Editor’s Letter

We hope you’re enjoying the school holidays and summer weather, finally the sunscreen is in use!

This month our cover image is from the upcoming Henfield Theatre Company production of Goodnight Mister Tom, we know tickets will sell fast for this October production so please do book yours soon. HTC’s productions really do ‘punch above their weight’ for professionalism, acting talent and stage production, and we love seeing their investment in local youth talent with the Summer Theatre School.

This issue we’re continuing the theme of celebrating younger people in our village with an update on Henfield Youth Club activities, and some lovely photos of St Peter’s School Leavers Party. It’s nice to see the achievements of local young people, which are being highlighted by Henfield Parish Council with their recent initiatives.

Please do get in touch if you have a positive story to share. At BN5 we really enjoy highlighting all that’s good about living in Henfield and remind everyone how welcoming this village is, and how lucky we are to live in such a lovely community surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Learning keeps us young and lively!

Here at the Arts Society Henfield you can listen to our wonderful speakers talk about all manner of things that you may never have thought about before. How artists painted tanks to camouflage them from the enemy, the glorious music of Renaissance Venice, about the controversial Elgin marbles from Greece, modern Jazz, and the towering works of Rembrandt. This brief list gives you an idea of the talks that keep us learning, stimulated and looking forward to our next talk. In addition, your committee also organise outings, a Christmas lunch, raffles, a coffee morning and run a website and Facebook to keep everyone in touch. We try to have a real community feel. Why not come along to Henfield Hall and talk to us? We meet on the second Monday of the month at 2pm, or you can pop in to our Open Morning on Saturday 21 September for some coffee and cake from 10am-12pm to find out more. www.theartssociety.org/henfield Jenny Ives

Walk for Malcolm

On Sunday 14th July, Henfield village celebrated Malcolm Eastwood’s contribution to Henfield as a Parish Councillor, District Councillor, citizen and friend to so many. The sun shone, there was a light breeze and lots of happy faces as walkers

registered to take part in a wonderful walk from Henfield Common to Sussex Prairie Gardens. Thank you to the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who came along to help.

Councillor Gill Perry lead the first group of walkers as they made their way over stiles, bridges and a few brambles. They were greeted on the route by our lovely marshals, keeping everyone smiling and going in the right direction! The route closely followed one of Malcolm’s trails. These can be found on the Hidden Henfield website.

Once at Sussex Prairie Gardens, the walkers were welcomed by Elaine Goodyear and Belinda Samrah from Henfield Parish Council. Entry to the Gardens was free to the walkers thanks to the generosity of Pauline & Paul, owners of the Prairie Gardens.

We thank the walkers for their generous donations to the Brainstrust, the family’s chosen charity. We are still collecting so should you wish to make a contribution, please use the Just Giving Page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/ malcolmeastwood1711637618077.

Henfield Foodbank

As the local collector for the Horsham District Foodbank, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who donates to the Foodbank. Every ten days or so, I drive up to Horsham to deliver what we have collected in Henfield, from our collection points at Sainsbury’s, Corpus Christi, St Peter’s, and our petfood collection in Hawthorn Vets. Each trip, with six or seven crates, 150 or so items, about 70 kg of foodstuffs, is a very impressive contribution to helping the less fortunate in our community. Thank you all.

As you may know, Henfield is part of the district-wide Horsham Matters network, and the volunteers at their central depot use the items you kindly donate to make up emergency food parcels (over 10,000 delivered across the District last year), as well as keeping the Horsham base and Mobile Hub (Henfield Library Carpark, Fridays, 11.45 – 1.00) fully stocked.

Should the need arise, to access the Foodbank, call 0300 124 0204; they are discreet and confidential, and as well as offering practical help they will also give advice and support, and signpost other agencies that can assist you. The generosity of our Henfield community has been heart-warming and is so much appreciated. There are many individuals and families whose income hasn’t kept up with the cost of living, or for whom school holidays, a sudden change in circumstances such as loss of employment, an unexpected bill, or an essential household appliance breaking down, can have a dramatic effect on the household budget. Please continue to support our Foodbank. Thank you so much. Roger, Foodbank volunteer

Newtimber Church Open Day

St John the Evangelist church in Newtimber is an open church where visitors are always welcome. This rural gem has been witness to significant events in global history, with links to the enslavement of Africans in Jamaica, a prominent abolitionist as well as offering a resting place for the souls of the SS Mendi disaster of 1917. Come and learn more about the unique imperial heritage of this 13th century churches history on Saturday 7th September. Refreshments will be served 10.30am – 4pm.

Newtimber is a perfect place to bring a picnic; there is on road parking and a brick path up to the church. There are benches to rest and enjoy the views while children can have a go at the free woodland summer activities or hide and seek along the mown paths. This is a completely safe area for children to explore. There is a water station and a WC, unfortunately access is not wheelchair friendly. https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk

Small business grants coming soon!

Horsham District Council has announced a new round of LEAP small business grant funding to support local businesses, which will open to applications on Monday 2 September at 10am. Grants of up to £2,000 will be available for small Horsham District based businesses and start-ups with a project idea for their business.

Additionally, Green LEAP grants of up to £5,000 will be available for climate-friendly projects which will not only help future-proof businesses but also support the achievement of their climate action ambitions.

It is a requirement that all applicants submit a business plan to qualify for consideration, so businesses are advised to review their business plans now, so they can submit their application early. It is vital businesses prepare early as grants will be assessed and allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Applications will close again once all funding has gone.

To help businesses understand what is required, a ‘How to write your business plan’ video is available to watch for free on the West Sussex Business Hub. This can be accessed via the Council’s website at: www.horsham.gov.uk/leap

The next round of LEAP funding opens to applications on Monday 2 September at 10am and will close 3pm on Friday 27 September, or earlier if all funding is allocated. Horsham District Council

Henfield Common – A Fair Tradition

In 1647, the Survey of Henfield recorded two annual Fairs, taking place in the village and on Henfield Common. These were turbulent times in England with civil wars raging between the King’s loyalists and Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentary Roundheads – by 1651 King Charles II had to flee for his life cross country to Shoreham, thence to France. Through all these times, tiny rural Henfield continued to celebrate village Fairs up to around 1830. Henry de Candole’s ‘Story of Henfield’ also describes a ‘White Hart Club Day’ when the High Street was filled with a lively Fair, and Pillory Green, once next to Cagefoot Lane, was also a site for annual fairs.

It is on our beautiful Henfield Common where a Fair has lasted in one form or another down the years. Henfield Parish Council used to organise this event in partnership with the BP Guild, WI and

Part-time Bookkeeper

Needed for Henfield company

Reliable, qualified (AAT or similar) with a minimum of 2 years’ experience. 15-20 hrs/week flexible. Sage experience preferred. Full details and apply at: www.acaciarental.com/bookkeeper

those people must be thanked for carrying this tradition. This year some people met informally to talk about bringing back our Common Fair once more, and it’s clear that there is great enthusiasm for coming back together to celebrate, show our cakes, jams, flowers, art and veg, see animal shows, listen to music, share delicious food, and enjoy the traditional entertainments of a Fair as a community. Funding is the crux of the matter, and work is taking place on this.

We have been talking to all those previous organisers, thank you to all who’ve talked to us and given their strong support. More information will come, but for now keep 19th July 2025 in mind, consider a winter craft project (soft material or hard), taking some lovely photos, practising your lemon drizzle…

Sports Day Fun at The Dove

At The Dove Nursery on Henfield Common we have a tradition of the ‘Posy Race’ where children run to their mums or dads with a posy of flowers and a big hug!

We had a lovely sports day this year, starting with the children singing some favourite songs including ‘You’re a pink toothbrush’. This was followed by some dances the children love to do with Sally-Ann from Let’s Dance school.

We then had our French Boule competition which the children play with French instructions and our mini races. All the children won medals and certificates and a bubble wand, which were presented at the end along with our School Leavers presentations. Families stayed for picnic lunches before breaking up for end of term.

Staff would like to thank all our parents and friends for their continued support. We are taking bookings for places left in September, email dove_nursery@btinternet.com or ring 07966 071859 for more information.

Henfield Shed is moving!

By the time you read this article, Henfield Shed will very nearly have moved from our current premises in the High Street to our new temporary location.

Following our plea in July’s BN5 and on Facebook, a local family came forward to offer us a new, temporary location in Small Dole. We are incredibly grateful to him and his wife for providing us a lifeline, albeit for the next couple of years. What a great community we live in and how good Social media can be, if used in the right way.

I would like to thank every one of you who took the time to post your support and to suggest a number of site locations where we could set-up our charity, all of which were investigated.

If you’d like to get in touch with The Henfield Shed please email us info@Henfieldshed.org.uk, send us a message via our Facebook page or webpage or phone Pete on 07770 935709.

We have been very lucky to be able to operate from two High Street locations due to the generosity of local businesses since 2017. This has allowed members of the village and the wider community to drop in and bring jobs and repairs into us. Since then, we have repaired and built hundreds of projects for you, local organisations and other charities. We hope moving to Small Dole will not stop this and we are in the process of working out how we can meet faceto-face again to take in work. Until we can formulate a plan, please can I ask that you use the links listed above to make contact with us, we can arrange to pick up any item for repair or take the job details and make whatever you require.

Thank you once again for your support over the years.

Memorial to infants in Henfield Cemetery

People visiting Henfield Cemetery will notice that Henfield Parish Council have recently installed a memorial plaque along the hedge-line, as well as a notice board listing the names of the infants who are buried in this area.

For some years, occasional visitors have used the hedge as a cut-through, without realising that the area they walked over contained unmarked graves. Henfield Parish Council attempted to block gaps in the hedge, but sadly the barriers were repeatedly removed.

With the installation of this memorial, these individual infant graves will be given the respect that they deserve. Please keep dogs on a lead and please be respectful when walking in the area.

During Victorian times when these young children and babies were buried, it was quite usual for graves to be un-marked, as gravestones were expensive. The children were recorded and buried in single graves.

Thanks go to Alan Barwick for his research into the dates, names and ages of the infants laid to rest in this area.

Henfield Computer Club Presentation

Digital Legacy, Password Managers & My Future Care

An important presentation covering how to ‘remember’ all those passwords, what is ‘digital inheritance’ and ‘introducing a great tool for later life’ planning takes place at Henfield Computer Club on Wednesday 4 September. Knowing the difference between a login ID and a password is important, but being able to remember them all is impossible! Learn the surest methods of keeping them safe and accessible. When something unexpected happens to you how would your nearest and dearest gain access to your passwords and your digital life and manage the transition?

We will introduce the wonderful handbook ‘My future care - live for today, plan for tomorrow’. The Handbook is packed with information and prompts relating to your wishes should you require the support of others. The handbook includes checklists, planning tools and templates to help you make decisions and put them into action. It is designed so you can also make

notes. For those interested, we will be holding a workshop on Wed 18th Sept to help guide you through the Handbook. We ask for a donation of £5 per handbook.

The presentation will be held in the Garden Room, Henfield Hall. The talk will start at 10am and last about an hour, with time for Q&A afterwards. The cost for members is £2, non-members £3 and includes refreshments. If you would like to book a place at the presentation on 4th Sept or the Workshop on 18th Sept, please email henfieldcomputerclub@gmail.com.

Henfield Garage Sale & Give Your Stuff Away Day

After the success of the July Henfield Garage Sale and Give your stuff away day we have scheduled another for the last weekend of September. If you are interested you can sign-up via the Google Form (https://t.ly/WcmID) or by scanning the QR code.

So that we can do some more print advertising we are asking for a small donation of £2 to cover printing and laminating of posters and a printed

map. This can be paid for by following the link when you book.

Any surplus will be carried over to the next one or donated to a local cause. We look forward to lots of houses getting involved!

Taking Newspaper Needs Volunteers

The UK’s first Talking Newspaper was founded by Ronald Sturt in 1970. It started with reel-to-reel tapes which were hand-delivered to about twenty people in the Aberystwyth area.

It proved very popular and, with the availability of the new cassette tape, many new Talking Newspaper services were formed. By 2000 there were around 530 Talking Newspapers in UK, all operating as charities.

Did you know that Horsham has had a Talking Newspaper, known as Roundabout Talking News, since 1978? It is a free service run entirely by a team of volunteers.

Horsham’s Roundabout Talking News is a service offered to all blind or partially sighted residents of Horsham and the surrounding areas. It is published weekly and features news articles from that week’s West Sussex County Times. In addition, there is a more informal magazine section which covers amusing and interesting articles from other publications, information about what is on at local cinemas and theatres, local sport etc.

Recording takes place at the studio in the Drill Hall, Horsham on Thursday onto memory sticks which are sent out individually in special postagefree wallets. They are posted on Friday and arrive with listeners in one or two days. Having listened to the publication, listeners return the memory stick to Roundabout. The whole service is provided free to the listener; there are no joining fees, a memory stick player can be loaned and postage is free. Recently the recordings have also been made available online or via ‘Alexa’.

This valuable service is in urgent need of volunteers to join the teams undertaking parts of the production process, namely:

Editing team Thursdays from 4pm, generally twice a month

Magazine team Thursdays from 5pm – generally two weeks every other month

Recording engineers Thursdays from 5pm –generally every other month. If you are interested either in receiving the service or in volunteering, please go to www.horsham.mytn.uk or call 01403 850 851.

Ann Jury, a tribute

Ann was a much-loved member of the Henfield community, she died on 26 June in Red Oaks Nursing Home shortly before her 91st birthday, where she had moved only 10 days before from her home.

Ann and her husband David were long-time residents of Henfield coming to the village from Leicestershire in the early Sixties. They moved into a newly-built Guildway bungalow in Furners Lane which was, in those days, in close proximity to apple orchards and vegetable produce fields. David had served time with the RAF in Cyprus and so, in the following years, they spent several enjoyable holidays there and on some Greek islands always exploring on a scooter. Ann, who was a proficient cook, loved to savour the Cypriot Mezes and Greek Moussaka.

In their early life in Henfield Ann was a representative for Avon Cosmetics later rising to a managerial position. Her and David were delighted to find Henfield had a Theatre Group and both became early members.

Ann joined the Henfield Tennis Club in the Sixties which only had two courts and a wooden hut for the members at that time, she remained a tennis member for many, many years serving twice as Captain and also as Secretary, writing all her Minutes by hand! Together with a team of helpers she enjoyed arranging the annual Ladies’ Days. Ann was latterly made an Honorary Life Member and was also awarded an LTA Life Membership for her services to grassroots tennis.

Ann’s other predominant love in life was gardening and she established a beautiful garden growing many specialised plants over the years. She became an early member of the village Vegetable & Produce Association followed on subsequently by membership of the Sussex Hardy Plants Society and the Henfield Garden Club. She was a competent flower arranger working for some years at South Lodge by invitation and making floral table arrangements for friends’ family weddings.

Ann led a full and enjoyable life, making many friends along the way. In recent years, when hospitalised for a broken hip, the nursing staff expressed they had never seen a patient receive so many visitors over the weeks she was recuperating.

In her final years Ann was very grateful for the wonderful dedication, care and friendship of the loyal team of Henfield Home Checks ladies. Ann, the forever and efficient organiser and great friend to many, will be missed but never forgotten. Pat Hemsworth

Henfield Scouts Awards

On 17th July, 1st Henfield Scout Group held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), the 117th since its founding in 1907. The very well attended event, to the point there was standing room only, enjoyed an introductory video from outgoing Chief Scout Bear Grylls, a review of the year and an excellent video by a parent volunteer of the benefits of volunteering in the Group.

The evening was also recognised of some outstanding achievements over the past year with many awards being presented across our diverse membership from the ages of four upwards.

The highlight of the evening included a number of awards, including a Commissioners Commendation, for our outgoing Treasurer Graham Denyer. Graham has been active in the Scout Association since 1953, when in the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation he joined as a Cub Scout at 1st Thames Ditton Scout Group, in Esher. He moved through the Sections at Thames Ditton, from Cubs, to Scouts, to Senior Scouts

and eventually their Rover Scout Service Crew. I am pleased to say his former Group, 1st Thames Ditton, are still active today in the form of The Ditton’s Scout Group.

Graham later moved away from Surrey to the delights of Henfield, and with children in the Group he naturally stepped forward to volunteer when help was required. In addition to helping at camps and section evenings, Graham took on the key role of treasurer in 1985. In total Graham served an incredible 39 years as treasurer, seeing many a Group Chair, Group Scout Leader and Leader come and go, but throughout Graham kept a firm hand on the accounts making sure the Group was always financially viable and served

throughout as a Trustee on the Scout Executive Committee, and more recently the Trustee Board.

As well as being an important member of the Scout Group, Graham also had other roles connected to Scouting - not least as a member of the Henfield BP (Baden Powell) Guild and for many years the key “Elf” to which many a forgotten present was delivered on Christmas Day morning.

It was a privilege to see our new Chairman Giles Welsh and District Commissioner Cameron Baldock, along with our oldest Scout Frankie, present Graham with some gifts and awards for his magnificent service to 1st Henfield and Scouts in general over many years.

We all at 1st Henfield Group thank Graham for all he has done for the benefit of the young people in Henfield and wish him a long and happy retirement. We hope to see him at events in the future, as we know he will still take a keen interest in the Groups progress.

Lancing College Chapel

Lancing College Chapel is a nationally important masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture and a Grade I Listed monument.

Lying within the grounds of Lancing College, an independent day and boarding school, and nestled in the South Downs National Park, it is a treasured and iconic Sussex landmark.

Founded in 1868, Lancing College Chapel is the largest school chapel in the world, with the height of the nave an impressive 90 feet. Discover the immaculately curated architecture that has witnessed beautiful additions and restorations throughout its history, from the stained-glass window consecrated by Desmond Tutu in 2007 to the altar tapestries woven on William Morris looms. The Chapel welcomes visitors and is open daily from 10am to 4pm and from noon to 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays (closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday & Easter Sunday).

For the last 40 years there has been a continuous campaign of stone conservation, alongside completing the building of the Chapel which was finished in 2022, 154 years after its foundation. It has won many awards and its architecture is breathtaking, which only those who visit can truly appreciate.

The upkeep and maintenance of the whole building is relentless. Every breath of wind, every drop of rain, every storm, every frost, every pigeon and every insect degrade the structure and cause damage which must be repaired, and that’s where the The Friends of Lancing Chapel come in! The Friends is a charity completely independent of the school, which has been giving financial support and professional advice to the Chapel for over 70 years. It is easy to become a Friend and membership is not expensive. Plus you will receive exclusive invitations to events and concerts as well as priority booking for the carol service – an occasion not to be missed!

The Friends of Lancing Chapel will be hosting its annual Festival in the afternoon of Saturday 28 September with guest speaker John Goodall, architectural editor of Country Life. Attendance is free and to find out more about the event and becoming a Friend, please contact the Hon Secretary via email:

Henfield Youth Club –A whole new year!

September sees the start of a brand-new academic year for us at Henfield Youth Club. We will have some fresh new faces coming through the doors of our junior sessions as the new Year 3 pupils will be able to join us this month. We will also see our young people who have just gone into year 7 moving on from juniors and joining us at our senior sessions on Thursday evenings instead.

Last year was a very busy year for us here at Youth Club, with lots of exciting things happening. We kicked off with our regular Junior and Senior sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and our Poppin’ Café open on Fridays for young people aged 13 years and over.

We welcomed two new members of staff to the team, who have been working away behind the scenes to offer even more fun, engaging events as well as assisting our wonderful manager, Debbie Slaughter, with the running and operation of the Youth Club. They hit the ground running,

throwing themselves into the crazy world of Youth Club and bringing some wonderful new ideas to the table. A big thank you once again to Henfield Parish Council, who kindly gave us the grant needed to take on our new staff, with whom we would now be lost without.

That wasn’t the only grant we were lucky enough to receive this past year, and it would be too lengthy to name all the wonderful support we’ve received, but we wanted to voice how grateful we are for each and every grant, donation and little bit of help. We also have some fantastic volunteers who give their time, knowledge and support to us and all our members. We’re so thankful for each and every one of them.

One of our volunteers, Aaron, even came runner up for the Horsham District Councils Young Volunteer of the Year award for all his help at Youth Club; well done Aaron and thank you for all your help! Also, a huge thank you to our Jackie who works tirelessly applying for various grants, selling donated items to help us raise funds and offers up her time to help run our evening sessions, often supplying us with her delicious baked goods! These aren’t our only volunteers that we’re lucky enough to have supporting us, so a big thank you to them all. We’ve been extremely busy planning various projects and events for the young people and have loved being able to offer so much variety. This was made much easier thanks to the Sussex Community Foundation who gave us a grant allowing us to provide so many excellent

“We’ve been extremely busy planning various projects and events for the young people and have loved being able to offer so much variety”

project nights. We’ve had a DJ workshop, a NERF event, graffiti night, cooking classes, babysitting course, SEN evenings and talks from locally trained therapists around communicating with your teenager and dealing with anxiety. We are a welcoming family here at Youth Club, so if you or young person haven’t been down to visit us, then please do. We are extremely lucky to have an amazing staff and volunteer team – a lot of whom were once members themselves! Our extraordinary manager, Debbie Slaughter, truly is the backbone of the Youth Club, she goes above and beyond to make sure we’re able to offer all that we do. She has been managing the Youth Club for over 30 years, keeping the place going and supporting the young people of the village and beyond. We feel extremely privileged to be able to provide such an invaluable service to our local young people - the sheer numbers we see through our doors each week speaks for itself!

Watch this space for new plans and exciting events for next year. Please do feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or would like to know more information about anything we have to offer. We are on social media, so make sure

Just a reminder...

Just a reminder that our Junior sessions are for young people in Year 3 – Year 6 on Tuesdays 6pm – 7.30pm and our Senior sessions are for young people in Year 7 –Year 12 on Thursdays 7.30pm – 9pm. Both sessions are term time only and cost £2.50 per young person.

to keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages. You can email if you’d like to book the Youth Club for private events during weekends, or if you’re a business that would like to discuss running an event or project evening with us. Here’s to another amazing year at Youth Club!

Henfield’s Paul Samrah is raising funds to refurbish an ambulance, fill it with supplies, and personally deliver it to Lviv in Ukraine as part of a 7-vehicle convoy leaving London on 22 September.

Paul, who has recently retired after over 40 years with Moore Kingston Smith (MKS), will be recognised locally not only for his monthly finance article in this magazine, but also for his contribution over many years to Brighton & Hove Albion FC, to Henfield FC and as the compère for the Henfield Hall Annual Quiz.

Paul and his friend and co-driver Doug Elliott have already smashed their initial target of £15,000 through the MKS Community Foundation for Medical Life Lines Ukraine (MLLU) and as we go to print, the current fundraising figure stands at over £28,000, with funds still coming in.

These funds will cover purchasing, renovating and stocking the ambulances with medical and practical aid, including dressings, equipment and defibrillators, as well as driving to the Ukraine and delivering the aid to the Ukraine Health Ministry.

Paul is are also now accepting donations of men’s warm dark clothing, sleeping bags,

MEDICAL LIFE LINES UKRAINE

crutches and other mobility aids, yoga mats, hand warmers, energy tablets and Sudocrem

To donate, please take your items to the Henfield Parish Office (open 9am-2pm Mon-Thurs, 9am1pm Fridays) before 16 September.

Although having exceeded their initial target, Doug and Paul are still actively fundraising. To support this great cause, please visit the JustGiving page (where you can claim Gift Aid) by clicking on the QR code below. Alternatively you can make a BACS transfer with the following details: Account Name: Moore Kingston Smith Community Foundation; Sort Code: 40-05-20; Account Number: 22224763 (please reference ‘ambulance’).

We wish Paul a safe and successful journey. Thank you for your contributions, which will go a long way to provide invaluable support for the Ukrainian people.

Sarah Butler

Since the 24 February 2022 invasion, Medical Life Lines Ukraine has delivered over 70 ambulances to war-torn areas of Ukraine. These include destinations such as Kyiv City Hospital, Mykhailovsky Hospital, Boryspil neonatal centre, Okhmadyt Children’s Perinatal, Poltava, Chernihiv hospitals, Medical Plaza centre in Dnipro, Pervomaisk in Kharkiv region, Odessa emergencies services, Lviv, Kharkiv A&E, Pobuzhie Children’s, Artziz district hospital, Elderly home in Kirovograd region and others.

As Russia continues to target civilian infrastructure including apartments, hospitals and electricity generation, the demand for humanitarian aid, civil defence support and medical supplies is unrelenting. Medical Life Lines Ukraine works in partnership with the registered charity BritishUkrainian Aid (reg number 1164472). For more information see www.medicallifelines.org.uk.

St Peter’s School Year 6 Leavers Prom

On Friday 12 July the Year Six children from St Peter’s School Henfield celebrated completing 7 years at the school with a Prom themed party at the Henfield Hall. An event such as this can never happen without help from the local community so the parents of the children would like to say a massive thank you to the following people and local businesses.

The Kindersley Trust - Thank you to Eric and the trustees of the Kindersley Trust for their very generous donation to the party which enabled us to purchase many items that the children will be able to benefit from for years to come.

The Henfield Hall - A big thank you to the staff and volunteers at the hall who were so helpful with our many queries and set up and take down. A special mention to Dave for all his hard work.

St Peters School Henfield PTA - Another big thank you to the wonderful PTA without whom many events would not happen, this one included. If your children are attending St Peters School from September 2024, please do sign up to become a helper. They really are a wonderful group of ladies.

Fiona at Stokes - A big thank you to Fiona for donating the sweets for our candy cart. Many dentists will be groaning but the children were very appreciative of your kindness as always.

Jeremys - A big thank you to Jeremy for donating the fruit for our chocolate fountain. Another local business that always offers their support.

Marcus Grimes - Another big thank you to Nelly and Alexa at Marcus Grimes for letting us use their candy floss machine.

The Bradley-Hudson Family - Thank you for storing the gear, refurbing the candy cart, helping on the day and just being wonderful.

Lindsey & Joe - Apparently the best mocktails ever made according to the children – we may have to recruit them for a parent party very soon!

Hettie Carter - For taking some incredible pictures for us on the night - making it feel like a real prom. Thank you so much.

Nicola and Graham Woodley - Thank you for keeping us all fed with delicious food from your van on the night. Another amazing local business.

All of the year six parent volunteers - A HUGE thank you to all the mums and dads who help prior to the event and on the night, donated chocolate fountains, cupcakes and many assorted items. We really couldn’t have pulled it off without each and every one of you.

BRINGING NATURE TO LIFE AT SCHOOL WITH SUSSEX GREEN LIVING

Earlier this year, Sussex Green Living and Horsham Green Spaces brought their ‘Wildways’ Roadshow to Shelley Primary School in Broadbridge Heath, all thanks to a grant from the Parish Council. This one-day event was designed to spark enthusiasm in kids and their families for nature corridors, teaching fun and practical ways to nurture these green spaces at home or in the community. The roadshow showed how human life and wildlife can live in harmony.

Broadbridge Heath Parish Council’s biodiversity policy found a perfect partner in Sussex Green Living for this event, aligning perfectly with our goals. The roadshow supported their ‘Action Plan’ for the year with engaging and educational activities.

On the day, there were loads of activities to capture the kids’ attention and imagination:

• Surveying a Local Wildlife Area: The kids learned how to make these areas more valuable for wildlife.

• Creating a Habitat Map: They explored the playing field and forest school area, documenting the different species they found.

• Grow Your Own Session: Each child learned about the benefits of growing their own food, planting seeds to take home and nurture.

• School Planting: The children planted saplings on their school grounds, learning about soil and how to care for the plants over time.

Parish Council representatives were present throughout the day, providing a wonderful opportunity to showcase our work and engage children in activities that encourage them to become future guardians of nature.

The kids’ enthusiasm and engagement were truly infectious, and we can’t wait to bring this roadshow to more schools.

We’re also excited about our Pollination Education Station Trail. Southwater Junior, Castlewood, William Penn, Billingshurst, North Heath and Trafalgar Primary already have these fantastic luxury bug hotels installed, thanks to sponsors Southwater Parish Council, Sussex Green Living, Wates Developments, Horsham Trafalgar Neighbourhood Council and Envitia Ltd. These eye-catching installations teach children about the vital role of pollinators, and we hope to see many more pop up across Sussex this year.

Magic & Sparkle at the Tree Festival

It feels a little early to be talking about Christmas, but we’d love to hear from any businesses or organisations who’d like to participate in our Christmas Tree Festival at the Evangelical Free Church, which is set to be bigger, better and even more sparkly this December!

Once again we are hosting and we do hope you will be a part of it! This is a well-loved event and a cornerstone of the village Christmas celebrations, and we invite businesses, community groups, families and individuals to create a sparkling, creative display.

The festival will take place on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th December, with your unique tree on display for the village to enjoy. On the 8th we will be having our Christmas Tree Service at 10.30am. This year we will also be having a special children’s competition – create your own tree decoration. Spaces are limited for trees so please book now by calling Karmel on 01273 959522, email church@henfieldefc.org.uk, or by filling out the form here and dropping it through the Free Church letterbox in the High Street.

Get your thinking caps on, be inventive and creative, and maybe get some little Christmas elves to help you!

As well as the amazing trees and decorations, there will also be a photo booth, carol singing and a special appearance from the Christmas donkey on Friday night. Come along and enjoy this free, fun, and very sparkly event!

Henfield Theatre Company perform ‘GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM’

‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ is a 2011 play by David Wood, based on the 1981 children’s novel of the same name by Michelle Magorian. It premiered in 2011 at the Chichester Festival Theatre, before moving to London in 2013 at the West End Phoenix Theatre. The play earned the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment at the 2013 Laurence Olivier Awards. Many will recognise the story from the 1998 film adaptation, starring John Thaw as Tom Oakley and now Henfield Theatre Company are honoured to be able to perform this stunning play for you from 17 to 19 October 2024. Set at the beginning of World War II, William Beech (played by Finn Donegan) is sent to Tom Oakley (played by Ian Henham) in rural Dorset as a child refugee from London. Tom, a reclusive widower, has been a solitary resident for 40 years; William is illiterate, bruised, and starving. Despite initial difficulties, Tom nourishes William physically and emotionally until William has to return to London. In the second act, William is back in London as the Blitz continues around him. Tom, hearing nothing from him, has an instinct that William is in danger and travels to London to find him. They go through some terrifying events until things are ultimately resolved for both Tom and William.

Without doubt this play will tug at the heart strings. Faithful to the original book, the play shows a remarkable depiction of the darkness of death, mental illness, and abuse. It is suitable for all ages, but it has some alarming scenes. Performances are at the Henfield Hall, on 17th and 18th October at 7.45pm, and 19th October at 1.30pm and 5.30pm. Tickets, priced at £13 for floor seating and £15 for raised seating per person, are on sale via www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com and at Stevens Estate Agents in Henfield High Street. This production is kindly sponsored by Coles Automotive.

Different energy levels and performance

How using different energy colours can positively impact your team, culture, and business performance.

The type of energy your people bring to the workplace can be closely tied to the overall energy of your organisation and its performance. Your people will have different energy styles, and it is essential as a manager to understand this to further adapt your overall business performance, as well as retain your people. Learning how to adapt your conversations to accommodate an employee’s preferences while holding a meaningful conversation, can be key to building a team that thrives and fosters trust between colleagues and mangers.

Are you confident how you need to communicate the plans and the objectives with your managers team and people in a way that will motivate them and get them engaged?

Consider this question. Which of your managers will:

• Want more time to consider and process the information you’ve given them, need more meticulous written details of the process, and any relating documents?

• Be excited to discuss the ideas within the meeting and be more motivated through verbal discussions that allow them to visualise how their own personal contribution enhances the new process?

Cool Blue Need:

• Facts, details, structure and process

• Send a meeting invite and agenda in advance

• Send any documents you want to discuss during the meeting in advance, so that the employee has time to review and process the information

• Follow up with meeting notes, and any relevant follow up/review dates

• Follow up with written details of any objectives that were set in the meeting

Fiery Red Need:

• Quick, precise details and expectations

• Keep the meeting short, precise and to the point

• Clearly set out exactly what it is that you expect or want from them, and by when

• If you need to follow up in writing, keep it to bullet points

• Don't provide any information or documentation that isn’t relevant at that specific time

• Be more motivated if you go into the conversation with an idea of who they can lean on for support if they need it and may need reassurance?

• Want a brief meeting that quickly explains the new process and exactly what is needed from them, by when?

Moore Kingston Smith HR Consultancy can help, introducing Insights Discovery and the four different colour energies. Insights Discovery workshops are key for leaders and managers to really understand their people. Knowing how to motivate them and communicating with them will get the best performance results. How to support your people knowing their preferred working and learning style will set your business up for success.

Effective communication generates 4.5 times higher talent retention. (Bit 2021)

97% of workers believe that communication impacts tasks every day. (Expert Market 2021)

86% of employees and executives cite lack of collaboration or ineffective communication for workplace failures. (Sales Force 2017).

Why should I know what colour preferences my people have?

Understanding more about how to effectively communicate and drive the different colour energies is vital for leaders to boost team performance and unlock their full potential.

Earth Green Need:

• Support, reassurance of fairness, teamwork

• Set the meeting up in a supportive manner

• Focus on the positives and how the topics can positively impact the team /entire workforce rather than just the individual

• If the meeting topic involves change, ensure they are made aware it is a fair and consistent change

• Try to incorporate teamwork and collaboration into plans/objectives

Sunshine Yellow Need:

• Appreciation, to be heard and involved, collaboration

• Provide recognition in the form of appreciation and acknowledgement

• Let the employee know that this is a platform for them to give their feedback and be listened to

• Explain their targets and objectives enthusiastically and show them encouragement

• Add conversations about team-based socialising or collaboration work

A high performing team is where each individual feels valued and performs to their highest potential. When looking at your recruitment strategy, you must consider structuring your teams to include all four colour preferences to create a more balanced approach towards decision making and therefore a more supportive environment.

Success depends on each person understanding their role and delivering the best possible experience. This depends on them understanding the new process, what the expectations are, how they should be communicating this and changes along with timescales and outcomes.

Learning how to adapt your conversations to accommodate an employee’s preferences, while holding a meaningful conversation, can be key to building a team that thrives and fosters trust between colleagues and managers.

Our workshops are designed to get your people to think about not only their own colour preferences, but also educate and support them in how to identify it in others. This in turn will help them adapt their communication style appropriately, creating a more considerate, understanding, and harmonious work environment.
