Change is AFOOT at DB Foot Clinic

I have been with DB Foot Clinic since 2013, where I rented a room to offer osteopathic healthcare under my own business name of South Downs Osteopathy. Since then I have seen both businesses go from strength to strength and have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the DB Foot Clinic family. When former owner David announced he was retiring last year I jumped at the chance of taking on the clinic myself and merging it with South Downs Osteopathy to create a truly multidisciplinary practice. To better reflect this, I decided it was time for a name change and a face-lift. So on 1st September we bade a fond farewell to the DB Foot Clinic name and an enthusiastic welcome to our new-look South Downs Clinic!

Our clients can expect the same friendly, professional service, whether you are visiting us for foot care from our podiatrists or for some hands-on treatment from our osteopaths. All of our practitioners are fully registered and insured, and undergo continuous training to keep their skills and knowledge up to date. Our lovely reception team will be sure to offer you a warm welcome on arrival.

Podiatry

Our podiatrists, Karen and Lauren, offer general chiropody services such as nail cutting, corn and callus removal, alongside

more specialist services such as verruca treatment, fungal foot/nail treatment, diabetic foot care, biomechanical assessment, orthotic fitting and nail surgery.

Osteopathy

Our osteopaths, Amber and myself, can help with all manner of physical ailments, such as back pain, neck pain, joint pain, muscle pain, tension headaches, pain related to wear and tear, sporting/occupational injuries and postural issues.

Working together for you

Sometimes issues with the feet can affect posture and function in the rest of the body, and vice versa. Our practitioners can work closely together to help you achieve the best possible outcome. Our reception team can often advise the best person to book with in the first instance, if you are unsure what help you need.

New offerings

Finally, I am pleased to announce some new services available at the clinic on Saturdays: ear wax microsuction with Patricia and hypnotherapy with Margaret. Appointments are bookable directly with the practitioners; please check our website or ask at reception for their contact details.

Visit us

You can find us directly opposite the Coopers Way car park (behind Sainsbury’s), on the corner of Brick Lane. We look forward to welcoming you to South Downs Clinic! Ross Skilton, clinic owner.

For more information or to book an appointment, please visit the clinic, give us a call or visit our website.

Editor’s Letter

Welcome to the October issue of BN5.

This month we’re focussing on younger Henfield residents and families, with a four-page guide to October Half-Term Events, as well as local Firework Nights.

Hopefully you can gain some ideas & inspiration; we haven’t managed to capture every single event but we’ve certainly published all the ones we’ve managed to find out about! You’ll find a section on local events (many of them low cost or free) and some slightly further-afield.

We’ll add all these events to our website under a dedicated heading in Events titled ‘Half-Term’ - so, if we hear of more, we’ll make sure they’re added. You’ll also find more extensive information for each event including online booking links.

Please do save www.henfieldbn5.co.uk as a favourite in your browser, we do our best to add all the local events we know about (as well as businesses and clubs and groups) - but there’s space for more, so let us know if you’re part of a group holding an event or a business looking to promote yourself locally.

Best wishes

Karyn Bailey 1953-2024

It is with the deepest sorrow I must that tell you my beloved wife Karyn passed away on 26th August.

She loved Henfield and knew many of you as her friends. Not least at the Henfield Haven, where as a volunteer she so valued and enjoyed working with the older people. Indeed, it was Karyn whose compassion and determination inspired the community in 2014 to save the old Council Day Centre from closure and turn it into today’s wonderful Haven.

Karyn had fought serious medical issues against the odds for many years. We had perhaps begun to think of her as invincible. When the end came, it was a mercifully short illness. She died peacefully in Worthing Hospital with her family around her.

Karyn was always so grateful for the care she received from Henfield Medical Centre and her doctor Karen Crawford-Clarke. Without them her rich life would have been even shorter.

Karyn dedicated her life to helping others, nowhere more so than at the Henfield Haven, where she thought of the staff, volunteers and customers as an extended family.

Her funeral service will be held at The Downs Crematorium, Bear Road, Brighton starting at 11.30am on Tuesday 1st October. It will be followed by a reception at the Henfield Haven. The service will also be available to watch online. Full information and a tribute to Karyn is available online at https://karyn-bailey.muchloved.com or from the family.

A very big thank you to everyone who uses the scheme, and particularly to St Peter’s School and Goodness Café for collecting. The scheme accepts pens, refills, felt tips, mechanical pencils, markers, highlighters and correction fluid bottles, tapes and pens.

Sustainable Henfield is also celebrating a major milestone – £40,000 raised over the last four years for local children’s causes from the sale of unwanted items on eBay. The money supports St Peter’s School, Henfield Youth Club, Bump to Baby Plus and the Henfield Scout Group building appeal. We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to all those who have donated goods to us, and to the dedicated volunteers who create the online listings.

If you are having a clear-out or just want to get rid of something you don’t use, please get in touch and help us raise the next £10,000. We sell anything in clean working condition: home and garden equipment, bikes, cameras, tools, ornaments and furniture. We use specialist volunteers to clean computers before selling, so your data is safe. We can also help people who are moving house to sell their unwanted items. Organisers required for Charities Christmas Fair

The Charities Christmas Fair has been running in Henfield for over 30 years and I have been privileged to be the organiser for the past six. After the 2024 Fair in November, I need to stand down due to ill health, so I am looking for a volunteer or a group of two or three, to take over the role for the 2025 Fair onwards. Computer skills are essential as is a printer. The work involved is possibly about 40 hours, spread over 4 or 5 months.

If you are interested and would like to know more, please do not hesitate to contact me either by phone on 01273 492289 or by email at charitieschristmasfair@outlook.com

Wendy Cairn’s Art at Henfield Club

Local artist Wendy passed away earlier this year. A small selection of her later work is to be exhibited at the Henfield Club Committee Room.

Wendy was a life-long member of the Henfield Art Club, serving in our committee and active in all our activities, including the annual exhibitions. She was incredibly gifted with the ability to draw complex facades of buildings, flowers and more. She challenged herself to explore styles, colour and compositions for the pure enjoyment of the process.

One of her works will also be available in Henfield St Barnabas Charity Shop and donations to St Barnabas on purchasing or viewing will be accepted.

Did you know…? HART defibrillators

There are several defibrillators located throughout the village, but how many people know how to use them, should the need ever arise? In a bid to resolve this potential problem and raise awareness, the HART First Responders are running a one-off Basic Life Support (BLS) training session, which will include hands-on defibrillator use, in St Peter’s Church Hall on Saturday, 12th October from 2-3.30pm.

Everyone is welcome and it’s free to attend, we would appreciate an email to nigelhigson@ hotmail.co.uk in advance so we have space for everyone.

Exciting news from Henfield Medical Centre

We’re thrilled to be introducing our new booking system very soon, which aims to put you in greater control of your healthcare journey.

With Rapid Health you can skip the morning rush, book your own GP appointments with no need to speak to reception, and make admin requests. Rapid Health will replace our existing online system on our website, with some useful improvements. If you are not already using it, please download the NHS App, where you can view results, order medication & much more.

Rapid Health’s AI driven system ensures speedy triage. You will answer a few quick questions online (the same questions will be asked by reception if you call). You’ll then either be offered and appointment or flagged for attention from our dedicated team of Doctors and Advance Nurse Practitioners.

To find out more, go to our website and search Rapid Health, you’ll find a video guide explaining more. Telephone appointments and face-to-face reception at HMC will remain the same, so please don’t worry if you don’t have internet access.

Morven Banks

Henfield Garden Club

On the Friday 9th August 2024 we held our Summer Supper in the Garden Club Chairlady’s wonderful garden. Present at the supper was Morfudd Paul, who was presented an award in recognition for her contribution to horticulture by the Royal Horticulture Society. Morfudd was one of those responsible for setting up the HGC some 23 years ago and has been a constant supporter during this time.

Our speaker for October is the Head Gardener of Hever Castle, Neil Miller, who is celebrating 20 years in the role. He will be giving us an insight into the day-to-day life of Hever Castle Gardens.

Henfield Youth Club

The new academic year got off to a great start last month, bringing new faces through the door and some exciting changes at Youth Club too!

Sarah is now offering pre-ordered hot food at our Juniors sessions on Tuesdays. For just £8.50 our young people can both be entertained at Youth Club from 6-7.30pm, as well as be fed, saving you the mad rush of dinner at home! Please do make sure you drop us an email or social media message to let us know you’d like to book a meal, henfieldyouthclub@tiscali.co.uk. Although this won’t currently be on offer for our seniors, our hot café food will be available for our 13 and overs at our Poppin’ Café on Friday nights. We’ve also welcomed back our SEN evenings which we’ve renamed Quiet Night. An evening for those who find the regular hustle and bustle of Youth Club a bit too much. This will be running on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Around our quiet nights, we will be running different half-termly project nights for the young people. Last month we kicked off with our LINK night; an evening for young people who don’t attend school on a regular basis. We aim to bridge the gap between home and school for the young people, offering them our time, support and a listening ear. This will run until October half term.

St Barnabas thanks Wickwoods Discodayz!

It was sequins, spangles and disco fever at the Discodayz event held recently at Wickwoods Club! The event was the brainchild of Zumba instructor Loz Latham, who got the disco divas strutting their stuff to a non-stop 70’s playlist, all in aid of St Barnabas House Hospice.

The event included a mocktail bar, cake sale and raffle. Over £550 was donated to St Barnabas Hospice in proceeds. Henfield Friends of St Barnabas were on hand to help, and to thank Loz and his Team for a fantastic afternoon of funky fun.

Henfield Friends of St Barnabas are holding their popular Christmas Concert on Saturday December 7th, 6.30-9pm. We hope that many if you will be able to join us for a sing-a-long and some family fun. We depend on your kind support during this event, our major fundraiser.

The plight of Hospices has made headline news recently, as many are suffering from reduced staff and are closing beds which they simply cannot afford. Two thirds of Hospice income is solely from fundraising. They need us more than ever. If you would like to help with the concert or support the Friends in any way, please get in touch.

Rushfields celebrates 40 years

The team at Rushfields celebrated in style on 31st August at their Flower & Produce Show, which saw over 100 entries of trugs of vegetables, homegrown and cut flowers, children’s crafts, preserves and bakes. The day was officially opened with Allison Ferns from BBC Radio Sussex cutting the ribbon, and it culminated in a party and hog-roast for staff, customers and friends.

We’re pleased to say that fellow local business owners Kieran and Emily Berrett won Best in Show! The day was a huge success, long-time customer Betty took on the task of sampling and judging the baking entries, ably assisted by Colin Langridge from Rushfields, himself an awardwinning pie-maker.

Rushfields was built, brick by brick and greenhouse by greenhouse, by brother and sister team Colin Langridge and Kathryn Hillman and

their spouses Pam and Adrian, starting in 1984. Over the years they’ve employed dozens of local people, supported hundreds of other local growers, farmers and producers, and served Henfield and the surrounding area with a firstclass garden centre and farm shop.

At BN5 we are very aware of the kindness and generosity of these four individuals, who are always supportive of local charities, events and community groups, as well as making huge fundraising efforts for many good causes. Their projects and supported charities are too numerous to mention, but all are grateful for their unwavering support.

The team at Rushfields really are a family, they were thrilled to see Louise, one of their earliest apprentices, entering their flower show. Since learning her skills at Rushfields she’s worked 16 years in horticulture. The next generation of Langridges are continuing the tradition, with Henry hard at work as a Rushfields chef, and husband and wife Alice and Sam working hard in the business too.

Thank you and congratulations to them all, for their incredible service to our community over the last 40 years, for their hard work and dedication.

St. Peter’s CE Primary School Open Days

Henfield Rainbows Need You

After 17 years of being a helper and then running 2nd Henfield Rainbows, Barbara has decided it is time to retire.

If we are not successful finding new volunteers, the unit will close at Christmas. This means the current Rainbows will no longer be able to be part of this great organisation, seeing their friends, trying new things and having fun.

Rainbows are aged 4-7 and meet on a Monday. Can you spare us 90 minutes a week during term time? Some additional time will be needed for training at the start, but most of it can be done online at a time that suits you. You will have all the support you need to learn what Rainbows do and Girlguiding provide meeting ideas for you to follow.

To find out more about how you can help us, please register on the Girlguiding website and we will be in touch.

A big ‘thank you’ to Chris and the Hamfelds team

Shopping locally is so important, one of the reasons is the sense of community and kindness shown by our local shop owners and their staff. We were thrilled to receive this lovely email from

Lesley, but not at all surprised; going ‘above and beyond’ seems to be a Henfield trait!

“My friend Jenny and I visited Hamfelds Hardware store to have some keys cut, we live in Steyning and Hamfelds was recommended to us by a Shoreham locksmith as the ‘best in the area’.

Unfortunately, Jenny collapsed just as we stepped over the threshold, hitting her head on the way down, and spent the next almost three hours waiting for an ambulance.

Chris and his assistant were amazing, alongside a customer and a First Responder they looked after Jenny until the ambulance arrived. They could not have been more helpful and caring.

Jenny was taken to Worthing Hospital, and we are pleased to say she is now back home and is making a good recovery, sporting rather interesting headwear!

Thank you to all who helped, especially Chris for your concern and much appreciated help. Lesley.”

Thank you to Lesley for taking the time to let us know about the care given to her elderly friend at Hamfelds, and to Chris, his staff and the local customers who helped to make sure Jenny was safe. We’re pleased to hear that Jenny is on the road to a full recovery.

Number 17 bus changes

There was positive news in September with huge improvements in the bus timetable for Henfield, specifically the Henfield to Brighton route which has seen a return to pre-covid halfhour frequency and the much-requested hourly Sunday service reinstatement. This is due in no small part to pressure from local residents, Sustainable Henfield 2030, Henfield Parish Council and our local councillors at Horsham District and West Sussex County Council, a huge thank you to all of them for their efforts.

It’s not good news for everyone, particularly the residents of neighbouring Partridge Green, who have seen a vastly diminished service due to the timetabling changes by Stagecoach. As a result of the changes, they now have no direct service to Horsham between the hours of 9.30am and 7.45pm. Instead, passengers are required to take a journey in the opposite direction to Henfield High Street to change buses (within a narrow changeover window), which adds time and complications.

For many Partridge Green and Littleworth residents reliant on buses, sometimes elderly or with limited mobility or young people getting to school or college, this is a real blow. At BN5 we have received multiple emails from residents who expressed their dismay, one disabled gentleman

expressed that the non-direct route was timeconsuming, stressful and potentially dangerous for him on his mobility vehicle.

As we go to print, the Change.org campaign to reinstate a reasonable service for this very rural community is in full-force. It currently has 1,263 signatures. Please support your Partridge Green neighbours by adding your voice to their campaign by going to Change.org and searching ‘Stagecoach No. 17 Partridge Green’.

Horsham District Councillor for Henfield Ward, Cllr. Gill Perry, said: “It’s a shame that the very positive news for Henfield hasn’t been echoed for Partridge Green, and we fully support their campaign for a direct service. However, I would like to encourage local Henfield residents to use this vastly improved service, which now runs late enough to Brighton and back to enjoy nights out, it really will be life-changing for many who have been isolated, especially our younger people. It really is a case of ‘use it or lose it’ – so please enjoy the freedom of the bus and use it as much as you can!”

West Sussex County Councillor, Cllr Sarah Payne, who has been a persistent campaigner for the improved number 17 service, welcomed the Henfield improvements but said: “I am bitterly disappointed with how Stagecoach has let down Partridge Green residents, I’m asking all residents to add their name to the online petition as it will help us to put pressure on Stagecoach to bring back some kind of service during the day.”

Pensions Credit

Horsham District Council is encouraging its residents of state pension age to check whether they could claim Pension Credit, which is worth over £3,500 a year on average.

From this autumn, those not claiming Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits will no longer get the annual winter fuel payments, currently worth between £100 and £300.

Seed Time!

Now that autumn is fast approaching, this is the perfect time to be out in the garden or the hedgerows collecting seeds. They are best collected on a dry day and once they have dried out thoroughly in the house, put them into separate envelopes clearly marked with what they are, when they were collected and if you have room, a tiny bit of information about them.

Seeds will need to be kept somewhere cool and dry over winter and then they will be ready for the Henfield Seed Swap next February! Then you will be ready for whatever the next year may throw at us, weather-wise!

VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR SUSTAINABLE HENFIELD

Can you help us and give something back to Henfield?

Sustainable Henfield works to promote climate change reduction and environment friendly initiatives in our village. We are a very successful group but we would like to do much more – and to do that we need volunteers to help with our projects including energy projects, transport and social media. We would love to hear from you if you are enthusiastic about sustainable transport solutions such as buses, electric cars and cycling; if you are interested in energy saving, renewables etc; or if you have experience in social media and can help promote our work on different platforms. We only need a few hours each week.

Please email us on info@sustainablehenfield.org if you are interested or would like to talk. www.sustainablehenfield.org

Some outdoor, some indoor and some low cost or even free! All information is correct at the time of going to print, but please do check online before travelling to any event (especially in the event of bad weather).

They will be eating lots of insects before hibernating over the winter. Walking around the lake, watch out for dragons! Dragonflies that is; look out for the blood-red Darters perching on fence posts. Fungi and mushrooms can be found all around the reserve. Many species have creepy names such as Witches’ Butter, Green Elf Cup or Blackening Brittlegill. Make sure you just look and don’t touch.

Follow the path into the dark woods with its shadowy branches. Look on the ground for fallen leaves; you might also find acorns and hazelnuts too. See if they have any teeth marks that show they have been nibbled by a squirrel. Deeper in the woods you can find the Woods Mill stone ruins and the stone knight, guarding Hoe Wood. www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/woodsmill

Under Pressure or Over Pressure?!?

My Blood Pressure (BP) certainly experienced some alarming fluctuations earlier this summer, when I was returning home at dusk after playing the opening cricket match of the season. As I approached my driveway, I was astonished to see two ponies standing unattended in the road. If I hadn’t been driving, I would have attributed this apparition to a couple of pints of strong cider, but given my sobriety, there was no denying that these equines were quite literally present “in the flesh”. My immediate concern was obviously the possibility of an accident on the road – and this was shared by another driver who pulled over coming from the opposite direction. The ponies were understandably a little skittish, with no headcollars or evidence of their origin – I suspect that their blood pressure – as well as mine – was probably well above normal, fuelled by some fight or flight adrenaline. Together, we managed to herd them off the road and into my driveway, after which I went across to a neighbour who had some stables to see if they were down a couple of occupants. Unfortunately they were unable to help and on return, there was no sign of the ponies or their temporary warden. Assuming that maybe their rightful owner had turned up, I headed to my house only to find that the ponies had progressed from driveway into my garden where they had found more bountiful fare in the form of our flower bed - cue another spike in BP! I suspect that my erstwhile helper had understandably seen the opportunity to relinquish his responsibility in favour of the home-owner and taken a quick exit!

Lacking any pony paraphernalia, I then spent the next 10 minutes trying to catch the ponies with DIY headcollars made from dog leads. The first was quite

easy to catch with an outstretched hand containing a dandelion leaf. The second was more wily and made a bolt back towards the road causing an alarming spike in my BP which certainly took it well above 120/80. Luckily my own fight or flight kicked in and I was able loop my dog lead around its neck and with the reassurance of something around its neck the pony was happy to be restrained. We were able to find a stable for the night (nativity style!) and the ponies were repatriated from where they had escaped the next day – crisis averted!

While my BP fluctuations were situational, persistently high blood pressure (hypertension) can cause insidious disease in pets as well as their human counterparts. Hypertension is more common in cats than dogs, with a recent study estimating 23% of cats over the age of 9 to be affected. Hypertension is often secondary to other conditions such as kidney disease, heart or thyroid disease, but can also be primary. The concern is that it is often not apparent until the condition has significantly progressed – often with serious consequences such as blindness caused by bleeding behind the eye, neurological signs if the brain is affected, or fainting, collapse and breathing issues if the heart is affected.

The good news is that there are lots of treatment options for hypertension and the best way to tackle it is to treat before any of the serious signs above occur. This means checking blood pressure in older / high risk cats routinely – as is the case in many doctors surgeries. This October we’re focusing on hypertension in cats and offering blood pressure checks with our nurses on any cat over 9 years for only £20. If your cat is on the Practice Health Plan, then the checks are FREE! If you have any further questions, or would like to book an appointment, then please contact us.

TheBeachBrightonBoys

The Brighton Beach Boys celebrate Henfield Hall 50th

Our wonderful Henfield Hall opened on 16 November 1974 and as part of a season of celebrations, the Brighton Beach Boys will return on Friday 4 October for a fantastic evening of live music.

The Brighton Beach Boys were founded over 20 years ago as a tribute band to the music of Brian Wilson. They are all professional musicians and have played with other international groups in towns and cities in the UK. They are regular artists at the Brighton Fringe Festival and perform many different genres of popular music including The Beatles, David Bowie and latterly, songs of

Burt Bacharach. This is their third visit to Henfield, after two previous sold-out concerts in 2019 and 2022, playing and singing popular music mostly from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

We are so lucky to have such a wonderful and spacious local amenity as The Henfield Hall. It’s run as a charity, not funded by the Parish Council, and as such requires considerable funds to keep it running smoothly and upgraded when necessary. So do please support your Hall and come and enjoy the atmosphere with local friends for an evening to remember.

There is unreserved seating for 200 and space to dance along with the music. The doors and bar open from 7pm. Tickets at £18 each are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/henfield-hall or from Stevens Estate Agents on the High Street.

Glow Wild returns with Enchanting World of Trees trail

Sussex’s award-winning festive lantern trail at Wakehurst, Kew’s wild botanic garden, returns with an immersive journey exploring the hidden world of trees on selected evenings from 28 November 2024 to 1 January 2025.

Be transported into the enchanting world of trees as Glow Wild returns for its eleventh year in 2024 at Wakehurst, Kew’s wild botanic garden in Sussex. One of the South East’s most celebrated festive events, this year the award-winning trail will be welcoming visitors on Christmas Eve for the first time in its history.

Inspired by the diverse collection of global trees nestled in Wakehurst’s botanic landscape, over 1000 hand-made lanterns, light animations, soundscapes, and bespoke artworks will create an immersive trail. These pieces, created by nine international artists and local community artisans, will bring trees and the vital role they play on our planet to dazzling life as darkness falls over Wakehurst.

The interactive trail will give visitors the chance to experience life high in the canopy of a grove of woven trees, explore a glistening filament network of tree roots underground, and stroll through an avenue of giant leaf chandeliers, marvelling at the magic of trees.

Visitors can glimpse a giant owl soaring over the glittering lawns, meet Wakehurst’s firedrenched mythical wood dragon, and peek inside the mystical world of miniature tree folk. For those seeking moments of peace, sit alongside illuminated figures in the Winter Garden, pause at serene lakeside reflections or gaze at whirling snowflakes dancing on the newly revealed Elizabethan Mansion facade. At the heart of the festive offering is Wakehurst’s iconic Redwood Christmas tree, a twinkling sentinel standing tall over the gardens and bedazzled with over 1,800 energy-saving bulbs.

To ensure the magic of Glow Wild is enjoyed by all, Wakehurst is increasing its accessible options. Children under four can attend for free, and all

visitors will have the flexibility to swap or upgrade their tickets for free up to a week before their visit.

Throughout Glow Wild, the first slot of the night is reserved as a Quiet Session, designed for visitors with disabilities and their essential companions who wish to enjoy the sensory elements of the trail in a more comfortable setting. Relaxed Sessions, adapted for those with special educational needs and disabilities, such as those with sensory processing needs, will be available on selected nights. Visitors will also be able to book exclusive late sessions for adults only, for those looking for a memorable evening with friends or a show-stopping date night.

Glow Wild visitors will be able to enjoy a variety of delicious catering options, including hearty hot food, festive drinks and hand-made marshmallows to toast around the fire under a sea of starry lanterns. Wakehurst’s gift shop, opening until late on Glow Wild evenings, provides the perfect opportunity to stock up on some last-minute Christmas shopping.

Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men discover medical phenomenon!

It has recently been found that many local men have two left feet! This alarming news was found by Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men from some casual research amongst men in the summer audiences. When asked whether they’d like to join in, or try Morris dancing, a common response was “Not me mate, I’ve got two left feet!” It is extraordinary that so many men admit to this and it must cause them an issue in shoe shops too.

Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men- or ‘Chancs’

- are inviting local men to a ‘Try It’ night on Wednesday 2nd October at 7.30pm, whether they have a proper pair of feet, or just two left feet. Squire Les said: “Our Try It night is at the Catholic Church Hall by the Tanyard in Henfield. We practice there from 8-10pm every Wednesday and then have ‘refreshments’ afterwards. Then in the summer, Wednesday nights are spent dancing at pubs around Sussex.”

Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men are a ‘Cotswold’ Morris dancing side with bells, sticks and handkerchiefs, based in central Sussex. By the first season dancing out ‘apprentices’ usually only need to know a few simple dances. “Of course,

we welcome musicians to join us too and men from any other Morris sides who fancy a change, or who have moved to the area” said Les. See more about CRMM at www.crmm.org.uk or simply email bagman@crmm.org.uk

Keeping up traditions...

Morris Dancing is all about the traditions it maintains as well as the social and fun side of the hobby. On First of May every year, Chancs dance at the top of Chanctonbury Ring, and if a weekend, go on to a day-tour.

Another tradition kept alive is ‘Apple Howling’ on Twelfth Night, also called wassailing, and Chancs’ is well known as the best!

Another local tradition is ‘tipteering’, a mummers play performed on Boxing Day, with St George, a dragon and a scary Turk, and usually gets a few hundred locals out to watch every year.

Business Structures

Once you have taken the decision to start a business, there are various legal structures you can choose. The most appropriate structure will depend on a combination of your commercial objectives; the degree of permanency required; as well as legal, accounting and tax considerations. Generally, businesses have preferred the following structures:

Business Structure

Partnership

You and your partners are individually self-employed for tax purposes, with profits allocated in profit sharing ratios.

Limited company

Limited companies are incorporated under Companies Act 2006. To form a limited company you need at least one shareholder and at least one director.

It is a requirement for companies to maintain a register with Companies House, including filing a Confirmation Statement with directors’ and shareholders’ details. Moore Kingston Smith can organise incorporation and maintain all the registers that a business needs.

Limited liability partnership

In broad terms, this is a cross between a partnership and a limited company.

You can organise your business and pay tax in exactly the same way as if you were an ordinary partnership.

Advantages

• Draw on talents of others

• Relatively unrestrictive

• National Insurance the same as a sole trader

• Not normally personally liable for company’s debts

• Enhanced business image

• Companies can claim Research & Development tax credits and a wide range of tax reliefs

• Normally set up in a matter of hours

• For VAT purposes, a limited company is not aggregated with other businesses, as are different businesses carried on by individuals

• Corporation Tax rates start at 19%

• Dividends can be paid to shareholders, potentially at a reduced tax rate.

Similar to partnership, but:

• Personal liability is limited unless responsible for partnership’s bankruptcy

• Greater flexibility on introducing or repaying capital

• The agreement between the members on sharing profit and managing the business etc. is a private document

The private limited company is the most common type of corporate entity. The liability of its members is limited to the issued Share Capital, which could be as low as £1. The company requires a registered office in the UK and at least one director for whom there is no residency requirement. Also, there is no longer a mandatory requirement for companies to appoint a company secretary. Every UK registered company is required to file accounts at Companies House, and

Disadvantages

• Share the profits and set up costs

• Jointly and severally liable for business debts

• Not in sole control

• More formal and restrictive

• Not normally allowed to borrow money from the company

• Accounts must be prepared in a statutory format and filed on public record with Companies House; they may have to be audited if you exceed the statutory audit thresholds.

• Potentially a double tax hit on profits made/extracted – Corporation Tax on profits and then either dividend tax charge or Capital Gains Tax on share sale.

Similar to partnership, but:

• Have to notify Companies House of the business address and the names of the partners

• Accounts must be on public record every year and they need to be audited if the statutory audit thresholds are exceeded

• All profits are taxed on the partners at rates of up to 45% plus National Insurance, so not as effective as a company if profits are retained in the LLP.

these become available for inspection by the public. A private limited company has to file accounts within nine months of its period end or become liable to automatic penalties. The accounts also need to be audited if certain large thresholds of turnover, gross assets and number of employees are exceeded.
