Mission

The mission of The Bridge Youth and Family Services is to help young people and their families achieve social and emotional health. The Bridge accomplishes its mission by providing comprehensive counseling and therapy services, specializing in the many emotional or behavioral problems facing youth and their families. Counseling is available to preschool-age children (Early Childhood Behavioral Health Program) and youth through age 17. The mentoring program is also available for children 7-15 years of age.

Services are available to all Palatine Township residents regardless of ability to pay. Private funding is responsible for 35% of the annual budget.

Motivational Interviewing: Counseling to Help People Overcome Reluctance to Change Gregg Stockey, Executive Director Children (and adults) that have developed bad habits are often ambivalent about changing those habits; behaviors that interfere with reaching their goals and potential. If you have ever known someone who said they wanted to stop smoking, change their diet, start an exercise program, or give up alcohol; you probably know what I mean. On one day the commitment to change may be strong, but on another day the commitment wanes and a return to old behaviors might follow.

For those of us who spend our lives attempting to help people make better choices, the flip-flopping that often occurs between healthy and unhealthy decisions can be disheartening. Motivational Interviewing is a counseling approach created to help people successfully commit to and follow through on the changes they desire.

In Motivational Interviewing, counselors discover and emphasize a client’s personal motivations for change, and help them overcome barriers that stand in the way. There are several ways that Motivational Interviewing is utilized at The Bridge. I’ll highlight a couple of them.

Dan was a participant in one of the groups The Bridge leads at local high schools. He liked to smoke marijuana.

He expressed a strong desire to join the military after high school. Perhaps this could provide an incentive for him to rethink his drug use. As part of Motivational Interviewing, he was asked to speak with a military recruiter who was visiting his school. Even though he was at least one year away from enlisting he was encouraged to ask about the military’s response if he tested positive for marijuana use upon enlistment, used during his time in the service, or if his medical or school records indicated pot use. The recruiter politely but firmly told Dan that such a candidate would not be welcome to enlist. He returned to the group one week later motivated to eliminate marijuana use, and open to suggestions about how to do so that he previously resisted.

Parents can use Motivational Interviewing, too. Parents of kids who misbehave are often tired and frustrated.

Sometimes they feel helpless; unable to influence their child. Motivational Interviewing can help them clarify their desire to influence and help their child, and spur them to more effective action that can alter the child’s behavior.

Consequences imposed by parents can be the impetus for teens to decide that changing bad habits is a better alternative than staying the same.

As with all counseling activity at The Bridge, Motivational Interviewing can help children overcome trauma and other challenges they face, spurring them on to healthy choices and lifestyles that contribute to them being productive citizens that reach for their fullest potential.

The Motivational Interviewing approach to counseling has been helpful with teens who express desire to quit smoking, or to quit using alcohol or illegal drugs. It has also been used to help depressed teens stop self-harming behavior such as cutting themselves, and to help some be more assertive in their relationships.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR On behalf of The Bridge Youth & Family Services, thank you to everyone that supported our mission in the 2017 fiscal year. The Bridge is blessed to have hundreds of donors and volunteers on our team.

Throughout the year, The Bridge management team, program staff and board of directors continued to take action on our Strategic Plan. This plan revised The Bridge Promise Statement. It reads, “We help kids and families overcome challenges and trauma to lead happier, more successful lives.” In addition, The Strategic Plan set out a three year course for programs, fundraising, infrastructure and marketing.

Working together in coordination, collaboration and partnerships is a long standing value and central to the work of The Bridge.

Last fiscal year, The Bridge…

•S erved more than 900 people through counseling, mentoring, and crisis intervention programs •H elped launch the United Palatine Coalition, a community wide effort to improve outcomes for kids involving 20 organizations.

•A s a member of Illinois Collaboration on Youth, successfully advocated for youth contracts to be included in the State of Illinois Prompt Payment Act. •P rovided groups in school at District 15 and District 211 locations.

•A ssisted District 15 with its suicide prevention program, Signs of Suicide.

• The Bridge Youth and Family Services helped 924 children and families in fiscal year 2017.

• 72% of them were at or below the poverty line.

• The majority, 62%, of the youth we served were teenagers.

• 33% of our youth identified as being Caucasian, while 44% identified themselves as Hispanic.

• 61% were female • 97% of crisis intervention clients were reunified with their families.

• We served another 3,464 people via community education, training, and resource referrals.

THE UNITED PALATINE COALITION

Palatine is fortunate to be a resource rich community with great schools, sound village services, and effective non-profit organizations. Each of us works best within our own scope of services and mission, striving to reach our organizations’ objectives for making a difference in the lives of children.

The United Palatine Coalition, or UP, endeavors to improve upon the good things we’re already doing. UP is a “cradle to career” initiative involving more than 20 organizations that focus on ensuring all Palatine youth are on the path to leading productive and satisfying lives. Our school districts, village, police department, and other non-profits are participating.

Funding to launch UP is provided by the United Way. This newly formed partnership will strive for collective impact through shared goals, principles, and measurements of success for area youth. Together, the UP partners address barriers to educational achievement and workforce success so that all children have ample opportunity to realize their potential.

The Bridge is a proud member of the United Palatine Coalition because UP’s goals are consistent with The Bridge’s Strategic Plan goal of forming partnerships when possible to improve outcomes for youth. UP is in a start-up phase. Expect to hear more about it in coming months and years.

What is SPARCS? • SPARCS stands for Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress.

• SPARCS focuses on helping participants cope with current stress in their lives.

• SPARCS is a great evidence-informed therapy for young people who will benefit from learning additional coping skills to manage stress.

• SPARCS is completely present-focused, so no past experiences are discussed except during individual assessments prior to beginning groups. If a young person tries to discuss a past experience in the group, the therapist will quickly bring the topic back to how someone is being affected in the present moment or how they are using the skills taught.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SPARCS? I n SPARCS, participants will learn how to recognize stress in the body, use coping skills in that moment, and develop communication skills with others. Not only will these skills help in this type of situation, but the participant will learn how to manage in any type of stressful event, such as a test tomorrow, an upcoming dance, or having a difficult conversation with a friend or family member.

WHAT MAKES SOMEONE ELIGIBLE FOR SPARCS? There are many types of life events that can cause “traumatic stress,” as professionals refer to it. Those situations can include the following: • death or loss of a loved one

• separation from family or friends

• abuse or neglect

• natural disasters like floods or tornados

• medical illnesses

• witnessing or experiencing bullying

• accidents such as car accidents

• witnessing violence in the home, community or school

PEER CONNECTIONS Peer Connections is a program offered at The Bridge Youth and Family Services that is designed to develop prosocial skills in youth between the ages of 8-12. Skills are taught in a group setting and each group typically has between eight to 12 participants. The program runs for eight weeks, with each session lasting 90 minutes. Bridge therapists and school staff from District 15 refer participants.

Some learn about the program by word of mouth. Youth may participate multiple times, and while the material remains the same, the activities and teaching methods change. The Spring, Summer and Fall Peer Connections groups served 22 youth.

Peer Connections give its members the opportunity to build social skills within a small group setting focusing on topics such as beginning and maintaining peer relationships and overcoming social obstacles. In Peer Connections, members also learn how to recognize emotions in themselves and others, utilize coping skills, and develop communication skills. The group members learn how to manage peer

conflict and develop problem solving skills through various activities and discussions. Peer Connections provides an opportunity for growth and development of social skills through guided communicating, role playing, game playing, behavioral rehearsal, and open sharing. Group members learn how to use teamwork, practice different ways of communicating, and recognize appropriate behavior with peers. Typical sessions begin with a warm-up activity, geared to drawing group members toward sharing and exploring themselves and each other. This is followed by an activity geared toward a particular theme for that week. Each session wraps up with a game related to the theme of the week as well. Opportunities exist for participants to discuss relevant issues and concerns of their own.

Group members have enjoyed activities such as freeze dance as a way to practice being in control of their bodies and learning to relax. Peer Connections also provides an opportunity to play therapeutically adapted versions of board and card games such as UNO, Jenga, and Headbanz.

Varying the activities throughout the group keeps members interested as they learn new skills. Many of the group members have expressed that they had struggled with making friends; the activities in the group help them practice friendship skills and build friendships within the group with the hopes of applying those skills to their everyday life.

The friendships built within the group have the potential to extend beyond the conclusion of the group.

2016-2017 FUNDRAISING EVENTS IN REVIEW The Bridge Youth & Family Services would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to the 20162017 fundraising programs. This tangible expression of their confidence in The Bridge’s ability to enrich the lives of others is truly appreciated.

Annual Fund The Annual Fund is the anchor of The Bridge’s fundraising program.

During 20162017, Annual Fund donations made to #GivingTuesday, Major Gifts ($1,000 +), direct mail and gifts pledged during the phonathon totaled $126,846. We would especially like to thank the dedicated high school volunteers who spent their Tuesday and Wednesday nights making phone calls for us. You are all so appreciated!

Golf Outing On August 8, 2016, The Bridge hosted 108 golfers at our annual Peter D. Cunneen Memorial Golf Outing! Guests enjoyed a buffet lunch prior to teeing off to complete 18 holes at Inverness Golf Club. Golfers participanted in on course games including Beat The Mayor, Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive, and more. The winning foursome was from BMO Harris Bank, one of our long time corporate sponsors. During the program portion of the evening, guests watched street chalk artist Shaun Hayes create a work which was auctioned off later in the evening.

The golf outing raised over $75,000 for The Bridge programs and services.

Bridge Color Run In partnership with Palatine’s Rotary Club’s Oktoberfest, The Bridge hosted its Color Run on September 17th. We welcomed nearly 160 guests who were doused in color along a route that

took them through the streets of Palatine and right past the Bridge offices. After the run, the winner of our 50/50 raffle was announced, and guests were able to enjoy the Oktoberfest festivities. Thanks to our runners, walkers, volunteers, and beautiful weather, we raised over $3,500.

Trivia Night Our third annual Trivia Night event was held on February 11, 2017. The Bridge Young Professionals Board welcomed nearly 70 guests to the Rolling Meadows Community Center for a fun night of trivia with categories including Are You Smarter Than a High Schooler, Name that Lyric, Movie Bluff, Who Said It? and more. Attendees enjoyed an open bar courtesy of ELIX Bartending and brought in their own snacks. Guests worked as teams to solve questions and the winning team was awarded a $200 cash prize! Thank you to everyone who attended and helped the Young Professionals Board raise over $1,500 to benefit the youth in our community.

35TH ANNIVERSARY SECRET GARDEN GALA The Bridge’s Secret Garden Gala was amazingly successful. Thanks to our corporate sponsors, guests, volunteers, and a generous 1:1 match from longtime donors and volunteers Susan and Norman Abazoris, we raised over $100,000 for The Bridge programs and services.

Guests began the evening by browsing our silent auction while enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Once in the ballroom, guests were able to participate in a live auction, DASH and Heads or Tails games. After the program, guests danced to the sounds of the Fantasia Band.

Special thanks to Co-Chairs Lynn Seamann and Joanne Perez, and Committee Members Deb Armstrong and Jim Esposito for a fabulous and successful evening!

THE BRIDGE IN ACTION Thanks to the generosity of Navy Pier and Fifth Third Bank, The Bridge was selected to participate in Navy Pier’s 100 Rides 100 Nonprofit Partnerships initiative celebrating Navy Pier’s centennial. The Bridge’s mentoring program participants received free passes for the Centennial Wheel, the iconic 200 foot tall Ferris wheel, in addition to a stipend for bus transportation to Chicago.

Itzel Gama, a Bridge bilingual child & family therapist, gave an awesome presentation to ECDEC families on parenting skills. ECDEC is a preschool program that serves children who are English language learners and/or need support to be ready for success in kindergarten. ECDEC has three sites: two of which are in Palatine. Itzel presented on the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets, sibling rivalry and having a new baby in the home.

The Bridge mentoring program hosted a car wash to pay for their end of summer camping trip.

The mentees had such an awesome time and it taught them how to work for something you want. The Bridge mentoring program went on their annual camping trip last summer. Mentors and mentees participated in team building activities, tent pitching, kayaking, fishing, and a host of other fun activities.

One of the major goals of The Bridge mentor program is to help youth in the community become active, contributing members of society. Each month, the program participates in a service project. For September, the mentors and mentees grabbed their gloves to clean up a local park.

Our IKEA Makeover was completed in the summer of 2016. We received new desks, chairs, filing cabinets, and storage cabinets for the counselors’ office space. We sincerely thank the staff and helpers from IKEA USA for working tirelessly to put all of the furniture together and getting us back into our work spaces promptly!

THE BRIDGE HONORS 25 YEARS OF SERVICE Susan and Norman Abazoris were honored by The Bridge Youth & Family Services for more than 25 years of volunteerism and unwavering support.

The Abazoris’ contributions were highlighted during an intimate recognition ceremony held at Inverness Golf Club on Wednesday, November 16, 2016. The 51-year nonprofit’s leadership staff and several board members attended to acknowledge the couple’s commitment to The Bridge for more than a quarter of a century.

“They say new friends are silver and old friends are gold.

If that is the case, then Susan and Norman Abazoris are certainly gold,” said Executive Director Gregg Stockey.

Susan Abazoris began volunteering for the organization in the late 1980’s through the mentoring program. In her comments, she said she began volunteering out of a desire to utilize her counseling background, and to positively impact the health and well-being of local children and families. “I helped to match kids who needed mentors; I know of mentees who are still in contact today with the mentors that stepped in at a time in their lives when they were truly needed,” Susan Abazoris said.

To this day, Susan is a part of The Bridge Program Committee, where she offers a valuable community voice and an important influence based on her years of involvement with the organization. In addition to volunteering and attending yearly fundraising events, Stockey highlighted the couple’s overall impact through the years.

Youth and Family Counselor Kathy O’Hara has served the community as a member of The Bridge staff for 25 years.

Kathy, already an experienced social worker, came to The Bridge to work with children and families that had no affordable alternative for counseling. She is still here for the same reason. In her time at The Bridge, Kathy has provided counseling to nearly 1,000 Palatine Township families. Their success has been her biggest reward.

She has also served as internship supervisor to 42 master’s degree students, helping them learn the skills to embark on successful careers as counselors and psychotherapists.

Nine of Kathy’s former interns eventually joined The Bridge staff. Her career is not over, but Kathy O’Hara has clearly established a legacy of compassion and excellence that will not be forgotten.

If you have ever known someone who said they wanted to stop smoking, change their diet, start an exercise program, or give up alcohol; you probably know what I mean. On one day the commitment to change may be strong, but on another day the commitment wanes and a return to old behaviors might follow.

Recent tax legislation may make one gift vehicle more advantageous than another. Through careful planning, you can identify the method for making a contribution which best fits your situation, while maximizing your gift’s impact on The Bridge Youth & Family Services. We encourage you to consult with legal and financial advisors to decide which option is most advantageous to you. We will be pleased to meet with you and your advisors in complete confidentiality to assist you as you consider these options.

THE ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund is extremely important to The Bridge Youth & Family Services. It helps to strengthen the foundation on which the agency will build its future.

Your annual contribution helps: •K eep client fees reasonable so we are able to offer our services regardless of someone’s ability to pay.

•D eliver Crisis Intervention, on-call, 24 hours a day, for runaway, homeless or locked-out youth (through age 17) in six northwest Cook County townships.

•O ffer comprehensive counseling and therapy services.

•P rovide funding for meaningful mentoring programs.

•E nhance the leadership skills of area youth through service projects.

•M ake community education on a variety of topics that relate to youth and families available.

You can participate in The Bridge Youth & Family Services’ growth and success with a gift to the Annual Fund. This helps to fulfill our commitment to help young people and their families overcome obstacles created by trauma and achieve social and emotional health.

How and When to Make a Gift to the Annual Fund You can mail your gift to the Development Office at The Bridge Youth & Family Services, or you can use your MasterCard or Visa to make a gift.

If you would like to participate in the Annual Fund but are unable to make your contribution right away, we would be glad to send you a pledge reminder. Just let us know the amount you wish to contribute and the date you would like to be reminded. *As a convenience to you, your giving society membership may be paid in installments within the fiscal year. All contributions to the Annual Fund are taxdeductible to the full extent of the law.

GIFTS OF ENDOWMENT FUNDS

LIFE INCOME GIFTS

An endowment gift to The Bridge Youth & Family Services is an excellent way to ensure future excellence in perpetuity.

It also provides the donor with the satisfaction of knowing that his or her generous legacy will continue as long as The Bridge exists. While endowments may be established to support virtually any activity or program at The Bridge, we have a critical need for general funds. This allows the Board of Directors the flexibility to spend endowment earnings as needs arise, thus making the best choice for the use of funds in any given year.

A life income gift to The Bridge allows you and/or a beneficiary to retain income from the assets donated and take a federal income tax deduction for a portion of the gift value (depending on the terms of the gift) while eliminating capital gains tax on gifts of securities or real estate. Referred to as Charitable Remainder Trusts, life income gifts to The Bridge should be arranged between you, The Bridge, and your financial and legal advisors to ensure a giving arrangement that is tailored to your personal requirements.

GIFTS OF INCOME INTEREST MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS The Bridge’s generous and devoted family and friends continue to support counseling opportunities. The donations provide funding for clients who demonstrate economic need and who show evidence of the ability to succeed in our programs.

A charitable Lead Trust, an assignment of trust income to The Bridge Youth & Family Services, allows you to give an income interest to the organization for a designated period of time, after which the property in the trust returns to you or your heirs. In certain cases, this method of giving allows you to reduce the gift and/or estate tax when the assets are passed to your children or grandchildren at the expiration of the trust.

GIFTS OF CASH A cash gift entitles you to a charitable deduction against income. The deduction must be taken in the year in which your gift is made. If the amount of your gift exceeds 50 percent of your adjusted gross income, you may carry over the excess of your contribution for as many as five years.

Cash gifts can be made as a one-time contribution or over several years as payments toward a pledge. Checks should be sent with any designated purpose for the gift clearly indicated. Gifts delivered or mailed by December 31 qualify for tax deductibility for the calendar year. Please make checks payable to The Bridge Youth & Family Services.

GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE Life insurance is a unique way to give to The Bridge. To qualify, The Bridge needs to become owner and beneficiary. You may choose to donate a paid-up policy no longer needed, give a policy that is not fully paid-up and take a deduction for the present value of the policy, or make The Bridge the owner and beneficiary of a new policy. Ongoing premium payments qualify as charitable deductions.

GIFTS OF CLOSELY HELD STOCK GIFTS OF APPRECIATED SECURITIES A gift of appreciated securities entitles you to a charitable deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities, and none of the appreciation in the security is taxable to the donor. When you give securities, your federal tax deduction is limited to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income for the year in which you make the gift. However, you may carry forward the excess amount as a charitable contribution for up to five years, subject to the 30 percent rule.

When you give gifts of closely held stock to The Bridge, you avoid capital gains on the appreciation of the stock and receive an immediate personal tax deduction for the full market value of your gift limited to the 30-percent, five-year rule. Often, the gift is followed by an offer from the corporation to redeem the stock from its retained earnings. GIFTS OF REAL ESTATE MATCHING GIFTS You may be able to double or triple your gift through your company’s matching gift program. If your employer makes such contributions, the personnel office will have complete details on how to direct a matching gift to The Bridge Youth & Family Services. Matching funds, once received, will count toward your yearly gift.

Gifts of appreciated real estate are like gifts of appreciated stock. Any type of property you have owned for more than one year qualifies as a charitable contribution at its fair market value. The asset may be given outright, may serve as the corpus of a trust arrangement, or in the case of a personal residence, may be given with the right of lifetime tenancy by the donor and/or spouse. An immediate charitable deduction is available to the donor, and the gift is not subject to capital gains taxes.

DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS

This type of gift can take several forms and, in most cases, provides a charitable deduction equal to the fair market value of the property. If the asset has appreciated in value and the donated asset is used by The Bridge, the donor is entitled to a charitable deduction equal to the asset’s fair market value.

If, however, the asset is not used by The Bridge, the donor’s charitable deduction is his or her cost basis in the property.

Why choose a donor-advised fund?

When you give, you want your charitable contributions to be as effective as possible. Donor-advised funds are the fastestgrowing charitable giving vehicle in the United States because they are one of the easiest and most tax-advantageous ways to give to charity. When you donate to your donoradvised fund, you’re making a tax-deductible donation to the organization sponsoring the fund. But because your account is a donor-advised fund, you advise the organization on how to grant the money out to your favorite charities. Your donation is also invested based on your preferences, so it has the potential to grow, tax-free, while you’re deciding which charities to support.

BEQUEST So often we think of making gifts to organizations that represent causes we care about in immediate terms – by writing a check or making a cash or stock gift. A bequest to The Bridge Youth & Family Services is not subject to federal, estate or local inheritance taxes, and the value of the bequest is deductible in determining the taxable estate. There is no limit on the deduction.

A Legacy Society was founded to honor individuals who have expressed their commitment to the continuation of the youth and family offerings available at The Bridge by making a planned gift. Notifying The Bridge about a donor’s intentions allows the agency to appropriately acknowledge this act of kindness immediately.

MEMORIAL AND TRIBUTE GIFTS The Bridge accepts and acknowledges gifts which honor or memorialize individuals. More and more, it is customary for friends and family members to express their sympathy through memorial giving as a meaningful way to offer consolation on the loss of a friend or relative. At other times, marking a special occasion or an achievement by honoring a person, couple or family through a tribute gift may be appreciated more than a material gift.

MAKE A TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION Donate cash, stocks or non-publicly traded assets such as real estate, private business interests and private company stock and get your tax receipt. You’ll also be eligible for an immediate tax deduction.

SUPPORT CHARITIES YOU LOVE, NOW OR OVER TIME. You can support any IRS-qualified public charity with money in your donor-advised fund. The public charity sponsoring your account will conduct due diligence to ensure the funds granted out will be used for charitable purposes and the grantee is an IRS-qualified public charity.

GROW YOUR DONATION, TAX-FREE While you’re deciding which charities to support, your donation can potentially grow based on your investment preferences, making available even more money for charities.

The amount of your gift is kept confidential, and the friend or family member is informed of your thoughtfulness through an acknowledgement card from The Bridge Youth & Family Services.
