Kathryn has been working in horticulture since the age of 16 and has decades of experience in how to get the most out of your garden this month!
• Dead head bedding plants to prolong their flowering season.
• Continue to feed containers and hanging baskets with liquid feed weekly.
• Pick courgettes when they are 4 inches/10cm long, unless you are a particular fan of marrows!
• Cut back lavender after flowering –if you like, you can save some to dry indoors to scent your home.
• Make a plan for your houseplants for when you are on holiday! If you don’t have a friendly neighbour volunteering to water them, you can arrange a moisture mat on your draining board with one end dangling into a sink full of water and place your plant pots onto the matting to gradually suck up the water.
Homeowners may need to remove spray foam insulation for several reasons. A primary concern is condensation buildup, which can lead to mould growth, weakened roof timbers and other structural elements. Improper installation can also reduce thermal efficiency, making removal necessary. Other common reasons include upgrading to a different insulation type, creating space for new installations, addressing pest infestations, or meeting mortgage lender requirements, as some lenders may decline mortgages due to spray foam insulation.
Admiral’s team is fully trained, insured, and experienced in delivering top-quality roof cleaning services. We adhere to the highest industry standards and won’t leave your property until you’re completely satisfied with the results. Customer service is at the heart of everything we do, and we take pride in our strong track record of customer satisfaction.

Toadally awesome! Natterjacks bounce back!
One of Britain’s rarest –and loudest – amphibians has made a remarkable comeback in the South Downs National Park thanks to concerted nature recovery efforts. Their distinctive rasping call can be heard up to a mile away, earning them the reputation as the UK’s loudest amphibian. A reintroduction programme started at nearby Blackmoor in 2021 and the latest survey has recorded breeding natterjacks, counting 28 toadlets.
Samaritans Awareness Day is held on 24 July each year (to reflect the fact that the charity's volunteers are available 24/7).

Henfield Community Fridge needs you!
Food waste is a big issue in the UK and most of this food waste is avoidable and could have been eaten had it been better managed. Community Fridges are a tried and tested way of stopping good food ending up in the bin and promoting a spirit of sharing and mutual support within a community.
The Henfield Community Fridge (HCF) is located at Henfield Leisure Centre and open 3 times a week. The fridges are available for anyone to use and over the last two years the organisation has saved over 15 tonnes of food from being wasted.
A team of friendly volunteers operate a rota (Monday, Thursday, Friday) to collect the food from local businesses and deliver to the fridge.
The fridge is open on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday when volunteers display the food and help the public. HCF is on the lookout for extra volunteers to assist the operation. No formal commitment is needed, just help when you are free. If you feel you would like to volunteer just put your name against a time slot (1 hour max) as often or as seldom as you can. Interested? Email us henfield@faredivide.org.uk

The café runs on the third Saturday of the month at The Haven from 10am – 12 noon. We have now been running there for two years and have taken in more than 800 repairs, successfully mending 75% of them. Our clever repairers can fix most things from radios, lamps, jewellery, clothes, bikes and bags and sometimes we are given bigger challenges!
For example, a garden bird ornament arrived in pieces and much to the delight of its owner was made good as new; and a broken garden pot was returned ready for use again.
So before you send your damaged goods to landfill think about bringing them to us, we might just surprise you making them almost “as good as new” again!
We also provide a sharpening service for £1 an item and have so far sharpened 900 knives, secateurs, scissors etc.
We do not charge for this but if you’d like to make a donation all the money goes to good causes. So do pay us a visit, you will be assured of a warm welcome, as well as a cuppa and homemade cake! And our friends from Henfield Shed will also be there to help you.
Our next Repair Cafe is on Saturday 19 July when we will also be running a bike maintenance workshop with MeloVelo.

Every year, the Summer Reading Challenge runs in libraries across the country to encourage primary school children to keep reading over the holidays.
We are excited to share that this year’s theme is Story Garden, inspiring a love of reading, nature and exploring the outdoors. It will be launching in all 36 libraries across West Sussex on Saturday 12th July and running until Saturday 13th September.
Children aged 4-11 will be asked to read books and complete reading challenges to collect stickers and will receive a special medal and certificate for completing their challenge. We also have the mini challenge for those aged under 4 years.
There’ll be lots of fun activities and events happening throughout the summer too, so look out for more information in libraries and on our website.
We are also looking for volunteers aged 14+ to help us deliver the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge in libraries. You will help families sign up to the challenge online, chat with children about the books they have read, hand out rewards and encourage children to keep reading.

A division of West Sussex Beekeepers Association. With around 500 members in West Sussex and 130 in Wisborough Green.
In the UK, honeybees play a vital role to both agriculture and the environment by providing essential pollination to crops and wild plants. Broccoli, carrots, fennel, parsnips, kale, apples, raspberries and tomatoes are some British crops that rely on pollination from bees. Estimates from the University of Reading suggest that it would cost UK farmers an enormous £1.8 billion a year to manually pollinate their crops. In addition, honeybees also produce honey and beeswax. There are more than 250 species of bees in the UK. Only one species of honeybee, the European honeybee, lives in the UK. These are farmed bees that have been introduced by beekeepers rather than being native. Bumblebees nest in colonies while other bees are solitary, such as mason and mining bees. Unfortunately, it is now incredibly rare to find a true wild honeybee colony.
From A-list to Bee-list
space inside the hive to control the number of bees and capacity for honey storage. When there is surplus, some honey can be harvested.
Additionally, when facing adverse conditions like very wet or dry seasons, bees may need extra feeding to ensure survival. As extreme weather events, including changes to the duration and intensity of seasons, are becoming more common due to climate change, bees may need more help than in the past.
Beekeeping has risen in popularity with celebrities taking up the hobby. Whether you’ve seen David Beckham donning his beekeeper’s suit, Jeremy Clarkson selling his ‘bee juice’ (honey) at Diddly Squat Farm shop or even Queen Camilla in her role as first appointed President of Bees for Development, the popularity of beekeeping appears to be on the rise. So, what’s all the buzz about?
Beekeeping is a hobby and passion that appeals to different people for many different reasons. For some, it’s a wish to help and support pollinator populations, a fascination with bees’ life-cycle and their role in an ancient countryside tradition, the ability to get involved in a social group with like-minded folk or simply a love of producing and using ‘real’ honey. The result is a vastly different product from mass-produced supermarket honey. Additionally, beekeeping is an inexpensive hobby, especially if the odd jar of honey is sold at work or from the door! After initial start-up expenses it was estimated that annual costs come to around £120 per hive (information from 2024), although naturally this can vary greatly.
The modern beekeeper
While honeybees are generally considered to be selfsufficient, a beekeeper can help by gently managing
The modern beekeeper must be able to recognise diseases and viruses and how to manage these to protect a healthy hive. Buying a colony of bees and keeping them in a hive is an unnatural state. Not having the skills to care for the hive, including disease recognition, could mean that the hive will die or at worst, serve as a point source for disease spread since bees will drift between colonies.
WGBKA – Busy as a Bee
WGBKA is most active during the summer months from March to September. This is when bees are busy collecting nectar and pollen from gardens and wildflowers to bring back to the colony to feed young bees and enable the colony to reproduce and divide. This is known as the swarming process.
Beekeeping is a hobby that keeps you fit! There is a lot of bending, stretching, walking and weightlifting involved in the summer season.
With beekeeping, there is always more to learn. The Wisborough Green beekeeping group meets every 10 days during the summer to learn together under the guidance of an experienced beekeeper.
During the quieter winter months, the members of WGBKA take advantage of the extra time. Lectures on recent research or discussion groups keep members up to date on the latest knowledge and developments. Some members of the association take their skills in a different direction; processing bees’ wax and other hive products to produce candles, polish or cosmetics, all of which are in increasing demand. These are handmade with traditional ingredients.
There is also a good social side to beekeeping. The association keeps active with regular meetings (tea and cake to follow!) shows, competitions or lectures
and learning days. There is also an annual celebratory end-of-season supper to be enjoyed!
Beekeeping in Sussex
The importance of pollinators in general, and the difficulties faced by these - including bees - has been well publicised in recent years, and knowledgeable beekeeping can play a role in helping pollinator survival as well as providing the opportunity for continual learning in one of several fascinating hobbies.
There are several beekeeping groups across Sussex, and each has a website which will give information to anyone interested. Some give an introductory day of lectures for those thinking of taking up the hobby or will give a ‘have a go’ beekeeping session for handling bees under close supervision. WGBKA offer practical sessions at the apiary before a course, so
potential beekeepers learn at the hive before the theory. Details for new members are available on their websitewww.wgbka.org.uk
To bee or not to bee?
The result of poorly researched and written articles that suggest bees are in trouble or decline is creating a nationwide problem. This is a very complex issue, as some bees are doing very well. It is true that annual honeybee losses are greater than they were, with reasons that may include pesticides, pathogens, unsuitability of imports to our conditions and simply bad or inexperienced beekeeping.
The publicity has led to these messages often being enthusiastically promoted for political or commercial gain.
Unfortunately, it has led to some people buying a colony of bees, but without the learning or experience to manage them in a caring way, in the mistaken view
they are “saving the bees”, or to practice “let-alone beekeeping” intended to mimic the natural state. There are over 250 species of bees in the UK, of which honeybees, those that beekeepers keep, are only one species. If considering buying bees for this purpose, please consider the above very carefully.
To learn more, explore the Wisborough Green Beekeepers Association website, including details about upcoming events and how to complete an introduction to beekeeping day.

There is much more than birdlife here says Alice Macdougall of RSPB Pagham.
Sensing the natural world around us can have such a profound impact on our state of mind. The wonderful thing is, you don’t need to do much to reap the rewards. You could just close your eyes and feel the sun, wind or rain on your skin; listen to the call or the curlew, the squawk of a gull or the squabble of rooks; hear the wind blowing through the trees or the buzz of hungry insects. You could observe the many colours, shapes and patterns – notice the fractals, the clouds or the ripples in the water.
Teeming with life
Pagham Harbour is teeming with life, but it’s not just the birds that make it interesting. July is a great month to watch dragonflies and damselflies as they zip around the Discovery Pond. These infinitely beautiful
insects with their long delicate wings and intricate colourful patterns date back 300 million years, pre-dating dinosaurs. Fossils show that, back then, they had wingspans of up to 60cms. While they might be a little smaller nowadays, they have had incredible evolutionary success which is largely attributed to their hunting superpowers.
Agile fliers - and fearsome predators
Dragonflies are impressively agile fliers, assisted by their four wings which they can use independently – up and down and rotating. This means they can dart in all directions and are, in fact, one of the fastest insects in the UK (the Hawker dragonfly holds the speed record at almost 30 miles per hour!). This makes them fearsome predators with exemplary skills in capturing the gnats, mosquitoes and other bugs they feed upon mid-air, then seizing them with their strong jaws and teeth. Having huge eyes with almost 360 vision means they can see any tiny movements around them – their 75% hunting success rate is pretty high!
It’s a long larva life
By the time you see a dragonfly, they have already spent two months to three years underwater in their larvae stage. Some dragonflies will only live for a week, some up to about two/three months – so enjoy them while you can.
Species to look out for are the Emperor – a beautiful sky blue (male) or green (female) both with a darker line down the middle; the Ruddy Darter – blood red (male) and yellow ochre (female); the Broad Bodied Chaser –blue with yellow spots (male) or golden brown with paler spots (female).
Slim, blue Damselflies
Damselflies are similar to Dragonflies but are longer and slimmer, holding their wings alongside their bodies when they rest (while the dragonfly holds its wings away from the body). Look out for that flash of blue over the pond - the azure, common blue and bluetailed damselflies.
Plenty for children in the summer holidays
At Pagham Harbour, we have arrange of events on over the summer holidays where you can find out about dragonflies and damselflies, butterflies and moths, amphibians and reptiles and of course our many mud loving birds. You can go pond dipping, bug hunting and bee-home making – or you can just go for a walk and enjoy the bright blue of Vipers Bugloss, the magenta Hedge Woundwort, and the yellows of Buttercups. Of course, we’re usually seeking a specific outcome from the effort we put in to our health and fitness, but ultimately we cannot absolutely control what the exact outcome will be.
So, rather than opening yourself up to disappointment and subsequently falling into an on: off cycle with diet and exercise, try to focus on your actions rather than the outcomes.
We know that by getting fitter, improving our mobility and eating more healthily, we’re going to head in the right direction – in fact, I’d argue that it would be impossible not to gain positive benefits from this! But, we cannot control the exacts, or the speed that things happen – and sometimes it can be really quite demotivating if your results don’t live up to your expectations.
If this feels like you, my advice in this situation is to focus on the things that you do know exactly; and what you do know exactly is what action you are taking. Control what you can to maintain motivation, which leads to consistency.
This might be that you know what you’re eating for each meal, whether you’ve been to the shops to get the ingredients you need, what days you’re going to exercise this week, what time you’re getting to bed, how much water you’re drinking….
You can’t control exactly how your body is going to respond, or how quickly – but you do know that you’re heading in the right direction (especially if you also keep an eye on clues like your energy levels, your physical and mental performance and your sleep quality).
Having this sense of control and success is encouraging. And when we feel this positivity around what we’re doing, we’re much more likely to stay consistent with our routines – which hugely increases our chances at reaching our overall goals!

Those who joined the workforce before the millennial generation may remember a time when employees received modest annual pay rises, the occasional Christmas bonus, and recognition for long service. Today, such practices are outdated, yet many business owners still hesitate to introduce commission structures, fearing they may reduce profits.
In truth, well-designed commission and bonus schemes help build a high performance culture. They motivate, challenge and reward employees, encourage healthy competition and support team cohesion. These schemes can also help manage salary costs, retain high performers and highlight underperformance. When implemented effectively, they improve both productivity and morale.
Many successful reward programmes are built around Management by Objectives (MBO).
This approach sets clear milestones with agreed timescales and regular reviews. Objectives should follow SMART principles: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound. Schemes should be flexible, allowing updates to targets and higher rewards for those who exceed expectations.
MBO is highly effective for sales and business development roles – often referred to as ‘hunters’ – but can also be adapted for ‘farmers’ in account management or customer service, who manage long-term client relationships.
Small and medium-sized businesses must recognise that no incentive scheme is universal. A tailored approach is essential to drive performance and avoid common errors.
Key guidance includes:
• Do not tie commission to base salary. Salaries pay for regular duties; bonuses should reward exceptional performance.
• Be cautious with welcome bonuses. They can attract key talent but are risky without
performance conditions. Tie them to early achievements.
• Avoid attendance bonuses. Once missed, motivation drops. The same applies to general penalties for lateness or errors.
• Ensure schemes comply with employment law. Bonuses must not disadvantage employees for taking leave.
• Review outdated rewards. Christmas bonuses and long service awards offer goodwill but often lack impact. Replace them with targeted, performance-based incentives.
• Incentivise easy wins, but scale rewards for more complex or high-value outcomes.
• Use stretch targets. Offering greater rewards for exceeding expectations can boost results significantly.
• Link payments to paid client invoices to ensure your sales team focuses on collecting revenue, not just closing deals.
• Consider end-of-contract bonuses. These help retain staff through to project completion and can be cost neutral if planned carefully.
Bonuses and commissions are not giveaways. They are strategic tools that drive performance, build loyalty and support sustained business growth.
