Wildflowers for Remembrance

Editor’s Letter

Welcome to the November 21 issue of BN5 magazine. We are pleased to be publishing an article this month on the work of the Henfield Baden Powell Guild, or as they’re more commonly known, the B-P Guild. Their name is a little misleading; they aren’t all ex-Scouts and they work for the benefit of the whole community, not just Scouting. They share many strong Scouting values, although we’re not entirely sure being skilled beer testers for local breweries is one of them! We’re highlighting all the things this brilliant bunch of blokes do for one important reason; to tempt you to join. They are a down-to-earth, generous, kind bunch and they’re not adverse to a joke or two. They could do with a bit more help and a few more guys to come along to help out, socialise and generally have a good time. Give it a go, we don’t think you’ll regret it. We are pleased that the Henfield Remembrance events are once again taking place in the village. Please take a look on page 23 for all the details. Please give generously to the Poppy Appeal this year, last year was a difficult year for this important charity. Best wishes

Commemorating our War Dead with Wildflowers

As we hold our Remembrance events to commemorate those who gave their lives in the two World Wars, it seems appropriate to tell readers about the wildflowers, including poppies, which have been sown in the northern extension to our Cemetery. The seeds for these were donated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), via Paul and Pauline McBride of the Sussex Prairie Gardens, see the article on page 22 for more detail. The seeds were grown on by volunteers and then planted out - the photographs show the flowers during August. Since then they have been allowed to set seed and the area mown. It is hoped that, with careful management, they will continue to produce a display from year to year. The Parish Council are committed to practices which will increase biodiversity and provide nectar and foodplants for bees and other insects. The northernmost end of the Cemetery extension already has flowering trees, snowdrops and cowslips, as well as wildflowers from the natural seedbank. Wildflowers have also been sown around the swale between the Cemetery and the Link Road to the Leisure Centre, and we are collaborating with WSCC to allow wildflowers to grow on our verges. We are now considering more tree planting in the centre of the village and are looking forward to the emergence next Spring of the ‘ribbon’ of crocuses which have been planted along London Road to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Fund a defibrillator

Every one of the many public access defibrillators sited around our villages has to be maintained. This costs on average £80 per defibrillator per year (replacement pads costs around £30 a set and last two or three years & a replacement battery costs around £300 and again lasts around three to four years depending on the make of instrument). Public donations have helped us maintain the many defibrillators meaning that they are ready for action when needed in an emergency. However a defibrillator is not a lot of use in an emergency if it is housed inside a building which closes at night! To alleviate this situation, wherever possible, HART is committed to move the defibrillators outside buildings in order to improve accessibility. Regrettably this will require the purchase and installation (including an electricity supply to a small internal heating element to protect the battery) of specialised protective external boxes which cost around £500 each. In some locations we will need to use solar-powered boxes which cost upwards of £2,400 If you are able to assist us by contributing to the For more news go to www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

NOVEMBER 2021 | News purchase of these boxes, we would be grateful for any donation. More importantly the defibrillator will be there and accessible when needed by you, your neighbour or your family. allowed me to travel again with my stories and recipes and share my love for global cuisine. This collection of 12 recipes captures the memory of this past crazy year, with the aim to use them to bring about some good. We all know that recovery is on the horizon but sadly this is not equitable, so, for each book sold I will donate £5 to fund a vaccine through the Vaccine Alliance who aim to reach the world’s most vulnerable people in these difficult times. Each book = 1 vaccine… a perfect & simple way to be part of the solution. And… my incredibly supportive and generous husband Chris will match donations for the first 100 books sold so those who get in quick can know they helped twice over! Fit For Good

Exercise is essential for living well into old age, but it’s not always easy to fit it into daily life. Fit For Good, a low impact, whole body fitness programme with professional trainers, which doesn’t require getting down on the floor, can help. And it’s fun. “Our aim is to make exercise for older adults more accessible, convenient and enjoyable, explains Fit For Good director Jordan Burns. “We want to help men and women over 60, of all abilities, gain strength, balance, flexibility and stamina.” Participants wear comfortable clothing they can move around in, no special gym wear or equipment is required, although light weights – which could be tinned food or water bottles - are recommended to help increase strength. Each session starts with a mobility warm up for the major joints and muscle groups. This is followed by a varying combination of cardiovascular work for heart health; strength work for improved bone density, joint and tissue health; functional movements for improving daily life; balance work for improving stability; and core work for building a strong trunk. The sessions end with a gentle cool down and age-appropriate stretching. For more information about Fit For Good in person, Zoom and online sessions, and to book places, please visit: www.FitForGood.com.

The Henfield Museum is housed in the Henfield Hall and Arts Society Henfield meets there every month so the Hall is home to both organisations and it seems natural we should support them. We are both slowly returning to normal and it seems an ideal opportunity for a new collaboration. Henfield High Street Christmas Shopping Evening

Rushfields Supper Club – booking now! Local chef Henry Langridge of the Rushfields family is excited to be launching his new venture, the Rushfields Supper Club, on Thursday 28 October. Henry is passionate about local produce and has utilised the very best from local farms and suppliers. His four-course menu is Sussex and seasonal through and through; with tempting dishes such as Grange Farm lamb with dauphinoise potatoes, and Sussex plum panna cotta with cinnamon crumble. Henry has teamed up with Giles from South Downs Cellars who has paired each course with some of his delicious wines, all matching beautifully with each course of the set menu. There are just 30 places available, but if you can’t make the date then watch out for future supper clubs because it’s set to be a regular occurrence. “A supper club is always something I have wanted to present,” said Henry, who has cooked at local restaurants such as the Ginger Fox and Horsted Place as well as the Tickled Pig in Wimborne and River Cottage in Devon. “I love the idea of creating the friendly and relaxed atmosphere of a family meal while extending the warm welcome of the Rushfields family to our customers and friends. Good food, good wine and good company – the perfect combination!” The Supper Club will take place in the Rushfields Café from 6.30pm and booking is essential. Tickets are £40pp including wine flight. Shine for Life at the Field of Dreams

You may have heard a little of what is being created in the West of the Village, just a stone’s throw from the river. Shine for Life is a not for profit, Community Interest Company, operating for 15 years around BN5. This summer we were delighted to find a haven to establish a Community Conservation Care Farm. Our philosophy is centred around the 8 Ways of Wellbeing concept: Connect, Give, Take Notice, Be Active, Keep Learning, Care for Self, Community and the Planet. Already the Field has produced a harvest of haylage for our expanding menagerie of animals, with surplus to sell. We are almost ready to plant a winter crop of veg, start making our own compost and adding diversity to support wildlife flora and fauna. We have welcomed some wonderful volunteers and are extremely grateful to those who have donated and given their time and experience so far. From mugs to luxury seating and a stunning handmade bench from Benchog.com to PHB Contractors and Sussex Police - thank you. NOVEMBER 2021 | News

Saskia’s Story

Many of you will know Becky Knight and her 21 year old daughter Saskia Grace Lane from Henfield. Saskia contracted Covid-19 while 34 weeks pregnant and became perilously ill with the virus at the end of August. She gave birth to her daughter and was put into an induced coma. The battle continues to bring Saskia back to full health, with the help of her family and the NHS who saved Saskia’s life, this journey is continuing slowly, but well. Little Betsy is doing well, both her and little Eliza need their mummy home soon. Becky has a mission to raise awareness of the hideous damage Covid-19 can do, her words are below: “I’m sharing this to let you see how poorly my daughter Saskia Grace Lane was and how important it is to get the Covid-19 vaccination. No family should have to go through what we have just been through. The NHS saved her, she had an extended spell on an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine at St. Thomas’s hospital, which was the very last resort. I watched my daughter and spoke to her via video link for over three weeks, she was in a coma and it was desperately hard to see. Please, please don’t think it won’t happen to you. “Saskia was unsure about getting the vaccination due to being pregnant with her second baby.

01273 494002

Because she had suffered diabetes in her first pregnancy, she was offered the vaccine very early, but midwives were hesitant at the time due to lack of evidence. As advice became clearer, she decided to be vaccinated, but sadly she went on to contract Covid-19, testing positive just the day after her first vaccination. “The illness took hold, she struggled to breathe and she was admitted to A&E. As she grew progressively more ill, doctors decided that an emergency C-Section was necessary and little Betsy was born at 35 weeks. After giving birth she didn’t wake up. She remained at Hayward’s Heath Hospital very poorly, in an induced coma and on a ventilator, then was later transferred to St Thomas’s for the most advanced treatment available. “Betsy remained isolated in the Special Care Baby Unit in Hayward’s Heath for five days before we could see her or hold her. Saskia’s partner Lee was full time looking after their other daughter, Eliza, and we relied on our family and friends to support us. My daughter continued to fight for her life. “After 3 weeks of induced coma, Saskia was removed from ECMO and was transferred back to Princess Royal, Hayward’s Heath. Finally, she started to wake, and after five long weeks we got to see her. It was an incredible moment. “Saskia is still in intensive care, poorly but stable, awake and alive. She currently has a tracheotomy so can’t speak and a drain in her punctured lung, she had contracted sepsis. She needs a ventilator still to help her breathe due to the damage left on her lungs. “We now know that life is so very precious. Covid is hitting our very youngest, so please get vaccinated, it may save your life or someone you love. Saskia got the last available ECMO bed. With the NHS under strain, lives are being lost. “We are indebted to the incredible doctors, nurses and NHS staff who have saved Saskia’s life. Thank you to everyone in Henfield who gave us such incredible support.”

Remembering through wildflowers

W

ith Henfield’s traditional remembrance commemorations getting back to nearnormal, this year the village has also introduced a wildlife friendly way of remembering our war dead. The Henfield Parish Council wildflower initiative (see Cllr Jane Jones’s news item on page 8) is a partnership project which will continue to grow and flourish year on year – literally! Here two of the individuals who helped make it happen tell us how they got involved. David Richardson, Director of Horticulture, Commonwealth War Graves Commission “The CWG Foundation has had a project distributing wildflower seeds for the public to sow and grow and I mentioned this to my long-time friends Paul and Pauline McBride of Sussex Prairies. Pauline then connected me with the folk in Henfield who took up the project and planted the wildflower seeds in the cemetery. It takes some management and the annual planting of seeds provides a blast of colour but the creation of a meadow takes more work and some time to reduce the competition from grass and to add species interest. Cutting down or mowing is a definite plus and the addition of more species, 22 | BN5 Magazine

and flowering plants for pollinators is a way of helping. The CWGC is one of the world’s largest gardening organisations with commitment in over 150 countries and in every continent (other than Antarctica). The challenge of our gardening is therefore global and the work in the UK is perhaps less well known. However, there are war graves in thousands of churchyards and cemeteries all over the UK. Usually these are the distinctive creamy coloured Portland stone headstones and when there are a group of graves we try to add decorative planting. When the cemeteries were created, the thinking behind them was to make something that looked a little like home. The influence of the architect Edwin Lutyens and horticulturalist Gertrude Jekyll on the design of the cemeteries is well documented. Although Jekyll’s plans weren’t implemented, her influence in the planting is still seen; flowing borders of colour, repetition of the planting to give rhythm and where possible the planting of roses, the main flowering plant. The beautiful garden cemeteries are places of calm and solace and have a very special sense www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

NOVEMBER 2021 | Local interest of place; the single graves in churchyards are often visibly nestled in less formal planting. Both are special in terms of commemoration and remembering those who gave their lives. As an organisation we are becoming more conscious of the environment and sustainability and are eliminating the use of chemicals in our gardening work. We are now accepting of weeds in grass, despite our reputation for immaculate lawns! We are also now including meadow planting and areas where we let the lawns grow. This can be useful in both reducing the mowing task but also create a hub of wildflowers and wildlife. There is definitely a mood to soften the planting, not to reduce care but to be a little less formal.” Pauline McBride, Sussex Prairie Garden “We became involved in the project through our connection with our friend David at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. David came to visit us and brought us some packets of CWGC wildflower seeds. We then became aware of some new possible planting schemes in Henfield which might benefit from the seeds and so a connection between us, the CWGC and Henfield was born! Paul and I met whilst both working for the CWGC in France. Paul was working in the mobile garden group which was responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of cemeteries in and around the village of Peronne in the Somme area of France. My role in the France Area CWGC office was to settle-in all staff coming out to France to live. This ranged from ensuring all the necessary paperwork was completed at the local town hall, to finding them accommodation, settling their kids into local schools and making sure their tv’s and washing machines worked - a fixer extraordinaire! In 1989 on the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution we stood on our first date on the Champs-Élysées in Paris amongst crowds numbered in the hundreds of thousands, with the French Air Force streaming overhead with thrilling smoking flares and we vowed that together we would start a garden which would burn down the barricades – literally! At Sussex Prairies we have tried to create a welcoming and accessible garden space which offers both stimulation and a sense of wellbeing and inclusion to all of those working in it, with it and visiting it. And now our involvement in the wildflower project is continuing in a wider sense through our new venture; a proposed wildflower meadow at Sussex Prairies - watch this space!” For more information on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission see www.cwgc.org . Sussex Prairies is now closed for the winter months, please see their website www. sussexprairies.co.uk for details of their opening times, events and courses next year.

H

eld in glorious sunshine on Sunday 5 September, Ashurst Fair & Fun Dog Show was a huge success, raising over £6,200 for Ashurst Village Hall. The return of the fair, after the long Covid pandemic lockdowns, was welcomed by everyone with families meeting together and having a great afternoon of fun in our beautiful Sussex countryside. Ashurst Recreation Ground was packed with happy visitors and dogs of all shapes and sizes. The main attraction of the day was the dog show ring with classes ranging from best puppy, best large dog, best small dog and dog most like its owner, to best child handler. Classes were judged by local vets Annalise and Jonathan Underwood together with Lucy Eaton from Hawthorn Veterinary Surgery. Braving the heat, the judges made a wonderful job of selecting winners from the numerous dogs entered into each class and prizes were sponsored by Gatleys feed merchants and

local residents. There were cups and rosettes presented throughout the afternoon, and all first prize winners went through to the Grand Championship at the end of the afternoon. The overall Grand Champion of Ashurst being was presented with a cup, championship rosette and dog treat prizes. As well as the dog show ring, there were many interesting stalls, cakes, teas, barbecue and the very popular bar and Pimms bar. There were even two visiting donkeys who enjoyed lots of attention throughout the show. A big thank you to all who kindly donated the prizes to the now famous Silent Auction Money raised goes towards Ashurst Village Hall. This very popular venue has gone from strength to strength since the new building was first opened in 2013. THE GUILD GIVES BACK T

here are different reasons why people join the Henfield BP Guild: some people are looking to do something a bit different with their lives; others see it as a good way of meeting new people, especially if they are new to the village. Whatever their initial reasons for joining, all members agree that they get a lot of fun out of it, as well as the satisfaction of helping others. The annual BP Guild fundraising activities are very much a fun and high profile part of village life. If you have ever visited a village event in the warmer summer months then chances are you have come across the legendry marquee erecting, BBQ catering and beer-pulling skills of the BP Guild! From the biennial village summer fair, walks for charity and sporting events, there isn’t much that the Guild haven’t covered in terms of village, providing a cheerful and professional service as well as raising money. In the winter months the Guild members use their close contacts with Father Christmas to take him on a tour of the village on his musical sleigh and delivering presents on Christmas morning. Then there’s the BP Guild jumble sales, where villagers can donate 30 | BN5 Magazine

their unwanted quality clutter as well as picking up a bargain and a delicious cake! All this fundraising activity brings in anything from £10,000 to £15,000 in charitable donations a year from the generosity of local residents. This is then discretely distributed back out to the local community and anyone in the village can put in a request to the BP Guild for assistance. The Guild facilitates smaller donations through its ‘Guild Gives Back’ scheme which enables smaller amounts to be transferred quickly, whilst larger donations are approved by a membership vote. The BP Guild recently helped out the Warren Playgroup who were facing a large bill to replace their outdoor equipment storage. They approached the BP Guild to see if they could help them and on assessing the situation, the Guild members realised that they had the skills to securely replace the leaky roof themselves, providing a much cheaper and more sustainable solution with just a few hours work! Another fortunate recipient this year has been the Henfield Haven who benefited from the funds raised by a particularly successful barbeque and bar hosted www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

An annual village event that the BP Guild organises is the Senior Citizens Outing which takes place at the end of the summer. Older residents are invited to take part in a day trip by coach to a popular local tourist destination, followed by a slap-up meal, a glass of something ‘medicinal’ and entertainment back in the village hall. Whilst this year the event had to be scaled back to just an afternoon tea due uncertainty earlier in the year, they hope to be back bigger and better next year! The Henfield BP Guild is on the lookout for new members. INTRODUCING HENFIELD’S NEW SPORTS BAR

The George, Henfield’s beautiful 16th Century coaching inn, is steeped in local history. This wonderful building now has a new lease of life, and staff are ready to welcome back old customers and meet new ones, too. It is under new management with a young and enthusiastic team of professionals ready to welcome you. The emphasis is on creating warmth, friendliness and a great place to meet up for a drink, some food and a fantastic night out. A great pint, excellent cocktails, good food, entertainment and great friends – a winning combination!

The past few months have been difficult for the hospitality business, but the George have used this ‘break’ to create a new style of welcoming pub, going back to their roots with some exciting modern twists. The George’s new look is in the sports bar tradition, creating a great venue for the latest world-class sport and the exciting atmosphere that goes along with sharing magical sporting moments with a group of friends. It’s what everyone has missed these past few months, getting together and sharing experiences with friends. They now have large screens showing Sky Sports, BT Sports and the racing channels together with a full-sized pool table and a real juke box playing some brilliant music! This last month the George trialed their new-look and customers are really appreciative. Regulars are enjoying the buzzing atmosphere and friendly, relaxed feel. New proprietor Steve Stevens, who is the energy behind the new ideas and new-look pub, commented: “I have 25 years’ experience in the hospitality industry, and I know how crucial it is to listen to your customers. We wanted to provide the very best customer service and something different; a sports bar ticked all the boxes and everyone loved the idea! The George bar has always been a happy place, we love to hear it full of laughter and we are already enjoying some

“We’d like to thank all our customers for their fantastic feedback and for supporting us, it really has been overwhelming!” brilliant nights here. We all deserve some fun and some happy times!” If you love to come to the George to have a quiet chat with friends, then please don’t worry – you can still do this and you’ll feel warmly welcomed and comfortable. Steve and his team have made sure the new layout has ‘quiet zones’ where people who don’t want to watch the match or the game can sit and enjoy some of their craft ale or good wines. Don’t forget it’s a fantastic place to share a meal with friends, too! If you love music then the new juke box is a great way of sharing your favourite tunes. Watch the match live on one of the three screens, and if you love playing a game of pool then the George is the place to be – you can even watch the match whilst playing pool on the new 7ft by 4ft pool table. The George welcome extends to a Happy Hour every day (excluding Saturday) with 60p off selected pints and a glass of Prosecco at £3. They have a huge range of cocktails including perfectly served Mojitos, Espresso Martini, Passion Fruit Martini and the House Bloody Mary. Just perfect for a night out with friends. The kitchen is getting busier and busier, the George now offers a British Diner themed menu which suits the Sports Bar theme perfectly. Try their famous ‘Smash’ burgers, the George signature dish. In addition you’ll find spicy wings, hot dogs, ribs & prawn dishes to tempt, with meat supplied by South Downs Butchery. Plant-based hot dogs and burgers will also be available. Everything is priced affordably, making the George a great venue to meet a group of people for a night out. They are pleased to introduce Ayana O’Brien, the new General Manager. “I’ve been the General Manager at the George since September and I am really loving our new theme and the changes we’ve made. The response from customers is brilliant and we are getting busier and busier, we really feel the new facilities make us unique and a great place to go in Henfield. If you love the camaraderie and fun of pub sports then you’ll love a night out at the George; pool, darts and a really sociable atmosphere full of laughs and fun. It’s made it a brilliant place to work.” “We’d like to thank all our customers for their fantastic feedback and for supporting us, it really has been overwhelming! At the George we want to create a community where people feel at home and relaxed, a place where their worries are gone. As one of our lovely customers said: ‘It’s like coming home from a holiday!’ Simone, Mishka, Steve and I look forward to welcoming you all into The George, it’s going to be so much fun!”

How it came through this period has been described by the Trustees of the charity running this amazing Centre in their recently produced Annual Report for 2020, the highlights of which are: • the year started well with a full house of customers for the day care service and with other activities also well supported • following the first Covid-19 lockdown in late March, the Haven had to close but quickly became the operations centre for the Henfield Helpline, working closely with Henfield Parish Council. This volunteer-led service, financed from reserves, grants and donations, provided a lifeline to vulnerable households by providing vital services such as grocery deliveries and collection of prescriptions • June was a month of extreme contrasts. On the 2nd came the announcement of the Haven receiving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, a fully deserved recognition for the Haven’s band of volunteers, equivalent to the MBE. Then a week later, the Haven’s service provider Impact Initiatives announced that they were pulling out with immediate effect, citing the Pandemic • as a result, the Trustees decided to take over the running of the Haven which meant becoming an employer and all that that entails. As the Trustees had only needed limited reserves up to then, a ‘Save Our Haven’ campaign was started which produced an amazing amount of money, sufficient to allow planning for a safe and

timely relaunch 13th July saw the re-opening which, for the rest of the year due to the continuing Covid restrictions, provided phased in services covering operation of the café as a community hub; a catered meeting place for vulnerable people; helpline services and meal delivery; and a centre for other activities and meetings. Annual Reports by their very nature only become available sometime after the period they cover, so with 2021 nearly at an end how is the Haven now faring? With the gradual lifting of the various lockdown restrictions, since July there has been a positive building back of key services. These key services include the provision of the two days per week care for those living with dementia, allowing their carers valuable respite, and the Thursday Club for those with lesser needs. 2022 should see the Haven fully operational which, given the increased need for its services, is very welcome news for the local community. Although the Haven employs a number of skilled people in key positions, it needs many volunteers in supporting roles and external funding to continue as a going concern for the foreseeable future. The Trustees can’t thank enough all those who have supported the Haven in various ways through the recent difficulties and, whilst confident about the immediate future, know that ongoing voluntary and financial support is essential so that the community can continue to benefit from the Haven’s life enhancing services. •

Moments in Time: Trade Tokens

The Old Bell Aug 25th 1897, by Arthur Elliott, West Sussex County Council Library Service

1661

A chilly autumn afternoon and the serving maid walked up a muddy and rutted Henfield High Street. Looking out across the open fields to the church, the Reeve’s house and a scattering of cottages stood nearby. The large Parsonage House of Henry Bishopp Esq. loomed opposite and her employer Mr. William Holney’s residence at Henfield Place was visible further off across the fields. All of Holney’s five daughters would be well married within twenty years, but to the family’s grief, the only son had died in infancy many years earlier, along with several other daughters. The high infant mortality of the day affected rich and poor alike. The little cottage to be known centuries hence by the name ‘Rose’ stood alone on Church Lane, chimney smoking, while picturesque gabled cottages stood either side of the junction. On the other side of the High Street lay inns, taverns, sturdy old hall houses, ramshackle cottages and small shops. Suddenly, a commotion echoed amid loud protestations, the usual suspect was being forcibly ejected by the landlord of one of the village’s tippling-houses - “Farewell thou sot! Don’t return till what is owed is paid!”. Several passers-by took notice. Hurrying across the 44 | BN5 Magazine

road, no doubt on God’s work, Henfield’s Pastor Rev. Richard Allen looked on with a grim glance of disapproval. He had taken on the benefice of St. Peter’s three years prior after the departure of his Parliamentarian predecessor - the same memorable year his son had been born. Aside from the evident ills of popish recusants with their ‘barbarous’ ideas of transubstantiation and home grown schismatics like Quakers - ‘a poor deluded people’ - he could be well assured here of his oft strongly stated view that, ‘drunkenness is the greatest eye-sore’. On the other hand, the windmill lad delivering flour to the White Hart had stopped completely, looking on with an amused stare of firm approval as the entertainment unfolded. Elsewhere, General Monck had marched south into London the year before, setting the cogs into motion for the return of the King, the end of the Commonwealth and the coronation of Charles II in April 1661. Further afield in Europe, many eyes were focused on the threat to Christendom from the Turks. Moving once more towards Central Europe, they would be at the Gates of Vienna for the final time before the century was out. Indeed, nine years later, villagers would be ‘asked’ by sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

royal brief to contribute to a fund for Christian captives of the Ottoman backed Barbary Pirates in Algiers. But back at home, Henry Bishopp was the most prominent man Henfield had seen in a century. For his support of the royalist cause, he was newly appointed by Charles to the eminent position of Postmaster General - eyes looked on across the kingdom with envy. The war and Commonwealth had brought many changes, some lasting and some very temporary. Stretham Manor, part of the Bishop of Chichester’s lands in the area had been expropriated to the Roundhead Sir John Downes, MP for Arundel, although tenants like Thomas Bellingham at Stretham farmhouse and George Rainsford at New Hall remained. On the King’s return, Downes’ head was soon detached, with the lands returned to the Bishop - and so to Henry Bishopp, whose family had held it on long term lease since his grandfather’s time a century earlier. However, Henfield’s Medieval deer park north of the village had fallen into permanent ruin after the Civil War - like many countrywide. With protection and funding removed, the park pales had been taken by locals for building materials, the deer eloped and the two ponds destocked. But, aside from the keepers, it can be guessed that most villagers cared little for the loss of this elite preserve. On the High Street, the drunken spectacle over, the maid approached a doorway and entered the establishment of Elizabeth Trunnell to a “Good day and welcome Miss!” Requesting the items needed, she reached into her apron, pulling out a copper farthing - or was it? Yes - but this was no general legal tender. While professionally minted, it served duty only in this shop. But Mrs Trunnell would supply all that she needed today. In fact, in 1668, a newly minted local ha’penny

would enter the financial fray - nearby shoemaker Thomas Tilford likewise recognised the power of tokens and got in on the act. The Royal Mint was producing insufficient small change for the poor, so the tokens were officially tolerated. Eleven years later Charles II finally outlawed them, minting large numbers of his own ha’pennies and farthings in their stead. These two trade tokens, donated by the Friends of the Museum, can be seen in the museum’s new medals, tokens and coins display - drop by and spot them!

BAGS OF SUPPORT

arrie Mellor is helping to combat the impact of fast fashion by preventing clothing going to landfill. Tackling the second biggest polluter on our planet is no simple task and Karrie’s story takes us from West Sussex in the UK and into the heart of a community in Uganda. Karrie launched Bags of Support in 2012 with the aim of collecting and recycling unwanted clothes from Sussex-based schools, charities, and organisations. Today she works with a team of 18 and their combined efforts have saved more than 50 tonnes of clothing going to waste annually. Speaking with great passion, she told me: “Don’t put clothes in the bin. Every year in the UK people throw away enough reusable clothes to fill Wembley stadium. The amount of water used to produce cotton for one jumper would provide one person with enough drinking water for two years.” Alongside Bags of Support, Karrie is a Trustee of Sussex Green Living (SGL), so education is at the heart of her mission. She helps to teach young people that there is more to clothing than fast fashion. Before the Covid-19 pandemic SGL visited many schools and talked to children about the way we value clothes and how they can be put to much wider use than we realise – for 52 | BN5 Magazine

example tatty items can often be turned into loft insulation. Her key message is ‘only buy what we need’. For Karrie, Bags of Support is the last resort, and she encourages everyone to help the environment by clothes swapping first – through sharing and re-use. For the organisations and schools who use Bags of Support, the process is simple. Karrie and the team will provide online material to aid the collection. They will weigh donations, sort through them, and find each item the best home. They are as ethical as possible in every part of the process – holding clothes sales and selling items online in the UK. They support the organisations who donate and two key charities, an Orphanage in Romania and a community in Uganda who desperately need reusable items. The team has visited Romania four times and annually send over a truck full of vital items which are always so gratefully received. Karrie and the charity NECS have also made several aid trips to deliver reusable items to a village called Nkuringo in Uganda. On one of the special trip, Karrie was joined by her daughter Zara. Bags of Support sponsors the education of www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

NOVEMBER 2021 | Local interest the children in the community and helps to clothe them, their families, and teachers. Due to Covid-19 they haven’t been able to visit this year which has proved so frustrating. Adults and children in Nkuringo are humbled to receive items they desperately need and can’t afford, such as wellies to see them through rainy season. Covid-19 hasn’t deterred Karrie and her team, although they have had to change how they work. They are socially distancing around sorting tables, clothing sales are on hold, and sales have moved online. They are still doing bag collections, which have been much bigger recently due to the charity shops being closed. As Karrie and the team can’t get out to Romania or Uganda due to lockdown measures, they have partnered with a charity called INCH and are in the process of sending a container of items to Sierra Leone. INCH is sending drills that will be used to dig for water and Karrie’s team has packed clothing around them. You can help to combat fast fashion and prevent clothes waste. Cracking the tax code Under the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system, tax is deducted directly from your earnings or company/private pension, before you receive any money. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) gives your employer or pension provider a tax code to show how much tax-free pay you should receive each time you are paid – tax is deducted from anything above this. If your tax code is wrong, you could end up paying too much tax. HMRC sends out millions of notices of PAYE coding. Regrettably, many tens if not hundreds of thousands of these will be incorrect. The taxpayers most likely to receive incorrect coding notices are those who have changed jobs during the year, pensioners with more than one source of pension income and those with part-time earnings in conjunction with pension income.

At best, a tax code is designed to ensure an employee pays approximately the right amount of tax on their earnings each month. The code comprises the allowances to which you are entitled, less deductions for items such as benefits-in-kind. A code will necessarily be based on information relating to the previous year – or perhaps longer ago. Codes recently issued for 2021/22 will typically be based on information derived from the last submitted Tax Return – 2020/21 – so it is important to ensure the code reflects your current circumstances. We ask for about half of the codes we receive to be amended for a number of reasons:• •

Where benefits have changed significantly, e.g. the introduction, withdrawal or significant change to a company car;

• •

the 31st Jan following the tax year. Where it is put in the coding, collection of the liability is being very significantly accelerated and unrepresented taxpayers may not spot this; Where income levels have been overestimated and Personal Allowances restricted; and

Where HMRC incorrectly include reimbursed expenses e.g. for travel, entertaining etc as benefits without the corresponding deduction for allowable expenses.

Pensioners do have tax on their State Pension collected through their coding notice, which is fair enough. Look out for ‘potential underpayments’. This is a slightly unusual deduction and arises where HMRC believe that you will underpay tax in the current year – perhaps because of a change in benefits – but to try and collect that underpayment during the balance of the Tax Year would be unduly onerous. It is worth stressing that for taxpayers who are required to file Self Assessment Tax Returns, any errors in the code will ultimately ‘come out in the wash’. It is merely a question of cashflow timing.

To check a code, firstly look at the allowances given. They increase your tax-free pay and include statutory allowances, such as the Where HMRC claim to be collecting an Personal Allowance, and can include expenses earlier year’s underpayment although we at work and maintenance payments which qualify have requested that it is paid by direct for tax relief. The coding notice then shows the collection on the normal due date; deductions, which reduce tax-free pay. They can include fringe benefits such as company car Where HMRC are attempting to collect and medical insurance. Your employer works the tax on investment income through the out how much your taxable benefits are worth PAYE system instead of it being paid on the normal due date. This is an increasingly and completes form P11d to tell HMRC. Most frequent HMRC practice to which we object employee benefits are declared only if you earn at strongly. Such tax would normally be due on least £8,500 a year.

Subtract total deductions from allowances and you arrive at your tax code by knocking off the last number. Multiply by 10 and you have your tax-free pay. For example, if your code number is 350, then the first £3,500 of your income is tax-free. The most common letters for your tax code will be: • •

L – You are entitled to the standard tax-free basic Personal Allowance of £12,570 for 2021/22; OT -Tax is deducted from all income, there is no Personal Allowance. Maybe no P45 has been supplied or when your Personal Allowance is used up elsewhere.

the amount - £1 for every £2 - you have over that limit. If your income is large enough, your Personal Allowance will be reduced to nil. This £100,000 limit applies irrespective of your date of birth. Check that deductions for benefits are realistic – as a consequence of moving jobs, your benefits may well have changed. Look out for any deduction relating to savings income – unless you are happy to pay tax in advance on an estimated amount of investment income that you may or may not receive!

Your tax code is just an estimate made by your Tax Office. They can only use the information they have. If you tell them what you believe is incorrect, they will amend your code if necessary. • T – If you do not wish anyone to know about If either the deductions are overstated or your your circumstances or if some items of the allowances are understated and you do not code require verification by HMRC. complete a Tax Return, you could end up paying If the deductions exceed the allowances, you will too much tax. So crack the code – sooner rather have negative tax-free pay. This is designated than later! by a K suffix to the tax code. The PAYE tax Paul Samrah, Partner, deductions are then calculated on your actual Moore Kingston Smith LLP salary plus an amount in respect of the excess T: 01737 781546 deductions (10 times the code number). If E : psamrah@mks.co.uk your ‘adjusted net income’ is over £100,000, your Personal Allowance is reduced by half of
