L

ínea Directa we are once again delighted to be part of the Spain National Bowls Championship 2017 which takes place this year in Southern Alicante at Greenlands and Quesada Bowls Clubs.

For the second consecutive year we hope that our involvement will help to boost this popular sport for which it is necessary to have a great deal of talent as well as enthusiasm, spirit of excellence and desire for perfection.

These qualities are also a fundamental part of Línea Directa´s DNA and they have allowed us to become market leaders in the Spanish insurance sector in just over 20 years.

Furthermore, since we started to offer our services to foreign clients in 1998, we have always strived to commit the very best attention, particularly to all our English speaking clients who have become a very important part of our company and its success.

We would like to wish the very best of luck to all participants and thank you all for your keen involvement in the National Bowls Championship 2017.

NATIONAL DIRECTOR LOOKS FORWARD TO BIGGER AND BETTER TOURNAMENT

O

nce again, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to our 23rd National Championships, which has once again been sponsored by Línea Directa, one of the leading Vehicle and Home Insurers in Spain. With their sponsorship from last year we have dramatically reduced entries fees in order to increase entries, which has resulted in an increase of 65, with representatives from Tenerife, Malaga, Almeria and Valencia regions.

Last year saw the introduction of a Regional fee, that everybody who plays in inter club Competitions etc. is now paying, which is a legal requirement in Spain for all levels of Sport.

From this fee we should receive increased subsidies from the Regional Governments in the future, which should help. However, we are still not receiving any assistance from the Sports Council, or the FEB, but as we only have approx. 130 fully federated players we do not have much influence at National level. World Bowls are progressing with their application to become a full member of the International Olympic Committee, which is receiving good support, and, if

successful, this will give us a much greater profile here in Spain. One of our biggest problems is that we have virtually no Spanish bowlers, and unless this is corrected, we will always struggle to be fully accepted, so we should all make an extra effort to correct this by inviting the Town Halls, and other Spanish Sporting Clubs to an Open day to show everybody our Sport.

I would like to thank the owners of Greenlands and Quesada for very kindly offering to waive their fees for this year, which has help to avoid losing money on the Tournament. Also to Jackie Breslin for gaining many other Sponsors, to my hard working Committee, to Fred Willshire of the CBUMA for arranging the Umpires, and to Kevin Reardon of THE LEADER for all his assistance in advertising and preparing this programme.

Conditions of Play All games will be played to the Laws of the Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark Edition 3 Ladies & Men’s 4 Bowl Singles and 4 Bowl Pairs, Mixed 4 Bowls Pairs and Mixed 3 Bowl Triples Games to be played between 13th May and 27th May 2017 and players must be available for the whole of this period.

Venues: Greenlands Bowls Club & Quesada Bowls Club.

All competitors must be a fully paid up member of the Federacion Espanola de Bolos (F.E.B.) and must have the minimum of a paid up green fee membership of a club affiliated to the F.E.B., from the closing date for entries, 31st January 2017 until the conclusion of the National Championships 2017.

In team events all players at the time of entry must be members of the same club and have their Federation membership with that club.

All games will be played on a "Knockout" basis, Pairs &Triples: 18 Ends. Singles: first to 21 shots.

Players are asked to be prompt and arrive at the venue 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start times. Any player arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time, or re-scheduled start time of a game, will be disqualified.

1 trial end in each direction before each game as per Law 5.1 Visits to the Head: There are no restrictions on visits to the head.

Time Wasting: It is essential that all players understand that with the large programme of games their co-operation is required. Therefore, if the officials consider any player is time wasting they may take any action they consider necessary to remedy the situation.

Dress Code: Men & Ladies: Long tailored trousers or Bermuda length shorts. Bowling skirts, skirts or tailored cut-offs may be worn by Ladies. Men s and Ladies shirts must have a collar, however Ladies shirts may be sleeveless.

Club Coloured bottoms and shirts, or whites may be worn. In all team disciplines all members of the whole team must be similarly attired in the same colours.

Footwear: Must be smooth flat soled, designed for bowling. Sandals and open shoes must have a back-strap.

All composition bowls (see law 52.1.1) must bear a legible stamp which has an expiry date of 1985 or later.

All bowls used in the competition up until the semi-finals must carry club stickers from the club through which the player has entered the competition. For the singles discipline, if both players are from the same club, the first named player may be asked to use stickers provided by the controlling body. All singles players must ensure they have sufficient club stickers to put back onto their bowls should this situation arise.

For semi-finals and finals, stickers will be provided by the controlling body. At this point, should opposing teams have the same colour stickers, the first named team in the draw will have the choice of changing stickers. Stickers must be adhered to the bowls in line with Law 52.1.8 In any game that becomes mathematically impossible to win the trailing team MUST concede.

Practice will be allowed at the Host-Venues at the stipulated times. Once the National Championships have commenced anyone practicing at the Host-venues will be disqualified. If a player or team that has not yet played is due to meet a player or team that has already played on the same day, the player or team that has not yet played can practise provided (a) the Controlling Body gives approval, (b) there is enough time available without delaying the competition, (c) the Controlling Body allocates the rink on which a player or team can practise (where possible they should allocate the same rink as the player or team have already played on.)

Players will NOT be allowed to play on the same rink on the same day.

Rinks to be used: All rinks will be in the draw up to the semi-finals and finals. The Controlling Body can restrict the rinks to be used at this stage.

The team entered into the draw will be deemed to be the SUBSTANTIVE team, replacement players to the substantive team are allowed as follows:Pre-competition: Pairs 1 Replacement Triples 2 Replacements.

Between Rounds: Pairs and Triples 1 Replacement only.

During every game there MUST be at least one of the original substantive team playing.

No replacement will be allowed in Singles.

Replacement players must fulfil the entry conditions above and cannot have already played in the same discipline, or have been a member of any substantive team in that discipline.

A Substitute may be allowed in line with Laws 33.3, 33.4 and 33.5 REPLACEMENT - is a change of player BEFORE the match has started and may play in any position, including Skip.

SUBSTITUTE - is a change of player DURING the match but cannot Skip.

Changes to the substantive team pre-competition and between rounds are "Replacements" they are not "Substitutes". Substitutes during a game who continue to play in the next round of the competition will then be regarded as a REPLACEMENT. Where a player/team is found to be in default of the competition rules, they will be disqualified from the competition and the non-offending player/team in the previous match will progress to the next round.

Controlling Body: The Controlling Body at each venue will be defined as the following:The Co-ordinator at the venue, the duty umpire at the venue, and at least one member of the Championship Committee, who will be responsible for resolving any issues arising on the day.

POINTS NOT PROVIDED FOR: Any points not provided for in the above rules and conditions of play will be decided by the Championship Committee (or emergency Committee thereof) whose decision shall be final.

Lost Pension - My Story

T

here have been many articles written regarding lost or frozen pensions recently, both in the papers and social media. I am sure many people think the stories of people coming across hither-to unknown pensions are at best exaggerated and at worst just false.

If I did not work with financial advisers, I would also assume the stories were just advertising gimmicks.

Having written many articles urging people to contact us if they worked for a company with a pension scheme for two or more years to see if they have a pension fund, I thought I should probably take my own advice. I worked for a bank in the city of London for two years, although I was only a member of the pension scheme for eighteen months, so I asked my colleague to investigate if I had any money in the scheme. I did not expect anything to come back, or if so, only around a couple of thousand

pounds. Imagine my surprise, when the scheme administrators, sent back the value - an amazing Twenty Six Thousand Pounds!!

This will now provide a very nice boost to my pension, when I am able to access it. In the meantime, it is invested and will hopefully grow further.

Pension Scheme administrators only have to make one effort to trace members before the money is absorbed into the scheme. If you worked in the UK and now reside here in Spain, there is every possibility that your money is waiting for you to make a claim.

B

y the time you get your hands on this programme the 2017 Championships will be underway for which, once again, Línea Directa has kindly agreed to be the main sponsor. Their kind support has allowed the Organisers to offer a lower entry fee, which, in turn, has resulted in a 20% increase in entries.

You will note that the entries are mainly from Alicante, which is the largest Region, but there are also bowlers travelling up from Almeria, Malaga and across from Tenerife.

The opening ceremony is sure to be a grand affair, being held as it is at Greenlands Bowls Club on Saturday the 13th May at 11.30 where the bowlers will then play daily until the 21st, after which the competition will move across to Quesada Bowls Club, culminating in the Finals on Saturday 27th.

Although he has a bye through to round one, if last year’s Men’s Champion Martin Foulcer of Vistabella is to retain his title he will have to overcome one of the region’s most consistent bowlers in Stuart Hemmings of San Miguel while, in the Ladies section, 2016 winner Ann Eagle won’t be relishing an opening round tie with Ann Marie Stevenson of the Emerald Isle who just two weeks ago

Located in the quiet urbanisation of San Luís, not far from the Habaneras Commercial Centre and Torrevieja, Casa Ventura serves both the local expat community and Summer visitors. Facilities include a large leisure pool set in woodland, indoor and outdoor bars and a restaurant with a menu that includes Sunday Lunch.

There is a large Function Room and a new Activity Room, with mirror wall, which serves the Keep Fit, Line Dancing, Yoga, Zumba and other classes held weekly. The Wednesday Auctions are very popular and there is also a Crazy Golf Course to keep the children amused.

SAN LUÍS BOWLS CLUB, with its brand new green, is part of the complex and there is a good viewing area for spectators who can watch some of Spain's finest bowlers in action. The club is unique in having a President who is also the owner of the premises and an experienced bowler himself. It is a friendly club and new members are always welcome.

New coach moving Spain in the right direction

We still have a long way to go although I am happy that we have made large inroads and I am now putting trials and training session in across the many different regions.

The players in the squad have adopted the new approach very well and been very supportive of it. Indeed, the squad themselves have helped shape the approach being tried. The camaraderie within the squad is absolutely brilliant and training weekends are very productive and far from boring.

J

ust over a year ago I took over the role of Spanish Squad manager wince which I have rebuilt the squad and the“backroom team” who left after the Atlantic Rim games in 2015. I also implemented a number of changes to the playing side of the squad How the squad trained How it approached matches, both in a bowling and mental sense By helping to change individual players belief systems and approach to the game Formalising how coaching was carried out By formalising squad rules etc By constantly analysing and discussing how we play By instilling more confidence in individual players by making even small tweaks, how much more they could individually achieve.

Doing so strengthens the squad as a whole.

The proof of the pudding, as they say, however, is in the eating and currently the camaraderie within the squad is absolutely brilliant.

In the past year there have been friendly matches, the World Championships in New Zealand, a full test match against a Malaga select at Indalo B.C. and the World Cup singles in Australia.

In November 2016, eleven members of the squad (Gents Team - Tom Rogers, Nick Cole, Pete Bonsor, Derek Eldon, John Pooley (Sub) and myself. Ladies Team - Lynn Eldon, Lisa Bonsor, Debbie Colquhoun, and Carol Broomfield) travelled to Christchurch, New Zealand to take part in the World Championships. It was the first time we had the opportunity to put into practice some of the “new approaches”.

Despite taking part in one less discipline the squad did itself and Spain proud scoring the highest number of points of any previous squad and beating several of the “big nations.” The Gents Triples team missed out on a medal finish by one lousy, unlucky shot that will haunt me forever.

I wanted the players, and the squad as a whole, to approach matches and training in a much more cohesive, focused and deliberate manner.

Our new beliefs now give us confidence though that we can narrow the gap between “them and us” by working to our strengths in much the same way that Leicester City proved in last year’s English Premiership.

My other major aim was to spread the “reach” of the squad and take away the perception that it was a “South Alicante select,” however fair or unfair that was.

Living, as I do, in Tenerife, this ideology is made much easier for me as I am not associated with any club or area on the mainland.

In March, Tom Rogers and Carol Broomfield travelled to Australia to represent Spain in the World Cup singles in Warilla. Both players, coached and assisted by our very own Pete Bonsor, played very well against the top players from around the world. Again they did Spain, and themselves proud.

These are only the first tentative steps on a long journey, but the signs are all positive from a squad perspective.

The Spanish Squad is well thought of in the World of Bowls both in relation to our skill level and in the manner in which we represent Spain in relation to our conduct. The days of Spain being an “easy touch” is ancient history and has been for a number of years. We look forward to making even more progress in the months and years ahead.
