WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE VALENCIAN DELEGATE

I

n this, the most exceptional of circumstances I am pleased to welcome you to the 12th Valencian Championships which again has been sponsored by Linea Directa to whom we are very grateful for supporting us despite all the upheaval.

Although the entries are not as many as usual, I fully understand the reluctance of some bowlers to take part in competitions whilst there is so much uncertainty, but every precaution to ensure the safety of the competitors has been taken and with everybody acting sensibly it should be an enjoyable competition. The FBCV continue to support us and have returned a fair proportion of the Federation fees, which, hopefully, will allow us to continue the €3 reduction in this fee which we started last year. Any decision on this reduction will be made by the LLB in the next few months. My thanks go to the players, committees and owners of the host clubs who have kindly allowed us to use their greens and facilities. I give special thanks to John O’Brien, the Competition Secretary who has put so much work into the organisation of this event which

has been made even more difficult this year due to restrictions imposed by the Valencian government regarding the maximum number of players allowed on the green. I also thank the co-ordinators at each venue as well as well as all the Umpires and Markers all of whom also have more responsibility this year ensuring that all hygiene measures are observed. Finally, I give my sincere thanks to Kevin Reardon and the staff at the Leader, who, not only sponsored this programme, but support us throughout the whole of the year with extensive coverage of our Sport. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can during the Competition and wish everybody the best of luck, but, above all, enjoy the occasion.

Bob Donnelly

COMPETITION SECRETARY ‘LEARNING CURVE’. Welcome to the Valencian Championship for 2020. This year will be a learning curve for all of us, with the necessity to “Social distance” whilst sharing a rink with others.

with many bowlers entering multiple disciplines, we will still be very busy. We have all missed out on 3 to 4 months bowling this year and with the loss of the summer leagues, for many of us this is the first competition of 2020.

Not an easy thing to do when you consider that under normal circumstances bowlers tend to be a friendly bunch.

I would just like to wish you all the very best of luck and I hope you have an enjoyable Comp.

Entries are down a little on last year, which is not surprising under the circumstances, but fortunately

John O’Brien

See you on the green.

Trip of a lifetime ruined by Coronavirus

W

hen I won the Singles National Title, no-one was more surprised than me. I had said that if I ever won it again I would go and represent Spain in the CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS where ever it was being held in the world. This year it would have been Adelaide, Australia. I was so excited so I booked it last December and was already making plans to visit my family in Melbourne and my good friends, in the Wollongong, New South Wales. But alas, it wasn’t to be. As the Coronavirus took hold, I was beginning to realise that the chances of me going to Australia were getting slimmer day by day. Eventually, my flights were cancelled, so there was nothing I could do about it. To say I was disappointed is an understatement, but so be it. At least Harry and I are well and that is all that matters. I have been offered the opportunity to play for Spain next year, but the venue has been moved to New Zealand. The distance is much further away and it would cost me a lot more money to get there, so I have made the decision to forgo the game and stay in Spain. My heart is not in it anymore. I would just like to thank everyone who chipped in toward my fundraising and to say that all the gifts and monies donated will be given to the homeless. It's all so disappointing but you never know what life's going to throw at you next.

2019 Spanish National’s winner PETA RHODES was Adelaide bound.

LEVANTE LAWN BOWLS GENERIC COVID 19 PROTOCOL Summary for translation and presentation to the Town Hall. Lawn Bowls is a sport predominantly played by people over 65 years of age. The objective of this protocol is to provide a safe environment in which these federated bowlers may play league or other matches against different clubs while there is still the issue of Covid 19. This means: Social distancing should be maintained whenever possible of at least 1.5m, It is recommended that players wear masks. Players will sanitise their hands on arriving at the venue, before leaving the venue and regularly during the match, Equipment to be used will be kept to a minimum, with the minimum number of people handling it and no personal equipment being shared, All match equipment will be sanitised before and after a match, There will be no physical contact between players who are not from the same household. This is a minimum protocol which must be applied. This protocol will apply to all league matches and any match which comes under the direction of the LLB. The LLB may impose sanctions on any club or bowler found not abiding by this protocol. No spectators will be allowed in the immediate vicinity of the rinks and the number of players will be restricted to that allowed by law in the relevant area. Reserves should sit away from the playing area wherever possible. To enable track and trace, complete records of players and rinks will be maintained throughout the season and for 3 weeks after the end of the season. The use of surgical gloves is optional, but these must be sanitised in the same way as hands. PROTOCOL IN DETAIL Before travelling to the venue Players must have their own mask and should ensure they have their own hand sanitiser. No equipment may be shared so players should ensure they have everything they need. It is recommended that all personal equipment is sanitised before and after a match. Gloves are optional but must be sanitised in the same way as hands. No one with any symptoms of a fever or dry cough should enter the premises. If you feel unwell do not travel and inform your squad captain. Responsibilities of home venue Sanitiser will be provided at the entrance/exit of the venue and at each end of every rink being used. The home venue is responsible for ensuring all equipment to be used during the match is sanitised before use and placed at each rink. The designated people should wear gloves to do this which must be disposed of carefully after use. Only the callipers and long measure from the umpire’s kit may be used and these must be sanitised before the start of the match. In relation to the long measure, the case and end of the tape only to be sanitised. One jack will be provided for each lead, preferably different colours.

Where a club has sufficient mats at their disposal, 4 mats will be provided for each rink, 2 at each end, preferably of different colours for the home and away teams. Where different colours cannot be provided the letters H and A will be put on the mats using permanent marker pen to distinguish between use by the Home team or by the Away team. Where only 2 mats can be provided see point 1 under During Play. Arriving at the venue Where there is more than one entrance players must use the allocated gate to enter the bowls premises. Face masks must be worn on arrival at the venue and removed once on the area of play. Should it be necessary to leave the area of play for any reason a face mask must be worn. The Squad captains must sanitise their hands before and after completing the rink selection process and scorecards, and must use their own pens. Club scorecard holders must not be used, and the cards must be retained by the squad captain until the rinks are announced. Before Play The home Squad Captain must remind everyone that they must abide by the protocol and that skips need to agree the scorecard at the conclusion of each end. Where possible, rinks should be announced before entering the bowls green with the furthest rinks being announced first. The visiting team lead must be shown which jack is to be theirs for the match. They will be responsible for collecting that jack once scoring has been completed each end. Scorecards are to be handed to the skips of each rink who must use their own personal scorecard holders and pens. During Play Placing/picking up the mat – each team will have their own mat and hands should be sanitised before the mat is touched. Where more than one mat per end is not possible, the lead from the home team and the home skip will be responsible for placing/picking up the mat and will sanitise their hands after each action. Centring the jack – the skip must do that using their foot. If for any reason the skip has to touch the jack with his hand, he must sanitise his hands afterwards. Touchers – these may be marked using spray chalk or a chalk pen only. Ditch markers – to be placed/removed by the home team members only and hands to be sanitised afterwards. Bowls and/or jack in the ditch or out of play – the player removing them must sanitise their hands before and after. Measuring - to be undertaken by one member of each team sanitising their hands before and after. Pushers – these will be used by the home team for odd ends and the away team for even ends, by predesignated players on each rink. Others must assist by kicking bowls back. If any other person needs to use it for any reason, they must sanitise their hands afterwards and the handle of the pusher must be re-sanitised. The home team will determine whether the score-

boards will be used. Where this is the case they will be updated by the home team only. Skips should always agree the score on their cards every end. If the scorecards do not agree at the end of the match and a solution cannot be reached by the two skips the result for that rink will be excluded from the score for both sides. No additional penalty will be incurred. End of Play Scorecards must be agreed by the two skips and each must sign their own card. In order that afternoon games are not held up, players must change their shoes and collect all their personal belongings as quickly as possible using either end of the green if they feel necessary. Players must sanitise their hands on leaving the green using their own sanitiser or that provided by the club. No afternoon player may enter the green until it is completely clear of the morning players. All personal rubbish must be taken away from the venue and disposed of properly by the individual. All equipment is to be left in situ tidily at one end of the rink. The designated people from the home team will collect the equipment and sanitise it. Where there is an afternoon game the designated people from that afternoon team will be responsible for sanitising all of the equipment before play commences and at the end. When sanitising equipment, gloves should be worn and disposed of safely after use. Record Keeping The captain of each team must retain a record of who played on which rink for the whole season and for 3 weeks after the end of the season. Should a squad member be diagnosed with Covid19 the squad captain must be informed. He is responsible for informing the Club Committee and the opposition squad captain. The Captains must inform Bob Donnelly immediately. All squad members must be informed. Drinks Individuals will be responsible for identifying and safeguarding their own drinks. At those venues where individuals may bring their own drinks, these must be kept in their respective bowls bag. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR CLUBS Sanctions Any individual or club who disregards the protocol may be subject to sanctions by the LLB which could involve expulsion from the league. Common Sense Common sense must prevail, and players should politely remind each other about the protocol if necessary. We are all getting older and will forget something from time to time, especially when getting involved in a match. Issues that continue should be referred to the skips on the rink and then to the squad captains. Town Hall Approval To safeguard the owners and committee of each club, it is highly recommended that that the summary of this protocol at least is approved by their local Town Hall before leagues and competitions begin. This is especially important where the club has not previously had a protocol approved.

History in the making!

P

ETER MORGAN will have held the National Singles title for two years when they are next played in 2021. Rather unusual you might think, although nothing that is going on in the world at the moment is anything other than that. He still hopes to travel to represent Spain in October next year when the WORLD CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS FINALS are held in Christchurch New Zealand although, at this stage, because of the many unknowns, no firm decision has yet been made. Having spent over £3000 on flights to take them to the 2020 tournament, which was scheduled to be held in Adelaide next month, Peter and his wife were both extremely disappointed when the event was cancelled. Not only because of the experience of playing against some of the world's best lawn bowlers but also because they had plans to turn the trip into a long holiday, with visits to places other than Adelaide in Australia, including Singapore and Dubai. Obviously the pair were both very disappointed with the cancellation of the CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS but they appreciate the reasons why.

PETER MORGAN - Currently holder of both the Spain and Valencian Men’s Singles titles

Following the cancellation they were originally offered a voucher against future flights

which they rejected, although they have since been told they can have a cash refund, this is yet to reach their bank. Prior to moving to Spain in the summer of 2016 Peter bowled in Sussex where he enjoyed some success, winning Sussex County titles in various disciplines, as well as being selected to be part of both Middleton Cup and Liberty Trophy teams. Peter also qualified for the National finals on several occasions. Following his arrival in Spain and subsequent membership of Quesada BC, he teamed up with Paul Parkes and Terry Morgan to win the National Triples title in 2018. A year later Peter enjoyed double success, going on to win the National Singles title and, along with Terry Morgan, the National Pairs title. He was also victorious in the Valencian Championship last year, beating Martin Foulcer in the final of the Blue Ribbon event. Peter is now hoping that he can mirror last year’s success in the 2020 tournament. Although the competition has been won on a couple of occasions by 2 bowlers, Colin Lindgren and Frank Close, no one has yet managed to retain the title in consecutive years. With a bye into Round One he will be hoping that 2020 will be the year when history is finally made.

away By Dave Had

Cometh the hour,

Cometh Dales Dales have been busy in recent weeks fitting new carpets at the Emerald Isle and La Marina Bowls Clubs, both of which went very well. At La Marina Stephen and Thomas from Dales were the men in charge of laying the new carpet. The old carpet and underlay came up quickly enough but the dust left behind was a completely different matter. I know it's a dry and dusty country and I think a Gota Fria would have been the best solution, but as you know the weather never does what we want, just ask any farmer. Time for Margaret's Army to come to

the fore and our thanks go to Mick X 4, Tom, John, Alex, Garth, Don, Peter and Dave X 2, with the added assistance the following day from the Ladies, Jan, Leslie and Margaret (sorry if I missed anybody), all ably supported by their spouses up in the gods. Sincere thanks to all for such a sterling effort to provide such a good clean base for the fitters to work on. Ten rolls of underlay and ten rolls of carpet, stretched and stitched later, we now have our new playing surface and new equipment all ready for a new season. The thanks of La Marina Bowls Club goes to our secretary Margaret

Margaret and Alex being pr esented with flowers and br andy from ou r president an captain for th d eir hard work on the new gr een

McLaughlin and our owner, Louisa for putting in so much effort to ensure that it all went ahead. The picture shows Margaret and Alex being presented with flowers and brandy from our president and captain for all the hard work and hours they have put in to facilitate the new green and surrounds especially in the incessant heat. Every time I have been down the club the pair were very busy doing something or other on the green and my recommendation to the members is if you catch them at the bar, perhaps thank them personally.

Spain’s representative at the World Team championships epresenting Spain in the next WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP Men’s singles, will be Tom Rogers, from the Santa Maria club in Malaga Province. Tom qualified via the fiercely fought Atlantic championships in Cardiff last year.

R

The WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS are considered to be the premier event by World bowls and take place every 4 years. Originally scheduled for May 2020, they have been postponed to later next year because of Coronavirus. They will take place on Goldcoast, near Brisbane, Australia. The leading host club will be Broadbeach which also hosted the Commonwealth games in 2018. “World bowls clearly had no choice but to delay the event” said Tom, but it did cause him

difficulties as he had already booked flights, accommodation and transport. As well as securing some good practice facilities. Tom is still looking forward to the event next year and to playing against many of the World’s finest singles players. Current World men’s singles champion is Shannon McIlroy of New Zealand. Tom commented, “There are no easy games at World bowls level and every game requires the utmost concentration and focus”. The bowls playing nations of the world have been whittled down to the top 24 in each discipline. The format of the singles is sectional with two groups of 12. Players meet all other opponents in their section and the top three

progress to the later stages of the tournament. Tom has represented Spain for several years and played in the previous WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS in Christchurch, New Zealand, 4 years ago, where the Spanish team achieved excellent results. Tom has also played in World Cup singles, European championships and Atlantic championships events. He plans to travel to the event early, as practice on the fast Australia grass greens is essential. He is hoping his experience from previous major events
