support and sent a long drive well away from Cooper. COMPLIMENT McKenzie almost returned the compliment with a great pass but the ball skidded off Newlands head. Then a swirling chip from McKenzie saw Cooper just push it over the bar. Broch had their tails up and piled on the pressure. Their tactic of keeping Hunter on the wing away from the double stoppers was successful and it was Newlands who was giving Watson a very tough time with some sparkling footwork. McKenzie set up a fine chance in 39 minutes but Hunter blazed it just over the bar. Laws was trying to get the Huntly attack going but found little response.

Huntly gradually came forward a couple of times to cause confusion in the home rearguard.

In a fierce Fraserburgh burst, Huntly's Watson booted off the line from his Broch namesake then Cooper made an aerobatic save to stop a Bowie cross reaching Newlands. Simpson almost sneaked a shock equaliser when his lob foxed Gray but ran just past an empty net.

Huntly were caught napping in 26 minutes. McKenzie sent a long cross to Newlands who had his back to goal

Newlands had a score chalked off for offside then headed a sharp free kick inches past as Broch ended the half

63

still dominating. Huntly's chances of winning the cup for the first time in 15 years and completing Jim Gerrard's medal collection looked slim at this stage. Cooper had a good close range save from Newlands just on the whistle. (Half-time: 1-0) Broch went two up in 47 minutes when BOWIE intercepted a Cardno pass 20 yards out to rocket home a beauty. FLAT OUT

64

Cooper needed two tries to stop a scorching free kick from Rogers as the home side went flat out for more. But it took a good tackle by Sharp to foil Simpson as Huntly refused to give in.

McBain went off in 60 minutes to be replaced by McKenzie. Broch clinched victory in 61 minutes. Hunter went down in a tackle with Watson and the referee awarded a penalty. Gerrard was booked as Huntly protested by McKENZIE made no mistake with the spot kick. STOP PRESS: Huntly were to pull a goal back in the latter stages of the match but it wasn't enough to prevent the Broch claiming the Aberdeenshire Cup for the sixth time. FAN FOCUS

GORDON BISSET When did you start watching Fraserburgh? Can you remember your first game? Forres at the Bellslea, about 1958. I remember Don Emery aboot burstin the net with a penalty, think it wis 7-0. Which part of the ground do you go in and why? Any friends you want to mention? Front of the stand wi Zander Whyte and a few others, we enjoy the banter and comedy, but you are nae allowed to throw pies at the linesman noo a days. Best games and why? When the Broch won the league at Cove 2002. Also, beating Peterheid at the Bellslea 2-1 December 1975, 2 late goals from Tozy. Fine Fare wis selt oot o Gancia after the game. Broch 1-0 Dundee in the cup is still in the memory of us older fans.

Zander and Gordon having coffee (for a change) at the Rothes Social Club a few weeks ago. (They ’d nae Gancia).

Worst game and why? When we lost the League play-off at Elgin, 21 to Nairn in 1976. The Broch had such a good team back then. Favourite Fraserburgh player of all time and why? John Duthie ( Tozy). He wis a class act at the heart of the defence with great pace. A character that the Broch fans loved. Favourite current player? Scott Barbour (Fig). There is a few, but I will say Fig. His goal scoring record speaks for itself and if things are not going well he still runs his heart oot. If you could sign one HFL player for the Broch who would it be? Lachie McLeod of Bunks o’ Dee.

Your all-time Fraserburgh XI? Manager: Charlie Duncan Billy Gordon, Derek Milne, John Duthie (Tozy), Russell McBride, Jimmy Young, Ian Murray, Kevin Norris, Scott Murray, Michael Stephen, Scott Barbour, Bertie Bowie. Subs: Neil Clark, John Whyte, Brian Newlands, Brian Hay, Jim Crawford, Davie McKenzie, Gilbert Stephen, Jamie Beagrie, Dennis Forsyth, Davie Robertson, Rexy Hunter Thing you like best about the Club? A friendly and well run club. Any other club you support? The Dons and Aston Villa.

Favourite Highland League ground apart from Bellslea? Seafield Park, Grantown (where I was born). One thing you'd like to change about football? Some of the refs love to blow their whistle at the most trivial infringement, they should try and let the game flow. Thank goodness there is nae VAR in the Highland League .

Who's going to win the league this season? Don't like to say this, Buckie.
