As we approach the halfway mark of 2025, it’s a good time to pause and reflect. They say, “Time and tide wait for no man,” and it certainly feels that way! The months have flown by and it’s incredible to look back on what’s been capturing our attention and filling our days here at The Shoreline. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the activities, the friendships, and the wonderful moments we’ve shared over the past few months. We’re excited for what’s ahead as we continue to enjoy the seasons, stay connected, and make the most of every day.
As the long summer days fade and we welcome the cooler winter air, it’s the perfect time to settle in with a warm drink and a cosy blanket. While the colder months can sometimes bring the winter blues, here at The Shoreline, we have so much to keep us connected and engaged.
Whether you love the idea of hibernating indoors with a good book, cooking up comforting meals, or perhaps enjoying a stroll along the beach in your warmest jacket, there’s something for everyone. For those who prefer a little social time, the Café is always ready for coffee and cake with friends, or maybe you’d like to relax by the fire in our library with a good story to keep you company.
As we reflect on the past few months, we can also look forward to the activities, friendships, and moments of joy that lie ahead. Winter may be here, but the warmth of our community continues to shine brightly at The Shoreline.
Welcome to Winter Welcome GENERAL MANAGER UPDATE
Winter at The Shoreline: A Season of Warmth and New Horizons
As the crisp winter air settles in and we cosy up with hot cups of tea, we’re reminded that change, much like the seasons, is a natural and welcome part of life. Here at The Shoreline, we’re embracing this time of year not only with warm meals, extra blankets, and flashy winter outfits, but with a renewed sense of excitement as we prepare for something just as important: Australia’s New Aged Care Act (and Strengthened Quality Standards), set to come into effect on the 1st of July 2025.
Understanding the Changes: What You Need to Know
The upcoming changes to aged care legislation are focused on one central theme: putting you, our residents, at the heart of everything we do. The new Aged Care Act is being designed around key principles like dignity, respect, choice, and person-centred care. These values have always been embedded in our approach at The Shoreline, and now they’ll be strengthened and supported by national standards. It will impact not just our residential aged care home, but also those in our broader ILU space receiving Home Care Services.
Here are a few key themes you may hear more about:
A Stronger Focus on Rights: The new Act introduces a comprehensive Statement of Rights, ensuring that all older Australians receive care that is safe, respectful, and tailored to their needs and preferences.
Better Quality and Safety: There will be clearer expectations and tighter oversight of care providers, aimed at raising the bar across the entire sector—and we’re proud to already be ahead of many of these reforms.
Genuine Choice and Control: The reforms highlight the importance of giving older people more control over their daily lives and care decisions. Our teams are already working closely with residents to ensure their voices are heard, and their choices respected.
A New Regulatory Framework: A single, modern system will replace the patchwork of existing rules, making it easier for providers like us to focus on what truly matters—delivering exceptional care and experiences.
Financial Sustainability Across the Sector: New opportunities will become available to ensure ongoing sustainability for all care providers. Many of these changes under the Act are either for new residents coming in after the date of the 1st of July 2025, or in some areas grandfathering of existing services will occur while the Government finalises the rules around this area. For our ILU Community Care clients, new funding methods are about to be introduced at the same time.
What This Means for You
While the changes may sound big— and they are!—rest assured that for residents and families at The Shoreline, the transition will be smooth and wellsupported. We’ve been actively preparing for these reforms, investing in training, systems, and technology that help us stay ahead of the curve. In fact, many of the changes coming reflect practices we’ve already put in place. This is a time of great opportunity to build an even better aged
care system, and we’re excited to be part of the journey.
We will be releasing more information about particular areas of change that directly impact you in the coming weeks, or months, dependant on the finalisation of the rules that are attached to the legislation.
A Winter Full of Connection
While winter brings its own beauty— misty mornings, hearty meals, and cosy evenings—it can also be a time when we need to be extra mindful of our health and wellbeing. The shorter days and cooler weather can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation or low mood, and certain health conditions like arthritis, respiratory issues, and of course the other acute respiratory diseases (e.g. COVID-19, Influenza, etc.) can become more noticeable.
That’s why staying socially connected during the winter months is more important than ever. It is easy to slip into bad habits during this time and withdraw unnecessarily.
At The Shoreline, we’re placing extra emphasis this season on fostering meaningful connections, encouraging movement, and keeping spirits high. Whether it’s a warm conversation over a cup of tea or coffee at the Cafe, group activities in the Hub, or gentle indoor exercise classes run by our talented team, we’re creating plenty of opportunities to come together and lift each other’s spirits. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your GP during this time, if you haven’t already, to ensure you are ready for winter.
As always, thank you for being part of our incredible community. If you have questions about the new Aged Care Act or want to learn more about how we’re preparing, feel free to chat with our leadership team. We’re here for you every step of the way.
Kind regards,
Owen Lednor

PAM ORR
Pam is a much loved resident here at The Shoreline.
Born and raised in Casino, Pam has been a proud local of this region all her life. During her high school years her family moved to Lismore, but she later returned to Casino to complete her schooling. At the young age of 15, Pam began working at Rockman’s clothing store. Her talent and eye for fashion led the company to send her to Brisbane to study window dressing. She loved every moment of her job.
At 18, Pam married her sweetheart Kenny. The couple moved to Sydney while Kenny trained to join the police force. Afterward, they returned to Lismore, bought a home and settled into community life. Eventually, their
Spotlight
journey took them to Coffs Harbour where they shifted careers and began managing the Coramba Pub—an exciting and very social chapter that lasted about ten years.
Sport played a big role in Pam and Kenny’s life and it was through sport— particularly rugby league—that their bond grew stronger. Weekends were often spent on the sidelines or at sporting events, cherishing the vibrant sporting community they were a part of.
After Kenny sadly passed away at a young age, Pam returned to retail and also worked in aged care as a carer, gaining firsthand insight and appreciation for the dedication it takes to care for others.
Pam is a proud mother to three daughters, grandmother to eight, and now a great-grandmother many times over—so many, in fact, she’s lost count!
When a good friend suggested The Shoreline, Pam was hesitant at first. But after giving it a look, she made the move—and as Pam says, “Best decision I ever made!” She loves the variety of activities, the friendships she’s formed and of course, the delicious food. Pam is a familiar and cheerful face at bingo, exercise classes, movies and happy hour—she truly embraces everything on offer.
Pam hopes that lamb’s fry makes its way onto the menu one day.
Pam never misses a chance to share her love for The Shoreline. Her energy, warmth, and zest for life make her a wonderful ambassador for aged care living.

Hi everyone,
Wow! Can you believe it’s already June?
The past few months have flown by in a whirlwind of activity and I think I speak for all of us when I say it’s been an incredibly fun and eventful time! So many of you have contributed to making these moments happen and I want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank you for your involvement.
A special shout-out goes to our wonderful volunteers who dedicate their time to run activities and bring fresh ideas to life. Whether it’s organising exercise sessions, dart games, card games, board games, movie and opera viewings in the cinema, dance classes, or bowling instruction— your efforts truly make a difference.
Some of you may be volunteering behind the scenes, while others extend your kindness to the wider community, but no matter where or how you serve, you are a blessing. You are valued deeply by your fellow residents and staff alike.
I once read a quote that says, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room
here on earth.” Volunteering is truly the heart of community spirit and we certainly feel that here at The Shoreline. I’m so proud to walk alongside all of you, supporting your ideas, suggestions and creative energy as we bring them to life.
If you ever have an idea or want to brainstorm, I’m always here for a chat— come and share your thoughts with me anytime.

MEET OUR NEWEST RESIDENTS: BRUCE AND SUE!
We’re delighted to welcome Bruce and Sue Gray to The Shoreline community!
Bruce and Sue bring with them a lifetime of incredible stories, professional achievements and a shared zest for life. Their journey together began over 40 years ago when they met through mutual colleagues at Masterfoods. A shared love for water skiing sparked a connection and ten years later, Bruce popped the question. Since then, they’ve been inseparable exploring the world and embracing life’s adventures together.
Sue is a trailblazer. Originally set on becoming a pharmacist, she pivoted to chemistry and built a remarkable career in quality control, ensuring high standards were met in food and pharmaceutical production. She worked for notable companies including within the Dairy Industry, Masterfoods, McDonald’s, Bonlac, Glaxo, BOM, Sigma, Aspro and Mars.
Sue holds the proud title of Australia’s first female production manager and has the unique distinction of making the first Mars Bar in the country. In a male-dominated industry and at a time when women were often financially dependent on their husbands, Sue carved her own path—securing a home loan on her own and achieving great professional success.
Bruce is a food technologist who specialised in developing shelf-stable food products. His expertise also took him to Masterfoods, where fate introduced him to Sue.
Bruce and Sue have travelled extensively visiting and admiring the ancient wonders of Egypt, the culture of Japan and the natural beauty of Australia’s Kimberley region. Later this year they plan to explore Australia’s coastline by car and boat before jetting off to Singapore, a favourite destination where they’ll celebrate a special birthday in a beloved heritage hotel overlooking Marina Bay.
If you ever want to chat about travel, Bruce and Sue are the people to see!
About ten years ago after a spontaneous weekend visit to Coffs Harbour, Bruce and Sue made the bold move from Melbourne. Drawn by the warmer weather and coastal charm, they quickly fell in love with a home in Sapphire Beach. Retirement living in an apartment wasn’t originally on Bruce’s radar, but one visit to The Shoreline changed his mind!
Now, they’re happily settled and active members of our community—daily swimmers, gym users and quickly becoming exercise class enthusiasts. Bruce and Sue frequently say: “Are we really doing this? ….. What’s not to love about The Shoreline?”
We’re thrilled to have Bruce and Sue as part of our community and look forward to the many stories, smiles, and adventures they’ll share with us all.

In March, the Marian Grove Ukulele Group visited, sparking memories through music. Our beloved therapy dog Ellie, turned one! Residents enjoyed celebrating her birthday, especially during a joyful visit with local preschoolers.
Our Harmony Day Morning Tea was a beautiful tribute to cultural inclusion and the power of shared stories. Meanwhile, Des Handsaker, one of our talented RAC residents, treated us to a special musical session celebrating the iconic Slim Dusty.
April brought more musical joy with a sing-along concert by Heather Rose. The Easter Parade was a colourful celebration, with staff and residents dressing up, sharing laughs and singing together in a festive atmosphere.
ANZAC Day was solemnly observed as we paid tribute to those who served and sacrificed. It was a time of reflection, remembrance and gratitude.
Mother’s Day was marked with a special morning tea and tribute concert, honouring mothers and influential women for their enduring impact on our lives and the world.
Our residents have been embracing wellness with Tai Chi and relaxation classes with Renee. Other favourites continue to shine, including:

Our dedicated volunteers play an essential role in enriching the lives of our residents. We thank them deeply for their time, care and companionship. Exciting events are on the horizon!
In June, residents will enjoy a picnic at the Jetty and Armchair Travel will take us on a scenic journey to New Zealand.
And don’t miss our International Pie Day celebration during Happy Hour—because who doesn’t love a hot pie and some great tunes?
Stay tuned… even bigger things are coming soon.

Sharon Monkton
Hi my name is Sharon Monkton; Registered Nurse, Wife and Mum to 3 now adult children, 3 dogs, 2 goats and 1 cat.
I grew up in the beautiful Blue Mountains. At 4 years of age, I announced to my parents that I was going to be a nurse when I grew up. I was obsessed with all things medical related. My favourite book was “How your body works” and was referred to as “Doctor” by my 5th grade teacher.
Whilst at Uni studying Nursing, I worked as an AIN in a Nursing home. I became a Registered Nurse in 1994, starting my career at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, remaining there for 7 years.
Over the years I worked in Acute Geriatrics, Infectious Diseases and then specialised in Cardiac nursing, eventually achieving Clinical Nurse Specialist.
In 2004 our young family moved back to my husband’s hometown Woolgoolga, and I commenced working at Coffs Harbour Base Hospital. Over the next 18 years I worked in the Acute Medical, High Dependency and Rehabilitation Unit. The last 10 years in management positions.
During this time, we supported and cared for my Mother-in-law through her Alzheimer’s journey and Father-in-law following a devastating stroke.
Post COVID epidemic and feeling disillusioned with the hospital system, I was needing a change. Having previously obtained a postgraduate certificate in Gerontological nursing, and having special interest in dementia and palliative care, I decided to come
full circle and return to Aged Care.
I chose The Shoreline because I wanted to work in an organisation that aligned with my practice standards and was committed to evidenced based exceptional care.
Over the last 3 months, I have been working with our residents and staff in the memory support unit leading the “Dunes Project”. We have had exciting success in improving the environment and quality of life for our Dunes residents with engagement through daily resident centred dementia specific programs.
I am so grateful for the support and opportunity to make such a meaningful difference and look forward to implementing further programs.
