Community Advisory Board Meeting June 8, 2010 Simplot/Micron Building-RM 210 Boise State University Campus 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m*

I.

Welcome Meeting was called to order at 6:04pm. Pat welcomed everyone to the meeting and asked all in attendance for introductions and welcomed new member Susan Giannettino.

Approval of minutes from April Motion to approve minutes was made and seconded.

III.

CABNominations Motion to approve new member David Hale was made by Marshall and seconded by Dave.

IV.

Station Updates a. John opened the meeting to questions regarding the departmental updates that had been sent out to the CAB.Elva asked for an update regarding the AM stations. John explained the sales processand also made the CABaware that as of July 1st we will no longer air University Pulse. Elva asked if the idea of Spanish programming airing on FM had been considered as an option. John explained that at the moment we do not have room on the schedule for it but HD might be an alternative. Bob asked what the next steps would be if we could not sell the station. John explained that we could sublease,sell finance or let the station go dark and return the license to the FCC.We are hoping to make the purchase of the station as easy as possible for a potential buyer and that we’re not interested in selling to a competitor. Erik mentioned that he is in the processof contacting program providers to look for alternative programming on the AM to help reduce some of our cost on it. Paul asked about the addition of the second hour of Bob Edwards Weekend and wanted to know if there would be any new magazines aired on Sat. Erik and John explained that there will be no news on Sat. We’re going to try something new and see how the listeners respond as

this is a low listener hour. Paul had concerns with us removing a weekend news magazine.

John explained that another program that we’re concerned with listenership is What Do You Know. We’re thinking of possibly running only the first hour as listenership tends to drop off the second hour.

Michelle Hicks asked for an update on Donahoe Paceselection and what the major components of their work with us will be. Vida said that some of the projects they will be helping us with are Branding (BSPR/stations), market research and focus groups. John added that Local News will also be something that they will help us focus on. Marshall asked about specifics in the survey and about incorporating capital campaign questions and Vida said that we have not had any further discussions with Donahoe Pacesince the meetings to make selection. Purchasing should have award finalized by the end of this week. Michelle said she was excited about the news magazine. John said Elizabeth will be talking about that in more detail at the next meeting. Marshall expressed a concern with us not having anything that covered technology in our area and Paul expressed that he also felt that …Elizabeth explained that the news magazine content has already been selected and it has segments in it that include medical and technology. Susan expressed that the survey the station does should also encompassnon listeners so we know if this is something that would get them to listen. Marshall mentioned Kickstand as a possible underwriter/partner. Dave mentioned the lack of having other departments being included as part of our local news such as Stardate or IBM. He said it would be nice to have something that can be aired by other stations nationwide and that it would be nice for us to produce. Erik talked about Story Story night and explained that it is similar to the Moth radio program and we are hoping to make that available soon plus it links us to local community groups. Erik mentioned that we’d probably need someone to intro the stories and/or the program. Paul asked if we are going to continue to air Music from Stanley. John said yes and Paul suggested that Ryan might want to expand the program to incorporate other locations. John said the other program we are looking to start up again is The Green Room. Susan asked for event survey results. Vida explained that we don’t have too many surveys yet but we’re hoping to get more this summer. John asked the CABhow they felt about us doing one big event rather than small events. Marshall said that if we were going to do it we would want it to be done around the capital campaign and tie it in with people being part of the experience and participating. Marshall mentioned that promotion and marketing of the upcoming events needs to be done very well to help increase attendance.

Paul suggested maybe partnering with someone like the Botanical Garden and doing something like From the Top or Mountain Stage. Camille said what she liked about Paul’s ideas is that they reach a younger and more diverse audience. Vida mentioned the concern is the large dollar commitment associated with the larger names and shows. One of the things that helped with What Do You Know is that the Morrison Center covered cost and we were media sponsors. Bob suggested doing Carnegie Kids or something similar that would also be a news story. b. Casestatement is almost finalized

c. Update for new building was given the construction has been put off for another couple of months. State has sent out contracts. d. Department searches: News general assignment Reporter - We had 54 applicants and two finalists. One of our finalists has done work for Morning Edition, All Things Considered and he speaks multiple languagesand has a master’s degree from Berkley. The other candidate has a degree from Brown made a career change and used to work for US Intl. Trade Commissions. We have two great candidates; they will come in for interviews within the next two weeks and that we should have a decision made and someone hired by July 1st. Hy said they had started phone interviews for UW sales and that they are hopeful to have the sales position filled by this month. They have three candidates that currently do sales for local TV stations. John gave an update on the Development Director search. The search has been extended due to not having quality candidates and having Bob Stein assisting in the search. We have since received some very well qualified candidates and are hoping to have someone on board soon.
