Community Advisory Board Meeting June 07, 2012 BSPR Broadcast Center Ron and Linda Yanke Research Park 220 Park Center, Blvd.

6:00 p.m.-7:30 pm AGENDA I. Welcome & Introductions – Susan Giannettino • At 6:05 pm with Micah Austin on conference call II. Approval of minutes from April 05, 2012 meeting • Approved and seconded III. Presentation given on Legacy Giving with discussion - Don Reiman • Introduced, as well as invited by, Kelly Palmer • Difference in Legacy Giving and current giving o Legacy Giving doesn’t always take away from the current giving, a miss conception o Legacy Giving has long term effects for generations • Common Question in Reference to funding: How can they use tax payer dollars to fund public radio?

• Public radio educates and creates legacy.

• As a board it is important to understand the vision of beyond today – raising funds and “the build” will be there 20 years from now.

• Advised that CAB member’s review the brochure o If you can think of anyone that fits as a potential donor, go to those with the knowledge of how to approach. o They are happy to sit down with you concerning those that fit and how to best approach these individuals.

• Goal is a planned giving gift (small or large) o The Challenge: boards who are asking station members to do something they themselves are not doing. o It will effect generations to come • Please call Kelly Palmer with any questions you may have.

**A Presentation was offered in honor of Janice Fulkerson. Janice has completed 6 years of service as a CAB board member and the board wanted to do something special in recognition of her service through the years.

Station Report-Hess A. Personnel – John Hess announced • Betsy Beard is unable to return from her extended medical leave • We welcome Krista Doble to our team in the Business Office B. Overview of FY 13 budget • 63% Membership, 22% Underwriting, 12% Capital Campaign • 4% Misc.

• FY comparison - FY11 our largest • FY12 revenue should come in at $1,800,000 • Close to 10,000 members, annual giving is deepening • FY12 expenses a little under $3,000,000 was the projection – actual under $2,500,000 • Looks as though we will have some remaining funds that can be put back into our reserves that had been previously depleted • FY13 – Appropriated $530,154, Work Study $30,600 Grants $443,756 Local $2,106,559 • These are projected dollars based on budget submitted • FY13 Allocation – largest is salaries and benefits • To make everyone aware – we are 2 years forward funded by federal monies • Please see attachment: ‘Budget PPT’ for more details C. Update on the Stations proposed programming changes • Effective July 2nd, 2012 • Facts sheets distributed to all members and will be distributed with the minutes • Goal is to reach more audience • Dede Ryan – expressed concern about the choice of Diane Rehm • Pat Johnson – expressed what a good, strong show it is • John Hess stated her ratings are huge and content is rich, bringing news and information of Washington to Idaho • Pat Johnson inquired about dollars spent • Paul Stribling – stating more bang for our buck – not spending new money – should save money in the long term • Mary Reiman – inquired how often do we review programs or switching things around

Paul Stribling – stated he is a little slower to change things would rather build relationships and give the programs time to see what they will be able to do Susan Gianettino – wants to make sure everyone understands the changes and we stay on the time schedule Please see attachments: ‘New Program Schedule (7.2.12)’ for the new line up in detail Please see attachments: ‘FAQ’s for KBSU Changes’ as well as ‘FAQ’s for KBSX Changes’ o These items will show displacements & adjustments with the new programming lineup as well as provide talking points for inquiries from listeners

CAB Task Force Reports A. Marketing Ad Hoc Committee • Committee talked about advocacy while meeting • Committee talk about the Capital Campaign while meeting • Committee members met 3 separate times, presenting findings to John at the end of May • Provided a framework to the staff to choose where they wanted and where able to go within the suggestions • **Please see attachment: ‘BSPR Marketing Plan’ 1. Follow up report from the radio staff • Did an analyzes as to what could be done financially and within the staff limitations that we have • Committee will be meeting again soon • Looking to hire a coordinator to assist with implementation • Format provided was useable, making it easy to identify what the station could grab onto as task and goals • Requested that the committee stay together for future marketing endeavors B. Advocacy Report • Identify where opportunities lie that the CAB can have an impact • Individual as well as group impact • Michael Zuzel – mentioned the Weekly Update as a good place to refer if looking for events that the CAB can have a presence. Or even perhaps where you already had plans on attending and are now aware that BSPR will be in attendance as well • **Please see attachment: ‘Advocacy Report’ for the full overview of the committee’s findings

C. Programming • Committee completed a summary to be distributed with the minutes • Meeting with the rest of the programming staff through the summer • Goal is to build a database outside the normal group of “expertise” • **Please see attachment: ‘CAB Program Committee’ for the full overview of the committee’s findings D. Sustainability • Met with the Rotary Group in Jerome as well as the Rotary Group in McCall • Wanting to be more visual with our mission, vision, and goals • Did a “first pass” screening on the listing of names provided by the CAB o Will contact everyone before contact to identify best way/contact method suggestions • Tours – working on the logistics as well as a poster board for some visuals as some may tour one, other, or both locations VI. . Other Business • It was announced that a CAB founding member passed away.
