The last three months have been full of life, love and laughter, we’ve celebrated Christmas together, New Year’s Eve, Australia Day, birthdays, and anniversaries, just to name a few and we invite you to partake in the array

of activities, programs and events designed to enrich your life and create meaningful connections.

We invite you to enjoy browsing through some of the memories from the past few months...

THE SHORELINE APP

Don’t forget we have our Shoreline App available to all of our residents, which is provided for us to post photos and messages to your family and friends.

If you would like assistance with how to use the App, please ask Concierge and they will direct you to the right person.

The Shoreline Quarterly

EMPLOYEE VALUES AWARD

We have recently introduced The Shoreline Quarterly Employee Values Award, which recognizes a staff member who displays qualities that are representative of The Shoreline values, which include caring, respect and excellence.

In December, the award winner was Ros, a valued member of our housekeeping team. Ros has been working at The Shoreline since February last year, and diligently ensures that our public spaces, as well as our resident’s rooms are always maintained to the highest standard.

Ros goes above and beyond, and nothing is ever an inconvenience, she happily fulfils her role daily, not just in her housekeeping role but also in her relationships that she has with staff and residents. She is a great example to her co-workers, and a great friend to many.

Congratulations on receiving this award Ros, you deserve it!

Director of Care

UPDATE

ACTING DIRECTOR OF CARE- AURIELLE

My name is Aurielle and I am a Registered Nurse.

When I decided to become a nurse, my mother told me that each Christmas, I would ask Santa for a “medical set” toys. Not sure why but according to her, I was so fascinated playing like a nurse or a doctor instead of playing dolls. My patients that time were my parents who were riding along with my pretend game. I guess at a young age, I knew what I wanted to be.

I finished my nursing degree in 2015, decided to be brave and move to a different country 2 years later.

In 2018, I moved to Coffs Harbour and from the moment I arrived, I realised that this will be my new home. It certainly has, especially since I met my husband here. We have 2 fur babies (a cat named Red and a rabbit named Roger) which keeps us on our toes 24/7!

I love working at The Shoreline as we all work as a team in providing the quality care for the

residents and we strive to improve the quality of service that we provide through feedback. Aged Care is challenging area to work, but having a good team like The Shoreline Team can make it easier and better.

Physiotherapy Update

Over the past 5 weeks, physiotherapy students

Alex and James have completed their clinical placement here at The Shoreline.

It has been an absolute pleasure to mentor the next generation of Health Professionals – Alex and James, as they navigate their final year at The University of Newcastle, pursuing a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours).

The Shoreline thanks you for your hard work, dedication, and contribution to providing exceptional care to our residents!

Wishing you continued success in your future endeavours.

ALEX MANIATIS

“Before starting my first clinical placement as a Physiotherapy student at The Shoreline, I was nervous and unsure what to expect. Having the opportunity to learn in such a supportive and friendly environment, coupled with an incredibly dedicated supervisor, has allowed me to transition the theory learnt at university, into genuine care for the residents. Connecting with the residents and staff has deepened my appreciation for the role Physiotherapists play in Aged Care”.

JAMES GEE KIYANNALAGE

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at the Shoreline. The staff were so welcoming and made me feel right at home from day one! I have learned a lot from Henry in these five weeks and gained a lot of valuable insights into what it is like to work in aged care. I was also very impressed by the level of care that the Shoreline staff provided to their residents and hope to one day provide a similar level of care as a working clinician.”

Leisure and Lifestyle UPDATE

Life is always exciting here at The Shoreline and as I reflect over the last quarter I’m stunned and pleased at how much we have accomplished and what we have achieved as a team.

Our residents continue to enjoy a jam-packed calendar of activities which included Christmas carols with The Coffs City Choir, Christmas lights bus tour of Coffs Harbour at dusk, an operatic performance by the daughter of one of our beloved residents, and Happy Hour afternoons with Mark and Dave, Tanya and Steve, Ian, and Ang.

The New Year marched right in and 2024 started with residents putting their hand towards trying a new Drumming activity. At The Shoreline we are always looking for new ideas and fun activities to do with our residents.

Forever Fit, Havin a Ball and exercises with Kim and Mandy continue to be a highlight on our calendar. This continues to make both Henry our Physiotherapist, and myself, happy knowing our residents are doing their best to stay fit and healthy daily, if they can keep up with all the various forms of exercise we offer here at The Shoreline!

We recently had Physiotherapy students complete their clinical placement at the Shoreline, and they did an educational presentation on osteoatrthritis and falls prevention, which was very informative and appreciated by all who attended.

Movie Mondays in the cinema, Australia Day celebrations, Shrove Tuesday Pancakes, Valentines Day and Saturday Rummikub with Marie our volunteer, were and continue to be highlights for our residents.

Our therapy dog Delilah now visits us weekly and is quickly developing ongoing, valuable relationships with our residents who look forward to seeing her bound in the door and give them a nice big lick!

Many of our residents will often be found enjoying a coffee with fellow residents, or friends and family in the Cafe. Don’t be shy, stop and say Hello if you pass them by on your next visit.

I look forward to what’s in store for the next few months and welcome a chat anytime!

Thanks

Birg

Introducing our lovely resident, Carl Eichmann, who recently celebrated his birthday here at The Shoreline.

Carl has lived in Coffs Harbour for approximately 50 years, having been born in Macksville.

Carl’s parents were early settlers in the Nambucca region. Carl’s greatgrandfather had timber mills and a coastal shipping company. Pictures of some of those sailing ships can be seen on the walls in his rooms, reminding him of the heritage he recalls with his great-grandparents.

Carl has always called NSW home and was married, raising a family with his wife. Carl is very proud of his two children, Louise and Shane. Carl has two grandchildren, Sophie and Lachie.

Carl has always loved owning dogs. He’s had a dachshund, a husky/ kelpie cross, and most recently, a rescue dog from the RSPCA who is a schnauzer/staffy cross named Indi, who is now being looked after by Carl’s granddaughter.

Carl enjoyed many years of sports, including playing squash and golf, and continues to love watching a cricket game unfold on TV.

Carl has most recently shared his love of poetry with other residents, attending our monthly poetry reading group with Ros, our volunteer.

Carl worked as a teacher at Coffs Primary School for 28.5 years, sharing his love for learning and teaching with the senior children in years 5 and 6.

One highlight Carl has was when he arrived in Coffs Harbour; it was April Fool’s Day in 1963. He taught 6A at the school, and the local mischievous boys put a thumbtack on Carl’s chair, making for a very memorable day with the children!

Carl enjoys the meals here at The Shoreline, and particularly, if he could choose, would love a serve of steak and eggs and fruit salad with ice cream. A man who is easily pleased.

Carl enjoys living here at The Shoreline. The staff are terrific, and he feels as though he is very well looked after.

You will often find Carl down in the Cafe enjoying coffee with family and friends. Say hi to Carl next time you see him.

Retirement Village News

What an incredible past few months it has been at The Shoreline!

We have had the pleasure of welcoming new residents with the opening of The Headland Terrace building, and our Village has been abuzz, the atmosphere has been warm and inviting as always, especially over the Christmas season.

It was lovely to see The Shoreline Community come together for a variety of events for both our Village and Aged Care residents. We had the Coffs City Choir sing Christmas Carols, the amazing Mezzo Soprano Kathryn Handsaker deliver the most beautiful operatic performance and our very own “Cellist in residence”, Saltwater Apartment resident Penny play some lovely Christmas favourites -that we were all able to sit down and singalong to.

The highlight to the end of the year would have to have been the Christmas Party in the Pavilion, it truly was one big family coming together, having a laugh, eating delicious food, and enjoying each other’s company. Many memories were made that night!

Post Christmas, we had New Year’s Eve celebrations, Australia Day by the Pool with Lamingtons and Meat Pies (you can’t get more Australian than that!) and in February- Valentines Day best dressed! Well done to Dorothy!

We recently started The Shoreline Travel Club, with its first information session held in late February. This is a joint initiative between The Shoreline and Helloworld Travel that gives our residents access to special offers and travel

opportunities. Our next Travel Club session will be in March, so look out for that in your weekly events calendar.

Last but not least, we finished off February with Chef Andrew’s Surf n Turf event in the Pavilion. It was a lovely night, Andrew and his team did a brilliant job putting together a feast for all to enjoy.

As this evening was such a success, Andrew has assured me that there will be more dinner events the future.

I’m sure that the months ahead will be busy, full of activities and our Shoreline family will continue to grow, share stories and maintain that social connection that we are already well known for in the local Coffs Harbour community!

Bill was born in Sydney on 28th March 1940. He has five siblings, four sisters and a brother. He grew up and lived in the suburb of Eastlakes, attending the local primary school and then St. Mary’s Cathedral School, until he gained his leaving certificate at 17.

Although Bill was good at school earning the Dux of the Class in Year 6, he was bullied by both children and teachers due to a stammer, so he for the most part, kept to himself.

As soon as Bill completed high school, he found a job as a Clerk for WD & HO Wills the British tobacco manufacturing company, he stayed there for 3 years and then went on to work for a stockbroker in Melbourne.

Bill moved back to Sydney after a year when his father became ill and found a job working for Ord Minnett, a stockbroking and wealth management group. It was during this time that Bill married his wife Patricia, whom he had met in 1958. Whilst working at Ord Minnett, Bill saw a future in computing, he applied and was successful in getting a job with the Australian Atomic Energy Commission, Bill worked as a computer operator and taught himself computer programming. He states… “the computer back then was the size of a large room, and worth about 8 million dollars.”

Life was very busy for Bill, not only was he busy with work, he and wife Patricia were also busy with raising a family, four girls - twins Donna and Lisa, Gail, Sharon and a son, Patrick.

“Interesting fact about the twins” Bill states… “Back in the day you could take out twin insurance, which was a lump sum if you were indeed to have twins and as it turns out we did, even though there was no history of twins in the family. The 500 pounds lump sum certainly came in handy (equivalent to approx. $10,000 today).

Career wise, Bill was advancing within the computer industry and in 1966, was Chief Computer Programmer for the Sydney Stock Exchange. After two years here, he thought he would strike out on his own and start a computer programming company, so in 1968 Wacher Partners was founded. Bill’s company expanded to staff around 30 employees and after 5 years he retired from the company that he founded and moved with his family to Sawtell.

At this stage Bill was in his early 40s and as he had spent a lot of time away from home committed to his work responsibilities, he decided to “retire” early and spend quality time with his young family.

Retirement Village News - March 2024

The five children happily settled into life on the mid north coast and Bill didn’t stay retired for long.

He built a motel called The Coasters in Sawtell, The Kooyong block of units as well as The Cadman townhouses, all in Sawtell. He also rebuilt the Sawtell Surf Club of which he is a Life Member. Bill served on the Coffs Harbour Council in 1974 (when another Shoreline resident, Ken Gentle was the Shire engineer) and in 1984 he was named Coffs Harbour Citizen of the Year…. So much for retiring!!

After the children completed their secondary education in the Coffs area, Bill and his family moved back to Randwick in Sydney

so the children could have the opportunity to attend university. They completed their tertiary education and then went on to have successful jobs and families of their own.

Bill has 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, and is close to his family with two of his daughters living in Coffs Harbour, and the other children visiting regularly. Bill’s wife Patricia, sadly passed away six years ago.

Bill enjoys a hit of golf, his favourite course is The Lakes in Sydney, where he has been a Life Member for 66 years!

Bill moved back to Coffs Harbour in 2022, and after a lot of looking around, decided on The Shoreline

because of the location and the lifestyle. When asking what he loves about The Shoreline, Bill states “The facilities are fantastic, it took a little while to settle in being single, but I have met some lovely people and I really enjoy the company.”
