Henfield Birdwatch Anniversary

Editor’s Letter 2024 is a year of anniversaries in Henfield, and this month we are pleased to bring you an article from Mike Russell, Chairman of Henfield Birdwatch, as part of their 25 year celebrations. Henfield Birdwatch welcomes everyone who is interested in birds and wildlife, whatever level of ornithological knowledge, and it’s a great place to learn. Walking locally is given a new dimension of enjoyment if you can slowly learn to identify birdsong, or tell a woodpecker from a nuthatch! They have set the standard with the level of detail in their parish-wide bird surveys, they’ve now built up a large amount of data which gives some really important scientific information on bird habitats, behaviours, declines and increases; so important for the health of our local countryside. To celebrate, we are thrilled to have a cover shot by the incredibly talented wildlife photographer, film-maker and conservationist David Plummer. David lives in Small Dole and took the stunning tawny owl photograph locally. We are grateful that he has allowed us to use his images in this issue of BN5. Enjoy March, spring is just around the corner!

The Henfield Hall

After 35 years as Caretaker / Steward of the Henfield Hall, David Phillipson has decided to take a well-deserved retirement. Over the years David with his wife Linda saw many changes and developments with the Henfield Hall, enabling it to become a key focus point of the village life. Sadly, Linda died in 2019, but David continued his work at the Hall through those difficult times with the support of his family. Throughout the years, the Trustees of the Henfield Hall have always been conscious of the work David has taken on in making the Hall the success it has been often rising early to open up the Hall for special events then closing and locking up after a long day. His contribution and dedication to the Hall will be sincerely missed and we all wish him well in his well earned retirement. I know many people will miss David’s presence at the Hall and will wish him well in his retirement. There will be a new job opportunity at The Henfield Hall and the trustees will be advertising soon for a position. If you are interested in working at the Henfield Hall or you know of somebody please do register your interest and we will send you a job description as soon as they are available. Please contact Jane Jones, Secretary to the Henfield Hall, at: hhsecretary@ henfieldhall.org.uk or check our website for updates www.henfieldhall.org.uk

Horsham District Local Plan – Henfield’s Response

You may be aware that the Horsham District Council Local Plan is published and waiting for your views. The deadline for this is Friday 1st March, and you can find out more at www. horsham.gov.uk/localplanreview and add your response. There was an open meeting in the Henfield Hall Garden Room on 1st February where local residents were able to give their views to Henfield Parish Council’s Plans Advisory Committee, in advance of their formal response to Horsham District Council (HDC). This is particularly important because the HDC Local Plan varies from the already approved Henfield Neighbourhood Plan, with the inclusion of two additional sites identified for potential development (Sandgate Nursery in West End Lane, and land to the south of New Hall Lane in Small Dole). Over 100 people attended the open meeting and Henfield Parish Council (HPC) appreciated hearing the views of the residents who attended. These will be taken into consideration when the Committee respond formally. We encourage residents to also make their own views known by email to Horsham District Council, or preferably online via the local plan review link above.

Walking Football for all at Henfield Leisure Centre

Readers might understandably think that the picture is from the final audition for Daniel Craig’s successor as 007. But no, it is the Henfield Walking Football Group. For the last few years we have been meeting every Monday morning to work the excesses of the weekend out of our aching joints. We have a lot of laughs (mainly at each other’s expense), pretend that we have still “got it” and try to relive the glory years from the distant past. Walking football is a great way to have some exercise but it’s important for us that it is not taken too seriously especially given the number of Brighton and Chelsea fans within the group!

All Change for Dental Recycling

Dental product recycling in Henfield is on the move. These products now need to be placed in our Household Waste (green lidded, in Henfield) bins and not taken to local shops for recycling. The old scheme was financed by Colgate, who paid to recycle all manufacturers’ products, not just their own. But Colgate have started moving to a new material that can be recycled alongside other plastics and are working to persuade other manufacturers to do the same. Unfortunately, the new system can’t come in till all manufacturers are on board and Biffa has the mechanisms in place to cope with the new packaging. So, for the time being please put dental products in your Household Waste bin. They will be made into Refuse Derived Fuel, and won’t be sent to landfill. Alternatively, Boots operates a recycling scheme for toothpaste tubes, but you have to spend £10 and follow their procedure before you can leave them in the store. We just want to say a big, big thank you to everyone who’s helped with recycling dental products for the last few years – to our lovely local business, Bespoke Interiors and Relish for acting as collection points, and to volunteers for storing and sending them off. What a wonderful community effort it has been! To learn more about what happens to all our different types of waste, and how to recycle just about anything, come to the free Sustainable

Help woodland habitats thrive with the Lost Woods Project

The Lost Woods of the Low Weald and Downs project is offering a range of new subsidised courses that teach traditional woodland management and green woodworking skills. People who live or work in the project area, which includes Henfield, are encouraged to join one of the courses and learn skills that actively manage woodlands to boost biodiversity and strengthen habitats. A range of green woodworking courses teaching heritage crafts are also on offer, including how to make your own walking stick and gate-hurdle making. The subsidised courses are available from February until 2027, thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Simon James, chief executive of Small Woods Association which is leading the training programme, said: “We need more actively managed woodlands in Sussex, the key to this will be training people so they can learn how to make woodlands healthier habitats that are more resilient to climate change. “The woodland management courses will be particularly helpful to woodland owners or woodland workers, but if you’re apprentice-level, a conservation volunteer or someone considering a career change, then we’d really like to hear from you, and we encourage you to join us and learn practical woodland skills.” By training local people in the skills needed to actively manage woodlands, and by working directly with landowners to restore their ancient woodlands, the Lost Woods project is aiming to improve the condition of woods in the largely unprotected landscape. Courses are open to people living, working or volunteering in the project area in Sussex. For For more news go to www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

MARCH 2024 | News more information or to book a course, visit www. lostwoods.org.uk. Lost Woods is made possible by players of the National Lottery. As well as offering training, the project is supporting disadvantaged community groups in Sussex to access and enjoy woodlands, and working with landowners and conservation groups to restore ancient woodlands across the project area.

WWII hero Jack Burton celebrates his 100th birthday

On January 5th, 2024, in Henfield, Jack Burton was 100 years old. Jack proudly served in the RAF during World War II as a navigator, flying Liberators and B-25 Mitchells from 1942 to 1946 in Coastal Command, serving in UK, Canada, and finally the Far East, by then promoted to Warrant Officer. He has supported Tottenham Hotspur all his life - attending his first Spurs game in 1933. He can still sing the songs from 1933 and we found the programme from the first game he attended. After retiring from his career in furniture in Brighton, Jack faced a new challenge when he became severely sight impaired (he is now registered blind). With the help of Blind Veterans UK, he was helped by their ‘can do’ attitude, which has been invaluable in his acceptance of his blindness. He has a son and daughter, four stepsons, thirteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren, and three great granddaughters - the youngest of whom was born just after Jack’s 100th birthday this year. As Jack approached his centennial birthday, he and his wife Ann decided that rather than receiving presents, they wanted to give back to Blind Veterans UK by raising funds for this incredible organization, and to support the vital work that Blind Veterans UK does every day. So far, £1,800 has been raised. If you’d like to join Jack and Ann in honouring Jack’s legacy of service and supporting this worthy cause, you can donate by going to his Just Giving page. Henfield Ladybirds 5th Anniversary

Congratulations to Henfield’s Ladybird group who celebrated their 5th anniversary in grand style. Their celebratory party centred on a superb supper, presented by cordon bleu chef Lulu Bradley, supported by a willing team from Henfield Friends of St Barnabas. The entertainment brought much fun and amusement, all being based on the theme of ‘five’. So how many bands and songs can you think of with a 5 in the title? You’ll be surprised! Special thanks must go to the Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men who kindly donated a sumptuous hamper for the raffle, which raised £240 for St Barnabas House Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society. The event raised a further £400 for Henfield Friends of St Barnabas in thanks for their ‘below stairs’ work, and we extend a heartfelt thanks to the Ladybirds for their generous support for our local hospice.

My name is Chloe and I have been a Guide for over a year. I wanted to share a few highlights of 2023 with you. In October we went to Brussels in Belgium for a few days, and it was amazing! We played a massive game of Trivial Pursuit with about 500 other Guides and Rangers from different countries. We had to get six pieces of “pie” by doing different activities and challenges whilst going around the beautiful streets of Brussels. It was a great way to see the famous sights of the city including the little boy fountain and the European parliament. My favourite challenge was eating waffles! The following day we went to mini Europe

News | MARCH 2024 which was really cool and had lots of interesting things like a working rocket and an earthquake simulator. In the afternoon we did a chocolate workshop where we made and learnt about chocolate. We stayed in an apartment and spent the evenings chatting and drinking hot chocolate. It was such a great way to spend a few days with my friends. We also camped overnight at the Guide Hut in Henfield and went to Blacklands Farm for the day. It turned out to be the coldest weekend of the year, so we camped indoors! At Blacklands Farm we did lots of fun activities such as abseiling, rock climbing, lantern making and baking. The next morning, we cooked our breakfast outside on the campfire, which was the perfect way to start our day. During the year we did lots of other fun outdoor activities like kayaking, night-time walks around Henfield, and marshmallow toasting on the open fire. We joined in the village Remembrance Day parade. We also went carol singing just before Christmas and raised over £500 for Great Ormond Street Hospital. On top of that, we did some really cool things indoors last year such as jam making, baking, and lots of arts and crafts. Some of the things I crafted made great presents for my family. I loved helping out at a village jumble sale. It was busy but really enjoyable, and I got some bargains of my own! I really enjoyed last year at Guides and am looking forward to finding out what interesting activities we have planned for 2024, do you want to join me? Or help my leaders run all these amazing activities? You can register here https://www.girlguiding.org. uk/ and they will get in touch with you.

It was lovely to see so many of our wonderful supporters, all of whom we are so grateful for and seemed to enjoy being waited on by the Youth Club attendees. 2024 is set to be another exciting year for Henfield Youth Club with new project nights, which will be running on Wednesday evenings very soon and as always, we continue to see good numbers at both our Junior and Senior evenings. Our Poppin’ Café on Fridays has seen an increase in popularity recently, especially with the skaters of the village who have been enjoying our safe space and good food whilst showing off their skateboarding skills. Lastly, we are excited to announce that we are lucky enough to be joined by 2 new members of staff, who run the Poppin’ Café on Friday evenings. MARCH 2024 | News

On December 2nd 2022, ten days before my 60th birthday, I had a major car accident and suffered some pretty serious injuries. The internal ones healed conservatively with rest. The ten broken ribs, shattered femur and broken kneecap required physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, not to mention some extraordinary surgery and care from the Royal Sussex Hospital. All the services were amazing. I am so grateful to them and everyone for their care and kindness. My recovery was aided by the fact that I had a good level of fitness, due in most, to regularly swimming at the Cowfold Community Pool, a weekly Pilates Class at St Michaels Church Hall and walking in the countryside. By April 2023 I was able to attend Cowfold Community Pool, doing my physiotherapy exercises and swimming. The pool is a gem tucked away behind St Peters Church; open air, heated to 28 degrees, 15m with maximum depth of 1.2m. There are steps to access the pool, but, when I first went back, I was still on crutches and I sat on the side and swung my legs over. I have been part of the Cowfold Swim Group for the last three years and it was in great part due to swimming here that my fitness level had improved prior to my accident. The group is primarily for lane swimming, but I stayed in my lane and did my physio exercises and swam. There is also a regular swim yoga group, toddler splash class

and you can privately hire it, out of school hours, their website has all the details. This all raises money to maintain the pool and ensure that it continues for the school children to learn to swim and members of the community to take advantage of this facility. The pool was built by the community in 1969, in memory of three young men from the area who lost their lives in an accident at sea the previous year. I have run the swim group in conjunction with the school for the last couple of years and would love other people to benefit from it. Celebrating

25 Years of

Henfield Birds Indirectly, we can thank the National Lottery for the emergence of Henfield Birdwatch back in 1999. While working for the Sussex Wildlife Trust at Woods Mill the National Lottery set up some millennium awards for people working in environmental education in a conservation project and I got to spend two weeks studying the effects of acid rain on the Bohemian coniferous forests. One of the caveats of receiving this award was to ’do something in your community’ so, having harboured an idea of finding about the bird life in the parish, I set about contacting people I knew that were interested in birds.

Our first year-long survey was then organised for 1999 and very encouragingly, 102 residents actively took part by volunteering to survey a designated area once a month, reporting on the birds in their garden on a weekly basis and reporting random sightings around the parish. The following year, our first report was produced and it gave us a really good baseline of data on which we could monitor the populations through future surveys.

Credit: Turtle Dove – Paula Blake

Within an hour of a series of phone calls, a group of 10 people were assembled. We then met up at Woods Mill and a committee was formed and three objectives emerged: 1. To monitor the population of Henfield birds through regular surveys and monitoring; 2. To engage the residents of the parish in assisting with the monitoring and also to provide opportunities to enjoy the birds around them; 3. To use the data collected on bird populations to provide the scientific information in relation to planning applications. 22 | BN5 Magazine

Henfield Birdwatch would not be as successful as it has been without the support of the local community so we encourage people to learn about, engage with and want to conserve the birds so that Henfield remains a great place for wildlife and people to live. We have a programme of talks, walks and trips and over the years we’ve had some wonderful talks on birds from around the world including The South Atlantic, Poland and Guyana. Other talks have encouraged us to think about our gardens for wildlife, learn about the rise of Honey Buzzards and Goshawks in Sussex and most recently, learn about breeding Terns in Chichester Harbour. Monthly walks in the parish show attendees how good and varied the birdlife of Henfield is while the ‘Big Bird Bash’, now an annual event, looks to find how many species are recorded over one weekend.

White-taile Eagle – Claire Hilton

In addition we’ve undertaken long-term special surveys: Nigel and Debbie Colgate, Lesley Milward and Will Green are monitoring the birds on Perching Manor Farm, while more recently Lesley and Val Bentley are now surveying the birds at the Sussex Prairie Gardens. Throughout the 25 years, Val and Will have been assessing the breeding Nightingale pairs in the parish that has involved many a late-night patrol around the lanes with one year attracting the attention of a police patrol car! An iconic bird of Henfield is the Swift, a nationally declining species that many of us look forward to their arrival in May. To help this wonderful bird Debbie now runs our Swift project and through the encouragement of people providing nest boxes, the Swift population is slowly but gradually increasing.

“Henfield Birdwatch would not be as successful as it has been without the support of the local community...”

we’ve lost a number of birds as breeding species, such as Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Spotted Flycatcher and Willow Warbler, while Turtle Doves are hanging on by a thread. However, we’ve gained new species such as Cetti’s Warbler, Cattle and Little Egrets and in the near future we’re likely to see White-tailed Eagles and White Storks over Henfield skies. In our 25th Anniversary year, Henfield Birdwatch is in a very healthy state with over 250 members and has an excellent reputation as a community wildlife project well beyond its boundary. We look forward to even more success over the next quarter of a century.

Mike Russell, Chairman Henfield Birdwatch

Credit: Little Egret – Charles Waters

We began doing a year-long survey followed by an annual report every five years and this continued up until 2019. For our 2010 report we were awarded the Marsh Award for a community conservation project from the British Trust for Ornithology that came with a welcome £1,000 donation. We have now changed our way of surveying to doing four a year - two breeding and two winter. What has also changed is that we’re now getting many more random records from residents and visiting birdwatchers through our Facebook page, members email group and from the Sussex Ornithological Society’s ‘What’s Around’ page.

With all this data we have collected, what has happened to our birds over the last 25 years? Unsurprisingly, trends by and large reflect what is happening nationally. Starlings are our most numerous species but have declined by nearly 50%, as have House Sparrows. Sadly,

Lyn Fryer is the current Costume Lead for HTC, heading up a regular team of four talented individuals and ad-hoc volunteers, but they are on the look-out for other talented designers and creators to join them, as she explains: “If you’re interested in sewing or costume fitting and would like to get involved we would love to hear from you. If you’ve ever been to see one of the fabulous Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) productions, you’ll know just how professional their costumes are. From the incredible fairies in ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’, to Dorothy’s ruby slippers and the military uniforms of ‘Oh, What a Lovely War’, the volunteer wardrobe department of Henfield Theatre Company helps to bring our favourite characters to life. 28 | BN5 Magazine

With four or five productions a year, the wardrobe department is crucial to any production. Costumes are one of the first things that the audience sees and they give them an idea of what is about to happen. The wardrobe department design, source and create all the clothing and accessories worn by the character and help fit them as well as organise the wardrobe. Once a production is decided upon then a costume budget is agreed with the Production Manager. Working with the artistic vision of the Directors, the research, designing and creating starts. If it’s not possible to create a costume then they look to source it from somewhere else. www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

Lyn says “It’s a really lovely job. The design can be a challenge as you have to meet the Director’s vision whilst also ensuring the costume is authentic for the period the play is set in.” She continues: “Making the costumes can sometimes also be challenging as not only do you sometimes have to create your own patterns, but occasionally you are creating some very weird and wonderful creatures, too! For Treasure Island I had to create a parrot costume – something that I’d certainly never done before – and for the Wizard of Oz I needed to incorporate my husband’s design skills to create the classic Tin Man costume.”

wardrobe department also like to hold at least one workshop session per production in which, for example, we can cut out costumes or create a particular type of headdress together.”

This voluntary role can be however big or small you would like it to be – When Lyn first started volunteering for HTC she was still working full time so volunteered to create just one costume per production, whereas now she is designing and creating alongside her team for up to four or five productions a year.

In 2023 Henfield Theatre Company were incredibly proud to win the Brighton & Hove Arts Council Drama Awards for Best Costume Design for Jekyll & Hyde, having previously also won in it in 2019 for One Man, Two Guv’nors).

“It’s a very sociable role as you get to meet everyone involved in the production. The

If you’re experienced in sewing they’d love to hear from you, but the HTC wardrobe department are also interested in those who are maybe less proficient at stitching, but who have a passion for costumes, or are good at organising and categorising. There are some great opportunities for those who would like to help backstage with makeup and wigs on production nights, too.

Henfield Theatre Company is growing in numbers and success each year, why not get involved!

“In the swimming world, certainly in the UK, swimming the English Channel is THE swim.”

Dani’s Channel Swim with Mencap Marvels Last month we were fascinated to hear about Dani Kaelin’s channel swim to raise money for Mencap and here she tell us more about her inspirations and the challenges involved. “I’ve always liked swimming, but I have really developed a strong love for sea swimming in recent years. What started as sea dipping with some like-minded buddies turned into something that dominates most of my spare time. I have taken part

in a few swim races and events up to 10k, but last year I and three of my swimming friends decided to set ourselves a tougher challenge for this year – swimming the English Channel in a relay team. This means that the four us will take it in turns to swim an hour each until we get from Folkstone to France, so we all will likely swim for 3-4 hours. The shortest route to swim across the English Channel is 21 miles (31 Kilometres). However when swimming you have currents to contend with and so the crossing can in fact be much longer. The quickest time a soloist has ever done is less than 7 hours, the longest crossing took over 29 hours. In the swimming world, certainly in the UK, swimming the English Channel is THE swim. But so far only 2,428 soloist and 1,062 relay teams have completed it. There are many perils whilst swimming the channel. For starters, it is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world with approximately 600 ships and about 200 ferries using the water every day, so the swimmers heavily rely on the little support boat to navigate and guide their way past the big ships. My children are worried that I’ll get eaten by sharks or swordfish and whilst that is unlikely, the prospect of huge jellyfish, or overly interested seals are a genuine concern. One of the most common reasons why Channel swim attempts fail is sea sickness, or diesel sickness. The former can be helped by motion sickness medications - although when I spoke to the doctor about this, he was very quick to point out that almost all motion sickness

34 | BN5 Magazine

www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

MARCH 2024 | Local interest medications have a side effect of drowsiness. Not ideal if you need to swim to France. The latter problem, diesel sickness is the unfortunate problem when you have to swim in very close proximity to a boat. Invariably diesel enters the water and one wrong move you can end up with a mouthful. Since embarking on my challenge to swim the channel in a relay, the most common response I have got is Why? It’s a fair question and has a two-fold answer. Firstly, I always like to have a challenge. The second reason, and the most important reason is that I am proud to be completing my swim with The Mencap Marvels. The Mencap Marvels is run by Channel soloist and super woman Nikki Pope and her wife Cate. Nikki and Cate’s passions not only for swimming but also for Mencap is inspiring. Mencap support babies to old aged pensioners with learning disabilities. The work they do is incredibly important and to those who require their help – it is life changing. Asking for donations for events is something I feel quite shy about. But with the government cuts, and government targets relating to the provision of support for people with learning disabilities missed year on year, Mencap need our help more than ever.”

2024 Henfield Year of Biodiversity Henfield Parish Council designated 2024 the local Year of Biodiversity to signal how important our local environment is to us now, and to generations in the future. Although the Parish Council has limited resources and often relies on volunteers to deliver projects, we hope we can demonstrate that it is committed to protecting the wildlife, trees and environment that we value, and will prioritise in council decisions.

(and some tall tales) in his talk ‘The Wonderful Wildlife of the Lost Woods’. He focussed on Henfield’s flora and fauna and encouraged us with news about the good things happening for nature recovery in our village. Did you know Henfield is a hot spot for the Stag Beetle, or that you can find the eggs of the endangered Brown Hairstreak Butterfly on blackthorn bushes around the village?

In February Libby Morris led a training workshop - Henfield Nature Challenge - to help local people record their wildlife sightings. Increasing the number of recorded species for Henfield is a very important way we can all help. Conservationists and decision-makers use these records to help plan ahead for nature recovery, know what needs protecting and where things are working well. The The Year of Biodiversity was officially launched records also help with planning surveys and can at a very well-attended event in Henfield Hall on 17 January 2024. Our keynote speaker, naturalist of course highlight an important natural habitat Michael Blencowe, told us many fascinating facts that must be preserved. Also in February was the wonderful Henfield Birdwatch celebration event with David Plummer and the Gardens and Arts’ Seed Swap. 2024 has already got off to a good start. Firstly, we have set up Henfield Nature, an informal umbrella group of wildlife supporters to act as a steering group this project. It includes local wildlife experts and enthusiasts from several of our local clubs.

Spring is the time when many gardeners set up their garden for the season. In support of our Year of Biodiversity in Henfield, and to encourage a wider variety of wildlife in our gardens, maybe you could consider making your garden a little more wildlife friendly as this can really make a difference to pollinators. Ideas include having a small area of lawn unmown, at least during No Mow May, or leaving a small area for wildlife where the dandelions and stinging nettles can remain to help our bees and butterflies.

Look out for more news in the coming months about a special Henfield community walk in late July in memory of Malcolm Eastwood. It is especially poignant at this time, as Councillor Malcolm Eastwood suggested the idea of this focus on biodiversity as a follow-on from 2023’s Our March Flower of the month is Violets. Do Year of Children and Young People in the village. send your photos of wild violets seen around He felt that this was a fitting way to recognise the the village to the Parish Council Facebook page. fantastic contribution to village life made by groups Henfield PC are purchasing some heritage violets such as Henfield Birdwatch and Henfield Gardens which are the same varieties grown and sold by and Arts who celebrate their 25th Anniversaries Misses Allen-Brown at their flower nursery near this year. Shopping sustainably with

St Barnabas House If you’re looking for ways to become more sustainable this year, tiny changes can have a big impact. One way to improve your carbon footprint is by shopping and donating to the St Barnabas House charity shop in Henfield High Street. The shop is part of a chain of hospice shops raising more than £1 million annually. This vital income enables the charity to provide care for local people at the hospice in Worthing and in the community.

The shop has an excellent range of clothing, accessories and handbags – from designer to beloved high street brands. And at pre-loved prices, you won’t have to sport the same look twice! It also sells furniture and bric-a-brac, and the shop is known for attracting unusual and collectable pieces. And while you’re saving money on quality items, you are also doing your bit for the planet – giving new life to clothes, furniture and bric-a-brac that might otherwise end up as landfill. Last year, the charity collected and rehomed nearly 7,000 pieces of pre-loved furniture, thanks to the generosity of people in our local community. And they’re always grateful to receive your preloved and unwanted items. The charity operates a free collection service in West Sussex, so it couldn’t be easier – simply contact the Retail Distribution Centre on 01903 275660. Everything must be good quality and compliant with Trading Standards, including fire safety. A sympathetic and compassionate house clearance is available too, and you can find more details on our website.

MARCH 2024 | Local interest Although donations are always welcome, storage space is limited so do call the shop before making your journey to check it can be safely received. And don’t forget to sign up to Gift Aid, so the charity can claim 25p in every pound back from the taxman. Last year, Gift Aid across hospice shops came to over £210,000! That’s a lot of extra income to support local hospice care. Charity shops couldn’t open their doors without volunteers. There are a variety of roles from operating the till and dealing with the customers,

to sorting, steaming and merchandising. Hours are flexible and the kettle is always on! If you would like to know more, please do pop into the shop for a chat. St Barnabas House is the hospice for the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas. Thanks to support from the local community, adults with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones can enjoy life as fully as possible, for the time they have left together. Specialist care is provided in people’s own homes across the area, as well as in the hospice building in Worthing. And when the time comes, St Barnabas House is there to support people at the end of their life so that they can die with dignity in a warm and caring environment. Thank you for your support.

Review of Henfield Theatre Company’s

Wizard of Oz

The following is taken from a review by Susanne Crosby of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) who reviewed Henfield Theatre Company’s recent fabulous pantomime. “The introduction as a film: moving lights, the 20th Century Fox and MGM music, followed by the Cowardly Lion with is head through a toilet seat which he then opened and roared through, like the MGM lion, was total genius! It set the tone perfectly, let us know what was about to follow had elements of ridiculous, and showed what a sense of humour Henfield Theatre Company have. It was the funniest opening of any show for a very long time and laughter took a very long time to die down. Brilliant!

depending on the scene. The people in the Emerald City were green from costumes to wigs, as they should be, and the ruby slippers looked like they had just come out of the film. Everything had authenticity and care flowing from it.

The changing sets included projections and in some cases moving projections, like the tornado, which worked really well. The steps down at the front which became part of the yellow brick road also lit up with LED lights which was a lovely touch. The massive hourglass looked like it came … The costumes and makeup throughout the whole straight out of the film, and the sign painting show were superb, as always with Henfield Theatre and painted bushes and log worked so well. The Company. Scarecrow, Lion, Tin Man, Wicked Witch House having fallen with the legs out underneath including blacked out tooth, plus Toto the dog were was brilliant, perfectly placed size wise as well all detailed and amazing, as were the four trees, as space. Glinda bending and taking a selfie in plus Aunty Em’s ever changing wigs and costumes front of it was hilarious. The Wizard at the end 48 | BN5 Magazine

MARCH 2024 | Local interest being buffeted in his hot air balloon basket with balloons tied to the top, moving through the audience, was so very funny… Becky Pearson as Dorothy had really lovely stage presence, leading the whole show with innocence, warmth and a touch of vulnerability: a combination that never once became irritating as is so often the case. Toto, her side-kick (dog) was played with graceful exuberance by Chloe Denyer who showed some great physical acting skills as well as adding her beautiful singing voice to the piece. The shaking that she and Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man did when they were scared, including at the knees, was just right and so very funny. The camaraderie between Becky Pearson and Chloe Denyer including the dancing really exuded to the audience which was both joyful and joyous to experience. All the actors reacted really well to the audience participation and whooped them up appropriately to feel part of the whole show. There were some young hecklers shouting very funny derisory comments to the Wicked Witch played by Sarah Jenner-Jones which she handled really well. Her performance was full commitment as well, a joy to watch, including her sad ‘aside’ lamenting that she had been in ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ yet here she was in this – super funny. Indeed all of the funny moments in the Panto seemed to come from things that they had added in, rather than the script itself, those scripted jokes were really very old and some not even worth a groan response. Terry McMaster as Aunty Em was thwarted by awful jokes: it was really admirable of him to keep going with great energy despite that. Luke Punt as Harry Trotter (not Harry Potter!) looking more and more like Harry Potter with additional costume pieces each time he came on was really funny. Ian Henham was a lovely Cowardly Lion and Alex Carter was a sweet humble Scarecrow and friend to Dorothy, with great energy throughout. David Purchase was hilarious as a massively camp Tin Man, with really funny innuendo jokes. A Tin Man many of us will have never seen before and are glad we have. The always hilarious Helen Fyles was a fabulous Glinda, getting calls on her mobile while on stage. She has a really natural funny bone and great comic timing. What really lifted this whole show bizarrely were the Wicked Witch’s two flying monkeys: Salt and Pepper, played by Ashtyn Roworth and Robyn Thomas. The gangsta / rapper attitudes and songs, their performance of ‘Ice, Ice Baby’ – a tricky song – was brilliant. They were fully committed in their characters and all their movements throughout the show which was a joy to see. Their presence made a show that was good into a show that was very, very good.

01273 494002

There were some really lovely touches to this and super attention paid to movement… The music choices, some with reworded lyrics, were instantly recognisable popular choices and made everyone happily clap along. The choreography was just right, lovely detail, everyone moved together and had finished lines. The dancing on different levels especially in Rock DJ was really great. What also stands out for Henfield is the inclusivity. This was a whole community in the company coming together. The support that everyone on stage showed each other throughout was heart-warming to experience: from teenagers to the very oldest; from seasoned actors to others who may never have been on stage before. Director Karen Blunden, who also choreographed, should be congratulated on a super show that left every single audience member beaming and smiling as they left: having seen such a charming joyful show with such heart.”

“...a charming joyful show with such heart.” BN5 Magazine | 49

Understanding Accounts Your business accounts reflect the financial performance of your enterprise. They are a valuable management tool in deciding strategy and setting budgetary targets. If you are baffled by the figures and all the jargon, the following explanations may help clear the fog! Accounting Reference Date or Balance Sheet Date – Accounts are prepared annually to a specific date – this is called the Accounting Reference Date (ARD) or Balance Sheet Date (BSD). Businesses can choose any Accounting Reference Date – typically this will be a month-end. Accruals Basis of Accounting & Accounts Preparation – This method records income as it is earned and expenditure as it is incurred, regardless of whether the monies have been received or paid by the ARD. Income is matched with the expenditure to which it relates, i.e. wages & salaries matched with income generated. This basis gives a fair reflection of financial performance – the accounts will show monies due (debtors) and monies owing (creditors). This compares with the cash basis, which only records monies received/ paid and ignores liabilities or monies due. Audited Accounts - Accounts are said to have been audited when an independent examination of the financial statements and underlying records has been carried out and an opinion given. In most cases, the audit will be focussed on the requirement for accounts to show a ‘true and fair view’. The auditor’s opinion is provided in the form of an Audit Report, addressed to the company’s shareholders or Partners (in the case of a Partnership). Most private limited companies having an annual turnover of less than £10.2m are exempt an audit. There is no statutory requirement for Partnership accounts to be audited - it is up to the Partners to decide and for the Partnership Agreement to reflect their decision. An Accountant’s Report - This report states that the accounts have been prepared by a firm of accountants on the basis of information supplied. It explicitly states that no audit has been performed. Profit & Loss Account – Sometimes referred to as an Income & Expenditure Account, this summarises all the income due to, less all the 60 | BN5 Magazine

expenses incurred by, the business. Rather like the hands of a clock, it sweeps up all the activities of the business for the given period (normally 12 months). The result is a profit or a loss (losses are usually shown in brackets). Profit – This is the total profit that the business has made during the accounting period – in the case of a Partnership to be shared between the partners and set off against their drawings (see below). Appropriation of Profits – Partnership accounts are usually supplemented by a Note to the Accounts indicating the profit allocation. The first tranche of profit might be to allocate specific sources of income to certain partners; the residual balance is then shared in the partners’ profit sharing ratios (PSRs). Drawings – These are monies taken by Partners from the business for personal use – and are paid out on account of each partner’s profit share. Balance Sheet – Rather like a snapshot picture, the Balance Sheet shows the net worth of the business at a particular date (the BSD) and it comprises fixed and current assets less its liabilities. Tangible Fixed Assets – These are assets which have a relatively long life (more than one year) and are relatively fixed (in size, shape or form); they are permanent in nature and used by the business in its operation. Examples include: freehold/leasehold land and buildings, furniture, fixtures, fittings and equipment (inc. computers), and motor vehicles. These assets are generally sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

relatively expensive and will be used over long periods of time. As the life of these assets extends over many accounting periods, it is necessary for your accountant to allocate the cost of the asset to current and future operations on some rational basis.

yet to be invoiced – e.g. accountancy fees for preparing the year’s financial statements.

Capital Accounts (Partnerships only) – Partners’ Capital Accounts reflects the amount of money paid into the business by the Partners, usually in accordance with the Partnership This allocation is called ‘Providing for Depreciation’ Agreement. This is usually fixed and rarely varies. and within the Profit & Loss Account, an element of depreciation will be charged. Fixed assets are Current Accounts (Partnerships only) – usually shown at original cost less accumulated Partners’ Current Accounts reflect each Partner’s depreciation, equalling Net Book Value. ‘pot’ – containing the Partner’s profit share less drawings taken during the year.
