Bowdoin Career Advisory Network Newsletter A Note From Tom Walsh ’83 Chairperson, Bowdoin Career Advisory Network (BCAN) Dear BCAN Members: Greetings from the combined forces of the BCAN advisory board, the Alumni Council and the wonderful, engaged staff members of Bowdoin Career Planning! I write to thank you for your past involvement with BCAN, to urge you to continue to volunteer on behalf of your College and the current undergraduates, and to update you on some of the highlights of the last few months in terms of outreach and coordination between the College, our students, and potential employers from all sectors and all corners of the globe. Now, more than ever, liberal arts colleges need to be attuned to the importance of equipping graduates with the potential to gain not only a broader understanding of how and why our world works the way it does, but also to obtain meaningful work in that world. The efforts of Bowdoin Career Planning begin early in a student’s experience on-campus. Through the dedication of the staff and the involvement of alumni, Bowdoin students are better informed and more connected to employment opportunities than ever before. During the last year alone, Bowdoin Career Planning: • Continued expansion of the Funded Internship program, an initiative that was spearheaded by members of the Alumni Council. • Conducted the third annual ‘BizTech Trek to Boston’ - 32 students visited with five alumni leaders at tech firms in Massachusetts. • Hosted Bowdoin Startup Series, inviting 12 alumni entrepreneurs and venture capitalists to campus for a foursession workshop series. Thanks to Arlyn Davich ‘03 for providing key leadership for this series. • Held Mock Interview Day on October 7th. On this day

alone, more than 85 students interviewed with alumni and community interviewers at Bowdoin to get them ready for the real deal. Mock interviews are also available at other times of year with staff members on-campus and alumni at their places of employment. • Expanded the recruiting schedule and populated the field with alumni referrals for full-time jobs & internships. • Arranged Connections events for students and alumni. In January 2014, we will host events in San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., New York City, and Boston. Please stay tuned for details about dates and locations of Connections evenings in your area. Elsewhere in this newsletter, you will see a photo of an 11’ tall banner that hangs in Smith Union. This display enumerates just a partial list of the firms, schools, and organizations that hired Bowdoin students during the past year. I think we should all be proud of our students, pleased with their preparation on all fronts, and impressed by the wide range of workplace settings in which newly minted Polar Bear alums are making their mark. Again, I want to thank you for your past involvement with BCAN. I hope you have found the same kind of fulfillment and gratification as I have from working in conjunction with young people as they make their way into the work world or when assisting a fellow alumnus with a mid-career job change. Please keep waving the BCAN banner. Be open to phone calls and e-mails from undergraduates. See if your company has room for a Bowdoin student in an internship program or a recent graduate in an entry-level position. Go U Bears!

Tom Thomas E. Walsh, Jr. ’83, BCAN National Chair

Career Planning Welcomes Alumna Cynthia ’80 to Staff Life is full of unexpected surprises and changes. It is advice we give to students as they start out on their own. Being able to adapt, react and take leaps of faith can take you places you never envisioned that enrich your life. For me, being back at Bowdoin as the career advisor is practicing what I preach. After graduating from Bowdoin (Government/Environmental Studies), my initial career focus was on natural resource policy and community engagement. Over time, my path evolved and changed into understanding how people learn, think and understand to facilitate decision-making. With a EdM from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, I segued into providing academic and career guidance to students to help them attain success and realize their goals. Before coming to Bowdoin, I was working remotely for the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University, assisting Middlebury College’s Center for Careers & Internships, and doing independent consulting. My passion for the environment never ceased, becoming the focus of my volunteer work, most recently at Shelburne Farms in Vermont. When the position in Career Planning was posted on BCAN – seeking a career advisor to assist students just beginning to explore career paths and those with specific interests in science, health and the environment – I thought it was an amazing convergence of my experience and interests. It just required a move from the mountainous beauty of Vermont to the crystalline waters of Maine – and a commuting marriage for a year! So, I have been here three months. Every day, I am impressed with the motivation, sincerity, intelligence, focus and friendliness exuded by Bowdoin students. They are well-rounded and engaged with a strong desire to work in a meaningful way – both during their summers at Bowdoin and upon graduation. We actively encourage them to reach out to the BCAN community, and I am hoping to bring more alumni back to campus for career conversations. I have no doubt that when you engage with our students, you will share my impression of the next generation of Polar Bears entering the working world. Please feel free to contact me about opportunities, insights or ideas: ckingsfo@bowdoin.edu.

A Note From Todd Herrmann ’85 Associate Director of Employer Relations, Bowdoin Career Planning

The Bowdoin Career Advisory Network is the most important tool the College has to connect students and alumni with employers. Each and every student at Bowdoin College will have the need to interact with Bowdoin alumni and friends over the course of their time here in Brunswick. Whether they are looking for information on employers, grad schools, jobs, internships, volunteer experiences, or fellowships, members can turn to BCAN for answers to any question they might have. For this offer of assistance to the future of The College, we are very, very grateful. During the past two school years, an eleven foot tall banner has been hanging in Smith Union that depicts a partial list of the names of the employers who have hired Bowdoin students for jobs and/or internships during the past school year. (See right). You’ll see from this list a vast array of offerings from every sector of the workforce. Many of these employers came to us through the connective efforts of Bowdoin alumni.

Mock Interview Day helps students prepare for the job search

C

areer Planning hosted the 4th Annual Mock Interview Day on October 18, 2013. This year, 85 seniors interested in a range of careers, from Arts to Consulting, were interviewed by local professionals who volunteered as our interviewers. Of our 20 volunteers, seven Bowdoin alumni joined us for this year’s event: • Elizabeth Cartland ’99, Director of Development, Portland Museum of Art • Steve Loebs ’60, Faculty Emeritus, College of Public Health at The Ohio State University • Dr. Peter McGuire ’62, Retired Physician, Former Medical Director of the Oasis Free Health Clinic • Lisa Miller ’83, Retired Executive, Delhaize America • Jessica Routhier ’94, President, Maine Archives and Museums • Sean Sullivan ’08, Executive Director, Maine Brewers’ Guild • Ian Yaffe ’09, Director, Mano en Mano Additionally, 50 students stopped by our “Headshot Day” photo set to get a professionally dressed photo for their LinkedIn profiles. It was a great day for the students to practice articulating how their Bowdoin education has prepared them for the professional world. How you can you get involved? As a Bowdoin alumni and workforce professional, you are a great resource for providing practice interviews for current Bowdoin students. The next time a student contacts you to network or seek advice, take it one step further and offer to set a time to conduct a mock interview via Skype. The practice opportunity, along with your valuable feedback, could make all the difference in the student’s next interview. See our Mock Interviewing Guide for more tips on mock interviewing. — Meg Springer, Assistant Director

Alumni host students for annual BizTech Trek in Boston

B

owdoin students ventured down to Boston for the annual BizTech Trek on Friday, November 8th to meet with some of the Boston area’s leading Internet, technology and entrepreneurial alumni and their companies. Each company featured an alumni host and about an hour of conversation covering topics including their career history from student to professional, challenges facing their business ventures and projects, and tips for rising stars.

This year’s stops included: • EMC in Hopkinton, hosted by Kevin Petrie ’95 • Lunch at Eze Software Group, hosted by Peter Adams ’95 and many other Bowdoin alums • Hubspot in Cambridge with CMO Mike Volpe ‘97 • CoachUp in Boston with Jordan Fliegel ‘98 • MassChallenge in Boston with John Harthorne ‘95 The eclectic group of companies, varying career paths and professional backgrounds provided students with different insights into the world of technology companies whether a start-up, growth stage company, large corporation or collaborative non-profit. It was a fun and productive day that concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Sean Marsh ’95 that featured the day’s hosts. The topic was The Technology Renaissance in Boston, and it was appropriately held at MassChallenge where over 25 start-ups are calling home for 2013. The night ended with a breakout networking session for all student and alumni attendees. A special thanks to Sean Marsh ‘95, who coordinated the day’s activities, as well as all of the day’s hosts and alumni panelists. We look forward to seeing you next fall!
