Bowdoin Career Advisory Network Newsletter A Note From Tom Walsh ‘83

Chairperson, Bowdoin Career Advisory Network (BCAN) Dear Fellow BCAN Volunteers, As I write, the last traces of winter are leaving the ground in Boston. After the rather tame winter in these parts, I am already gearing up for the annual renewal that spring promises. I also anticipate a busy, productive, and enlightening series of Alumni Council meetings on campus at the end of this month. It is my distinct pleasure to represent BCAN at Council events. With your ongoing help and commitment to the cause, Bowdoin Career Planning continues to evolve as a leading-edge office in the field. We can be proud of the collective efforts of the staff—one of the most professional, approachable, and engaging career advisory groups in the nation. We can also take pride in our extensive and ever-growing network of dedicated alumni volunteers. Our respective teams came together most recently during a series of “Connections” events, hosted by the College in Washington, D.C., New York City, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. I was delighted to be able to take part in the events in D.C. and Boston. The crowds (more than 600 in all) were sizeable and the enthusiasm from the participants—both undergraduates and alums—was palpable. One young man created a memorable impression. He resides in North Carolina but was taking advantage of each

of the East Coast events as he worked his way back up the coast to begin the second semester in Brunswick. It was if he were a groupie following a Bruce Springsteen tour (if not the Antiques Road Show!). I believe there were a few other students who were taking full advantage of these opportunities to network with Polar Bear alums. Many of the undergrads were not heading into their last semester at the College; several were heading into the spring of their sophomore year, taking care of business now because they planned to be abroad next year. Organized or what? Whether they attended one or all of the evenings, they were greeted by many alums eager to help them as they contemplate life beyond the Pines. These are great occasions, and I encourage you to try and take part whenever a Connections event comes to your part of the world. (continued on page 2)

A few other highlights that have marked the first portion of the academic calendar: • We have welcomed over 110 alumni back to campus as they coordinated career-related events • The office sponsored the first-ever Non-Profit Symposium; 76 students benefitted from the insights of an array of alumni from the non-profit world • 43 students joined the caravan for the first “Bowdoin to Boston BizTech Trek.” Thanks to the good work of Sean Marsh ’95 (Point Judith Capital), students had an opportunity to visit such major firms as: EMC, MassChallenge, Akamai and Hubspot. • The Maine Employers Career Fair drew 245 students and 40 of Maine’s top employers, each with an internship or full-time position on offer.

be earn the offer of a full-time position down the road. While Bowdoin Career Planning cannot “send you a great kid” to serve as an intern, we are more than happy to post any and all opportunities that come into the office. Based on the job/internship description, we trust that appropriate, competitive, and hopefully, compelling candidates will apply. Thanks, again, for all you do on behalf of BCAN. This area of volunteer life continues to be a way in which you can inspire, support, guide, and positively influence the College’s most precious resource: our students. Go U Bears!

Bowdoin Career Planning Hosts Nonprofit Symposium

P

rofiting from Nonprofit: Demystifying the Nonprofit Sector was hosted by Career Planning on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 and organized by Bowdoin Career Planning Assistant Director, Meg Springer. A Note From Todd Herrmann ‘85 Associate Director of Employer Relations, Bowdoin Career Planning Serving Bowdoin through Bowdoin Career Advisory Network Since the beginning of the 2011-12 academic year there have 1389 jobs and internships opened to Bowdoin students via our on-campus database, eBEAR. Please take a moment to let that sink in. If we were to use our time machine to step back to my own experience in the mid-80s at Bowdoin College, that number would be in the low hundreds. With the help of our alumni, parents, and partner employers, Bowdoin students now have an unprecedented number of opportunities open to them during their time at the College. At Bowdoin Career Planning, our goal is to prepare students for engagement in their career search by giving them the tools, practice, and experiences to make them qualified participants in the career search process before they graduate. Students are offered personalized guidance in creating a resume, learning job and internship search techniques, researching positions, acquiring necessary experience, networking and interviewing. Our office coordinates dozens of programs each month to bring career fields to life here on campus. So far this year we have had alumni and employers from the fields of journalism, entertainment, consulting, education, technology, non-profit, marketing, finance, arts, law, government and health care. What makes this array of resources possible? BCAN. The Bowdoin Career Advisory Network now has close to 2,800 members including alumni, students, members of the Bowdoin community and Bowdoin Parents. We encourage you as a member to become active within the group and offer your support to students and alumni through three core activities: 1) Offer a full-time job or internship with your firm or organization by posting it on eBEAR through Bowdoin Career Planning. 2) Network with a fellow BCAN member when they reach out for information regarding your career, employer or job offering. 3) Come to campus to speak with students about opportunities and experiences you’ve had that might be of interest to a Bowdoin student. Through these actions, Bowdoin can succeed and thrive in an ever-changing and demanding job market. With so much emphasis being put on internship experiences in today’s economy, we are looking to double the number of internship offerings we have for our students by the spring of 2013. This will mean a mobilization of the BCAN resources in an unprecedented number. We know that the BCAN community is up to this task. Please, feel free to contact either me or Sean Sullivan ‘08, Employer Relations Coordinator with any positions Have jobs or internships you can offer (ssulliva@bowdoin.edu). As always, Bowdoin Career Planning is at your service.
