Bowdoin Career Advisory Network Newsletter A note from Tom Walsh, ’83, Chairperson, Bowdoin Career Advisory Network (BCAN):

A

s I write in the midst of an old‐fashioned New England winter, the snow continues to pile up outside but the good work of the Bowdoin Career Planning and dedicated BCAN vol‐

unteers continues unabated. It is our collective energy and enthusiasm that fuels this important network, assisting the current generation of students as they prepare to move forward from be‐ neath the Pines to the “real world” beyond the beloved Bowdoin bubble. As always, thank you for everything you do in support of the College, especially for your efforts on behalf of BCAN. It has been an exciting period of growth and change in the Career Planning Center. First of all, Todd Herrmann, an alumnus from the Class of 1985, has joined the team as our Associate Direc‐ tor of Employer Relations. Todd brings a wealth of professional experience and a personal com‐

mitment to the College to his work in the CPC. He has been connecting with alumni in different fields and in different regions, as well as new corporate partners from around the country. Despite the persistent challenges of our national economy, recruiting on‐campus is up over 15% from last year; as the second semester commences, the calendar for recruitment meetings has never been so full. Our early steps into the realm of technology—through Web‐based vehicles like Polar Net and LinkedIn—have started to pick up pace. Recently, we have opened a new subgroup for Bowdoin Parents under the BCAN banner on LinkedIn. Invitations have been sent out and we are hopeful for a strong return, potentially extending our “connectivity” by 20%. We have, at last check, more than 1850 LinkedIn members and we are aiming to approach 2000 by the end of the academic year. Spread the electronic word among your Bowdoin classmates and friends! Always remember that our collective life experiences can provide essential assistance to young people as they look to gain a foothold in their professional lives. What we share comes back to us many times over. Continue in your commitment to guide, mentor, and assist young alumni in your field of endeavor. With gratitude,

Tom Walsh ‘83

A Note from Todd s the new semester begins, Bowdoin Career Planning is coming off one of its most exciting semesters ever and hopes that, with your help, we can continue to offer the finest career guidance available to any liberal arts student in the United States. The involvement of Bowdoin alumni in the Bowdoin Career Advisory Network (BCAN) is an instrumental part of that goal, and we are striving daily to improve Todd Herrmann ’85 the quality and quantity of our net‐ working opportunities. Associate Director of Employer Relations To give you an idea of the type of impact BCAN can have, consider the recruiting that occurred during the fall semester. Within this group are positions that held on‐campus interviews, positions that interviewed at our New York and Boston interview days, and resume referrals posted by Bowdoin alumni or recruiters interested in attracting Bowdoin candidates.  Within the 84 events held on‐campus, 50 distinct employ‐ ers were represented (up from 39 last year).  During the Fall 2010 there were 871 jobs and internships posted on eBear (up from 481 last year).  We encourage applicants to make at least three networking attempts for each application.  This would result in thousands of networking calls each semester.

When we go on to consider that there have been over 500 jobs and internships posted on eBear already this semester, for which we will likely have 2000+ applications, you can see how important the BCAN network is as a resource. Today BCAN exists through two platforms: PolarNet and LinkedIn. Our LinkedIn group has grown rapidly to over 1850 members and has been well‐received by the students. If you have not joined already, please consider doing so by clicking the link below and requesting to join. While you are joining the BCAN LinkedIn® Group, please also join the Bowdoin Alumni Group. It’s also important that you take the time to update your profile in Bowdoin’s PolarNet alumni database by clicking on the link below. The alumni database currently holds over 2000 BCAN members accessible through the BCAN/Careers page on Polar‐ Net. On your profile, please choose to join BCAN on the first line. Seniors have now been given access to the entire Bowdoin Alumni database, giving them more reach to find individuals in the position to inform their decisions going forward. A special “THANKS” to all the Bowdoin alumni who have visited campus so far this year. You are the lifeblood of all our recruiting efforts and make a difference in the future of The College every day. If you would like to visit campus and re‐ cruit Bowdoin students for jobs and internships with your firms, we welcome your inquiry. I can be reached at 207‐725‐ 3717 or herrmann@bowdoin.edu via email.
