06 What’s On from the

Welcome to the September edition of BN5 magazine. As the summer draws to a close (and what a summer it’s been!) now is the ideal time to enjoy some outdoor events in the cooler weather. Please take a look at our events pages for ideas, or perhaps celebrate our brilliant food and farming heritage with with the Horsham District Food & Drink Festival (featured on page 27). It was a great pleasure to meet Anthony Seddon (pictured on our cover with his little girl, Aria) who is running the entire distance from Brighton to Ukraine. Please take the time to read his story on page 22, if you’re a runner and happen to meet him at any local races please say hi and lend him your support on his journey. This month we’ve been working with Nigel Higson from HART (Henfield Area Response Team) to help raise awareness of all the defibrillator locations in our village. The centrefold is a handy pull-out; we’d encourage you to keep it somewhere useful after you’ve finished reading BN5, because these lifesaving machines could help you or a friend or neighbour one day. The list is ever-expanding and we’ll update you in a future BN5 if we hear of new defibs, or when one becomes externally sited and becomes available 24 hours. On the way home we enjoyed the beautiful scenic route of Beachy Head and Cuckmere Haven. Our thanks go to Mo Michie for all the organisation and Maureen Dexter and our wonderful volunteers for looking after our every need! Also a big thank you to Micky who valiantly drove the mini bus taking members who were unable to board the coach! Thank you all for the perfect day.

It should be no surprise to any of us that the NHS is under immense pressure and our own Medical Centre is not immune to those pressures. Covid vaccinations, an increase in patient activity as we emerge from lockdowns and bouts of covid amongst the Medical Centre personnel have all made the last few months incredibly challenging.

The difference in Henfield is that we have our community spirit and willingness to pull together to help each other when one of us comes under pressure. We have offered help, not as doctors and nurses of course, but to support the Medical Centre with administrative matters. A small team of volunteers, both Parish Councillors and from the Community Partnership, have been support ing the dispensary during August. They have been texting patients to come and collect their medication to clear the shelves ahead of some planned building work in the dispensary. You

Brownies Awards Evening

3rd Henfield Brownies finished of this term with an awards evening, where I gave out almost 40 badges that had been earned over the last three months. This included two very special awards, a Brownie Silver Award for Millie, just the second Brownie in Henfield to earn this, and a Brownie Gold Award for Chloe. This is the highest badge a Brownie can earn and she is the first Brownie in Henfield to achieve it. Along the way to getting her gold award, Chloe completed nine interest badges, including Know your rights, Baking and Performing. She earned seven skills builders Awards, covering topics such as First Aid, Innovate, Recycling, and being a leader. She also did 30 hours and 45 minutes of qualifying unit meeting activities! It has taken Chloe three years to get her Gold award, including doing a number of activities at home during the lockdowns. A very well done to WeChloe!do have a few spaces for girls of all ages, from 4-18 if they would like to join us, and see how many badges they can earn. You can register your daughter via the Girlguiding website: www. girlguiding.org.uk We still desperately need some more volunteers to keep our Guide units open, otherwise one of them will close. If you can spare a couple of hours a week, please sign up on the website. No prior experience is needed. Natalie Denning Self Help Group Annual outing At last! After waiting three long years in anticipa tion for our annual summer outing, on 14 July the coach arrives and we set off with our sun hats, sun screen, walkers and wheelchairs for East bourne. It was a glorious day as we arrived at the Burlington Hotel for a very pleasant lunch, after which we were able to explore the pier and walk along the prom to admire the colourful gardens.

There are other administrative tasks that we know we can support and we will continue to work with the Medical Centre to do what we can to help them manage their workload in the coming weeks. So, if you do get that text message from Henfield Medical Centre please do your best to respond positively. If we all work together, we can ensure that we create the environment and time that the team need to look after all of us. Many thanks for your support.

Commenting on the funds allocation, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Environ ment and Rural Affairs Cllr James Wright said: “It’s great to be supporting proactive community groups like Henfield Haven. The funds are being used in a way which will directly benefit the en vironment, combat local climate change and will reduce their energy costs which can be passed on to their clients.”

A series of new community drop-in sessions are being introduced across the Horsham District to help residents who are struggling with the cur rent cost of living crisis and need help accessing key services to help them stay independent and Thehealthy.drop-in sessions have been organised by Horsham District Council’s Community Services team in partnership with West Sussex County Council Partnerships and Communities team.

Come and help save Small Dole Skatepark at our Big Summer Blow Out! Our local, and rather unique, wooden skatepark that has been serving our skate community of West Sussex so well for the last 15 years is rot ting into the ground. So, we’ve formed a team (Friends of Small Dole Skatepark) to raise funds to restore our park before it’s too late. We need a minimum of £45,000 to get this project going, and together with our local Council, skate community and enthusiastic supporters, we’re doing lots of cool things and events to raise the money. Our last Skate Jam was a huge success attract ing a couple of hundred people from all over the surrounding areas and raising over £1,000! We aim to build on that success with another Skate Jam event on the 10th of September from 11am - 4pm at the skate park in Mackley Field in Small Dole. We’ll be skating and shooting and BMX riding, there will be a BBQ and cake stall, music, prizes and giveaways, plus a mini merch market. And if all that wasn’t enough… We’ve also asked 21 fantastic artists to create custom skate-deck art for a special exhibition in The Wandering Gal lery also on show on the 10th. We’ll be auctioning the artwork and all profits will go to the restora tion of the skatepark. If you’d like to donate please go to friends-of-small-dole-skate-parkwww.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/

Not only is the club a place of learning but also a social hub. Brian Walton Phew what a scorcher! There has been so little rainfall this year that I ex pect everyone has struggled to keep their patch alive, particularly through the heat wave. A sur prising number of plants have survived however, and some have even thrived in the dry conditions and warmth. This is just a reminder to gather seeds in ready for the Seed Swap next year. Anything that has pro duced seeds has obviously done well in the heat and is therefore the sort of plant that we should probably be growing if these hot conditions are going to continue over the next few years.

We may have lost plants as well, so we can look forward to starting again next year with new seeds and new plantings. Hope springs eternal… Happy gathering!

Emma Merkl Stalls available at the Charities Christmas Fair

Our First Year The Henfield Weekly Market is currently celebrat ing its first full year of trading and we are delighted with its community support. A post-covid re start in September 2021 saw three stallholders of the previous Monday market get together to help reinvigorate the Market with additional advertising including flyers, banners, social media posts and press features. Our ethos has been conviviality and the joy of meet ups, in conjunction with qual ity and sustainability, reflective of the current and necessary circular economy mode of living well, with less waste and minimal resource use. Each week features some new and exciting stallholders coming on board, in partnership with our regular cohort of appreciated stands and goods. On offer are a wide variety of items from eggs, jams, chutneys and cakes to country wear, jewellery, skincare, books and much, much more. Our repair services for watches and clothes are proving very popular, whilst Sustainable Henfield offer a “repair cafe” to give new life to old items instead of discarding them. In addition to our Weekly Market, we have branched out with special weekend events throughout our first year including Christmas fairs, various antiques, collectables and retro events, and arts & craft fairs. We are delighted to note that the entry fees and the sale of teas and cof fees at these events, together with the proceeds from our Christmas charity auction, have enabled us to distribute a commendable total of £3,000 among the following charitable causes: the Hen field Haven, Warren Playgroup, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Know Dementia, the Friends of Henfield Medical Centre, the Henfield Youth Club, Age Concern, the BP Guild, Felines First Cat Rescue, the Henfield Hall, Mind, Sustainable Henfield, Kit Wilson Dogs Trust, the Red Cross Ukraine Appeal and the RSPCA. We have also endeavoured to support local families facing personal challenges. We are grateful for the constant and good-hu moured community support and goodwill that has driven us on and allowed us to flourish in our first year. Collectively, we now look forward to new challenges and endeavours ahead. All enquiries can be made to henfieldweeklymar ket@gmail.com Guerin

Henfield and the Great Big Dialect Hunt Have you ever come across friends and family using words that you would not expect and that might be part of a local dialect? For example, we take the word “twittens” for granted, but across the country there are many different names for these little pathways. Perhaps there are words that might have been used where they lived be fore they came to Henfield? In the 1950s and 60s, researchers from the Uni versity of Leeds carried out the Survey of English Dialects, visiting people in more than 300 places to record their many ways of speaking. More than half a century later, we want to find out what has changed and what has stayed the same with a new survey. You are invited to join the Dialect Hunt by coming to a fascinating talk by Amy Stone who is the En gagement Officer for our area. This will give you the opportunity of hearing more about a current research project and how you could contribute to it.

Rob Gordon, Henfield Museum Henfield Scouts September marks the first anniversary of 1st Hen field Scout Group moving temporarily to Hillside Scout Campsite in Small Dole from our traditional Scout Hut home, to facilitate its demolition and rebuild. Despite the upheaval, it’s been a suc cessful move for both the Group and Hillside as in the last 12 months we have seen growth across all our However, sections.forCubs (age 8-10½) this Hillside success has unfortunately meant that following Easter there was a lack of capacity at Hillside to accommodate our Friday pack, and as the hut rebuild has taken longer than planned, it resulted in the need to temporarily merge our packs on a Tuesday. We are considering looking for extra temporary accommodation and extra parent lead ers while the hut rebuild goes into its second year, to help capacity. From the start of this term we will be starting our second Beaver colony and we look forward to welcoming new Beavers (age 6-8) and par ent leaders to enjoy the fun of Scouting and to complement the excellent new team of Leaders.

A huge thank you to all the adults and young people that make 1st Henfield the success it is, and if you wish to join please get in touch!

There is unequivocal evidence that human activi ties are causing climate change and contributing to increasingly extreme temperatures, heavy rainfall events, and rising sea levels around the world. In August last year the UN Secretary-Gen eral António Guterres presented the UN landmark climate report which said it is a ‘code red’ for humanity. Only one year on the world is experiencing record temperatures. We have reached a tipping point. Global warming will be irreversible if Governments around the World don’t act. There is still time if we use solu tions that are already available to us now. How can you take action? Put into practice Sussex Green Living’s R words: rethink, refuse, reduce, refill, repair, recycle, repurpose and renewable energy, and find a local environmental group, learn, take action and encourage others to join you (look at https://seclimatealliance.uk/about/ for groups in the South East). Sussex Green Living runs the Sussex Green Hub with the help of many volunteers on the last Sat urday of each month in Horsham, where people can get items repaired, bottles refilled, recycling advice, free food from the Horsham Community Fridge, carbon reduction advice and much www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk/sussex-green-hub/more

During the course you will learn a song within the group, which makes it less daunting. And, very importantly, you do not have to be able to read music. You can book your place by contacting vocalfusionacapella@gmail.com or calling John Higgins on 01444 482183. Zoë Peate

Soaring temperatures have left Sussex residents sweltering after an extreme heat warning raised the question whether this week has been the hot test on record in the region and what we should be doing to tackle climate change.

Anthony, who lives in Portslade with his wife Anna and two daughters (Gabriella, 5 and Aria, 2) was thrilled to be given such enthusiastic support from the Henfield community, as well as the running community at large. “I realise that what we’re doing is not just about the coins and notes people donate to us at the races or online, but we are reminding everyone of what’s happening in Ukraine right now,” he said.

B ack in July we had an email to the BN5 office from Paul Crowe, chairman of Henfield Joggers. The Joggers were about to hold their first ‘official’ event for the wider running community since 2019, the Seven Stiles Race, which is an annual four-mile run around the village, taking in Henfield’s most picturesque views (along the edge of the river Adur). Around 400 enthusiastic runners were expected to Amongstparticipate.those runners was Anthony Seddon, who had booked a place at the Seven Stiles to ‘clock up’ a few more miles for a rather special challenge. He wasn’t just running four miles, or a marathon, or even a marathon a day for a week; Anthony has set himself the quite extraordinary goal of running races amounting to the entire distance from the Amex stadium in Brighton to Dnipro in Ukraine, 1,569 exhausting miles!

Anthony’s wife, Anna, is Ukrainian and they met, by chance, (Anna says it was fate!), one day back in 2012, in much happier times. A keen Brighton and Hove Albion and England football supporter, Anthony had travelled with friends to support his team in the Euros and happened to be in a small bar in the centre of Dnipro after their van broke down. They spent the evening chatting, exchanged numbers and stayed in touch. Four months later they met again (being a serious football fan means you travel a lot, which was convenient for this fledgling romance) and just over a year later they were married in Dnipro. They have lived in Portslade since 2016 and when war broke out in February, Anna was keen to bring her family to safety. All males of conscription age need to stay in Ukraine so Anna’s brother remains and his wife and child have stayed with him. Anna’s mum left Dnipro to

As well as Chairman of Henfield Joggers, Paul happens to be part of the Henfield for Ukraine group, which has been welcoming new Ukrainian residents to the village. He knew this group and many of the Ukrainian families settled here would like to cheer Anthony on and support him in this incredible mission. Sunday 24th July was a beautifully sunny day, the King’s Field was filled with the cheerful sight of club flags fluttering and runners socialising before they set off under the big green Henfield Joggers arch. Members Trevor and Ilidia were busy taking the last-minute entries in the Leisure

Centre games hall and the cake stall was doing brisk trade. Adding to the colour were a group of Ukrainian supporters, with huge bright flags and big smiles, ready to greet Anthony and his family.

It’s wonderful to see how Henfield steps up to support people in need; illustrated with the warm welcome offered to our new Ukrainian residents, with the various van-loads of shipments being sent from the village and now the unwavering support given to this young family through the Henfield Joggers. Emma Cole

The Seven Stiles saw an extra £350 for his funds from Henfield’s generous donations and they have some fundraising ideas to help boost the kitty further, including a 24 hour runathon were they hope to clock up some miles to Ukraine. Watch this space! If you’re a runner and would like to get involved with Henfield Jogger’s plans, please email Paul Crowe at enquiries@henfieldjoggers.co.uk. If you’d like to donate and support Anthony (in a little less energetic way!) he’d appreciate donations of any size on his Go Fund Me page www.gofundme.com/f/run2ukraine. Anthony would welcome runners to join him for any of his forthcoming races, you can find the list here:

SEPTEMBER 2022 | Local interest 01273 494002 BN5 Magazine | 23 live with them in safety in Portslade, but found it too hard to be in the UK while her son and family were still in danger. It’s a worrying time for Anna. “Dnipro is not on the front line, but life is a million miles from normal,” she explained. “Bombs fall, air-raid sirens go off more than once a day so there are frequent trips to shelters when the rocket attacks begin. There are shortages and blackouts. I live in constant fear for my family and friends.” This horrific situation and the first-hand accounts from family drove her to do something more to help. A good friend who is a paramedic working on the front-line told Anna they were desperately short of life-saving medical supplies, and she responded immediately by purchasing the items needed. Anthony then drove the consignment to the Polish border into the safe hands of their paramedic friend, and they knew they were making a difference. The money Anthony is raising with his run is used to purchase bandages, torniquets, essential medicines and supplies used for people injured by war. They’ve sent five consignments already and have raised over £21,000 but the need, sadly, doesn’t abate. Until the war is over and her friends and family are safe, Anna and Anthony pledge to continue their fundraising and their journeys to the border with supplies. Henfield Joggers are also determined to support Anthony with his running, his fundraising, and with moral support. They’ve already had a runner ‘buddying’ with him at the Highdown Hike run, wearing a Run 2 Ukraine yellow and blue shirt.

I’m now off to watch re-runs of the A-team on VHS for old times’ sake…. “You spend too much time on that Daddy”…. The immortal words from the mouth of my youngest son. Unfortunately, he wasn’t referring to my heroics on the running machine, my commitment to The Times crossword, or my dedication with the hedge-trimmer. He was, of course, commenting on my mobile phone usage. On reflection, it was hard to explain the importance of watching a viral video of people slipping over outside their homes captured via their smart doorbells. I do sometimes thank my lucky stars that my formative years were during the 80s and 90s. Not only did we have Fun House, Knight Rider and The X-Files but we could do all the same stupid things as the “Gen Z’s” of today and there was absolutely no record of it anywhere!

The Great Big Green Week is run nationally by a group of charities and businesses including the Women’s Institute, WWF (Worldwide Fund for Nature) the RSPB and even Manchester United OurFC. local sustainability group, Sustainable Henfield 2030 is working with other local partners to offer a programme of events in the village so that we can be part of this special week –which seems even more important after our summer of heatwaves and during the energy crisis.

This year in Henfield we are planning a Cost Free and Pollution Free Bus Trip on Sunday 2 October to highlight the need for Henfield’s public transport options to be improved. Booking details will follow soon. We plan to show an uplifting film about our nearest coastline called Sussex Underwater at Henfield Hall and there will also be an event on saving energy and reducing our gas and electricity bills at the same time.

B etween 24 September and 2 October 2022 Henfield will have a week of special activities and events as part of the UK’s biggest every celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

For those who like practical action we will be arranging some local conservation events including planting more seeds in our wildflower verges and we hope to offer another local walk to appreciate our amazing natural surroundings.

There will be more details of this year’s events nearer the time on the Sustainable Henfield 2030’s website and social media, and listings will also be on the Great Big Green Week’s website. We hope there will be something for everyone… and everyone’s invited! Gill Perry

Last year Henfield had a very successful programme including a keynote talk in Henfield Hall with Tony Whitbread, conservation work parties where our Henfield Crocus Ribbon was planted, an online showing of the film ‘2040’, two walks near the village, a litter pick and a local ‘Give Your Stuff Away Day’ to encourage everyone to pass on things they no longer need (but cannot sell) to someone else who might want them. All of these events highlighted local practical action to reduce the climate and nature crises we all face.

These clients say they like being able to control how long visits last, that it’s usually cheaper than going through an agency and the arrangement provides consistency to the person being cared for.

• that you ought to carry out background checks via the Disclosure and Barring Service and obtain references? The person needing care may well be ‘at risk’ and so you need to have significant trust in your choice of carer.

Richard Bates, Henfield resident and consultant solicitor at Cognitive Law in Brighton, comments on how it’s easy to trip up when organising care at home.

I am not necessarily suggesting that clients do not directly employ carers. However, as the above points demonstrate, these are not simply informal arrangements; they can have far reaching consequences for the employer and the person being cared for. Clients can be caught out under employment, taxation and health and safety laws and even commit criminal offences, simply due to their being ignorant of their Oneduties.should consider if it’s a false economy paying less and organising things yourself. Good care providers put a huge amount of work into ensuring they provide safe and appropriate care with good service levels, and you get what you pay for!

• that you should ensure that the carer has their own insurance cover to an appropriate level?

However, these agreements are usually informal, often cash in hand. My advice is to think very carefully about whether to go down the route of directly employing a carer. For instance, have you considered:-

• that you need to understand the carer’s training requirements, such as moving and handling techniques or safeguarding?

• if you are meeting your duties under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, when arranging care as an attorney?

More and more of my clients are now directly employing carers for their or their loved one’s care because they prefer this arrangement rather than, say, relying on the local authority or an agency to assist them.

• the need for employer’s liability insurance, and that your existing buildings insurer may not consent to your being an employer from home?

If you need assistance in understanding the options and your duties, please get in touch on 07866 547366 or richard.bates@cognitivelaw.co.uk.

• that you will have to register with HMRC as an employer, operate PAYE and pay National Insurance & statutory sick pay (SSP) AND make pension contributions to the carer?

• that you need to have a fully compliant and workable Care Plan, including risk assessments, and a means of monitoring/spot checking the care accordingly?

You can also find out more at www.cognitivelaw.co.uk.

• that you ought to have a properly prepared employment contract? Or that your employee has rights (perhaps enforceable against you personally) under UK employment law?

SEPTEMBER 2022 | Local interest 01273 494002 BN5 Magazine | 45 I f you want fun and exercise and good company join us at Henfield Leisure Centre every Thursday morning at 10.30am for our Circle Dance session. We are a friendly group of ladies who enjoy enacting one of the oldest forms of community dancing. Our group has been meeting for over 20 years in Henfield and has given our dancers a great deal of enjoyment and fulfilment over that time. It benefits the mind, the body and nurtures the soul. Circle dancing is inclusive and welcoming for ladies and gentlemen of all ages. It is light to moderate rhythmical exercise, good for the memory and co-ordination, meaningful and uplifting. It broadens our understanding of different cultures through music and dance, and most of all, circle dancing is a wonderful way to have fun and make friends. Many forms of social dance require agility and stamina which can exclude many people. Fortunately circle dancing is very versatile and adaptable. For every energetic dance there is a gentle one to follow. The origins of circle dance are lost in the mists of time. Being probably the oldest known dance, circle dancing is an ancient tradition common to many cultures for making special occasions, rituals, strengthening community and encouraging togetherness. Modern circle dance mixes traditional folk dances, mainly from European or Near Eastern countries, with recently choreographed ones to a variety of music both

“I have been dancing for 16 years, it’s great fun, great choreography and keeps the mind active.”

“Fun and exercise and good company. I enjoy the music and being with people who feel likewise.”

“It has brought a lot of laughter and fun into my life. I adore the music and it’s good for the mind and body. It is a great social group of ladies, we all make mistakes sometimes, but, that’s the fun

ancient and modern. In many cultures it has been traditional to have a small floral display within the centre of the circle. This helps the circle to retain its shape and pays homage to its beginnings.

“I’ve found it therapeutic, I think the dancing makes you more mindful, you’re living in the moment. It is good for mental health, and is very “uplifting.”Ilovethe joy of dancing with inspirational music from all around the world.”

Some of the comments that have been expressed from our ladies, as to what circle dancing means to them are as follows:-

“I started when my son died and found it was good for me, meeting people, and it helped me over my grieving and got me out of the house.”

Therebit.” is a cost of £5 per session to cover the cost of the room. Any surplus at the end of the year we donate to charity. Your first session is free. Elle Pond-Barrett

It is a sad fact of life that tax affects everyone –and age does not exempt children from paying tax. Even babies are liable if they have enough income! Children and Personal Allowances Like adults, children are allowed to ‘earn’ a certain amount each year tax free. Their Personal Allowance for 2022/23 is £12,570, the same as adults. They will only pay tax if their income exceeds £12,570 in the Tax Year to 5 April 2023. Children don’t have earnings as such of course, so their allowance is applied to their income from other sources, such as savings and investment Ifincome.thereturn they get on their savings and investments is less than the Personal Allowance, they do not have to pay tax. Tax Credits Tax credits don’t reduce the amount of tax you pay; instead they are means-tested benefits designed to provide extra money for people bringing up children, workers with a disability or workers on lower incomes. They are separate from Child Benefit, upon which you may have to pay a tax charge if you or your partner’s income exceeds £50,000. Make sure your children can earn tax-free To make sure your children don’t pay tax unnecessarily, you should complete HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) form R85 when you open an account in their name. If you haven’t done this and your child is paying tax for which they are not liable, you can reclaim it by completing form R40. You can get an R85 direct from your bank or building society. Alternatively, both forms are available on the HMRC website, Bewww.hmrc.gov.ukaware,though, that if you give your children money and it earns more than £100 a year before tax in interest (or £200 if both parents give money), all this income (not just the income How the tax regime affects families and how you can boost your children’s savings… over £100) will be taxed as if it were your own. The £100 limit applies to income from gifts from parents only, not from other family members. If income from your gift is likely to breach the £100 limit, then you should put your gifts in a taxfree investment. This can include a Junior ISA. The 2022/23 annual limit is £9,000.
