nce again this year, Línea Directa is very pleased to form part of the 2018 National Bowls Championship.

After speaking to many of last year’s entrants the feeling was that if we reintroduced single sex disciplines the numbers would increase, so this year we have tried this format but it has made little difference to the entries.

The number of bowlers in Spain continue to gradually fall, as existing players become older and stop playing, or go back to the U.K. and these are not being replaced by new members, and we are still having difficulties in attracting Spaniards to our game.

We all love our game and should do our best to encourage new people to start to play, otherwise the numbers will continue to decline, which will then affect all of us as greens become unprofitable to the owners.

In each province, Almeria, Malaga and Alicante there is plenty of support for local leagues and competition, and since the introduction of the Regional Federation fee we have received

increased subsidies from the local Federations (F.A.B. and F.B.C.V.) which has helped with our finances, however we still have difficulties organising interregional friendly competitions.

World Bowls are still trying to become full members of the International Olympic Committee, but are encountering difficulties as the criteria for membership keeps altering, but they are still hopeful, even if it is going to take a longer time than anticipated.

I would like to thank the owner of Emerald Isle for offering the green at a very special rate, as well as a buffet for the winners, and also to the club for providing the co-ordinators during the championships.

My thanks also go to the organising committee, particularly Suzi Cooper who has worked so hard with the schedules, as well as many other aspects of the organising, also to the CBUMA for providing Umpires and markers, and to Kevin Reardon of THE LEADER for all his help in advertising for the event, and production of this programme without charge.

Spanish National Championships 2018 - Conditions of Play

All games will be played to the Laws of Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark Edition 3 Ladies & Men’s 4 Bowl Singles and 4 Bowl Pairs, Men s & Ladies 4 Bowls Pairs and Men s & Ladies 3 Bowl Triples

the draw will have the choice of changing stickers.

Stickers must be adhered to the bowls in line with Law 52.1.8

In any game that becomes mathematically impossible to win the trailing team MUST concede.

Games to be played between 12th May and 26th May 2018 and players must be available for the whole of this period. Subject to weather delay the event will finish 24th.

Venue: Emerald Isle Bowls Club All competitors must be a fully paid up member of the Federacion Espanola de Bolos (F.E.B.) and must have the minimum of a paid up green fee membership of a club affiliated to the F.E.B., from the closing date for entries, 31st January 2018 until the conclusion of the National Championships 2018.

In team events all players at the time of entry must be members of the same club and have their Federation membership with that club.

All games will be played on a "Knockout" basis, Pairs &Triples: 18 Ends. Singles: first to 21 shots.

Practice will be allowed at the Host-Venues at the stipulated times. Once the National Championships have commenced anyone practicing at the Host-venues will be disqualified. If a player or team that has not yet played is due to meet a player or team that has already played on the same day, the player or team that has not yet played can practise provided (a) the Controlling Body gives approval, (b) there is enough time available without delaying the competition, (c) the Controlling Body allocates the rink on which a player or team can practise (where possible they should allocate the same rink as the player or team have already played on.)

Players will NOT be allowed to play on the same rink on the same day.

Rinks to be used: All rinks will be in the draw up to the semi-finals and finals. The Controlling Body can restrict the rinks to be used at this stage.

The team entered into the draw will be deemed to be the SUBSTANTIVE team, replacement players to the substantive team are allowed as follows:-

Players are asked to be prompt and arrive at the venue 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start times. Any player arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time, or re-scheduled start time of a game, will be disqualified.

Pre-competition: Pairs 1 Replacement Triples 2 Replacements.

1 trial end in each direction before each game as per Law 5.1

During every game there MUST be at least one of the original substantive team playing.

Visits to the Head: There are no restrictions on visits to the head in team disciplines.

In Singles no head visits will be allowed until after 2 bowls of each player have been delivered.

No replacement will be allowed in Singles.

Time Wasting: It is essential that all players understand that with the large programme of games their co-operation is required. Therefore, if the officials consider any player is time wasting they may take any action they consider necessary to remedy the situation.

Dress Code:

Between Rounds: Pairs and Triples 1 Replacement only.

Replacement players must fulfil the entry conditions above and cannot have already played in the same discipline, or have been a member of any substantive team in that discipline.

A Substitute may be allowed in line with Laws 33.3, 33.4 and 33.5 REPLACEMENT - is a change of player BEFORE the mach has started and may play in any position, including Skip.

SUBSTITUTE - is a change of player DURING the match but cannot Skip.

Men & Ladies: Long tailored trousers or Bermuda length shorts. Bowling skirts, skorts or tailored cut-offs may be worn by Ladies. Shirts must have sleeves and a collar.

Club Coloured bottoms and shirts, or whites may be worn. In all team disciplines all members of the whole team must be similarly attired in the same colours.

Changes to the substantive team pre-competition and between rounds are "Replacements" they are not "Substitutes". Substitutes during a game who continue to play in the next round of the competition will then be regarded as a REPLACEMENT.

Footwear: Flat smooth-soled heel-less footwear, designed for bowling, is to be worn.

If footwear NOT designed for bowling is purchased then they MUST have a flat smooth heel-less sole added. Sandals and other open shoes MUST have a back strap.

Where a player/team is found to be in default of the competition rules, they will be disqualified from the competition and the non-offending player/team in the previous match will progress to the next round.

All composition bowls (see law 52.1.1) must bear a legible stamp which has an expiry date of 1985 or later.

Controlling Body: The Controlling Body at each venue will be defined as the following:-

All bowls used in the competition up until the semi-finals must carry club stickers from the club through which the player has entered the competition. For the singles discipline, if both players are from the same club, the first named player may be asked to use stickers provided by the controlling body. All singles players must ensure they have sufficient club stickers to put back onto their bowls should this situation arise.

For semi-finals and finals, stickers will be provided by the controlling body. At this point, should opposing teams have the same colour sticker, the first named team in

The Co-ordinator at the venue, the duty umpire at the venue, and at least one member of the Championship Committee, who will be responsible for resolving any issues arising on the day.

Great finals day at Línea Directa Champion of Champions T his years’ event was run from 16th to 22nd April with matches being played at Quesada for all days and at San Luis for the first 3 days. Although the weather stayed fine most days were windy or even very windy.

By Saturday afternoon we were able to play the first 2 finals which were the Mixed Pairs and the Ladies Pairs.

The Mixed Pairs was played between Pat McEwan & Steve Cantley of San Miguel and David Blackie & Jean Cooper of La Siesta. Despite having played great bowls upto the final David & Jean never got into their stride allowing Pat & Steve to win after just 14 ends.

The Ladies Pairs between Lynne Eldon & Chris Evans of Javea Green and Melanie Highland & Jacqui Johnston of Quesada. After 8 ends the Javea side were 8-1 up and after 12 ends they were 1-3 up. From then on they failed to score another shot with the Quesada pair taking the match 13-11.

On Sunday morning it was the turn of both Mixed Rinks & Mixed Triples. The rinks final was played between San Luis, Colin Jackson, Sabrina Marks, Keith Jones & Russell Marks and Benitachell, Rod Warnes, Linda Richards, Lynda Warnes & Jeff Richards. The Benitachell side never showed their form from previous matches with San Luis taking the hours 21-9 after 17 ends.

The Mixed Triples was another North/South battle with Javea Green, Jan Phillips, Velia Wood & Alana Phillips playing against San Miguel, Val Collier, Chris Collier & Stuart Denholm. After 13 ends the Javea team led by 14-6 only to drop 2 successive 4’s making the score 14-14.

The Javea team then picked up 4 shots and despite dropping a single on end 17 became champions by 19-15.

Onto the afternoon matches and the turn of the Mens Pairs. San Luis, Keith Jones & Russell Marks playing San Miguel, Brian Miller & Steve Cantley. The San Luis pair got off to a great start to lead 9-2 only for San Miguel to pull back to 9 all.

It was then a trading of ends until San Miguel picked up a 3 on end 16.

San Luis picked up a single on end 17 leaving them needing 2 shots to tie the game. With just 3 bowls left to play the San Luis pair held 5 only for Steve to play the perfect bowl & sit the shot bowl. Russell played his last bowl & although he got shot wood he just missed the touch to give them the shots needed & San Miguel won by a single shot.

The Ladies Singles was Benitachell, Christine Mawson against San Miguel, Mary Dyer. Mary continued her steady form shown in previous matches & took the title 21-12.

The Mens Singles was a real nailbiter. El Rancho, Richard Lee playing San Luis, Mal Hughes. After 9 ends it was 6 apiece the Richard picked up 7 shots over the next 3 ends to lead 13-6. Mal was then playing catch up and after 24 ends it was 19 shots each. Richard scored a single on the next end and after a measure got the 1 he needed on the 26th end to take the title.

Afterwards Jean Cooper thanked both greens for giving up their time.

All the participants, markers & umpires then went on to thank the coordinators at the venues, Caroline Smyth at Quesada & June Jones & Suzi Cooper at San Luis. She then thanked Suzi Cooper for the organisation of the event.

Save Lawn Bowls in the Philippines “W

hat does a picture of four ladies rolling a green have to do with saving lawn bowls in the Philippines?” I hear you ask. Well, not only are these four ladies all members of the Philippine National Team, they just happen to be World Championships medaI winners as well.

Please allow me to introduce, from left to right, Ainie Abatayo Knight (Pairs Bronze, 2012 World Championships), Sonia Yangyang Bruce, Ronalyn Redima Greenlees and Hazel Jagonoy (all Fours Bronze, 2016 World Championships).

In the picture right, the ladies are joined in weeding the green by fellow honour roll teammates, Maila Guyal Witheridge and Rosita Etang Bradborn, from those World Championships Even the club’s World Championship bronze pairs and fours teams respectively medallists take their turn on the roller and Emman Portacio who also won Bronze at the 2009 World Champion of Champions Singles.

The Death of Philippine Lawn Bowls You may think it odd that a country’s elite bowlers have to cut, roll and weed the green they train on themselves. The Philippine national squad does so voluntarily, even though none of them are employed or trained as greenkeepers. Why? Because, despite all of the international success they have achieved and medals they have won, lawn bowls in the Philippines finds itself on the verge of extinction.

Sadly, very few Filipinos have ever heard of lawn bowls, let alone seen it played. On the very rare occasions the team’s international exploits are featured in the news, the reporters have no idea what the sport is all about. As a result, instead of an expanding membership and growing number of venues, participation has significantly decreased and we find ourselves down to our last competition standard green - which is why the national team is happy to pitch in with the maintenance.

Manila’s Nomad Sports Club, who introduced the country’s first bowls green in 1982 and had more than 100 years of sporting tradition behind it, has already been lost to property developers and it looks as though our last remaining green will imminently meet the same fate.

Well, we are trying to think of creative ways to appeal to the generosity of the international lawn bowls community to help us raise funds to construct a new, public lawn bowls green. One idea has been to write an ebook for sale, with proceeds going towards Project Philippine Lawn Bowls Green.

Casa Ventura Leisure Centre Home to San Luís Bowls Club

Located in the quiet urbanisation of San Luís, not far from the Habaneras Commercial Centre and Torrevieja, Casa Ventura serves both the local expat community and Summer visitors. Facilities include a large leisure pool set in woodland, indoor and outdoor bars and a restaurant with a menu that includes Sunday Lunch.

There is a large Function Room and a new Activity Room, with mirror wall, which serves the Keep Fit, Line Dancing, Yoga, Zumba and other classes held weekly. The Wednesday Auctions are very popular and there is also a Crazy Golf Course to keep the children amused.

SAN LUÍS BOWLS CLUB, with its brand new green, is part of the complex and there is a good viewing area for spectators who can watch some of Spain's finest bowlers in action. The club is unique in having a President who is also the owner of the premises and an experienced bowler himself. It is a friendly club and new members are always welcome.

Come and discover Orihuela

O

rihuela is a tourist destination that provides visitors with a wide range of activities, ranging from excellent beaches, many championship golf courses and unique natural sites.

It has a rich historical and cultural heritage, is home to numerous monuments and has been declared as a venue of Especial Cultural Interest.

During the year the area celebrates many traditional fiestas, and it can also boast an extremely varied cuisine, both modern and tradition, which is always accompanied by exquisite local pastries.

The local government is committed to rural tourism, the care, protection and expansion of the environment, which allows visitors relax as they walk through the groves, its mountains, its paths and also enjoy its climbing trails.

There is also the Orihuela Palmeral de San Antón (San Antón Palm Grove) which is considered to be the second largest palm grove in Europe, of Islamic origin and located near the Sierra de Orihuela mountain range. This forest has great scenic value and is unique on the continent.

The coastal area has over sixteen kilometres of coastline, with the largest number of award-winning beaches in the whole community. All of the beaches can boast fine, soft, golden sand as well as the turquoise, blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Many of the beaches and coves also come highly recommended for water sports, sailing and windsurfing.

Orihuela is also famed for the wide range and quality of its golf courses, allowing players to choose the course with the characteristics that best suit their abilities, from the very beginner to courses that offer a test for the most demanding of players, making it a paradise for all lovers of this sport.

We must also mention the sport of lawn bowling, which is very popular in the area and which attracts many hundreds of visitors every year. The Emerald Isle and Vistabella Bowls Clubs are two of the most popular venues, both of which regularly host visiting

clubs from all over Europe as well as the heats and finals of the Valencian and the National Championships.

Its historical centre, which in 1969 was declared a venue of especial Historic interest, is another of the most visited attractions along with the ‘Miguelico route’ (La senda del Poeta / The Path of the Poet)

which takes you through the historic part of the city and is focused on the life of the Internationally renowned poet, Miguel Hernández, who was born in Orihuela.

In short, you will find that Orihuela is a tourist destination that has something for all tastes, combining Culture with Beaches, Golf and Gastronomy.
