Editor’s Letter

This coming weekend (2 September) sees the start of a big fundraiser for Henfield Leisure Centre. A team of 14 cyclists will be pedalling the entirety of the South Downs Way, while a back-toback Spinathon takes place at the Leisure Centre. It’s not too late to take part in a class yourself, please take a look on page 26 for details of how to get involved.

We are so pleased to hear that after a long hunt, the Henfield Shedders have found a new home! They’re not packing boxes quite yet though, because it’s in the old Tanyard building, which will need a considerable amount of work to bring it up to scratch. Find out more on page 36.

Mike Morgan, who represented Henfield as an Independent at Horsham District Council until May this year, has been a great contributor to the village during his time at Horsham and his thirtysix years as a Parish Councillor. Read about what he’s done for Henfield on page 41.

At the time of going to print the weather is pretty unseasonable, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed for an Indian summer this September, whatever the weather we hope you have a good month!

Happy Days to Come

The Steyning and District Food and Drink Festival Committee have put together another great itinerary of offers and events, which will open at the Farmers Market on 2 September and close at the Farmers Market on 7 October.

Over the Festival period over 60 local offers will be available - look out for them within the Festival guide (available in lots of local shops and eateries), or visit www. steyningdistrictfooddrinkfestival.co.uk and make a note of your favourites.

But let’s not forget the fabulous events as well! You will have difficulty in choosing as in fact there are around 50 including workshops / masterclasses in artisan bakery and chocolate; floral artistry days; guided walks and tours; wine tastings and food to accompany; pub quiz nights; Mad Hatters children’s tea party; Cobblestone Fete; Beer Festival and a wonderful Celebrity Dinner - and lots more! Some events need the purchase of tickets in advance, so get these booked up now to avoid disappointment.

We will be raising as much money as possible for our selected charity which this year is the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. With your help and support we hope to collect a lot of money for this very special organisation.

Our very sincere thanks go to our sponsors,

Horsham District Foodbank to run a Silent Auction

Horsham Matters, which runs the Horsham District Foodbank, is hosting its first Silent Auction on Tuesday 17 October at the Capitol Theatre in Horsham. Funds raised will help support the work the charity does in the community, as it has seen a huge increase in demand for its service as the cost-of-living crisis affects residents from all walks of life.

The free event will showcase several auction items including art, experiences and much more. All monies raised will help fund the work the charity does in the local community, including the foodbank, energy provision and essential household items.

The charity provided 9,069 emergency food parcels to people facing hardship across Horsham District during 2022, with 3,670 of these going to children. It is currently providing 700-800 individual food parcels per month, and it does not expect these numbers to decrease any time soon.

For more info on the Silent Auction, please visit their fundraising event page on www.horshammatters.org.uk or email info@horsham-matters. org.uk.

every parent has the best possible care. My girls were born five weeks early, weighing only 3lbs and 4lbs. Fortunately, they received excellent medical care, and after two months, we were able to leave hospital. Now they are that bit older I want to give something back and I’m seeking your sponsorship and support to raise funds for Tommy’s.

I‘m aiming to raise £2,500. To give an idea of the impact this will have, £1,00 could fund a scientist at one of our research centres for a day, £1,000 could help support Tommy’s Net for 6 months— an essential database gathering clinical trial results, and £3,000 could cover 12 consultation sessions at their Stillbirth Research Centre in Manchester.

If you’d like to contribute, please visit www. justgiving.com/nickot - your donation, no matter how small will make a huge difference. Thank you for joining me on this incredible journey! Best regards,

Vocal Fusion Acapella 2023

Your local group of male singers Vocal Fusion Acapella (VFA) with their director Zoe Peate have been busy in the last year and we wanted to share our news with you. Two new members joined us after a free ‘Learn to Sing’ course in 2022 and are now happily part of the VFA family. Our repertoire is now expanding from barbershop, popular song and musicals to sea shanties and folksongs – there are so many wonderful

arrangements to choose from and they are great source of inspiration not just musically but also for working and crafting the voice. Our most recent songs have been The Drunken Sailor (arr. Parker/Shaw) and a beautiful setting of the poem ‘She moved through the fair’ by Timothy Takach. We have also learnt The Wellerman and are beginning a setting of the well-known Shenandoah (arr. K Schraeder). Over the last few months we’ve also added a couple of Disney songs starting with ‘The Bare Necessities’ and ‘You’re Welcome’ from Moana and will add to these during 2023.

Being an acapella group the discipline to learn is high but the rewards are fantastic and we would love to see more of you men singing and enjoying the camaraderie of this wonderful hobby - basses especially! Come and sit in on any of our Wednesday evening rehearsals at Dial Post Village Hall RH13 8NH from 7.15pm or hear us at our next concert on Saturday 7 October at St Peter’s in Henfield. New exhibition at the Canal Centre in Loxwood

This summer the Wey & Arun Canal Trust have put together a selection of drawings and paintings by well-known canal artist John RussellHayes. During his lifetime, John was frequently seen along the canal producing his distinctive before-and-after restoration pictures that tell the story of bringing the canal back to life. A selection is now on view and sale at the Loxwood Canal Centre (located behind the Onslow Arms pub on Loxwood High Street, Loxwood, West Sussex RH14 0RD) which is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 2pm and has free entry. See www.weyarun.org.uk for more information.

The Wey & Arun Canal Trust, a registered charity, aims to restore the 23-mile abandoned canal which runs through Surrey and Sussex and create the missing link between Britain’s inland waterways and the English Channel. Our 3,000 members, volunteers and staff have restored significant stretches and our showcase site at Loxwood, West Sussex, hosts public boat trips from Spring to Autumn as well as welcoming canoeists and paddleboarders. The Trust was formed in 1973 and we are celebrating our 50year anniversary this year. Our long-distance footpath the ‘Wey-South Path’ is shown on Ordnance Survey maps and runs either next to or near to the canal route.

Dove Nursery News

Dove Nursery ended the Summer term with our annual Sports day and school leavers presentation. Despite the rain showers the children managed to perform favourite songs to our lovely supportive families and friends. They also sang a French counting song and demonstrated their French colour naming skills with our own Monsieur Qui Qui! With a break in the rain to drizzle we went out to play French Boules to find our champion of 2023, it was a very exciting match. This was followed by our mini races ending with our mum and child posy race.

Presentations of sports medals and certificates were awarded along with School leavers prizes. We also had a prize giving from the Big bird art competition which all the children took part in and several had won prizes so a proud day for us all. We would like to wish all our school leavers all the best as they start on their new adventure to school!

We still have some space for next term if you would like any information email dove_nursery@ btinternet.com

Henfield Self-Help Group Outing

The excursion to The Boat Café at Felpham on Thursday 6 July was a great success! Despite the grey and cloudy weather in Henfield when we left, the skies cleared in Felpham, making the day a very enjoyable one for us all.

We met at the Henfield Hall at 10.30 and were thoughtfully supplied with a bottle of water each. Once all of us were safely boarded on the coach we departed at 11am. What a joy it was when seated to be able to peer into residents gardens as we passed where there was a brilliant profusion of flowers on display in all their summer glory including roses, hollyhocks and peonies. Arriving at the venue just before midday we were directed to reserved seating in the café. The Self Help volunteer team made sure we were all comfortably seated before a choice of drinks including tea, coffee, beer or wine were distributed. A meal of freshly cooked fish and chips or ham, eggs and chips was then provided followed by a choice of vanilla, chocolate or strawberry shortcake ice cream. Afterwards we were free to sit in the sun or, as in my case, go for a brisk walk along by the sea to help the tasty meal go down!

All too son the time flew by and we had to leave, arriving back in Henfield just after 4pm. Sincere thanks and congratulations to all the Self Help volunteers, the drivers and the café staff for a wonderfully organised and enjoyable day out.

3rd Henfield Brownies news

3rd Henfield Brownies have had a very busy few months. We’ve been swimming, visited the Henfield Museum and played rounders on the common. We also had a sleepover with lots of fun activities. Back in June we had the annual canoe regatta where I am really pleased to say we won the gold medal for the 2nd year in a row with a winning time of 3 mins 17 seconds. Three of our Brownies earned their Brownie Gold Award, the highest badge you can get as a Brownie! Really well done to Millie, Isla and Cyneburh who were all invited to the annual County Awards evening at the start of July to celebrate their success. A number of Brownies have also earned their Brownie Bronze and Silver awards, hopefully they will get their Gold award too before they move up to Guides.

We do have some spaces for girls of all ages, from 4-18 if they would like to join us, and join in the fun. You can register your daughter via:

Other units would also welcome more help too. If you can spare a couple of hours a week, please sign up on the website. No prior experience is needed.

Lily Stubbs

Edith ‘Lily’ Stubbs was born in 1925 and grew up in North London with her parents, paternal grandmother, brothers Ron and Jack, and cousins Leslie and Doddy. Mum adored them all and spoke warmly of her idyllic childhood. Her education was cut short by the outbreak of war but despite her lack of formal qualifications she worked for the War Office processing requests for medical supplies to the troops. In 1947 she met her beloved Ray, recently returned from four years in a Japanese POW camp, and they were subsequently very happily married for 53 years, living in Enfield with children David and Janet.

In retirement they moved close to their son David and family in Newbury and in 2004 after Ray died, Lily moved to Henfield to be close to Jan, son-in-law Martin and their children Annie and Ellie (Love). Lily enjoyed settling into the Henfield community, living happily in Springhills, and quickly making many new friends in the village. She became a well-known and loved figure walking to the High Street with her rollator every day regardless of the weather, chatting to everyone she met and never missing an opportunity to help people.

In 2018 medical necessity meant moving to Uppermead Care Home amidst very caring and kind staff. These continued to be happy years with frequent family outings and visits in Henfield and the wider beauty of the Sussex countryside which she loved.

Lily is sorely missed by her family and friends and will always be remembered for her constant cheerful smile and appreciation of everyone and everything around her.

Her long and happy life was celebrated with a service of thanksgiving at St Peter’s Church, Henfield on 19 July amidst her family and many friends.

Peter Christian celebrates 20 years!

Twenty years ago, my wife and I decided it was time to use our long experience in menswear to create a company of our own. Traditional high street gentlemen’s outfitters were fast disappearing, forced out by big brands and high rents.

Our love of these charming, often eccentric bastions of masculinity inspired us to create Peter Christian. Starting the journey at humble beginnings on the Mackley Estate in Small Dole and now flourishing in the Star Industrial Estate in the heart of Partridge Green.

Starting from a capsule range of gent’s country attire and our soon-to-be signature garment; the

traditional nightshirt, we developed an eclectic collection of colourful, interesting clothing. From that tiny acorn this mighty sapling has grown, and we are proud to be dressing more men than ever. To celebrate the grand milestone of 20 years of trading, we hosted an afternoon filled with garden games and afternoon cream tea for the whole gang. The subsequent boundless rise of the business can be attributed to a love of menswear, hard work, determination, and a studiously picked team of enthusiastic local talent to keep the merry wheels spinning.

Sale of ‘Lillipots’ raises £245 for Eric Williams Fund!

Congratulations to the wonderful Lillian from the Henfield Haven who came up with the idea of decorating ceramic pots with faces, glasses and scarves, then filling them with plants – all to raise money for her friend Eric Williams, who is a volunteer and supporter of the Henfield Haven. Eric is currently undergoing treatment at Stoke Mandeville for a spinal injury, although he is due to return to Henfield very soon (at the time of going to print).

Lillian painted the pots, decorated and planted herself, then sold them (all!) in a morning at The Haven, raising a grand total of £245! Well done Lilly, your kindness and creativity is really appreciated. If anyone wishes to donate to help fund Eric’s home adaptations and an adapted car, please go to https://www.gofundme. com/f/3ba6s-accessible-car Editor

Revd Paul Doick made Honorary Canon of Chichester Cathedral

The Bishop of Chichester, The Right Revd Dr Martin Warner, has appointed Revd Paul an honorary Canon of Chichester Cathedral. The invitation from the Bishop has been made in recognition of Paul’s service to both the parish and the Diocese, especially recognising his work training curates, as Rural Dean and as Chair of the Diocesan Advisory Committee on the Care of Church Buildings.

Paul will become part of the Cathedral’s College of Canons and as such he will be invited to attend the Cathedral for significant celebrations and once a year to gather with the full time Cathedral Canons, and his fellow honorary Canons to discuss the Cathedral’s work.

He will also be entitled to use the title Revd Canon, but is very happy to still be called Paul! At the news of the announcement Paul said, “It is a real privilege to be invited to become a member of the College of Canons. Chichester Cathedral has always had a special place in my heart, both from the time I was head chorister of my local church in the early 1980’s to when I was ordained as a Deacon there in 2005. I’m very grateful to Bishop Martin for inviting me and look forward to the connection that Henfield, Shermanbury and Woodmancote will now have with our Cathedral”. Honorary Canons are allocated a stall in the Quire of a cathedral and Paul will be installed at Chichester Cathedral during Evensong on Sunday 1st October.

Henfield Football Club donates £1k to Foodbank

Earlier this summer Henfield Football club donated a massive £1,000 to the Horsham and District Food Bank. The money was donated in the form of £25 vouchers for Sainsbury’s supermarket and will go to support local vulnerable families in Henfield.

The money was raised through the ‘Big Festive Prize Draw’ in the run up to Christmas 2022. The success of the this raffle was down to the support of nearly 30 local Henfield and Sussex businesses who all donated wonderful prizes, as well as parents and grandparents of many of the youth players who also supported the raffle by both donating prizes and purchasing raffle tickets. Some of the amazing prizes offered included a £250 Tesco voucher, a signed and framed Lewis Dunk football shirt, a current signed Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club team shirt and a barrow-full of festive booze.

Joe Penfold, co-chair of Henfield Football Club, said: “We are really pleased to have been able to make a big donation to the Horsham and District food Bank to help people in the Henfield community. We are incredibly grateful to all the wonderful local businesses and people who supported our fundraising efforts to help make this happen.”

This donation is just one of the many ways in which Henfield Football Club supports the local Henfield community through its ‘Score Some Smiles’ campaign which is now in its third year. Other youth team activities last year included making Christmas cards and festive ‘jolly jars’ for residents at local care homes. A huge thank you to the managers, coaches, volunteers and everyone else behind the scenes at the Club for all of your hard work.

Pedal for Henfield Returns!

Henfield Leisure Centre is once again the host of another fundraising challenge on the weekend of Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd September. A team of fourteen intrepid members will be cycling 100 miles of the off-road South Downs Way over the two days, and at the same time a ‘spin-a-thon’ will be taking place at the Leisure Centre. Anyone (and everyone!) can get involved by contacting the Leisure Centre reception or by popping in to book on one or more of the sixteen classes.

When Henfield Leisure Centre first opened its doors thirty-three years ago on July 29th 1990, it heralded the dawn of a bright new sporting era for the village. Since then, a huge number of people have passed through its doors, not just to enjoy the modern gym, fitness classes and personal training, but also for Sharky’s Soft Play and café.

Henfield Leisure Centre is a registered charity (with incredibly low membership fees) and it relies on memberships and fundraising to remain open and provide a much needed community facility for all ages and abilities.

In 2011 siblings Sammie Bremner, Martin Hayne and Tracey Prescott formed 777 Fundraising to raise money for Henfield Leisure Centre by completing various challenge events. They continued with a cycling challenge from Paris to Henfield, and to date the team raised in excess of £30k for Henfield Leisure Centre – a phenomenal achievement!

Some of the team members told us what has inspired them to attempt this challenging bike ride. Adrian Hillman said; “As a HLC Trustee I am acutely aware of how difficult it is to keep this absolutely essential facility open during such challenging times. We can’t do it alone,

26 | BN5 Magazine sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

so we are calling on the Henfield community to support us and help to keep the village fit and well!” Mark Berrett said; “I’m doing it because once again Tracey has been pretty persuasive! She seems to be able to convince all of us that it’s a good idea (often over a glass of something) then the reality hits when we’re 50 miles in!” Rob Slaughter, whose brother Trevor is also part of the team, said; ‘I’m doing it to get to be the first in the Slaughter family to get to the finish!”

Leisure Centre manager Simon Thompson and 777 Fundraising would like to thank their event sponsors so far: Adrian and Katherine Hillman at Rushfields; David Smith at Clif Bar; Emily Joyes at Stevens Estate Agents and Lettings; Danielle Hope at Henfield Home Checks; and Jon Bull at Secured 24/7. All their support will give the cycling team a massive boost, just when the rolling hills of the South Downs start to seem impossible!

To donate to this latest challenge visit: www. justgiving.com/campaign/pedalforhenfieldreturns, or why not take part in the spin-a-thon yourself or with a group of friends or work colleagues? For details, please call 01273 494984 or contact tracey.prestcott@hotmail.co.uk

Please help the team to reach their £10k target to buy essential equipment for Henfield Leisure Centre.

World Record Attempt for Guinness Book of Records (The oldest man to walk between John O’Groats and Land’s End)

It was around September 2022 when I was driving along and switched on the car radio. It was in the middle of a book review where listeners could phone in to ask questions of the author. The book being reviewed was “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry”. Some of you may have read the book or seen the film but for those that haven’t it is about a retired man who walks from the West Country to Berwick upon Tweed to visit a work colleague who was dying from cancer whom he had not spoken to for 20 years.

I read the book and thought “I can do that”, and then my mind turned to the famous walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End. The oldest man to complete the walk is Alan Knight who on 2 November 2021 was 76 years and 144 days. I am now 80 years old and planning to start the walk on 1 September this year and hopefully finishing it by 31 October or thereabouts. There isn’t any limit on time. The record is for the oldest.

I have never attempted such a huge task but feel confident that I can do it. I have run about 30 marathons/ultra-marathons. My longest ultra in one day was the well-known Comrades Marathon in South Africa over 55 miles. I have trekked to the top of Kilimanjaro, Salkantay Inca Trail, and at 73 trekked to Everest Base Camp. My daughter and I also ran the Cape Odyssey over the mountains near Cape Town running for five days at an average of a marathon per day. My wife and I also trekked across England on the famous ‘Coast to Coast’ walk.

I will be walking by myself (unless of course someone wishes to join me for a day) with a support driver, starting in John O’Groats down the east coast of Scotland through to Inverness, Edinburgh, Carlisle, Kendal, Preston, Shrewsbury, Hereford, Monmouth, Bristol, Taunton, Okehampton, Bodmin, Penzance and Lands End. If anyone wants to follow my progress I will be putting my daily report, pictures and videos onto ‘the drive’ (cloud) making it available to everyone.

I have chosen St. Barnabas House Hospice as my charity as it is where my sister received such special care. They do such a wonderful job in supporting not only people towards the end of their life but also their families. I have set up a ‘Just Giving’ page which can be reached by going on to www.justgiving.com. [In the search bar type in ‘Anthony Bishop’, click on the image and follow the simple instructions.] Follow directions for claiming gift aid if you are a British tax payer. St. Barnabas will handle that side.

How much should you give? That is a personal decision but based on 900 miles, a sponsorship of 1 penny per mile = £9 or a sponsorship of 10 pennies per mile = £90. Or just make a donation. I am funding my whole journey myself so all monies collected go directly to St. Barnabas House Hospice.

Thank You

SHERMANBURY

£725,000

A wonderfully light and airy bungalow, which was built for our clients. It is designed with a slight ‘nod’ to the Skandia Hus design enjoying an open plan kitchen and living area which forms the hub of the property. Built in 1993, there is plenty to suggest that the bungalow was ahead of its time, yet the kitchen has been upgraded in more recent years and the property benefits from solar panelling.

Henfield Shedders plan to revive historic Henfield building

The Tanyard Barn is a historic Henfield building, thought to have been added to the Tanyard field between 1860 and 1874, after the Tanyard closed in 1844. The original barn was much larger than the barn which exists today but sadly it fell into disrepair over the years. The photograph, provided by courtesy of Alan Barwick, shows the barn as it was in 1989 before the decay really set in. In 1994 it was partly demolished and the materials used by the BP Guild to repair the remainder of the barn leaving the structure which exists today.

It is currently a leaky building used by the Parish Council to store materials and is becoming increasingly dilapidated. In the last 30 years no organisation has expressed an interest in improving and using the barn, and without an apparent need for it, Horsham District Council have been reluctant to spend money on

maintaining the building. Now plans are being drawn up by The Henfield Shed to make the building into a home for the charity which seeks to promote social inclusion and combat isolation and its effects on mental health. This will enable it to vacate its temporary home behind Southdown Galleries for a permanent home in the centre of the village.

The project will see the current barn brought up to date and secure by the Parish Council with an extension by the Henfield Shed largely following the footprint of the original building which will house the workshops for The Henfield Shed and will also incorporate weatherproof storage pens for the Parish Council and the Henfield Conservation Group. Naturally, The Henfield Shed will consult with the immediate neighbours and the community at large to canvas opinion and address concerns.

Local interest | SEPTEMBER 2023 36 | BN5 Magazine www.henfieldbn5.co.uk
2023

Provisional plans are that this community building will be owned by Horsham District Council, as is the present barn, but will be leased to Henfield Parish Council who will grant a sub-lease to The Henfield Shed.

Henfield Parish Council and The Henfield Shed will apply for funding from The Rural England Prosperity Fund which is a fund created by the Government as part of its levelling up agenda, and administered locally by Horsham District Council to provide an investment in local priorities of £2.6m by the end of March 2025. Individual grants of up to £75k are available for local projects, with a contribution of 25% coming from local communities. Both the Parish Council and The Henfield Shed hope to obtain funding under this scheme.

The Henfield Shed is working with the Economic Development Team at Horsham District Council as well as Henfield Parish Council, the Henfield Commons Joint Committee and the Henfield Conservation Volunteers to bring about this transformation of a local building which will, if left to deteriorate, become unsafe and an eyesore. As a local charity, The Henfield Shed is well aware of the importance of the Tanyard as a nature reserve in the middle of Henfield and of its importance both to the local wildlife and to the community at large. It already plays an important role in helping local residents repair and re-use

goods rather than send them to the tip. Virtually 90% of the wood used by The Shedders is reclaimed, recycled and repurposed, so ensuring that their activities contribute positively on the environment

To that end, The Henfield Shed will be taking and acting on expert advice from all the appropriate authorities to ensure that the ecology and bio diversity of the Tanyard field will not be damaged by its proposals which it will be submitting to Horsham District Council for planning approval later this year.

Mike Morgan’s contribution to Henfield life

Mike Morgan stepped down from representing Henfield Ward at Horsham District Council back in May and the tradition of a Henfield Independent Councillor continues with the successful election of Malcolm Eastwood. Mike continues to volunteer as a Parish Councillor in the village.

Mike came to live in Henfield in 1974, as a property conveyancer at Griffith Smith. He became involved in community life by joining the St Peter’s School PTA when his two children, Warren and Sharon, became pupils at the school. In 1987 he was elected to Henfield Parish Council and became chairman of Lighting & Open Spaces, Finance, and later the Commons Committee, and was voted Chairman in 1997. He was part of the organising team for the very first Henfield Late Night Christmas Shopping event, there are some fantastic photos in the Museum of this hugely successful Dickensian themed night. This led to the formation of the Henfield Traders’ Association and many more collaborative events.

Mike’s contributions during this first part of his Parish Council tenure were considerable and have shown over the years to be hugely positive investments in the village. From simple aesthetic improvements like working with the late Peter Hudson to put hanging baskets, flower beds and planters in the High Street and around the village, to his involvement in the building of the new Henfield Leisure Centre and the Rothery Sports Pavilion. Anyone who’s been involved in this type of project will appreciate the hours of ‘behind the scenes’ work to facilitate planning, engage builders, find the grants and convincing local people of the benefits; no mean feat!

He was also instrumental in the building of the Skate Park, alongside his partner Sheila Matthews (who was then Councillor at Horsham District, she was honoured with an MBE for her services). Mike is passionate about providing activities for our young people, illustrated by his 25-year involvement with the Clarkes Mead Trust and the building of the Scout Hut, and his support of Henfield Youth Club.

Local interest | SEPTEMBER 2023 40 | BN5 Magazine www.henfieldbn5.co.uk
“Mike Morgan is really the ‘Father of the House’ as far as Henfield Parish Council is concerned. His wise words, extensive knowledge and long-term memory of the Parish Council mean that every Councillor is appreciative of his advice. The refrains “I’ll ask Mike,” or “What does Mike think?” is indicative of the high esteem in which he is held.”
ELAINE GOODYEAR, HPC CHAIRMAN
All photographs © BN5 magazine, except p41 right, © Henfield Museum

“When I joined Henfield Parish Council in 2005 Mike was already a long serving and experienced councillor. What struck me over the following years working with him was that he was a very conscientious and hard-working councillor fully engaged in the activities of council. He still found time to be a very active member of the Royal British Legion and the success of Henfield’s Remembrance Service is largely down to his input. He was a great pleasure to work with and has given outstanding service to the community over a great many years.”

RAY OSGOOD, PAST HPC CHAIRMAN

For Mike, it’s not all about the big projects, but sometimes just making things work better. He arranged the finances for the Parish Offices to be extended and improved and the new Museum. This new space provided a better and more practical area for staff and councillors to grow into, especially important since the Parish Council now have far more village responsibilities than they did back in the 80s! The museum has become an important visitor attraction. Recently he and other Councillors saw the benefit of full-time works officers; which has saved Council considerable amounts of money on subcontractors, as well as allowing them to be responsive when a road is flooded or a tree is down. Residents now can’t imagine life without them. Another similar ‘housekeeping’ project was the renovation of the high street loos; a somewhat unglamorous subject, but it’s now hitting the headlines that the UK has lost 50% of its conveniences over the last decade. It’s a crucial issue severely affecting many people, especially those with disabilities and the elderly.

“Walking down Henfield High Street with Mike Morgan took a long time. We were stopped every few steps by people wanting to talk to him about local issues or simply to say hello. Not only do people know Mike, but he seemed to know everyone too and made time for them, to understand their concerns and try to help.

This experience of spending time with Mike in ‘his patch’ of Henfield very much reflects his work as a district Councillor. He was diligent in his many years of Council work, seeking to improve life for those who live and work in the whole District.”

BARBARA CHILDS, ACTING CHIEF EXECUTIVE, HORSHAM DISTRICT COUNCIL

Mike also understands the importance of bringing the community together. In fact, two of the highlights of the village calendar; the Summer Fayre and the Remembrance Commemorations, are successful in no small part due to his hard work. He led the first Fayre organisation in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of VE day, and it became a biannual village fixture. His last show was in 2018, when he stood down due to pressures of Council work. Our involvement with village fayres at BN5 means we’ve sat on many organising committees and can vouch for Mike’s calm and thorough approach; he listens to everyone’s ideas and works long hours to make sure each event is a success.

The Remembrance event runs like clockwork and is much admired, our Henfield parade regularly brings in crowds of hundreds, larger than many neighbouring towns. Mike has worked hard with HPC, the Henfield Club and local Churches to make it inclusive as well as traditional. He has (until retiring last month) been the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal coordinator for Henfield.

He held the role for 25 years and over this period Henfield people have donated a phenomenal £149,526.48, to be exact!

“Mike has been a wonderful mentor to me since I took up the role of Parish Clerk in 2014. His sage advice is invaluable, after nearly thirty-six years as a Henfield Parish Councillor and 8 years as a District Councillor at Horsham he has a vast range of experience in all matters Council related. I would like to say a big “thank you” to you Mike, for all the help you have given me and the sound advice you have given to other Parish Councillors and staff alike over that period. It really is greatly appreciated!”

In 2015, after 20 years’ service, Sheila Matthews stood down at Horsham District Council as an Independent councillor. Mike (and many others in the village) appreciated the importance of an independent representative at Horsham, free of the restrictive shackles of party politics, so he stood in the May election that year and won a seat. He has been a hugely effective representative at Horsham, always putting Henfield’s interests first.

“Mike Morgan was an extremely conscientious councillor, quietly achieving much benefit for the community over many years. In Council meetings he expressed his views fairly and firmly and was noted for his independent

District Councillor

impact

One of Mike’s main aims at District Council has been to fight unlawful developments and prevent the sprawl of unconsidered building projects. This is a complex area and he has never been afraid to stand up for Henfield, sometimes when Officers are recommending the go-ahead. He has been supportive of local commerce and well-considered planning, but he is passionate about making sure developments suit the local environment and will be integrated successfully. His presence has helped to secure project loans for various Henfield causes, including Henfield Leisure Centre. He’s also assisted local residents on their planning, social housing, refuse, council tax and noise issues; sometimes small issues but ones which can blight people’s lives.

“Cllr Mike

has been a diligent and dedicated representative for his community throughout his time on the Council, as well as a constructive and valued voice in Council meetings. I enjoyed working alongside him and will certainly miss his contribution, I wish him the very best for the future.”

BOFFEY, LIBERAL DEMOCRAT LEADER OF HORSHAM DISTRICT COUNCIL

Mike is at pains to point out that all the projects he’s mentioned were only achieved as part of a team of very hard-working volunteers, he sees himself as a cog in a wheel, alongside many others. He hopes that he can encourage new residents to step forward and make a contribution to their village, it’s rewarding and especially important now the village is growing in size. The effects are long-lasting too. Looking to the future, he’s pleased to be chairing his favourite committee; Village Amenities – which keeps the village looking beautiful and a great place to live. All these contributions, small and large, have been undertaken quietly and without fanfare. Next time you use the Leisure Centre, admire the flowers in the High Street, take your children to one of the play parks or the skate park (or even use the conveniences in the high street!) remember it’s thanks to people like Mike and the team of Parish Councillors who make our village a better place to live.

Now, the website has had a similar makeover to fully complement the Hall, so please take a look around and find out what the Henfield Hall can offer you!

www.henfieldhall.org.uk

The Hall has several versatile spaces, from the large, open and bright main hall with a stage perfect for musical events and performances, to smaller meeting halls and adaptable rooms. You can make use of the enclosed garden area, or the large and well-stocked kitchen, both of which are beautifully maintained. You’ll find room rates are exceptionally reasonable with further discounts for local clubs, groups and non-commercial events.

Explore the site; there you’ll discover the various room sizes, how many people can be accommodated in each area, seated or standing. You’ll see how much furniture is available (all included in hire prices) and any extra features you

can enjoy. From concerts, parties, celebrations, fairs, weddings, meetings, talks and even memorial events, the Hall is the perfect location in the heart of Henfield, with great parking and accessibility. The Hall also enjoys great WIFI connectivity and a fully licenced bar. Catering for your events can also be provided.

Watch this space! Over the next few months, you’ll see it improving further with an online availability and booking system - so you can see when rooms are available and book straight away. Please use and support your local Henfield Hall, to keep it a thriving community centre of the village.

PS: Did you know the Henfield Hall is a registered charity, owned by the village, and relies entirely on income from hire and local fundraising?

Keeping the Hall maintained and focussed on the future is down to the volunteer trustees and friends of the Hall, and they’re doing a fantastic job! If you’d like to join them, it’s one of the most worthwhile volunteering projects in the village and your contribution will be really welcomed.

Family Charter

Running any business successfully can be complex, but a family or owner managed business adds another layer of complexity. Balancing the needs of the business with the needs of the people can seem daunting. Developing a Family Charter will help to bind the values that are important to the family into the business. Including family members who are both actively involved with those who are not, helps to develop a team approach and helps with decisions and problem solving, as well as creates a level of trust. As with many things, the power is in the process as much as in the developed charter. The Charter builds a practical structure to decision making and strategy which is based on the foundation of the family and business values and vision. Imagine the Charter is like a house:

• The Foundation - A family business is a complex structure as the values important to a family are not necessarily the same as those that apply in the business world. This often leads to confusion, tension and disruption when sensitive issues arise. Will they be dealt with under the family’s value system or those of the business world?

• Family Values - Each family has a set of values that are important. These will include concepts such as love, support for family members, respect, honesty, and integrity.

• Business Values - Although there will be some overlap, these will also include values such as a commitment to growth, continuous improvement, excellence, and customer focus.

• Family Business (FB) values and visionThese two often conflicting value sets need to be reconciled into a set of values applicable to the family business as an entity in its own right. These values help the family to identify a uniting common vision for the family business. It is useful to distil these into a mission statement for the family in business.

• Structures - Structures are developed to govern the Business System and the Family System and to control the interaction between them. There needs to be an effective functioning Board for the business and a Family Council which manages family issues that impact on the business. A Charter or Constitution then becomes the governing document for the Family Council. Once values

and visions are distilled at the outset the structures will follow, to lead how the values interact. For example, the family may have strong ecological beliefs and its values are driven by sustainability. Does this impact directly on the way the family business is run, e.g. must investments be ‘green’ too?

• Typically the Family Charter will contain several key elements relating to ownership, leadership, employment, communication and governance. These include:

• Background: History of the business; Definitions: who is family; Governance structure – family council, family forum, family office; Meetings – how often do they take place and who can attend; Vision, values and code of conduct.

• Working in the Family Business: Joining the business; Can spouses and in-laws work in the business; Remuneration; Career path and promotion; Leadership; Exit – can a family member be fired, how is that dealt with?

• Those not working in the family business: Opportunities to contribute to the value setting; Education – support to gain skills needed in the family business.

• Succession and transition: Estate planning, Wills and Powers of Attorney; Buy/sell agreements; Binding financial agreements.

• Procedural: Decision making, voting, who has a vote; Mediation; Confidentiality; Updating the Family Charter.

Having developed the Charter, two protective mechanisms are required to ensure that it lasts:

1. Renew (update) - Invariably not all issues will be covered in the first draft. More importantly

60 | BN5 Magazine sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

constant change within the family, the business environment and society mean that a mechanism of regular updates is required. This is the process that you will commit to, so that the Charter remains current.

2. Imbue (the culture) - The document itself will have little impact unless its message and the principles that underlie it are imbued into the hearts and minds of all family members. How will you ensure this happens? How will children and in-laws be introduced to the family’s values, principles and codes of practice?

In summary, the Family Charter is about governance. While good governance can sometime be seen as ‘nice to have’, the reality is that good governance is critical because it’s all about making the right decision at the right time. The steps and structures are the repository and filing system for that good governance.

As noted at the start, the process of pulling together the Charter is often just as important, if not more so, as the Charter itself. The meetings, debates and decisions are made within a clearly defined format, so that the aim for the process always remains clearly in sight.
