WELCOME

BMX New Zealand National Championships
I am delighted to welcome riders, their supporters and whānau to Rotorua for the 2021 BMX New Zealand National Championships.
In 2019, I attended the opening of our amazing new BMX facility at Te Papa o Te Kauri, right next door to our Waipa Hub. Since then it has been great to see it being used by existing riders and new club members, and now as the venue for this year’s Nationals. The track has been designed and built to meet the requirements of both challenge and elite riders and as one of only a few tracks in New Zealand of international competition standard. I know that it will thrill and challenge the very best competitors.
I would like to thank BMX New Zealand, the Central Region BMX and the Rotorua BMX Club for bringing this fantastic event to our city. Hosting an event of this status certainly supports Rotorua’s strategy to maintain its place in the world as a top mountain biking and cycling destination.
While COVID-19 has brought its challenges, Rotorua is very much open for business, and Kiwi’s are still flocking here to holiday, immerse themselves in the great outdoors and rediscover our geothermal landscape, forest trails and lakes.
We can’t wait to welcome you here, our athletes and supporters, to enjoy the unique manaakitanga, or hospitality, of our place.
I wish you all a successful weekend.
Nau mai, haere mai ki Rotorua Nāku noa, nā

Hon Steve Chadwick JP, Mayor

On behalf of the BMX New Zealand Board I would like to welcome all members of the BMX Community, both competitors and supporting families, to the 2021 BMXNZ National Championships and Championship Nationals which are being hosted by the Central Region, and held at the Rotorua BMX Club track.
This is the first Nationals on the new Rotorua track and the club are very keen to host us and show it off.
At close of entries we had 538 entries. This is down a little as expected with what happened during 2020 but as a percentage of those that qualified (620 riders) it is a pretty good number.
At this Nationals we have the Championship riders back to compete at the same event as Challenge riders and it will be great to watch them battle off the big ramp.
In preparing for these events there is much work that goes on behind the scenes (which to a lot of people goes largely unnoticed) and for this our acknowledgment and appreciation is extended to the Rotorua BMX Club and Central Region BMX.
To all the volunteers, and to those officials who are responsible for looking after the different departments, without your support these events simply wouldn’t happen so a big thank you goes out to you. Our sport should be very proud in the strength and ability of our very talented and well qualified volunteers and officials who staff these events making them run smoothly.
To all competitors, I hope that at these Nationals you achieve to your expectations, whether it is a National Title, making the podium or reaching the final, ride hard, ride fair and particularly enjoy the experience.
Also at prize giving we will be awarding the Nationals Series winners jerseys and plates so make sure you are around to congratulate these riders who worked hard last year chasing the series. The Top 3 in these classes have also earnt the right to ride with a “NS” number on their plate during the rest of the calendar year. Finally at the conclusion of these National Championships, we wish you all a safe return journey to your homes and families.
All the very best and cheers,
Warren Boggiss, Chairman

On Behalf of the Central Region we would like to welcome all our riders who have travelled from near and far to Rotorua BMX club to compete in the 2021 BMXNZ National Championship.
After a year of uncertainty it is greatly appreciated that all the riders, families and supporters have made the effort to travel from all over New Zealand to support this event. We hope that you enjoy everything on offer and have a memorable time in our region.
I would like to say a huge thank you to Aimee McGregor and her team in Rotorua for putting in many long hours for all the event organisation and track preparation that they have put in, we understand how much work goes into organising an event of this level. This is much appreciated and your hard work does not go unnoticed. Without all this effort we would not have been able to host this fabulous event.
To all our wonderful volunteers from all across New Zealand we would like to recognise and offer a massive thank you for giving up all your time over the weekend. We will be able to look back at this event and know that without all your voluntary support this would not have been the memorable weekend we intended it to be.
Finally let’s go racing, wishing all riders the best of luck and hope you all achieve your personal goals and that all you hard work and effort pays off, ride hard, ride fair and have fun.
Tanya Arnold, Regional Co-ordinator
ORIGIN OF THE NAME TE PAPA O TE KAURI
Te Papa o Te kauri is the name of the Rotorua BMX Supercross facility which was gifted to the club by local iwi.
Te Kauri was a descendant of Tamaihutoroa. She married the eldest son of Rangitihi, whose name was Rātōrua. Rātōrua was the first of the eight beating hearts of Te Arawa from whom all of Te Arawa descend.
They had a son named Whakairikawa. Whakairikawa had a son named Tūteata.
Waipā was claimed to be a boundary between Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Tūteata and the pā site was named Te Kauri after their ancestor. Te Kauri was a communal pā where the families that descended from Te Kauri resided.
It was a gathering place to grow and harvest food and for families to come together to live, play and discuss matters of the day.
Kia ora koutou
On behalf of our club committee and membership I wish you a very warm welcome to Rotorua BMX Supercross, at Te Papa o Te Kauri. We are super stoked to be hosting you all here at what we hope will be a great event for everyone. This is our first major event since our opening Central Region Champs and C1 event in December 2019.
It is an honour to have those riders back again, including our New Zealand Elite riders, and also new riders to our track. In hosting Nationals we have aimed to showcase what both BMX and Rotorua have to offer and have built in some additional fun with the Dirt Jump Jam on Saturday night and prize giving at the fabulous Te Puia on Sunday.
Thanks so much to our local Rotorua businesses, local Council and Trusts for the support to make this event happen. All of our foundation sponsors from the track build have got in behind us with support again and many more have joined us.
Far out it is a lot of work hosting Nationals. A huge thanks to our Committee and membership for being so awesome and doing your bits to deliver. A special thanks to Melanie Short, past President, key leader in delivering our track project and continued supporter and funding guru; Rupert Hastings (VP and Track Manager), Grant Butterworth (Dirt Jumps Master and Coach), Hayley Puddle (Secretary and Memberships), Chris Williams (Coach and Gate Sessions Lead), Katrina Flavell (Treasurer and Food), Bryan Newcombe (H&S, and track team), Aaron Sears (Schools and Bikes), Grant Evans (Timing), Dion Newth (Rider Rep) and our Gate Keepers Scotty, Dave and Hayden.
Any locals inspired by what you see, please get in touch and come down to a club session sometime soon. Keep an eye on our Facebook for info.

ELITE CURRENT CHAMPIONS
REBECCA PETCH

Last year’s elite BMX Champion, Rebecca Petch started BMX when she was three. Her brother had raced for two years and her parents got her a bike and it went from there.
At first she loved it because it was a family sport – that her brother and father rode. That’s what kept her in it. As Rebecca got older She learned to love it more.
Rebecca says of her passion for the sport, “I love every aspect really –definitely the speed and exhilaration. BMX provided so much opportunity to travel, meet new friends around the world. It is an individual sport so it has helped me grow perhaps more than a team sport would, although I have a good support team around me and a lot of people help me along the way There are so many aspects in BMX – technical, physical, mental, financial – there are so many things you can always work on. I definitely think the older you get, as long as the love of the sport still burns bright, then the rest should just follow. You have to work hard but enjoy what you do is so important”
When I’m not riding BMX or training I spend time with family and friends. I like going to the gym. I have a job at a coffee trailer which I enjoy and gives me a good balance.”

GUIDE TO BMX TERMS
Event/Meeting - The complete collection of races necessary to determine overall winners for every class or combined class of competition in which there are registered participants.
Gate - Electronically controlled device that our riders balance their front wheels on which controls the start of the race.
Random Gate - The accepted Standard starting procedure on electronic start gates. The random portion is between the last voice warning “watch the gate” & the start of the start sequence.
Moto - a single race from the gate to the Finish-line. These take place as initial rounds of racing for qualification to the Finals.
Deadman Final - This is a final where the result of this single race is accepted as the overall final results of the race meet & is not influenced by any other factor at the race meeting
Points Over - This is where the number of riders does not meet the minimum needed to create a deadman final. Generally this is eight or less riders, but depends on the rules of the race meeting. So the results of each moto is combined over the meeting to total, which is considered the end result.
Quarterfinal - if the number of riders allow, a Quarter-final is a race one step removed from a Semi-final & two from a Final.
Semi-final - if the number of riders allow, a Semi-final is a race one step removed from a final.
Clips/Clipless - Pedals that have built in mechanisms that lock to shoes that have cleats. These NOT permitted to be used by any riders who are aged 12 years & under in age.
Commissaire - A registered BMXNZ official that can manage a race event/ meeting.
DNF - An acronym for Did Not Finish, where a rider did not complete a race. Also where any rider who received assistance during a race from an official or medical staff, are marked as a DNF.
DNS - An acronym for Did Not Start, where a rider did not start a moto or race.
Staging - The area where riders are managed into moto groups for starting order & lead to the gate to start their moto/ race.
Transponder - An electronic sensor that is used by BMXNZ to manage race result at BMXNZ Major Meetings. Transponders identify riders & allocate their race result & track me.
Pump or Pumping - The action of pushing & pulling your bike over & through a rhythm section or a feature, to gain speed by using the transitions of the feature without pedalling. The skill of pumping is key to BMX racing & something that must be learnt as soon as possible on starting BMX racing.
Manual - The action of riding on the back wheel of a bike & moving forward without pedalling. Generally used to navigate through or create speed in a rhythm section of the track.
High Low - The manoeuvre taken in a corner to outwit another racer. It is the process of entering the corner in a high/ outside position & diving low under the rider in front to gain a position or higher exit speed. This can be reversed as a Low-High manoeuvre entering a corner low & fast, pushing up to exit high, with the same aim of getting in front of a competing rider.
HOW TO GET STARTED
FOLLOW THESE STEPS
* Contact a club close to you and find out when their club training and races are held and how best to join in.
* Go to your nearest track and watch a club race meeting. Being at a club race meeting will give you an idea of whether or not you think BMX is for you. Ask questions while you’re there, BMX people are helpful. If you’re checking this all out for your son or daughter, it’s worth noting that many kids really like riding the tracks, but the competitive nature of the racing is not necessarily for them. Take your son or daughter with you to see if they like the look of the racing itself.
* If you’ve got a BMX bike, get to the track and ride around slowly. Wear your safety gear. Most of the tracks in New Zealand are open to the public at any time that they are not being used by the clubs. PLEASE wear a helmet, gloves and cover your skin with a long sleeved top and long pants. If you have elbow and knee or shin pads, wear them. Covered foot wear is also a great idea.
* If you don’t have a BMX bike, speak to your local club many have loan bikes to trial for size etc, we strongly recommend against rushing out and buying one without trying a BMX race bike first.
* If you’re hooked and you want to get into it - don’t buy a brand new bike to start with. Bikes can be very expensive brand new. You want to know your child is definitely keen before spending a fortune.
