FROM THE CHAIRMAN FINLAY NOBLE If you have any ideas or suggestions, then please get in touch and we will see what we can do. While the magnificent achievement of our Championship win last season is still fresh in the mind, we need to put that behind us as we are now well into the new season. There is a fine line between remembering your victories and rubbing folks’ noses in it, as that just comes back to bite you on the backside. I want to make sure that all our official Social Media pages adhere to that way of thinking and mirror the ethos of the club. So far it has been hectic with fourteen competitive games already played up to the end of August. I quickly looked back 20, 30 and 40 years to see the comparison. In 1982 we played our 14th game on 9th October 1992 was the 10th October and 2002 was the 26th October. I think it is fair to say that the early season fixtures have increased considerably since the introduction of the Pyramid System with the need to complete the season by the second Saturday in April. Other factors such as games going off more easily now that they did 15 or 20 years ago. People see pitches in the Champions League and expect that to be the case at our level but while our park is looking better than ever it is far more expensive to upkeep to a decent standard. Bobby and his team do a great job and hopefully we have managed to fix the flooding problem in the clinic corner which has been with us since the pitch was turned slightly in 1909!! We have reached the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Final with our win at Turriff on Wednesday, and we look forward to that later in the month. The Final will be held at The Haughs, Turriff on Friday 30th September against either Huntly or Formartine Utd. We have also a Scottish Cup tie away to Civil Service Strollers coming up this month and we would love for that to be the start of an adventure in the Cup after the disappointment of losing out in the 1st Round last Weseason.can’t complain about the League results either, with only the one defeat away to Buckie Thistle. We have had more injuries to incur this season so far and while we lost Lewis Duncan, Gary Harris and Grant Campbell, we have recruited Jordan Guild, Connor Wood and Greg Buchan. It was sad to hear last weekend on the sad passing of Jimmy Campbell, a former custodian of Fort William FC alongside his wife Francis. It is also sad that he had to witness the goings on currently at the club while still alive. There are many good people who have been at Fort William over the years, Callum McLean, Danny Conlon, Henrik Madej, John Flannigan, David MacDonald, Colin Neilson, Ronnie and Stuart McLean to name but a few, but I am sure there are many others who will spring to mind, but in my opinion the current situation is a slur on the good name of these people who put so much time and effort into the club with very little reward. It is important to remember for all clubs that the people in charge at any point in time are only custodians and the aim should be to pass it on to future custodians in good shape. That’s what we are doing here at the Broch. I hope you enjoy the magazine, and as already mentioned, we are fully open to suggestions or improvements. Come awa the Broch. Welcome to our first online Monthly Magazine. We have moved away from the Programmes on a matchday due to poor sales and the amount of work and cost that is associated with that. It is a shame as I was a great programme collector at one point but as we all know, times move on. The Monthly Magazine will hopefully bring us a new audience and possibly something we can grow as the months pass. Any ideas for features are welcome and we hope to engage with supporters far and wide as well players past and present.

To date, I am relatively happy with where we are sitting in terms of squad, performance level and league position. The end of last season was a strange feeling where we had the massive high of winning the championship on the last day of the season, to missing out in the play offs a mere two weeks later. It was still a great achievement but gives us as a group more hunger to try and go further. The close season saw some changes to the group. Two were known about whilst one came as a bit of a shock but totally understandable. Gary Harris retired to family life. He has had a great career at some very good clubs, and I am delighted to have been able to contribute in allowing him to hang up his boots with a league winners medal around his neck. Nothing more than he deserves for the effort he has put into the game, especially during quite a few lonely times trying to recover from injury. Lewis Duncan has moved across the waters to begin a new life in the U.S. Since leaving Aberdeen as a pro, Lewis's ambition has always been to return to full time football. We were under no illusions that he was hoping we were a stop gap until hopefully that opportunity arose for him. Unfortunately for him it didn't quite materialise in this country, but he has managed to get something sorted overseas and has begun that part of his career now and we wish him every success in that. These were both expected however the news that Grant Campbell was hanging up his boots came as a bit of a blow. Towards the end of the championship winning season, Grant was carrying what he thought was a strain in his groin area. With the aid of strong painkillers and the required rest after games, we managed to get him through the season in which he played a massive part. Unfortunately for the club and Grant, a scan in the summer pointed to a problem in his back where the option of an operation would see him miss the whole of the current season. Having put his body quite literally on the line from day one, he came to the decision that enough was enough and that now his family would come first, a decision that although tough was one which was fully supported by myself and the club. That left us three short in the squad and after a successful trial period we managed to get local junior player Jordan Guild on to our books from neighbours Fraserburgh United. Jordan has been a mainstay at the Broch Utd for years now and felt that it was a good chance to test himself at a higher level. Russell McBride and the team at Fraserburgh United were good to deal with and didn't stand in Jordans way. With a squad on paper still strong, we went into the pre-season games with a sense of excitement. This year, we were fortunate enough to take part in the Premier Sports Cup for the first time, which involved four tough games against strong opposition. We didn't quite have the same options as we normally do to allow us to rotate in these games so ended up playing the same back four in all games. Ryan Cowie. Lewis Davidson and Paul Campbell picked up injuries. That tied in with holidays etc. meant that our young players were given the opportunity to play. We performed ok during these games and in no way disgraced ourselves however these games did take a lot out of the players in the lead up to our first league game of the season.

So, it came, Flag unveiling day at Bellslea and Deveronvale were the opponents. I have been on the other side of the fence here on a couple of occasions and had to clap another team out and although it is respectful and, in my opinion, the right thing to do, that doesn't mean it is a good feeling. Every player wants to be that person who gets the guard of honour, but no one really wants to do it. With that being the case we knew that Deveronvale would be gunning for us. Being honest, every team will be. Teams always raise their games to play the champions. We started the game well and scored early which settled us a bit. To be fair we didn't really kick on from the good start but still managed to start the campaign with a 3-0 win. Clean sheet and goals to start are always a good thing.

FROM THE MANAGER

Typically, the second game of the season was one of if not the toughest one we would face, Buckie Thistle away. I do not think we hit anywhere near the heights we can do and we ended up losing the game 2-1. If I am honest I do not think Buckie were their usual standard either. I think the Premier Sports Cup took a lot out of both teams meaning we both did not really get going in first couple of games. Two games in and already people are writing Fraserburgh off and getting too excited about what has happened at the start. No one wins leagues in February let along August. It was important that we reacted and to date we have done so, winning the next four league games with 23 goals for and 0 against - not a bad way to react, but we have to kick on from here. There are a number of teams who will still fancy their chances this year but the fact only one team has maximum points thus far shows how competitive the league is going to be this term. As I write this, we are away to go into a cup semi-final against Turriff Untied who are far from the side that finished the league last season. It is an opportunity for both clubs to get to a final and one we will be going all out to win and get ourselves back on that stage again of participating in cup finals. All in all, I am happy where we are as a squad. After the Buckie loss I realised that we had to try and get a couple of players in. We have managed to do that in the form of Connor Wood from Aberdeen East End juniors and getting Greg Buchan back from Huntly. We have watched Connor quite a bit in recent times and have seen his attributes in all of the games we have watched. He is an exciting winger who has a good brain to go with his pace and power. If we manage to keep our hands on him at Fraserburgh then it may prove to be one of the best signings we have done in my reign as manager. We made the very difficult call to allow Greg to move on from us last season but we always knew there would be the potential that he could return. We all knew the player that was inside Greg and now I feel he had to move on to allow him to show everyone that player by playing on a more consistent level. With Grant Campbell and Paul Young performing as well as they did last term, Greg found it difficult to break in as much as he wanted to. He went to Huntly where he quickly became an integral part of their team, so much so that not so long ago he was named captain of the club. When he became available for transfer, we knew we had to act. We had some real tough competition from other clubs to get Greg but thankfully he wanted to return, and I am delighted to have him back at Bellslea. The squad is a lot stronger than it was at the start of the league, and I am a lot happier where we are at.

Last season’s top two faced off at Victoria Park and it was the hosts who came out on top to put down a marker early in the Highland League season. Both sides were missing a number of players and whilst there weren’t that many clear-cut chances there was no lack of endeavour from the players on view. The Broch were first to threaten on two minutes when a clearance from a corner was retrieved by Bryan Hay who found Scott Barbour in space on the wing, his cross was headed wide by San Butcher. In the 10th minute Cohen Ramsay made good ground into the Fraserburgh half before finding Kevin Fraser outside the penalty area but his shot was easily Williamsaved.West then went close with a dipping cross which just went over Balint Demus’ crossbar whilst at the other end good pressure from Buckie Thistle saw Sam Urquhart and Marcus Goodall have shots blocked by some desperate Broch defending. Ramsay tried his luck on 28 minutes with a curling effort from the edge of the penalty box after the ball broke to him, which went just wide of Joe Barbour’s goal. Sam Pugh then picked up the first booking of the match for a tackle on Ryan Sargent and as the match drifted towards a scoreless first half Logan Watt drove forward beating Joshua Peters before switching the ball to Sean Butcher but the Broch’s leading scorer this season lifted his shot well over the crossbar.

The Broch made a change on the hour when Paul Campbell replaced the ineffective Scott Barbour and within ten minutes he had levelled the scores. Ryan Sargent played a delightful pass in behind the static Buckie defence for Campbell to run onto and dispatch the ball behind Demus from 16 yards.

Goalscorers: Kevin Fraser (50), Andrew Macaskill (74, pen).

Half Time: Buckie Thistle 0 Fraserburgh 0 The home side were straight onto the attack two minutes after the restart with Goodall finding Peters with a reverse pass but Barbour in the Broch goal produced a good save to thwart the Jags attacker. He could do nothing on 50 minutes however when Buckie took the lead. Ramsay swung a cross to the back post where Fraser collected the ball before firing it into the far corner past the exposed Barbour.

Andrew Macaskill made no mistake from 12 yards. The Broch tried to force an equaliser but Buckie held firm and saw out the match comfortably.

Goalscorer: Paul Campbell (70). Match Officials – Referee: Harry Bruce, Assistant Referees: Darren Munro & Rhys Jones.

We must start by welcoming back Greg Buchan from Huntly at the end of August, Greg has played 118 games for the Broch and has scored 16 goals. He made his second debut last Saturday away at Nairn, it was great for the supporter’s bus to give him and Ross Aitken a wave as we travelled through Banff on our way to the match. Greg has a great engine on him and he never gave the County midfield a minute’s peace on our way to a 4-0 victory. Congratulations to Scott Barbour and to Willie West who have both moved up the all-time scoring records. Scott’s penalty against Nairn County brought him to 211 goals which is now one ahead of Davie Robertson, this puts Scott into 2 nd place in the all-time scoring records and chasing down Michael Stephen who is 1st on 237. Willie scored with a header against Strathspey Thistle the week before, this puts him up to 163 goals and into 5th place, he passed Paul Keith who is on 162, his next target is Graeme Johnston who is in 4th place with 168 goals. Over the past few weeks, we have been back to playing our Highland League games, a comfortable 7 nil victory away to Lossiemouth secured 3 more points in the League. We then defeated Inverurie Locos 11 - 10 on penalties after the game finished in a 1 all draw in the quarter final of the Aberdeenshire Cup, this sets us up for a semi-final tie away to Turriff United on Wednesday 31st August. Kieran Simpson scored the winning penalty, it was a bit surreal as the keeper had saved his first penalty at the start of the shootout but he made no mistake the second time around. We then hammered Strathspey Thistle by 9 goals to nil away from home which was followed up by a 4 goal to nil victory away at Nairn County.

We will be running a bus to the Huntly game on Saturday 10th September which will leave the Elizabethan at 12:45pm, the cost of travel is £10 for adults and £5 for others. This bus could be a little late leaving to come home as we will be bringing back any players or officials who are not going to Bryan Hays testimonial dinner dance. Bryan is having his testimonial dinner dance in the Douglas hotel in Aberdeen on Saturday 10th September, all at the supporter’s club hope that it’s a cracking evening and that Bryan gets a lot more pounds paid into his testimonial fund, he certainly deserves it. Bryan has played 479 times and he has scored 22 goals for the Broch, he is 11th in the appearances table just behind Kevin Norris who is in 10th place with 488 and Brian Sim 9th on 490.

Fraserburgh FC Supporters Club September News

IN TOWN TODAY, SATURDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER INVERURIE LOCO WORKS

Inverurie Loco Works Football Club are a senior semi-professional football club from Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, who currently play in the Scottish Highland Football League (SHFL). The club was founded in 1903 by workmen from the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) who had their Locomotive, and Carriage and Wagon Workshops in Inverurie, hence from where the football club got its name. On National Railway Company 'Grouping' in 1923, the GNSR became part of the London & North Eastern Railway, one of the UK's big four railway companies at that time, and the football club lived on. The Locomotive Workshops themselves were formally closed in 1970 on the forming of British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Railways Board at that time. Despite the closure, Inverurie Loco Works F.C. continued to play. Having competed in the Aberdeenshire and North East Junior Leagues for many years, they became a senior club in 2001 when their application to join the SHFL was successful.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Wick Academy 0

The home side started where they left off when West crashed a long distance shot off the crossbar 5 minutes after the break. The Broch captain then saw a header from a Campbell corner cleared off the line. Paul Young and Aitken then combined to set up Watt but he fired his shot well over. Wick passed up a great chance to level on 65 minutes when Ryan Campbell floated in a pin pint cross but James Flett nodded over with the goal gaping. On 72 minutes another good run by West on the left ended with him slipping in Barbour who saw his shot cannon off the legs of Williamson. Two minutes later the hosts doubled their lead when Campbell’s corner was knocked down by Beagrie and West rifled the ball home from close range. Barbour then extended the Broch’s lead further when he collected Aitken’s throw-in and smashed a screamer into the left hand postage stamp past a bewildered Williamson. Sean Butcher has a chance in the 85th minute from Ethan Sutherland’s cross but the Wick keeper pulled off a good save.

Wick made the long journey south to Bellslea in round three of the Highland League. The Broch were on the attack immediately when Ross Aitken found Paul Campbell on the right who cut inside his marker before firing a shot well over. On five minutes Scott Barbour’s corner from the left was met by the head of Kieran Simpson but his header was blocked. Another corner from the left this time from Campbell found Ryan Sargent at the edge of the box who sent a curling shot just wide of the far post. Wick’s first attempt came on 9 minutes when Jack Halliday fired in a free kick straight at Joe SevenBarbour.minutes later Campbell picked up a rebound from a corner and Graeme Williamson did well to save the Broch striker’s effort. Midway through the first half good pressing by the home side won the ball back and Barbour raced cleared before unleashing a shot which Williamson touched onto the crossbar and over for another corner. The pressure increased on the visitors as a Campbell corner from the left found Simpson at the back post, he headed it back across goal only for Sargent to volley just over. The deadlock was broken on 28 minutes when Sargent collected the ball inside the area after a Campbell knock down and he swept the ball home from 12 yards. 11 minutes later Aitken set up Campbell on the right and his cross was headed against the crossbar by Jamie Beagrie, the rebound was fell to Campbell but Williamson did well to save. Logan Watt then curled in a free kick which Hay headed towards goal the rebound fell to Barbour but he scooped the ball over the bar. Just before the break Willie West and Sargent combined to set up Barbour but his parting shot went just wide of the far upright.

PLAYER & STAFF SPONSORS

Location: East Park Street, Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Former names: Strathbogie Park

In 1975, an incident at the end of a match where fans crossing the pitch to exit the stadium allegedly pushed the match referee to the ground. As a result, it was ordered by the Referee's Committee on 18 December that the ground be closed for the first two months of 1976. The club was fined £100 and it was ordered that police officers be present at every home game in the future. This type of punishment was unprecedented in Scottish football as it was the first time a club's stadium had been closed down.

Huntly's record attendance at Christie Park came in February 1995 when 4,500 spectators watched the club take on Dundee United in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup. The home side lost 3–1.

The ground was previously known as Strathbogie Park from 1921 when it opened, until 1926 when it was renamed Christie Park. The ground takes its name from former Provost Christie who acquired the ground and donated it to the football club on the condition that they remained amateur. This was agreed by the club, who subsequently renamed the ground in Christie's honour.

Christie Park is a football ground in the town of Huntly in the north-east of Scotland. It is the home ground of Highland Football League side Huntly F.C. It is located on East Park Street in the north-east of the town and has a capacity of 2,200 with 270 seated.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 0 St Johnstone B 1 The early exchanges in the second half saw neither team create any clear-cut chances, with Sean Butcher going into the referee’s book for a late challenge. Midway through the half Steven fired in a vicious strike from the left corner of the penalty area which Leask did well to tip over the crossbar. A minute later he was on hand again to tip the ball over as Kucheriavyi crossed for Pert’s header. The Broch made further changes as they searched for an equaliser but it was the Saints who extended their lead on 70 minutes when a through ball by Kucheriavyi found Steven who calmly rolled the ball past Leask. With six minutes remaining Scott Murison was shown a straight red card for an off the ball incident.

Goalscorers: Bailey Pert (34), Taylor Steven (70).

Tuesday 9th August 2022 St. Johnstone made the journey north to face Fraserburgh in the SPFL Trust Trophy with a squad made up of largely development players and, under the rules of the competition, two overage players. The Broch were on the attack first when Ross Aitken swung in a dangerous cross for Sean Butcher, however his shot didn’t trouble Jack Wills in the Saints goal. On 11 minutes a free kick on the left four a foul on Aidan Combe by Bobby Dailly, son of ex Scotland International Christian, was curled in by Logan Watt and beaten away by Wills. Maksym Kucheriavyi then tried his luck with a shot from outside the box but Paul Leask made a comfortable save. The Broch keeper was called into action again on 22 minutes this time doing well to thwart Taylor Steven from 8 yards out. He could do nothing on 34 minutes however when a good move involving several visiting players ended with Bailey Pert curling a shot high past Leask into the top left corner. Midway through the half Combe and Barbour combined only for Logan Ross in the Lossie goal to deny the Broch striker his hat-trick with a fine block. Zane Laird replaced Campbell with 19 minutes to go. Sargent crossed for Barbour but once again he missed the target with a header. Further goals did arrive in the space of a minute though. Firstly on 75 minutes good work by Laird on the right saw fellow substitute Combe flick the ball home from close range. The Broch’s seventh goal came almost immediately from the restart. Laird drove forward into the box and crossed for Barbour who gleefully accepted the chance to complete his hat-trick.

Lossiemouth almost took an early lead when Ross Archibald picked the ball up wide on the left before cutting in and trying a lob which just dipped over Joe Barbour’s crossbar. However it was the Broch who took the lead with their first meaningful attack of the match on 9 minutes when Bryan Hay found Paul Campbell in space on the right and his cross was controlled by Scott Barbour who swivelled and found the net with a precise finish. The visitors thought they had scored again on 12 minutes when Barbour’s cross was met with a bullet header by Ryan Sargent but the far-side assistant raised his flag for offside. Sean Butcher then headed a Campbell corner wide but it wasn’t long until the Broch did score again. A Logan Watt free kick was nodded into his own net by Lewis McAndrew under pressure from Butcher. William West then went close with a curling shot on 26 minutes. Three minutes later Butcher found Kieran Simpson with a lay-off but the young defender’s shot was always rising over the crossbar. West created another chance for Campbell when his cross was cleared to the edge of the box but the Broch striker couldn’t find the target with a ferocious drive. Just before the break Paul Young threaded a through ball to Campbell who found Barbour and last season’s top scorer made no mistake to make it 3-0.

Half Time: Lossiemouth 0 Fraserburgh 3 It only took the Broch 4 minutes to extend their lead when Butcher was left unmarked to head home Barbour’s corner from the left. Six minutes later the duo combined to make it 5-0 when Butcher nodded home Barbour’s pin-point cross. The Broch then made a couple of substitutions with Aidan Combe replacing Bryan Hay and Jordan Guild taking over from Butcher.

The team that day was Billy Gordon, Derek Milne, James Geddes, Trevor Fleming, Mark Dewar, Stuart Finnie, Kevin Norris, Scott Mackie, Steven Main, Neil McLaren, Michael Stephen, Gavin Wemyss. I asked some former colleagues of Mark to sum up what they thought of Mark. Russell McBride Mark was one of the nicest kids you could ever meet. As a player he was a grafter, hard worker in the middle of the park who gave his all. A member of the league winning squad 20 year ago as well who had a bright future on and off the park. As I say he was very well liked amongst the boys and who we affectionately nicknamed “Donald” after the First Minister at the time Donald Dewar. Sadly, missed by all Mark Cowie Mark Dewar broke in to the Fraserburgh first team around the same time that I did. We had already played quite regulary in the same youth team from the age of 14 / 15. Mark typifies what Fraserburgh FC players stand for in my eyes. Hard working, humble and honest. He was the type of player who gave everything in training and in each match. Being a local, he embraced the way Fraserburgh FC gave youngsters the chance to perform on the stage and he took each step in his stride with ease. I used to play in central midfield with Mark in the youth team and I think he complimented my skills by making up my shortfalls in the game. I was more of a so called "ball player" whereas a youngster I wasn't renown as being a tough tackler. Mark basically did all my tackling and retrieving of the ball and left me to find the pass or score the goal. There is no doubt in my mind that Mark would have saw out his career with Fraserburgh FC as he was in love with the club. He was always first to volunteer to try and give back to the community and would always be there to help the youngsters who were looking to break into the team just the way we did. There is a trophy in Marks honour which is presented each year at the end of the season awards night. I always try and give this to someone who shows the same characteristics that Mark showed. Someone who goes above and beyond for the club and puts others before themselves. Up until this season it has always been awarded to a player however this year we gave it to Derek Strachan, our kitman. That shows that everyone at the club is appreciated and that all their work is kindly thought of, as Mark Dewar most certainly was. He continues to be a sore miss and even if his stint at the club was all to brief, there is no mistaking the mark the Mark Dewar has left on the club and how fondly he is remembered at Bellslea Park, now and forever.

Mark Dewar – 1984 to 2002

Recently we were celebrating our League title win from twenty years ago, but it wasn’t all good news back then as this week has seen the 20th anniversary of the sad passing of one of our most promising young players, Mark Dewar. Mark was only 18 when he was so tragically taken from us but as a club, we have never forgotten the small part Mark played in our history. He played a total of 22 games for the first team but many more in the Highland Youth League and Aberdeenshire League. While we will never know, I have no doubt he would have had a great career at the Broch. We worked together at Gray & Adams for a while, and I told him one Friday morning that his club Suit had arrived at Duthie & Bruce. On saying that I would bring it to the game the following day, he pleaded with me to get it that day as he wanted to wear it prior to the game. He was bursting with pride wearing that, so much so, he was laid to rest in his club suit. Mark made a total of 22 first team appearances for the Broch and would have undoubtedly made many more. His final game in a Broch shirt was away to Inverurie Locos in a 1-1 draw.

Charlie Duncan Mark Dewar was a young player playing for Rosehearty in the local Amateur League. He was only 17 years old, and I went with Bruce Buchan to see him play. He had been with us in our Youth Team but wanted to see him in adult football. To say that I was impressed with him was an understatement. Mark was always very dedicated and wanted to do well and was a regular in the U18 and U21 sides we had. It didn’t take long for me to promote him to the 1st Team as a 17-year-old, and he was like several other young players at the club. He was part of our team that won the league and his attitude was brilliant. Mark was a talented, strong, and overall, just a great young lad. He has been sadly missed.

Mark’s League winning shirt hangs proudly in our boardroom

By Finlay Noble Ryan Christie I still remember Mark fondly from my days in the summer league and then when I first signed for Broch. It’s probably fair to say that Mark is one of the main reasons I had so much respect and admiration for the club, when I first signed and then met up with the first team squad, to see his pride and admiration for wearing the blazers and then the Broch strip I knew then how lucky we all were. In actual fact, we were lucky we all met Dewar and was lucky enough to call him our teammate and friend! On our normal bus journeys up the road watching his wrestling videos to them proudly walking into DJ’s nightclub with the cream trousers and blazers on, was very happy to be with Dewar and to share happy memories with him. Nothing but happy memories from what in all honesty was the worst time in my football career and my life when Mark sadly passed away, my thoughts still always go out to all Marks family and closest friends, he’s missed every minute of every day.

They moved to the Edinburgh Area Civil Service Sports Association in Muirhouse in 1957, where they continue to play their home games, the ground is commonly known as Christie Gillies Park.

Ahead of the 2016–17 season, they were elected to fill one of two vacancies in the Lowland Football League. Their former management team was Alex Cunningham and Ricky Clapperton until Gary Jardine took over for the 2018–19 season.

Strollers play their home games at Christie Gillies Park, which is located just off Marine Drive in Muirhouse, Edinburgh. Full Time: Fraserburgh 1 Inverurie Loco Works 1 Both side scored their first penalty in the shootout before Locos gained the advantage after Kieran Simpson’s spot kick was saved. Joe Barbour evened things up with a great save from Ward’s penalty and Bryan Hay ensured it would go to sudden death after scoring the Broch’s fifth penalty. Both team then scored their next six penalties including both keepers. Joe Barbour produced more heroics to deny Thain but Scott Barbour fired the Broch’s next one over the crossbar. Dingwall did the same with Locos thirteenth penalty and it was left to Simpson to hammer home and send the Broch through to an away semi-final tie at Turriff United who beat Aberdeen University 10-0.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 0 Inverurie Loco Works 1 The second half was only 6 minutes old when the Broch levelled. Combe found Sargent inside the box and although his shot was blocked the rebound fell to Barbour who managed to divert the ball into the net. The Broch striker then saw a good shot on the turn well saved after Guild had picked him out with a defence splitting pass. West the crossed for Combe and his goal bound effort was palmed away by the impressive Reid in the Locos goal. Garry Wood tried his luck with a speculative effort 13 minutes from time which went wide of Barbour’s goal. The Broch had one final chance as the game entered the final five minutes when Barbour and Butcher combined to set up Paul Campbell but his shot flew across the face of goal and just wide of the far post.

The Broch had an early chance to take the lead when Jordan Guild curled in a dangerous cross which Aidan Combe managed to steer a header just wide. On three minutes Scott Barbour, Sean Butcher and Combe all combined to set up a chance for Ryan Sargent who saw his net-bound shot well saved by Andy Reid. A corner from the left a minute later by Barbour was met by the head of Butcher but once again Reid was on hand to save the striker’s effort. At the other end Robert Ward managed to get clear of the home defence but Joe Barbour was well positioned to block the Locos player’s shot. Guild then tried his luck from 20 yards which the visitor’s keeper Reid did well to hold. Sargent then crossed for Barbour who turned well to get a shot away which went just wide of the target. Midway through the half Bryan Hay found William West on the left, he cut inside and passed to Sargent whose shot was saved by Reid. The Locos keeper then pulled off another decent save when Butcher got on the end of a Ross Aitken cross. As so often happens the team doing the pressing got caught on the break when a Kieran Simpson back-pass got away from Barbour and Taylor Thain knocked the ball inside to Ward who tapped the ball into an empty net. Just before the break The Broch came within a post width of an equaliser when Simpson got on the end of a Barbour corner but his shot smacked off the upright and was cleared to safety.

Strathspey Thistle v Fraserburgh, Seafield Park

The Broch included new signing Connor Wood in the starting line-up and he combined well with Scott Barbour after two minutes to set up Sean Butcher who fired wide of goal. Five minutes later Wood was on hand to tap home from close range after Barbour flicked on a long ball forward to Paul Campbell who crossed to set up the opener. Within a minute it was 2-0 when Campbell picked out Wood at the far post, he nodded the ball back to Barbour to head home. A third goal arrived midway through the half when William West headed the ball behind the Strathspey defence and Barbour ran onto the pass before lobbing Michael Maccallum in the home goal. On 32 minutes Butcher flicked the ball onto Aidan Combe but his shot was brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by Maccallum. Two minutes later he could do nothing to prevent Butcher scoring with a spectacular half volley after being teed up by Campbell. The Broch were denied a fifth on 40 minutes when Ross Aitken burst through only to see his shot blocked, Butcher then laid the ball off to Barbour but the home keeper did well to save his effort. James Fraser was then booked for a foul on Campbell and the half ended with Butcher heading against the crossbar after Wood’s cross wasn’t fully cleared by the Strathspey defence.

The visitors went in search of more goals and went close on three occasions before the hour mark. First Ryan Cowie picked out Butcher who headed just wide. Wood then picked the ball up on the left before driving forward and cutting inside the full back only to fire wide of the far post. Aitken then found Campbell on the right and his cross was just out of the reach of Barbour sliding in at the back post. On 63 minutes Barbour completed his hat-trick firing home after turning his marker. Cowie then went on a charging run and his cross was only half cleared to Logan Watt who shot side. The Broch made several changes with Ryan Sargent coming on and firing in a shot which was blocked, Campbell fired in the rebound which clipped the top of the crossbar. West then played a long ball forward on 75 minutes which Sargent flicked onto Campbell who rounded the keeper and rolled the ball home. A couple of minutes later Cowie freed Zane Laird on the left and he drove into the box before firing a shot across Maccallum and into the bottom corner. Chances came and went for the Broch with Watt bursting clear only to see his shot blocked and Laird’s cross was headed over by Campbell. Laird then latched onto a through ball and when the rebound fell to Sargent his shot cannoned off the post. With three minutes remaining West got in on the scoring act heading home a Sargent cross. Sargent then got a deserved goal when he latched onto Campbell’s flick and drove the ball home. West was then denied a second in the final minute when Maccallum pulled off a great save from a header after Cowie’s cross into the box.

As the match entered the final few minutes Ethan Duncalf set up Mason but the Locos captain saw his half volley well saved by Inglis.

On 36 minutes Sam Inglis did well to save from Taylor Mason after the Locos player found space on the left side of the penalty area. A corner from the left found Sam Walker three minutes later but he headed over as Locos pressed for an equaliser. Inglis then redeemed himself after a poor kick out fell to Mason but the Broch keeper did well to block the striker’s effort.

A very youthful Broch team got off to a perfect start in the Aberdeenshire League with an excellent 4-2 victory over their hosts. The Harlaw Park side took an early lead when Anton Chauvin headed home a second minute corner. The visitors grew into the game and levelled on 23 minutes when Callum Kelly fired home from close range after his initial effort had been blocked.

The Broch striker then turned provider setting up Ross Taylor to tap in from 4 yards out after tricking his way past a Locos defender on the bye-line before crossing for the Black and Whites captain who couldn’t miss. On the half hour Kelly had another chance after being released by Ethan Sutherland’s through ball, but he rifled a shot just over the crossbar after outmuscling his marker.

Half Time: Inverurie Loco Works 1 Fraserburgh 2 Five minutes after the break the Broch extended their lead when Kelly set up Taylor for a carbon copy of his first goal after winning the ball back on the bye-line before squaring it for an easy finish. The pressure told on 55 minutes when Zane Laird set up his brother Stuart who curled the ball past Findlay in the visitor’s goal. On the hour Rory Brown tested Inglis in the Broch goal but he was equal to the task tipping the Turriff youngster’s shot over the crossbar. Four minutes later Knox found space inside the box and fired home to level the score again. Back came the Broch with Zane Laird crossing for Miller who brought out a good save by Findlay. Callum Nicol went close for the visitors on 71 minutes with a drive which flew past Inglis’ left hand post. Into the last fifteen minutes and both teams were looking for the winner.
