Kathryn has been working in horticulture since the age of 16 and has decades of experience in how to get the most out of your garden this month!

• Prune spring flowering shrubs and climber such as forsythia and clematis

• Manually remove weeds from flower beds and around the base of trees

• Continue mowing the lawn, but remember to raise the blades if it is very dry. If it isn’t too dry, you may want to give the lawn a feed, but it may need watering in.

• Dead head roses when the first blooms have finished to encourage repeat flowering. It is also time to feed them, check for pests and diseases such as aphids and treat these if necessary.

• Cover soil at base of dahlias with bark or compost to lock in moisture and protect against weed growth.

• Sow wallflowers and sweet williams outdoors in beds.

• Liquid feed containers and hanging baskets weekly.

• Plant out broccoli, cabbages, sprouts and leeks and sow spinach and salad crops regularly. Tie tomatoes into supports and feed weekly with tomato feed.

• Protect strawberries from birds with netting as they will be ready to pick this month!

SPRAY FOAM REMOVAL

Homeowners may need to remove spray foam insulation for several reasons. A primary concern is condensation buildup, which can lead to mould growth, weakened roof timbers and other structural elements. Improper installation can also reduce thermal efficiency, making removal necessary. Other common reasons include upgrading to a different insulation type, creating space for new installations, addressing pest infestations, or meeting mortgage lender requirements, as some lenders may decline mortgages due to spray foam insulation.

MOSS CLEANING & REMOVAL

Admiral’s team is fully trained, insured, and experienced in delivering top-quality roof cleaning services. We adhere to the highest industry standards and won’t leave your property until you’re completely satisfied with the results. Customer service is at the heart of everything we do, and we take pride in our strong track record of customer satisfaction.

Ofsted “good” for university degree apprenticeships

The University of Brighton has received a ‘Good’ overall effectiveness rating for its degree apprenticeships following an Ofsted inspection in February 2025. The university offers 15 degree apprenticeships including chartered surveying, civil engineering, town planning, occupational therapy, social work and teaching, and is planning to add more soon in response to increased demand from students.

Free books with Safe & Well visits

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has collaborated with the county council's Library Service to provide free books to residents receiving Safe and Well Visits. This initiative, aims to promote reading among those unable to visit libraries.

Rural Engagement Officer Ben Applin has been distributing copies of "A New Year" by Leia Aboulela, a Quick Reads title. These short books by bestselling authors are specifically designed for new or returning adult readers with an accessible writing style. The program complements the county's library outreach services, where volunteers deliver books, audiobooks, and other resources free of charge to residents facing mobility challenges, illness, disability, or caring responsibilities.

Safe and Well Visits offer crucial fire safety advice to vulnerable residents. These pre-arranged home visits help minimise risk through personalised guidance and free installation of smoke alarms or specialised fire detection equipment when needed. The service also helps reduce isolation for homebound individuals. For more information, visit www.westsussex.gov.uk.

New undercover mobility scooter parking

Have you ever thought what it would be like to sit on a mobility scooter which has been caught in a shower of rain. Not pleasant! Thanks to the generous owner of the area, Daphne Skilton; Southdown Engineers Ltd who painted the lines; and David Freeman of HMG Coatings (South) Ltd who donated the paint, there is now undercover parking for mobility scooters at the end of Caudle Street – outside Cornerweighs. Parking is at the owner’s risk. So do use the area when you need somewhere dry to park, for example, if you are going to Henfield Hall.

Charity & Community News

Council rejects Inspector's assessment of Local Plan Horsham District Council has been informed by the government-appointed planning Inspector, Mr Luke Fleming, that he won’t allow Horsham’s Local Plan to proceed and recommends withdrawal of the plan. This announcement from the Inspector comes after a considerable delay as Mr Fleming paused the hearings back in mid-December last year.

The Inspector’s view that Horsham should be seeking to provide significantly more houses, is in contrast to the views of many who objected to the plan, arguing that its housing numbers were too high.

Horsham District is an area of acute water stress and since 2021 delivery of new housing has been severely restricted by the legal requirement for all new developments to be ‘water neutral’ to prevent further damage to the internationally important Pulborough Brooks wildlife sites.

To help deliver water neutral development, Horsham has led on developing the innovative Sussex North Offsetting Water Strategy, known as the SNOWS scheme. This manages the water available for new plan-led developments through improved water efficiency and offsetting. This approach to Water Neutrality, has already been accepted by the Planning Inspectors for Chichester and Crawley’s Local Plans.

Despite this, Mr Fleming has written to the Council saying that he does not accept the Council’s strategy and considers we should have done even more to find

water solutions that would significantly increase the number of homes delivered in the District. Mr Fleming feels the Council should have done more to provide housing for Crawley’s unmet housing need under our legal ‘Duty to Cooperate’ obligation.

The Council strongly disagrees with the Inspector’s conclusions, as it has worked consistently and effectively with all organisations, including adjoining authorities, during preparation of its plan and particularly on the issue of water neutrality. The Council is astonished that the Inspector could reach such a conclusion without allowing neighbouring

authorities to speak at the examination hearings and questioning them directly as the Inspectors examining our neighbours’ plans have done. Instead, the Inspector focused his attention on the views of the development industry representatives that were present at the Hearing sessions.

In addition, the Council was advised by expert bodies that delivery of the kind of large-scale private water schemes that the Inspector referred to is extremely challenging and highly uncertain and so provides no guarantee to deliver the homes being promoted by the development industry, which is the key requirement of any local plan. Again, the Inspector did not invite the key organisations to his Hearing sessions to better understand these issues.

The Council has written a letter of complaint to the Planning Inspectorate.

Cllr Ruth Fletcher, Cabinet Member for Planning & Infrastructure, commented:

“This is a hugely disappointing decision. The plan has been prepared based on good evidence; the Council has taken expert advice including from the Planning Inspectorate, on its actions throughout the plan preparation process and no substantive concerns were raised at any point. We firmly believe we have acted in the best interests of the District and in the most professional way in trying to meet the Government’s housing targets.”

The ….. recommendation to withdraw the Local Plan will leave us fighting against uncontrolled speculative developments with one hand tied behind our backs."

The Leader of the Council, Cllr Martin Boffey, added:

“This Council has worked hard for years to produce an evidence-based plan that delivers housing, jobs and infrastructure investment, while protecting the environment. It is wrong for this to be halted by a flawed decision from a single individual.”

Council continues food hub support

A successful scheme that has prevented over 94 tonnes of food from going to waste since April 2023 will continue for another year, thanks to funding from West Sussex County Council.

Run in partnership with Sussex-based food rescue charity UKHarvest, the Community Food Hubs redistribute surplus food from suppliers while educating residents on food waste prevention.

The hubs take place once a month in each district and borough across West Sussex. For a small voluntary donation of £5, residents can access a wide selection of surplus food. No referrals are needed and all residents are welcome to visit the child-friendly hubs.

place in the Southeast Regional Final at Broadway Market in London in July.

Open to all young fledgling traders under the age of 30, Horsham’s competition winner for 2025 was Garden to Jar who make chutneys, jams and preserves (Sarah Griffin - pictured below). Those who were highly commended and will also go forward to the regional final were: Redamancy Art (Madison Varney), Simply Beads by Freya (Freya Herrett-Allen), Silver Hollow Jewellery (Daniel Scott), Mspwildlifeart (Megan Smylie-Page).

The competition was organised by local market operator Coden Events in association with the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) and the event was supported by Horsham District Council.

The Youth Ambassador Project will be led by the Breck a UK-wide charity established in 2014 in response to the death of 14-year-old Breck Bednar, who was groomed and murdered by someone he met online. The Foundation delivers life-saving, online harms awareness education to children across the UK.

For this pioneering project, the Breck Foundation will create cohorts of Ambassadors aged 13-18 who receive training to deliver high quality, peer-to-peer educational presentations on the signs of online grooming and exploitation using Breck’s story.

15 schools are taking part in the scheme across Sussex, primarily focusing on years 9 and 10. The project will also see an additional cohort of over-16’s at BHASVIC College acting as Senior Ambassadors. The aim of the project is to engage and empower young people to become inspirational speakers confident in the delivery of online safety to their peers, whilst highlighting the dangers of grooming, which has risen by 84% nationally in the last four years.

Charity Profile: Friends of the South Downs

The South Downs National Park is the newest area of land in the UK to be appointed a National Park and was given this status on March 31, 2010.

It stretches for 140 kilometres from Winchester to Eastbourne, across Hampshire, West Sussex, and East Sussex. With thousands of visitors every year taking to the South Downs trails to walk, cycle, ride horses, have picnics, or just simply take in the stunning views, visitors may not appreciate the work which goes on behind the scenes to keep these seemingly never-ending chalky trails protected and safe.

The threat of development

The Friends of the South Downs (FSD) is the only membershipbased charity with the protection of the South Downs at the heart of its work. In the aftermath of the First World War an outbreak of unregulated building development in the South Downs raised many concerns, both at a local and national level. This led to a handful of people who loved the countryside to set up a Society to address the problem. An initial meeting took place in Brighton Pavilion, and the name ‘Society of Sussex Downsmen’ was chosen –this was only changed to The Friends of the South Downs as late as 2018. Their goal was to preserve this stunning landscape, keeping it free from any future developments. Since World War Two, the Society has been continuously involved in commenting on building proposals and other developments such as pylons and major road schemes.

The charity’s work and goals

strolls which focus on visiting local places of interest are planned for the future, as well as marathon walks – these are for long-distance walkers who can join in for certain stages or take on the whole 26 miles.

Legacies & funding

Generous legacies have enabled the Society to provide financial support to projects it feels are worthwhile. Trees on the South Downs have been sadly decimated by Ash Dieback. Whilst grants are available to replant in open areas, nothing is available to fund replanting in the many villages in and around the park. The society, in conjunction with the South Downs National Park Trust, is funding replanting at several village locations.

The ‘Monday Group’ producing gates to replace stiles

Working alongside South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) they now focus on many projects, such as conservation; campaigning; climate change issue; planning; various educational activities; and guided walks. In addition to this, FSD also works with the South Downs Trust to help support their activities, to see more land managed for wildlife and more rare habitats protected.

The FSD currently organise over 200 walks each year, which are both interesting and suitable for varied levels of walking abilities. Themed

The FSD have paid for stiles to be replaced on many paths within the park, and for swing gates to be erected for the less agile of walkers to use on popular paths instead of trying to climb over stiles. A group of retirees near Ditchling called the ‘Monday Group’ specialise in producing gates to replace the stiles. One of the most popular stile-free route is now from Glynde to Lewes via Mount Caburn, providing much better access for the less able walker.

Sculptured rustic benches

Another project by the society to provide seats along the South Downs Way is progressing well, with wooden benches now located at Gander Down, Salt Hill, Harting Down, Tegleaze, Chanctonbury Saddlescombe, Ditchling Beacon, and Houghton. Benches are rustic in style and created by a chainsaw sculptor from locally sourced oak. Each bench is being carefully designed and sited to blend in with the

The society is also active with school communities to provide access to the park for young people who may not otherwise have easy access to the downs. Their funding of school visits and residential trips provides a foundation for young people to grow up with fond memories and experiences of the South Downs and grow a respect for the environment that will hopefully stay with them for years to come.

The team behind the scenes

A team of volunteers known as Area Access Officers regularly walk the paths and bridleways in the parishes they cover. They examine the condition of stiles and gates, looking out for obstructions and checking on the clarity and adequacy of waymarks. They do their best to ensure the paths and tracks are not obstructed or unsafe for the public to use.

Their campaigning work is undertaken by planning volunteers, known as District Officers, who are the Society’s Planning and Conservation Committee. They ensure that planning issues are responded to in a responsible and timely manner. The charity takes

Henfield Youth Club celebrating 20 years at Deer Park

It’s a very exciting time for us here at Henfield Youth Club, as we celebrate 20 years since the opening of our building at Deer park.

At that time, over two decades ago, we were in the old infant school in Neptown road, which was given to the youth of the village. The building was very run down and in a residential area so the need to move was very high. We sold that building and for some time we didn't have a home, so offered outreach work and trips out. We were then fortunate enough to be able to draw up our own plans for a new building and use the funds from the sale of our previous Youth Centre to make it a reality.

In March 2005 we moved into our new building but found ourselves out of funds, which was when West Sussex County Council, the Parish Council and many other local charities came to our rescue and helped us to purchase and fit the carpets.

We officially opened the building in June 2005 and two of our staff members, Rachael Martin (formerly Johnson) and Darren Farrell, who were former members themselves, had the honour of unveiling the plaque. And would you believe it, they’re still members of staff to this day!

Since that time WSCC withdrew their financial support in both staffing and in grants towards the upkeep of the building. We have managed to continue due to the dedication of the committee, staff and the belief and support from the village, as

well as a lot of hard work fundraising and applying for grants. However, it is no easy job and this is why we are always thankful for any help, support or funding that we receive.

Family Fun Day & Mega Raffle

In celebration of this milestone, The Youth Club will be hosting our 20th Anniversary Family Fun Day, and would like to invite the village, both old and new to celebrate with us on Saturday 12th July. It would be particularly lovely to see anyone who has been involved in the youth club in any way, whether you are or were a member, a committee member, a staff member, or have supported us in any way at all. Having had hundreds of members, parents, volunteers, committee members and staff pass through our doors over the years, it would be amazing to get as many back for our celebration as possible. So please do spread the word with your family and friends.

We’re hoping to make it a day to remember, working hard behind the scenes to deliver a day that people talk about for years to come. There will be something for everyone with bouncy castles, face painting, a tombola, as well as various refreshments and tasty food, including some sweet treats. We’ve got live music performances, a group workout session, fair ground style games and, to top it off, a fantastic raffle with some incredible prizes. We’ve been blown away by how many businesses and individuals have offered to support our raffle by donating such amazing

How to Know if You’re Losing Body Fat?

While it always feels motivating to see a few less pounds registering on the scales, it’s actually possible to lose the ‘wrong kind’ of weight when losing weight. You see, if we send signals to our body in the wrong way, we can instruct our body to pare down our muscle mass, which will result in weight loss. It might well look great on the scales, but the chances of maintaining this kind of weight loss for the long term are pretty slim because muscle is what keeps your metabolism firing and by reducing the amount of it we’re holding, our metabolism will slow – which means your body will need fewer calories to maintain it’s weight. This can lead to a ‘race to the bottom’ where you find yourself having to cut calories further and further in order to continue to see the scales shift.

The good news is that it is very possible to send signs to our body in the right way, in order to instruct our body to promise weight loss from body fat, while still maintaining our muscle mass. This approach is superior for many, many reasons – including the fact that you’re maintaining or even increasing your metabolism while still losing weight on the scales. So, how do you know if the weight you’re losing is fat?

Well, firstly, I think that choosing the right approach tells the tale ahead of time – but, if you’re looking for something more tangible, I think there are two key signs.

Beverley Pam Robinson

Strength

there’s a good chance that the weight loss you’re seeing is from fat. You’re unlikely to have lost muscle if you’re maintaining or increasing your strength.

Size: If you’re losing inches as well as weight on the scale, you’re likely losing body. fat. But, if you’re a few kilos down and there’s very little change in your waist measurement, then it’s more likely the weight loss you’re seeing is muscle.

Remember how important muscle is for overall health and that simply seeing a loss on the scales does not necessarily equate to improved health or being “less fat”. Heather Smith - www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

Cash Flow Modelling

Planning for the future is becoming increasingly complex due to evolving tax regulations, pension legislation and a myriad of savings and investment options. Cash flow modelling simplifies this complexity, transforming it into a visual representation of an individual’s lifetime financial journey.

Voyant – Cash flow modelling software

The cash flow model below illustrates a couple retiring at ages 60 and 58, transitioning from employment income to drawing funds from pensions and other investments. Their financial goals include maintaining an inflation-adjusted annual retirement income of £100,000, purchasing a holiday home in Spain for £300,000 a few years into retirement, and later gifting £200,000 to their son. The model indicates they may face an income gap at ages 87 and 85, which could require adjustments to their plans.

At Moore Kingston Smith, our financial advisers can provide expert guidance to help clients achieve their goals while maintaining long-term financial security.

Questions that lifetime cash flow modelling can answer include:

• Am I saving enough for my retirement? How much more should I save to hit my target?

• When can I afford to retire or to work parttime?

• What’s the income my investments can realistically generate throughout my retirement?

• What investment return do I need to never run out of money?

• Can I help my children to buy a house – will I need this money later? Would I be able to leave a legacy?

• If I die tomorrow, how will this affect my plan and my family?

• What’s the potential inheritance tax on death? What can I do now to minimise this?

• Do I need more life insurance? Do I need to downsize?

Building a financial plan using cash flow modelling is just the first step; the true value lies in continuously maintaining and adjusting it as needs evolve. We review our clients’ financial plans annually, unless a significant life event necessitates more immediate changes. For further assistance or detailed advice, please do not hesitate to contact Jonathan Aikens, on 020 4582 1881 or email: jaikens@mks.co.uk.
