A tribute to Malcolm Eastwood

Editor’s Letter Welcome to the February issue of BN5. We were thrilled to hear that no less than five Henfield firefighters - Tony Hills, Jim Mundy, Andy Tullett, Gary Singleton and Darren Ware received prestigious long service awards from West Sussex Fire & Rescue at a formal awards ceremony in Arundel late last year. It’s a wonderful achievement, not least because Henfield is a fully ‘retained’ unit. I went along to find out why Henfield Fire Station is such a great place to work. They are always looking for new recruits, so please have a read on page 28 and find out if the role will suit you. There was great shock and sadness across the village in December with the news that Horsham District Councillor and ex-Chairman of Henfield Parish Council Malcolm Eastwood had passed away after a very short illness. The loss to Henfield is enormous, Malcolm’s contribution to village life was immeasurable and his energy and enthusiasm boundless. There will be a memorial service for Malcolm at St Peter’s Church in February, all are very welcome. We send our deepest condolences to Carol, Peter and Annabel, as well as all Malcolm’s friends in Henfield.

New appointment for Reverend Canon Paul Doick who leaves Henfield

Thank you Henfield Football Club!

A big thank you to children and managers from Henfield Football club for their lovely community gifts this Christmas. As part of their ongoing ‘Score some Smiles’ campaign, children drew Christmas cards, decorated pots containing Christmas floral decorations and gave gifts of sweets and biscuits to others around the village. Many recipients were residents and staff in local care homes, as well as people throughout the village who volunteer and do things for others. At BN5 we were thrilled to receive gifts and beautiful cards, as were two of the volunteers from Henfield Food Bank, Dave Malkin and Roger Bentley. A big thank you to all the children and adults involved - you definitely succeeded in scoring smiles!

As many of you are now aware, the Bishop of Chichester has recently appointed me the new Rector of St Paul’s Chichester and St Peter’s Westhampnett. Jan and I are therefore moving away from Henfield in the next few months - my last Sunday here will be 31 March (Easter Day) and I should be installed in Chichester on St George’s day, 23 April. I will miss Henfield and the many people I have worked with over the 9½ years I have been here. I am leaving 3 months short of my 10th anniversary and it’s been a huge privilege to serve the community here. Leaving brings me mixed emotions but I feel the time is right. I’m sure there will be time to say goodbye to most of you before my final services on the 31 March, but if not – thank you so much for working with me.

The Rev’d Canon Paul Doick

Peter’s Recycling Progress

To date Peter has handed in 1.27 tons of tin cans for recycling – which is approximately 64,000 cans! In addition to this he has recycled just over 5 tons of metal, all of which has allowed him to plant 35 trees so far! Congratulations Peter, this is an impressive sum and a huge recycling effort.

Henfield Parish Choir needs you!

The Henfield Parish choir are actively recruiting more singers to our choir - you do not have to be a church-goer or be able to read music, you just need to be willing to do a bit of homework occasionally! We rehearse on Friday evenings from 6-7.30pm and we lead the mass setting and sing an anthem at the morning service on second Sundays at St Peter’s Henfield. On fifth Sundays we lead Choral Evensong which moves between the three churches of the parish, Henfield, Woodmancote and Shermanbury. Other choral events include a Requiem for Remembrance and Christmas Carol services. Next year we will lead Choral Matins for four services at St. Peter’s Woodmancote – a great opportunity to get to know a traditional service close in style to Evensong, marking a different part of the church day. We are not yet a gowned choir but we do have the use of a choir vestry and benefit from a substantial music library. We also have a new grand piano at St Peter’s Henfield and a traditional church organ, both of which we use for concerts and services. For further information or if you would like to come and join us or email me at sidonie.winter@live.co.uk or call me on 07973 315413.

Henfield History Group

Which other local society would take you from a History of British TV Crime Fighters to Glorious Goodwood via Victorian Street Life in one season of talks? You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy the Henfield History Group! Following our move to the Henfield Hall, with its great accommodation and facilities, this very sociable and welcoming group now has over 165 members. Our monthly meetings not only provide a presentation on a wide variety of topics, but also the opportunity to socialise over refreshments and much more. Highlights of 2023 include: our summer outing to Dover Castle, a summer BBQ and a fascinating walk at Tidemills. We recently formed a very popular family history research group and this runs alongside our lending library of books

of local historical interest for the benefit of members. We’re proud to call ourselves a true community group and are delighted to support local good causes through our monthly raffles which are well supported. We also collect donations of cash, and bags of food and other essential items for the Food Bank at most meetings, raising around £400 in 2023. During the year we also raised over £300 for local good causes for children by selling gardening tools, gloves and shoes to members generously donated to us by local Woodmancote company Zenlo. We look forward to doing more to support the Henfield community in 2024!

A big thank you from the Foodbank

It means a lot to us all to know that we continue to have the support of our local community in helping people in need through these difficult times. We would particularly like to thank Brass Fusion again for supporting the Foodbank at their recent concert. With over 150 items donated, we now have a full load to take up to the Horsham Matters depot! We would also like to express our thanks to Henfield History Group for their regular monthly collections of essential items and cash throughout 2023. Thanks so much.

Awards Success for Tottington Manor Squirrel Scouts What a year is has been for the team at Tottington Manor! Having not yet completed their third year of trading, 2023 became a bumper year when their hard work and investment in the property was recognised. With strong Sustainability values, they received a Green Tourism Bronze Award, the only hotel in the area to receive this, following huge efforts and investment in energy saving equipment. Their success continued after being nominated and winning the LUXLife Best Rural Accommodation & Restaurant in the South Downs, closely followed by a Blue Ribbon Good Food Award voted for by our guests. Their awards entries with Visit England and The Beautiful South Awards saw further recognition, being awarded a Commendation for Best Small Hotel in the South of England alongside a Bronze Award for Best Wedding Venue when faced against such strong competition throughout the South East. Helen Pomery, Director of Tottington Manor said “We couldn’t be more proud of an immense year of achievement for us. Our guests are at the heart of everything we do and as a team we always strive for the best quality and service we can possibly offer. To see our team rewarded like this is incredible and we would like to thank all the guests who have supported us since we arrived in March 2021 and look forward to the years to come.”

Squirrel Scouts is the new section to Scouting and caters for the four and five year olds who were getting very impatient at having to wait until they were six to be able to start their Scouting adventure with Beavers! Henfield’s first ‘Drey’ is called the Tanyard Squirrel Scout Drey, and takes its name from the Groups old Venture Scout unit that disbanded with the formation of the replacement Explorer Scouts. Our Squirrels have really taken to the fun of Scouting, and that is a huge credit to all the new leadership team at Squirrels who are all parents and have done so well to build not just

FEBRUARY 2024 | News this new section but also the confidence and determination within this cohort. It was a huge thrill at the annual Scouts carol concert to be able to present the first two Henfield Squirrel Scouts with their Chief Scout Acorn awards, something I am sure we’ll be presenting more of in the very near future. A massive well done to both recipients! Although successful (proven in the large waiting list we now have for Squirrels), unfortunately without more parent leaders we are unable to open a second Drey.

Danielle’s Channel Swim for Mencap Charity

I’m Danielle Kaelin, mother to Stanley and Barnaby, wife to local Vet Fabian, associate Director at Hawthorn Vets and ‘Otter’ to Henfield Beaver Scouts and I’m excited (and very nervous) to announce that I’ll be swimming the English Channel in relay in July 2024 as part of the Mencap Marvels Squad. I’m one of four local swimmers who’ll be swimming the Channel under the strict Channel Association regulations. This means only wearing a swimsuit, goggles and hat - no wetsuit allowed! We’ll start in Dover and take it in turns to swim an hour each towards France. To qualify, we’ll be

completing an official 2 hour ‘skins’ (no wetsuit) swim in early June with water temperatures less than 15.5 Celsius, in order to obtain the Channel Association ‘licence’ to be able to go ahead with our challenge. Our training involves plenty of long swims, lots of cold water acclimatising and also practicing swimming in the sea at night as it’s likely our swim will start in the dark. We’re delighted to be doing this to raise money for Mencap, a charity whose vision is for the UK to be the best place in the world for people with a learning disability to live happy and healthy lives. I couldn’t be prouder to be raising money to support them. BP and Trefoil Guilds, the Beavers and Cubs, Youth Club, the Henfield Ukelele Group (who gave us a musical hug!), the ladies of our wonderful Christmas Chorus and many individual performers who added to the variety of the evening. Steve Bailey and Friends took us back to Silent Night in the trenches and Pete Tiplady got us singing a memorable rendition of Mrs Fogerty’s Christmas Cake! Behind the scenes a small army of ‘Mince Pie Monitors’ and ‘St Barnabas Elves’ organised our raffle and served copious amounts of mulled wine - no wonder the audience singing was loud and hearty! Huge thanks must also go to Denny Field and Sarah Mattock, our chorus master and pianist.

Henfield’s Year of Biodiversity

This year is Henfield’s Year of Biodiversity and to celebrate, Henfield Parish Council and local community groups are teaming up together to organise a wide range of nature-inspired events and workshops. We hope these encourage people of all ages and abilities to take an active role in recording and enhancing our green spaces, and that 2024 will leave a lasting natural legacy in the village. One of the events we have created is a project within iNaturalist – an app which allows you to identify the plants and animals around you whilst generating data for science and conservation. Any significant records can be taken from this data and passed on to the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Biodiversity Records Office which in turn, will help conserve the biodiversity within Henfield. It’s easy to take part in, you just download the iNaturalist app and start recording things that you see around the parish. The records will automatically be uploaded to the project page for everybody to see. Don’t worry if you’re not sure what it is that you’ve found, there’s a global community of scientists and naturalists ready to assist! We’ll be running an introductory session to iNaturalist on Thursday 8 February from 7pm in the Garden Room at Henfield Hall. This workshop will teach you how to use the app to create records, how it can help you with identification, and how the iNaturalist community works together to help each other learn. Please visit www.henfield.gov.uk/2024-biodiversity for more information. Happy hunting!

Henfield Friends of St Barnabas

I’m sure that anyone who came to our ‘Christmas is Coming’ concert would agree that it was big fun! We were thrilled to welcome over 70 performers who entertained us, with ages ranging from 7 to 93 - It was a real ‘community’ event. But where to begin with who to thank? The 12 | BN5 Magazine

We’re greatly indebted to the many generous local businesses who sponsored the event with their donations and raffle prizes. The result was astonishing, with nearly £2,500 raised by the concert and boosted to £3,500 with the kind donations that followed. As you know, most of St Barnabas’ running costs depend on such fundraising so I’ll leave you to reflect on how much your support brought to our Hospice. We thank you all for coming and look forward to seeing you again next year!

Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens and the Surrey Sculpture Society have launched a new collaboration for 2024, showcasing local artists from Sussex and Surrey. The Society, which has previously exhibited during the summer months at the West Sussex estate, has designed and curated a new Art Walk featuring over 100 sculptures. The exhibition will run year-round in the Grade I Listed gardens, with admission included in the entrance price to Leonardslee. The design of the Art Walk and the artful location of each sculpture take advantage of the setting with its diverse range of trees and shrubs, often rare and threatened in the wild. The trail winds down to the estate’s seven lakes and conveniently ends with a return shuttle service. Visitors are treated to an extensive exhibition of affordable sculptures, starting from just £175, in a range of styles and sizes, suitable for almost any garden or home. The works are by both established and emerging artists and are made in a wide range of materials including bronze, resin, glass, metal, wood, stone, ceramic and found objects. Admission to the Surrey Sculpture Society’s Sculpture Art Walk Trail is included in the

entrance price to Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens. The venue is open daily from 9am to 4pm, off-peak in the autumn and winter, and 9am to 5pm in the spring and summer.

Hamfelds – the shop with (almost) everything! There are certain shops in Henfield which keep the community together and serve a purpose greater than the transactions across the counter. Hamfelds is one such store, and it’s been such a pleasure to see the shop grow and diversify to serve the needs of everyone in the village. Chris Ditchburn took over at the helm in 2020, after some considerable time involved with the shop after the former owner and friend of the village Olivia Pugh passed away. Chris and Olivia were a fantastic team, the mark Olivia made on the business is still very apparent and her untimely loss was a real blow to the business and the village, as well as her friends and family. Chris’s achievement of bringing the shop back into a new post-pandemic era, brighter and with more stock lines, has been a labour of love. The competition of cheap online imports has been a huge threat, as it is to lots of small retail outlets which have to carry the overheads many larger businesses don’t. He’s managed to carve a path through this and remain competitive, he’s been brave in trialling new stock lines and has made a policy of pushing forward and making the shop look enticing. Chris recognises that he can’t compete with some online offers, but what he can provide is high quality items which defy the disposable and breakable norms where he can. He is passionate about returning to a ‘mendable’ society, a policy which is reassuring after years of frustration for customers buying goods which are manufactured with deliberate obsolescence. Added to that, it seems

that online deliveries are getting less and less reliable, so we’re all very grateful to have the wellstocked convenience of Hamfelds on our doorstep! Chris’s latest product line, due in February, is a whole range of haberdashery supplies including the entire range of Gutermann threads. As any dressmaker will tell you, these are the very best quality, and the vast colour range will be a huge draw. He is also pushing forward with more small electrical appliances from trusted brands, a perfectly curated range of very useful goods which will be very popular, and so refreshing not to be shopping ‘blindfolded’ online! It’s almost impossible to go into Hamfelds and leave with only the product you were looking for – and this is the key to Chris’s success. It’s an enormous pleasure to find a full range of items, all beautifully displayed, and find those special things which are so hard to buy online!

A tribute to Malcolm, who did so much for Henfield In this article, we are celebrating the life of Malcolm Eastwood. Malcolm died in December after a very short illness, his sudden passing sent shock waves through the village. His legacy for Henfield will live on through the various projects he initiated and the clubs and groups he supported.

Malcolm was born on 4th May 1959 in Gillingham, Kent. He was a life-long Gillingham FC supporter, after being taken to his first match at just seven years old. His parents continued to live in the town and Malcolm returned frequently, making sure he saw a home game when he could. Malcolm achieved impressive career success in banking with HSBC. He met Carol in Hove in 1990, when he was Branch Manager and she had just become Area HR manager. He subsequently joined the Area Team with responsibility for all the branches in East Sussex. It wasn’t long before they were married and settled in Henfield. Peter and Annabel, born in 1994 and 1996, came along to complete the family unit, affectionately referred to by Malcolm as ‘Team Eastwood’. Malcolm and Carol always had each other’s backs, supporting each other and working together, finding the funny side of a tricky situation and respecting the advice offered to each other. The dynamic worked well, and as the children grew up Carol stepped back from her career to manage family life while Malcolm became CEO of HSBC in Kazakhstan. He went on to become Global Head of Change Delivery within the company before his retirement in 2014.

‘the beautiful game’ was an influence. His unique skill was in motivating others. He truly believed in people and enthused them to keep trying with his contagious energy. This is a common thread running through the countless letters and messages the family have received about Malcolm, his incredibly positive approach to life made Malcolm the man he was.

Sport was important to Malcolm and some of his happiest times were spent coaching at This phrase, ‘Team Eastwood’ crops up a Henfield Football Club, making sure all the boys lot in the story of Malcolm’s life, and not just got a game, regardless of their level of skill. He concerning family. He loved being part of a team encouraged the boys to enjoy the game, and and recognised the power of people working many, including his own son Peter, continue that together for a common cause, perhaps his love of love of participating in team sports to this day. Later, he was enormously supportive of the Club in their various expansion ambitions and his support at HFC will be sorely missed.

Malcolm was a key support er of Henfield Football Club, from being a coach with his children back in the day righ t up to the last couple of months where Mal colm was working with us on new ideas for the future. The Club will miss his upbeat personality and helpful nature, he was a credit to his family and to the village of Henfield. Joe Penfold, Henfield Foo tball Club 22 | BN5 Magazine

…When the local district elections came forward last year, he asked me if I would be prepared to act as a second in his application standing as an Independent District Councillor. I was only too pleased to do this as I had every confidence he would make an excellent District Councillor. Sadly, Henfield has been deprived of a man of great ability and energy who has always had Henfield`s best interest at heart and fulfilled whatever role he undertook on Henfield`s behalf to the full. Ray Osgood When he retired, Malcolm wanted to give something back and share the skills he had developed during his career. He became a Parish Councillor in 2015, which is how we came to know him at BN5. He was always a pleasure to work with, full of ideas for improving the village, making things ‘work’ better (from road systems to clunky management systems) and always pushing to get extra funding for Henfield. He fought our corner as a village and made things happen, with an enormous grin on his face and an Excel spreadsheet in his hand. In the purest terms, it was hard not to be motivated after a meeting with Malcolm, and before you knew it you found yourself getting involved! Malcolm became Chairman of Henfield Parish Council in 2017 and his time in office was out of the ordinary for two reasons; the first was the threat of Mayfield’s development, which Malcolm defended the village against with huge energy a father/ I first met Malcolm when he was 9-yearmy and FC field coach/referee at Hen for both its ble nota team a d joine son old ip – reflecting competitiveness and sportsmansh thought it s boy The . ence influ s olm’ Malc a banker”... hilarious to chant “the referee’s Mayfield n whe n We worked together agai field and he Hen ing aten thre was ns Market Tow He was a BS. His work in galvanising other villages and Parish Councils to stand firm was instrumental in the success of the LAMBS (Locals Against Mayfield Building Sprawl) campaign, although he was always aware that the threat still lurked. The second enormous challenge was the Covid pandemic, when, as a trustee of the Henfield Haven his organisational skills were invaluable, helping to save the Henfield Haven from threat of closure. His fine work in a time of crisis and will always be recognised. As HPC Chairman he led the village response to helping people who were isolated, including the formation of the Henfield Helpline. He teamed up with Henfield Medical Centre in their bid to become a vaccination centre, ensuring vulnerable residents were able to get vaccinated as soon as possible. It wasn’t just about solving problems for Malcolm, but about proactive change and improvement. His work-rate was phenomenal, he threw his weight behind all sorts of community projects including

The Malcolm we all knew was like an iceberg, we all saw what he did, but there was so much more that we never saw. Aside from his seemingly inexhaustible fund of stories and anecdotes, I knew Malcolm for his love of music. He relished telling of when he played emergency bass for Status Quo (yes, he did!). Malcolm did not do things by halves, if he was going to be involved, he was 110% involved and not just a bystander. Henfield Fire Station

a fine tradition of community service Did you know that the firefighters at Henfield Fire Station, a retained unit, have combined experience of almost 190 years? There’s the recently retired Tony Hills coming in at 40 years, Andy Tullett at 36 and Watch Manager Jim Mundy with 30 years. They, along with Gary Singleton and Darren Ware who have both served for 20 years each, collected long service awards in a prestigious ceremony at Arundel Castle back in November. Congratulations to them all for such a significant achievement. So, why is Henfield so unique, as a fully retained station, and one which attracts such loyalty? It was my second visit to meet the team (we featured them on our cover back in June 2018), the first was on a much sunnier Monday evening during their training session. This time it’s January and a little frostier outside, but the welcome is just as warm. To clarify, Henfield doesn’t have any full-time staff, but it’s manned by qualified retained firefighters. These are just as highly qualified as ‘regular’ full time firefighters, and they have their own careers and day jobs. After the rigorous training programme and two years’ probation, they’re qualified and start to be ‘on call’. Each firefighter commits to different weekly on-call hours, ranging from 40 (minimum) right up to 120 hours a week, plus a one-night a week training session. Many of the Henfield crew run their own businesses, some work shifts (there are currently 28 | BN5 Magazine

two pilots and one cabin crew member at Henfield) and some work very close to Henfield. If they’re on call then they need to live a maximum of a fourminute journey time to the Fire Station, which is opposite the Shell Garage at Golden Square. There are no age limitations (aside from being over 17.5 years on application), but there are medical and fitness tests which need to be passed on a regular basis, the ‘bleep test’. This involves ladder climbs & lifts, casualty evacuation, enclosed spaces tests and equipment assembly and carry tests. It’s an achievable test but does need some physical strength and agility – it would be suited to most people (both male and female) of decent physical fitness levels. That’s just the start, the other attributes, if you feel keen to join, you may already find you have. The ability to work as a team and put your crew and their wellbeing above your own. The knowledge to know that someone else’s life may be in your hands. The ability to take orders and remain calm. The ability to make a decent cup of tea and get on well with others is also an advantage! The role would work around school hours if you’re thinking about going back to work after having children. Female applicants are encouraged, and if you’re at all worried about being in a male dominated environment, I can reassure you, Henfield is the most open and friendly station with no sense of one-upmanship or bravado, there is no space for egos in the Fire Service. The role would also work for someone who runs their www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

in their combined experience, of knowing when someone needs to talk or when they need to have their own space. The team acknowledge that the ‘hard calls’ can be challenging. But these are the ones that can make a difference, they know how important their presence is and the professional autopilot of ‘doing the job’ kicks in, even if sometimes the outcome isn’t good. The families will always know that people who cared did the very best they could.

This March sees Henfield Theatre Company presenting another comedy for your enjoyment. Written by David Hampshire, “Funny Turns” is delightful, funny, sad, and exactly what good theatre is all about. It’s a glimpse into an old-fashioned way of thinking and believing. It reminds us of that wonderful era long ago when we had no TVs, cell phones, videos, or social media and when entertainers devoted their lives to our amusement each at a cost to themselves. Their life was artificial, insecure and rootless, yet it had an excitement and a charm that kept the actors acting and the comedians telling jokes.

Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men... JOIN US! Like many local clubs, Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men, known as the Chancs, are looking to recruit more dancers and musicians to join them. But why even try Morris Dancing? According to new Squire (the leader) Les, is all about the traditions it maintains, as well as the social and fun side of the hobby. And why ‘Chancs’? “Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men is quite a mouthful to say,” says Les. “So we’re often referred to simply as Chancs!”

Morris dancing is really quite old, but no one really knows how old. The earliest known mention of Morris dance is dated to 1448 and records the ‘payment of seven shillings to Morris dancers’ by the Goldsmiths’ Company in London. Later in the 16th century Morris Dancing became linked to village fetes and May Day celebrations. Shakespeare said “As fit as a Morris for May Day” and William Kemp danced a solo Morris dance from London to Norwich in 1600.

Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men were named after the famous landmark near Steyning in West Sussex – a circle of trees on the top of the South Downs planted in 1760. Many legends are attached to the Ring. Its origins are said to derive from Satan’s labours in digging Devil’s Dyke. Chanctonbury was one of the clods of earth thrown up as he attempted to dig a channel through the Downs to drown the Weald. However, since the Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men took to dancing on the top of the hill on First of May, sightings of the satanic apparition have become a rarity. 34 | BN5 Magazine

Richard Bates, Henfield resident and consultant solicitor at Cognitive Law in Brighton, considers how trusts claiming to protect assets from tax and care fees are usually too good to be true. In the last two months alone, I’ve been instructed by four different clients who had ‘property protection trusts’ (also called ‘wealth preservation trusts’, or similar). Each had relied on the advice of non-solicitor advisors to variously save inheritance tax (IHT), probate fees and care fees. In all cases, the legal work was done remotely by companies who aren’t regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. In each of these cases (and every case I’ve come across in over 23 years of practising), this type of product was (a) unnecessary, (b) not provided with sufficient care to ensure that the client actually understood what they were letting themselves in for and (c) typically cost £2,000-£8,000. To be clear, it’s rarely a good idea to give your property away, even to a trust, as this leaves you without ownership, control and difficulty in arranging future finance. Most trusts I’ve seen were sold to save IHT, including when the client had no tax liability. Broadly, spouses or civil partners can, between them, give up £650,000 tax-free, and a further £350,000 if their main residence passes to direct descendants. For the majority of the UK, this means that no IHT will be payable. In any event, unless you pay an open market rent whilst you continue to live there, the gift of your home to the trust will be caught by ‘reservation of benefit’ rules and not count as a gift at all for tax purposes, not even the ‘7-year rule’ applies. ‘Discretionary trusts’ are used for these products, and clients seem unaware that these trusts are taxable. For trust assets over £325,000, there is an ‘entry charge’ (20%). However, clients don’t expect the 10 yearly 6% charge and so don’t budget for it. There may also be an ‘exit charge’ depending on the trust’s lifespan. This is pretty heard to bear for those clients that didn’t have an IHT problem in the first place. The other (misleading) selling point of these trusts is that they will ‘protect the home from care fees’. A ‘Deliberate Deprivation of Assets’ is where someone intentionally diminishes their wealth to accelerate local authority care contributions. Local authorities routinely try to use this to refuse to make contributions. Their case is much easier to prove as a person ages, where there’s a relevant diagnosis or where the trust receiving the gift is advertised to ‘save care fees’! Unwitting clients can pay thousands for a questionable scheme, provided by an unregulated limited company, often with insufficient professional indemnity insurance, meaning there’s little recourse when things go wrong. There are various ways to protect your wealth, including simply having the right will. Celebrating 25 Years of Henfield Birdwatch 2024 sees Henfield Birdwatch celebrating its 25th anniversary and planning a great programme of events throughout the year, which all tie in with it also being the designated ‘Year of Biodiversity’ in the parish. We are delighted to kick off our year of celebrations with a celebrity lecture by local professional wildlife photographer David Plummer. David lives in Small Dole and made a decision to try and forge a life and career in wildlife photography at the end of the last century and with his proximity to Woods Mill, he began running photography courses for the Sussex Wildlife Trust. Within a few years, he expanded his range by buying a small piece of woodland in the north of Sussex where he set up a badger-watching hide and for many years, people experienced very close views of these wonderful creatures.

close views of Tawny Owls in his own garden and at the Knepp Re-wilding Project, particularly focusing on Little Owls and Kingfishers.

Fifteen years ago, David was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease which is devastating for anyone but when your career is in photography As his experience and expertise grew as a it has particular consequences but he has photographer, so did his horizons and over the continued to adapt the way he took photographs next few years he organised safaris to the Pantanal and has still managed to carry on and develop in Brazil to photograph Jaguars and to Africa his work. In 2017, he wrote a book ‘7 Years of where again he specialised in the big cats but also Camera Shake’ which highlighted the fantastic Gorillas in Uganda. Alongside this, David began to pictures he has taken over the years and also develop experiences for photographers to capture described how he adapted his life and work to coping with the disease. For a few weeks, the book topped the non-fiction best seller’s chart. Home and Away –

25 Years of Photographing Wildlife Around the World

Friday February 23rd at 7.30pm in Henfield Hall

This is a ticketed event so booking in advance is required. The talk is free to Henfield Birdwatch members who will still need to obtain a ticket, £3.00 to non-members. Tickets can be obtained from the Henfield Birdwatch website. https://www.henfieldbirdwatch.co.uk

01273 494002

In all this time his media profile grew, with a number of appearances on the ‘One Show’ and more recently he appeared on Hamza Yassin’s ‘Strictly Birds of Prey’ that featured the Tawny Owls in his garden and the same owls were filmed for David Attenborough’s series ‘the Wild Isles’. Before Christmas, he found out that a film made about him called ‘15 Years’ has been nominated for a best film award at the Cannes Film Festival 2024. If all this wasn’t enough, for a number of years now, David has been a wildlife and conservation advisor to Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas. Throughout the last 25 years, David has maintained a close association with Henfield Birdwatch, providing many photographs for our survey books, being a member of the committee and doing previous talks for us. He also undertook a survey of Tawny Owls breeding in the parish during the winter of 2013/14 and estimated there were 37 territories across the parish.

Hugh Daniels, Steve Bailey and Rose Sharp, three of the original team of organisers.

Henfield Computer Club is 10 years old! It all started in 2013 when 35 reconditioned computers were donated to the village. A subgroup of Henfield Community Partnership, Action for Older People, organised an information day where the main topic was ‘Getting Connected’ and addressed the difficulties many older people had in using a computer and getting online. They were amazed that 61 people came along!

they naturally made friends at the Club and became able to communicate better online. With technology moving at such a huge pace, it was important that the Club was responsive to change and to need – and it’s been a huge success because of this openness to change.”

After presentations and demonstrations, over 20 people were interested in ongoing support. Two training sessions were organised but it became clear that individual needs and interests varied widely. This was how the Computer Club was born. One of the founding organisers, Steve Bailey, said: “Like all good organisations, the Computer Club was born from a position of need. We were inundated at the Get Connected meeting and knew we had the potential to really help people with a new skill-set, and it turned out that we could also give people confidence and 48 | BN5 Magazine

FEBRUARY 2024 | Local interest

The meetings were held at the Leisure Centre for the first couple of years in the room that is now Sharky’s. With the development of this soft play area, the club had to find another venue. The Garden Room at Henfield Hall was ideal but the hall had no WIFI. A couple of the club’s mentors made it their mission to address this. The Hall now has excellent WIFI throughout the building. At about that time the club moved from being run by Action for Older People and became an independent group open to anyone. However, it remained under the umbrella of Henfield Community Partnership as a service to the community.

“Our mentors are patient and want to help, and we know the Club has helped many people and kept them safe online” Today the club has over 130 members and 14 mentors. It is not only a place to come to learn or get help, but also somewhere to meet others socially. The club has regular presentations with topics suggested by members, often on subjects such as keeping your passwords safe and avoiding internet scams, or using social media effectively.

These talks are open not just to members but to anyone interested and are very popular. You will find them advertised in BN5 magazine and on the Computer Club Facebook page. Rose Sharp, another founding organiser, said: “Henfield Computer Club has never been geeky! Just people helping each other and taking away the stigma of not understanding the internet. Our mentors are patient and want to help, and we know the Club has helped many people and kept them safe online.” The club is unique in the Horsham District and members come from far and wide. Our existence is thanks to the original members of Action for Older People and their foresight in creating a Computer Club. Rose is still with us and spoils us with delicious biscuits and the occasional cake to have with our drinks. If you are interested in joining the Computer Club as a member or mentor, we meet in the Garden Room, Henfield Hall every Wednesday 10am to 12pm. Whether member or mentor, we all find we are all still learning! Annual membership is £5 and £2 any week you attend. This includes refreshments!

Tax implications of divorce/separation Whilst divorce can have some serious tax implications, the act of separation is in fact more significant from a tax perspective. Understandably, many couples may have no immediate appetite for addressing anything beyond their emotional fall-out. They may lose sight of the real financial benefits to the family as a whole that can be achieved if a coordinated separation is put in place with clear timelines and tax elections. Early and accurate fact finding is necessary. It is essential to look at where parties reside and are domiciled for tax purposes. Tax advice in all countries in which the couple has assets should be taken without delay. Most tax regimes run to a calendar year, the UK being an exception. It can take some time for both parties to work out what is in the financial pot. It may take a bit longer, even with legal and financial advice, to identify and explore the range of possible financial outcomes. In legal terms, there is no one right solution. Instead there is a range of possible blends of division of capital and income, which can be tailored for each family. If possible, values of assets and potential tax calculations should be made and agreed between advisers and the couple. Assets are normally valued just before negotiations start, rather than at the date of separation. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is an important consideration and can have significant implications on how a couple decide to sort out their financial arrangements and even when they decide to separate. Married couples who live together enjoy the ability to transfer assets between themselves free of CGT under inter-spouse tax rules. For disposals on or after 6 April 2023, the separating spouses or civil partners are given up to three years, after the year of separation, to make no gain/no loss transfer of assets. They also have unlimited time to transfer assets, when they are subject to a formal divorce agreement. A spouse or civil partner, who retains an interest in the former matrimonial home, has the option to claim Private Residence Relief when it is eventually sold. 60 | BN5 Magazine

For Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes, transfers between spouses are exempt transfers right up until the final dissolution of the marriage or civil partnership. Transfers made on divorce, or for the maintenance of the family, are exempt from IHT too. In summary, when considering the financial order and split of assets, it is important to consider the tax position of the couple in detail, as tax can still reduce the total value of the assets to be divided between the parties. In most cases, it will be necessary to understand any latent capital gains within the assets, to ensure there is an equitable split of net value. My message is simple - anyone planning to separate or divorce should speak to a tax adviser as well as their lawyer. Working together might sound slightly strange when a marriage is ending, but needs must! With lenders demanding higher percentage deposits and costly mortgages available to fewer, any capital or Income Tax savings that can be made are going to be very welcome.
