Cub is this years main Host and is assisted by Bonalba Bowls Club as the second venue. Both of these clubs have just been fitted with new carpets in the past few weeks, so I will be looking for new excuses as to why my bowls are not going where they are supposed to go. If your coming along to spectate this year, you will enjoy some excellent competitive bowling, also both venues have excellent parking facilities. To all of this years competitors, I wish you all the best of luck and hope that you have an enjoyable Re-captime.

So what is the LLB - what does it do - how does it work - who runs it?

All the Officers ensure that all Laws, Rules & the Constitution are followed correctly.

LEVANTE LAWN BOWLS

The LLB has two sections :

June Jones

THE OFFICERS - who are elected each year at an AGM - and are the worker force responsible for organising leagues, arranging major events such as the Champion of Champions and the Valencian Championships, organising tours from the UK, taking care of the finances, keeping fully up to date membership records for each club, maintaining records of all that transpires at meetings and keeping all clubs fully up to date. Their work is behind the scenes and not always noted.

Officers may propose changes to these BUT have NO voting rights - not even for their own proposals.

At present the LLB hold seven meetings a year (one of which is the AGM) where clubs - 18 of us, 6 from north Alicante and 12 from south Alicante - meet to discuss any issues that have arisen, report on the outcome of leagues and plan for the future.

THE DELEGATES - are the selected person(s) from each club who attend all meetings, reporting back to their members. They can put forward proposed changes from their club, which are discussed at an EGM or AGM and voted on accordingly - the Delegates are therefore (on behalf of their club) the decision makers for the LLB.

It is a way of keeping us all in touch and working towards our goal of playing competitive bowls in a happy friendly environ-

The LLB - began life in January 1997 being the merger of the CBBA (Costa Blanca Bowls Association started in March 1990) the FBCV (Bolos de la Comunidad Valencia which from December 1990 enabled bowlers to join and take part in separate federated events) and SABA (South Alicante Bowls Association formed in 1998). From then all bowlers who wished to take part in any interclub event under the auspices of the LLB had to be federated.

The Mixed Pairs had Chris & Dennis Wright of Bonalba take on Lisa & Peter Bonsor of Greenlands. The Bonalba pair didn’t find their form of the previous matches, so Lisa & Peter romped to a huge win 31-7.

competition competition roundup roundup

In the Mixed Triples the home side of Sue Bosworth, Peta Rhodes & Andy Miles were against the Country Bowls trio of Sheena Mallet, Dennis Wade & John Mallet. It was a close match but the Country Bowls team won the final 3 ends to take the title, 16-12. This is the second year that the triples has been won by a Country Bowls team.

The 2021 Valencian Championships came down to the wire with the Finals of each discipline.

The Mens Pairs brought together 2 strong pairings in Martin Foulcer & Ian Kenyon of Vistabella and John O’Brien (Competition Secretary) & Peter Bonsor of Greenlands. This match was always going to be a close match & it proved to be so. The scores were level at 5 each, 10 each & 12 each before the Greenlands pairs won 5 of the remaining 6 ends to take the win 19-13.

After a short break it was the turn of the Mens & Ladies Singles. In the Ladies it was Peta Rhodes (past Valencian & National Champion) against Lisa Bonsor. Peta started off quickly scoring 13 shots, but then Lisa started to get back into the match. After 16 ends she was still 620 down but won the next 5 ends before Peta managed to score that elusive 21st shot and take the game singles had the Champion of the last 2 years Peter Morgan of Quesada taking on Scott Malden of San Luis. This was a great match to watch and after 12 ends there was just a single shot between them. Again after 18 ends Peter lead by just a single shot. He went on to win 4 of the last 5 ends & take the title for the 3rd year running 21-16.

Following the games the Presentation of prizes took place and thanks were given to both host clubs, Quesada & Emerald Isle, their committees & members. Thanks were also given to the umpires & markers who gave up their time during the competition. The sponsors Linea Directa who continue to support bowls in Spain and finally John O’Brien for his work before & during the event.

Some of you may be aware that World Bowls is issuing a new law book – Crystal

Two Markers courses were run, one in April at San Luis and the other in May at Javea. With the hard work of a great many umpires, we were able to qualify 42 new markers from 12 clubs. I would like to thank everyone involved in this process as well as the management of San Luis and Javea Green who provided us with the facilities. The course material for Markers remains on the CBUMA website along with monthly brainteasers for anyone wishing to learn more or refresh their memory and skills innew.https://costablancaumpire.wixsite.com/cbuma-In2023weintendtofocusonqualifyingumpiresandwillbeintouchwithclubsthenewyear.

Enjoy the competition!

As you will be aware, the umpire’s uniform is a red shirt. We have now brought in a green shirt for markers, which means they will stand out as qualified markers at all events and recognises the hard work that goes in to passing the

World Bowls has left it to the Member National Authorities to determine when to implement the new laws and we are expecting to leave this until 1st April 2023, allowing us time to complete the Winter Season before the change. This also allows us to review the domestic regulations, get these approved by World Bowls and have the books printed. If this timescale changes, we will contact clubs via the LLB.

After a couple of years away from the job, I again took on the role of President of the CBUMA in November 2021, with Gail as secretary and treasurer and with a new team of Vice Presidents – John Pittaway representing the north of the Costa Blanca, and John O’Brien the south. Our first job was to look at the Markers Course. This course is great for anyone who wishes to learn more about the laws of the game and how to measure properly. Qualifying to mark singles games is almost a bonus! Previously, the courses were run over 3 days. Our plan was to reduce the number of days to 2 and put part of the course material onto the CBUMA website. This proved to be a popular decision, with an unprecedented number of people wanting to take the course.

Finally, a few words for the competitors in this and other competitions. Make sure you read the conditions of play, especially with regard to head visits and review the laws of rink possession which you will find on pages 15 and 16 or your red law book. Also, remember that your umpires and markers volunteer to cover these events, so a thank you is always welcome.

This year saw the format change to the format used in the World Championships and Commonwealth games – teams of 5 men and 5 women with singles, pairs, triples and fours being played. That said, like the World Championships, countries did not have to enter all the disciplines and could choose to enter as many or as few as they wished. This format was welcomed by the vast majority of Spaincountries.entered a full team -

Playing on grass always tends to cause difficulty for Spain, as it does other countries who constantly play on carpet. What made it all the worse, though, was, surprisingly, the condition of some of the greens at Northfield. They proved to be very heavy and in some cases, almost unplayable. But it was what it was and the players all tried 100% to adapt as best they could. Spain also had to contend with illness leading at times to players being unable to play OR play whilst feeling very unwell. Spain’s main target for the championships was to finish in the top 10 in the team event and push for, if not qualify for the Semi finals in a couple of disciplines. In general terms, all targets were met, but with a bit of luck it could have been a whole lot better.

Thereafter, they only lost one other game, which was against Scotland. They finished in third place, just one point behind Ireland.

In the pairs, triples and fours, unfortunately, with Lisa, Carol, Debbie all suffering from illness, the teams struggled badly and couldn’t fulfil their potential, despite Gillian coming in to substitute for various players at different times. In the pairs, the women finished 4th, 6th in the triples and fours. In the team event out of 17 countries, the men finished a very creditable 5th behind Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and Israel. The women finished in 11th position. Overall, Spain finished 9th. Once again, grass proved to be a big problem for Spain. Illness also affected the squad and didn’t make things any easier. The men did very well and could have qualified in at least 2 of the disciplines. That aside, the players could not be faulted for their efforts for which they can be very proud. A lot of experience was gained at the championships, which will serve Spain well in the Nextfuture.year, in April, Spain will be entering a new mixed pairs tournament which will be hosted in Tenerife, and the World Indoors Championships in Warilla. There is also the World Championships being held in August in the Gold Coast, Australia. Those competitions are over and above the normal test matches Spain will be involved in. During the coming months regular training sessions will be held by the International Squad. I would encourage anyone who wishes to be considered to contact me –graham.cathcart@me.com

In the team event out of 17 countries, the men finished a very creditable 5th behind Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and Israel. The women finished in 11th position. Overall, Spain finished 9th.

WOMEN - Carol Broomfield (Singles and Pairs), Debbie Colquhoun (Pairs and Triples), Lisa Bonsor (Triples and Fours), Hazel Brown (Triples and Fours), Jenny Thompson (Triples and Fours) and Gillian Atkinson (Substitute)

24

In the Triples, Craig Lewis, Tom Rogers, and Graham Cathcart got off to a great start winning their first game comfortably. However, in their second game, they lost against the Netherlands, a game they should have won. That meant they had to beat at least one of the top two seeds in the group (England and Scotland). It wasn’t to be and they too finished 3rd in their group.

MEN - Graham Cathcart (Triples and Fours), Tom Rogers (Singles and Triples) Pete Bonsor (Pairs and Fours), Graham Shoots (Pairs and Fours) and Craig Lewis (Triples and Fours).

Tom Rogers, who played in the singles, was drawn in a hard section. He got off to a great start, winning 2 out of his 3 games on the first days play, but then came unstuck.

In the womens disciplines Carol Broomfield played in the singles and won 2 of her first 3 games, losing to England. Carol was playing well and was in with a shout but unfortunately, come day 2 Carol started suffering from the same illness that had blighted other squad members. Despite this Carol still managed to finish 6th in her group.

The European Bowls Championships was played recently in Ayr, Scotland. It was the first time the Championships were played under the auspices of Bowls Europe Ltd.. Previously, when the E.B.U. had organised the tournament, it was run as a mixed pairs and mixed rinks tournament.

Playing against some excellent opponents Tom ended up finishing 9th. In the Pairs Graham Shoots and Pete Bonsor, were up against it as Pete had to play whilst being ill. They narrowly lost their first game against Guernsey which was to prove costly. Having played very well together, they finished 3rd in their group.

TOP TEN EUROPEAN FINISH FOR SPAIN

In the fours, Graham Shoots, Craig Lewis, Graham Cathcart and Pete Bonsor experienced misery in their first game against France which, once again that meant they had to beat at least one of the top two seeds – Ireland and Scotland – to qualify. The way they were playing they looked like they could do exactly that especially when they beat Ireland by one shot.
