australian championships O

n behalf of the Board and staff of Bowls Australia, it gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to the beautiful Club Sapphire for the third staging of the coveted Australian Championships. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Club Sapphire, its Board, staff, members, officials and volunteers for their significant contribution to the staging of this event; events like these cannot be successful without the tireless efforts by all at the host club. I’d like to pay tribute to the nine state and territory associations whose support of their players has ensured they are all represented here this week with distinction and congratulate all our state and territory champions for winning your way to this coveted event. Bowls Australia also offers our thanks to Sapphire Coast Tourism for their assistance with the planning and staging of this competition. Regardless of what happens this week I know spectators will be treated by a wonderful display of bowls and the upmost sportsmanship shown by all competitors. I hope you take the time to explore the Sapphire Coast region; there is so much to see and do here so enjoy your stay. To learn a little more about what the region has to offer, I encourage you to visit www.sapphirecoacst.com.au/ australian-championships Finally I wish everyone involved the best of luck for the 2019 Australian Championships and may the best teams win. lub Sapphire, Merimbula is poised to host the best edition of the Australian Championships yet, when play commences for a third consecutive year on December 2. Club Sapphire’s Bowls Development Officer, Michael Wilks told the Bega District News he was expecting quality competition when play gets underway for the final round of a three-year hosting deal for the national event. “The qualifying list reads like a proverbial who’s who of the sport’s elite with no less than 20 current and former Australian reps,” Wilks said. A former Australian Jackaroo himself, Wilks said it would be sensational to welcome visitors from across the globe particularly New Zealand, Scotland and South Africa to the region for the Championships. The Triples discipline will open the competition on December 2, followed by four full days of competition - calumniating in the newly introduction mixed pairs discipline this year. With men’s and women’s teams in contention, there are strong fields vying for the crown. In the men’s fours event, the Victorian qualifiers will be led by world fours gold medallist and current New Zealand representative Ali Forsyth, while NSW is also strongly represented with current Australian squad member Ben Twist, while South African star Eric Johannes headlines the Queensland team. The women also boast some of the best, with Jackaroo spearhead Chloe Stewart teaming up with Claire Turley

and Kira Bourke for Queensland, while NSW provide stiff opposition through 2017 triples winners Natasha Scott, Genevieve Delves and Kate Matthews. Day two is the pairs competition with defending champions Sean Baker and Jade Groenewege returning in the hope they can become the first back to back champions. New Zealand Blackjack international Katelyn Inch and former Australian Jackaroo Julie Keegan look to be the ones to beat in the women’s pairs, but they’ll have to overcome strong suiters Delves and Matthews. Former Australian Champion of Champion winner Colleen Orr will give the Northern Territory a great shot at its first gold at the Australian Championships. Wednesday will see the coveted fours crown contested, with Wilks saying the men’s field is the strongest in the three years the competition has been staged. “The women’s field appears just as even with a number of the nations best under 25’s qualifying to represent their states.” Last year’s winners from Western Australia return and will be an early favourite but face a tough day if they are to emulate last year’s performance. Queensland-based Merimbula pennant-import Kevin Anderson will compete in the blue-ribbon singles on Thursday, while Friday is the mixed pairs contest. Entry to every session is free of charge, with sectional play commencing at 8.45am daily and finals sessions commencing from 6pm each night.
