Welcome to Spring

The year is moving very quickly and our community is continuing to grow.

It’s such a joy to watch new residents arrive, new friendships blossom and new activities connect us.

The past three months have seen several activities entertain us all. We celebrated King Charles Birthday, Christmas in July, special performances, a few birthdays and many special family celebrations, just to name a few!

Our energetic residents, diverse activity calendars and ever social communal meeting spaces mean you can always find something to do or someone to talk to at any time of the day.

Let’s dive in and take a look at some of the special events and ever friendly staff and residents that we have here at The Shoreline.

HOUSEKEEPING TEAM

Let me introduce one of our housekeeping team members, Luke.

Luke moved to Coffs Harbour from Brisbane when he was 14 years old with his parents and his sister.

Luke enjoyed working at his parents commercial cleaning business for many years till they sold that business. Upon leaving the family business Luke found a job here at The Shoreline where he has loved working since.

Luke has enjoyed many part time paid/ volunteering jobs alongside his full time job over the years. Some of those include giving time to Sportz Central in Bray St helping in the canteen,

children’s holiday programs and setting up equipment and also serving ice cream down at Cold Rock.

Luke loves a wide variety of hobbies and enjoys spending his weekends ice skating at the Big Banana, mountain bike riding along Coffs creek, putting his creativity into Lego, or just walking the beach.

Luke’s favourite food is creamy chicken and pasta. His favourite dessert is the good old Pavlova.

According to Luke he loves to make people smile and share a bit of his quirkiness around to everyone.

Say hi to Luke next time you see him!

Independent LivingUPDATE

Well, another season down, and it’s safe to say that our independent living residents have spent the last three months as busy and engaged as always. Whether it be planned Shoreline events, family and friend stay overs, café catch ups or Bombora Bar get togethers, the Shoreline family is certainly a busy one!

Christmas in July certainly did not disappoint. As usual, the troops rallied under Cheryl’s ever so organised eye and produced one of the best events to date. We had David’s maple crusted ham, Marie’s delicious plum puddings and many more of Santa’s helpers to make the evening a truly enjoyable event.

Some other popular activities enjoyed recently have included The Gentlemen’s Lunch, Mahjong in the Café, 500 in the Café and Bombora Bar and of course The Shoreline’s very own tribute to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games -“Olympic Killer Darts” - the bullseye’s just keep on coming!!

It was also great to see Crazy Hair Day embraced by a very lovely resident - our very own “Marilyn (Alison) Monroe hehehe…

Another successful event was the Fireside Soiree which brought both current, new and prospective residents together beside our library fireplace and in the Café. Julie went above and beyond to ensure everyone who attended had a lovely afternoon. This event was also a chance to farewell Community Facilitator Meagan and welcome to the role the lovely Birg, who is settling in beautifully!

As we wrap up, there are some exciting activities/events coming to The Shoreline soon. Aquaerobics with Libby will be starting up again the first Tuesday in September and we are looking forward to Indoor Bowls in the Pavilion which will bring an opportunity for our bowling enthusiasts to get together and have some fun!!

Enjoy everyone!!

Community Care Update

Hello to everyone.

I’m thrilled to be a part of The Shoreline community. For those residents I have not had the pleasure of personally meeting yet, my name is Helen Funnell and I have taken on the role of Community Care Manager. I will be here two days a week and look forward to growing the Community Care Program over time.

The Home Care Package Program aims to address the diverse needs of our residents through a range of services and activities. Whether you’re seeking assistance, looking to connect with others, or simply want to enhance your quality of life, this program is here to support you.

There is good news regarding the application for Government funding under the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) - Domestic Assistance. We have been notified that The Shoreline has satisfied the compliance and eligibility requirements in the published Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) Growth Funding 2024-25 Grant Opportunity Guidelines (GO6887) and has progressed through the assessment stage. We hope to have good news regarding the implementation of

this program in the coming weeks.

Two years ago I relocated from Sydney’s Northern Beaches to Bellingen and am thoroughly enjoying the change. I am a registered nurse and have worked in the Aged Care Sector, in various roles for over thirty years. Outside of work I enjoy singing in a local community choir, listening to audible books, Pilates, swimming

and I have recently tried my hand at acting as a member of a local theatre group, which was a lot of fun !!

Feel free to reach out if you’d like to discuss any aspects of the Community Care Program or if you simply want to chat!

Thank you for welcoming me into this fantastic community.

Warm wishes Helen

RESIDENT Spotlight

JOHN PLUMMER

John and his wife Noeline have lived in Coffs Harbour for 25 years. They are the proud parents of two children Stephen and Mary Anne.

John was born in Maclean. Eldest of 7 children.

John’s father lived the farming life and was a ‘gun cane cutter’, as John puts it!

He worked with his gang, worked hard and instilled a lot of good principles into John’s life. But it was John’s mother who was the rock in the family, a wonderful woman who was a great influence on John.

John was 15 years old when he joined the Australia Post govt dept, as it was at the time.

Having parents who came out of the depression strongly believing in the security of a good job, John would find a job in a secure position that would lead to a 37-year long career with Australia Post. John’s first job was delivering telegrams on a pushbike once week and then the next

week he was the night telephone operator. At 18 he went to Sydney to become a post office clerk.

The district post office in Grafton was next, followed by some study. An administration course to become a post office inspector was a natural progression to further his qualifications.

In approx. 1963 John was transferred back to Maclean and during that time enjoyed playing his beloved Rugby League. As it happens, fate had plans. John had an accident and broke a finger, ended up in hospital and met a lovely nurse Noeline, who 4 years later would become his wife.

In 1969 John was promoted to Narrandera into a Junior of 2 inspector’s position. His role saw him visiting and auditing post offices in the region.

In 1973 John was promoted to Bathurst and would be the Senior inspector of 2. His position would see him visiting many post offices overseeing the mail delivery and assisting in a HR capacity at times.

Johns’ role in Bathurst saw him working on a project setting up a sorting centre, recruiting staff and overseeing the operation of the business. A busy job with long hours utilising his extensive experience, but also requiring lots of travel and time away from home. This time away from home travelling out to Dubbo and out west, meant he would be away from home for one year and one week, travelling up and back each week. It was clear he was very valuable to his bosses.

In 1990 John was promoted to Regional Manager Country South NSW. Half the state. This role was significant and meant a lot of hard work and high pressure overseeing so much of NSW.

In 1994 change swept through Australia Post and there was a reorganisation in the structure. John was promised a job in Canberra but it fell through and after some thought John opted to take a redundancy package and make a big life change.

After working for Australia Post, John decided to get into the motel business. He bought a motel in Nowra. Now this motel needed a bit of love which John and his wife were able to give. They enjoyed running the motel for 4.5 years. They loved the lifestyle, socialising with the many interesting people who stayed with them. Together they organised events, enjoyed the lifestyle and loved looking after people with great hospitality.

Leaving Nowra and coming up to Coffs

Harbour required a bit of deliberation. The decision was made to look after his mum in a house suited to them all, which led them to Diggers Beach. John’s mother passed away suddenly and even though they could have moved to Wollongong which was part of their original thoughts, they chose to stay in Coffs Harbour.

John and his wife Noeline continued to manage a few motels for people in a respite role, allowing hard working motel owners the opportunity to have a break.

John then enjoyed his time playing veterans golf for 10 years. A sport that brought him great joy, aiding Veterans from nearly every state in Australia and including New Zealand, to come together to play in competitions. Covid came along and would put a stop to this for John and Noeline.

So why did John choose to live at The Shoreline?

John learnt a lot about aged care as he watched his family’s lives change. Family members needing care, getting older, requiring care and passing away.

Living in a big house, John and Noeline needed to think about what was best for their future.

After a bit of thinking and consideration they chose The Shoreline.

For fun, John now enjoys playing golf twice a week, walking of course... no buggy.

Three days a week John enjoys the use of the gym and enjoys his charity work with Vinnies.

But don’t forget his love of Rugby League. The weekly get togethers with fellow Rugby League lovers in the Bombora Bar closes out the week during the season.

We love your big smile and your warm personality John! Be sure to say hi next time you see John.

THE SHORELINE APP

Don’t forget we have our Shoreline App available to all of our residents, which is provided for us to post photos and messages to your family and friends.

If you would like assistance with how to use the App, please ask Concierge and they will direct you to the right person.

UPDATE Leisure and Lifestyle

Winter is thawing out, and the weather is warming up, we look forward to Springtime once again!

During our cooler weather, our residents and visitors have enjoyed sitting by the cozy fire in the café lounge and library area, reading a good book or having coffee from the Pearl Café.

Our residents have continued to enjoy their activity calendar which includes movies in the Cinema, Happy Hour afternoons, Forever Fit with Henry, Seated Dance with Mandy and Fitness and Meditation with Kim. Rummikub is run by our IDL resident Marie, among other activities.

Our residents have enjoyed weekly bus trips around our local areas of Sawtell, The Jetty and Nana Glen. Thanks to our amazing volunteer Jeff, who drives our residents around our local area. You never know what you might see along the trip, koalas, kangaroos, whales or dolphins.

We have included some new activities on our calendar: a knitting group, no-bake cooking (which the residents have enjoyed), preparing fried rice, pavlovas and trifles. Reiki treatments, conducted by qualified Reiki practitioners here at The Shoreline, offer many benefits - mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual - and may aid in relaxation and pain management.

If you haven’t seen our calendar and would like a copy, please pick one up at Concierge anytime.

MEET MOLLY

RESIDENT Spotlight

Molly grew up in Ardlethan – The Riverina NSW. Molly’s father owned a property named ‘Warrawee’ that had been in the family for almost 100 years.

At the age of 13 Molly went off to boarding school in Sydney for a few years till she had to return to take care of her unwell parents. Once their health improved, Molly returned to Sydney to work in a children’s home. These children had survived the bombing after WW2.

When Molly was 16 years of age, she met her husband to be Ken. They married when Molly was 21 and were married for 72 years and went on to have three children of their own and one adopted daughter.

Ken felt the calling of God and as a result

they sold their property and moved to Sydney for two years of training at Bible college.

An invitation to minister in Cootamundra had them there for 6 years before moving to Coffs Harbour to lead the Baptist Church where Molly enjoyed teaching piano.

Molly’s husband Ken wrote a book titled ‘From Plough to Pulpit’. A copy of this book can be found in The Shoreline library.

Molly has enjoyed a good life growing up and living on the land enjoying growing her own vegetables and raising cattle for their own meat supply.

Molly came to The Shoreline early this year with her husband Ken, who has since passed away. Molly likes to carry on her husband’s legacy of telling everyone that ‘Gods way is the best way’. Molly is very thankful for God caring for her and taking care of her all these years.

Molly’s children are all now off on their own adventures. Molly keeps in regular contact with them all.

Say Hi to Molly if you see her!

What is Reiki?

Reiki, in a nutshell, uses healing energy and a soft touch that promotes a sense of relaxation and well-being and enhances

Reiki dates back many years.

Dr. Mikao Usui mastered it.

Dr. Mikao Usui was born in 1865 in a small town in Japan called Miyama Cho.

Reiki is split into two words: Reimeaning spiritual aura, and Kimeaning energy or power.

Reiki, in a nutshell, uses healing energy and a soft touch that promotes a sense of relaxation and well-being and enhances the body’s natural healing ability.

Reiki treatments are individual and people experience different benefits, such as reduced anxiety, improved pain management, emotional and mental well-being and spiritual and holistic experiences.

your Reiki treatment: Reiki involves the practitioner placing their hands slightly above the client’s body, starting at the head and finishing at the feet. This is followed by softly touching your feet; this is called grounding.

Human touch can be very powerful. Unwittingly, we rely on touch for every aspect of our lives, from a gentle touch of the hand or

shoulder to a hug. Through touch, we send messages such as support, love, care and our presence.

Our staff member Megan holds a double degree in the traditional Usui/Tibetan system of natural healing.

Megan has been a practicing Reiki practitioner since

Over the years, Megan has seen many clients who have benefited from treatments resulting in many different experiences and desired outcomes.

Megan is now offering this to our residents here at The Shoreline and already receiving a lot of positive feedback from those that have received the treatment.

Please see Megan if you would like any further information on Reiki.
