Bowdoin Career Advisory Network Newsletter A Note From Mike Moynihan ’89 Chairperson, Bowdoin Career Advisory Network (BCAN) Dear BCAN Members, Career engagement at Bowdoin is the best it has ever been. Students are far better prepared for the career search process, and the number and breadth of opportunities available to them upon graduation are extraordinary. Bowdoin Career Planning deserves tremendous credit for that, but so do you. Our dedicated alumni base is responsible for virtually all campus recruiting opportunities. We all owe a great deal of thanks to Tom Walsh, whose guidance of the Bowdoin Career Advisory Network (BCAN) during the last several years has helped foster this improvement. In taking over the humbling task of succeeding Tom as BCAN Chair, I am in the enviable position of starting from a position of significant strength. Tom will stay on to work with us in the Career Engagement sub-committee while he takes on his new role as President of the Alumni Council. To continue to help increase the value proposition offered by both the BCAN group and the liberal arts education as a whole, we, as members of BCAN, offer other members invaluable insights and opportunities through which to enhance their competitive strength in the job market or graduate school search. With your help, it will be our goal to move this value proposition forward in a few specific areas over the next year. For Students: • Improve the marketing of BCAN on campus. Earlier awareness of the existence and richness of the resource will motivate students to engage earlier.

• Increase engagement with BCAN. There are two primary ways we see this happening: > Reducing the intimidation factor for students in connecting with alums. Demystifying this seems to have potential in inspiring more students to use BCAN. > Better leveraging BCAN further “upstream” in the process. Well before networking for job opportunities, many students need sounding boards in figuring out what to pursue in the first place. For Alumni: • Use BCAN as a resource for career transition. While the primary beneficiaries of BCAN are intended to be current students, it should also be a resource to any alumni for their own career journeys. Perhaps there is an opportunity to raise awareness around that. • Enrich connection with campus through alumni networking. Bowdoin alumni contribute to campus life in many ways. We need your expertise, as well as links to job and internship postings for our students. If you enjoy networking, we encourage you to consider offering networking referrals, mock interviewing, mentoring, and job shadowing to those that reach out to you. To improve the marketing of the group, we will be enlisting the help of recent Bowdoin alumni, current students, and Career Planning staff to do focus groups in order to develop a marketing plan that will help us engage students earlier. The entire community is excited to hear the results of this undertaking. I am truly honored to be taking on this new role. The vast majority of my career has been in consumer marketing, and I’ve been fortunate to spend the last 19 years working in Marketing for The LEGO Group. The reason that I’ve been marketing LEGO toys for that long is the same reason that I have enthusiastically accepted the role of (Moynihan - continued on page 2)

(Moynihan - continued from page 1) BCAN chair: I believe passionately in both brands. In a world of increasing change, complexity and ambiguity, I believe that a liberal arts degree has never been more relevant. And the culture of Bowdoin, which celebrates humility and a focus on the Common Good, sets it apart from other elite schools. As an active recruiter at Bowdoin, I see the unique value that our students bring and I believe that the world needs Bowdoin grads now more than ever. Thanks very much for your commitment to Bowdoin and I really look forward to engaging with you in BCAN. More to come shortly, but in the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly with any ideas, suggestions or comments. I can be reached at Michael.Moynihan@LEGO.com. Sincerely,

Mike Moynihan ’89 Michael.Moynihan@LEGO.com

Alumni Career Panel: Working for Health Care Access, Education and Justice Bowdoin students have always had an interest in health care, but have often perceived a limited dual track career path: scientific research or medical practice. Increasingly, students are coming to Career Planning expressing interest in applying their skills and knowledge to improving health care in other ways – from data analysis, to program planning, to information dissemination. In October, three engaged alumni with broad and diverse experience in health care returned to campus to share their experiences and offer their thoughts on the “new wave” of health care careers aimed at helping the underserved, uninsured and overlooked populations. Don Blanchon ’86, Executive Director of Whitman-Walker Health, a community health care facility in Washington, D.C. specializing in HIV/AIDS and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender care, spoke directly about seeing and addressing health and wellness as issues of social justice. He urged students to engage in ways to repair the disparities of health care access in the U.S. and to focus on preventative care, not just sick care. As a leader, his role is to learn, listen, and process. Lisa McElaney ’77, Bowdoin College Trustee Emerita and Co-Founder of Vida Health Communications, shared her insights producing and conducting NIH sponsored research about media based interventions designed to change risk behaviors – from parenting, elder care, well child, and youth violence. She highlighted the increasing importance of technology and the need for strong writing and business skills to succeed in areas of health care. But, she added, the true value of a liberal arts education is the ability to be open to new ideas and to turn those ideas into making an impact on the lives of others. Zander Abbott ’08, Administrative Fellow at Maine Medical, brought the perspective of a recent alumnaus working within the operations side of the medical establishment. He discussed challenges and initiatives undertaken to improve preventative care, access and quality to Mainers regardless of their ability to pay – and the importance of information technology and data in the future. Zander is the treasurer for Day One, an adolescent treatment facility for substance abuse, and encouraged students to find opportunities to volunteer with health-related organizations.

A Note from Todd Herrmann ’85

Associate Director of Employer Relations, Bowdoin Career Planning

Statement of Purpose: Bowdoin Career Advisory Network Group “The purpose of this group is to encourage current Bowdoin students and alumni to connect with alumni from a wide variety of backgrounds in order to explore careers, ask questions, and discuss professional life beyond Bowdoin.” In the central atrium of Smith Union at Bowdoin College, there hangs an eleven-foot-tall banner depicting the companies and organizations to which Bowdoin interns and new full-time employees went to work this past summer. A copy of this banner appears on the last page of this newsletter. It is a distinct matter of pride that I can align the efforts of a member of the Bowdoin Career Advisory Network (BCAN) with a vast majority of those very placements. Members of BCAN take care of each other. At the time of the writing of this article, Bowdoin Career Planning has hosted 146 events on campus thus far in the 2014-15 school year. That means that during each of the 54 school days there has been an average of 2.7 events per day. Bowdoin alumni and parents have participated in approximately ninety percent of those events. Without you, Bowdoin would not be putting people to work at the best organizations throughout the world. What can we do to make this a better? – Answer: Simply continue to extend the connection. If there is an opportunity for a Bowdoin student to join you at work as an intern or full-time employee, we invite you to become one of the hundreds of Bowdoin alumni who give of their time, experience, and expertise to help students become prepared candidates for those positions and to offer them an entry portal. BCAN is also a major resource for experienced alumni looking to make a career transition. Whether you have nine months or nineteen years in a career field, BCAN has connection to markets, industries, and geographic locations to suit all needs. This resource is for alumni to use as well. If your firm is making experienced hires this year, we will be happy to make those positions visible to Bowdoin alumni. If you are a freshman or sophomore and eager to make your first foray into networking, might I suggest that you use the LinkedIn BCAN group to find students who are still on campus with whom to have your networking discussion. Sometimes it seems intimidating to reach out to a seasoned professional to request some of their time. Why not ask someone to talk about their past internship over lunch at Thorne? What better way to get candid information about a summer experience. You can then turn that discussion into talking points for more senior contacts or your cover letter. In these ways and more, BCAN helps connect members of the Bowdoin family to fulfilling futures. Thank you for being part of a team that gives of itself every day. At Bowdoin Career Planning, we are made aware every day of the generosity of the BCAN Group. Go UBears!
