Editor’s Letter
We’re wondering what’s happened to the summer weather this year (usually when I type a statement like this it means we’ll have a heatwave by the time BN5 lands on your doormat, watch this space...), as were organisers of the Summer Fair, who found themselves stoically battling gale-force winds to put marquees up on the King’s Field. Thanks to everyone who came out to support the event, our photos are on page 36. While this was happening, Henfield Scouts were busy on their awesome Summer Camp, you’ll find a report on what happened on page 22, alongside one about their Big Help Out event. It’s great to see children enjoying getting involved, especially when they’re helping out at the Community Orchard working with experts at Sustainable Henfield 2030 and Henfield Conservation Volunteers. Their work and enthusiasm makes a huge difference, and inspires them to take care of our beautiful environment.
As we’re now in full school holidays mode, please do take a look at our website for some great things to do with the family; some do have a cost but some are completely free. Enjoy the holidays!

Twineham Summer Fair Success
The Friends of Twineham School organised another successful School Summer Fair on Sunday 9 June. Pupils, staff, parents and locals celebrated together on a lovely sunny day and much fun was had at this fabulous community event. This year the Fair featured a well-stocked BBQ, bar, bouncy castles, dog show, tug-of-war games, colour a castle craft activity, facepainting, circus skills and demonstration, an auction, and the infamous ‘win a wheelbarrow of booze’. The school children also took part in a demonstration of their musical skills and had the opportunity to become ‘young entrepreneurs’. With a start-up

donation of £5 to fund and develop their ideas, the children took the opportunity to raise money for the school at the Fair and ran their own stalls. Many great ideas were on offer – from delicious home-made cakes, milkshakes, freshly made lemonade, and artwork, to activities and games to win prizes - the children had the opportunity to learn how to make, market, and sell their ideas. All money raised goes towards supporting Twineham School’s Outdoor Learning Programme where forest school skills are taught to every pupil in our wonderful outdoor spaces. A huge thank you to all that attended and supported this event, and especially to our sponsors and auction donators. It was a fantastic day, and we hope you all enjoyed it!

South Downs Hockey Club Junior Hockey Camp
We are really pleased to be running our two-day junior hockey camp on 14th and 15th August 2024. It is open to boys and girls aged 10 -16 and will be appropriate for players of all levels from those just starting out in the game to those more experienced looking to improve and challenge themselves. We will promote learning through enjoyment and aim to make sure the two days are fun-packed, including activities to improve core and advanced skills as well as building the participants’ knowledge of team play, game management and performance. The camp will run from 10am-3pm. Players will be expected to provide their own lunch and enough liquid to keep them hydrated throughout the day. The cost is £35 per day or £65 for the two days. Both days will be run by our Sussex County coach Mark level 2, and Nathan level 1, as well as support from other club senior players. If you have any questions concerning the camp and if it will be appropriate for your son or daughter to attend, please do not hesitate to contact us at southdownshc@gmail.com . Intergenerational Music
Henfield Community Partnership have enlisted the services of Nordoff & Robbins, the largest music therapy charity in the UK, for a 6-month pilot and a music therapist is coming to Henfield once a week on a Tuesday to run an intergenerational group, a group singalong for all, and one-to-one therapy sessions.
We would like to encourage more people to come along to the afternoon singalong and would love to also include those who would benefit, such as anyone who might be lonely, isolated or vulnerable. The aim is to eventually create a dementia friendly choir, one that excludes no-one. Kylie, the music therapist who runs the sessions, is enthusiastic and experienced. The afternoon
sessions is for adults with Kylie on keyboard and the lyrics on the big screen, recent examples were tunes from the war and show tunes. It’s free with tea, coffee and cake afterwards. We would love as many people as possible from the community to join in, so we can carry on even after the 6-month pilot is over.
At our session on Tuesday 18th June, we had a visit from Dave Rowntree, the drummer from Blur. Blur were receiving a Silver Clef award this year. Linda Ryan, Red Oaks manager, said: “The event was a great success and will have lots of positivity for the village. Nordoff and Robbins were extremely happy at the interactions between the community and residents and did see it has a truly community session.”
Please come along, the Intergenerational Music sessions involving children are from 11am-12pm on a Tuesday morning and the Community Singalong for adults is on a Tuesday afternoon from 3-4pm, both at Red Oaks. All free and all welcome to attend.

Henfield Youth Club SEN evenings
Quite often, our regular sessions can be noisy and overwhelming, especially for those young people who may struggle with loud noise and unpredictability and so this is where our SEN evenings come in! Once a month we offer a calmer, quieter environment for the young people to enjoy all that Youth Club has to offer. The sessions must be prebooked and are usually held on the first Wednesday evening of the month from 6.30pm –8pm. Numbers are limited to 10 young people, helping to maintain the calm environment we aim to provide. Its £5 for one young person plus their parent/carer with free tea, coffee and biscuits. We set up Youth Club like a regular session, allowing the young people the freedom to explore and enjoy the facilities at their own pace. We also enjoy playing games and activities with them, allowing their adult time to sit down and chat, knowing their young person is in a safe, caring environment – we absolutely love playing parachute games together!
If you think it would be beneficial for your young person. Numbers have been low to start off and we would love to see some more young people benefitting from our SEN evenings. Please email henfieldyc@gmail.com to book.

John White
As a family we are heartbroken to announce the passing of John White, a beloved Father to Tim, Grandfather to Charmaine and Great-Grandfather to Charlie, Ella & Poppy. He passed away peacefully at home on Friday 5th July at the age of 90.
We will forever cherish the memories of him and his love for being outdoors on his tractor, his favourite place to be. A well-known market gardener, he was a third generation supplier of fresh vegetables to the local community.
He was a very much loved and respected personality in Henfield, and he will be missed by many. As a family, we will miss him dearly and appreciate your support during this time of grief. We take comfort in knowing he is now at peace with his dearly beloved wife Kathleen and son Andrew.

Community Heroes celebrated at Chairman’s tea party
As part of Horsham District Council’s 50th anniversary Chairman Cllr Nigel Emery hosted a special tea party for 50 local Community Heroes at Warnham Nature Reserve on 20 June. The sun shone brightly on the award winners who do such amazing work across the Horsham District.
The awards acknowledge and celebrate the people who make the Horsham District so special, including Ruth Robotham from Henfield, who was nominated as a Community Hero for her many contributions to village life, but most especially for her work in Sustainable Henfield 2030, where she inspires and coordinates many initiatives. These include ongoing Recycling projects, including arranging sale of unwanted goods to raise money for local good causes, and enabling other groups to benefit or do the same. Ruth’s determination led to the setting up of the very successful monthly Henfield Repair Cafe where we now have a fantastic team of volunteers giving up their time and sharing expertise.
Ruth has successfully involved many other local people in these and other projects, but in her spare time she also volunteers her time driving the Henfield Electric Community Car Club and working with the Henfield Conservation Group. We are very proud that she has been recognised as a Community Hero as part of the Horsham District Council’s celebrations of 50 Years.
All our local charities are in desperate need of volunteers. If you have a few spare hours and think volunteering is for you, please get in touch with the Horsham District Council Voluntary Sector Support team at www.volunteerhorshamdistrict.co.uk.

Strawberry Proms for Residents
Residents and guests at Red Oaks care home in Henfield enjoyed an afternoon of smiles with a live music performance that took place at the home. Local Brass Fusion performed a selection of Proms classics. With picnic tables set and flags at the ready, families and friends from the
local community enjoyed Pimm’s alongside strawberries and cream. The finale saw everyone standing waving their flags to Sussex by Sea.
General Manager, Linda Ryan said; “Our residents and guests had a wonderful day listen to the fabulous music of Brass Fusion. We do our best to provide a wide range of activities and entertainment at Red Oaks as part of the lifestyle enrichment programme for residents, and this was one of our favourites!” One resident commented; “I always used to go to the Proms concerts; it was lovely to be able to attend this event in the garden and see so many people”.

Self Help Group enjoys a ‘Grand Day Out’ to Worthing
We left Henfield Hall just after 11am and arrived in Worthing about noon. We all went straight to The Arcades Fish Restaurant on the seafront which was booked for all 38 of us.
We had a lovely meal of Fish and Chips with Ice cream to follow and a nice glass of wine for some, others had juice or water. After lunch, we had plenty of time for shopping or going on the pier, which was sunny but breezy.
A Grand Day Out
The Self Help Group are on their way
They’re off to see the sea
I hope there’s many toilets
As most will need a pee
A 30-minute trip ahead
The traffic wasn’t bad
And soon the coach arrived on site
The passengers were glad
Lunchtime had now arrived
Fish & Chips all round
Sipping wine and munching food
Apart from that no sound
A visit to the local pier
It was very old
But on the end the wind was blowing
Unfortunately, quite cold
So off they went to the shops or to a local Cafe
Looking around for things to buy
It was a bit of a faff
2 hours after lunch they had
Could go paddling in the sea
Time to roll up trousers
And expose the knobbly knees
The time went quick, they had a ball
And it didn’t rain
Trying to find the outing coach
Was a bit of a game
So back they travelled in the coach
Another day was done
The helpers were amazing
And everyone had fun!
Philip Watson (son of Beryl Watson)
We left Worthing about 4.30pm and had a lovely scenic ride home to Henfield Hall, where those who came in the minibus were taken home. It was a lovely day, sunshine and clouds, windy but dry and everyone enjoyed themselves. A big ‘thank you’ to Maureen and all her helpers, it was fantastic!

Henfield’s Community Garage Sale and Give Your Stuff Away Day!
Over the last weekend in June, Henfield buzzed with excitement as many residents had a good sort-out and took part in the Community Garage Sale and Give Your Stuff Away Day. The event, sparked by a suggestion in the local Facebook group, came together quickly so wasn’t able to be featured in BN5!
With around 50 houses participating, the bargain hunters are out and about to see what bargains could be had! Residents offered a wide variety of items from furniture and kitchenware to
books, toys, and clothing. There was something for everyone, and the spirit of community and sustainability was palpable.
Given the success and enthusiasm for this inaugural event, there is second one planned for the last weekend in September, 28th & 29th. If you’re interested in participating or want to stay updated, keep an eye out for more details in next month’s magazine or join Facebook group ‘Henfield Garage Sale day & Give Your Stuff Away Day’.
Thank you to everyone who took part and made this event a memorable one. Let’s look forward to our next community gathering and continue to make Henfield a wonderful place to live!

Elizabeth’s Art, supported by Henfield Gardens and Arts
I first met artist Kenneth McIntosh when he was stewarding at Gallery BN5, just opposite where I live with my mother Iryna. We left Ukraine on 4th March 2022, when I was then 12 years old. Luckily we settled in Henfield and I go to Roedean school. When Kenneth and I chatted, l asked him where I may show my art as I’ve been painting since l was 6 years old. I was disappointed that I had to pay to show in the gallery.
Kenneth then suggested that although it was too late to feature in the Gardens & Arts Festival brochure, he could ask the Henfield Club to display my art in the Committee Room. Kenneth was sure of this as he had been in part of the committee of the Henfield Club and the Festival for some years. The rest of my family in Ukraine were very happy to know of this. I had to work on a second piece and have the artworks framed. Kenneth then rearranged the artworks showing in the committee room, said that very many people went up to see the exhibition and many had seen the article in a local magazine.
I am now starting in year 10, l am 14 years old. In year 11 l hope to pass my Art GCSE successfully, and my A-Level Art in year 12 as well. I love painting and hope to become an artist when I finish my education, but probably, as a hobby. I have always been a creative person in my life, and in addition to drawing, l love acting, and l dream of becoming an actress.
My mother and I thank all people who welcomed and helped us settle in Henfield and also all those who still help my people in Ukraine.

Help raise funds for Horsham Matters Foodbank
Looking for a challenge? Horsham Matters is seeking participants who fancy facing their fears to help tackle food poverty in its latest event, a sponsored Glass Walk.
The event, being held on Saturday September 7th at The Holbrook Club in Horsham, involves walking barefoot over four metres of smashed glass.
The charity that supports Horsham District residents who are struggling to afford food and pay for gas and electricity is holding the event to help raise funds to meet the high demand for its services. Last year the charity provided the highest number of food parcels in its 10-year history and food donations have fallen to critically low levels. Proceeds from the event will be used to provide local people with food, energy vouchers or essentials such as a mattress to sleep on.
The event is being run by renowned training and events company Time 4 Change who will give participants all the training they need to tackle the challenge.
To register for the event which starts at 12 noon, please go to www.register.enthuse.com/ps/ event/CharityGlassWalk or email fundraising@ horsham-matters.org.uk. Registration costs £25, to include a certificate of completion and participants are asked to raise £100 in sponsorship.

St Barnabas thanks Henfield’s ‘Cake Currency’!
The Friends of St Barnabas have once again proved that Henfield runs on ‘Cake Currency!’ But it is the massive support of our community that turns money- raising events into wonderful social occasions and boosts funds for our local Hospice.
In May The ‘Dowager Lady Crabtree’ delighted a Tea Party of 60+ guests to her reflections on ‘Growing Old Disgracefully’. But our guests were already in jovial party mood following the fizz and sumptuous afternoon tea provided by the Friends and their many supporters (with special thanks to the Ladybirds Team).
They were also overwhelmed by the truly delightful setting of delicate posies, embroidered napkins and fine china, not to mention the seemingly endless flow of elegant treats served by our waitresses.
It was unanimously declared to be a wonderful afternoon. We all look forward to the next occasion and to hopefully raising another £900 for our Hospice. We particularly thank ‘Lady Crabtree’ for her generous participation in the event.
And our fund-raising continued at the Garden and Arts festival where we served Tea at Old Mill House. Once again our bakers provided an astonishing array of cakes. And given the backdrop of the gorgeous setting, the occasion took on the atmosphere of a wonderful Garden Party. Many a new friendship was forged over the
Victoria sponge! Thanks to a private donation for that event, we doubled our money, raising £1,300! Grateful thanks to all our helpers, but it could not happen without the support of our exceptional community here. As I often remark… Henfield seems to turn ‘currants into currency’. And what fun we all have in making that magic happen!

Henfield Birdwatch Big Bird Bash
In May, Henfield Birdwatch arranged five walks within the Parish to see how many species are around at this time of year. In each of the five years of ‘Bashing’ we’ve accumulated over 60 different species.
This year it was 63, a little short of the 2022 record of 69. Fifteen species were found by all five groups, including migrants such as Reed
Warbler, Blackcap, Whitethroat and Chiffchaff, while Cuckoos were heard on four walks, as were resident species Skylark, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Buzzard and Greenfinch and rather surprisingly Goldcrest, whose very quiet “tiddly, tiddly” song is actually rather difficult to hear! Just one Bullfinch was heard, and only briefly, by Will’s group near Furners Lane on Sunday. Mike’s Monday evening walk notched up the only Treecreeper, and a single Turtle Dove was heard west of Woods Mill. In our 1999 Henfield Birdwatch survey there were probably 6 to 10 pairs in the parish but sadly we are now down to just one or maybe two pairs, despite conservation efforts by the RSPB and others to halt their dramatic 99% decline since the 1960s.
Those who joined Paul on the early Sunday walk north along the Downslink and river enjoyed the rich song of Nightingales along the track as well as superb views of Barn Owls hunting, while those who took the route south with Val on Monday were pleased to see Lapwings in a field north of Stretham and groups of chattering Linnets in scrub by the river. They also found the surprise of the day when in a wet patch in a field west of Buckwish Farm was a Redshank – not common here and more likely to be seen in winter months. Predictably the two walks to the south, taking in the mixed habitats of the brooks and millstream area were the most productive, with 46 species apiece. Just one Grey Wagtail was spotted, on a barn roof near Swains Farm, a single Coot (near the Redshank) and the cronking of a Raven was heard once, by Saturday leader Angela as she walked up from Small Dole to the meeting point! If you want to find out more about Henfield and its birds, take a look at our website: www.henfieldbirdwatch.co.uk or find us on Facebook.

St Peter’s School Colour Run
The children at St Peter’s School Henfield ran their first ever colour run on Friday 5th July organised by their PTA.
The rain didn’t dampen spirits as the children ran in their year groups around the obstacle course, twice having to go through four paint stations, over hay bales, through hoops and tyres too. Even the teachers were involved throwing the powder and doing their own lap.
It didn’t end there for the teachers either, as some volunteered to be ‘gunged’ for our gunge the teacher raffle, the unlucky duo were Miss Foster and Mrs Searles, who were amazing sports. We are still getting amazing feedback from the children, parents and teachers so we hope to make this an annual event. Well done to everyone involved!

Henfield Scouts Epic Camp
Over the weekend of June 14th-16th, 1st Henfield Scout Group held its biggest and most exciting camp in years, at our regular stomping grounds –Hillside Scout Campsite in Small Dole. This epic camp, that has been in the planning since October 2023, brought together over 100 enthusiastic young people from the group, along with a dedicated team of 30 volunteer parents, all

committed to ensuring a safe and action-packed adventure for young people.
While Mother Nature threw some curveballs with strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday morning, the spirit of the Scouts (and their trusty tents!) remained high and mess tents stayed anchored! Thanks to quick thinking and a flexible plan, all activities continued as planned – a true testament to the Scouts’ resilience!
This camp welcomed all sections of the group: Scouts (10-14 years), Cubs (8-10 years) and Beavers (6-8 years) who enjoyed overnight camping adventures filled with exciting daytime activities. Even our youngest Squirrels (4-5 years old) joined in the fun with a dedicated day packed with engaging activities.
From hikes and target practice with archery and shooting, to the timeless joy of campfire singalongs and mastering fire-lighting skills, the camp offered something for everyone.
1st Henfield Scout Group extends a massive thank you to everyone involved in making this camp a resounding success. It was a weekend of learning new skills, making new friendships, conquering fears and most importantly having fun!

Henfield Scouts Make a Big Impact with The Big Help Out
The 1st Henfield Scout Group joined forces with Sustainable Henfield 2030 for a fantastic day on 9th June, participating in the nationwide #TheBigHelpOut project.
Scouts of all ages, from the youngest Squirrels (ages 4-5) to the experienced Explorers (14-18), got their hands dirty alongside parents and adult volunteers. Together, they built a new bug house and hibernaculum for wildlife, installed fresh birdhouses, maintained the dead hedge (a habitat for wildlife) and conducted a thorough litter pick –all within the Henfield Community Orchard. This nationwide initiative aims to raise awareness of volunteering and provide opportunities for people to give back to their communities. Originally planned as a cornerstone of the King’s Coronation, The Big Help Out has now become an annual event coinciding with his official birthday.
A special thank you goes to Tony from Sustainable Henfield for volunteering his time and expertise to assist the Scouts on this impactful day.

Henfield Theatre Company presents the enchanting ‘GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM’
One of the most uplifting stories ever written, Michelle Magorian’s stunning ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ is brought gloriously to life in this stage adaptation by David Wood – the UK’s ‘National Children’s Dramatist’ (The Times).
Set during the dark and dangerous early days of the Second World War, ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ follows sad young William Beech (played by Finn Donegan), who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside with other children and builds a remarkable and moving friendship with the elderly recluse Tom Oakley (played by Ian Henham). After being bullied by the local children, Will becomes friends with them, and in particular another evacuee, Zach (played by Joseph SmithBarry). He joins them in the village drama group.
Villagers are surprised that the reclusive Oakley would want to take in an evacuee and particularly an emotionally vulnerable boy. Gradually Tom and Will build a positive relationship, and Tom helping him to read and write.
All seems perfect until Will is devastatingly summoned back to London by his mother. Becoming increasingly worried about Will not responding to his letters, Tom travels to London to see him. The story takes some alarming twists
and tragic turns during the Blitz, culminate in a daring kidnap”.
Director Rosemary Nice says “Nobody who has read the book or seen the film of the same name could fail to be moved by it and long for a happy ending as William’s story progresses. David Wood has turned it into a wonderful stage play, first performed at the Chichester Festival Theatre as part of the initiative to bringing the town onto the stage. We are privileged to bring it to Henfield. Whether we have most of Henfield onstage is debatable, or even possible, but we hope enough of you will remain as audience member to be rewarded with the enacting of this beautiful story.”
Mandy Ainsworth

Method: slice up the veggies, chop up the herbs and zest and juice your lime then simply combine in a big bowl and serve!
Village Spirit at Henfield Summer Fair
Most of us assumed the Henfield Summer Fair had fallen foul of the bad weather on the morning of 15th June, as gale-force winds and heavy rainfall were featuring heavily on all our weather Apps. But, like all good Scouts, the B-P Guild aren’t put off by a bit of rainfall! The marquees went up (quite literally, in one case, when the beer-tent made its own way several feet up in the air across the King’s Field, despite being anchored by several burly Guildsmen) and the tea tables came out, all ready to welcome villagers to celebrate the King’s Birthday.
The sun finally peeked out, but sadly some of the exhibitors hadn’t been able to set up their smaller gazebos due to high winds, and a couple of the arena events were cancelled. Some were able to set-up inside the main hall alongside the bouncy castle with the kind permission of Henfield
Leisure Centre and others sheltered at the side of the building to avoid the worst of the weather. Despite it all, the event was a real success, the Dog Show organised by Hawthorn Vets was inundated with fluffy four-legged entries, the beer-tent full to bursting and the Wild Violets tea and cake stall did a roaring trade. It was great to see traditional games, sideshows, raffles and tombolas as well as some newer clubs and groups exhibiting and introducing some new members.
A big thank you to Henfield Football Club who entertained lots of the children with fun and games, and to compere Paul Samrah for the running commentary of events.
Rob Laughton from the B-P Guild commented; “After a stormy morning the sun and smiles did come out, and we’re grateful to the clubs, groups, Football Club and Leisure Centre for all getting involved. We’re really pleased there is a small organising group working to bring the Henfield Village Fair back to Henfield Common next summer, and we are looking forward to joining in.”
Finally, a huge thank you to everyone for turning out to support the event and acknowledge the hard work of the organisers, it’s so appreciated. Here’s to 2025!

Getting involved in community climate action in your area
Thanks to the hard work of so many diligent climate action volunteers across the district there are now many community groups actively supporting Horsham District Council’s commitment to become more climate resilient and to reach our target of being a net zero district by 2050.
Across the district there is a growing network of climate action community groups offering services ranging from repair cafes, community fridges and larders, to biodiversity projects, refill stations, single use recycling points, and more!
There are many things you can do as an individual, such as reducing the amount of singleuse plastics you buy, reducing the water and energy that you use, or wildlife friendly gardening. And we can be even more effective when we work together, sharing our knowledge, skills and time, whilst enjoying a sense of community spirit and shared purpose, by supporting some of the community action groups detailed below.
Many of these groups are volunteer led, and always on the lookout for help, so do contact them if you want to get involved. If you know of others not listed below, please let us know at climatechangeaction@horsham.gov.uk

Henfield Festival of Gardens & Arts ~ Wow, what a place to live!
The organisers of the Henfield Festival of Gardens & Arts are delighted the event went so well over the weekend of 8-9th June. It’s a big ‘thank you’ from them to all the visitors from the village and beyond who enjoyed over 30 open gardens, listening to great music, and seeing the amazing art and craft from local folk. Of course, the superb
sunny weather helped make it so memorable.
The Festival again clearly demonstrated the community spirit within the village, by involving the garden openers and many of the Henfield venues; and the many local businesses who generously sponsored the ‘blue booklet’. Thanks to them all.
Not only does the festival provide enjoyment for the many hundreds, even thousands, of visitors, but is has a second purpose too - most of the villagers who open their gardens do so for charities of their choice. Last year the venues collected a total over £11,000 for good causes - local, national and internationaland this year the organisers have already beaten that figure at £13,500, and it’s still coming in!
We heard a few comments over the weekend:
“It was such a great weekend - how can I be a part of it next year?”
If you want to help or open your garden in 2025, please contact us. You’ll find it very rewarding! At present, some of the committee members are ‘stepping down’, and the organisers are already talking to some new villagers who want to get involved.
“My own garden would never pass inspection” None of the gardens are looked at before the weekend. Yes, some are magnificent, but other very simple, and some just as a garden ‘backdrop’ to artists and musicians for charity fundraising. The Festival was promoted in the National Gardens Scheme book this year, but not as NGS gardens.
“What did it all cost to put on?”
All gardens and venues were free to visitors, but many invite a donation to a charity that they were supporting. The organising group are all
volunteers, and the booklet is printed with funds kindly donated by local shops and businesses, and those selling art or crafts donate 10% to the admin costs. The detailed accounts are accessible after each festival on henfieldgardensandarts.net
Please contact us via the website henfieldgardensandarts.net or simply email our Secretary Sarah at sarahwittenhenfield@outlook.com
What
did visitors enjoy the most this June?
Actually, everything - and the sunshine! Apart from enjoying the 30 or so private gardens that included music and arts, our community venues such as St. Peter’s Church and School, the Henfield Hall, and Henfield Haven, all hosted musicians, dancers, artists and craftspeople who displayed and performed over the weekend. The Tanyard field in Cagefoot Lane was open too with a mowed trail, and the Sussex Wildlife Trust were on hand to talk to visitors and conduct short walks. To round off an amazing two days, the Festival Finale evening celebration at Red Oaks was simply amazing, with a good crowd of adults and children dancing to the Unreel Ceilidh Band.

From Secret Meetings to Modern Church: A Henfield Faith Journey
Have you ever wondered about the history hiding in plain sight? That beautiful church down the road?
Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Henfield has a story that stretches back centuries, with twists and turns that would make any history buff smile. Imagine a time, way back in the 8th century, when the first church in Henfield was built – most likely a simple wooden structure. Fast forward a few hundred years, and a grand stone church dedicated to St. Peter rose on the same spot. That church, by the way, is still standing in Church Lane today!
Life wasn’t always easy for Catholics in Henfield. There were times, during the Reformation, when practicing their faith meant going to secret Masses in West Grinstead as the newly formed Church of England became the dominant religion. Although the situation eased over the next few centuries, Catholic worshippers carried on walking to West Grinstead for Mass until the early 20th Century. In 1928 a Mass centre was established at Red Oaks, and for a while, Catholics could gather for Mass in the drawing-room there – and so the Corpus Christi parish started to evolve.
coming and going over the years. Today, Father Hugh Flower leads the parish, supported by three deacons.
By 1932, thanks to a generous local woman, Lilian Stern, Henfield finally had its own little church, a wooden building called the “Oratory”, but as the Catholic community grew, the need for a larger church became clear. Fundraising began, and after 21 years of dedicated effort, Corpus Christi Church as we know it today was opened in Tanyard in 1974 on some of the land that had belonged to Red Oaks.
Corpus Christi Church isn’t just a building; it’s a symbol. It’s a reminder of perseverance, of the importance of community, and of the enduring presence of faith. It’s a place where people have found solace, grown in their beliefs, and built a spiritual home together. Our church has seen its share of changes too, with resident priests
Churches, in general, can be like guideposts. They remind us to slow down, to reflect, and to connect with something bigger than ourselves. Whether you are a person of faith or not, our village churches are open for all, day by day, so that anyone can come and find some peace and time for prayer.
“Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Henfield has a story that stretches back centuries...”
This year Corpus Christi parish celebrated 50 years of the current building, with a joyful parish celebration of the Eucharist on June 30th and a parish brunch. We are not just looking back, though. We continue to celebrate the Mass each Sunday at 10.00 am, serving the community of Henfield and the surrounding villages, reaching out with compassion and love to all.
Suzie Newbold
Richard Bates, Henfield resident and consultant solicitor at Cognitive Law in Brighton, comments on the risks of ‘blended’ home ownership.
I often speak to clients who have decided that it would be a good idea to ‘sell up’ and move in with their children. This is usually to a larger property, perhaps with a ‘granny annexe’ or similar. The idea seems to be that the children would get access to a bigger property with less of a mortgage and, for their part, the parents will have the security of knowing that they have someone to care for them in their old age. Whilst this approach sounds idyllic, in my experience, typically things do not go as planned. Here are some things to consider:-
What are the true motivations of the parties and have you all really thought through the consequences? Will everyone get on with one another? What happens if there’s a falling out?
Will your children actually be able to care for you? Caring is an incredibly difficult job – are they experienced enough to be able to be carers? Do they have the time? How will everyone cope if your health and needs change?
If there is a mortgage on the property, will the mortgage company be happy to lend on the basis of this new arrangement? Although a parent may not be on the mortgage, they may still have a ‘beneficial interest’ in the property. One has to be completely transparent with the mortgage company, as not to be so may amount to mortgage fraud.
Are the parents planning to retain some value in the property? If it is a gift, so that the property is solely in the children’s name, the ‘7 year rule’ does not apply if you have ‘reserved a benefit’ in the gift. To avoid this tax trap, you would have to pay an open market rent to stay in the property – is this feasible/ affordable?
If you have made a gift of the property to the children, you may fall foul of the deliberate deprivation of assets rules in respect of local authority care contributions. Bear in mind that, if you had kept your property in your name, it would have likely been disregarded for care fees purposes in any event.
What happens if your children divorce, are made bankrupt or die? Will a third party suddenly have the right to the property and, in a worst case, remove you?
If you do decide this route might be for you, it is essential to get professional advice to protect your interests. You should retain some ownership in the new property, hold it as ‘tenants in common’ and have a declaration of trust to record who owns what proportion of the property, how any gain is shared and the circumstances in which a party can ‘back out’.
If you would like to discuss these themes further, please do get in touch on 01273 284012 or richard.bates@cognitivelaw.co.uk. You can find out more about me at www.cognitivelaw.co.uk.

Understanding Accounts
Your business accounts reflect the financial performance of your enterprise. They are a valuable management tool in deciding strategy and setting budgetary targets. If you are baffled by the figures and all the jargon, the following explanations may help clear the fog!
Accounting Reference Date or Balance Sheet Date - Accounts are prepared annually to a specific date called the Accounting Reference Date (ARD) or Balance Sheet Date (BSD). Businesses can choose any ARD, typically at month-end.
Accruals Basis of Accounting & Accounts
Preparation - This method records income as it is earned and expenditure as it is incurred, regardless of whether the monies have been received or paid by the ARD. Income is matched with the related expenditure, providing a fair reflection of financial performance. Accounts show monies due (debtors) and monies owing (creditors), unlike the cash basis which only records received/paid monies.
Audited Accounts - Audited accounts have undergone an independent examination of financial statements and records, culminating in an opinion on whether the accounts show a ‘true and fair view’. The auditor’s opinion is provided in an Audit Report addressed to the shareholders or partners. Most private limited companies with an annual turnover under £10.2m are exempt from an audit.
An Accountant’s Report - This report indicates that the accounts were prepared by a firm of accountants based on supplied information and explicitly states no audit was performed.
Profit & Loss Account - Also known as an Income & Expenditure Account, this document summarises all income due and expenses incurred by the business over a period (normally 12 months), resulting in a profit or loss (losses shown in brackets).
Profit - The total profit made during the accounting period, shared among partners in a partnership and set off against their drawings.
Balance Sheet - A snapshot of the business’s net worth at the BSD, comprising fixed and current assets minus liabilities.
Tangible Fixed Assets - Assets with a long life (more than one year) and relatively fixed in nature, used in business operations, such as
land, buildings, furniture, and equipment. The cost of these assets is allocated over their useful life through depreciation. Fixed assets are shown at original cost minus accumulated depreciation, equalling Net Book Value.
Current Assets - Assets that can be turned into cash or consumed soon, including stock, debtors, prepayments (e.g., insurance premiums or rentals paid in advance), and cash at bank and in hand.
Creditors: Amounts falling due within one year - Liabilities or debts to be paid within one year, such as suppliers’ bills, salaries, wages earned but not yet paid, and accruals for items yet to be invoiced (e.g., accountancy fees for the year’s financial statements).
Liquidity - Finances are ‘liquid’ when current debts can be covered by current assets. Liquidity problems arise when current debts exceed current assets, often due to poor cash flow management, unsustainable salaries/drawings, or costly fixed asset purchases.
