One Intervention, Big Impact: Annual Report FY 2022 - The Bridge Youth & Family Services

Page 1

2022YEARINREVIEW

Dear Friends,

Our doors have opened thousands of times with the coming and going of children and families looking to heal trauma, gain clarity, and mend family relationships. The impact of our team is inspiring and is paralleled by the strength and resiliency of our children and families.

This past year was met with tremendous successes. The Bridge began accepting Medicaid. We opened a therapy office at the CRC on Rand Road to reduce transportation barriers, and we extended our office hours to include Friday evening and Saturday hours.

Our goal this past year has been to strengthen partnerships, focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to evaluate the gap in service delivery so that our services are the most accessible for our community.

Our Family Stabilization team faced the greatest challenges this past year which included the

growing number of unaccompanied minors in our area, a shifting intervention landscape at the state level, and a shortage of available beds in our local youth shelters. Our team has evolved as a result; they work tirelessly across state lines to find safe havens for some of our youth, partner with our local hospitals to engage families in discharging children from psychiatric care, and provide intensive support to maintain families who are and remain on the brink of breakdown. I remain humbled by the embrace of our donors, volunteers, and our partners. We thank you for joining us in our mission, for furthering the dialogue about mental health, and for ensuring access to services for all.

Yours in service,

FAMILY STABILIZATION PROGRAM: Crisis Functioning Checklist

The Crisis Function Checklist allows a numeric score, from 1 to 60, to be assigned indicating a client’s functioning at the initial crisis contact, and again at termination. This checklist evaluates the client’s functioning in the areas of family, school, substance abuse, emotional, cognitive and social interactions.

FAMILY STABILIZATION PROGRAM: Family Reunification

THE BRIDGE AT WORK

The Individual Their Interpersonal Relationships

HEALING

Connecting through talk-, art-, and play-based interactions, The Bridge counselors help heal children and teens of all ages and of all backgrounds. Youth in counseling are empowered to work through past traumas and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.

RESILIENCE

Our culturally sensitive, trauma-informed team employs Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and other interventions to supply each youth in need with a personal collection of coping mechanisms and healthy outlets to pull from as they move through life.

FUTURE

Youth who receive these interventions are better prepared to deal with life’s stressors and lead happier, healthier lives— both in the present and the long term. Treatment is provided on a sliding fee scale so that families never have to choose between mental health care and their other basic needs.

The Whole Community

HEALING

The Bridge Youth Mentoring program pairs opportunity youth with positive adult role models who volunteer their time. Youth participants in the program are ages 11-15 and have been identified as more vulnerable for truancy, school drop-out, drug use, and/or police involvement if an intervention does not occur.

HEALING

Our partners in education, healthcare, and law enforcement can call upon our Family Stabilization Team 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As mental health specialists, The Bridge intervenes to de-escalate and repair the situation which could involve a lock-out, runaway, or other family crisis.

RESILIENCE

Through one-on-one activities with their assigned mentor and group activities with their peers, teens and pre-teens make meaningful connections and strengthen their social skills. Mentoring has proven to keep young people motivated, engaged, and participating in pro-social life activities.

FUTURE

With 2023’s introduction of Prep University, The Bridge is setting high school juniors and seniors up on a path to success. The career and college-readiness curriculum connects students with the resources, guidance, and inspiration needed to thrive as young adults.

RESILIENCE

To prevent re-occurring crisis, The Bridge supports the family through the longer-term healing needed to move forward together. Positive communication between family members is re-established and plans for follow-up care at The Bridge or referrals to other community services are made.

FUTURE

With a 97% success rate, Family Stabilization aims to prevent the breakdown of families. Because our focus is maintaining and strengthening the family unit, we successfully deflect from Department of Children and Family Services (temporary custody) and Juvenile Justice (detention center) placement.

is a powerful expression tool and can help kids process their feelings. Teens may find the act of creating art therapeutic and soothing. In December, we asked clients to interpret this general theme into a piece of original artwork. How does coming to The Bridge positively impact a child or teen’s life? The young artists were asked to think about the positive changes they’ve experienced since coming for services, how seeing their therapist or mentor makes them feel, and what they are looking forward to in the future thanks to The Bridge.
