Call to Order: Dennis called the meeting to order at 12:00 pm. He presented the minutes of the May 10, 2022, meeting. Unknown made motion to approve as written, with a second by unknown. All voted in favor of approving the minutes.

Governance Committee: Presentation of a By Laws change allowing for one additional (third) term of 3 years following a one-year break after the second term. Per Julie, but they will also need to clarify the part about Boise State University representation, which is now Mark Wheeler. The proposed change will be voted on in November.

Fundraising Committee: Committee read a book over the summer on decolonizing wealth.

Kristin said a few words about on-air fundraising occurring this week.

Advocacy Committee: Susan spoke about the experience of the Soul Food Festival and Art in the Park. Julie said Autumn was great at bringing people in and Bill spoke about how great it was to have the station represented. The development plan includes reaching out more for students. Bethany thanked everyone for their participation in both Soul Food and Art in the Park.

Programming Committee change: We have been speaking about revising the programming committee. Dennis and Andy discussed it and asked Autumn to assist with a renewed expansion to include digital. She put together a proposal for the programming team and would like to loop in development team. The professionals from the station need help gauging needs of members and this committee was created to give them feedback. It will be renamed the Audience Experience and Impact committee, adding that it’s the feedback committee. There will be focus group research when asked and the ability to do research and give them feedback on station needs.

Nominating Committee: Two nominees have been selected so far and we are working on Valley County and perhaps Tribal members from McCall that Susan brought up.

November will be when the nominees will be voted on; they would start in January.

Chris Bragg brought up challenges for CSI students since they are only there for 2 years and it is hard to see if they would be a good fit until possibly until the second year, or final year. There are some clubs there. There was interest in getting new representation from Blaine County and surveying our major donors there.

Community Comment: The range of comments included, using the music station to babysit dogs or as a safety measure when the house is empty. Erik spoke to new show that started last year, Performance Today, which has added more variety and may reach new audiences.

Programming Report: Erik presented a report on broadcast ratings. He has spoken to the BSU music department about the potential of local programming. Sunday Baroque helped to add differentiated programming. World Cafe seems a bit more like pop radio and is positioned to bring in a younger audience. Erik said the average age among BSPR Music music listeners is going down slightly. We also share a lot of audience with KBOI, he says, so we are advertising more News on BSPR Music.

Station Report: Tom listed the personnel changes among the interns, Mountain West News Bureau reporters, and station staff. He noted the Broadcast Society event in June, and the attendance of staff at PMJA and PMDMC conferences. The Dobbs decision led to an expansion of abortion coverage, including interstate collaborations. Expressive Idaho completed another season, with financial supported from Andy Huang and Jennifer Dickey. He shared a video that Amy, a summer intern, created as an animator.

He also highlighted Jack Bevan as summer intern from a workforce program for the visually impaired.

Story Corps, which we hosted for a month, had a great presence. He talked about the occasional issues related to air conditioning and the printers that affect any office. He described the National Murrow Award to be received by Rachel Cohen and his support for both Rachel and news director Sáša Woodruff to attend the ceremony in New Your City. He recapped Another Round in Twin Falls and the news series on the 50th anniversary of Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

He described the importance of the team’s work on digital over the past few years and announced the brand awareness campaign for social media. He previewed upcoming events Another Round for the Madelyn at the Mountain West News Bureau and a Night At The Movies hosted by George Prentice. He is sending Katie Kloppenberg and Sáša Woodrfuff to ONA, a digital conference in Los Angeles.

He updated the board on the process of acquiring KLCX in Lewiston from Lewis Clark State College and the translator near Pocatello from KUER Utah. He emphasized the importance of election coverage and the funds earmarked to promote it this year, via America Amplified. There will be a station Open House on November 12.

Other Business: Today is the last day in attendance for Laurie Ahern and we thanked her and spoke about her involvement not only with BSPR but with public media in general over the past 25 years. She and her husband Paul have done a lot for the station over the years. She is excited for our future and she believed it was the right time to leave with the board so well-positioned for the years ahead.
