Community Advisory Board Meeting December 14, 2010 SMITC 210 6:00-7:30 pm Minutes

II. Approval of minutes from October, 2010 meeting – Janice a. Pat moved to approve the minutes. Ken moved to second them.

II I. Second review of Community Engagement Calendar – Adrienne/John a.

IV. Update on possible threat if federal funding for Public Broadcasting – John Hess a. CPB Funding and How it Works - $430 million is appropriated by the CPB every year. 21.5 m is given to CPB Operations. System support get 25.8m. Station and Programming Grants $382.7m Of this, Public television gets 287m. Public Radio gets 95.7m This breaks out into Direct grants of 88.9m - of this, BSPR ends up with .43m for FY11 and Program Fund of 6.7m. As federal funding shrinks or goes away, we will see more fund drives and more underwriting messages because we will be more reliant on individual listeners and businesses to provide our funding. In 2010, Americans rated public broadcasting as an “excellent” use of taxpayer dollars, second only to defense. BSPR has joined “170 Million Americans” – a movement to support public broadcasting. John asked the CAB to write to people they know that have a say in the outcome of the vote in January. He will provide talking points for everyone. V. Board Retreat Overview – Retreat Planning committee a. Committee met in November to discuss topics of conversation for the meeting as well as format for the retreat. b. Retreat will be held on Friday, January 21 st at 5:00 PM in the new facility and will include dinner at a local restaurant. It will be facilitated by external facilitator David Spann. It will reconvene on Saturday morning, January 22 nd at 8:30 AM. Things to be covered are: Establish baseline and common ground -History of the Station(s), History of the CAB, Strategic Plan for BSPR, Funding sources, Code of Ethics, Web Metrics, Bio’s and photos of station staff and CAB members; Local news and programming – NPR Parameters, BSPR Statistics regarding local news and local programming over time, Define trade- offs, Define working assumptions Is there anything that others in the CAB feel should be included in discussion at the retreat? Michelle stated that she was a little confused as to why we have had 3 director level people leave within in the last year and would like to know more about how we can hire (salary, expectations, etc.) Pat asked for more definition on what “Local News” is so that going into the retreat, everyone has an understanding of what they are looking at. Mark asked for an advance list of top-line information and numbers so that CAB members can see how many resources we have at our disposal right now. Susan thinks that a facilitator will be crucial to getting group though all of the discussion. Paula would like to hear more about the outlying areas (Twin Falls, McCall, Sun Valley, etc) and how they fit into news and programming.

VI. Top-line #’s for December one –day fund drive – John Hess a. On air we raised over $93,000. Our goal was $80,000We had almost 1,000 members pledge. Our goal was 750.One of the biggest successes of the drive is that we got 350 new members. Very successful drive!

Especially since we were 5 weeks on the heels of the October drive.

Janice asked how many CAB members either helped pitch or answered phones. Susan helped on phones and Frank and Janice helped pitch. Janice then asked the CAB members if they had the

time, would they like to help on phones. Pat stated that she would if she has time. Janice also asked people to let her know if they would be interested in doing a CAB challenge for the spring drive.

Other Business a. Paula asked if the meetings will continue on Tuesday evenings.

These are hard for her as she has symphony rehearsal. She stated that if the meetings continue on Tuesday evenings she requests a telephone connection and one of better quality than last time.
