Kathryn has been working in horticulture since the age of 16 and has decades of experience in how to get the most out of your garden this month!

• Dead head bedding plants to prolong their flowering season.

• Continue to feed containers and hanging baskets with liquid feed weekly.

• Pick courgettes when they are 4 inches/10cm long, unless you are a particular fan of marrows!

• Cut back lavender after flowering – if you like, you can save some to dry indoors to scent your home.

• Make a plan for your houseplants for when you are on holiday! If you don’t have a friendly neighbour volunteering to water them, you can arrange a moisture mat on your draining board with one end dangling into a sink full of water and place your plant pots onto the matting to gradually suck up the water.

Editor’s Letter

We were so pleased to hear of the ‘against the odds’ success of the Henfield Men’s Senior Reserves team in the Tony Kopp Cup back in May, and it seemed fitting to put them on our July cover! Gemma Parsons is the first female team manager to have led a team to this level of success in the local leagues and we’re really proud of her and the whole team for their fighting spirit. James Bowes from HFC has written a report of the match on page 36.

With the summer holidays fast approaching please take a look at our Events pages as well as the online diary - where you can filter events by interest (in this instance, Children, or maybe Young People & Teens). It’s especially useful if you’re at a loose end. Please also take a look at page 40 where you’ll find a charming free activity event for smaller children at Newtimber Church, which has been created by a Woodland School expert. Take a picnic and enjoy this beautiful spot! Details of the Walk for Malcolm to Sussex Prairies are on page 22. This will be a real community day out, for Malcolm, who left such a lasting legacy to our village.

Enjoy the sunshine!s

What a Day!

If you weren’t at the Vintage Revival Day in Steyning High Street on 5th May, you missed a corker! The Steyning & District Community Partnership Visitor and Tourism Committee, who put the event together, really excelled themselves. There were vintage cars, vans and motor bikes galore plus steam engines, a fairground organ, rides and attractions, a miniature railway, singers, dancers, face painters and balloon artists, antique stalls, food and drink offerings and, of course, the wonderful eateries and shops of Steyning High Street. It was just good, old-fashioned fun from start to finish and was a credit to all those

involved in putting it together. The only downside now is that it will probably be another year before we see another such occasion – don’t miss it next time! Pictures only show a small taster, but they do serve to give an insight into the spectacle that took place.

Reina Alston, Steyning & District Community Partnership

Henfield Youth Club need your help

Henfield Youth Club has been at the heart of the village for decades. We have seen countless members pass through our doors, only to return in later years either with their own young people or as staff members and volunteers!

As a charity, we rely heavily on contributions, donations and volunteers to enable us to keep offering our vital services to the young people in our community.

From offering a safe-space for the young people to meet up; to providing fun, educational activities; to being able to build trusted, valued relationships with our members. Our community is in the heart of everything we do.

We are currently looking for some more volunteers to come in during our Junior and Senior sessions, new people to join our committee, and also someone to help sell donated items to raise some extra money to go towards Youth Club.

If you think you could help in any way then please do let us know!

On a lighter note, we’re sure you saw our lovely art display at the skate park from our graffiti evening back in May. It was a very successful night, which saw a great bunch of local young people being able to express themselves through their artwork. A massive thank you to Brody, one of our regular members, who ran the session for us. It was a great success! And thanks again to The Sussex Community Foundation for their donation.

Henfield Hall Celebrates 50th Birthday!

That’s 50 years of parties, christenings, jumble sales, film shows, elections, fairs, theatrical performances, community days and markets to name but a few of the events and celebrations the Hall has witnessed over the years. Add to that all the groups that regularly use the hall from gardening clubs to art groups not forgetting our famous Monday market and all the fitness classes, WI groups, our super Theatre Company and so many more. We are lucky as a village to have this space, but not many people know that it is in fact a charitable enterprise. We rely on our local community using the Hall, alongside grants and donations, to ensure its future.

Over the years the hall has seen some fabulous events and hopefully many more to come. To celebrate the Hall will be having some special celebrations over the actual birthday in November and we would love you to be part of it, keep your eyes open for more details!

There will be more news over the coming months but in the meantime, we would love to hear from you. Have you any amusing or poignant stories about the Henfield Hall? We are hoping to gather as many as possible and they will all feature as part of the celebrations. We will have a fabulous prize for the best story. If you can support your stories with any pictures that would be even better. We promise to take great care of them, and they will of course all be able to be collected afterwards, please write your name and telephone number on the back of the picture, or you can email them digitally.

The Hall has some stories to tell, and we want you to tell them, so get your pens or laptops out and any pictures if you have them. They can be dropped into the Hall office just adjacent to the Hall Monday to Friday between 9-11am, or you can email them to hhenquiries@henfieldhall.org.uk

If you haven’t been in the Hall (and I can’t believe you haven’t) then do please come and have a look. We have a super main hall that just cries out for your party, celebration or even a lovely wedding. Alongside the lovely Garden Room and

its pretty garden for your summer soiree!

We have a licensed bar that can be hired and a superb kitchen, have a look at our new website and you can see at a glance the rooms and the rates alongside a user friendly new online booking system that shows you instantly what is available.

I’m always ready to show you round, and I have access to lots of useful contacts for you to help build the perfect event. Email me on hhenquiries@ henfieldhall.org.uk or give me a call on 01273 493365, and I look forward to showing you our super facilities.

Twineham C of E Primary seek new Governors

Due to the recent expansion of the Governing Board, we are currently seeking 2 new co-opted community Governor appointments and would be delighted if someone who resides nearby would take up the post.

School governors have a varied and important role, in helping our school run effectively. They have 3 core functions: Planning the strategic direction of the school, overseeing financial performance of the school and ensuring money is well spent, and holding the head teacher or school leadership to account.

The governor role is strategic rather than operational. Governors don’t get involved with the day to day running of a school, instead supporting and challenging the school’s leadership team to drive school improvement. They champion the work the school does. Our board consists of 12 people and we meet

all together around 10 times per year – mainly in person and sometimes via Zoom. Our governors come from our local community and have various roles supporting the school, you can find out more by contacting us.

Being a school governor is a commitment and a responsibility but offers you the chance to see first-hand the impact you can make in improving education for children in your community. No special qualifications are needed and the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the school and be prepared to play an active part in the governing body’s work. We are particularly looking for someone who can strengthen our board with skills in Education and Finance, though this is not a requirement for the role and are happy to consider all applications. You can find information on the Governors for Schools website www.governorsforschools.org. uk alternatively you can get in touch with Julia Pattenden Chair of Governors via jpattenden@ twineham.w-sussex.sch.uk or 07721 620292 who will arrange to talk you through what it involves. If you would like to apply, please contact Julia for an application form. If it’s something you might be interested in we hope you’ll apply.

ABCD Club Charity Day

The ABCD Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club are a very friendly club and meet every Friday afternoon in the Henfield Hall to play duplicate bridge. On 17 May we held our annual Charity Day to raise funds for a local charity. This year we nominated the Henfield Self Help Group which meet every Tuesday and provide a valuable service to many or the village senior citizens by offering a meeting place, a substantial midday meal and entertainment. They also provide return transport between their homes and the Henfield Hall, all at a nominal cost.

As part of our Charity Day we held a prize raffle where we normally seek the support of local shops and businesses. We were very pleased to

492932 or 07977 095549

receive a number of very varied prizes donated from the following supportive local businesses; Swains Farm Shop, Jeremy’s Fruit & Veg, Setyres, R & H Pet Supplies, South Downs Butchers, Pinks Hairdressers, Hamfelds Hardware Store. Without the support of these local businesses our job of raising money would be considerably more difficult and we would like to extend a big thank you to all of them. With the raffle prize money, plus donations from individual club players and the ABCD club itself, we managed to raise a grand total of £350. Again, our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved.

ABCD meet every Friday afternoon from 2-5pm in the Garden Room of the Henfield Hall. Do come along if you’d like to play some bridge. All you need is a basic knowledge of duplicate bridge and a minimal amount of money for the afternoon’s play (£2 if you become a member, which is £10 per annum, or £4 as a visitor). Tea, coffee and biscuits are also included which is even more of a reason to come along. If you want more information, just call Roger on 07472 71919 – We’d love to see you.

Community Transport Sussex

Salutes Paul Samrah with Minibus Naming Ceremony

On Thursday, May 9, Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club and Community Transport Sussex celebrated Paul Samrah’s remarkable contributions to the club with a special surprise minibus naming ceremony. Held at the club’s training ground, the event featured special guest Glen Murray, honouring Paul’s unwavering dedication and forthcoming retirement.

Matt Roberts, CEO of Community Transport Sussex and a lifelong supporter, highlighted Paul’s impact: “The naming of our minibus in Paul Samrah’s honour serves as a lasting testament to his enduring legacy. He has done so much for the beautiful game in Sussex and is a hero to many.”

Graham Short, a local Henfield driver with CTS who helped organise the event, remarked, “It’s great to see a real local hero getting recognised for the amazing work he has done for both the Albion and the village of Henfield. He has had a huge input over the years in our local football club (Henfield FC) which has a positive influence on the local community. Paul was also involved in setting up the Henfield FC Youth Tournament, one of the biggest in Southeast, which goes a long way to funding the club each year. He is also usually the quiz master for the big quiz held each year to fund the Henfield Hall. We owe him so much for all he has done.”

Paul’s involvement with Brighton & Hove Albion was pivotal during the club’s financial

struggles. His relentless dedication and professional expertise played a crucial role in safeguarding the club’s future. Tony Bloom, the club’s chairman, acknowledged Paul’s vital contributions: “Paul is a huge part of our history. He did so much for the club in its darkest hour to shine a light on the plight of the club and help to save it.”

Glen Murray, former player and pundit, praised Paul’s spirit and devotion: “It is only fitting to pay tribute to Paul, whose spirit and selfless devotion helped save the club from oblivion.”

DJ Norman Cook added a personal touch, emphasising the shared journey and expressing gratitude for Paul’s steadfast support.

Henfield Shedders face uncertain future - please help!

Things are looking bleak for the Henfield Shed. At the time of going to print and after pursuing around 20 potential leads that came from their recent social media communications, volunteers from the Henfield Shed are still actively, and urgently, seeking a new home.

With their planning application for the renovation of the old abandoned Tanyard Building facing opposition from a small but vocal minority of residents, and their pressing and imminent

removal from their High Street rented workshops, the future is not looking at all bright and the volunteers who run this essential service are facing the worrying possibility that the group could close.

They are in conversation with a generous local business owner who is working hard to see if they can accommodate the group on their land, for which they are enormously grateful, but they are still some way from a secure future. They would dearly love some alternative options.

At BN5 we know how crucial the Henfield Shed is to our village. It helps many people who would otherwise be lonely and isolated and offers essential support to people who are bereaved or may not have local friendship groups. Those who run the group have deep concerns for several of their members who will be left with nothing if they can’t visit the Shed for friendship, purpose and laughter in their lives.

So, we would love to hear from you if you have a small area of land which may be suitable for a temporary building. Or you may have some old stables or outbuildings, or an old workshop or double garage you no longer use. The Shedders will need running water and toilet facilities, heat and light. Other than that, their needs are not extensive. They are able to offer reasonable but not commercial levels of rental income to someone who will help, and are extremely good neighbours and tenants, too.

We call upon local groups and organisations to get behind the Shedders, give them their moral and practical support and help to keep them in the village.

Henfield, we are getting dangerously close to losing a quite incredible organisation from our village, and it’s unlikely to return if it closes. These are desperate times, please don’t let this happen! If you have ANY suggestions, ideally offers of help on land or property of your own, please email Info@henfieldshed.org.uk or contact Pete Gumbrell on 07770 935709.

Henfield commemorates D-Day 80

Henfield residents attended two events to remember the brave servicemen who fought and the many who gave their lives during the D-Day landings, the largest Naval, Air and Land operation in history, which took place 80 years ago in June.

Commemorative flags were raised at the Henfield Hall and at the Henfield Club, and a short service and Last Post was sounded, after the two-minute silence at 11am. A Royal British Legion standard bearer lowered the flag, before the Reveille was sounded and the Kohima Epitaph read. Cllr Elaine

Goodyear laid a wreath at the Henfield War Memorial on behalf of the village.

Later, that evening, a twilight procession left the War Memorial at 8.45pm, to walk to the Rothery Field on Nep Town Road. There the Henfield Beacon was lit, and the Remembrance Statement and International Tribute was read by Cllr. Goodyear.

Our thanks go to Henfield Parish Council for organising both events.

SCOOT JAM 2024

Following the success of last year’s Skate Jam, it was now the turn of Henfield’s scooter riders, and on Saturday 11th May eighteen enthusiastic riders took part in the four-hour event, hosted by professional scooter coach Terry Price.

Under the scorching sun, with music pumping out, Terry and his scooting colleague David coached the kids in tricks performance as well as brushing up on any tricks they’d already mastered. They showed off their own skills on the scooter and Terry wowed the kids with his renowned backflip! He even managed to persuade a participant to lie down in front of the ramp to enhance the trick.

Cheered on by parents and friends, the kids took part in some of the competitions. The best trick competition was won by Jack Bishop for completing a “no foot deck grab” and in the main competition, riders were judged on their use of the skate park, tricks performed and general riding skills over two rounds. The scores from both rounds were added together and 1st

place went to Roman Drewitt Barlow, 2nd place Fletcher Flynn, and 3rd place Lucas Campbell. Congratulations to them all.

Terry and David were very impressed by the enthusiasm of the riders, as well as their behaviour and manners. Terry said “Not many parish councils put on these types of events, the children get so much out of it, they are really lucky to have it. Great to see the kids being so supportive and encouraging to each other. We certainly look forward to coming again in the future”.

Big Thanks go to Terry and David for making it a really special day, Henfield Youth Club for opening up their pop up café for refreshments, members of Henfield Parish Council’s Children & Young people’s committee who showed their support on the day, and all the parents and friends who showed up to cheer the kids on.

LOMERS REMOVALS & STORAGE

CELEBRATING 45 YEARS IN 2024

Gary Lomer commenced his removals career in the late 1970’s working for F C Eldridge & Son Ltd under the guidance of Tilden Eldridge. After strong foundations were set with his training as a removal man under Tilden, Gary, founded, G A Lomer Removals in 1979.

Lomers Removals & Storage is a long-standing provider of removals and storage services for clients throughout the Southeast of England.

Gary quickly established his company within the sector, building up relationships with new clients, suppliers and competitors. In the early years he also worked as a contractor with Pickford Removals, F C Eldridge & Son and G B Liners.

Lomers has established a strong presence within its core operational markets. The branding is highly respected and well known amongst regional clients and the strength of its offering ensuring continued custom.

As a company, over the last 45 years, they have experienced considerable growth since its inception, with its reputation for an exceptional service and knowledgeable workforce, (currently 22 employees) ensuring the continued strength of the business.

Gary does not achieve his success alone. His partner both in business and marriage, Vanessa Lomer, joined Lomers in 2005 to manage the business alongside him. Vanessa has driven

Gary Lomer in 1979 Gary’s first van in 1979

the expansion of Gary’s company. She believes the success of Lomers is based on the strong values and integrity of their dedicated team who provide a highly regarded, efficient, professional, and reliable service.

Since 2022, Gary has handed the day to day running of the business to an exceptional management team headed by their General Manager, Chris Brown. His passion is to invest in the team through continued training. The business is a strong advocate of the new BAR apprenticeship schemes that have recently been launched.

Releasing Gary as Managing Director has enabled him to go down to a three day week

and concentrate on his personal passion, Land Rovers. In 2023, he created a side line arm to the business, Lomers Land Rovers. His recent acquisition is Rosie who he is lovingly restoring before selling for his next project.

In conclusion, Gary and Vanessa said, “it has been a privilege to have served our customers over the last 45 years. We express immense gratitude to our team for their loyalty and continued support and to our competitors who we have enjoyed a positive professional relationship throughout our journey.

They will be celebrating 45 years with their team throughout the year.

Many of you knew Malcolm Eastwood, who died very suddenly last year, sadly he had been diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour just weeks before. He contributed immeasurably to our local community, both as a Parish Councillor and a District Councillor as well as a citizen. His loss is deeply felt by the village. He was also a husband, a father and a friend to many.

Henfield is planning to celebrate Malcolm’s life and contribution by walking from Henfield Common to the beautiful Sussex Prairie Gardens on the afternoon of Sunday 14 July 2024 and raising money for charity along the way. Malcolm loved to walk and was often seen with his energetic dogs walking across the Common, taking in part of the planned route. He was

instrumental in building a series of documented circular walks throughout the village, which highlight all the beautiful spaces and views we enjoy, so this walk will be a very fitting tribute to a man who had boundless energy and love for the village.

If you would like to take part (and in true Malcolm spirit EVERYONE is welcome), please arrive at Henfield Common (village end, you won’t miss the gazebo and flags) ready to collect your map and leave between 1 and 2pm. We’ll use smartphone maps if you have one. Many people will be wearing items of mauve clothing which was Malcolm’s favourite colour, and the colours he used when campaigning as an Independent representative at Horsham District Council.

We will aim to arrive at the beautiful Sussex Prairie Gardens around 2-3pm, but please walk at your own pace, it’s not a race! Paul and Pauline McBride have kindly agreed free entrance to their beautiful gardens for this event for all walkers, so please make sure you collect your wristband from one of the starting venues and show it on arrival, this is important for your free entry.

You’re welcome to bring your own picnic as there

Images © BN5 magazine

will be a designated picnic area in the gardens, or you can enjoy delicious drinks, cake and ice cream from the Sussex Prairie Gardens Café. In addition to the spectacular gardens to enjoy, there will also be a number of family friendly events including Lynda from Eco Craft activities, Michael Blencowe biodiversity wildlife expert, and the Soho Village Jazz Band. Children will be able to take part in the Sussex Prairies Rubbing Trail. We are hoping for fine weather on the day so sun cream and a sun hat may be necessary, (or a rain jacket, be prepared!) and of course, suitable footwear! Children are very welcome on all walks but please do ensure they are capable of walking the distances involved. Well behaved dogs are also welcome but they must remain on a lead at all times and please do ensure you clean up after them. Don’t forget to conserve some energy for the return walk home! Alternatively, the Community Minibus is available for those wishing to walk one-way only.

For those who would like to take part but not to walk you are still very welcome, the Community Minibus will be running a return service to the Henfield Hall for a donation of £5 per family.

Malcolm gave an incredible amount of his energy to Henfield and we would like to create an event where we raise money for a charity close to the hearts of Malcolm’s family. They have chosen Brainstrust who operate a 24/7 helpline and

personalised coaching services 365 days a year for brain tumour sufferers, their family and caregivers, which can make such a difference to those going through the unfamiliar territory of navigating a serious illness. We hope that by joining in this fundraising event and contributing to the charity, you can help bring support to others affected by the unthinkable diagnosis of a brain tumour.

Thank you for your support,

On behalf of the Organising Group of friends and colleagues of Malcolm.

Henfield Theatre Company YOUTH THEATRE

The Henfield Theatre Company have introduced targeted workshops and productions for youths of 14 years old and above, and it’s known as Henfield Theatre Company Youth Theatre. We present one or two productions each year at The Henfield Hall, and these have been hugely successful. Whilst children are often invited to join our pantomimes and musicals, the Youth Theatre offers a chance for youths to develop their skills and lead productions before they join the adults in the main shows.

Before each Youth Theatre production takes place, workshops are run during school holidays to gain an understanding of the play and the characters. This then allows the youths to deliver strong auditions before casting and rehearsals commence. Depending on the production, we have been known to include dinner during production nights to make it a real dinner and theatre evening for those attending. Some of our

current cohort of youths have developed their skills with us so much that they have now been successful in being offered places at Theatre Schools. We like to think that we have helped in that progress of their journey!

Please keep an eye on our website and social media pages (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) for information on any upcoming workshops and productions with our Youth Theatre.

in CUP VICTORY HFC MEN’S SENIORS

Huge congratulations to Henfield Football Club Men’s Senior reserves team, who were victorious in their cup game against Southwater, winning the prestigious Tony Kopp Cup! James Bowes from HFC met with Gemma Parsons, manager, and Kenney Wyatt, captain, and the highlights of his report follow here.

On the 10th of May Henfield Men’s Reserve team reached the Tony Kopp Cup final against favourites Southwater, which was being hosted at Billingshurst Football Club. After a nerve-racking start, and with Henfield reduced to ten men, the team were standing strong against a very capable opposition.

60 minutes on, and Henfield took the lead following a corner kick which was tucked away into goal by Jonny Ruiz. Southwater threw everything they have at Henfield and despite some heroic defending and great goalkeeping, they managed to equalise in the 85th minute. Thirty minutes of extra time rapidly ended, and it was on to the inevitable penalties.

Liam Nakazawa-Cowie was in goal for Henfield. His involvement in the game had been crucial and now all eyes were on him. The 300+ crowd was noisy and mostly in favour of Henfield. Liam saved the 5th penalty, to a loud uproar. There was nervous tension as Keiron Hunt stepped up to take the last penalty for Henfield,

he scored an incredible goal high into the back of the net. Cue the celebrations and pitch invasion as Henfield Reserves had won the game and the Tony Kopp Cup, something they hadn’t done since 1967!

The Tony Kopp Cup is for all non-league teams from Division 2 and downwards. It’s known locally as the Horsham FA Cup. It was donated in the 1960s and to this day the cup is presented by the family of Tony Kopp. Winning this cup was a proud moment for Henfield, and especially for their first ever female team manager, Gemma Parsons.

Captain of the team Kenney Wyatt, who has been with the football club for 21 seasons said: “Winning this cup was a massive achievement. The support from everyone who had turned up to watch the game was something I will never forget. I have played in the quarter finals of this cup four times, the semi-final of the cup three times and been in the final twice. I’m so proud of the team and of our manager Gemma.”

Gemma has been the Men’s Senior Reserves manager for the past two seasons. She is the only female manager of a senior men’s team across the whole West Sussex Football League and they believe she could be the first, with records suggesting so for the past twenty years. She joined the team at 27 as an assistant manager after being approached by the then manager

36 | BN5 Magazine sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

Andy Smith. The proposal was to try just one season, but it wasn't long before she stepped up to manage the team.

“Initially it was quite intimidating, and I felt I was being questioned a lot, however we learnt together as a team and I quickly grew in confidence,” said Gemma. “I knew that I could do this job, despite many challenges along the way. The team have always encouraged me and our success in the cup has been a real reward for all our hard work.”

The journey to cup victory wasn’t an easy one. In March, the team reached the quarter-final and the game went to nail-biting penalties. Gemma said: “Special mention must go to Ollie Barrott for his performance in goal during that game, in particular saving three out of five penalties which was a crucial turning point.”

On semi-final match day, the club was greeted with a waterlogged pitch and the strong possibility of the game having to be postponed. Gemma and other volunteers spent five and a half hours removing standing water and prepping the pitch with small lawnmowers. This type of team effort, not just from the squad but supporters too, shows the level of dedication and illustrates why they are worthy cup winners.

It was tense watching penalties being taken during the Cup Final match, but the team had nothing to lose; they came as underdogs and their successes

throughout the tournament were a matter of pride. For Gemma too, she was proud to win a trophy that her father had also once won as a player for Steyning Old Grammarians back in the 1980s. Her dad is now living with early-onset dementia, so the win comes with added emotion for the family.

Gemma’s time as team manager has had its challenges, and it’s likely that she’s had to prove herself more than her male counterparts. Sadly, she’s had experience of mindless comments from a small minority of opposing team members and supporters, but despite this, she is proud that she’s carved a way through a male-dominated sector and that other managers now see her as an equal. She hopes that her experience will encourage other women to get involved in football, after all, 30% of football fans are female, so a broader representation is only logical.

James Bowes, Operations Director of Henfield Football Club said: “The entire club is extremely proud of the Reserve team for their resilience and effort and congratulates them for their huge success this season. Additionally, Gemma’s determination is truly inspiring and we hope this demonstrates that girls and women can have important roles in football. We would like to thank Gemma for her hard work and we recognise the differences she is making.”

The support from everyone who had turned up to watch the game was something I will never forget.

As any parent will testify, the school holidays can be an expensive time, and sometimes it’s hard to think of interesting activities to keep energetic children happy and engaged. The team from Mid-Downland Churches are encouraging you to visit any one of the four Churches in the parish (Poynings, Edburton, Newtimber and Pycombe) and take a look around – they’re all distinctly different, but all very beautiful and welcoming.

For children aged 4-8 years, this summer the focus is on a free woodland school programme based at the beautiful and very rural Newtimber Church.

Designed by Ngaire Digby, who set up and ran the Pre-Prep Woodland School programme at Hurst College for five years, Newtimber Church is offering 12 different activities available for

families to just drop in with a picnic whenever the sun is out! The concept of Woodland or Forest Schools is to provide hands-on learning and fun experiences in the natural environment, it’s childcentred and helps to increase confidence and aid problem solving. Most of all, it’s fun!

A5 clipboards are provided with delightful activities for children to complete. Each has a ‘crib sheet’ for the adult too, adding some background information and deepening their understanding of the natural world.

We don’t want to give too much away, but some examples of activities include: Make a ‘Leaf Kebab’ by collecting different leaves and understanding their shapes; or make a ‘Journey Stick’ where children hunt for a stick in the

40 | BN5 Magazine sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

churchyard, then, as they wander around the mown paths, they collect different bits and pieces that interest them, such as a leaf, a feather, some moss or a flower. String and child-friendly scissors are provided, so these items can be wound round the stick on their journey around the churchyard. This fun activity also improves fine motor skills, and encourages discussion so later, back at home, the Journey Stick can be used as a prompt to retell the walk around the churchyard.

Friends from Poynings village have made six beautiful bird boxes and they are now placed in different trees around the churchyard. Once you’ve done the trail and found all six, you will be invited back over the summer, to learn why they are different shapes, the names of the birds that chose them, the different trees in our churchyard, notice the different leaves and feel the texture of the bark. There will be bark and leaf rubbing materials available, too.

One of our favourite activities will encourage the children to explore inside the church, there are ten very naughty mice hidden around the church

and getting up to all sorts of mischief! See if you can find them all...

Newtimber is a wildlife friendly churchyard, and you will find information sheets on ‘what is flowering in the churchyard this month’ all produced by Margaret Butler, who, with other volunteers, is taking care of this wonderfully peaceful place.

As an open church, visitors have access to the building where there is a water station and a WC. It’s a perfect place to bring a picnic, there is onroad parking and a brick path up to the church. Unfortunately, the access is not wheelchair friendly, but this is a project we are working on to resolve. There are benches to rest and enjoy the views while children can chase, hide or picnic along the mown paths, this is a completely safe area for children to explore.

Next to the church is a field filled with sheep and lambs, and Newtimber Hill sits just south of the churchyard. It’s a tranquil, beautiful space and families of all ages are welcome to enjoy it.

Fi Fi Phone Fun!

Somehow, we managed to hold off allowing my eldest son, Elliott, to have a mobile phone until he turned 12. Consequently, there was no way we he was going to wait a day longer than this, so he was duly presented with a second hand, but remarkably scratch free, smart phone on his birthday. He took to it rather too well and it wasn’t long before he seemed to have the most active message feed in the household! Despite me fiddling with various parental controls, it always seemed to be pinging away in the background and causing distraction and annoyance. I therefore had mixed feelings of disappointment and mild satisfaction when he confessed to having lost his phone 6 weeks into its newfound ownership on a school trip. No amount of “finding my phone” seemed to work with the result that Elliott’s emotions were far less complex – dismay probably summing things up nicely! However, dismay quickly turned to relief when we discovered that the school insurance policy was able to cover the cost of the phone and I am sorry to say that he is now back on comms…

Everyone has positive and negative stories with regards insurance claims, and this is certainly the case in the realm of pet insurance. One definite example of a negative is the scenario where an owner puts in a claim on their pet insurance and, when the policy comes up for renewal, the insurance provider increases the premium way above the previous year. This leaves a dilemma - pay the new, increased premium and maintain insurance for the condition for which they have previously claimed, or change to another provider with a cheaper premium. The issue with changing provider is that a new provider will NOT cover for a “pre-existing condition”, so the pet will no longer be covered for anything related to it.

The whole process has always seemed unfair to me, and I can’t think of many other types of insurance where premiums can be put up and there is no alternative to maintain the same cover. So, I was excited when I learnt about Pet Proactive – an insurance company who provide policies in a new way and I am pleased to say that Hawthorn Vets are one of the first practices to work with them. So, what do they do differently?

• Pet Proactive only work with independent vets and all their premiums are based on the fair pricing at Hawthorn Vets, not the national veterinary market. This means that most of our customers will get competitive premiums for an equivalent policy from another provider.

• Although your pet’s premium will increase with age, Pet Proactive aim to keep their renewal premiums as low as possible so you can keep your pet insured for life.

• Pet Proactive will never increase your premium just because you have made a claim.

• Pet Proactive can access your pet’s medical history at Hawthorn Vets and can confirm any pre-existing conditions or exclusions at the start of the policy so you know exactly what is covered.

• There is one single excess of £100 per year regardless of the number of claims made or the number of conditions. Cover ranges from £4,000 to £12,000 per year.

Overall, I feel this a very positive change in the field of pet insurance. More information is available on our website, but if you are interested in getting a quote for your pet, all you need to do is visit www.petproactive.pet and enter your mobile number to get instant quotes. Please note that your pet will need to be registered at Hawthorn Vets and be under 6 years of age to be eligible. If you aren’t registered, you can do so by contacting us. Now time for me to find out if my car tyres are covered after driving into that pothole...

Coping with the Menopause in the workplace

The menopause is a natural progression which affects all biological women and is defined as the last menstrual period. It is a retrospective diagnosis that can be confirmed when a woman has missed her periods for 12 consecutive months. The gradual transition over the preceding years is known as ‘the perimenopause’. During this time, the ovaries gradually produce less oestrogen, periods may become irregular, fertility decreases (although pregnancy can still occur) and women may begin to experience menopausal symptoms. The British Menopause Society cites 55 common symptoms attributable to the menopause. These include changes in menstrual cycle, vasomotor symptoms (sweats and flushes), insomnia, sleep disturbance, tiredness and fatigue, low libido, sexual dysfunction, painful urination UTIs, vaginal dryness, irritability, mood changes, poor concentration, weight gain, headaches, palpitations, joint aches and pains, impaired cognitive function (‘brain fog’), low confidence and self-esteem, and difficulties in decisionmaking. No one symptom is diagnostic, and many other symptoms are possible. Due to increasing life expectancy, women are now spending more than 30% of their life in a post-menopausal state. Given that around 3.5 million women aged between 50 and 65 are currently employed in the UK, the menopause has huge socioeconomic implications. The menopause hits at an age when many women are enjoying more senior and substantive roles. Coping with menopause in a workplace environment can be challenging and many women still feel reluctant to talk openly to their employers about their symptoms.

Although some workplaces are now acknowledging the impact of the menopause and putting into place workplace strategies, many remain poorly equipped. Women still feel that certain symptoms remain shrouded in stigma and are often unwilling to disclose the extent of their problems, going to lengths to try to mask symptoms at work. Many women drop their hours during the menopause and up to 10% actually stop working altogether.

Most women (around 80%) will have symptoms relating to their menopause. One in four women define these symptoms as having a severe impact on their family, work and home lives. But in spite of this less than 50% of perimenopausal symptomatic women will access medical help. Ideally, all women should be encouraged to access individualised specialist advice on how they can optimize their menopause transition.

The rationale for hormonal replacement is not only to treat these symptoms and improve quality of life but also to minimise the impact of chronic disease such as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. A major opportunity exists at the onset of the menopause to identify longer-term health risks and initiate prevention strategies. For younger women under the age of 40 with primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), the recommendation is to offer HRT even if they do not have any symptoms to mitigate these risks.

Oestrogen replacement can be taken in the form of tablets, patches, gels or sprays. It can also be administered vaginally, which is useful for local urogenital symptoms. A second important hormone is progesterone which can also be administered via a tablet, patch or a Mirena coil. Testosterone replacement can also be considered for women with persistent troublesome low libido when all other factors have been considered.

“Due to increasing life expectancy, women are now spending more than 30% of their life in a post-menopausal state.”

For those wanting to avoid HRT, or where HRT needs to be prescribed with caution, non-hormonal alternatives can be considered. Alternative remedies and lifestyle intervention such as diet, exercise, smoking cessation, alcohol reduction and stress management all play an important role and cognitive behavioral therapy has proven benefits for those experiencing low mood, sleep disturbance and anxiety.

Innovate for High Performance

Those of us who precede millennials may remember a time when, in exchange for some hard graft, workforces would receive nominal annual pay rises, perhaps a Christmas bonus and, if they stayed the course, recognition for long service.

Today, such reward schemes are as outmoded as our grandparents’ carriage clocks – and yet still many business owners fear that by setting up commission structures, they will be eroding their profits.

The reality is the opposite. Bonuses and commission payments are not about giving money away – they are about creating a highperformance culture.

Effective schemes reward, motivate and challenge employees, while also generating healthy competition and building team ethos. They can help businesses control salary costs, tether valuable employees and shed those who are not performing. When well-designed, they will increase productivity along with staff morale. At the heart of most innovative and successful reward programmes is the practice of Management by Objectives (MBO). This involves developing a set of milestones for employees, with agreed timescales and monitoring. Performance needs to be aligned to SMART principles – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timescale. Schemes also need to be fluid, allowing for the updating of objectives and stretching of bonuses for those who exceed targets.

MBO is a system that works exceptionally well with sales and business development employees, often described as ‘hunters’. But it can also be adapted for ‘farmers’ – those employees in account management and customer service who nurture long-standing client relationships.

It is vital for SMEs to understand that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ scheme. We regularly design carefully thought through structures that incentivise employees, while minimising pitfalls.

Here are some tips:

- Don’t link commission to salary If you do, you could end up inadvertently rewarding poor performance. Commissions and bonuses recognise exceptional work an

employee has done; salaries pay for the work that employees do day-to-day.

- Don’t automatically offer welcome bonuses

They can be a tool for attracting people you want, but they are a risk, because you are paying before you have any evidence of performance. Try and build some goal-setting into any sign-on payments.

- Don’t pay attendance bonuses

These are common in manufacturing, but are often counterproductive, because once an employee has been absent for some reason, he or she has lost the incentive to maintain an attendance record. The same advice applies to blanket lateness and error targets.

- Don’t forget that by law… employees must not be penalised for taking holidays and that consideration needs to be built into any bonus and commission scheme.

- Do revise any archaic bonuses currently in your pay structure

Christmas bonuses are a nicety. Long service awards may show appreciation for loyalty, but they can encourage apathy. Start thinking about how you can replace such schemes with more targeted incentives.

- Do commission for low hanging fruit

But, grade your reward scales so that you are offering increased sums for more challenging sales.

- Do stretch bonuses

If you know you can get more from your team, offer extra incentives for additional sales in a given quarter.

- Do base bonus and commission payments on client invoices

Paid to ensure your sales force secure client payments.

- Do consider end of contract bonuses

These can be highly persuasive in keeping someone on the team until the end of a project, and they need not cost an employer any more if the contract terms are positioned effectively.
