9th October 2023

On behalf of the BMX New Zealand Board I would like to welcome all members of the BMX Community, both competitors and supporting families, to the 2023 BMX New Zealand North Island Titles which are being hosted by the Northern Region, and held at the Waitākere BMX Club track.

This event is the first major meeting to be hosted by the Waitākere club for over 20yrs so it is great to be able to return and enjoy some of the Westie hospitality. At close of entries we had 550 entries which is slightly up on last year’s event.

Welcome to the Australian Mighty 11 Teams and families that have made the trip over to battle with the NZ teams. I hope you enjoy your time in New Zealand.

In preparing for these events there is much work that goes on behind the scenes (which to a lot of people goes largely unnoticed) and for this our acknowledgment and appreciation is extended to the Waitākere BMX Club and Northern Region.

To all the volunteers, and to those officials who are responsible for looking after the different departments, without your support these events simply wouldn’t happen so a big thank you goes out to you. Our sport should be very proud in the strength and ability of our very talented and well qualified volunteers and officials who staff these events making them run smoothly.

To all competitors, I hope that at these Island Titles you achieve to your expectations, whether it is a North Island Title, making the podium or reaching the final, ride hard, ride fair and particularly enjoy the experience.

Finally at the conclusion of these North Island Titles, we wish you all a safe return journey to your homes and families.

All the very best and cheers,

On behalf of the Northern Region Bmx Clubs I would like to welcome you all to Waitākere BMX Club for the 2023 BMXNZ North Island Titles.

A very special welcome to the Mighty 11 test team & their support crew from Australia. The racing between the two country’s is always a highlight of the weekend & we wish both Teams the very best of luck.

I would like to congratulate Gareth & his Waitākere crew for all their hard work getting the track & surroundings ready to host this event. A lot of hard work goes into hosting these major meets over a year or two prior & all voluntary so congratulations to you all the track looks mint.

To all the volunteers & BMXNZ officials, thank you for running these events. Without you guys events like this would not happen. A huge Thank you to the Grant funders & Sponsors without you this would not be possible.

To all the riders we hope you enjoy your Norths experience here at Waitākere & reach your goals you may have set yourself.

Ride Hard, Ride Fast, Ride Fair.

Good luck to you all.

I am delighted to extend my warmest welcome to all of you attending the 2023 BMXNZ North Island Titles hosted by the Waitākere BMX Club and the Northern Region.

This event would not have been possible without the incredible dedication and tireless efforts of our organising committee and volunteers. To everyone that has helped, thank you for your unwavering commitment to making this event a success. Your hard work, countless hours of planning, and attention to detail have been truly remarkable. It is your passion for BMX that has driven us to this moment, and we are immensely grateful for your contributions.

I would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors and funding partners who have generously supported us in bringing this event to life. Your belief in our club’s vision and your financial assistance have made a significant difference, allowing us to provide a fantastic venue and competitive experience for all participants.

As we wait in anticipation for the first gate drop of this fantastic event, I encourage you to embrace the spirit of competition, and sportsmanship that define the BMX community. Together, we celebrate not only the thrill of racing but also the bonds we create and the memories we cherish.

Once again, I extend my warmest welcome and heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you. May the 2023 BMXNZ North Island Titles be a resounding success, filled with unforgettable moments and achievements.

MIGHTY 11’S A BRIEF HISTORY

MIGHTY 11’S

THE MIGHTY 11’S IS A HIGHLY REVERED TRANS-TASMAN BMX COMPETITION BETWEEN AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND.

It all started at the Ipswich BMX club in Brisbane, Australia.

Some 35 years ago, a rider from the Ipswich club was tragically killed in a car accident. His mother gave the club a trophy to be used in his memory, so the club at the time discussed & decided to hold a “invitation” meeting for a junior class, as the rider that the trophy honoured was eleven at the time of the accident.

A little later on, out of a close friendship between New Zealand’s Errol Nelson & Neville Gray, the president of the Ipswich BMX Club, a vision was built out of their love of BMX for a Trans-Tasman BMX exchange. Their vision was of a cultural exchange trip along with BMX racing, which they were truly passionate about. The exchange was timed to happen with the Mighty Eleven meeting, which then combined to be the Mighty Elevens Title.

The cultural exchange was to give kids a look into differing cultures & environments to learn & grow their outlooks of the world. The visiting teams are billeted with local families too, another part of growing up & experiencing different things.

So every June Queens Birthday weekend & October Labour Day weekend, riders who are eleven on the first day of June or the 20th of October respectively, from all over Australia & New Zealand are invited to compete against each other to establish the “Mighty Eleven” for that year.

So there are two parts of the “Mighty Eleven” experience. Firstly is to trial for the Mighty Elevens Test Team & if successful race against the Australians for the “Mighty Eleven Trans-Tasman Trophy”. Secondly is for all eleven year old boys & girls to race together in the “ Mighty Elevens Special Class ” to establish the overall “Might Eleven” rider.

The following pages present your October 2023 Trans-Tasman Test Teams.
