Welcome to Winter

Welcome, to the warm embrace of our winter edition! As another three months have passed since our last Community Chatter, we at The Shoreline continue to thrive as a community. We’ve welcomed new residents, nurtured beautiful friendships, engaged in exciting activities and events and cherished the wonderful experiences we’ve shared so far.

This season, more than any other, invites us to gather close and savour the joys that each day brings.

The past three months has again seen many activities. We have had St.Patrick’s Day celebrations, Easter, the commemoration of Anzac Day, World’s Biggest Morning Tea, Healthy Ageing Strategy Launch and Building Digital Skills to name a few.

We hope you enjoy the pictures and stories shared in this newsletter as much as we have enjoyed creating these memorable events and connections throughout our beautiful community.

CARING to all of her residents and families.

She shows kindness and genuine interest in each and every resident.

EXCELLENCE Holly displays excellence in her coffee making approach and knowledge. Holly’s coffee is undisputedly one of the best in Coffs!

just serve the menu items, she engages with each resident in the same way as our care staff. She knows their stories and takes a genuine interest.

DIGNITY Holly is aware of other’s emotions, and is always sensitive to other people’s feelings. Holly is a sounding board for both residents and staff.

Congratulations to Holly, a well-deserved and highly valued member of The Shoreline team.

THE SHORELINE APP

Don’t forget we have our Shoreline App available to all of our residents, which is provided for us to post photos and messages to your family and friends.

If you would like assistance with how to use the App, please ask Concierge and they will direct you to the right person.

The Shoreline team members can also post ‘happy snaps’ on your behalf as well so the wider community at The Shoreline can see them if you choose.

Leisure and Lifestyle UPDATE

My how the year is flying! We are at the end of June and winter has hit us cold already. It may be cooler outside, however, inside it’s warm and toasty and our residents continue to be kept busy with a host of activities. Our lovely residents commemorated Anzac Day with a beautiful service in the Pavilion that saw quite a few residents from both the Shoreline Retirement Village and Aged Care participating.

Every Monday morning our residents can generally be found in the cinema watching a movie, with some recents including MammaMia, Mona Lisa Smile, or the more heartfelt A Dog’s Journey. Exercise is always high on our list of activities with Havin’ a Ball, Zumba, Forever Fit and our Meditation and

Exercise class with Kim. We cover all aspects of exercise and make sure there is a style to suit all tastes. Drumming is a new activity we are enjoying growing into. Drumming is a physical sensory experience, that boosts the immune system and has proven to have a positive effect on a host of issues including anxiety, fatigue and behavioural issues. Our residents are enjoying it, and the fun it brings to their mornings. Easter, Mother’s Day and Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea created the opportunity for our residents to come together and share special moments celebrating and recognising significant dates on our calendar.

I can’t believe we are reaching the middle of the year and heading towards Christmas once again!

Community Care Update

Thank you to all who came along and supported The Community Care office Grand Opening on the 29th of April. It proved to be a great success for sharing information on our services available.

We also had brilliant success with the Introduction of Community Care at Happy Hour on 3rd of May where residents were able to meet some of the Community Care team. As we head into the cooler months; it is important to keep ourselves well from those nasty colds and flus that make their way

around. Your number one defence for avoiding the bugs is by washing your hands. It really does make a difference. At the very least we should wash our hands after toileting, before eating or preparing food and after returning home from outings. Remember, hand sanitizers can be a convenient option in a pinch, but visibly dirty hands always need soap and running water to get clean. Of course, we should also avoid socialising when we are infected with a bug to prevent the spread. Good news moving forward for residents who

have approval codes for CHSP Domestic Assistance. We have submitted our application to the Government and hope to hear within the next month if we’ve been successful in obtaining a grant to support our residents with this need. I will keep you all up to date on the outcome on this one!

Remember if you are requiring additional help at home to stay safe and well, you should register with My Aged Care and ask for an assessment.

The contact number for this is: 1800 200 422.

RESIDENT Spotlight

HILARY YOUNG

Hilary was born in Canberra in 1951 to John May who was a Chaplain at The Royal Military College Duntroon in Canberra, and Mary May who was a secondary school teacher who taught English and History. She is the second of four children in her family.

Hilary attended primary school and high school in the Hunter Valley, once completing Year 12 she went back to Canberra and attended the Australian National University where she did a 3-year Arts Degree. Hilary’s parents encouraged her to do further study and with a passion for Nursing, she completed her Nursing Degree which included theory and practice in 1975.

During this time, Hilary got married to David, a horticulturalist. She worked in a doctor’s reception until she had her first child Peter, who was born in 1978. Not

long after this Hilary and her family moved overseas for her husband’s work and Hilary’s second son Andrew was born in 1979 in Kathmandu!

Hilary and her family spent two years in Kathmandu before coming home and adjusting to life back in Australia.

The boys completed their school years in Canberra whilst Hilary completed a Nursing refresher course in 1985. Hilary subsequently worked in the STD Clinic at Canberra Hospital for about a year around the same times that AIDS had become a worldwide health issue. Hilary states that working in this clinic was a real eye opener. After this Hilary moved to the Oncology Unit which was her passion, she then studied in Sydney to get her Oncology Certificate and continue to work in Oncology. Unfortunately during this time Hilary’s relationship with her

husband broke down. It was at work, that a physiotherapist colleague suggested Hilary do stress management fun runs. This started Hilary’s love of running and triathlons.

In the 1990’s Andrew, Hilary’s son completed a scuba diving course and Hilary decided that she would do this as well. She travelled all over Micronesia and various tropical locations to dive and absolutely loved it.

It was whilst diving in Merimbula that she met Mike in 2000 and so began the beautiful relationship that continues to this day.

Hilary and Mike, who was also from Canberra, continued to live and work there. Hilary still working as a Registered Nurse and Mike as a Mechanical

Engineer. They would regularly travel to Scotland (where Mike is from) to visit family. On their return journey they would try and visit a different country, especially a destination where they could scuba dive.

A memorable moment that Hilary recalls around this time was the start of the 2003 Canberra bushfires. Hilary was teaching Mike’s son to drive, they had visited a shopping centre and when they came out the sky was black with thick smoke. They then returned home to fight the fire and save their property!

Hilary continued working in Oncology specialising in Haematology and Stem Cell transplants

and became a very experienced and educated R.N in that field. However the deeply emotional aspect of this role took its toll on Hilary and in her words she “hit a wall”.

Hilary and Mike through their love of diving and water sports decided that Canberra being 2 hours inland, wasn’t the place where they wanted to live. With all their children grown up and independent, they decided to up stakes and move to Coffs Harbour; a town that they had visited previously and enjoyed on several occasions.

Hilary and Mike found a beautiful home at Korora with a big garden which Hilary loved tending to. They remained in their Korora home until January this year, when they moved into The Headland Terraces here at The Shoreline.

Since moving into The Shoreline, both Hilary and Mike have settled in and have enjoyed meeting new people and forming new friendships. Hilary enjoys using the pool, the gym and attending the various activities on offer. She appreciates the low maintenance aspect of being a resident at The Shoreline.

Hilary is the proud grandmother of 4 grandchildren, Peter’s daughter’s Maddy 8 and Poppy, 7 and Andrew’s children, Cooper 4 and Lily,

who has just turned 1 . Hilary also enjoys volunteering at The Coffs Harbour Botanic Gardens. This is her way to maintain her connection with gardening. She loves swimming, she is the President of The Coffs Harbour Masters Swimming Club, enjoys watercolour painting, patchwork and quilting, reading and of course, keeping fit!

Hilary recently took out First Place in the Women’s 70+ Category of the Coffs Harbour Ocean Swim, affectionately known as the Jetty Swim and was presented her award by none other than Olympic Gold Medallist and Australian swimming legend, Brooke Hanson, OAM.

Retirement Village News

As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun and what a fun, three months we have had! It is so wonderful to see us growing as a community, as a family, fostering new connections and friendships, seeing our Weekly Calendar expand and really forging ahead in so many ways.

As we head towards…. dare I say it- Christmas, let us reflect and see what we have been up to…

The last three months has seen the welcoming of new residents, both in Headland Terrace and Saltwater Apartments, the introduction of new games; Mahjong and 500, Killer Darts in the Bombora Bar and several new dance,

exercise and meditation classes run by our lovely resident, Sue W.

We have enjoyed events and activities such as, The Shoreline Travel Club, Building Digital Skills, Fire Education, Barefoot Bowls, Gentlemen’s Lunch, Meet the Community Care Team, The Shoreline Trivia Night, Cabaret & Variety shows, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, exclusive deals for Shoreline residents at 99 on Park Restaurant, Park Beach Bowling Club and The Hoey Moey, weekly Happy Hours, regular Floor get togethers and birthday celebrations to name a few.

Our Resident Meetings have given us the opportunity to engage in honest and open communication and as

always, provide considered feedback. We have seen great improvements thus far; the installation of the lap and digital clocks, beside the Pool and in the gym, and of course the flagpole flying our Australian Flag.

I am sure that as we move forward through 2024, we will remain a busy hive of activity continuing joyous gatherings and conversations. Let us reflect on the wonderful moments we’ve shared together in our beautiful Shoreline community. Each day has been a testament to the vibrant spirit that defines our “family” and as we look ahead, let’s embrace the promise of new adventures and cherished memories yet to be made!

Quality and Education UPDATE

The Shoreline has recently welcomed Brooke Roberts back into a role at the facility – Educator and Quality Coordinator. Brooke will play a pivotal part in ensuring that our efforts towards quality improvement, education and service delivery remain consistent and synchronised. Her expertise will greatly contribute to meeting the expectations outlined by the Commission.

The Aged Care Quality

and Safety Commission is launching new standards to govern our care in July 2024. In preparation for understanding these new standards, information handouts will be distributed weekly for residents and staff alike. The Aged Care Quality Standards are being strengthened as part of the proposed new Aged Care Act and regulatory model.

In 2021, the Royal Commission into Aged

Care Quality and Safety recommended that the Department of Health and Aged Care (the Department) review the Standards.

They recommended that the reviewed Standards include vital areas such as:  food and nutrition

dementia

diversity

governance

clinical care

The first new standard that we will introduce and share information on is Standard 1 – The Person. The Older Person statement for this standard is, I am valued and have choice over the life I lead.

The Standard underpins the way staff should treat older people. It explains how important it is for The Shoreline to understand that each older person is unique and has a different life story.

This means The Shoreline needs to ensure staff understand each person to give the right personcentred care tailored to their individual needs. Keep an eye out for the first factsheet to be distributed within the next week.

RESIDENT Spotlight

NEIL BOWES

LET’S GET TO KNOW NEIL BOWES, ONE OF OUR RESIDENTIAL AGED CARE RESIDENTS.

Neil was born in Newcastle in 1950. Neil spent 4 years travelling around Australia as a young man developing a love for nature, food, cities and many countries of the world.

Neil was born with a love for reading which is evident now in his love and care for our library here on the ground floor of The Shoreline.

Neil’s love for reading saw him working for local newspapers proofing, and then becoming a journalist. A trip to New Zealand and a report on a chess tournament peaked the local tv station’s ears and soon after saw him working for TV 1 in New Zealand.

Neil’s career saw him travel far and wide

covering stories big and little, meeting exciting people and attending many special events, including the Olympic Games events.

Neil retired after the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and has since continued to enjoy life here in Coffs Harbour.

Moving into The Shoreline has a been a wonderful experience for Neil. The staff, the surroundings, the care and the accommodation are just extra special and he can’t speak highly enough of all the support and options that are on offer here.

Although a mostly private man, you will often find Neil in the library tending to the books. Tidying, straightening and sorting. He is doing a brilliant job and does it with such passion and love!

Say Hi to Neil next time you see him wandering around.

Physiotherapy Update

The Shoreline continues its strong affiliation with the University of Newcastle and its Physiotherapy Program facilitated by our Clinical Educator and Senior Physiotherapist Henry Elvy.

Special thanks to our Physio students, Kaitlin and Oliver, for their outstanding presentations on Parkinson’s and Chronic Pain. The educational session was insightful and greatly appreciated by all residents and staff.
