December 22 #197

Our events calendar is jam-packed with Christmas fun, lots of musical events plus our favourites – the High Street Christmas Shopping and the Christmas Tree Festival. If you’d like to find out everything happening in the village there are even more events listed on our website, henfieldbn5. co.uk. You can sort by different tabs – choosing ‘Christmas’ will show them all!
Feature events are at the top of the page and appear in rotation, and an entire date-ordered event listing is halfway down the page. Have an explore and find out some new things to do.
You will have seen the interactive High Street Trail organised by Henfield Community Partnership and Horsham District Council during October – this spooktastic trail was a huge success with over 300 players, actually Henfield was the most visited trail in the whole of Horsham District. They’re so thrilled with the results that we now have another free trail for Christmas – the ‘Hunt for the Lost Toys’ – which is a Pokémon GO style augmented reality trail where the characters appear in the street right next to you. A couple of the cheeky characters have even popped onto our Christmas cover! Take a look at page 30, all you need to do is grab your smartphone and enjoy the fun, it’s very simple!
We hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, thank you for reading BN5 in 2022.

Hilary Green & Penny Ann McKeon Woodmancote Parish Council News Woodmancote Parish Council have just launched their first social media platform on Facebook which is open to all residents of Woodmancote Parish. Its objective is to be a friendly and positive forum and to provide parishioners with an informal resource to learn about and participate in the activities of the Parish Council; share useful information with the community and make
connections with each other and enhance parish life. Members can post items that are of interest to the Parish. Councillors will review all posts before publication and they will only be allowed if they are relevant to the Parish or locality and likely to be of interest to Parishioners.
The group page is named ‘Woodmancote Parish (Blackstone, West Sussex)’ – there are other Woodmancote Parish Councils hence the reference to Blackstone. It would be great to see lots of new followers on the page, so please do visit and request to join and help to spread the word to neighbours and friends in the Parish. We currently have a vacancy for a Councillor so if you are interested please do get in contact with the Parish Clerk for an informal chat or come along to one of our meetings to see what the Council does and how it works. Our next meeting dates are 13 December 2022 and 10 January 2023, held at the pavilion, Blackstone Playing Fields, Blackstone Lane, Woodmancote at 7.30pm. Members of the public are always welcome to attend and have the opportunity to speak at the start of the meeting.

Henfield History for Christmas
Over a century and a half of Henfield history is coming your way in time for Christmas: ‘Henfield High Street – a History, from the 1800s to the Present Day’. Tobitts, Mussons, Baker’s the butchers and Baigents the builders are just a few of the best known names from the High Street to be found within.
After many months of hard work this book, produced by the Friends of Henfield Museum, was launched at the Christmas Fayre in The Henfield Hall in November. The inspiration for producing the book came from three articles on the history of the High Street going back into the 1800s, written by John Challen for the Parish Magazine in 1921. John Challen was born in Henfield in 1848 and died in 1922. Henfield Museum Curator Alan Barwick has expanded on what John Challen had written and brought the history of the High Street right-up to the present day.
The A5 book of over 18,000 words has 104 pages, and is illustrated with 107 photographs, a mixture of colour and black and white. This is a must have book for anyone interested in the history of Henfield. Priced at £10, if you also

Henfield Museum News
With the receding skirl of the Queen’s funerary piper likely to stick long in the memory for many, we highlight two museum documents which heralded the beginning and end of her reign. The first is a photo of a traditional ‘anvil firing’ by village blacksmiths Albert Brazier and Tom Miles marking the coronation in 1953. Originally a method of testing the quality of anvils, it subsequently became a means to mark an occasion. Second is a copy of the Platinum Jubilee scroll recently kindly donated by Horsham District Council. The original was presented to HRH the Queen by the District Council Chairman Dr. David Skipp earlier this year and can currently be found on display in the museum.

Dame Elizabeth Gresham Trust donations to local charities
In October we collected a cheque for £250 on behalf of Horsham Matters for the Henfield Foodbank (part of Horsham District Foodbank) from the Trustees of the Dame Elizabeth Gresham Trust. The Trust has been helping Henfield since 1661, originally giving ‘lengths of flannel’ to clothe the needy of Henfield; nowadays it’s a cash donation!
The Trust owns two fields in Henfield and proceeds from rental is distributed each year, at a service on All Hallow’s Day at the Parham Chapel in St Peters Church. A donation was also made to Henfield Youth Club. This one lady’s legacy to help those in need has continued for 361 years due to the continued commitment of the Trustees and it’s thought to be one of the oldest independent trusts in existence. For a more detailed article about the history of the Trust, see www.henfieldmuseum.org/ dameelizabethgreshamcharity.html Emma Cole
Music at St Peter’s Henfieldan update
Hello! I became the new Choir Director of St Peter’s Henfield back in January - at the time without a choir to direct! It’s taken a little while to get going but we now have an adult choir which rehearses on a Friday at 6pm for about an hour and a half. It will make its Sunday morning debut singing an anthem for Advent on 27th November. Now we have done the last evensong for this year, choir rehearsals will be concentrating on

two Christmas Carol services which will take place on December 18th at 11am at St Peter’s Woodmancote, and at 5pm at St Peter’s Henfield. If you would like to join the choir, please come along on a Friday at 6pm, or contact me on 07973 315413 for more details. All are welcome to attend the carol services.
Can you help? I’ve been sorting out the Music Library at Henfield Church and we are short of some of the choral pieces we would like to be able to perform. Have you got any sheet music or scores at home that you keep meaning to get rid of? I’m looking for copies of Stainer’s Crucifixion, Handel’s Messiah, Faure’s Requiem and Mozart’s Requiem. They don’t have to be in A1 condition, but they must be complete, with all the inner pages, covers less important. If you can help, please either drop the music off at the church in the tray provided, or phone the above number to arrange collection. If you have any other sheet music, do get in touch and let me know what you’ve got.

BN5 Birds
We mostly hear about birds that migrate here in the summer but it is a lot colder in Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Iceland and Russia at this time of year and many birds migrate here in the winter. The birds that winter here will have bred up north and then moulted and grown new feathers so we are lucky to see them in what will be their breeding plumage. We are seeing types of thrush called Redwings and Fieldfares in the fields, and they will probably come into our gardens if it is a harsh winter.
Many species of water birds also fly down to southern Britain for the winter. They have wonderful names. Ducks such as Pintail (pictured), Wigeon, Shelduck, Shoveler and Teal can be seen in the floods around Henfield along with the more sedentary Mallards. Further afield in and around Sussex other ducks which live on lakes or the sea will also arrive called Sawbills, Smew, Goosander (no, it’s not a goose) and Red-Breasted Merganser. Then there are the coastal birds called Loons (!); Red-Throated
Loon, Black-Throated Loon, Great Northern Loon. Not forgetting the sea ducks called Scoters(!); Common Scoter and the rarer Velvet Scoter and last but not least the Grebes; Slavonian Grebe and Black-necked Grebe which may join the local Great Crested and Little Grebes. There’s one duck called a Garganey that bucks this trend; it flies north to southern Britain in the spring to breed and then and migrates south from Britain to winter in Africa!

Wintry Scenes from Edwardian Henfield
The Friends of Henfield Museum have produced a new set of Christmas greeting cards from photos taken during the cold winters of the Edwardian era. We see a series of four images taken on Barrow Hill and at Golden Square (spot the snowballs!) as well as two of ice skating on the floods near Rye Farm. Some were sold as postcards at the time. Each has been put through a process of manual digital restoration, followed by suggestive algorithmic and manual colourisation - the cold of the ice and snow really jumps out! A long time coming, these cards will be on sale within the museum or on the museum website from the end of November. The cards are blank inside for your greeting. All funds go to the Friends of Henfield Museum.

Responding locally to the Cost of Living Crisis
On 2 November nearly 50 people attended a meeting to brainstorm ideas to help everyone (young and old, families individuals and businesses) in Henfield cope with the expected rise in costs of food, energy, and housing and more. It was amazing to see and hear from so many, including local organisations like Corpus Christi Catholic Church, The BP Guild, Henfield Parish Council, Henfield Community Partnership, Citizens Advice, Red Oaks and more. Some individuals came because they want to volunteer their time, expertise or the facilities of their business, and some creative suggestions were made.
We learned about the services and facilities that Henfield already has to assist anyone concerned about the cost of living, including the Food Bank. People identified some potential projects which might help. There was particular interest ‘Warm Rooms’ for people to visit in the daytime, a ‘Community Fridge’ to avoid food waste and share food, and a Help line for signposting the many support services. A big message was
that we need to tell everyone about what there is already in Henfield and how we can all help, including supporting with donations or volunteer time.
Many positive suggestions were made during the meeting with encouraging offers of help, time, expertise and finance from individuals, local businesses and interest groups - A huge thank-you to all who took part. Details for how to volunteer or offer other help with local Cost of Living projects will follow soon – watch this space!

legal issues to complete, in order that the Clarkes Mead Trustees can sign the contract, and our Building Regs application has yet to be approved. Our funding shortfall is smaller than last month, but we still need a further £60,000 to complete the shell building. Henfield’s On The Ball
We recently received a request from St Peters Primary School in Henfield for assistance with the funding of new football strip for their school team. We donated a sum of £495 to cover the costs of new team shirts with the BP Guild logo proudly emblazoned on the front. A couple of our members John Rodriguez and Rob Milsom recently met with some of the senior staff and children who showed them the new strip and proudly informed us they had won their first match in the new strip. Let’s hope their luck holds for future matches.

Henfield Trefoil Guild
Members of Henfield Trefoil Guild have enjoyed a variety of activities since the summer. We had an enjoyable fun evening playing the 18-hole Adventure Golf course at Rustington. We had our annual campfire sausage sizzle, attended the fabulous ‘Crazy for you’ show at Chichester Festival Theatre and visited Highdown Gardens at Worthing on a beautiful summer evening. In October we had a very interesting talk on bats from the Sussex Wildlife Trust. We’ve met up for long chats over coffee at Henfield Tea Gardens and plan a brunch at Emmaus, the second-hand superstore in Portslade, a charity that gives back. We are now preparing for the Henfield late night shopping evening. Please do come along and visit our stall. We have changed our monthly meetings to Saturday mornings for the winter months. We would love to meet new members so please come along and join us on Saturday
Horton Golf Club Charity Fundraising
Each year, Horton Golf Club works hard to support the community and local charities. This year our Charity Day in July raised over £1,650 for the Kent and Sussex Air Ambulance Service. This charity was the choice of Club Captain, Kevin Townsend, who is pictured presenting the cheque.
They also raised enough to donate £414 to the Henfield Haven, the cheque was presented by Brian Cullen to Chairman of Henfield Haven CIO Digby Stephenson. Digby expressed thanks to all the Club members for the kind donation and explained how support from local organisations ensures the success of the Haven in its aim to support local people living with dementia and their carers.
The club also supports Macmillan Cancer Research each year by holding a golf and coffee morning. This year it raised £500.
There has also been support for HART, with £118 raised by asking members to contribute £1 every time their ball lands in one of our ponds! If you would like to know more about Horton Golf Club or are considering taking up the sport, please contact Mark Wasserberg at secretary.hgc@outlook.com .

Aid to Ukraine
A big thank you to all the people who donated to the current Ukraine appeal and also those who helped in any way, especially all the steady support and help in preparing the boxes and also to the wonderful BP Guild drivers for their support in organising the transport of the boxes to the Hope and Aid Direct warehouse in Essex where trucks depart loaded for the Ukraine border.
On 2 November we sent 42 banana boxes, one large box and two builders bags which contained sleeping bags, camping gaz stoves, blankets, dry and tinned food, baby food, hygiene items and nappies. We also received cash donations which we turned into gaz stoves and a large quantity of food which we purchased in Cornerweighs (and received a very generous discount). I was delighted to see a collection box in Ropetackle in Shoreham and we even received aid from a table tennis and tennis club in Lancing and Steyning.

Messy Play Group update
A big thank you to super ‘Shed’ men Pete, John, Dave and Bob for putting together the cupboards for the Messy Play group at Henfield Leisure Centre. Sue Willis
Isolated Henfield
On Sundays and Bank Holidays Henfield is isolated due to the lack of public transport in or out of the village. On speaking to staff at our Leisure Centre for instance it transpired that they have no means of transport to or from work on a Sunday. The young staff are dependent on a bike/ walk in all weathers on very busy roads in and out of Henfield. The roads are increasingly busy due to lack of public transport. Buses during the week suffer from staff shortages which leads to cancellations, which sometimes means it can be two hours between buses. On normal bus days many of the drivers of the buses have to travel to the Henfield bus depot by car from as far as Worthing. In the current economy this means it is even more difficult to attract new drivers. To highlight the serious problem of lack of public transport Henfield Great Green week provided a free Sunday service to highlight what
could be possible if we had Sunday services. Despite the heavy rain people aged from 4 to 70 came out to join our bus trip.

Thank you
Eric Williams and all his family would like to thank the village for all the love and ongoing support shown to all of us, especially Eric, following his accident. Memorial Christmas Tree
As from Thursday 1st December we will be displaying our memorial Christmas tree in our office for families who have lost someone dear to them. We will be providing some Christmas tree tags for you to write a private message to your loved one, which you can pop in to us at our office and place the tags on our tree. These messages will be on the memorial Christmas tree
throughout December.
We have had such lovely feedback over the years from families to say it gives them great comfort to be able to remember their loved ones they have lost with their personal messages and are able to place them on our memorial tree. If anyone is unable to visit and select a tag, Henfield Funeral Services will be very happy to post one out to you, and place the tag on, on your behalf.

Henfield Common conservation work on reed bed
Contractors have now largely removed the willows and cut back around one third of the reeds clearing the eastern area nearest Henfield Cricket Pavilion.
Dale, the hard-working contractor who did the digger work, has been happy to communicate with me at the end and start of the day to check what is needed. The work is now completed, the main task being to pull all the willow spoil into a big mound so that it can be easily removed. He has also removed willows near the horse trail and roughed up the undergrowth to reduce the bramble domination to promote more diversity in this area.
As an experienced digger driver Dale was able to cope with the very wet weather we have been experiencing, getting stuck once he managed to find some logs in the woods to jam under the tracks and get out! Thanks to him and the Henfield Parish Council works team and volunteers for the continued work on this site to restore biodiversity and the wildlife in this reed bed.

When we heard that the Royal British Legion were short of poppy collectors in Henfield we were pleased to step in, Henfield Youth Club members and volunteers took to the streets for door to door collecting in the week before Remembrance Sunday.
Our members also created a poppy display and a wreath which was laid at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday.
Thank you to everyone who kindly donated and bought poppies. It was a very wet evening and the team returned soaked, but happy to have helped for such a good cause.

GETTING ACCESS TO YOUR MEDICATION
There have been a number of staffing issues recently at Lloyds Pharmacy in Henfield which have led to frustration in obtaining medications and increasingly long queues. These issues have been escalated to Lloyds Executive Management and NHS Sussex by Henfield Medical Centre and Henfield Parish Council.
We are asking for action to be taken because current service levels are unacceptable, although the staff who are working at our Lloyds Branch are doing their very best working under severe pressure and we would ask everyone to be respectful to them please. If you wish to voice your concerns, please email Lloyds Head Office at customer-services@lloydspharmacy.co.uk or call 03456 003565.
In the meantime, here are some alternative options to help you obtain your medication, take pressure off Lloyds staff and reduce queue times.
1. For regular, or “repeat” medications which you normally request without seeing your doctor, you could explore the services of an online pharmacy. These organisations will dispense your medications from a large, centralised warehouse pharmacy and will post them to you without any additional charge. Use of these online pharmacies does actually save the NHS some money. There are several such pharmacies available – for example, PHARMACY2U, LLOYDS DIRECT, MEDEXPRESS or BOOTS. You will need to register with your chosen online pharmacy by giving your name, address, date of birth, NHS number (you can find this on any information from your doctor or on a repeat prescription form) and contact details. The pharmacy will confirm your medications with your GP and will order prescriptions directly from the GP when you tell them that you need more medication. Usually, the online pharmacies will remind you when you need to order more medications. You will need to order repeats about a week before you need them to allow time for dispensing and delivery. Please note that the use of an online pharmacy is not recommended for urgent or acute illness medication because of the 5-day delivery timeline.
2. For a new illness or condition where medication is advised to be taken urgently (less than 5 days) then you can ask your doctor or prescriber to send your prescription electronically or via text to a
pharmacy of your choice. For those who work outside of Henfield or who can travel, you may select a pharmacy outside of the village, but you should make the choice when the doctor issues the prescription and be sure to tell them where you would like to collect it.
If you are already using an online pharmacy for your regular and repeat prescriptions, your doctor will effectively override that standing arrangement where urgent medication is needed to avoid the 5-day delivery issue.
The Medical Centre has agreed to follow the protocols outlined above.
3. If you wish to use the local Lloyds Pharmacy on Henfield High Street for repeat medications, then please allow at least seven working days between requesting your medications and visiting Lloyds to collect them. Although the system of batch prescriptions should mean that your medications are automatically ordered, workload pressures make the experience inconsistent at the moment. You would be advised to visit the pharmacy at least a week in advance of requiring your medications to confirm that they have received the prescription from your doctor. In the event of any problems this should allow sufficient time for the prescription to be requested again, before your medication runs out. At present, Lloyds Henfield are extremely short staffed and waiting times are long, so please wear warm clothing and be prepared for queuing outside. Please be polite as the staff are doing their best under very difficult circumstances.
4. If you live more than 1.6km (as the crow flies) from Henfield Lloyds or any pharmacy, then you are allowed to collect your medications from the dispensary within the Medical Centre. Your medical record will need to be updated to allow this - so do have a word with the reception team if you wish them to dispense for you in the future. To find other pharmacies and their contact information go to: https://www.nhs.uk/ service-search/pharmacy/find-a-pharmacy
If you need help setting up an account with an online pharmacy, then we suggest a visit to Henfield Computer Club who have offered to help. They meet in the Henfield Hall Garden Room every Wednesday between 10am & 12pm.

The most wonderful time of the year
It really wouldn’t be Christmas in Henfield without the wonderful Christmas Tree Festival brought to us by the Henfield Evangelical Free Church!
This year the festive fun takes place on Friday 9 December (5-9pm) and Saturday 10 December (10am-12pm and 5-7pm) where you’ll be able to admire the creative and festive talents of lots of local businesses, clubs, charities, families and individuals who want to show off their tree decorating skills. As well as the trees which will be displayed throughout the church, there will also be an appearance from Spooky the Donkey, Carol Singers and the Hand Bell Ringers. Refreshments will also be available.
The public will vote on the trees in each category on Friday night under the following categories: Most Creative Tree; The Tree I would most like in my Home; and Best in Show and the results will be displayed on the Saturday. The trees will also stay up for the church‘s Christmas Tree Service which takes place on Sunday 11 December at 10.30am.
This festival is a free community event, but the Henfield Evangelical Free Church will be collecting money to support Tear Fund’s Pakistan Flood Relief charity.

HENFIELD CHRISTMAS EVENING ADDS SOME SPARKLE
We’re looking forward to the return of the fabulously festive Henfield Christmas Evening on Friday 2 December from 4-8pm. Shops and businesses will be opening late with lots of Christmas treats and there will be additional stalls and food vendors up and down the High Street – here’s just a taster of some of the festive fun you will find!
There will be children’s fairground rides and a fire pit at the top of the High Street. Santa’s grotto will be in the Bus Shelter and his sleigh parked outside Henfield Club courtesy of the BP Guild and Henfield Youth Club, alongside a burger and sausage grill provided by the BP Guild. Jugglers, musicians and dancers will all add to the fun. Santa’s reindeer (real ones!) will be in Stokes’ garden - these beautiful creatures are enthralling for children and adults alike.
There’s a Fancy Dress Competition being sponsored by Stokes, with an incredible £100 Tesco shopping voucher prize for the winner! Children of any age can dress up as a character from the Charles Dickens book ‘Oliver’ so we look forward to seeing everyone dressed up in Dickensian costumes! Just pop along to Hamfelds before 7pm on the evening to have your photograph taken for judging. The winner will be announced that evening and on social media. The Henfield Club will be helping you get into the Christmas mood with mulled wine and hot dogs available to buy and they’ll also have a tombolacome along and see if you can be a lucky winner! Alternatively, just pop into their friendly bar for a drink. You’ll find a group of Carol Singers outside Stevens from 6.30pm, if you’d like to join them please do, the more the merrier (more details can be found in the BN5 News).
FRIDAY 2 DECEMBER FROM 4-8PM
There will be competition for the best-dressed High Street Christmas window, with a voucher prize to be spent in Henfield Tea Gardens for the winning shop, we don’t envy the judges because Henfield shops always look beautiful decked out for the festivities.
The Post House Café will be full of festive sparkle, their lovely staff look forward to seeing you and will be offering a little ‘Christmas Spirit’ something for the Mums and Dads (don’t worry, you can still bring the kids too), with homemade mulled cider, local beer, cocktails, great wine or even with one of their famous House Espresso Martinis. There are only so many mince pies you can eat before you need some savoury sustenance, and a warming cheese and ham toastie should do the trick!
Henfield Library will be opening late for the Christmas evening with some fun activities for the children including hunt the snowmen, decorate a snowflake and Christmas colouring. Goodness Henfield will also have children’s crafts on offer in addition to serving their legendary mulled cider, which was a huge hit at Halloween.
For more sophisticated arts and crafts the artistrun Gallery BN5 will be staying open late as will Atty and Smart, so that people can pop in and look around and catch up on their Christmas shopping! There will be other shops open but this is all we know at the time of going to print – please keep an eye on local social media and henfieldbn5.co.uk for more updates.
If you would like to get involved with your business, club group or charity, please contact Fiona at Stokes of Henfield on 01273 492032.
We look forward to seeing you at this great village event.

Hans Christian Andersen
Here we have all the classic fairy tales from one of the most adored storytellers of all time – and all in one show! Growing up many of us enjoyed fairy stories about characters like Thumbelina, Inchworm, and The Little Mermaid. These, and over 150 others, were written in the 19th century by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen and have sparked countless young imaginations since then. And many of us have seen the wonderful film named after the author and starring the great Danny Kaye as Hans.
This show is a timeless treasure and will be brought to life in Henfield Theatre Company’s magical, musical production, full of well-known fairy stories told in song and dance, which will appeal to parents, children and grandparents alike.
The story tells of Hans, a humble cobbler in Odense, Denmark, who spends much of his time in his shop telling stories to the children gathered around him. The local Magistrate and the Schoolmaster are upset that Hans is keeping the children from school, and banish him from the town. Hans travels with his apprentice, Peter, from his home town to seek his fortune in the capital city, ‘Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen’, where he is joined in song by the welcoming crowd.
Hans becomes renowned as a cobbler but has even more success as a storyteller. Wherever
Hans goes he is followed by children, and his story of The Ugly Duckling inspires a small boy, teased because of his appearance, to gain in confidence. The boy’s father, the editor of the local newspaper, asks Hans to write down the story for publication and Hans agrees. The ballet of The Little Mermaid tells of the teenage mermaid who dreams of becoming human when she falls in love with a Prince and the ballet, narrated by Hans, becomes a huge success.
Hans, now a successful author, returns to Odense where he enchants the children with more stories and, surrounded by friends and townspeople, the show ends with the rousing retelling of The King’s New Clothes.
Rehearsals are in full swing for this magical family show, to be presented at The Henfield Hall on 12th, 13th and 14th January 2023 at 7.30pm, with a matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday 14th. Directed by Susanna Seaford, with Musical Director Jane Haines, it will have a live orchestra.
Kindly sponsored by Andy Blunden Wall and Floor Tiling Ltd, tickets for this unmissable show will be available from 12th December online at www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com or at Steven’s Estate Agents at £13 (adults) and £10 (children under 16). Previous Christmas shows presented by Henfield Theatre Company, such as The Sound of Music and last year’s Treasure Island, have been hugely successful, so early booking is recommended.

Bake on, bake off...
As one of the many diversions from the drudgery of Covid related restrictions last year, our head nurse, Dani, organized the Hawthorn Vets bakeoff. After a rush of blood to the head, I agreed to take part despite having the baking experience of a potato (and not even a baked one at that!). There were several categories and somehow I got put in the cake contest up against non other than Chris “The Victoria Sponge Queen” Creasey. This was a David vs Goliath scenario so I decided to put in some practice with an entry level Lemon Drizzle to flex my baking muscles. The first effort was something more akin to a frisbee and was consigned to the dog bowl. The dogs clearly thought that they were the recipients of all my future baking efforts as something canine ate half of my second effort despite it being on a worktop. However, a taste test by the kids on the remainder deemed it fit for human consumption and so I elected to proceed to the main event.
As this was a serious baking competition, I decided to try and make a cake version of Hawthorn Vets in Henfield. I was also armed with my secret weapon in the form of Mother Underwood’s chocolate cake recipe. In my head, I imagined a quaint “Dickens-esq” version of our building with dustings of snow, chocolate button tiles overlaid on the roof and the glowing of light through some caramel windows edged with thin chocolate. However, what materialized looked more like something that emerges from the first lesson of a home economics class – which wasn’t really surprising considering my baking pedigree. Luckily, the “judges” regarded that it was edible and
despite losing to Chris’s excellent sponge my cake wasn’t used to grace any dog bowls!
This was obviously fortuitous as we all know that chocolate can be toxic to dogs if they eat enough of it – which given the time of year brings me nicely on the toxins that you should look out for and make sure to avoid over the festive period.
• Chocolate is the obvious one – it is theobromine which is contained within cocoa which is toxic to dogs causing liver damage – hence dark chocolate is more harmful than milk.
• Christmas Pudding and mince pies contain raisins which even in small quantities can be toxic to dogs causing kidney failure.
• Macadamia nuts can cause lethargy, increased body temperature, tremor, lameness and stiffness in dogs.
• Onion, chives, garlic and leeks are dangerous to dogs and cats, as they damage red blood cells, leading to anaemia.
• Tinsel isn’t edible but it can certainly cause problems if it is ingested! Cats are the main culprits here and tinsel can get stuck in the bowel causing severe illness.
The advice if you suspect your pet may have eaten anything toxic is to call us and we will advise you how to proceed – it will often involve making your pet sick. However, prevention is better than cure, so best to avoid dietary indiscretion in the first place! At the time of writing, Hawthorn bakeoff II is just starting – I’m in cake week again at the end of the month, could it be rigged, I wonder?!? Wish me luck!

LEST WE FORGET
Once again Henfield residents turned out their numbers on Sunday 13 November to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the two World Wars as well as recent conflicts.
Led by Brighton City Brass, the Parade mustered at the War Memorial in Cagefoot Lane and marched to St Peter’s Church for a Service of Remembrance.
After the Church service the Parade returned to the War Memorial where they were joined by residents who lined the High Street. The short service of remembrance here included a two-minute silence, the Last Post and Reveille being sounded, as well as poppy wreaths being laid on behalf of various local organisations
Thank you to Henfield Parish Council and St Peter’s Church for the organisation of this touching village Remembrance event.

Business Structures
Once you have taken the decision to start a business, there are various legal structures you can choose. The most appropriate structure will depend on a combination of your commercial objectives; the degree of permanency required; as well as legal, accounting and tax considerations. Generally businesses have preferred the following structures:
Business Structure Advantages Disadvantages
Partnership - You and your partners are individually self-employed for tax purposes, with profits allocated in profit sharing ratios.
Limited companies - are incorporated under Companies Act 2006.To form a limited company you need at least one shareholder and at least one director. It is a requirement for companies to maintain a register with Companies House, including filing a Confirmation Statement with directors’ and shareholders’ details. Moore Kingston Smith can organise incorporation and maintain all the registers that a business needs.
• Draw on talents of others
• Relatively unrestrictive
• National Insurance the same as a sole trader
• Not normally personally liable for company’s debts
• Enhanced business image
• Companies can claim Research & Development tax credits and a wide range of tax reliefs
• Normally set up in a matter of hours
• For VAT purposes, a limited company is not aggregated with other businesses, as are different businesses carried on by individuals
• Corporation Tax rates start at 19%
• Dividends can be paid to shareholders, potentially at a reduced tax rate.
• Share the profits and set up costs
• Jointly and severally liable for business debts
• Not in sole control.
• More formal and restrictive
• Not normally allowed to borrow money from the company
• Accounts must be prepared in a statutory format and filed on public record with Companies House; they may have to be audited if you exceed the statutory audit thresholds.
• Potentially a double tax hit on profits made/extracted –Corporation Tax on profits and then either dividend tax charge or Capital Gains Tax on share sale.
Limited liability partnership - In broad terms, this is a cross between a partnership and a limited company. You can organise your business and pay tax in exactly the same way as if you were an ordinary partnership.
Similar to partnership, but:
• Personal liability is limited unless responsible for partnership’s bankruptcy
• Greater flexibility on introducing or repaying capital
• The agreement between the members on sharing profit and managing the business etc. is a private document
Similar to partnership, but:
• Have to notify Companies House of the business address and the names of the partners
• Accounts must be on public record every year and they need to be audited if the statutory audit thresholds are exceeded
• All profits are taxed on the partners at rates of up to 45% plus National Insurance, so not as effective as a company if profits are retained in the LLP.
68 | BN5 Magazine sales@bn5magazine.co.uk
The private limited company is the most common type of corporate entity. The liability of its members is limited to the issued Share Capital, which could be as low as £1. The company requires a registered office in the UK and at least one director for whom there is no residency requirement. Also, there is no longer a mandatory requirement for companies to appoint a company secretary.
Every UK registered company is required to file accounts at Companies House, and these become available for inspection by the public. A private limited company has to file accounts within nine months of its period end or become liable to automatic penalties. The accounts also need to be audited if certain large thresholds of turnover, gross assets and number of employees are exceeded.
