“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for being at my 99th birthday party and for all the lovely birthday cards I received from them. I would also like to thank and appreciate the wonderful assistance given by Shoreline staff and management in allowing this party to be held in the Bombora Bar.”
THE SHORELINE

Spring is here, and with it comes a renewed sense of energy, colour and excitement! As we step into this vibrant new season, there’s a buzz in the air. The days are getting longer, the gardens are blooming and the sunshine is shining just a little brighter. Spring is a time of growth, fresh starts and looking forward. What better place to do that than in a community as warm and welcoming as ours?

Before we get swept up in all that Spring has in store, let’s take a moment to look back at everything we’ve shared over the past few months, it’s been a busy, beautiful time here at The Shoreline.

Welcome GENERAL MANAGER UPDATE

The Shoreline Chronicles: Winter Wins and Warm Moments.
As we wrap up another vibrant quarter at The Shoreline, it’s time to pause, smile and celebrate the little (and not-so-little) wins that have made the past few months so much fun.
Let’s start with the buzz around the dining room, our food focus groups have been cooking up more than just meals. Thanks to your feedback, we’ve seen some delightful tweaks to the menu, with our residents now enjoying meals that better suit their tastes and preferences. Whether it’s the return of a favourite dish or the subtle swap of an ingredient, your voices have shaped the flavours of our days.

Speaking of voices, the ILU Resident Meeting in June was a standout

moment. Not only did we welcome two new faces to our leadership team - Ben Maling (Hospitality Services Manager) and Angela Nigro (Chief Finance Officer) - but we also saw a wave of resident engagement that reminded us why community matters. The PowerPoint might’ve been a bit like being back at school, but the energy in the room was electric.
On the care front, we’ve been quietly championing dignity and comfort. We have so many new staff training programs going on at the moment and change improvements occurring, I can barely contain my excitement. It’s the small things right? Also not to forget to mention the incredible nomination Aurielle (Director of Care) received for her contributions as a leader in our care environment, a nationally recognised award competing against the best in Australia.
And let’s not forget the tech triumphs! Behind the scenes we have completed a new app rollout which was met with cheers (and fewer error codes), marking a smooth transition to giving staff a more reliable way to clock in and out, see their rosters and pick up extra shifts. It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes win that makes everything run just a bit smoother for you, our residents.
Of course, no quarter is complete without a few chuckles. Whether it was a lounge donation query email I received marked “TOTALLY NOT IMPORTANT!!!” or the annual panic over budgets and government reporting requirements, your (both resident and staff alike) humour and heart have kept the tone light and the spirits high.
So here’s to The Shoreline spirit - where every day brings a new story, every challenge is met with kindness, and every success is shared with a smile. Thanks for being part of this journey. Let’s keep the good vibes rolling as we bloom into spring!

At just 16, she played in China and by 18, she was competing in the USA. Natasha’s enthusiasm for Futsal shines through in everything she does, and she loves sharing stories and experiences with our residents. Whether on the court or in the community, she brings energy, warmth, and a true love for the game.

DIRECTOR OF CARE UPDATE

Dear Residents, Families and Team.
I’m pleased to share several important updates that reflect our ongoing commitment to education, safety and excellence in care.
ELDAC Palliative Care Project –October Education
We are excited to announce that The Shoreline has been approved for a PEPA reverse placement as part of the ELDAC Palliative Care Project. This initiative includes:
A 2-day onsite education session on 1–2 October 2025, led by a specialist palliative care educator.
Participation from a small group of staff across departments, including our palliative care champions.
A broader goal of enhancing our palliative care approach and securing a $20,000 grant to support ongoing improvements.
This is a significant step in strengthening our end-of-life care services and embedding best-practice principles across our team.
Influenza A Outbreak – Response and Recovery
We recently experienced an Influenza A outbreak, which was managed in accordance with the NSW Flu Outbreak Coordination Handbook. Key actions included:
Daily updates to the Public Health Unit.
Isolation and cohorting of affected residents.
Enhanced infection control and PPE protocols.

We are proud to host 12-week placements for both nursing students and a speech pathology student. These placements provide valuable hands-on experience for future clinicians while enriching our care environment with fresh perspectives and enthusiasm. Our team is committed to supporting these students through structured supervision and learning opportunities. Please join us in welcoming them warmly.

Communication with families, GPs, and allied health providers.
We thank all staff and families for their cooperation and resilience during this time.
August Vaccination Program with TWC
Our vaccination clinic in partnership with TWC was held in August 2025. This included:
COVID-19 boosters for eligible
residents and staff.
Other vaccinations such as: Shingrix for shingles and pneumovax for pneumonia
Onsite administration with support from our clinical team.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement. Together, we are building a stronger, safer and more compassionate care community.
Aurielle Reyes

KATH CONWAY PHARMACIST
Do you or someone you know have a lung condition and need a puffer?
If yes, do you have a spacer?
Spacers are a cylinder with a one-way valve at the end. They are not just for kids!
If you have perfect technique for using your puffer without the spacer, only about one quarter of the inhaled dose gets down into the small airways where it is needed. Through a spacer, threequarters of the dose gets where you need it (see the white areas in the picture below)
This means:
you need less medicine
it costs less
you get less side effects
There are some great videos showing how to use and clean your spacer at the National Asthma Council: www.nationalasthma.org.au/
Ask your pharmacist to help you get the best technique & check if your puff will fit a spacer.

GARY WANT
Many of us know Gary for his deep love of opera and music, but there’s so much more to this fascinating man.
Gary was born on a farm near Maclean up on the Clarence River, where he grew up with his sister and two brothers. At the age of 16 he moved to Newcastle to study chemical engineering. He worked in the field for about 10 years before making a major career change, returning to university to study medicine.
Initially working as a doctor in orthopaedics, Gary eventually found his passion in occupational medicine. He became the Chief Medical Officer of the Coal Board, where he spent many years
conducting health checks for miners, diagnosing and treating lung disease and other work-related injuries. He even helped to establish rehabilitation services.
Gary’s career then took him to Esso in Sydney and Melbourne before he relocated to the United States. There, he became Medical Director for Europe and the Asia Pacific based in New Jersey and Virginia. His role saw him travelling the world, combining his professional life with his love of exploring new places.
A passionate scuba diver and underwater photographer, Gary has enjoyed diving and capturing marine life in some of the world’s most spectacular locations. His favourite dive spots? Right here along the NSW coast. And for opera? Nothing could beat the experience of The Met in New York City.
After retiring, Gary returned to Australia, continuing his love of photographythough hip surgery complications eventually led him to swap underwater photography for bird photography. Today, he has turned hundreds of his incredible images into beautiful photo books which he enjoys revisiting.
Gary and his beloved partner of 50 years Betty, built a life together in Newcastle. Following Betty’s passing three years ago, Gary made the decision to downsize and prepare for the future. He chose The Shoreline for its warm community and welcoming atmosphere, a decision he says was one of the best he’s ever made.
Though he only knew one person in Coffs Harbour before moving in, Gary has quickly settled in and found a new circle of friends. He’s an active participant in community activities, which has helped him feel connected and supported. Looking ahead, Gary is planning a trip to South West Queensland to continue photographing the beauty of the Australian landscape.
So next time you see Gary around, don’t forget to say Hi!
Independent Living UPDATE
As September rolls in, we can almost feel Winter’s chilly grip slowly loosening. The days are stretching longer, the sun feels just that little bit warmer, and there’s a real sense of anticipation for the Spring days ahead. I know most definitely for me anyway. Warmer months are just around the corner – and I can’t wait! Bring it on!
What an incredible few months it’s been. You’ve all been busy making memories, sharing smiles, and filling our Shoreline community with laughter and joy. From outings and events to everyday catchups and new friendships, you’ve shown what it truly means to belong.
When you move into The Shoreline, you’re not just getting the keys to a new apartment – you’re opening the door to a whole new family. Just like starting a new job brings new friendships, moving here brings a sense of belonging and support that is truly special.
We lift each other up through the good times and the hard. That’s what a family does.
As the wonderful William Butler Yeats once said:
“There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t met yet.”
And I couldn’t agree more.
It’s hard to put into words the magic of this community you’re all building! The last quarter has been packed with connection, celebration and creativity.
We ended May with a beautiful fine dining experience, and then capped off July with our much-loved Christmas in July celebration. What a night!

Delicious food, festive music, incredible decorations, and an atmosphere of pure joy. It reminded us of just how
powerful shared meals and laughter can be when surrounded by people who feel like family.
There have been ladies’ and men’s lunches, darts fun, exercise classes, choir visits, piano recitals, a fabulous fashion parade, birthday celebrations, and so much more. It truly never stops – and somehow, it keeps getting better.
So, as we say goodbye to Winter and look ahead to Spring, let’s keep the momentum going. Let’s dream up new ideas, create new memories and continue to make The Shoreline the extraordinary place it is.
We can’t wait to see what the next few months bring.

Ben Maling
HOSPITALITY SERVICES MANAGER
We’re excited to welcome Ben who has recently joined The Shoreline team as our new Hospitality Services Manager.
Ben brings with him a wealth of experience having worked in the food industry for nearly 30 years. Born and raised in Armidale NSW, Ben’s early years were filled with a love for rugby league and travel.
His culinary journey began in his hometown where he started his chef apprenticeship. In the third year of his apprenticeship, Ben made the move to Middle Park in Melbourne to further develop his skills. There he had the opportunity to work in several restaurants including Saucier Restaurant in Armadale, and Riva in St Kilda where he spent many years.

passion for food and hospitality eventually led him to open his own café, Café Affamato – Italian for “hungry”.
Most recently, Ben was the Head Chef at a local aged care facility in Coffs Harbour before joining us here at The Shoreline. Although aged care wasn’t part of his original career plan, Ben embraced the challenge and quickly adapted to the unique demands of the role, including learning about food textures, dietary compliance, and the importance of creating meaningful connections with residents.

Eventually, Ben returned to Armidale with his partner to start a family. Back home he ran the kitchen at the well-known Restaurant Q and held various head chef roles. Along the way he had the opportunity to work alongside and meet notable Chefs like Pete Evans and Jacques Reymond. His

Ben is also a proud father to four boys aged 13 to 22, each with their own passions ranging from sports and gym to landscaping and hospitality – just like Dad. Outside of work, Ben and his family love the great outdoors. Camping, rock climbing, fishing, body surfing, music and going bush are among their favourite pastimes. A talented musician, Ben is a member of two bands and even enjoys singing from time to time!
Ben brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to The Shoreline. He’s already begun working on updates to the aged care menu and making exciting enhancements to the café menu – including the recent addition of hot pies, sausage rolls, with soon to follow fresh pastries, and scones.

MIKE AND NANCY MOPPETT
Some things feel meant to be. I came to Australia from England, while Nancy was born in Cootamundra. Through family connections our paths crossed in Coffs Harbour, and it didn’t take long to discover a shared love of tennis that brought us even closer.
We were married on April 1st, 1961, not as an April Fool’s joke, but because it was Easter, a deeply meaningful time to both of us and our faith. Coffs Harbour has been home for
most of our lives, though we also spent a few years in Sydney. Over the decades, we’ve watched this beautiful community grow and change.
When we were told we wouldn’t be able to have children, we turned to adoption with open hearts. Just before our first adoption was finalised we received a surprise, Nancy was pregnant with our son David. A few years later we began the adoption process again, only to find history repeating itself, this time with the joyful news of our daughter Melinda. We raised our family with immense love and gratitude, embracing every unexpected blessing. Wanting to give back, we became Sunday school teachers at our local Methodist church, sharing our faith and joy with the next generation.

Together, we’ve been fortunate to travel the world three times, collecting memories and stories along the way. Today, we’ve made our home at The Shoreline, where we feel a true sense of belonging.
As we reflect on our journey, we feel blessed to have lived a life full of love, faith, family and adventure, just as we always hoped.
