Healing is happening.

In a year of constant change, The Bridge continues to adapt to fulfill our mission of helping youth and families achieve social and emotional health.

Dear supporters of The Bridge, On behalf of The Bridge Youth and Family Services, I thank everyone that supported our mission in Fiscal Year 2020. We received 700 donations during the year and 220 people volunteered their time to support The Bridge.

In this annual report you will find some highlights from our year. Despite the global pandemic that disrupted the last four months of our fiscal year, nearly 1,000 people accessed The Bridge for counseling or mentoring programs. I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish with the support, investment and resources by many of you in our community.

In March of 2020 we transitioned our therapies and programs to virtual services (virtually overnight) to online video conferences and via telephone. While this was a challenge for our staff and the clients they serve, together we managed to continue to provide life-changing care. In June, we began transitioning back into the office with safety protocols in place.

Currently, in-person and tele-health services are being offered in nearly identical amounts.

It certainly has been a year unlike any other in our lifetime, yet the donors, volunteers, and staff at The Bridge have been as committed as ever to ensuring our youth and families have the necessary services and supports provided by The Bridge.

We appreciate your engagement with The Bridge. Through the creativity of The Bridge staff and volunteers, we were able to continue to host our two major fundraisers, with a twist. The virtual gala and socially distanced golf outing went on without a hitch, and we look forward to our traditional events as soon as possible. The volunteer mentors in the youth mentoring program have found new and creative ways to remain engaged with their mentees.

It has been inspiring to be a part of an incredibly committed community of board members, staff, donors and volunteers. Please take a moment to review the impact your support had on the over 900 youth and families served by The Bridge Youth and Family Services in the past year.

Meet Jim Esposito, our newly elected Chair of the Board of Directors Jim is the credit team manager at Wells Fargo and has been an active participant on the board for the past five years. Having served as member and chair of the finance as well as the development committee, Jim has been a key participant in the growth of our organization.

Jim was encouraged and supported by his employers to become involved in the local community and volunteered early in his career and as a community banker. He joined the board of The Bridge because he believed in the mission of making a difference in the lives of those he meets and this has always been a part of his personal vision. Giving back to his community has become a behavior and a habit for him.

As the new board chair, Jim hopes to build on the efforts of the many board committees and increase financial resources to expand services, while increasing staff satisfaction and longevity. Upon taking this new leadership role, he shared, “Acknowledging and reinforcing the efforts of so many others is something a leader needs to do on a consistent basis. My role is a small one when compared to the contributions of our donors, volunteers, staff, committee members and board members.�

When she first became a volunteer, our YPB chair Alexa, was only considering what she could give back to the kids. “I didn’t think about what The Bridge could give back to me. It is a fun place to volunteer and knowing the work I am doing is having an impact on the next generation is very rewarding. The work that The Bridge does inspires me to stay involved. We raise money so they can do what they do and help kids. I like giving back to my community.”

BRIDGE STAFF The Bridge staff successfully shifted from in-person to online Zoom meetings in accordance with physical distancing regulations starting in March. We've also implemented safety guidelines for our staff in office and client waiting room.

Counseling Available in English and Spanish, The Bridge offers counseling to help Palatine township youth and their families cope with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and other challenges they may face.

Crisis Intervention The Bridge is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for runaway, homeless, locked-out, and otherwise at-risk youth in much of northwest Cook County.

Our goal is to preserve or reunify families whenever possible.

CRISIS INTERVENTION Meet Tómas, an 18-year-old high school senior who was dealing with a large amount of stress in his life. Not only was he busy studying for his AP exams and applying to college, he was actively seeking asylum after he and his family fled their home country due to government corruption and the lack of political and religious freedoms.

With the stress his family was experiencing, Tomás was depressed and anxious and began having suicidal thoughts. He sought help from his school social worker who called The Bridge’s crisis intervention team for assistance. The Bridge crisis counselor went to the school and performed a suicide evaluation to determine if Tomás needed to be hospitalized. Upon establishing that Tomás was not a risk to himself, The Bridge crisis counselor recommended that Tomás start counseling at The Bridge.

Tomás’ parents did not believe in the need for mental health services and were not supportive of him seeking therapy. They also did not have a way of transporting Tomás to The Bridge to receive counseling services. Fortunately, The Bridge was able to provide transportation for Tomás via our transportation voucher program, which provides taxi services with funds from the McCormick Foundation for clients who struggle to provide transportation to travel to and from therapy.

Tomás was also able to access therapy with our sliding pay scale to cover his counseling sessions. Without this, he would not have been able to receive essential mental health care services.

Family Reunification is a primary goal of the Crisis Intervention program is to prevent unnecessary placements of youth outside of their family's care. Offered services target family stability and safety so children can remain or return home.

The Crisis Function Checklist (CFC) allows a numeric score, from 1 to 60, to be assigned indicating a client's functioning at the initial crisis contact and again at termination. This checklist evaluates the client's functioning in the areas of family, school, substance abuse, emotional, cognitive and social interactions. Our goal is to have an improvement of six points or higher in at least 50% of the families we serve.

When Crisis Intervention clients initiate service, an individualized treatment plan is developed. Goal Attainment Ratings are a way to determine how well treatment plan goals are met.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, our Bridge therapists had to quickly alter how they operated their counseling sessions. One client named Jack, who is younger than 10-years-old, was able to smoothly transition from in-person to video sessions. Before the pandemic, he was regularly participating in play therapy. This technique allows for a child to express emotions and situations in a more creative, imaginative, and in a natural, safe manner. Instead of having to directly share their feelings, they can portray it through a character in a story line. This form of therapy has proved to be very successful, especially with kids who have experienced trauma or have difficulty talking about their experiences. Jack has dealt with his parent's divorce, issues pertaining to grief, and bullying. Due to these life experiences, he tends to be very anxious and has a tendency to experience emotional outbursts.

Fortunately, with the help of technology, Jack was able to continue to participate in interactive activities and play therapy, but in a modified way. Although video sessions sometimes has issues such as poor internet connection, our therapists found ways to get creative and innovative to eliminate some of these obstacles. For example, Jack and his Bridge therapist were able to play Legos with one another. He would have his set of Legos while the therapist had their own and they would incorporate each other’s dialogue into the play. Jack also enjoys drawing, which resulted in his therapist integrating art therapy into their sessions. One prompted art activity included creating a heart map. Both the therapist and Jack made their own which showed all the things and people that made them happy, especially during tough times.

YOUTH ADVOCACY Kevin O'Donnell passed on July 3, 2020. He was a beloved mentor, Board Member, and friend.

For over 15 years, Kevin O’Donnell was a dedicated advocate of The Bridge. As a mentor, Board member, and Chairman, Kevin made a significant impact on both the kids in the Youth Advocacy program and the Board of Directors. Serving as our attorney for years without compensation, Kevin was instrumental in the growth and betterment of our organization.

Executive Director, Gregg Stockey, shared, “The kids in the mentoring program, and all of us that knew him, will remember him as kind, funny, generous, and persistent in pursuing better lives for all the children in our community.”

Thank you to Kevin and his family for positively impacting The Bridge.

FY2020 Outcomes The Youth Advocacy Program uses the Social Competence Inventory (SCI) to measure outcomes. The SCI measures social skills such as communication and problem solving skills. After turning 11, Kaylee’s father and her Bridge therapist agreed that she would greatly benefit from having additional support in the way of positive adult female role models and was referred to our mentoring program. On her first day, Kaylee recalls being nervous and refusing to get out of the car to attend the group activity. She was shy and apprehensive about interacting with the mentors and mentees, as building peer relationships had always been one of her greatest challenges. However, after some time and with patience and positive reinforcement, Kaylee started to feel increasingly comfortable in the group. She attributes this to nurturing mentors and her ability to slowly build enough confidence to talk to people and make friends with the other mentees in the program. The mentoring program gave Kaylee a safe and structured place to be her authentic self, to explore new interests, and build important and long-lasting relationships with adults and peers.

Camping proved to be one of Kaylee’s favorite activities with the group. However, her mentors noted that she truly shined when she participated in the group’s service projects. Kaylee had a natural affinity for reaching out to help others whether they were the two- or four-legged variety. Her favorite projects involved working with dogs, but she also enjoyed performing random acts of kindness by helping neighbors and offering compassion to others in their darkest moments.

On one such occasion, a local teen died in an accident. Kaylee took the initiative and suggested that the mentoring group do something to show support for the family. She even paid a personal visit to the family to deliver a gift prepared by all the program’s participants.
