Prestigious accolade marks milestone for South Downs establishment
TERRA Restaurant has been awarded its first AA Rosette following an inspection by a nationally recognised AA Inspector recently. The prestigious accolade comes as a significant milestone for the South Downs establishment.
Team Leadership Celebrates Achievement
Helen Pomery, Director of TERRA Restaurant, expressed her pride in the team's achievement. "This recognition is the result of four years of really pushing our team to be the best they can be and receiving this long awaited accolade is the biggest reward for them. Ultimately our guest feedback drives us forward every day and helps push us even further in our mission to receive our next Rosette, our journey has only just begun," she said.
Plethora of award nominations & achievements
Executive Head Chef Chris Hilton shared similar sentiments, saying, "I'm over the moon and so proud to have been part of the journey that Tottington Manor and TERRA Restaurant has been on so far and I continue to be very excited about what the future holds, there is more to come."
Sustainability Recognition
The AA Rosette announcement arrived just a week before another significant honour for the restaurant. Restaurants Brighton, organisers of the highly regarded local hospitality equivalent of the Oscars, awarded TERRA its first BRAVO Award for Most Sustainable Restaurant. Despite facing strong competition, the restaurant's commitment to sustainable hospitality has been a primary focus since its inception.
Commitment to local sourcing & sustainability
The establishment has prioritised eliminating fossil fuels, reducing waste, and sourcing locally, with 90% of their food menu featuring Sussex ingredients and 25% of their drinks and wine list showcasing local offerings. This approach not only supports the local economy but, as Helen says, “it feels like the right thing to do”.
Building on their achievements, TERRA was nominated in five BRAVO categories in 2025: Best Sussex Restaurant, Best Team, Best Wine List, Best Sunday Roast, and Most Sustainable. The restaurant secured Top 10 positions in four categories and placed in the Top 20 for all five nominations out of thousands of contenders. Their most notable achievements included winning Most Sustainable Restaurant and placing second for Best Sussex Restaurant.
About TERRA restaurant

At the Hall we’re looking forward to the warmer weather, both the caretakers are already working on the garden. We are lucky enough to have received a very kind donation from the Kindersley Trust in the form of three rather smart garden benches. We are so grateful for this donation, and I am sure they will prove to be a welcome addition to our Hall users during what we hope will be a glorious summer. The Henfield Hal Garden will be open on 7 June as part of the Henfield Festival of Gardens & Arts, with music, art and Pimm’s. Please come along and see us.
Perhaps you are planning a summer party, why not have a look at the lovely Garden Room, you can relax and enjoy your special occasion. We can recommend local caterers, arrange for the bar to be open (conditions apply) and for a small fee we can clear up afterwards! Contact us and arrange a viewing or have a look online where you can instantly see what dates are available and make a booking.
May will bring our fabulous V.E. Day event with Three Penny Piece and Jiving Jim Dandy on 3rd May. Further ahead watch out for our fabulous July 4th event, yes, we know it’s an American celebration, but we have a super entertainer lined up and a chance to dance the night away! At the Hall we love any excuse to have a get together with our fabulous Henfield residents!
Caroline Allan – Hall Administrator

Anne Pryor
At BN5 we were sad to hear that Anne Pryor lost her battle with cancer on Sunday 30th March. Anne was diagnosed more than five years ago and her determination to remain fit and well to enjoy life with her children and grandchildren won admiration from many in the village. She was an active member of several Henfield organisations, including Henfield Youth Club, Henfield Lions, Henfield Foodbank and HART, where she gave many hours to the village as a First Responder. Anne was a class teacher at St Peter’s in Cowfold for 17 years, teaching hundreds of young children.
Henfield will once again be welcoming the Gardens and Arts Festival on the weekend of the 7th and 8th June. This year, around thirty gardens will be opening on one or both days. Several of the gardens will also be hosting artists, craftspeople and musicians, celebrating the creativity that abounds in and around the village.
Entry to the gardens is free, but please have some cash handy. Some of the garden owners will be selling refreshments and plants and collecting optional donations for their favourite charities.
It is poignant that Anne passed away on Mothering Sunday, as her children and grandchildren were the very centre of her life, as was her husband David. Our thoughts are with them all as they navigate life without Anne, who we remember fondly and with enormous admiration.
Rather than flowers, Anne’s family have requested donations to Breast Cancer Now, the research and support charity, in her memory.
Emma Cole
We had such a lovely afternoon on the 16th March at our Thank You Tea at the Youth Club. Our members
entertained our visitors with music by our resident band and two solos by Lilly-Mae. Other members were busy serving our guests tea, coffee and cake and helping us to clear everything away after.
We were so proud of them all and loved having the opportunity to say a huge thank you to all the fantastic people in our community that support us in so many ways.
Debbie Slaughter
A free Festival booklet containing all the information you need can be picked up from various outlets around the village. The booklet includes a map showing the location of the gardens, and details of which gardens are wheelchair accessible and dog friendly. The booklet can also be downloaded from the Festival website www.henfieldgardensandarts.net
The Gardens and Arts Festival is one of the annual highlights in our community. All we need now is some sunny weather to complete the perfect weekend in Henfield!
Henfield’s VE Day Celebrations There will be an event to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day on Thursday 8th May, everyone in the village is welcome to come and join in.
The Beacon at the Rothery Field will be lit at 9.30pm on Thursday 8th May, and the BP Guild will be running a bar from 7pm. The Beacon Lighting will be replicated across the country.

One hundred ‘Homes for Nature’ have been created at railway stations across the vast Southern, Thameslink and Great Northern network to increase biodiversity and protect the one in six species now under threat of extinction in the UK. Southern’s parent company Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) and the Bee Friendly Trust last week put the finishing touches to habitats at Sussex stations Glynde, Plumpton and Berwick. May Day marks the beginning of summer, and Morris Dancing is a traditional way to celebrate the arrival of spring and the renewal of nature. May Day is the 1st of May regardless of the date of the Bank Holiday Monday, and with many Morris events take place on or around May Day it’s the perfect time to celebrate the new season. It's often seen as a way to "banish the dark of winter" and welcome the lighter, warmer months. After a long and very grey winter, it seems we can all benefit from this ancient tradition!
The dances themselves can involve rhythmic stepping, the use of sticks, swords, and handkerchiefs, and the wearing of bells; and the sounds of the bells were believed by some to help bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. In essence, Morris dancing on May Day is a vibrant and historical tradition that celebrates the arrival of spring and the renewal of life.
Many people from the villages around Chanctonbury Ring at Wiston will know there has been Morris Dancing at the ’Ring’ for many years, by your local ‘Chancs’ Morris. You’ve probably heard news of the event but never actually visited to watch, or you may not realise that spectators are very warmly welcomed.
So who or what is 'Chancs'? It’s short for Chanctonbury Ring Morris (Men) - a Cotswold Morris ‘side’ who dance with traditional handkerchiefs and sticks. We’re based in central Sussex, and celebrated our 70th Anniversary in 2023. As a member of the men only Morris Ring in 1953, when that national organisation changed policy in 2023, it allowed Chancs to accept anyone, so Chancs dropped ‘Men’ from its name,
and now welcomes all adults to the side. Our dances are traditional from the Cotswold area, and we even have a ‘Mummers’ team at Christmas, who are heartily welcomed at many pubs and venues around the area.
So, set your alarm clocks to be up with the sparrows – we start dancing at 7am at Chanctonbury Ring. It’s a wonderful experience which you won’t regret, and part of our Sussex heritage. We’ll dance and sing, go to the Frankland Arms for a hearty breakfast and then go on to dance in Shoreham. If a dawn rise isn’t for you don’t worry, we’ll be dancing out at pubs and public events through the summer, so visit the website to find out when we’ll be and come and have a chat.
Although Chancs is well-established, we are looking for new apprentices to join us; and we also welcome experienced Morris Dancers and musicians who’ve moved to our area, or who want to join us from other sides. If you are interested in giving Morris dancing a try, you can come along to any practice session in the winter, no strings (or bells) attached, although it’s best to check with the Bagman in advance via our website or bagman@crmm.org.uk
We practise 8-10pm on Wednesdays in the winter from October to April, usually followed by a couple of pints at the local pub. To see our winter practise location or to find out more about us, visit www.crmm.org.uk

Many of my clients now directly employ carers for their or their loved one’s care as it’s preferable to, say, relying on the local authority or an agency. They say they like being able to control how long visits last, that it’s usually cheaper than going through an agency and it provides consistency for the person being cared for. These agreements are usually informal, often cash in hand.
However, you must think very carefully about direct employment. For instance, have you considered:-
• if you are compliant with the Mental Capacity Act 2005, when arranging care as an attorney?
• that you should have a formal employment contract? Or that your carer may have employment rights, regardless of whether they are called ‘self-employed’ or not?
• that you ought to carry out background checks via the Disclosure and Barring Service and obtain references? The person needing care may well be ‘at risk’ so trust in the carer in essential.
• that you will have to register with HMRC as an employer, operate PAYE and pay National Insurance & statutory sick pay (SSP) AND make pension contributions?
• the need for employer’s liability carer insurance, and that your buildings insurer may not consent to your being an employer from home?
• that you will need a compliant and workable Care Plan, including risk assessments, and a means of monitoring/spot checking the care accordingly?
• that you must understand carers’ training requirements, e.g. moving and handling techniques & safeguarding?
• that you should ensure the carer has their own insurance cover to an appropriate level?
I am not necessarily suggesting that clients do not directly employ carers. However, as the above points demonstrate, these are not just informal arrangements. They have far reaching consequences for all parties. Clients can be caught out under employment, taxation and health and safety laws and even commit criminal offences, simply due to their being ignorant of their duties.
Consider if it’s a false economy to pay less by organising things yourself. Good care providers put a huge amount of work into providing safe and appropriate care with high service levels, and you get what you pay for.
If you need assistance in understanding the options and your duties, please get in touch on 01273 284012 or richard.bates@cognitivelaw.co.uk. You can find out more about me at www.cognitivelaw.co.uk.

Across the UK, baby banks are stepping up to ensure that every child has the essentials they need to flourish, regardless of their family's circumstances. Ten Little Toes Baby Bank in West Sussex is a shining example of care and dedication, making a real difference for families in our community. With love and a strong sense of community spirit at our core, we are here to support families who may be facing financial challenges by providing essential items for their little ones.
At the heart of Ten Little Toes Baby Bank lies a warm and heartfelt mission: to collect and share baby essentials with families in need— completely free of charge. From cosy clothes and sturdy prams to soft nappies and wet wipes, we offer a treasure trove of resources designed to lighten the load for parents during challenging times. More than just providing items, Ten Little Toes is all about building connections and nurturing a supportive community. Founded in Cowfold by the caring JoJo in 2017, Ten Little Toes blossomed from a simple but vital understanding: many families were going through tough times without access to necessities. Thanks to an outpouring of local support, volunteer efforts, and generous donations, our baby bank has become a reassuring presence in the community.
The impact of Ten Little Toes Baby Bank is felt far and wide. In the past year, we have had the joy of assisting over 1,500 families, each care package thoughtfully tailored to meet their unique needs. From snug blankets for newborns to warm shoes and coats for preteens, every item is chosen with love and consideration for those we serve. We understand that parenting can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially in tough times. A gift of a pram can help a new mum venture out and connect with friends; a cot with a new mattress ensures a safe sleep space, offering both comfort and peace of mind to a parent. If you know a family who could use a little love, we work on a referral basis, so please check our website for details on how to get a referral, www.tenlittletoesbabybank.org.
We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our wonderful community. By encouraging donations of gently used items, we promote a circular economy. Families can declutter their homes while ensuring that baby clothes and equipment find loving new homes with those who need them most. This cycle of giving is not just kind to our planet; it helps instil meaningful values of community spirit and generosity in our children. To donate, please visit our Facebook page for the items we are currently accepting. You can find us at www.facebook.co.uk/tenlittletoesbabybank.
The beating heart of Ten Little Toes Baby Bank is our amazing team of volunteers. These dedicated individuals work tirelessly to sort donations, assemble bundles and connect with families in need. Volunteering at Ten Little Toes is a fulfilling experience, It’s a wonderful chance to meet others, learn about community needs, and make a positive difference together. If you’re interested in joining our volunteers, please email thehub@tenlittletoesbabybank.org.
As Ten Little Toes Baby Bank continues to grow, we’re eager to expand our reach to even more families. We care about those living in hidden poverty or suffering in silence, and we are exploring plans for the future that will help us connect with these individuals and families even more effectively. Ten Little Toes aims to extend our network of support, ensuring that every baby has access to what they need for a healthy start in life
By offering crucial support, nurturing friendships, and advocating for children from all walks of life, Ten Little Toes embodies the spirit of compassion in action. Every child deserves a strong start, and every parent deserves the caring hand of support from their community. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, we can all play a part in this mission.

Small local business based in Henfield, with over 18 years’ experience.
Despite increasing pressure on the public finances, the Chancellor has largely stuck to her promise that there would only be one major fiscal event each year. However, The Spring Statement did bring several important updates that business owners need to be aware of. Despite the challenging economic climate, the government remains committed to supporting growth and maintaining fiscal discipline. Here are the key points that business owners should consider:
One of the significant announcements is the continuation of the planned changes to employers' National Insurance Contributions (NICs). These changes, set to take effect from 6 April 2025, will impact many businesses. It is crucial for business owners to review their payroll systems and budget for the increased NICs to ensure compliance and avoid any penalties.
The government has announced an additional £13 billion investment in capital infrastructure projects over the next five years. This includes a construction skills package aimed at training an additional 60,000 skilled workers. Businesses in the construction and real estate sectors should prepare to leverage these opportunities, which could lead to increased demand for their services and potential growth.
An additional £2 billion investment in social and affordable housing has been announced. This is a positive development for businesses involved in the housing sector, as it promises more projects and opportunities. Housebuilders should stay informed about these investments and consider how they can participate in upcoming projects.
The Spring Statement also highlighted the government's commitment to transforming HMRC into a 'digital first' organisation. This transformation will change how taxpayers interact with the government, making it essential for businesses to stay updated on these changes. Adopting digital tools and ensuring that their systems are compatible with HMRC's new processes will be crucial for smooth operations.
Despite lobbying from various groups, the changes to business and agricultural property reliefs from inheritance tax will proceed as planned. Business owners should plan accordingly and seek professional advice to understand the implications of these changes on their estate planning and succession strategies.
The Spring Statement 2025 brings several updates that business owners need to consider. From changes in NICs to significant investments in infrastructure and housing, these developments present both challenges and opportunities. Staying informed and proactive in adapting to these changes will be key to navigating the evolving business landscape.
